Wine, food, song — and beer — will be highlighted at the 2018 Lincoln Wine Festival.

This year’s Wine Festival will include two additions: beer tasting and live music.

2018 LINCOLN WINE FESTIVAL

In addition to 17 wineries, the event will feature four local brewers. Placer County breweries participating in the 2018 Lincoln Wine Fest are Goathouse Brewery, Auburn Alehouse, Crooked Lane and Knee Deep. The craft brewers will all be located at Freedom Rides, located at 643 Lincoln Blvd.

Event organizers expect approximately 900 attendees to partake in wine-tasting within a four-block radius of downtown Lincoln.

Joann Hilton, a Lincoln Rotary Club member and the wine fest organizer for six of its seven years, said the event is “a labor of love.”

“It’s very rewarding,” Hilton said. “We get wonderful feedback from (downtown) retailers and vintners. There is a great ambiance and feel downtown.” Hilton said the Lincoln Rotary Club has two main objectives for the wine fest and that the event is not a fundraiser for the group. “Our No. 1 objective is to bring visitors to downtown Lincoln, see our lovely downtown and shop,” Hilton said. “Our second objective is to establish and link

downtown Lincoln with Placer County wineries; we want to be the gateway to Placer County wineries.” “This is part of our community service function; it’s not a fundraiser,” Hilton added. “We don’t want to lose money on it but it’s not our main objective.”

Jim D’Ambrosio, owner of Lincoln Gold and Coin in downtown Lincoln, said he loves the event and looks forward to it every year. “I’ve been in one kind of business or other for 45 years and I don’t know of any more successful event,” D’Ambrosio said. “This is the best event for the downtown business community. We sell a good amount of merchandise that day.” “People come in, look around and so many people come back,” D’Ambrosio added. “I can’t say enough about the Lincoln Wine Festival.”

In addition to tasting many great Placer County wine, Lincoln Wine Fest visitors have an opportunity to buy bottles of wine at a discount. These women picked up a 12-pack of wine.

Live musical entertainment is planned but had not been finalized, as of press time.

Hilton said the Lincoln Rotary Club has partnered with the Downtown Lincoln Association, the Lincoln Area Chamber of Commerce, the Placer County Vintners’ Association and the local wineries and food providers to put on the event. The festival is “a huge team effort,” Hilton said, and last year’s event had 82 volunteers from the Lincoln Rotary Club, Beale Air Force Base and the local community.

Participating wineries this year, as of press time, include Bear River Winery, Bonitata Boutique Wines, Cante Ao Vinho, Casque Wines, Ciotti Cellars, Cristaldi Vineyards, Davis Dean Cellars, Dono Dal Cielo Winery, Fawnridge Winery, Lone Buffalo Vineyards, Mount Saint Joseph Wines, PaZa Estate Winery, Pescatore Vineyards, Rancho Roble Vineyards, Rock Hill Winery, Secret Ravine Vineyards and Wise Villa Winery. Lincoln has a group that helps keep the vision of historical Lincoln alive with community events throughout the year.

“The Downtown Lincoln Association (DLA) is a nonprofit association dedicated to enhancing the business environment and the shopping experience to our visitors in the Downtown District,” Pam Lopez, Downtown Lincoln Association's vice president and Mr. Pickles owner, said. DLA members include downtown business owners, organizations, landowners, and individuals who have a passion for enhancing the downtown district. Businesses, organizations and individuals can become a member. Those who are interested in joining can find out more at downtownlincolnca.com/memberships. There are many benefits for members including networking with other businesses, marketing opportunities and events that bring people downtown, a voice in local government, and the chance to make a positive impact on the future of Downtown Lincoln. “The DLA benefits the community by striving to create the best downtown possible,” Lopez said.

The nonprofit provides free events to the community, provides scholarships to Lincoln High School graduating seniors and has contributed to the ongoing Art in Public Places campaign. One highlighted benefit is their continued work with the city on ideas to improve the Downtown experience.

The quote at the outset reflects Serena Olson, owner and chef of Culinary Comfort out of Lincoln, and reveals just the beginning of her story as a personal chef.

Olson was born and raised in California and grew up with her dad pulling various things out of the cupboards and making meals. She watched him cook and it became her creative outlet.

“Growing up we always cooked out of necessity,” Olson explained. “Out of necessity for cooking, came a passion for cooking.”

That passion drove her to obtain her bachelor’s degree in business management and from there, cooking became a personal chef business. Culinary Comfort was designed to allow couples, friends or families to have small dinner parties from two to 15 people. The menus are customized and based off the clients' needs. This allows the client to enjoy a meal to be prepped, cooked and cleaned up in the comfort of their home, while they can entertain guests or simply relax. “It makes for a great anniversary present, a dinner for two,” Olson said. “It is a nice treat when you don’t have to cook.”

Her business doesn’t end there though, she offers meal prep services, home cooking class parties and teaches homeschool children how to cook. Olson is an approved vendor for local charter schools, where part of the curriculum is to learn how to cook.

