JORDAN BROWN CLOSES IN ON DECISION

T

hroughout his life, Jordan Brown has stood out. Whether it be at school, around town or being the last ESPN Top 100 recruit to commit in the Class of 2018, everyone has had a close eye on Brown. Standing at 6 foot, 11 inches, Brown is extremely noticeable, with that comes a chip on his shoulders that over the years Brown has embraced.

“It is just different,” Senior Jordan Brown said on his height. “Not everyone my whole life was as tall as me, and the most important part for me was just accepting I was different at a young age.”

At the age of 18, Brown has already had a very accomplished career. Most notable is when he won two gold medals with the junior Olympic team, he was named a McDonald’s All-American last month and led Woodcreek to the state championship appearance last spring.

“There is a bunch,” Brown said on the accolades he has received. “I led my team to a state title game my junior year, I was selected as a McDonald’s All-American and also competed in a bunch of tournaments for The Path and Team USA.” After completing his junior year at Woodcreek, Brown made the switch

and transferred to Prolific Prep in Napa to further his education and be in a more competitive environment playing across the country night in and night out. However, his senior year did not go exactly as planned.

Brown nursed a hand sprain that kept him out for a big chunk of his senior season. Despite this, Brown still managed to average 21.5 points and grab 11.7 rebounds a game in his senior year.

Brown, after the prep season went on to be named 1 of 24 McDonald’s All-Americans which honors the top high school players in the country. In the game, Brown went on to have 26 points, while grabbing 8 rebounds while playing crucial minutes down the stretch in the West’s 131-128 victory over the East squad. Prior to competing in the McDonald’s game; Brown was invited to the Nike Hoop Summit where he played against the best players from World; led

With high school coming to a close soon for Brown, he has still yet to make a decision where to take his talents to and continue his academic career next fall. The top three schools battling

for Brown’s services are University of Nevada, University of California, Berkeley, and University of Arizona.

Although Brown has only taken a official to Berkeley out of that list, he still has one more left that if needed he could use to help make his college choice.

“All three of my final schools have been around for a long time,” Brown admitted. “Nevada and Cal were the first schools to offer me and Arizona has a good program, any of those schools should have a good roster next year.”

Wherever Brown lands, he will look to make an impact right away in hopes of making the NBA in a few short years. “(The NBA) has been a dream of mine my whole life,” Brown admitted. “Having that chance to play where so many people I have looked up to has played would be a dream come true.”

Despite the fame, Brown has remained humble in honoring his Roseville roots.

“The city of Roseville will always mean a lot to me,” Brown explained. “Being able to see all the support throughout the community and how it has grown over the years means everything to me because this is my hometown.”

Black top comedy brings live comedy and education.

f laughter is the best medicine, get ready for a healthy dose of giggles, friendship and community at Rocklin’s comedy club: Blacktop Comedy. Located off Sunset Boulevard this comedy venue offers the community live standup, improv, and sketch comedy shows and classes.

Blacktop Comedy began in 2011 with the mission to bring Rocklin, Roseville and the region live comedy and education. Over the years, Blacktop has created and performed hundreds of shows, bringing thousands in the local community a case of the chuckles.

Paul Burke, owner of Blacktop Comedy, loves teaching and offers classes weekly for people of all ages and experience levels. Burke saw the need for more nightlife in the area and one day he decided to make that happen and opened Blacktop Comedy.

Those new to standup, Burke suggests that a Thursday night class is the best place to begin.

“We call our 7 p.m. drop-in Improv for Everyone because we know everyone can improvise,” Burke said. “I’ve been doing this for 12 years, and so far, everyone can.”

The Thursday class drop-in is for ages 16 and up. Burke expects newcomers to be nervous or feel worried about being judged and looking bad, but he has important information to share for those who may be hesitant.

“Improv is about making your partner look good, treating their ideas as amazing, and saying ‘yes, and,’” Burke explained.

“When you do that, everyone wants to play with you and work with you, and you’ll become a great improviser.”

Burke adds that hesitant newcomers are welcome to watch the improv classes.

On average, 20 to 25 people come out on Thursday nights. Kid’s classes are offered for up and coming little comedians who would like to learn more.

