In 2009, Bob Bense was laid off from a boat company he spent 29 years with as the recession hit. “I [managed the] distribution center for the western United States. In order to survive, [the company] closed all four of their distribution centers,” Bense said. “It was at this time, I had to make a very difficult decision. Do I stay in the marine industry? I prayed a lot and decided to stay in the industry that I loved. My wife and family were all very supportive. So I decided to go into business for myself. I started a marine service center. Each year, more and more business came my way. I

Pamela Hayes opened her dance studio after a lifetime of performing professional ballet around the world. Pamela Hayes Classical Ballet is a pre-professional school and company based in El Dorado Hills. Among many ballet disciplines, Pamela Hayes bases its training in the Royal Academy of Dance, the largest teaching organization in the world. This approach emphasizes a combination of correct anatomical placement and strong techniques which allowed for greater artistic freedom. “Our goal is to offer an exceptional production capturing the beauty of the ballet,” said Pamela Hayes, founder and artistic director. “If you already share a love of the arts or have never yet seen a ballet production, I invite you to come see one of our productions and experience local quality ballet. ogy, which adds extra pressure to the carpet. “It’s a complete washing of the fiber,” Carter said. “We follow up with a call anywhere from a couple to 10 days afterwards to make sure the customers are still happy.” Customer service and the human element to the job are the things that keep Carter’s passion alive for his business. “I enjoy [working] with people,” Carter said. “I enjoy being in multiple homes and [working] with multiple different personalities and people – not staying in one place all day and just being able to meet new and interesting people everyday. Folsom resident Adrian Blanco was voted best jeweler in El Dorado Hills by Telegraph readers in the 2018 Best of the Best contest, and there is no secret why he shines bright. From diamonds to estate jewels, Adrian Blanco Jewelry has what you need, but when it comes to service and personality, why would you go anywhere else? Opened in February of 2017, Blanco brings more to the table than just a sale. On top of many services that are hard to come by, he brings his genuine self that has impressed clients to become as loyal as they come. Getting into the jewelry industry was just an after-school job for Blanco, but he worked his way up and learned much of what he knows today. He attended the Gemological Institute of America when he realized he really enjoyed what he was doing. “I thought going to the school was important because I didn’t go to college, so I needed something that would make me look more legit,” he laughed. “It’s been a great journey. I hope when people come in here, they come away from it with a personalized experience, and jewelry just happens to be a part of it,” he said. Blanco said he didn’t imagine owning a jewelry store would be his career. “Early on, I realized that it’s not necessarily about the jewelry, but the relationships we build through it,” he said. “For every engagement, anniversary, to push presents, to be a part of that celebration is so unique. That’s what I love about my job.” Blanco said he is ecstatic about winning this award. “I’m ecstatic about winning this year’s award. It’s almost like an embarrassment of riches,” he said. “I feel so fortunate to be a part of this amazing community, and I appreciate all the love and support that we’ve received all year.”

Owner Gail Lohmann opened the Cameron Park-based business in 2009 as working with seniors is one of her passions. “My first real job was working at an assisted living facility when I was 15,” she said. “After college, I worked for a California non-profit nursing home association for 12 years, and I also volunteered with seniors in our community through my church and with Meals on Wheels.” Lohmann’s goal was to help people enjoy their time at home because so many of them are isolated, she said. “In 2008, I saw an ad for Visiting Angels on television and realized that I

Kid’s Camp took home multiple awards for an additional year, and it is no surprise why. The El Dorado Hills-based business was voted best summer camp, child day care and preschool in El Dorado Hills in the Folsom Telegraph’s 2018 Best of the Best contest. Opened in January of 2008, Kid’s Camp provides premium, drop-in hourly child care on a flexible schedule for ages six weeks to 12 years old. Business is booming as Owner Kittie Emami has various locations all over the Sacramento area proving success. Emami said she knew she wanted to work in the child care industry since high school. “In high school, I was able to work at a preschool during two of my [classes]. That

