get PUMPED 27th annual Folsom Handcar Derby is May 5 to 6

The 27th running of the Folsom Handcar Derby is set to take place May 5-6 on the tracks in front of Broadstone Marketplace on E. Bidwell Street.

To participate in the event, groups for the handcar race must consist of five people — one pusher and four pumpers. Groups for the quadripede race must consist of two people.

Saturday, May 5, is orientation day. Participants will have the opportunity to practice and go over all the safety policies and procedures. All groups must complete a full racing pass by the end of the day to be able to compete on Sunday, May 6, said Dan Bocinski, event organizer.

On Sunday, the day starts at 9 a.m. with the pusher’s contest where anyone wanting to push the 850-pound handcar for distance is welcome to compete. Competitors are separated by various weight classes in each of the men’s and women’s categories.

Competition picks up immediately after with the handcar races as each team has one shot to be the best in their division and set the fastest time.

For the handcar races, teams will be able to enter different divisions including men, women, co-ed and masters, Bocinski said.

The final event is two contestants piloting the world’s only racing quadripede down the 800-foot track course.

Bocinski said this is the only place people will see this event on the west coast as far as the length of the track.

Bocinski said all races are timed electronically down to the one-hundredth of a second. He said this can make a huge difference between winning and losing in the respective categories.

The day ends with an awards ceremony for all of the competing divisions. The first, second and third-place winners will receive medals.

Bocinski is not just behind the scenes of this event, he also participates.

“From a racer’s perspective, this event has been very successful in the past,” he said. “We have an average of around 20 handcar teams and 10-15 quadripede teams.

This fun day gets quite a bit of spectators.”

The event is free for spectators, who can watch up on the hill or close by the tracks.

Outdoor music a plenty in the region

The warm summer nights are just around the corner and that means outdoor concert season is upon us once again The Folsom region offers a wide variety of concert venues on various nights of the week in the months ahead as four different outdoor stages within 10 minutes of Folsom have announced their 2018 schedules. All of these venues offer great talent and amenities. Best of all, they are all free of charge and provide a great outing with family and friends.

So gather the little ones, grab the lawn chairs, pack the ice chests and plan to head out to one of these many local venues to enjoy an evening of live music and socializing at sundown, three different nights of the week.

Historic Folsom Station Thursday Night Concerts Folsom’s Historic District enters its year of live concerts in the amphitheater located behind the Chamber of Commerce at 200 Wool St. The tiered spectator area of this venue offers wide rows for lawn chair seating and a raised stage for excellent viewing of the well lit stage. Concerts will begin a bit later this year at 7:30 p.m. each Thursday night and conclude at 9:15 p.m. to give everyone plenty of time to stroll the streets of the historic district.

Located near the Folsom Zoo and Library at 403 Stafford St., this venue offers plenty of room for a picnic with the family while enjoying the music on the large open lawn. Palladio Summer Concerts Series The popular Palladio at Broadstone will being its summer concert series and it’s sure to heat up. Upcoming events include the Wonderbread 5 on June 6 followed by the Pop Rocks on June 13. June 20 brings a tribute to the late Prince with When Doves Cry performing. Live on the Boulevard at Town Center in El Dorado Hills El Dorado Hills Town Center presents their very popular Live on the Boulevard concerts every Thursday evening. This year, the Thursday night series consists of 13 different events, opening on June 14 and runs through Sept. 13. Although the management of Town Center will not officially release until Mother’s Day, after press time for the Telegraph’s Let’s Go guide, they did share that there will be a number of returning favorites such as Petty Theft, the Folsom Lake Symphony, and more.

The venue provides plenty of room for dancing in front or of stage. Concerts take place from 7 until 9 each Thursday night. The amphitheater opens at 5:30 p.m. for concert viewers.

This year, Bike Month takes on a whole new level in Folsom as the Amgen Tour of California returns after a one-year hiatus. This year makes the 13th edition of America’s premier cycling stage race and will kick off on May 13 in Long Beach, making its way to Folsom on May 18 and ending in Sacramento on May 19.

