A MESSAGE FROM THE TOWN MANAGER Welcome to Loomis, where “a small town is like a big family!” This amazing community of just under 7,000 residents is truly one big family. From one-of-a-kind signature events like the Eggplant Festival and the day before Thanksgiving parade, to our support of our beloved Del Oro Golden Eagles, this town knows what it means to come together and celebrate the uniqueness that makes Loomis the great place it is.
A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAMBER EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Thank you for taking the time to explore our Town of Loomis We have a lot to be proud of in Loomis, and we are excited to share it all with you. As you dive into the pages of the Discover Loomis visitor guide you will find our small town offers many activities and places to Eat, Shop, and Sip Local. We would love to see you one of our many family-friendly events like the Community Yards Sale, Placer Grown Farmers Market, Friday Night Summer Concerts, 31st Annual Eggplant Festival, Day Before Thanksgiving Parade, Cowpoke Fall Gathering Poetry, and Craft Fairs and Tree Lightings. The Chamber is also a visitor center so if you would like to learn more about our community we invite you to stop in and check us out. We also encourage you to visit our Loomis Library and Community Center where our Historical Society has information and displays honoring our deep historical agricultural heritage traditions. Our Loomis Basin Chamber of Commerce is 58 years strong and we are honored to work hand-in-hand with the Town of Loomis staff and officials to fulfill the responsibility of creating a friendly community and a successful businesses environment.
Jenny Knisley
Traditions are important, and Loomis takes them seriously. There’s something to be said about neighbors coming together to enjoy a beautiful day, celebrating the most regal fruit in all the land during the annual Eggplant Festival in October. Community events like the Eggplant Festival remind us that, no matter our individual politics or agendas, we can all put that aside for a day and enjoy each other’s company and some great food. Speaking of traditions, as you most likely know, Loomis is famous for our fruit packing sheds — these sheds made our little Town the fruit packing epicenter of the nation at one time. We still see the vestiges of them at High Hand Nursery and The Blue Goose. Honoring our history is important and, to that end, the Loomis Basin Chamber of Commerce and Town of Loomis have created the Loomis Legacy Loop. This walking tour provides a historical context to the fruit-packing shed murals that you may see scattered throughout Town. If you’re visiting, make sure to check it out. And if you’re looking to open a business in Loomis, come see me at Town Hall. We’re working hard to make sure businesses can thrive in Loomis. A recently-completed Downtown street beautification project (and another in the planning stages) shows our dedication to making Loomis a place you’ll want to locate your business. With everything from a truly unique nursery experience at High Hand and beautiful home furnishings at The Feathered Nest, to the best hometown burgers at Taylor’s and high-end eyewear at EyeChicks, Loomis is open for business. We stand ready to welcome you to our Big Family!

espite its small size, the town of Looms — just off Interstate 80 in south Placer County — looms large when it comes to the region’s storied past. In the mid-1800s, the town became a popular settlement for gold miners, thanks to the nuggets in surrounding streams and rivers. In the early 20th century, Loomis became a stop for the first transcontinental railroad, leading to a future in agriculture. Local peaches, pears, plums and other fruit was shipped out of its packing sheds to the East Coast, helping to put Placer County on the map. In the mid-’50s, during the golden age of autos, Loomis was a stop along historic Highway 40, the nation’s busiest transcontinental highway. Interstate 80 has replaced Highway. 40, but Taylor Road is still the heart of downtown Loomis, with historic fruit sheds such as High Hand Nursery and Cafe and Blue Goose Fruit Shed and Event Center, other longtime businesses like Main Drug and imaginative new ones such as LBB Gastropub & Smokehouse. Now downtown Loomis is entering a new era: It has launched a multimillion-dollar streetscape project to preserve its past and prepare its downtown for a prosperous future. “We are very excited to be replacing the sidewalk on Taylor Road between Horseshoe Bar Road and Oak Street,” said Britton Snipes, the town’s engineer and public works director. “This project will not only make our downtown area more pedestrian and bicycle friendly but will expand it in a way that honors our history and values.” The long-awaited plan includes new sidewalks, curbs, gutters, streetlights, high-visibility pedestrian crossings, bike paths, and parking along Taylor Road between Oak Street and Horseshoe Bar Road, a core part of its downtown. New landscaping has been installed. Future work could include expanding the streetscape to King Road and Sierra College Boulevard along Taylor Road, as well as from Interstate 80 to the train depot on Horseshoe Bar Road. Loomis business owners and civic leaders hope it encourages locals and visitors to walk down uniform sidewalks going from High Hand Nursery and Cafe and its historic fruit shed to Horseshoe Bar Road, past numerous local merchants. The sidewalks also are ADA accessible.
Photo by Dr. Junie Baldonado, DDS depicting local historic crate labels (20 different ones have been chosen), creating an historical walk. The crosswalks include stamped asphalt with lights in the pavement.
Loomis is well known for its small-town character and historic structures, and city planners have been careful to ensure that the project is unique. The town’s motto is “A small town is like In a nod to its past, Loomis’ new downtown sidewalks have tiles a big family.” 1 0 · D I S C O V E R L O O MI S · A publication of the Loomis N ews for the Loomi s Chamber of Comm erce