You don’t have to be a performer to enjoy Blacktop Comedy. There are hundreds who come by on Friday and Saturday night just to watch live comedy.

“We love comedy in all shapes, sizes, and formats,” Burke said. “At Blacktop, you will discover the best improv, sketch, and stand-up comedy.”

Blacktops’ goal is to make audiences and participants laugh. If you’re looking for a unique night out with friends or significant other, Blacktop Comedy may fit that bill.

his past Hairwars Fundraiser on Friday April 27 was a huge success.

Attendance was at 350.

Jenna Rae from radio station KNCI performed the duties of emcee and one of the featured judges was the producer and director of Sac Fashion Week, Duane Ram. There were five teams that competed, Sheer Attitude and Color Envy took first place this year. Emancipated from pretentious coffee

When Abraham Lincoln gave his Gettysburg Address in 1863, his entreaty for justice, liberty and equality were made undeniably clear.

Fast-forward 155 years to one un-

assuming coffee shop in Historic Roseville which is articulating the same message — with subtle notes of cocoa and aromatic sensation. “We want to emancipate people from pretentious coffee culture,” said Luke Noland, co-owner of Fourscore Coffee House.

Unlike many coffee-providers on the rise, owners Noland and Jesse Mariut have succeeded in creating an environment where guests feel welcomed and respected, rather than intimidated.

Fourscore’s official opening in 2017 came after months of preparation and construction. With the help of JNT Building and Remodeling and several members of the community, the 60-square-foot area was transformed to a 1,200-square-foot space with a large table made from reclaimed wood of the original building, and brick walls and pillars from the old K Street building in Sacramento. “We wanted to sort of capture the old-town feel,” said Noland.

and their mission to fight for justice against human trafficking and slavery.

With President Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address in mind, they decided on Fourscore Coffee.

Mariut, a Roseville native, owns two other businesses, but says this coffee shop is just different. “It’s unlike any other business I have,” he said. “People are loyal to our product.”

One aspect of Fourscore that is remarkably distinctive from other coffee shops is that, in the words of the owners, the coffee is secondary. This doesn’t mean that it is of lesser quality or lacking in any way, but rather the coffee is secondary because the people drinking it come first. During the years that Noland spent working at local and worldwide coffee shops around Sacramento and Placer County, he learned about more than just coffee. Noland said when he started working at Starbucks it was simply because he needed a job. But after many occasions of customers sharing their stories and struggles with him, the job became about more about the people.

Noland said he can recall many times when someone would break down crying and share their life stories with him while he was making their coffee. He came to the conclusion that even in the simple act of making a cup of coffee, he could be making someone’s day, too.

THE COFFEE

In thinking of a name for their coffee shop, the owners wanted something that would capture the local feel of the business, but also nationally recognizable.

“We thought it sounded really strong and captured our mission and heart and vision,” Noland said. As Noland, Mariut and two other collaborators were brainstorming they considered the street that the building was on, Lincoln Street,

Fourscore gets its coffee beans from a local roaster out of Loomis called Valiant Coffee. “We’re keeping it local,” said Austin Fruci, a barista at Fourscore for almost one year. A variety of options await to quench the thirst of each customer including drip coffee, pour overs, traditional espresso drinks, seasonal drinks like spiced lattes, a selection of hot or iced teas and refreshing lemonade in the summer months. “Every one of our baristas wants to make sure your time here is the best experience it can be and not just a good cup of coffee,” Fruci said.

THE ARTISTS

The friendly atmosphere is especially welcoming to local musicians and artists. “We really like to invest in the

community of Roseville,” Fruci said.

“So we give local musicians a chance to express their art and talent here.” This small but spacious platform is ideal for music of all genres. Several of the acts Fourscore has hosted include Brolly, an indie singer/songwriter, The Co, which has a more pop sound, and J.D. Avila, an acoustic singer/songwriter.

The coffee shop has even hosted the aptly named Barista Nightmare, who plays a variety of satirical covers with humorous additions.

