WINNER BEST: BOAT REPAIR
Steve & the Bentley Team wish to express our appreciation for being voted #1!
SUPERIOR BOAT REPAIR & SALES BY RACHEL ZIRIN
Superior Boat Repair & Sales was voted best boat repair in Folsom by Folsom Telegraph readers in the 2018 Best of the Best contest for another year in a row and there is no surprise why. In 2009, Bob Bense was laid off from a boat company he spent 29 years with as the recession hit. “I [managed the] distribution center for the western United States. In order to survive, [the company] closed all four of their distribution centers,” Bense said. “It was at this time, I had to make a very difficult decision. Do I stay in the marine industry? I prayed a lot and decided to stay in the industry that I loved. My wife and family were all very supportive. So I decided to go into business for myself. I started a marine service center. Each year, more and more business came my way. I expanded into boat sales, new and used. I started with one employee and now we employee 18 people.” Bense chose the marine industry because of his love of water skiing and boating. “I grew up in a boating family and learned to water ski at a very young age out on Folsom Lake,” he said. When asked what sets Superior Boat Repair & Sales apart from others like it in the industry, Bense said great employees and culture.

FiveSTAR Landscape was voted 2018’s best landscape design service in Folsom in the Telegraph’s annual Best of the Best contest. The local landscaping business has been in the industry for more than 35 years and has been successful in their field of expertise. General Manager Tim Bell said FiveSTAR Landscape was started based on the love of outdoors, a passion to help people and change their lives through nature. “It’s rewarding to design and create a beautiful landscape,” Bell said. “The look on a client’s face when they’ve seen the design

CARTER’S CARPET RESTORATION BY RACHEL ZIRIN
Carter’s Carpet Restoration, a family-run El Dorado Hills-based business, won the Telegraph’s 2018 Best of the Best award for best carpet cleaning in Folsom. With 24 years of service in the industry under their belt, owner Dean Carter said that his company’s commitment to quality and excellent customer service is what helps them excel – something reflected in the award. “I think it’s fantastic,” Carter said. “I think it just shows that we’re doing what we should do. We’re giving the customers the best value, giving them the best carpet cleaning there is and obviously giving them excellent customer service as well.” Customer service is the bottom line for Carter’s Carpet Restoration. This, paired with a unique cleaning technique that allows for faster carpet drying times, is a winning combination in Carter’s book. “That’s where it starts and end,” he said. “We do steam cleaning, but it’s a super deep cleaning and an incredibly fast dry time. The carpets are actually dry to the touch before

we leave the home, which is very unique to this industry.” Carter said that his company utilizes the most powerful cleaning machines on the market using rotary-extractor technology, which adds extra pressure to the carpet. “It’s a complete washing of the fiber,” Carter said. “We follow up with a call anywhere from a couple to 10 days afterwards to make sure the customers are still happy.” Customer service and the human element to the job are the things that keep Carter’s passion alive for his business. “I enjoy [working] with people,” Carter said. “I enjoy being in multiple homes and [working] with multiple different personalities and people – not staying in one place all day and just being able to meet new and interesting people everyday. That’s the biggest draw.”

LITTLE FOLKS UNIVERSITY
Thank you!
BY RACHEL ZIRIN
Little Folks University has been offering infant through school-age programs for more than 10 years, and it is no surprise they were voted best of the best in Folsom for their services. The local school took top honors in the Telegraph’s 2018 Best of the Best for local summer camp, child day care and preschool. Owner and Director Bonnie Bernstein opened the school in July 2006 after having a lifelong love of working with children. “I started working with children in my high school years in an early childhood elective class,” she said. “Working closely with children enabled me to grow and learn with them. I quickly realized I could not only provide a place for children to thrive as an individual, but that I wanted a place for teachers to excel in the same ways.” Bernstein said children touch people’s lives in many ways such as making you laugh or making you cry. “It’s easy to work hard for someone so innocent,” she said. “The feeling that you are making changes in