LOOMIS EGGPLANT FESTIVAL STORY AND PHOTOS BY MARTHA GARCIA
Every year on the first Saturday in October, South Placer County takes on a pleasant aubergine hue as Loomis hosts a unique — and free — event for the entire family. The 31st annual Loomis Eggplant Festival takes place this year from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, at the Loomis Train Depot, in the heart of this friendly foothill town. The Eggplant Festival is a blend of music and entertainment, gourmet and festival food, kids’ activities, arts and crafts, cooking contest and demonstrations, and over 100 booths by community organizations and businesses — all while celebrating the purple fruit and the town’s agricultural roots.

IRIS GARDEN GROWS IN PARK-LIKE SETTING PHOTOS BY MARTHA GARCIA When you visit the Horton Iris Garden in Loomis, it’s difficult to imagine that much of the land was once covered in blackberry brambles and weeds before Mary Ann Horton started the garden almost 20 years ago. Mary Ann began by gathering many unnamed historic iris rhizomes in the surrounding countryside to landscape the Webb farm house. Frank Webb and Pearl built the home in 1915, on property settled in 1857 by Elisha Webb, a gold miner and cattle rancher. Ed Horton, Mary Ann’s husband, is the son of Hazel (Webb) Horton, Elisha’s granddaughter, When a disease destroyed most of the fruit trees in the late 1960s and a decline in economic conditions, the family decided not to replant. Different parts of the acreage were sold over the years and the farm house was a rental for many years. At one time, the property numbered 240 acres planted with extensive orchards and vineyards and cattle ranching. Once she discovered sources for newer hybridized irises, Mary Ann Horton couldn’t clear the weeds fast enough. In 1999, she opened her gardens to the public, all while continuing her position as a college mathematics teacher. Today, the five-acre park-like setting at the corner of King and Val Verde roads is dotted with 1,300 varieties of irises, which include fragrant, re-blooming (that bloom more than once during

the year), historic, or new iris varieties. Horton has planted over 50 varieties of daylilies. There are also picnic areas for private groups and an art display wall for artists, including Doug Horton, Mary Ann’s son, who creates jewelry and garden art. In 2003, Doug Horton, his wife, Jennifer, and their daughter, Majken, returned to Loomis and continue to help expand and maintain the iris garden. Later, they built a new home on the farm property that they share with Majken, the sixth generation to live and work on the farm. Ed Horton, son of Ed and Hazel Horton, reclaimed and remodeled the house in the early 1980s. He and Mary Ann Horton were married in 1990 and soon after, as a hobby, she began the project for what would become the Horton Iris Garden as it can be seen and enjoyed today. — SOURCE: HORTONIRISGARDEN.COM

