Camellia Cup A long tradition on the blue waters of Folsom Lake

I

t’s a tradition that has weathered more than 50 decades, survived a number of drought years and continues to be an event of grand stature on the waters of Folsom Lake. It’s the annual Camellia Cup regatta and it is ready to set sail April 14 and 15.

Celebrating its 52nd year, the Camellia Cup marks the official start of boating season in the Sacramento Valley.

Hosted by the Folsom Lake Yacht Club, the event is unique in the way of regattas.

Not only do sailors compete in various classes of boats, but they go head to head for the coveted Camellia Cup Championship title as well as the honor of being Sacramento Valley’s best sailor.

The two-day affair traditionally consists of five total races, with three events slated for Saturday and two on Sunday.

Competitors will set sail from Browns Ravine Marina, which is on the east side of Folsom Lake.

Before the events begin. Sailors check in for the event as early as 5 a.m. on sailing day and there is a routine skip-

pers meeting at 9 a.m. prior to the official start of the event at 10:30 a.m. The start of the race and throughout the day, plenty of viewing and photo opportunities become available as Folsom’s blue waters become decorated with a fleet of vessels that are visible from the shores of Folsom and Granite Bay throughout the afternoon.

Last year, “sailor’s log” was given new meaning at the event, when 46 sailboats evaded logs and driftwood to compete in the event after rising waters had brought Folsom Lake to near capacity, and plenty of obstacles along with the pleasant perk. Craig Lee, 63, of El Dorado Hills,

won the top honors as the regatta’s best overall sailor.

Sailing his 13-foot-long Banshee, Inn-Out, the El Dorado Hills resident finished first place twice and second place twice in four qualifying races to win the 11-boat Banshee fleet and Open Centerboard class.

This was Lee’s second Camellia Cup championship and his third Open Centerboard class perpetual trophy win.

Kerry Johnson, of El Dorado Hills, finished third behind Lee in the Banshee category. Jack Tatum, of El Dorado Hills, finished sixth in the same category.

Historically, as many as 350 vessels of participated in the Camellia Cup. The oldest sailor to win the event was 86 years old in 2013. The youngest winner was 17 in 2008.

California’s springtime color explosion isn’t terribly hard to access. A wildflower admirer need not go off the beaten path to scope out the state’s Day-Glo poppies and mustard flowers, visible from the passenger seat along highways and at intersections.

But those willing to make a 90-minute drive up to Oroville can catch patches of color in a much more wild setting at Table Mountain Ecological Reserve, which spans 3,300 acres.

The nature preserve lies west of Lake Oroville and about seven miles north of the city itself.

This time of year, when wildflowers are in bloom, portable restrooms are available near parking, but facilities are otherwise unavailable at the site, including running water and trash receptacles.

Visitors are required to have a California Department of Fish and Wildlife Lands Pass on them if they’re 16 years or older. The passes aren’t available on-site but can be purchased online, by calling 1-800-565-1458 or in-person wherever fishing or hunting licenses are sold. Rangers typically aren’t out and about checking for permits, but when the Granite Bay View visits the area with Sacramento ecologist Seth Kaupo in early March, a CDFW employee checks for lands passes near the parking lot. The employee instructs visitors to continue straight for about a mile, keeping to the right of a patch of oak trees.

Working on a doctorate from the University of California at Berkeley, Kaupo specializes in tropical ecology. He’s worked in rainforests throughout South America and doesn’t have the constant urge to identify every

living thing like some more specialized scientists have. But having grown up in San Diego, he’s well versed in California flora all the same.

Kaupo begins the hike across Table Mountain with what he calls “the botany shuffle.” Not more than 75 feet away from the parking lot, he’s engrossed in a patch of yellow about two inches from the ground. He stops to look at the petals and pistils, stems and stamens, kneeling on damp ground, unafraid to dirty his clothes in the name of identification.

Just in that first patch of flowers, Kaupo finds at least half a dozen species, from purple lupins to orange poppies. A small, sunshine-colored flower becomes larger than life under his hand-lens, as he looks up its name: blennosperma nanum, or yellow carpet. Another apt title.

“That’s the cool thing about plants,” Kaupo says. “The closer you look, the more you see.”

The flowers continue to vary as the path winds on and the sound of bubbling water grows louder. Table Mountain is home

to a handful of waterfalls — at least in winter, when rainfall can collect in the cracks of rock.

This water collection also opens up the mesa to a special type of habitat: the northern basalt flow vernal pool. The name’s a mouthful, but the habitat is home to an ephemeral group of species adapted to that specific environment.

When the pools dry up in hotter months, their tenants go away.