WINNER BEST: VETERINARY HOSPITAL
FOLSOM VETERINARY HOSPITAL BY RACHEL ZIRIN
Folsom Veterinary Hospital was voted best veterinary hospital in Folsom by Telegraph readers in the 2018 Best of the Best contest. Opened by Dr. William E. Cobb in 1974, this family-owned local business has been serving man’s best friends with love and care. Owner Genie Cobb-Hamilton, daughter of William, said when the business first opened there wasn’t much in Folsom. “The hospital was one of the furthest buildings on the edge of town,” she said. “Dr. Cobb saw a lot of potential when he opened the hospital in Folsom, even though it was such a small town.” Genie was raised into the veterinary business starting at 2 years old. “My parents took me to the office where I visited with clients in the lobby, played with the sick dogs and cats and supervised my father as to what need to be done,” she said. “When I left high school, I went to work for Waldenbooks where I moved into management quickly,” she said. “However, after a while, looking for a change, I started working at Folsom Vet-

erinary Hospital in 1980 with my father. We worked well together, and as time went by, Folsom started growing, and so did we.” Genie said when her father opened the local veterinary hospital, he provided low-cost spay and neutering. “This was a real practice-builder,” she said. “Now we still provide low-cost spay and neutering, as well as 25 percent vaccine clinics from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesdays and dental specials two times yearly. These specials are provided along with our regular services.” Genie said in addition to their specials, their doctors are also what set them apart as a veterinary hospital. “We are thrilled about winning the Best of the Best contest,” she said. “We won in 2010 and 2011, so now we are really excited about winning this year.”

Folsom resident Adrian Blanco was voted best jeweler in Folsom by Telegraph readers in the 2018 Best of the Best contest, and there is no secret why he shines bright. From diamonds to estate jewels, Adrian Blanco Jewelry has what you need, but when it comes to service and personality, why would you go anywhere else? Opened in February of 2017, Blanco brings more to the table than just a sale. On top of many services that are hard to come by, he brings his genuine self that has impressed clients to become as loyal as they come. Getting into the jewelry industry was just an after-school job for Blanco, but he worked his way up and learned much of what he knows today. He attended the Gemological Institute of America when he realized he really enjoyed what he was doing. “I thought going to the school was important because I didn’t go to college, so I needed something that would make me look more legit,” he laughed. “It’s been a great journey. I think what attracted me most to the industry was the relationships you build. I focus more on the people and connecting with folks, as opposed to the sale.” When you walk into Blanco’s shop, you don’t get bombarded by salesman flashing the biggest diamonds 12

I hope when people come in here, they come away from it with a personalized experience, and jewelry just happens to be a part of it,” he said. Blanco said he didn’t imagine owning a jewelry store would be his career. “Early on, I realized that it’s not necessarily about the jewelry, but the relationships we build through it,” he said. “For every engagement, anniversary, to push presents, to be a part of that celebration is so unique. That’s what I love about my job.” Blanco said he is ecstatic about winning this award. “I’m ecstatic about winning this year’s award. It’s almost like an embarrassment of riches,” he said. “I feel so fortunate to be a part of this amazing community, and I appreciate all the love and support that we’ve received all year.”
WINNER BEST: LIVE THEATRICAL GROUP
SUTTER STREET THEATRE BY RACHEL ZIRIN
Folsom’s Sutter Street Theatre has been voted best live theatrical group in Folsom by Folsom Telegraph readers in the 2018 Best of the Best contest. The locally-based community theater company opened in November of 2006 and since has been fully alive and successful producing production after production. Owners Connie Mockenhaupt and Mike Jimena have been professional artists, actors, musicians and dancers their entire career, but when the City of Folsom and Folsom Chamber of Commerce asked them to open a local theater, it seemed too perfect for them. When asked why he personally chose the entertainment industry, Jimena said it chose him. “You do not choose the arts, they choose you!” he said. “When the City of Folsom and Chamber came to us and asked us to open a theater on Sutter Street, it seemed like a perfect marriage.” Jimena said diversity is what set the Sutter Street Theatre a part from others like it in the industry. “We have 22 different productions a year – musicals, dramas, comedies and radio shows – edgy to

Jimena said his favorite thing about the theatre is that everyone is like family. “We always joke that we don’t hire actors, we adopt them,” Mockenhaupt said. “They come and they love being here. It’s a fun place and it’s very comfortable.” Mockenhaupt said they have had more than 800 actors over the course of their 10 years as well as more than 300 productions.

with my personal beliefs, and I consider it a service and a calling.” Lohmann said she wants the business not only to be a blessing to her family, but those they serve and those they employ. “I didn’t get into this business because it’s the ‘hot market.’ I got into it because I love working with seniors, and I love the idea that my business can help them stay safely in the comfort of their own home,” she said. Lohmann said she is so honored to have won this award.