THE INJUSTICE

Fourscore partners with Agape International Missions (AIM) missions which is an organization based out of Cambodia that rescues young women out of sex trafficking. AIM then offers the girls support while recovering followed by an offer of lawful employment and education in useful life skills. One of the ways Fourscore supports the nonprofit is by selling handmade, cloth coffee sleeves.

Each reusable sleeve comes with a note that includes the name of the girl who made it and a bit about her life story. A portion of each sleeve purchased goes back to AIM to support the organization and help the girls.

One of Fourscore’s core values is to authentically serve everyone and love everyone through coffee. Whenever someone walks though the door, it is the staff’s goal to provide more than just a good dark roast. Patrons of Fourscore should feel that their time is valued, their concerns cared for and leave contentedly with a smile on their face.

“We want to be about pursuing human hearts,” Noland said, “and we do that through coffee.”

B

ackstage at the Miss Placer County may seem competitive but is also about working together with others and becoming one big happy family during the process. Samantha Webb, 2017’s Miss Placer County gave us the backstage background and what being the queen the past year has been for her.

Kennedy Pageant Productions helps participants throughout the entire process during the eight weeks before and then during the pageant. During the eight weeks prior, at the rehearsals, participants learn the stage walks, an opening number, do mock interviews and get to know all the other girls.

“You don’t have to know a single thing about pageantry to compete,” Webb said. “If one of our girls needs help with something like an outfit for interviews or they need to find a place for a gown, we all come together; truth be told, I borrowed the evening gown from another girl that I won in.”

After Webb was announced the winner, she wanted to be able to go to as many events as possible. However, it was challenging at times since she was a fulltime student and working. She wanted to be able to commit to hosting a drive and supporting other queens with their platforms as well.

Webb said that being a titleholder comes with a lot of responsibility and there are many opportunities that come with the crown and sash. Titleholders must be able to connect with the community, be a role model to girls within the court and those throughout the community.

“You are expected to go to 12 events during your year (one a month) and host or help a local nonprofit,” Webb said. “I believe I’m on event 38 or so and we still have so many more coming up for the end of my reign.”

Webb said she loved being able to help different nonprofits this year. She has been able to host drives for the Ticket

to Dream Foundation for the past three years, was able to raise funds and collect toys for their Christmas drive, she worked different events like helping at local elementary schools and volunteering to work at different conventions within the Sacramento area.

“I have been exposed to so many different ways. We can help build up communities with my reign this year, so that has to be my favorite part of this title,” Webb said.

While Webb feels she has fulfilled her duties as queen, she wants to continue to do more. Since someone else will soon step up for the next crown and many other young women will come after her, Webb said that’s the best part of being including in a legacy.

“I just have to thank the community members who have welcomed me to different events,” she said. “I could not have had such an exciting and rewarding year without all of the people who have helped me.”

Where to celebrate Independence Day AUBURN

Start off by chowing down pancakes lovingly prepared by the Auburn Fire Department. The annual Pancake Breakfast is served from 7 to 11 a.m.

y son developed migraine headaches when he was in elementary school. As painful as they were for him, it also was painful for me to watch him suffer. One moment, he would be bouncing around and the next, he would be curled up on the sofa.

His migraines would develop after some changes in his vision. Then, as the headache started, he experienced sensitivity to light and sound, nausea and vomiting. Ibuprofen would help, but only if taken immediately. The massive headaches would only resolve with sleep, only to be followed by a day or two of fatigue.

The initial diagnosis of a migraine should be made by a physician, as there are many different types of headaches. About 10 to 12 percent of the population suffers from migraines. There’s no cure for these often-debilitating headaches that can last anywhere from four hours to a few days. Fortunately, in my son’s case, the migraines became less frequent as an adult.

Although there is no cure, migraines can be managed. As a physician, I try to help my patients understand what migraines are and to look for patterns about why and how they develop.

There are several types of migraines, but two are more prevalent: Migraine without aura, which is known as a common migraine; and migraine with aura, known as a classic migraine.

People with common migraines often experience nausea and vomiting, and may feel worse around light and sound.

People with classic migraines (like the ones my son experienced) may see wavy lines, flashing lights, or

objects that look distorted – up to 30 minutes before the onset of the migraine. Sometimes tingling or “pins-and-needles” feelings may also accompany a classic migraine. Symptoms can build gradually and the migraine itself can last up to an hour.