COWPOKE FALL GATHERING PROMOTING COWBOY HERITAGE BY MARTHA GARCIA
I
f there’s a cowboy festival, poetry gathering or western event in North America, Larry Maurice has probably performed there. He’s also a favorite at the Cowpoke Fall Gathering of Cowboy Music, Stories and Verse in Loomis, where he’ll return to the Blue Goose Event Center from Nov. 8 to 11. For 35 years, Maurice has been a cowboy, horse wrangler and packer in the Eastern Sierra Nevada and high deserts of Nevada, all while keeping up with his busy entertainment schedule. Maurice uses his stories, poetry and song to “transport audiences back in time, allowing them to experience the cattle drives, characters and critters of the old west,” according to his website. For four days each fall, the Cowpoke Fall Gathering celebrates cowboy culture through poetry, music, storytelling and song with a varied stable of wellknown performers. Young people from area schools also get a feel for western traditions through a program in which they perform their own original poetry and that puts them on the same stage with professional poets appearing at the gathering. Jamie Lynn Dovenberg, a Del Oro High School student, was the winner of a $1,000 scholarship from the Cowpoke Foundation. The Cowpoke Fall Gathering is the premier event of the Cowpoke Foundation – started in 1995 by Bert and Carol Braun of Loomis. The foundation’s mission is to preserve and promote the American cowboy heritage. Early confirmations to appear with Larry Maurice at the 2018 Cowboy Poetry Gathering are Bill Brewster and Kristyn Harris. According to Carol Braun, Harris has auditioned for the television show “American Idol,” and was invited by the show promoters to appear in Hollywood.

ONE AND THE SAME By Jamie Lynn Dovenberg, student poet We have our old fair share of buckers Ones that won’t walk or won’t run The fighters and criers and diggers And the ones that aren’t any fun But the dust settles down to a Friesian/warlander To the eye one may call her mundane but inside her lay strength like a tower Which could be seen as a cowboy’s bane She’d stare down the many farm workers Not a soul could look her in the face But then came the face that would match her A young girl who’d soon match her pace Two pairs of brown eyes now students together The horse learning as much as it taught Both stubborn with undoubted determination But an understanding soon found as they fought
The powerful hooves drove beneath them A bay and a blonde with a cause To push and to drive to all limits That led to so many to pause Each fight would soon bring understanding Of traits different and one in the same The girl who found her perfect partner And the horse who found a spark to her flame A Queen of pastures met a queen of the country Both were spirited, quick-witted, and strong This pair could carry the world’s many burdens And protect anyone who’d been wronged Everyone had their judgments and remarks But nothing could have stopped such a mighty creation With rider and animal one in the same No stronger love than in this combination

“I wanted artists to be able to show their work so they didn’t have to start their own business and be there 40 hours a week, so we each take turns working,” said co-founder and mixed-media artist Patricia Sokolowski. “It’s a nice variety, a little bit of everything for everyone.” The gallery houses a varied collection of paintings, sculpture, ceramic arts, jewelry, fused glass and textiles, and ceramic pieces all artfully arranged together. “It’s not your typical co-op where you go in and artists are assigned individual square footage. We have art everywhere mixed in with other others’ work,” Sokolowski added. “We have the artists bring in new work every two months and we change the gallery out so there is always something new to see.” The gallery features a wide variety of art forms at many price points, making it an ideal place to add to an existing art collection, as well as find unique gifts. You can find large-format sculptures and paintings, as well as jewelry, dishware and small-sized prints. “We hold many exciting events each year that are free to the public,” said Gia McNutt, High Hand Gallery Loomis Chamber representative, and member artist. “Come join us for upcoming events such as ArtFest, April 7 and 8, featuring over 50 local artists, their art, demonstrations, live music, and classes. Later in the year we have the K9 Warrior Art Fundraiser, the PlacerArts Studios Tour, and Steampunk Victorian Holiday Fair. All events can be found on the gallery website, www.highhandartgallery.com. In addition, we have a beautiful new Gallery II, featuring special displays throughout the year.”