WINNER BEST: LOCAL ATTORNEY
WINNER BEST: SPORTS BAR, BARTENDER
FLB ENTERTAINMENT CENTER
CYNTHIA BROWN OF CINDER LAW TELEGRAPH STAFF
Cynthia Brown of Cinder Law was the top pick for best local attorney in Folsom by Telegraph readers in the 2018 Best of the Best contest. Brown has more than 18 years of experience in estate planning and has enjoyed helping hundreds of clients with this important matter throughout El Dorado, Sacramento and Placer counties. “I really enjoy educating people on estate planning,” she said. “People have varying degrees of knowledge on the subject, and it is very satisfying to have the opportunity to teach my clients something new, then they are able to go and enlighten their own friends and families a little on the subject.” Brown said a lot of people are under the common misconception that because they don’t own much, they don’t need to have an estate plan in place. “They certainly need to plan for after they die, but the reality is, estate planning is much more than just ‘post death’ planning,” she said. “Estate planning involves a lot of important decisions that could protect folks if they develop a debilitating illness, long before passing away.” Brown found in her experience that most people need, at a minimum, a will or living trust, an advance medical directive and power of attorney. or disabled children should have a legal guardianship established as well. Brown offers a free initial consultation so that any questions folks may have regarding the process, the time involved, cost, etc. can be answered ahead of time. “Everyone’s situation is unique so a personal consultation with each client is vital in determining that individual or family’s particular needs and goals,” she said.
FLB Entertainment Center has been voted best sports bar in Folsom year after year in the Telegraph’s Best of the Best contest. Once again, the local sports bar won by a landslide, and it is no mystery why. This is the FLB Entertainment Center’s ninth year winning in a row and Owner Dan Dreher said they are always working to make their place better every year. FLB Entertainment Center is constantly improving their place and listening to the customers, he said. They do what it takes to improve and it shows with the voting every year, Dreher said. “It is so great to win! The FLB Entertainment Center is a place for everyone,” Dreher said. “A lot of places are specific to younger people, to families or to adults; but FLB is a place that has something for everybody to have a good time.” The entertainment center not only has a bowling alley, but a grill, sports bar and casino. FLB has been in business for more than 38 years as a family-run company. After coming to America at the age of 18 and $18 in debt, Wally, Dreher’s father, worked his way up by learning numerous trades. Eventually, he saved enough

money to purchase FLB in 1979. Wally speaks various languages, and is a true inspiration and vision of the ‘American Dream.’ “My family has been running this place since I was born,” Dreher said. “I grew up going to work with my mom and dad, and I have loved it since day one. I always saw myself working for the company, and I truly enjoy it.” FLB Entertainment Center’s Brad Walker was voted best bartender in Folsom for another consecutive year as well.

The full-service facility offers vehicle car wash packages, detailing and oil change services. “We are part of the community,” said General Manager Jon Tilford. “We enjoy it – we’re like a big family.” He said much of the company’s success is because of the quality customer experience that its long-time employees provide. “It’s just customer service,” Tilford said. “Anyone can wash a car. It’s having the right employees and the right people.” The car wash has been serving Folsom for more

The car wash is a Blue Coral Green certified facility that uses a water recycling system to keep contaminated water out of the rivers and streams, and uses approximately three times less water than a driveway wash.