We don’t know exactly what causes migraines, but genetics and environmental factors appear to play a role.

What we do know is that certain factors can trigger migraines, and it’s important to try to identify what those are. In my son’s case, his migraines were triggered by a lack of sleep and an association with orange juice.

If you experience migraines, consider keeping a diary to track what you were doing, or what you were eating before each headache began. It’s also a good idea to track how long the migraine lasted and what the pain felt like. Try to be specific about whether it was a throbbing, aching, stabbing or dull pain. If you see flashing lights or dark spots, or if you are sensitive to noises, jot that down, too. If your doctor has prescribed medicine for migraine pain, take it as directed.

Migraines often occur during stressful times, so try relaxation techniques to avoid those triggers.

Make sure to get plenty of sleep, exercise and eat healthy. Some food and drinks can be triggers, such as chocolate, alcohol, aspartame, MSG and some additives; avoid those if you experience headaches.

Also, limit caffeine and don’t smoke.

If your migraines persist, talk with your physician about what you think may be triggering them. Your physician may prescribe medication or therapy to ease the pain or prevent the headaches altogether.

ne of my favorites things to do as a little girl was get out my plastic tea set, arrange it on the floor of my bedroom and invite a select few of my very favorite stuffed animals to attend the party. The spread was simple: Apple juice for the “tea,” whatever type of cookies Mom had in the snack drawer and all the berries I could find in the refrigerator or blackberry bushes outside. To my young and imaginative mind, berries of all kinds were a crucial ingredient to make a proper tea party.

I still think berries are a lovely addition to a tea party. Their vibrant hues add splashes of deep purples and bright reds to the setting. But instead of just dropping them into a dish on the table to be plucked out — as I did when I was a child — I now find it more exciting to incorporate berries into scones, cakes and tea cookies.

I have a delightful recipe for blueberry scones, and who doesn’t love a decadent cake piled with whipped cream and raspberries? But I decided this time to experiment with a type of tea cookie with the added challenge of making it vegan.

I am not a vegan, but I have several friends who do adhere to a vegan, dairy-free or gluten-free diet.

I know they appreciate when others make the extra effort to provide special treats for them. This recipe for vegan berry tea cookies is free from all milk and animal products. It does contain gluten since I just used bleached, all-purpose flour, but it could easily be a gluten-free snack by substituting the flour in the cookie with almond or coconut flour.

It’s fun to find new ways to make familiar recipes, regardless of whether you can’t or don’t want to put certain ingredients in your body. I was intrigued by the idea of making a dairy-free frosting and loved how the cashew frosting turned out.

I let my frosting remain nutty simply by shortening the mixing time. In my opinion, it added a nice texture beneath the soft and sweet berries. For those who prefer frosting to be more or less sweet, this can be accomplished by adding more or less sugar.

Another alternative for a low-sugar frosting would be maple syrup in the place of sugar. In fact, even if no sweetener was added at all, the sweetness from the

DIRECTIONS 1. For the cookie, begin by preheating the oven to 350 degrees F. 2. In a large bowl, cream together the coconut oil or butter and sugar until smooth.

3. Mix in flaxseed and water.

4. Combine the flour, cream of tartar and baking soda; stir into the creamed mixture until just blended.

5. Roll dough on parchment paper and cut into circles with cookie cutter or mouth of a pint glass.

Lay on parchment paper cookie sheet 2 inches apart.

6. Bake for 9 to 13 minutes, or until lightly browned. Let cool. Makes about 14 tarts.

7. For the frosting, blend the soaked (and drained) cashews in a high-power blender or food processor until it turns into a coarse texture.

8. Add the remaining ingredients and blend until completely smooth, or until desired nuttiness, about 4 to 5 minutes.

berries and cookie would probably balance out quite nicely. Any extra nutty frosting can be used on toast or as a fruit dip.

Be sure to bake the cookies until they are golden-brown so that when they cool the crunch is there. These are not meant to be soft and fluffy, but rather a firm base for the nutty frosting and berries.

