Sharing some local Auburn history

I

recently had the pleasure of speaking with Harvey Eisley. Harvey is a loyal reader to my column as well as a longtime local in Auburn. Harvey is also related to the prominent Eisley Nursery and was happy to share some of Eisley Nursery local history with me, to share with you.

Harvey called me several weeks ago to talk about Ways to Save water. He has some g reat ideas a nd made me think about how long my hot water is available to me, once I have used it from a faucet, but you will have to wait for that. First, I would like to share some fun history that Harvey shared about his family’s nursery.

E i sle y Nu r s er y w a s established in 1931 by Harvey’s mother, Lila. She saw a busy cor ner at Nevada and Palm Streets which, at the time, was Highway 49 and is currently where Eisley Nursey is located today. L i la decided to sell pansies to the passersby. If you look at the Eisley Nursery sign, you will see pansies on it, making a wonderful connection for anyone who looks at that sign and knows what it represents.

As kids, Harvey and his siblings would hand-dig the pansies by color — yes, by color — for their customers. I don’t imagine Harvey has pansies in his garden today! And that is

how Eisley Nursery was established.

At that time, Harvey’s father, Henry, was a postman who had the first rural postal route in the Auburn area. Back then, Federal employees were not allowed to own a business. So, Henry deeded the nursery to his Mom, making her the sole owner of Pa nsy Nurser y a nd probably one of the first female business owners of her time.

So, now to w ater conservation.

Harvey has built a home or two in Auburn, being the longtime resident that he is. Here are a few things he has done to help conserve water: In his first home, he put br ic k s around the water heater which acted like insulation keeping the hot water in the hot water heater warmer for a longer period making it less necessary to heat the water artificially and thus saving water.

Harvey said in his current home which he did not build, he must wait for the hot water even when it has been recently used which is a waste of water and power i n bot h of ou r opinions.

After talking to Harvey, it made me think about how long I must wait for hot water from my kitchen or bathroom sinks. At my home the hot water heater is in the center of and under the house. So, we

don’t have it out in the garage where we must wait for the water to travel a distance to get from point A to B. After speaking with Harvey, I noticed my kitchen supplies hot water within about five seconds and will keep the hot water supply available almost instantly. My bathroom takes about 20 seconds longer when coming from the sink, but the shower takes only about 10 seconds using about one gallon of water before I can jump in — and yes, I capture that water for my garden. How long does it take your hot water to get

The bottom line is this: If you have access to the pipes that supply water to your home from the water heater to the source, then insulate them! It will save you money as well as our resources which sounds like a win-win situation to all concerned. If you can insulate your water heater, then do it. And if you can help Harvey get our legislature to change the building codes/laws to make sure every new home has such an easy fix to conservation, please contact me and help make that happen! It makes sense that a

simple and inexpensive way to save energy and water should be a mandator y addition to a new home.

Should home inspectors disclose infestation?

Dear Barry: Your column often evaluates conflict issues that arise during real estate transactions, so I offer this for you r c om ment . I recent ly pu rcha sed a mobile home from a seller who happened to be a termite inspector. Rather than hiring another company to perform the termite inspection, he provided his own report on t he proper t y, a nd t he report listed no defects of any kind. When I hired a home inspector to look at the home, his report contained several instances of moisture damage to the st r uct u re a nd recommended further investigation by a termite inspector. When these new findings were presented to the seller, he became irate and reported the home inspector to the state licensing agency for making disclosures outside his area of expertise. Now the home inspector must defend himself against censure by a government agency, and all because he was protecting the interests of me, his client. If home inspectors are not allowed to d i s clos e problem s involving infestation, then what's the point of having an inspection?

The pest inspect ion industry is strictly controlled by state bureaucracies. Accordingly, anyone not officially licensed as a pest inspector ca nnot legally disclose the presence of wood destroying organisms such as termites, fungus, carpenter bees, wood boring beetles, etc. What then are home inspectors to do when observing this type of damage in a building? Should inspectors ignore these problem, say nothing to their clients, and hope that

Fortunately, there is a simple solution, and it is all a matter of words. When ter-

mite problems are evident in a building, a home inspector may legally disclose "possible insect damage," with a recommendation for further evaluation by a licensed ter mite inspector. If fungus or dryrot problems are observed during a home inspection, it is permissible to say "apparent moisture damage," followed by the same recommendation. If your home inspector used that kind of verbiage, then the

seller acted improperly when reporting the matter to the state licensing agency. On the other hand, if the home inspector specified by name a particular type of wood-destroying organism, then he was acting outside the law and could be subject to lega l consequences.

In either case, if moisture damage was evident, this should have been disclosed in the seller's own termite report. Had such disclosure

been made, there would have been no need for disagreement between the inspectors or for invoking the powers of the state bureaucracy. The home inspector, at worst, was guilty of a professional breach. The seller, at worst, was guilty of an ethical one.

How to attract hummingbirds Watching a hummingbird is enchanting. Their tiny size and incredible speed make them a natural wonder. Flapping their wings an estimated 70 times per second, they can move in every direction, or simply float majestically in midair.

You may have observed hummingbirds in the wild, but you can increase your chances of seeing these delicate dynamos at home. You can even get one to land on your hand, with patience a nd persistence. However, before that can happen, you need to transform your backy a rd i nto a hu m m i ngbi rd haven.

Smart strategies for feeding hummingbirds

The National Audubon Society says to sustain their supercharged metabolisms, hummingbirds must eat once every 10 to 15 minutes a nd v isit between 1,000 and 2,000 flowers per day. When you provide a safe, reliable food source, it's like putting out a welcome mat for hummingbirds.

Some f lowering plants are particularly attractive to hummingbirds, such as trumpet honeysuck le, bee ba lm and sage. A hummingbird feeder is a must-have and one of the most effective ways to consistently entice and encourage hummingbirds to visit your yard.

Keep in mind, not all feeders are created equal. The Cole's Hummer High Rise Feeder is a smart choice. Scientif ica lly designed with elevated perches, these feeders make hummingbirds feel safe and comfortable,

which encourages them to consistently return. Hang in a tree, patio or garden spaces.

The do's and don'ts of attracting hummingbirds

It's easy to make a few common mistakes when you start welcoming hummingbirds to your yard. Here's a few tips: • Be conscious of beneficial insects: Small insects are an important part of a hummingbird's diet, providing essential protein to complement the nectar they drink. Try using manual or natural insect control in the afternoon when insect populations decrease.

• Do provide a water feature: Hummingbirds adore bathing.

If you add a drip fountain or mister to your yard, they'll bask in the wet wonder.

• Don't put anything but plain water into the ant moat: Water alone w ill stop ants on the Hummer High Rise Feeder.

While hummers are attracted to red, adding dye to their food is unnecessary and could be harmful to their health.

Other birds may stop and take a drink from the liquid in the moat, so never use any type of repellent or additive to the water.

• Do check feeders regularly: Check at least bi-week ly to ensure a steady supply of fresh food. Clean the feeder as needed with one part white vinegar to four parts water.

• Don't add red coloring to food : W h i le hu m mers a re attracted to red, adding dye to their food is unnecessary and could be harmful to their health.

• Do hang feeders in the shade: Too much sunshine and warmth can cause fermentation of sugar-based liquids. To prevent this, always hang feeders in the shade.

Getting a hummingbird to land on your hand

Once your feeder is in regular use, it's exciting to try to get one to land on your hand. Sit near your feeder when typically in use. Remain still as the birds must realize you're not a threat.

How much can I afford?