Gilmore Heating, Air & Solar has been in El Dorado County since 1978. The family-run business took first in multiple categories in the Telegraph’s 2018 Best of the Best contest in Folsom and El Dorado Hills. In Folsom, the local business took home the award for best heating and air contractor. Darrin Gilmore, general manager of the company, said what sets his business apart from others in the industry is their focus on their customers. “My dad is very adamant about taking care of the clients,” he said. “You have to put yourself in the customers’ shoes. First and foremost, you take care of them, and they will bless you with more customers and more referrals.” Darrin said at the end of the day, the clients’ needs come first. “Our customer service is excellent. We’ve been extremely successful because of it,” he said. John Gilmore started his career by designing heating and air conditioning systems for a large residential firm in Southern California, where he rose to the position of vice president of operations. WINNER BEST: BANK
WELLS FARGO BY RACHEL ZIRIN
Wells Fargo was voted best bank in Folsom in the Telegraph’s 2018 Best of the Best contest. In 1852, Henry Wells and William Fargo founded Wells Fargo & Co. to provide banking and express service to pioneer miners, merchants and settlers of the Gold Rush in California. In the Sierra foothills, Wells Fargo agents such as Charles T.H. Palmer, of Folsom, and Theodore Tracy, of Placerville, served minors in remote diggings with colorful names like ‘Whiskey Bar’ and ‘Grizzly Flat.’ Minors depended on Wells Fargo to exchange their gold dust into coins, send funds to family back eat, deliver mail, transport valuables and even file important legal papers. Julie Campbell, vice president of corporate communications for the Northern and Central California region, said although there are a lot of choices, when it comes to banking, Wells Fargo takes banking personally. “Each of our customers defines financial success differently and personally. Knowing what financial success 24

Designing Dreams Flooring & Surfaces was voted best customer service and best flooring store in Folsom by Telegraph readers in the 2018 Best of the Best contest for another year in a row. The local business was founded in 1986 by Michael and Jenee Compagnone in El Dorado Hills, but in 2013, the company was purchased by Randy Mintz and Raul Borodi. The duo moved the location of the store to Folsom and only a year later, opened their Granite Bay location at 7095 Douglass Blvd. “Both Raul and I have backgrounds in construction and design, and felt the community needed a local flooring and remodeler committed to quality and service in Folsom and El Dorado Hills,” Borodi said. “Our mission is to provide our customers with first class service and products at value prices.” Borodi said the business is more versatile than most retailers, designers and contractors. “We have retail stores to select products, interior designers to help with color and selections, project managers to work daily on the progress of construction, and craftsmen that are employed by our company to insure the quality and speed of job completion,” he said.

WINNER BEST: THAI RESTAURANT
THAI PARADISE BY RACHEL ZIRIN
Thai Paradise took top honors for another year in a row for best Thai restaurant in Folsom during the Telegraph’s 2018 Best of the Best contest. Opened in May of 2008, owners Alex and Jarunee Fleming started their dream. “My wife is an award-winning Thai chef, and she always wanted to have her own restaurant,” Alex Fleming said. He said when they got married, Jarunee would always cook Thai food at home. “A lot of Thai food is cooked in a wok over high heat, so it kept setting off the smoke alarm,” he said. “[I] decided [we] should open a restaurant so she could do what she wanted to do, which is to make people happy with her food. Now [I] gets to eat her award-winning Thai recipes every day with no alarms.” After a year of searching for the perfect location, they stumbled upon their current place at 2770 E Bidwell St #100 in Folsom. “Our recipes are straight from the Royal Thai Palace, with daily lunch and dinner specials,” Alex said. “We offer authentic curries, rice dishes, noodle soups and noodle stir fry bowls. Catering is our specialty, and we are constantly updating our menu to feature fresh, new and delicious Thai dishes.”
2770 E Bidwell Street Suite 100, Folsom
916 984-8988 or thaiparadisefolsom.com Alex said what sets his restaurant apart is ‘simply the best food.’ “Jarunee learned her amazing skills at a five-star hotel in Bangkok, Thailand. She brought recipes from there, plus her family’s secret recipes when she came to the United States,” he said. “Her recipes produce real authentic Thai food unlike any other restaurant in the area. It has the tastes you would find in Bangkok. Also, all of [our] cooks and servers are Thai, as is the décor of [our] dining room, which adds to the ambience at Thai Paradise.” The local business has been voted the best Thai restaurant every year since they opened. “We are excited and happy that people like our food as much as we like cooking and serving it to them. It helps us know that it was a good choice to follow our passions and dreams opening Thai Paradise 10 years ago,” Alex said. “If you voted for us, thank you. We are happy to make you happy. If you haven’t eaten yet at Thai Paradise, come give our delicious food a try. We can help you choose menu items to match your tastes. We look forward to serving you.”