Specialized plants aren’t the only thing living atop Table Mountain, though. Cows also graze, helping maintain the wildflower-laden environment. The Department of Fish and Wildlife’s website warns visitors against approaching cattle, though, and while dogs are allowed in the reserve, they must be on leashes.

Besides potentially charging at visitors, the cattle present a few extra hazards.

Hikers should watch out for cow pies and barbed-wire fences that are designed to corral the livestock. The trails are also minimal. On one occasion, the lack of clarity causes Kaupo to wonder wheth-

er they’re cow paths or people paths. On more than one occasion, he laments that the paths aren’t more clear, so people have a place to walk and aren’t ambling through the flowers. Without clear paths, hikers can easily become lost if they’re not paying attention.

Fortunately, the rolling landscape provides a lot to pay attention to. The Coast Ranges are visible far to the west and dramatic. But the foreground is more exciting. Between grasses, lava patches and swaths of bright flowers, it looks like someone kicked over buckets of paint and let them flow over the rolling hills.

Add in the waterfalls, one of which is dozens of feet high, requiring careful trek-

king near its top, and Table Mountain is downright majestic. Imagine the stark but richly colored landscapes of Ireland, but right here in northern California.

But all that’s just the macro. One could argue the micro level is even more spectacular, hand lens and science background or not. All it takes is a willingness to do Kaupo’s botany shuffle and visitors can be treated to a whole different world between March and May: one of wildflowers, immense detail and no shortage of small wonders.

coot over, Federer. There’s another Roger in tennis. Though not on the court as much as he was in his high school and college days, Granite Bay resident Roger Crawford takes up the racket from time to time, like at Serena Williams’ charity tournament in Palm Springs last month.

Mainly, though, Crawford still lives and breathes the philosophical side of tennis.

Any given day, he could be blogging, chatting with clients, working on his fourth book, preparing presentations or on a plane to his next speaking engagement.

In the 30 years he’s been a motivational speaker, Crawford has appeared before 4,000 audiences worldwide, according to his website. He’s also been featured on national television like “Good Morning America,” “Monday Night Football” and “The Today Show.”

Crawford, who started playing tennis at age 12, stepped to the stage after college, when he took unpaid speaking requests here and there.

“Before I knew it, it turned into a career,” he said.

His main messages? Developing a winning mindset and doing your best despite circumstances. Crawford knows a thing or two about defying circumstances. Born with physical impairments on all four of his limbs, he still rose to the top, becoming an NCAA Division I Hall of Fame athlete.

“If you believe something’s impossible, you’ll find a way to prove yourself right,” he said.

Since February, he’s been sharing his success story and the lessons behind it internationally each week. About a year ago, Crawford said, he interviewed athletes for The Tennis Channel, which then

approached him about doing a segment called “Motivational Mondays.”

The segments are about a minute and a half long and play each Monday. Adding to his busy schedule, Crawford travels to Los Angeles to record the segments, doing as many as 20 in a day, which equates to about 13 hours of filming.

Since Crawford is used to speaking solo on a stage in front of thousands, the television segments are a different animal, with an invisible audience and a teleprompter.

But, as with anything, Crawford has embraced the growth that comes with venturing beyond his comfort zone.

“The most time-intensive part is writing it,” Crawford said. “To take something and make it have meaning in 200 words ... every word has to have weight. Plus making it conversational and relevant to audiences outside tennis.”

For every speech he gives, whether it’s 90 minutes or a minute-and-a-half, Crawford said the most important aspect is what the audience gets out of it. While travel perks and standing ovations are pluses, Crawford derives value from his career by meeting people where they are and impacting them as individuals.

“What I say is not as important as what they hear,” he said. “What they hear is what they’re going to remember.”

For Crawford and his wife Kathryn, athletics amplify philosophies that may not be so easily found in other aspects of life. While physical strength and dexterity is necessary to succeed in most sports, mental prowess is equally, if not more, important. While having confidence and a positive attitude is important in many areas of life, it’s more evident in sports because the opponent is across the court and the scoreboard is right there.

That mental prowess — and the resulting peak performance — comes from things that crop up over and over in Crawford’s conversation: Balance. Resilience.

Mindfulness. Grit.

“There’s an old saying: ‘In times like these, remember there have been times like these,’” Crawford said.

On handling negativity, especially in the current state of affairs, Crawford of-

fered some sage advice away from the stage and the screen: Focus on the good, on the controllable, and let go of the rest.