BEN SWEET Best of Best EDH sports coach is ‘sweet’ honor BY MATT LONG
Ben Sweet coached defensive backs at Oak Ridge the last four seasons, and has helped make the Oak Ridge varsity football team’s defense annually a tough group to play against. Sweet, 24, is a 2012 graduate of Oak Ridge. He played youth football with the Jr. Trojans, and then all four years at the high school, finishing as the team’s starting free safety his senior year. Right out of high school, he was hired as the defensive coordinator of the Jr. Trojan midget youth football team, before moving to the high school varsity staff in 2014. Sweet recently accepted a new coaching job, as this coming season he will be the defensive coordinator of Whitney High’s varsity football team. Despite the move, Sweet is the Folsom Telegraph’s winner of the Best of the Best El Dorado Hills sports coach. “I’m so humbled,” Sweet said. “I love my players, and the way I coach I like to develop a bond with them. I’m super honored because there are a lot of good coaches in this area. Thanks to whoever voted for me.” Sweet loved his time coaching at Oak Ridge, but the opportunity to be a defensive coordinator, and more importantly a bigger and better job opportunity,

The El Dorado Hills Soccer Club has served thousands of youth soccer players since being created in 1984. The soccer club, as its vision statement reads, is a community-based organization in which its members; including players, parents, families, coaches, teams and the local community, collectively provide an enriching environment that enables growth, development, success and positive values, while creating lifelong experiences for our soccer community. This statement, put into action, has helped the club earn enough votes to earn the Folsom Telegraph’s Best of the Best Youth Sports Team in El Dorado Hills. The El Dorado Hills soccer club has nearly 2,000 youth under its umbrella, as there are 1,400 recreational soccer players and 430 competitive players in the club. Teams range from under-19 years of age to under-5 at the youngest division. Altogether, the club has approximately 120 recreational teams, as well as 30 competitive teams. The club is proud and honored to received enough votes to be named the Telegraph’s Best of the Best youth sports team in El Dorado Hills. “The club winning the award shows that we are doing a good job of offering our community the opportunity to play soccer across the continuum of ages, ability, and desired intensity,” Club President Efrain Mercado said. “We pride ourselves on being a community club, and we look forward to continuing with our focus on the needs of kids to have fun playing soccer.”

It’s an opportunity for growth to go out on my own and I’m forcing myself to do it and do something different. My goal is to eventually coach at the college level.”

The family-run business took first in multiple categories in the Telegraph’s 2018 Best of the Best contest in Folsom and El Dorado Hills. In El Dorado Hills, the local business took home the award for best heating and air contractor. Darrin Gilmore, general manager of the company, said what sets his business apart from others in the industry is their focus on their customers. “My dad is very adamant about taking care of the clients,” he said. “You have to put yourself in the customers’ shoes. First and foremost, you take care of them, and they will bless you with more customers and more referrals.” Darrin said at the end of the day,
the clients’ needs come first. “Our customer service is excellent. We’ve been extremely successful because of it,” he said. John Gilmore started his career by designing heating and air conditioning systems for a large residential firm in Southern California, where he rose to the position of vice president of operations. In 1972, John moved on to manage and help build a new Southern California company, Certified Air and Heating, into one of the country’s largest service and replacement companies at that time. In 1973, he decided to open his own heating and air company in Glendale, which still operates today under its own management. In 1979, John opened up the cur-

Opened in September of 2010, Site for Sore Eyes has been voted best vision/ eyeglass center in El Dorado Hills in the Folsom Telegraph’s 2018 Best of the Best contest, and everyone can see why. After four years of working in corporate optical, Owner Ashley Weston was tired of sale pressure and polices of big retail chains. “I was lucky enough to be recruited into Site for Sore Eyes in 2005 and really liked the culture of the company as a whole. After 5 years with the franchise, there was an opportunity to open a location of my own in Folsom, and having lived in the community, I was excited at the possibility of starting a new location,” she said. Weston originally happened to fall upon Opticianry. She said when she was 18 years old, she fully intended to go to veterinary school when she started working part time in optical sales. “I quickly realized I liked the different aspects of the industry merging healthcare and fashion. I found I really loved working with people and helping them with their eye care needs,” she said. “It’s very rewarding to help patients, young and old, see the world better, and sometimes helping children see well for the first time. Within two years of working in the industry, I obtained my Opticianry license, and the rest is history.” When asked what sets her business
