indy Sauer has been a home baker for many years and last year she bought Little Bliss Cakery which has been open since 2011. Nestled in the Granite Bay Town Center, this charming gourmet dessert shop specializes in a variety of cupcakes, custom-order, full-size cakes, ice cream, fresh brewed coffee and other exclusive creations. “We built a wedding tasting room that caters to wedding parties,” Sauer said. “Wedding couples love it and it is a special time for them to taste their possibilities.” The tastings for wedding cakes are free of charge and any flavor they have can be made into a wedding cake. Whether you would prefer cupcakes, three-tiered cakes or any other type of wedding cakes, they can do it. All couples need is a little or a lot of imagination to have Little Bliss Cakery create dessert for their special day.

Yvonne Alicea offers tips and advice for those who are preparing for their wedding day and night. “Girls spend a lot of time for everything else whether it is the chicken or fish, flower types and other items, but the first night needs to be special,” Alicea explained. “The first night is your first night as his wife and the scents, the music, the flowers, the things that meant something that got you both where you are.” The store offers a fittings for wedding night lingerie, honeymoon lingerie and for wedding day lingerie. When it comes to the wedding dress, her one major

piece of advice is to not get dress alternations without getting the right undergarments first. Alicea has had women come in and pick out multiple items not only for their wedding night but for their honeymoon and afterward. “I had one bride come into my store when I first opened, every two weeks she would come in and pick out a scent and put it away for her wedding,” Alicea said. “Take the time to pick something as unique as your relationship.”

Jackie Willard puts couples minds at ease

ixteen years ago, when she went away to college, Jackie Willard assisted different wedding photographers and 11 years ago took the plunge and started her own business. She caters to weddings, baby portraits, family portraits, maternity and newborns and more. “I start at $3,000. I always include an album in each package, because that is what I want each couple to take away from the wedding,” Willard said. “My average wedding session is about seven to eight hours.”
She likes to do engagement sessions when possible, so she can get to know the couple and they can get comfortable in front of the camera and know her shooting style. Nervous or tense in front of a camera? Willard is here to help. She said she is more of a candid photographer and likes to put couples into poses but has them interact with each other. “Just having them be silly, funny or playful, whatever they like to do togeth-

Engagement sessions are addon sessions but help build the relationship and comfort between the photographer, couple and camera. Willard serves the Sacramento area and is available for travel.

For the uncertain couple, there is a large library of photos and examples to thumb through to spur likes and dislikes. Till said that this season she is seeing a lot of all-green palettes with foliage centerpieces and lots of garlands. Classic color palettes, like all white and blush, or burgundy red, are always on trend. “We make it easy, so our brides have one thing less to worry about,” Till said. Samantha Webb reflects on her time as Miss Placer County
B
ackstage at the Miss Placer County may seem competitive but is also about working together with others and becoming one big happy family during the process. Samantha Webb, 2017’s Miss Placer County gave us the backstage background and what being the queen the past year has been for her. Kennedy Pageant Productions helps participants throughout the entire process during the eight weeks before and then during the pageant. During the eight weeks prior, at the rehearsals, participants learn the stage walks, an opening number, do mock interviews and get to know all the other girls. “You don’t have to know a single thing about pageantry to compete,” Webb said. “If one of our girls needs help with something like an outfit for interviews or they need to find a place for a gown, we all come together; truth be told, I borrowed the evening gown from another girl that I won in.”

After Webb was announced the winner, she wanted to be able to go to as many events as possible. However, it was challenging at times since she was a fulltime student and working. She wanted to be able to commit to hosting a drive and supporting other queens with their platforms as well. Webb said that being a titleholder comes with a lot of responsibility and there are many opportunities that come with the crown and sash. Titleholders must be able to connect with the community, be a role model to girls within the court and those throughout the community. “You are expected to go to 12 events during your year (one a month) and host or help a local nonprofit,” Webb said. “I believe I’m on event 38 or so and we still have so many more coming up for the end of my reign.” Webb said she loved being able to help different nonprofits this year. She has been able to host drives for the Ticket
to Dream Foundation for the past three years, was able to raise funds and collect toys for their Christmas drive, she worked different events like helping at local elementary schools and volunteering to work at different conventions within the Sacramento area. “I have been exposed to so many different ways. We can help build up communities with my reign this year, so that has to be my favorite part of this title,” Webb said. While Webb feels she has fulfilled her duties as queen, she wants to continue to do more. Since someone else will soon step up for the next crown and many other young women will come after her, Webb said that’s the best part of being including in a legacy. “I just have to thank the community members who have welcomed me to different events,” she said. “I could not have had such an exciting and rewarding year without all of the people who have helped me.”