Hoshall’s Salon & Spa was voted best day spa in Folsom in the Telegraph’s 2018 Best of the Best contest and they are sudsing with excitement. Opened in 1974, Hoshall’s Salon & Spa is a staple in the Folsom business community. Owners Mary Brigham and Kathy Fennessy fell in love with the business and adoring clients and employees, which is what prompted them to take over. “When Bill Hoshall decided to retire, it was a natural transition for us to become owners. Becoming owners has given us the opportunity to honor the people we serve,” Brigham said. When asked why they chose the industry, both said it chose them. “I grew up with the Hoshall family going to Catholic School,” Brigham said. “After graduating high school in 1981, I started as a receptionist.” Fennessy was a client of Hoshall’s since elementary school and, in 1985, she started working

WINNER BEST: VISION/EYEGLASS CENTER
SITE FOR SORE EYES BY RACHEL ZIRIN
Opened in September of 2010, Site for Sore Eyes has been voted best vision/eyeglass center in Folsom in the Folsom Telegraph’s 2018 Best of the Best contest, and everyone can see why. After four years of working in corporate optical, Owner Ashley Weston was tired of sale pressure and polices of big retail chains. “I was lucky enough to be recruited into Site for Sore Eyes in 2005 and really liked the culture of the company as a whole. After 5 years with the franchise, there was an opportunity to open a location of my own in Folsom, and having lived in the community, I was excited at the possibility of starting a new location,” she said. Weston originally happened to fall upon Opticianry. She said when she was 18 years old, she fully intended to go to veterinary school when she started working part time in optical sales. “I quickly realized I liked the different aspects of the industry merging healthcare and fashion. I found I really loved working with people and helping them with their eye care needs,” she said. “It’s very rewarding to help patients, young and old, see the world better, and sometimes helping children see well for the first time. Within two years of working in the industry, I obtained my Opticianry license, and the rest is history.”
404 Blue Ravine Road, Suite 400, Folsom
916-983-9985 or siteforsoreeyes.com When asked what sets her business apart from others in the industry, she said working in a fun environment. “What most people say when they come to us is that we all seem to love working together and have fun, and that’s exactly it. I have been so fortunate to find an amazing team, who are more like family than colleagues, of opticians and techs who are so smart, friendly, honest and great with each of our customers,” Weston said. “We are excited about what we do and enjoy continuing our education with new skills and knowledge of our industry.” Weston said winning the Best of the Best contest means so much to her and she is truly humbled. “We work very hard day in and day out, sometimes many extra hours, and its so relieving to be honored and recognized for our efforts,” she said. “There are days that it feels like nothing is going right and it’s always our goal to provide the best service to our patients. What we do is so personal, and we feel like we know so many of our customers closely like friends and family. We wish to continue this tradition and will strive to keep being the Best of the Best for years to come.”