“I think it reveals what a great host city Folsom has been over the years for the largest continental cycling event,” said Erin Gorrell, co-owner of Folsom Bike. “It allows us to demonstrate worldwide the enthusiasm this community has for cycling in general as well as the remarkable landscape and terrain in our area that is so conducive to epic cycling adventures.”

Throughout seven stages over seven days, the world’s best cyclists will contest more than 600 miles of roadways, highways and coastlines. The 2018 edition will mark the third time in race history that the peloton will travel the Golden State from south to north.

Stage 6 will bring the tour to Folsom on Friday, May 18, where it will use part of Folsom’s new Johnny Cash Trail, and the world’s top riders will roll out en route to Lake Tahoe.

The day will begin with a breakfast at 8 a.m. at Rodeo Park, and will give the community an exclusive opportunity to see many of the professional riders. The race itself will begin with a “Neutral Roll-out” at 9:45 a.m. and will be led by racers who have won various categories up until Stage 6.

Once the departure begins, the riders will make their way down the Johnny Cash Trail, over the new Robber’s Ravine Bridge and under Prison Road. When they reach E. Natoma, they will turn right and then make a left onto Green Valley Road, which is where the official zero kilometer start point is.

Following Green Valley Road, Stage 6 will take riders through Placerville to Pleasant Valley Road, Sly Park Road and onto Mormon Emigrant Trail, leading the cyclists through Tragedy Springs and Kirkwood. After, the route takes the contestants through Hope Valley to Sheridan, and as they cross into Nevada, they will finish with a categorized one climb at Daggett, finishing in South Lake Tahoe.

The overall race winner will likely be determined by this stage and the final miles into South Lake Tahoe.

For those interested in participating in the morning breakfast party at Rodeo Park, Stafford Street will be closed to vehicles. Limited parking will be available. Goss said everyone is encouraged to ride their bike to the event, as there will be bike parking available. According to the Folsom Municipal Landscape Services Division, there will be multiple observation spots for those who do not plan to attend the breakfast party.

Join the community on the Great Scott Ride If you’re looking for a really unique group ride, Bike Month kicks off with two very special events in Folsom. The Great Scott Bike and Walk offers an opportunity where you can enjoy a day of riding with family and friends in a long Folsom tradition. Many city leaders take part in this grand affair that is free to the public and enjoyed by all ages and levels of riders.

The Great Scott Bike and Walk event takes riders on 30 miles of country roads on the south side of Folsom that will be closed to traffic from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. May 6. The road closure and a speed limit makes this event fun for the entire family. Cyclists can choose the distance they want to ride within the 30 mile stretch of Scott Road. Ride with the Mayor

Do it in the dirt The Granite Bay trail is one of the area’s most popular rides for all ages. Located on the north shore of the lake, the Granite Bay Trail is a great place for beginning riders and families to enjoy single-track riding that isn’t too daunting.

The Brown’s Ravine Trail off Dike 8 is 3.5-mile single-track ride great for even the novice cyclist. It begins at Folsom Point and goes across the Morman Island auxiliary dam, also known as Dike 8. Once you cross the dam you will enjoy rolling single-track trails for three to four miles into Brown’s Ravine.

Skunk Hollow Trail satisfies those looking for a more challenging off-road ride — a fun ride that goes through some local nearby history. The trailhead for this route can be found just across the street from the Salmon Falls recreation parking area and leads to an open valley where several turn-of-the-century ranch buildings are still standing.

The Salmon Falls ride is a must for the avid enthusiast. Also known as the Darrington Trail, this ride is well known in the area. It is 16 miles round trip, and while the trail shares real estate with hikers and horses, it is mostly populated by cyclists.