The annual Pancake Breakfast is served from 7 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 4 in the Bootlegger’s parking lot, 210 Washington St. in old town Auburn. Cost is $7 for pancakes, bacon and eggs and juice. Then get the kids ready to burn off some of those carbs with traditional, old-fashioned kids’ games from 9 a.m. to noon. ant to shape up for summer? Eat at home. In today’s fast-paced world, we consume over 30 percent of our daily calories away from home. These lessthan-wholesome calories are accumulating around our waists and draining our bank accounts. So why do we eat out and shun the kitchen? Simple: convenience. We don’t have the time to toil away over a hot stove. However, evidence is mounting that we are paying big for the so-called convenience of outside food. Obesity-related diseases are on the rise, as are the number of folks who are just plain unhappy with how their bodies look and feel. Cooking at home seems to be the first step in our road to healthier bodies. Here are the top five reasons that you should start cooking and eating at home …
REASON 1: IT’S GOOD FOR YOU Hyper-processed foods are harmful to our health, and that’s exactly where you’ve been getting the bulk of your calories. Even restaurant food that contains fresh produce, chances are high that the produce is not organic, or local or nonGMO. Most of us are eating less than half of the recommended amount of fiber, fruit and vegetables, which eating at home could quickly change. Simple meals made at home with fresh produce and organic meats or eggs are nutritionally superior to over-flavored, over-processed restaurant food. Not to mention the high-calorie beverages and starters that so often accompany a restaurant meal. When you eat at home you take in more nutrient-dense calories that are higher in fiber.
misconception has made us fear the kitchen. But I urge you to reconsider. Meals made at home need not mirror those ordered in restaurants. On the contrary, simple is better when it comes to home cooking. Plan your entire meal around a couple of pieces of fresh produce and a wholesome, lean protein. No need for complicated sauces or sides — these are where the harmful calories hide anyway.
REASON 3: IT COSTS LESS Fresh, simple ingredients do not cost much. Especially when compared to the cost of prepared meals. Shopping the perimeter of the store is always a good plan. Here you’ll find the fresh produce, meats, dairy and seafood. Venture into the aisles for oils and spices to compliment the fresh ingredients.
REASON 4: IT IS PREVENTATIVE MEDICINE In the U.S., the annual health care expenses related to obesity are $150 billion, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Worldwide this number is over $1 trillion annually. These numbers are staggering, and sobering when you think of all the individual lives that are being negatively impacted by obesity. Rather than waiting for you and your family members to experience the health risks related to obesity, start your own mission to cook simple meals at home and redirect your future. Remember the words of Benjamin Franklin, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”
REASON 5: IT REDUCES BODY FAT Eating at home is also one of the best ways to reduce your body fat. Meals eaten at home contain an average of 200 calories less than meals eaten out. A reduction in 200-plus calories per meal will quickly translate to pounds lost! Start today, and don’t be afraid to start small. Pick one meal that you’ll make at home either today or tomorrow, and write down your simple menu and grocery list. And let’s not forget the place that a challenging, consistent exercise program has in your quest for good health and a fit physique.
REASON 2: IT’S FAR EASIER THAN YOU THINK Eating out so often has conditioned our concept of a meal to be one with complicated flavors and accompaniments. This

s we move into the warmer months of spring and summer our tendency is to shift our wine drinking habits from the heavy reds of winter to more refreshing chilled white wines. But there are other options then your favorite chardonnay or sauvignon blanc, there is rosé. Slowly people’s perception of rosé is changing, it might look pink but it is not your grandmother’s white zinfandel. Made from red grapes, but left only for a limited time with the color-giving grape skins, rosé can vary from the palest powder-puff pink to deep opaque red depending on how long the grapes macerate.
French rosés tend to be made of blends of various varietals: grenache, syrah, cinsault, mourvedre, tibouren, carignan and cabernet sauvignon and the constitution of these blends vary depending on the region. Whereas here in the California, rosés are predominately made from single varietals, anything from Pinot Noir to Cabernet Sauvignon and everything in between. Lighter drier rosés made from pinot noir, pair well with light salads, light pasta and rice dishes, especially with seafood, raw and lightly cooked shellfish and grilled fish and goats cheeses. Whereas heavier drier rosés made from syrah or cabernet sauvignon makes them ideal for a barbecue and for drinking with spicy food such as curries. Rosés are usually a bargain, especially compared with red wines. These wines are young and relatively cheap to make. There are plenty of good options in the $10–$15 range. It’s the perfect barbecue wine, the perfect beach wine, and the perfect picnic wine, but it’s also the perfect wine sitting around and relaxing.