WINNER BEST: LOCAL HERO
FELIPE RODRIGUEZ,
FOLSOM FIRE DEPARTMENT FIRE CHIEF BY RACHEL ZIRIN
PHOTOS BY DOUG GULER FOR THE TELEGRAPH
Folsom High’s varsity football program won its third state championship since 2010 last season. The team, as well as its coach, Kris Richardson, are winners of the Folsom Telegraph’s Best of the Best contest for the second straight year.
WINNER BEST: SPORTS TEAM, COACH
KRIS RICHARDSON
AND THE FOLSOM HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL TEAM BY MATT LONG
Folsom’s Best of the Best sports team and coach are repeat winners from a year ago. Folsom High’s football team won the Best of the Best sports team for the second consecutive year, while the team’s coach, Kris Richardson, was again voted Best of the Best coach. “It’s pretty awesome to get that recognition,” the 49-year-old Richardson said. “I’ve been coaching 23 years and sometimes coaches can wear out their welcome, but I still have a great relationship with the kids and the parents. I’m humbled and proud to be a part of this program. It’s not all about me either. I’ve got 20 coaches in the program.” The Bulldogs have been one of the top programs in the Sacramento area for the last 10 years, compiling a win-loss record over that time of 131-13. Folsom has won six section titles from 2010-2016 and the two years it didn’t win it still reached the championship game. The Bulldogs also won state titles in 2010, 2014 and last year in 2017. Over the last six seasons, Folsom has more wins (72) than any Division I program in the state. St. John Bosco has 66 wins, while De La Salle has 63 wins. “I’m extremely proud of what we’ve accomplished,”
Folsom Fire Chief Felipe Rodriguez was voted best local hero by Folsom Telegraph readers in the 2018 Best of the Best contest and he is flattered. Rodriguez was born and raised in San Francisco. When he was around 7 or 8 years old, the fire fighters were providing free toys for families in need and at the time his mother was a single mom and went to the fire department to sign up. “I told myself that day that I wanted to grow up to be a fire fighter. I followed my dreams ever since that time and became a fire fighter,” Rodriguez said. In 1993, Rodriguez was living in Sacramento County and was studying at Folsom Lake College. He said he fell in love with the area and told himself he would live in Folsom one day. In 1994, he enlisted in the United States Navy. He completed basic firefighting training and then served as a Hospital Corpsman. Five years later, he became a professional fire fighter. “We learned basic fire fighting in the U.S. Navy, as well as emergency medical skills,” he said. “That pretty much paved the way to become a fire fighter.” Previous to coming to serve Folsom, Rodriguez worked in Oceanside, where he enjoyed sailing with his wife on
the ocean as well as spending time on the beach during his time off. Rodriguez also enjoys the great outdoors and loves to camp and spend time with his family. Rodriguez has been Folsom’s Fire Chief since June 1, 2017 and has been very active in the Folsom community. The father of five said he is honored and flattered to have been voted best local hero in Folsom. “I am honored and flattered, but what’s a hero? It’s the women and men of the fire department who day in and day out, do what they do. It’s the women and men of the police department who are out here serving our community,” he said. “It’s the garbage truck driver, the utility worker who is making sure water is running to all of the houses. It’s all of those who work throughout the city that are public servants for the community – those are the true heroes.” Rodriguez said the true heroes are those who serve the Folsom community as well as those who live in it. “It’s all of those who work with me on a daily basis to provide service to our community. It’s all of our teachers in the schools. It’s the mothers and fathers who are at home raising their families – our future leaders and future public servants,” he said. “It’s those who make Folsom a magical community; those are the true heroes. Thank you for the opportunity!”

said Richardson, who’s taught at Folsom High since 1996. “You think of all the other high schools in the state, so to have the most wins and be in the elite company of St. John Bosco and De La Salle is impressive.” To Richardson, who’s been the head varsity coach since 2005, the key to success has been hard work by both he and his staff and of course the players. “For me, I just show up and work every day,” Richardson said. “I want to be better today than I was yesterday. For the kids, it’s a grind in January and February when we get on them, but the kids have bought in and that’s been the key to our success.”

WINNER BEST: PRIVATE SCHOOL
ST. JOHN NOTRE DAME SCHOOL BY RACHEL ZIRIN
St. John Notre Dame School was voted best private school in Folsom for the fourth year in a row by Folsom Telegraph readers in the 2018 Best of the Best contest. Opened in 1962, St. John Notre Dame School was built to accommodate the growing Folsom area after St. John the Baptist was at capacity. “St. John Notre Dame School exists to serve children,” said Principal Keith Martin. “We strive to inspire lifelong learning to help our students mature into healthy people of faith, thought, integrity and action. We recognize parents as the primary educators of their children. Our goal is to help our students develop to their fullest potential as they begin to take their place as responsible Catholic citizens in our society.” As an educational ministry of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, SJNDS emphasizes a religious foundation for all students. The Catholic faith is an academic subject in its own right, and it is also integrated into all other academic disciplines and school activities.

“We are one of the few diocesan schools with our own Campus Minister who leads us in community outreach and service ministries,” he said. “The religion curriculum challenges students to participate in worship, act as part of a community, and realize that each person deserves love and respect. Students study scripture and learn Catholic doctrine. They prepare for the Sacraments of Reconciliation, Eucharist and Confirmation.” Martin said the community at SJNDS is humbled and thrilled about winning for another year in a row. “The community at SJNDS is incredibly humbled and thrilled about winning this prestigious award four years in a row!” he said. “We hope to be a force of good and serve to the greater Folsom community.”