Prairie City Race Series is a way to get off the beaten path and do it in a competitive way. This takes place at the Prairie City OHV Park each Wednesday evening through June 14. It’s one of Northern California’s largest mountain bike race series events and is open to pro, expert, sport and beginning riders of all ages. On Thursday, May 11, join Mayor Steve Miklos on the 11th annual Folsom Ride with the Mayor event. This longtime traditional ride starts in Historic Folsom near Mike’s Bikes, where riders enjoy beverages and snacks from Karen’s Bakery and departs at 8:30 a.m. for a 30-mile route to Discovery Park in Sacramento. Once at their destination, riders enjoy a complimentary lunch provided by the May is Bike Month organizers.

After being re-elected as mayor this year, Miklos is ready for the journey this year, fresh off recovering from knee surgery himself, his participation clearly illustrates this ride is open to anyone of any level.

“This is a fun ride with plenty of professional riders to keep the pace below the bike trail speed limit so all can enjoy the scenery along the way and not get lost,” said Miklos. “Please come out and enjoy what we have in nature’s backyard; get in some good exercise and meet and network with fellow riders.

Light rail tickets will be provided for those who wish not to make the ride back to Folsom and don’t otherwise have transportation back.

The City of Folsom offers hundreds of miles of options between bike friendly roads and trails. In the city alone, over 30 miles of trail are designated class I bike paths. In addition to the class I routes, more than 67 miles of local riding territory consists of quality class II bike paths that share the road with rider and motorists to share the space throughout the city.

When you add in another 30 miles or more of paved trails, known as the American River Bike Trail, it becomes pretty obvious that Folsom much road cycling.

Registration now open for September event

The annual L’Etape California by Le Tour de France, a mass participation bike ride produced by the operators of the Amgen Tour of California, AEG, and A.S.O., owner and operator of the Tour de France will take place in Folsom Sept. 2.

Open to the public and road riders of all skill levels, registration is now open for this Folsom-first holiday weekend event which begins on Saturday, Sept. 1 — a day filled with French food, sights, appearances from cycling legends and family cycling fun — followed by the L’Etape ride on Sunday, Sept. 2.

Sept. 1 will be a cycling-filled day before the ride. Participants will be able to walk through the Cycling and Active Lifestyle Expo to experience family-friendly activities and vendor booths. Attendees can visit the traveling Tour de France Museum to see race visuals through a virtual reality experience and ask questions to a Tour de France legend in a public Q and A session. Other offerings include French food, a look into French culture and a Tour de France stage or movie screening.

During the ride on Sept. 2, awards such as King and Queen of the Mountain and Classics awards will be presented for the best overall climbing times. All finishers of the fully supported ride will receive a participation medal, post-ride meal and entertainment, photos and more. Similar to last year when the event took place in Mt. Baldy, winners of the climbing competition will be eligible to earn a trip to France to represent California and show L’Etape California their skills at the original Etape du Tour ride in When: Sept. 1 and 2 summer 2019.

L’Etape California by Le Tour de France is a ride designed to challenge cyclists on a course comparable to an Alps mountain stage of the world’s most well-known cycling race. The second annual L’Etape California by Le Tour de France will take riders on a scenic hilly ride through the Sierra foothills in a region known for warm summer weather and sunshine.

Experience excitement and mystery at the new Escape Folsom down in the Folsom Historic District. The second you walk in to Escape Folsom, you are instantly overwhelmed with a sense of nostalgia and excitement.

This one-of-a-kind business is more than just a room full of puzzles. At Escape Folsom, guests can experience specifically designed rooms that mirror pieces of Folsom history, as well as get a bite to eat and drink.

“You don’t have to come to the escape room to experience the bar and restaurant component,” said co-owner Jim Carey. “The restaurant and bar area adds to the experience. You can get a meal and drink before or after you go into the escape room, or you can do both separately.”

The one-hour escape room experience offers guests the chance to Escape the Prison or Escape Yager’s Tap House — both historic Folsom icons.

“Our games are unlike games in other escape rooms. People who have done 30 games walk into ours and they can’t figure it out because we’re not conventional,” said co-owner Jim Corbett. “We designed the room and made it look completely realistic, and then we designed the puzzles to go Escape Folsom into the room. Everyone has fun.”