ne of my favorites things to do as a little girl was get out my plastic tea set, arrange it on the floor of my bedroom and invite a select few of my very favorite stuffed animals to attend the party. The spread was simple: Apple juice for the “tea,” whatever type of cookies Mom had in the snack drawer and all the berries I could find in the refrigerator or blackberry bushes outside. To my young and imaginative mind, berries of all kinds were a crucial ingredient to make a proper tea party. I still think berries are a lovely addition to a tea party. Their vibrant hues add splashes of deep purples and bright reds to the setting. But instead of just dropping them into a dish on the table to be plucked out – as I did when I was a child – I now find it more exciting to incorporate berries into scones, cakes and tea cookies. I have a delightful recipe for blueberry scones, and who doesn’t love a decadent cake piled with whipped cream and raspberries? But I decided this time to experiment with a type of tea cookie with the added challenge of making it vegan. I am not a vegan, but I have several friends who do adhere to a vegan, dairy-free or gluten-free diet I know they appreciate when others make the extra effort to provide special treats for them. This recipe for vegan berry tea cookies is free from all milk and animal products. It does contain gluten since I just used bleached, all-purpose flour, but it could easily be a gluten-free snack by

substituting the flour in the cookie with almond or coconut flour. It’s fun to find new ways to make familiar recipes, regardless of whether you can’t or don’t want to put certain ingredients in your body. I was intrigued by the idea of making a dairy-free frosting and loved how the cashew frosting turned out. I let my frosting remain nutty simply by shortening the mixing time. In my opinion, it added a nice texture beneath the soft and sweet berries. For those who prefer frosting to be more or less sweet, this can be accomplished by adding more or less sugar. Another alternative for a low-sugar frosting would be maple syrup in the place of sugar. In fact, even if no sweetener was added at all, the sweetness from the berries and cookie would probably balance out quite nicely. Any extra nutty frosting can be used on toast or as a fruit dip. Be sure to bake the cookies until they are golden-brown so that when they cool the crunch is there. These are not meant to be soft and fluffy, but rather a firm base for the nutty frosting and berries. They are delicious without the toppings, and can be served plain if you desire. For the berries to top this batch of tea cookies, I used blackberries, raspberries and strawberries. The local roadside strawberries stands are mostly all open now, and it seems to me that they are particularly sweet and delicious this year. While some strawberry stands also sell other berries, the farmers’ markets around Placer County will surely have a vibrant collection. Buying fruits and vegetables from local sellers makes it much more likely that the food was picked or harvested at the peak of its growth. It makes a difference to the farmer, too. I invite you to try out these sweet treats, perhaps accompanied by a cup of tea, and enjoy a simply delicious afternoon snack. Maybe you’ll even be inspired to invite a few friends to a “berry” sweet tea party.

Vegan berry tea cookies INGREDIENTS
Cookie: ½ cup coconut oil or dairy-free butter ¾ cup white sugar 1 tablespoon ground flaxseed mixed with 2 tablespoons water 1 ¼ white or wheat flour 1 teaspoon cream of tartar ½ teaspoon baking soda Nutty frosting: 2 cups soaked cashews (soak full 24 hours) 1/3 cup sugar 2 tablespoon lemon juice 2 tablespoon water 3 tablespoon coconut cream 2 teaspoon vanilla extract Toppings: Sliced strawberries Raspberries Blackberries Any other fruit or berry DIRECTIONS
1. For the cookie, begin by preheating the oven to 350 degrees F. In a large bowl, cream together the coconut oil or butter and sugar until smooth. Mix in flaxseed and water. Combine the flour, cream of tartar and baking soda; stir into the creamed mixture until just blended. Roll dough on parchment paper and cut into circles with cookie cutter or mouth of a pint glass. Lay on parchment paper cookie sheet 2 inches apart. Bake for 9 to 13 minutes, or until lightly browned. Let cool. Makes about 14 tarts. 2. For the frosting, blend the soaked (and drained) cashews in a high-power blender or food processor until it turns into a coarse texture. Add the remaining ingredients and blend until completely smooth, or until desired nuttiness, about 4 to 5 minutes. 3. Spread the nutty frosting on the cookie. Top with berries. Enjoy!

The Heritage Trail is a summer-long road trip through history where 22 museums throughout Placer County open their doors admission free JUNE SEPTEMBER for one special day. To make it easier to see all the history our county has to offer, only small geographic clusters of museums will have their “Heritage Trail Day” on a given Saturday throughout the summer.