wner Kenny Gowan came up with a unique concept for his new Loomis restaurant. Gowan takes the quality of the GastroPub and melds it with the flavor of a Smokehouse. He wanted to be certain that this restaurant was a place for the community to gather. Taking on the job of restoring an old café, Gowan used all local trade workers. “The locals that worked on this restaurant, take immense pride in the finished results,” Gowan said. GastroPub refers to a restaurant that specializes in serving high-quality food. LBB GastroPub and Smokehouse delivers quality with a unique twist of barbecue. The menu ranges from ribs of a smokehouse to specialty items like the falafel burger. The diverse menu is sure to please even the most sophisticated palate. The Smokin’ Nachos, which takes standard nachos to a new level. The dish has smoked cheddar with smoked chicken and pulled-pork. Gowan, a fourth-generation Loomis resident, is hoping that the investment in the town of Loomis will create a trend of revamping. This trend could create a hub of business that will attract visitors to take a detour from the highway. After talking to Gowan, it is refreshing to hear the pride of his town in regards to the success of the brewery and the restaurant. And Loomis stands behind local business people.

THE ART OF MAKING WINE
To Sacramento / San Francisco
KEVIN STEVENSON, OWNER OF LE CASQUE WINES, TAKES US BEHIND THE WINERY DOORS WRITTEN AND PHOTOS BY TESSA MARGUERITE The wines of Le Casque are alive with a symphony of flavors from vineyards throughout Placer, El Dorado, Nevada and Amador counties. Kevin Stevenson, owner of Le Casque Wines is a creative musician, has a stubborn personality and likes really good wine; a perfect blend for the owner of a winery. Stevenson and his wife, Ann, moved from Minnesota to Placer County’s vineyard community Clos Du Lac in 1999. There was an abundance of grapes, and not enough hands to tend to them. Stevenson, an avid musician and music producer at the time, set aside his guitar to help and got “carried away.” Within a few years, he started his own vineyard management company selling grapes for the neighborhood. Stevenson started his own label in 2006 and found that he not only had a passion for making music, but for making wine as well.
either at the winery or in the vineyards. He is meticulous about the quality of the grapes going into his presses. “Our strength is our fruit sources,” Stevenson said. “We go looking for great fruit, because once fruit comes in, I can’t make it any better. I can only change it, stylistically; that’s the art.”
FROM VINE TO WINE “It’s a weird combination of patience and physical labor,” Stevenson reflected. Harvest is “normally” early September to early November, Stevenson said, but it varies depending on the weather. This year, harvest began in September in Placer County where vineyards grow at about 600 feet above sea level, and ended in late October in El Dorado County vineyards at 3,000 feet.
Le Casque winery opened in Loomis in November, 2011. The tasting room is located at the Flower Farm in Loomis, close to Roseville, Auburn and Folsom.
Grapes grown at lower elevations will make wine that is big, dark, spicy and more alcoholic. Higher elevations produce grapes that are less tannic, but have a black pepper flavor. “Tannic,” Stevenson explained, “is when it feels like you have a sweater on your tongue.”
When Stevenson is not pouring wine in the tasting room, he’s

sanitation,” Stevenson said. “It’s actually very glamorous.”
Tim Weyrich, Le Casque winemaker, has been with Stevenson since the harvest of 2013. Weyrich grew up in Paso Robles and is the nephew of John and Annie Bowler, owners of the Flower Farm. “We’re in the vineyards all the time throughout summer and harvest,” he said. “A day or two can make a big difference during harvest.” When the grapes have been harvested, crushed, pressed and fermented, they are then combined according to the desired variety and character and aged in stainless steel tanks or oak barrels.
OAK BARRELS At Le Casque, wine is aged in either stainless steel tanks, or oak barrels. “We use a combination of new and used from different forests for more complex wine,” Stevenson said. French oak barrels cost approximately $1,100 per barrel and last about five years. American oak barrels are aggressive, and make more of an impression, Stevenson said. “Petite Syrah is dark, inky, briary and big,” Stevenson explained. “Generally we only use American oak barrels for that wine.” White wine stays in the barrel, or tank, for as little as four months or up to over a
time. It needs a minimum of 14 months or up to two years. If a new French barrel is filled with wine for one year, it will have imparted about 80 percent of its flavor to the wine by the Folsom end of those 12 months.Lake But not all wines need a strong oaky flavor, so the barrel can be used again. “Grenache we don’t generally use new oak barrels,” Stevenson admitted. “Grenache is not a big, dark taste; it’s more fruity; and the new oak doesn’t match the wine.” Stevenson knows the taste of each barrel, sometimes learning through trial by error. “The percentage of new oak we use every year is high,” he said. “A big expense; but it shows at the end of the day.”
BOTTLED AND WAITING Crisp and clear; big, oaky and buttery; light and fruity; or dark and spicy. The breadth of varieties at Le Casque will likely suit any wine-lover’s taste. A tasting at Le Casque will introduce you to two whites, five reds and a port – and more if you become a wine club member. Le Casque Wines makes about 3,000 cases per year, has won two Best in Class in the San Francisco Chronicle’s wine competition and has received multiple Gold and Double Gold awards at the California State Fair. Bottles range in price $18 to $48.