When he came out of the escape room, he knew the perfect building to house his very own — the old Yager’s building.

“It’s great to see the vision we came up with two years ago is now a reality and everyone loves it,” Corbett said.

Carey said while escape rooms are gaining traction all around the country, they wanted to be different, and that’s exactly what they did.

The restaurant and bar area is unique, all the way down to the furniture. Everything was built by the three friends, and even some of the pieces such as the tables, chair cushions and wood planks were repurposed from what was left in the Yager’s building.

“We wanted to provide a different type of environment than what was already on Sutter Street,” Carey said. “Taking the old building and transforming it, but keeping a lot of the attributes of the old building was important to us. You can see the bricks and the rock walls, and you can’t duplicate that. We didn’t want to affect those kinds of things.”

The menu, created by Chef Paul Mueller, was designed for sharing and community, just like the entire business.

“From community tables to community games, everything that we tried to create is about community and our menu also reflects that,” Corbett said. “With the sliders to the flatbreads, everything comes in portions to share, and that’s what we’re looking for — to bring people together, meet new people and enjoy the atmosphere.”

While Escape Folsom recently opened on Feb. 16, there are already popular items on the menu. Some of these items include the pastrami pretzel sliders, bagel bites, bacon and spinach dip, Brussels sprouts hash, loaded French fries and gourmet corndogs. Escape Folsom is family-friendly and also has a kid’s menu.

When asked what their favorite part about their new business is, Carey and Corbett both said seeing their guests’ excitement.

“I love seeing the excitement of the people who have come in and knew Yager’s before and can see the transformations,” Carey said.

“Also, I love seeing their excitement when they experience a room.

Their happiness and excitement is why we did this. We wanted to create something where people could have a great time.”

Other than having the rooms open to individual guests, Escape Folsom also caters to the corporate client.

“Anyone who wants to do a team-building event can come in and experience two rooms at a time. After, they can experience great food and have a place to have some drinks in the same location,” Carey said. “We can rope off the lounge and have a private party area. We also cater to birthday parties, bridal showers and any celebration.”

Kathy Lynn, of El Dorado Hills, went kayaking for the first time and wasn’t sure of what she was about to experience.

“Kayaking was always something I wanted to do,” she said. “I live so close to the facility and I thought it would be relaxing and fun. The only thing I was concerned about was getting into the kayak without it tipping over.”

Lynn is excited to do it again because she had a very enjoyable experience, she said.

“It was very relaxing and there weren’t a lot of people out on the lake the day I went,” Lynn said. “I am so happy I finally had the chance to get out there and do it!”

If you are looking for a relaxing day on the lake, but don’t have a boat, kayaking might be perfect for you.

At the reasonable price of $11 for non-Sacramento State University students and $8 for students, smoothly paddling through the water is a perfect weekend activity.

First when arriving at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center, you check in at the front counter and rent the kayak, said Brian Dulgar, the director the facility. Next, you fit yourself with a properly sized life jacket. Sizes range from toddler all the way to XXL, he said. Then, you grab a paddle, get in your kayak by the water and paddle away.

“Kayaking is for everyone,” Dulgar said. “I have two daughters and they grew up here. They were exposed to water starting at 18 months old. We encourage all ages to try it and have the ability to become comfortable around and in the water.”

When kayaking on a day with a nice temperature, it can be an escape from life and an relaxing experience, he said.

One perk about Lake Natoma is that there usually not any boats and it is a good lake to learn on, he said. It really takes the fear out of it, Dulgar said.

If you are looking for different ways to strengthen muscles while having a good time, kayaking really works out your arms, back and shoulders, he said. While it doesn’t work much of your abs naturally, there are other things to intensify kayaking to work your core.

“Kayaking is the most popular activity we have, because it is easy to do,” Dulgar said. “People come in and say, ‘What is the easiest thing you have?’ Other than stand-up paddling, it is hands down the easiest.”