“We can choose to get completely flipped out, but what can we influence?” he said. “We can be kind to people. We can show positivity. We can hug our kids, love our families, be good neighbors ... We can be overwhelmed by negativity, but the good far outweighs the negative.”

continued from page 22 But the Marks were still smitten. The residence was much larger than the one they left in the Bay Area, both inside and out. The home is on a one-acre lot with large trees — which sold Lynn — and an element of privacy, which her husband liked. The nearby school district was a plus, as well as having Folsom Lake just over the hill.

Despite living in California for most of her adult life, Marks says she’s still a Jersey girl at heart, having moved from the East Coast after college. In fact, Lakeridge reminds her of New Jersey in a way —

namely, the lush grasses and lack of sidewalks or streetlamps.

Today, like much of the area, it’s a little less rural than when Marks and her husband signed the deed. But the old architecture has stuck around, mixed in with homes that are vastly different from the next. One house is dome shaped, another circular. One home looks like a cabin, while another down the street is all stainless steel and angles.

As one might imagine, Lakeridge has no homeowner’s association or dues, according to Marks’ neighbor Barb Mayers.

The community, as Mayers describes it, is private but friendly. People tend to keep to themselves but form close relationships with neighbors.

The Lakeridge neighborhood, around since the late 1950s, has experienced some add-ons over the years, according to longtime resident Lynn Marks. The newer portions of the subdivision are marked by curbs and more homogenous architecture.

While many homes in Granite Bay’s Lakeridge neighborhood look like relics from the past — houses were constructed as early as 1959, according to a local Realtor — some homes like this one add a modern edge to the place. .

Like Marks, Mayers has lived in Lakeridge since the ‘80s, and the two families had children around the same age who grew up together. Now the two neighbors share life events as their children start families of their own. The kids remain close to this day; Marks’ daughter even officiated the wedding when Mayers’ son got married.

“This has been a great house to raise kids in,” Marks said, recalling trips to nearby Folsom Lake and walks along the bike trail with her children.

While proximity to the lake is a major plus — houses on the “ridge” of Lakeridge have a spectacular, high-up view —

Mayers said residents are also avid runners, bikers, walkers and gardeners.

Careers of residents are just as varied as their hobbies. According to Mayers, while many neighbors are retired, they were nurses, teachers, firemen, construction workers, attorneys — and those are just the neighbors Marks knows.

As the neighborhood continues to change with the area’s population growth, Mayers said she’s become wary of the light and noise pollution that wasn’t there three decades ago. She’s also felt the effects of traffic piling up on nearby Douglas Boulevard, doubling and sometimes tripling her commute time to Sunrise.

Still, she and her husband, like Marks and her husband, don’t plan on leaving

anytime soon, given the proximity to Folsom Lake and the trusting, check-themail-on-vacation relationship they have with the neighbors.

“We have no intention of selling or moving from this house,” Mayers said.

That seems to be the case for most residents. According to Marks, there are a lot of people who have lived in Lakeridge longer than her. The neighborhood’s first homes came in around 1959 and while the area has seen its share of shifts, many residents stick around as long as they can.

That said, according to local Realtor Zac Bacon, five homes are currently up for sale — good news for those looking for their own slice of lakeside living.

Granite Bay residents deliver food, clothes to inner city kids

ranite Bay resident Trici Jones thought she’d just be doing a local book drive. But there she met Amaya Weiss, a learning specialist who was running a food bank and clothes closet for needy school districts in Sacramento.

“And my eyes were opened,” Jones said.

“You think there are all these other services and food banks in place to help hungry kids and homeless families, but the reality is that many families have no access. They can’t drive there and the places don’t deliver.” She explained that many of us have the impression that wheels are turning and help is available to every needy person. But it simply isn’t true.

“We all have the same needs. Every child needs a full tummy, dry socks, school supplies — and it’s not the child’s fault if they don’t have that,” she said.

She said she feels as if the entire Granite Bay community has stepped up to help.

“Every time I’ve been getting ready to make a food or clothing delivery, people call me and offer groceries or money,” Jones said.

She describes it as ongoing miracles.

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have given her a steady supply of donations as well.

“This has been so rewarding,” Jones said.

Popular Troop 121 Scoutmaster John Hooten dies

Hooten’s troop produced rate of Eagle Scouts far beyond national average

ong after his sons left Troop 121 in Granite Bay, John Hooten continued as scoutmaster, building one of the most successful Boy Scout troops in the Sacramento region, if not beyond.

Just 5 percent of Boy Scouts, approximately, attain the organization’s highest rank of Eagle Scout nationwide. But on Hooten’s watch, around one-third of the boys of Troop 121 became Eagle Scouts.

“He was the pulse of the troop,” said Wayne Getz, first assistant scoutmaster for the troop. “He was always upbeat, positive. No matter the situation, there was always a learning lesson there.”