When it comes to home-cooking class parties, there are many options. With a minimum of four people, an afternoon of cooking demos can be enjoyed or eat food and simply have a good time. There is even an option for wine or beer pairings. One of Olson’s favorite items to create? Cheese boards. They are fun, and can have a variety of foods and just have fun with it, she said.

As the weather starts to warm up, food selections change, and Olson has the key to great ideas for the warmer seasons. From mocktails to grilling fresh fruit, she has the eye of delicious and healthy options. “I like to incorporate California flavors and Mediterranean, clean eating into my recipes,” she said. “I don’t use a lot of salt or sugar in my recipes, I try to get natural sugar and flavors.” ❖

Kracon gives aircrafts a new finish How much does it cost to paint an airplane?

The answer: Much, much more than a car. In fact, not only are airplanes in general pricey but a lot of expense is involved in painting them from the cost of paint to the specialized and technical labor.

Kracon Aircraft Inc. paints airplanes from the lower-priced $20,000 models up KRACON AIRCRAFT to some ranging in the tens WHERE of millions. It can be auto paint, but some planes specify aircraft paint that is designed to be more durable and tolerant to heat. For a two-passenger airplane, a paint job might cost about $14,000. Kracon has had some well-known customers such as the Patriots Jet Team, California Highway Patrol, Homeland Security, Cal Trans, as well as celebrity aerobatic pilot Julie Clark.

In the world of airplanes, Kracon is nationally known. Planes and helicopters are flown in from all over the country to get a shiny new coat. For instance, there is an Embraer jet, 14-passenger commuter plane costing roughly $13 million, Szkotak said, that flies around the country — to Chicago, Houston and Naples, Florida. However, while it was on the ground at Thunder Valley Casino, a storm pushed a dumpster into the wing. Parts to fix the damage cost $80,000. But, Szkotak said, the plane is losing $20,000 a day when it’s not working. Other planes Szkotak has recently specialized in painting is the Cirrus SR20 and SR22, a luxury in general aviation. “They are the iPhones of the sky,” he said. “The inside feels like a Lexus.”

body shop. So at 14, Szkotak got a job at the auto body shop. He started sweeping floors and worked his way up to painter and got certified. Later he worked at a body repair shop in Grass Valley. However, he didn’t enjoy painting cars because, he said, there are typically bad circumstances that bring people to the auto body shop. “There’s no reward in collision repair,” he added.

So, when he saw an ad for a painter at Kracon, he acted fast. “I saw the ad and sent my resume and immediately drove down,” Szkotak said. “I basically stuck around until they said OK.” Six years later, he has taken the reins of the company.

One change he has made to the 46-year-old business is attracting higher-end customers. Kracon used to only work on smaller planes in the $20,000 range, Szkotak said, but he has reached out to work on planes costing $800,000 and into the millions. “We’re trying to cater to these high-end people,” he said.

Szkotak estimates there’s only about 50 aircraft paint shops in the nation and attributes part of the success of his company to “advertising a lot.” Szkotak is not yet a pilot himself but, through trade with a flight instructor, he will start lessons soon. The benefits of getting his license, he said, could be to fly to customers for estimates and fly his wife and two kids to Disneyland. The Szkotak family lives in Grass Valley, but has a fondness for Lincoln. “I really like the community,” he said, “It’s a great community.” Top: A few finished projects by Kracon. Fresh veggies and fruit. The whiff of hot kettle corn. Live music and ambient hustle and bustle. All things to expect in your neighborhood farmers’ market in warmer seasons. But what about the winter or early spring? Is it slim pickins’ due to seasonal closures of many markets? Not so with these year-round markets. WHAT TO EXPECT

You could easily turn a trip to the farmers’ market a date for brunch, followed by stocking up for a multiple-course meal at home. The variety of produce changes with the season, so check the PlacerGROWN website at placergrown.org to see what’s available. For early March, you can expect to find: Fruit: apples, lemons, limes, mandarins, persimmons, pomegranates and oranges.

Vegetables: beets, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cucumbers, kohlrabi, leeks, mushrooms, onions, potatoes, pumpkins, radishes, snap peas, turnips and squash. Salad greens and herbs: arugula, Asian greens (bok choy, tat soi), collard greens, garlic, kale, lettuce, oregano, rosemary, scallions, spinach, sprouts, swiss chard, watercress, wheatgrass.

Regardless of the season eggs, honey, meats and coffee are available from various vendors. You’ll also find a number of prepared foods you can snack on while at the market, such as vegan pestos from Township Valley Farm, sprouted hummus from Zena Foods, single-serving treats from Andolin’s Pies, garlic spreads from Garlish, bottled kombucha from Nash’s, pastries from the Baker and the Cakemaker, and chocolate chip cookies from Foresthill Cookies using Benjamin Franklin’s original recipe (at least that’s what the folks at Foresthill Cookies said.)

Another way to find things is by using the menu. Click on Local Farmers in the top menu, and see a page where you can filter by name or product. If you check off a product and click the Filter button, you’ll then see a list of farmers and vendors that sell who product, along

with contact information such as email, phone number or website. You’ll also see keywords next to each listed vendor. If you click on a keyword, you can see a list of vendors and recipes related to that keyword, which can be handy for finding culinary inspiration for what’s in season.