Flat water kayaking and whitewater kayaking are very different. With flat water kayaking, it is very smooth, relaxing and easy going. With Whitewater kayaking, you have to read the water and pick the flow, he said. You have to worry about rapids and be more aware of your surroundings, Dulgar said.

If you are new to kayaking, or have not taken the proper training, whitewater kayaking is not encouraged.

During summer, it can get pretty crowded, but the CSUS Aquatic Center figured out a way to make it a quick and easy check in.

“We increased the amount of terminals to check in,” he said. People who have an existing account can fast-track to rent equipment and new members can sign up at one of the kiosks. It makes the process a lot faster.”

If you are looking for some adventure this summer, whitewater rafting may be the thrill you having missing from your life.

The Auburn Foothills is home to some of the best whitewater rafting on the planet and we are so lucky to have such a pristine river in our area to do thrilling outdoor experiences on.

Basically what you do is you make an appointment with a rafting company, go to the river, put on the provided helmet and life jacket, learn safety precautions from your rafting guide, get in the raft, and go down the river at 2,000 cubic-feet per second.

“It is a fantastic way to enjoy nature, see the river and add a splash of fun to your life,” said Deric Rothe, the owner and head guide at Sierra Whitewater Rafting. “It’s family friendly and people from the age of 8 to 75 go rafting.”

For those, like me, or are scared of whitewater rafting and think it is dangerous, it actually isn’t.

About 75,000 people went rafting last summer and deaths are very rare. Rafting is safer than driving on the freeway, Rothe said.

“Sometimes people fall out, and they take a swim, but we always get them back in the boat,” he said.

One thing to remember if you plan on rafting is to wear sunscreen. It is encouraged to wear sunglasses, a hat, shorts and a tank top, shoes you don’t mind getting wet, a smile and enthusiasm, Rothe said.

“Whitewater rafting will be the highlight of your summer,” Rothe said.

Nestled in a quaint valley deep in heart of Amador County is the little sleepy town of Ione.

After Labor Day, there’s an area in the foothills that begins bustling with activity. It’s known as Apple Hill, stretching from the upper region of Placerville and into Camino. Now with Autumn in full swing, it is the perfect time of year to load the family up and head to country that is right in Folsom’s backyard for all sorts of fun, wholesome activity along with great eats and treats.

“Apple Hill farms have been a great day trip for people for more than 50 years,” said Robyn Delfino, marketing chairperson of the Apple Hill Growers Association, whose family has been ranching in the area for decades. “People keep coming back.”

Annually, it is estimated that more than a million people made a visit to Apple Hill for the season runs from Labor Day weekend until the December. While the area draws its share of locals, it draws a large amount of visitors from the far reaches of California, including the Bay Area. It’s this large attraction that not only benefits the many farms and surrounding businesses in nearby El Dorado County, but also makes a dent in the form of tourism into Folsom.

“We are very fortunate in Folsom to have our neighboring communities offering amenities that are so different and complimentary to what we have here,” said Mary Ann McAlea, senior vice president of the Folsom Chamber of Commerce. “Apple Hill has become an annual tradition for many people from the Greater Bay Area and we are proud for the opportunity to showcase our region. We encourage visitors to enjoy the wonderful experiences available at the orchards and wineries of El Dorado County. And, of course, a visit to Folsom will make it a perfect day.”

The numbers tell the tale that Apple Hill is clearly one of the region’s most significant tourist destinations. The area is known for its rural ambiance and tasty products that extend well beyond that of just apples. This consists of 55 member ranches that include the largest concentration of apple growers in California of 25 farms featuring 16 different varieties of Apples and various other fruits. It’s not all just fruit when you visit, its 13 different bake shops packed with tasty homemade pies, caramel apples, dumplings and more. The area is home to ten different wineries, 14 Christmas tree farms, a day spa and more than 50 different special events during the season.