INTERIOR FOR THE MODERN HOSTESS BY PAIGE SMITH A birthday and shopping trip to Las Vegas for Debbie Massie, Amy Bangs and Shannon Ertel led to an idea for bringing unique home furnishings, decor and gifts to Loomis. That idea turned into an 11,000-square-foot boutique furniture store that reflects each of them. “For us, it’s an extension of what happens when we gather, when we sit around the table and share stories,” The Feathered Nest website reads. “It’s where we talk about hospitality, friendship, and food ... and then decide to go shopping.” There are plenty of traditional elements for Massie, although she appreciates all styles. Bangs loves a modern touch. And then there is Ertel, who might have to be told more than once that something is “a bit over the top.”

LOOMIS SELF STORAGE We opened Loomis Self Storage in 2004. At that time, all we knew about the storage business was what we had learned online. Previously, I had spent 20 years in the computer business and my wife Nancy and I had been in the promo products logo business (4LogoGEAR). We jumped into storage business with both feet. We learned in about 50 percent of the cases where people needed a storage room, that they were going through something difficult (a job loss, a house loss, a divorce, a death, a move...). We decided we’d try to make sure we were kind, friendly and understanding. We learned cleanliness is important, so we have tried to have the cleanest and nicest facility you can find. We learned customers want the security to be “high tech.” Our own Sean helps here and we have about 36 state-ofthe-art cameras watching our facilities and we can watch them all on our cell phones. We even have some cameras that can let us know a person is on the site, that maybe shouldn’t be there. We hope when you become our customer that you know “We care,” “We’re clean” and “We’re high-tech.” We’ve been fortunate to win the BEST of the BEST Storage Facility, from the Loomis News, for seven straight years. We currently have about 300 storage rooms (off of Swetzer at Jetton) and 200 RV+Boat spaces (on Rippey Rd.). Our NEW facility on Taylor Road, between Del Oro and the SHELL station,

opens this year. We will add more storage rooms and more RV+Boat spaces. We know that taking care of customers has helped us be successful. Additionally, the Loomis Chamber of Commerce has been a big part of our success. We joined the Chamber in 2004 and met a great bunch of business people that went out of their way with advice and with spreading “our story.” The Chamber had a “ribbon-cutting” at our new site in 2004 and we met Gary Doupnik Sr. that day. A few years later, we started renting land for our RV parking, from the Doupnik family (and still do). They have been great landlords and that wouldn’t have happened without the Loomis Chamber connection. Loomis has treated us great and we highly recommend you spend some time “Discovering Loomis.” You’ll find it really is a bit like “Mayberry” (from the TV show). — LOOMIS SELF STORAGE

HISTORICAL MURAL
The Loomis Mural Project pays tribute to the town’s rich agricultural history. The self-guided tour gives residents and visitors to Loomis a close-up look at 14 fruit packing label murals. The murals, painted by local artisans, are reproductions of some of the colorful labels used by area ranchers and growers to identify the fruit packed in the wooden crates they used for shipping for nearly 70 years.
WALKING GUIDE
The use of the affixed labels came to an end in the late 1950s, when the pre-printed boxes replaced the older wooden crates. The Loomis Mural Project is one way of remembering the town’s past, keeping it alive and sharing it with current and future generations.