Getz and others connected to the troop are dealing with some devastating news. Hooten, the popular leader of the Granite Bay troop and also a master rower, died March 5, a California Department of Parks and Recreation spokesman confirmed.

“He was rowing on Lake Natoma … and his rowing scull capsized and he drowned as a result,” spokesman Richard Preston said.

Preston said that an emergency call came in around 11:50 a.m.

that day. Hooten, a master rower at California State University, Sacramento, was rowing alone on the lake. Another person rowing behind him stopped and tried to provide assistance after realizing Hooten wasn’t in his boat anymore.

Local news outlets state that Susan Hooten was among 18 Olympic rowers that John Hooten coached at Vesper Boat Club in Philadelphia.

Getz estimated that in Hooten’s 21 years as scoutmaster for Troop 121, approximately 300 boys became Eagle Scouts there.

Placer County Sheriff Ed Bonner was a frequent guest at Eagle Courts of Honor for Troop 121 over the years.

“He was a real hero to me, because he did things for other people’s kids,” Bonner said.

Getz, who had two sons become Eagle Scouts under Hooten, said that the scoutmaster did his job out of love.

Hooten told the Press Tribune in 2011 that there was a sense of satisfaction and triumph in Boy Scouts equal to the greatest of athletic accomplishments. And in Hooten’s view, some aspects about scouting might have been better than sports.

Getz said Hooten’s death left a void in the troop.

“There’s going to be a lot of devastated boys,” Getz said.

Hello mushroom chorizo calzone KITCHEN VIEW |

fter one bite of my most recent creation, calzones immediately became my husband’s newest obsession. And since he doesn’t particularly enjoy mushrooms or spinach, I felt the accomplishment was a veritable success.

These chorizo mushroom calzones are wrapped in a flaky, butter crust recipe from Go Bold with Butter. Usually I do my best to avoid doughs and crusts whenever possible. My doughs tend to come out flat and chewy, while my crusts just crumble through my fingers before I can even get them into the dish. With this recipe, however, I didn’t experience any of my usual frustrations. After letting my KitchenAid do the kneading work for eight minutes or so, I covered the bowl with my dough in it with plastic wrap and considered where to leave it for the proofing. I considered the warmest, darkest room in my one-bedroom apartment and decided on (as strange as it may sound) the bathroom. I set the bowl on a shelf and started the kitchen timer for one hour.

While my dough was (hopefully) rising, I pulled out a pot and began cooking the chorizo and mushrooms. Although I am definitely not a vegetarian, when cooking with raw meat I sometimes think I ought to be. For a vegetarian option, you can substitute the chorizo for tofu chorizo or tofu mixed with marinara sauce.

Once the chorizo was in the pot, with relief I turned my attention to slicing the mushrooms into bite-sized pieces. After adding the garlic, oregano, sage and rosemary, the aroma that filled the air was making me hungry. But at this point, there was still a ways to go before calzones would be ready for consumption.

After the hour of proofing, my dough looked perfect. It had more than doubled its original size and the consistency was superb. The next few steps are fun and simple: For rolling the dough, I used a lightly floured pint glass instead of a rolling pin (since I don’t own a rolling pin). As with every recipe I make or follow, substitutions and alterations are absolutely acceptable.

After you’ve filled the dough with the chorizo-mushroom mixture, press the edges together with a fork. If the dough doesn’t seem to be sticking together when you press the edges down, try wetting the dough with a little water.

One of the great things about this recipe is it freezes well. If you don’t want to eat eight calzones for one meal, they don’t have to go to waste. The only thing that changes if they are frozen is an additional 10 minutes in the oven. These savory pastries are delicious with dipping sauces like marinara or ranch dressing. If you become obsessed with these tasty calzones after trying my recipe, experiment with your own fillings to create any type pastry pocket: barbecue chicken and corn; shepherd’s pie with ground beef, mashed potatoes and peas; grilled veggies and pesto; or whatever your palette desires. Enjoy!

MUSHROOM CHORIZO CALZONE Ingredients: Dough: 3½ cups all-purpose flour 2¼ teaspoon active-dry yeast 1 cup water 1/3 cup (5 tablespoons plus 1 teaspoon) unsalted butter 1 tablespoon honey Calzone: 3 links chorizo, sliced 8 oz crimini mushrooms, washed and sliced 1 large bunch spinach, chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced ½ cup black olives 1 teaspoon each dried

oregano, rosemary and sage 1 cups mozzarella, shredded 1 cup swiss cheese, shredded 1 cup parmesan, shredded 1 egg + 1 tsp water for egg wash Marinara sauce and ranch dressing for dipping

Directions: 1. For the calzone dough, I used a recipe for pizza dough by Go Bold with Butter: These step will take approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.