As you travel up Carson Road just out of Placerville, one of the many different farms you will see early on your trip will be Abel’s Apple Acres. Evelyn Abel has been selling apples and treats from her roadside ranch near her home since 1976. She began selling apples straight out of the box alongside the road in the early years. Now, four generations of

family continue the tradition right alongside her at the place where many travel from afar for her famous buttermilk apple pie.

“It seems like yesterday when we first started really,” Abel said. “I look forward to it every year. It’s great to see all of the families come out and get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The kids love it no matter where they travel from. It’s good wholesome fun and we need that these days.”

Apple Hill traditionally opens on Labor Day weekend. The area is bustling with activity up until the Christmas holiday. October is one of the greatest times of the year to visit the area as the fall colors are abundant, the air is cool and crisp and there are pumpkin patches, craft vendors, petting barns and fun activities for the kiddos everywhere you look. When Thanksgiving hits, the Christmas tree farms open their gates and the area is ready to provide you with a fresh holiday tree, complete with the thrill of cutting it yourself fresh in the woods.

“When we hit the busy time of the season we have as many as 50 employees working,” said Abel’s son Kevin Ames, who works at the ranch along with every other family member. “If you’re a member of this family, you work here during the season. It’s pretty simple and we all love it. One of the best times of the year to come up here is in October when fall is in full swing.: In addition to the great eats and the ingredients to make your own special treats, the Apple Hill Farms have many great products beyond the apple alone. The association has its very own cookbook that can be purchased at various locations. Many of the member farms host craft vendors and special events for the whole family to enjoy.

From Johnny Appleseed Day celebrations to fishing, pony rides, hay rides and amazing mazes, no youngster or young at heart will find themselves board in this form of nature’s playground.

So how does one plan a trip to the Apple Hill Farms? To each their own as everyone has their own desires and styles. One of the most traditional ways to tour the area is through the official Apple Hill map that details all of the member farms in the area.

“Part of the fun of Apple Hill farms is searching out the farms and finding your favorite,” said Delfino. “They’ve all got a lot of tourist attraction.”

Located in the Historic District of Folsom, The Folsom History Museum is home to a collection of artifacts and treasures that are very valuable to Folsom’s history. The historic museum offers educational exhibits throughout the year which focuses on Folsom’s native settlers, the discovery of gold and the formation of mining camps, ethnic groups who contributed to the Folsom area, the formation of the town, railroad, prison, powerhouse and later efforts at gold mining. The Folsom Powerhouse is part of a colorful chapter of Sacramento history and is also an example of the tremendous advance in the commercial application of electricity. In 1895, the Folsom Powerhouse successfully transmitted electricity 22 miles to a power substation in Sacramento. The powerhouse was the nation’s first power plant to provide high-voltage current over long distance lines for major city and industrial use. Today, the Folsom Powerhouse is the only nearly intact 19th-century hydroelectric plant open to the public. Folsom Railroad Museum The Folsom Railroad Museum is located in Historic Folsom and is a great place to visit if you are interested in learning about how the railroad helped created the California we know today. At this museum you will learn about the first railroad west of the Rockies and who built it. This railroad stretches all the way to Sacramento and has been here since 1856. The museum is open on weekends from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is located at 198 Wool St. For more information, go to fedshra. org.

River rafting Being one of the most popular destinations in California to go whitewater rafting, we are lucky to have the American River right here in our area. The South Fork is a Class III as far as rapids goes. The Middle Fork and the North Fork are a Class IV. All three rivers also feature some Class II sections which is perfect for family float trips or anyone looking for relaxation without the adrenaline factor. IT_girls 2 June 18-29 9:00am-12:00pm Grades 9-12 This camp is a programming/engineering camp that is designed to enhance understanding of Python as a programming language.

Topics include input/output considerations, decision structures/ flow control, functions, file processing, data structures, and an introduction to objects. Prerequisite - students must have one of the following: IT_girls 1 certificate, WCC camp certificate, or basic knowledge of Python programming.