JORDAN RICHARDS BY MATT LONG
COURTESY
Jordan Richards played on Folsom’s first state championship football team in 2010, and prior to that played for years in the Jr. Bulldogs youth football program. After playing four years at Stanford University, he was drafted by the New England Patriots. He’s played the last three years with the Patriots, including being part of the 2017 Super Bowl champions.

Jordan Richards is currently a member of the New England Patriots, but his football journey began years ago in Folsom. Richards grew up playing in the Folsom Jr. Bulldogs youth football organization, before moving on to star at Folsom High as a running back and defensive back. He was a member of Folsom High’s 2010 team, which won the school’s first state football championship. “The most memorable thing to me about Folsom is all the good friends I grew up with playing football, and even basketball, from a young age,” Richards said. “I played football with Dano (Graves) and Sam (Lueken) from the very beginning. Having my dad coach, and Dano’s dad and Sam’s dad, who was the pastor at my church, and Coach Babineaux, it was just nice having those guys mentor us as we grew up into young men. Then Coach (Kris) Richardson and his family came along; it was just a recipe for a good opportunity for all of us.” After graduating in 2011, Richards, 25, played safety at Stanford University for four years before being drafted by the New England Patriots in
2015. Richards was picked in the second round with the 64th overall selection. He was on the Patriots Super Bowl winning team in 2017, and played on the team last season when they lost the Super Bowl to the Eagles. In three seasons with the Patriots, the 5-11, 210-pound Richards has played in 41 regular season games, starting seven of them. He’s made 49 tackles, defended three passes, and forced two fumbles. As a member of a successful professional sports team, Richards garnered enough votes to win the Folsom Telegraph’s Best of the Best Home Grown Folsom athlete. “I would have never thought of me having this award,” Richards said. “I’m thankful for the opportunity to play football and hopefully it helps others dream big too. Not to take away from my opportunity here playing professional football for the Patriots, but my life highlight to me was playing football with the guys I grew up with. I will always remember playing with those guys. That’s the cool part, the stuff that matters.”

Patelco Credit Union was voted best credit union in Folsom by Telegraph readers in the 2018 Best of the Best contest and their long-time success proves why. Patelco Credit Union was founded in 1936 with $500 in assets. The credit union served the employees of Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company. “Today, we service our members across the broader northern California region with more than $6 billion in assets, placing Patelco in the top 1 percent of credit unions by asset size in the nation,” said Branch Manager Anna Macias. When asked what sets Patelco apart from others in the industry, she said it is Patelco’s commitment to improving the financial health and well-being of its members. “Patelco is committed to improving the financial health and well-being of its members and the broader Folsom community. As a non-profit organization, all proceeds are reinvested into Patelco for the benefit of the member, be it reduced fees or higher dividends on deposits, or to the broader community through

Best Patio Dining & Casual Dining!
Placerville-based casino Red Hawk Casino has been voted the best casino in Folsom in the 2018 Best of the Best contest by the readers of the Telegraph. Since its opening in December of 2008, Red Hawk Casino has provided its guests with superior gaming, entertainment and dining experiences. The 24-hour casino provides a wide range of slots and table games, as well as childcare, retail and various restaurants. “Our guests know that a first-class casino experience and top-notch service from the friendly team members await them on every visit,” said Bryan DeLugo, general manager. He said taking top honors, yet again, is awesome. “We’re thrilled to have, again, been voted Best of the Best by the Telegraph readers,” DeLugo said. “Our

Placerville 530-677-7000 or Redhawkcasino.com guests enjoy winning more jackpots, more often and these awards are a reflection of the one-of-a-kind casino experience we provide our guests each and every day.” DeLugo said the casino has 1,300 of the friendliest team members he’s ever had the opportunity to work with. “The Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians are incredible to work for, and are extremely supportive of all the team members here at Red Hawk, which, in turn, helps all of us provide our guests with the best dining, the best entertainment and the best casino experience,” he said.