2. In bowl of stand mixer fitted with dough hook combine 2 cups of flour with yeast and salt. In small saucepan set over low heat, warm water, butter and honey until butter is melted. Remove from heat and let sit for about 5 minutes, or until 120-130°F. 3. Add liquids to mixer and mix until combined. With mixer on low speed, add remaining flour ¼ cup at a time, waiting until it is incorporated before adding more. Add just enough flour so that the dough clears bowl but is still slightly sticky to touch. You may not need all 4 cups of flour.

4. Continue to knead dough with mixer on medium low speed until dough is smooth and elastic, about 5-8 minutes. Place dough in buttered bowl, cover with plastic wrap and let rise in warm spot until doubled, about 1 hour.

5. During this time, preheat oven to 350 F. Cook chorizo and mushrooms in a large pot over medium-high, stirring occasionally, about 10 minutes. Stir in garlic, spinach, olives and herbs; season with salt. Cook 5-10 more minutes. Remove from heat.

6. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment.

7. Wait until dough is ready and then use your fist to gently punch it down. Place on lightly floured surface and knead a few times. Return to bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Let sit for 10 more minutes.

8. Cut dough into 8 equal portions and roll into balls. Roll out dough individually on a lightly floured surface to a 7-8 inch diameter circle. Transfer ½ cup filling and ½ cup cheese to center of circle. Fold dough in half over filling to create a half moon.

9. Using a fork, press edges to seal completely. Transfer to prepared sheet. Repeat with remaining dough, filling and cheese.

10. Whisk egg and water in a small bowl. Brush tops of calzones with egg wash using a brush or your finger.

11. Bake about 30 minutes or until tops are golden brown.

ith plantings dating back as far as 1850, Lodi has become a region with over 100 varietals in production, home to more than 80 wineries, covering 100,000 acres of which about two-thirds are dedicated to red varietals, making it one the most diverse wine regions in California.

Known for zinfandel, with plantings dating back as far as 1888, Lodi is recognized as the Zinfandel Capital of the World producing over 40 percent of California’s premium zinfandel.

With the Lodi appellation having a classic Mediterranean climate featuring warm days and cool evenings, vineyards are able to grow a diverse range of varietals. Spanish varieties such as albarino, verdejo, graciano, tempranillo and garnacha. Portu-

guese varieties such as touriga nacional, tinta cao, souzao, verdelho and tricadeira. German varietals such as kerner, bacchus, riesling, Dornfelder, gewurztraminer and zweigelt. Italian varietals: barbera, aglianco, sangiovese, teroldego and vermentino are just to name a few. Varieties common to the Rhône region of Southern France such as cinsault, viognier, syrah, picpoul blanc and tannat do extremely well.

Lodi is also starting to be recognized for producing excellent quality cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay, merlot and sauvignon blanc. This is only to name the most common varietals, there are many more to be discovered in this appellation.

There’s one-click ordering. There’s food delivery in 30 minutes or less. There’s credit available with the swipe of a card.

More so than any time in history, we have forgotten the art of sacrifice.

Can you blame us? Mainstream marketing tells us hundreds of times each day that we should have it all, and that we should have it right now.

The problem with this have-it-all-right-now mindset is that real accomplishments require sacrifice and delayed gratification. And these real accomplishments are where true satisfaction is found.

Think about it for a moment. When was the last time that you felt proud of something that you’ve done? I doubt that it was for the shoe purchase that you just one-click ordered online. More likely it was for a big project that you tackled at work, or a meal

that you cooked for your family, or an 5K (or marathon!) that you finished.

Those proud moments have one thing in common: They all required sacrifice and delayed gratification. You gave up your time, you invested your attention and efforts, you put in the miles.

And then you achieved your goal and experienced that sweet satisfaction.

Learning how to sacrifice and delay gratification, rather than getting something right now, is a skill set. This skill set can grow as you use it more often. Just like a muscle that becomes stronger under resistance, your ability to sacrifice your immediate needs in favor of a larger accomplishment will improve the more you use it.

Sacrifice and delayed gratification are the name of the game when it comes to getting into great shape. Get comfortable with sacrifice and you’ll achieve any goal.

I know that’s not what any of us want to hear. We’d prefer the one-click-to-dream-body button over months of a controlled diet plan and challenging workouts. But by embracing and enhancing your ability to sacrifice, you’ll gain traction on all of your big life goals, including getting that dream body.