They are delicious without the toppings, and can be served plain if you desire.

For the berries to top this batch of tea cookies, I used blackberries, raspberries and strawberries. The local roadside strawberries stands are mostly all open now, and it seems to me that they are

particularly sweet and delicious this year. While some strawberry stands also sell other berries, the farmers’ markets around Placer County will surely have a vibrant collection. Buying fruits and vegetables from local sellers makes it much more likely that the food was picked or harvested at the peak of its growth. It makes a difference to the farmer, too.

I invite you to try out these sweet treats, perhaps accompanied by a cup of tea, and enjoy a simply delicious afternoon snack. Maybe you’ll even be inspired to invite a few friends to a “berry” sweet tea party.

nyone who has lost a pet knows that feeling of immense appreciation toward the kind stranger who found it and brought it home.

In Roseville, and surrounding areas, the dogs, cats and other furbabies of residents are being found sooner and more often with the help of a Facebook group called Roseville Lost & Found Pets. Kimberly Hall is one of the main administrators of this group and of Rocklin Lost & Found Pets. Hall is retired and has three furry friends of her own: a yellow lab, a 14-year-old chow chow and a husky-bulldog mix — two of which were rescue dogs. She also works for a pet caretaker site, Rover.com, and donates to local dog and cat rescues.

“The purpose of the group is to spread the word through social media and reunite owners with lost pets, or post them as found,” Hall said. The online

group has more than a thousand members and works closely with local animal shelters, Placer SPCA and Animal Control Services. When needed, a small group of volunteers go on “rescue missions” to find lost pets in the community. “We’re not picky about how people find their pets,” Hall said. “We just want to reunite them — and not have loose dogs running around.”

The volunteers who go out into the community to find lost pets first contact the owner to be certain that they want help finding their missing pet — and they usually do according to Hall. Then, they ask if they know what direction it may have gone and also ask about some history of the pet. The volunteers hang fliers and posters, talk to neighbors and check all the local pet shelters and social media sites including NextDoor. Hall said her group has safely continued on page 28

returned some pets to their homes after five weeks of being missing. “We’ve learned some of the patterns of dogs when they’re out,” Hall said. “Many will do a particular route, circle and come back to certain areas.”

In some cases, the pet rescuers must use humane traps. Hall said when a dog gets into “flight mode,” sometimes they won’t respond to their owner’s call.

“It’s a survival technique,” Hall said.

“Everything’s a threat to them. That’s where the humane traps come in really handy.” These traps consist of a wire metal crate with a door that closes when the animal goes inside it to eat whatever little treat the volunteer has placed there.

One Roseville resident, Donna Bishop, inadvertently became connected with the lost pets group when her own recently adopted border collie and Australian shepherd mix, Rainey, broke free from her harness and bolted while at The Fountains shopping center in Roseville.

Bishop and her husband spent hours searching for the 2-year-old pup, alerted the local pet stores and posted pictures of Rainey on every social media site they could find. “My husband and I were just beside ourselves,” Bishop said.

Four worried hours later, the Bishops received a call from Hall who said she had a visual on the dog. In a business area near The Fountains, the Bishops found Hall and a few other volunteers with Rainey who was tangled in a mound of blackberry bushes. “A man named Brian put on a long-sleeved shirt, gloves and a hat, and went through the berries with clippers to cut her out,” recalled Bishop. It was a hot, summer day, and when Rainey was finally safe in her owner’s arms again, she was extremely thirsty and her paws were burned from the blacktop.

The Bishops’ gratitude toward the kind and dedicated volunteers was overflowing.

“They’re amazing people,” she beamed.

“I’ve never heard of a group like this.”

Bishop said now Rainey doesn’t even leave the yard, but can’t get enough of running after a tennis ball or catching toys in the air.

Hall said the heartwarming stories of found pets are abundant, but highly recommends that owners microchip their pets. She has been able to return lost pets to their homes within hours because of microchips. Each device, the size of a grain of rice, has a unique ID number that can be scanned at a veterinary clinic or by anyone with a microchip scanner. Implanting the chip does not require surgery and will last the lifetime of the pet.