1. LOOMIS LEGACY LOOP (START KIOSK) Birthplace of the California Fruit Industry The first car load of fresh fruit shipped out of California for the eastern markets was shipped from Newcastle to Chicago in about 1879. (It arrived a total loss.) Loomis opened its first fruit house in 1889 and grew to five shipping companies within eight years. “Mountain Grown” became known throughout the trade as a slogan for Placer County peaches, plums and pears, with their exceptionally high quality of flavor. In the 1940s, the Loomis fruit district shipped 4,500 train cars of plums every summer.
2. GATEWAY BRAND L.J. Kinney Illinois native Lindsley J. Kinney came to San Francisco in 1881 where he worked for five years as a wholesale grocery clerk. Returning to Illinois, he worked in the grocery department of Sears-Roebuck Company until 1905. He came back to California and took up farming on a 50 acre ranch on King Road, 2.5 miles east of Loomis. He named his ranch “The Falls Orchard” after the 5 foot fall in the ditch on his property.
3. VALLEY OF THE GODS Scribner & Mayden In 1919, Butler Noles Scribner, an insurance agent from Rocklin, and John Lincoln Mayden, a candy merchant from Sacramento, became partners in a pear orchard located at the corner of Citrus Colony Road and Del Mar Avenue, northwest of Loomis. Packed under the Valley of the Gods label, the fruit was marketed through the Pioneer Fruit Company.
4. HOLLY GLEN ORCHARDS John A. Ferguson California native John A. Ferguson came to this area at age six and grew up working in his father’s orchards on Miner’s Ravine, southeast of Loomis. In 1896, he purchased 20 acres on Wells Avenue. He cleared the land, planted it to orchard, and named it Holly Glen. His holdings eventually grew to 200 acres. He shipped fruit with the Loomis Fruit Growers Association for which he served as president in 1919.
5. HIGH-HAND Loomis Fruit Growers Association Loomis Fruit Growers Association incorporated April 29, 1901, with 18 charter members. It was the first member association of the California Fruit Exchange. The High-Hand label was in use by 1923 and was registered as a trademark in 1926. Within the trade, it was often referred to as the “Four Aces” brand. Early versions of the label had a white background, then a yellow background, and later a blue background. The last operating fruit shed in Placer County, Loomis Fruit Growers closed in 2001.
6. MOTHER’S TREAT BRAND Heggblade-Marguleas Co. In 1944, Ernest S. Beckett formed the Beckett Fruit Company, a fruit packing and shipping operation located in Penryn. Fruit was packed under the Mother’s Treat Brand label and marketed through Heggblade-Marguleas Company, a San Francisco based firm founded in 1934 by Frank Heggblade and Joseph Marguleas. Heggblade-Marguleas Company revolutionized the produce shipping business by selling direct to retailers, rather than through auction markets.
7. MOONSHINE ORCHARD P.L. Taylor Porter Lee Taylor, a native a Slick Rock, Kentucky, came to Loomis in 1901 at the age of 18. His home ranch, Moonshine Orchard, was located on Moonshine Lane, northeast of Loomis. He owned several ranches, managed various fruit houses including the American Fruit Growers (Blue Goose), and started the Canning Pear Association. He also owned the Herbert and Taylor label.
8. MAGNOLIA ORCHARD H.N. Hansen Son of Danish immigrants, Hans Nicholas “Nick” Hansen was born in Benicia, California, and came to Loomis in 1892 at
age eight. He grew up on his father’s ranch on Dane Colony Lane, now Leak Lane, east of town. He purchased a nearby ranch on Horseshoe Bar Road at Hansen Road and named it Magnolia Orchard. He was president of the Loomis Fruit Growers Association from 1937 to 1950.
9. VALLEY VISTA ORCHARD Chris Larsen A native of Denmark, Christian Larsen came to Loomis in 1901, purchasing a 40-acre ranch along Horseshoe Bar Road, 3.5 miles east of town. He grew plums, peaches, pears, cherries and nectarines. His Valley Vista label was printed by the Schmidt Lithograph Company, San Francisco. The Valley Vista name and the scene on the label were inspired by the view from his front porch.
10. CALIFORNIA FRUIT EXCHANGE The California Fruit Exchange incorporated May 1, 1901, with member associations from Loomis, Newcastle and Penryn. It grew to be the largest fruit growers cooperative organization on the Pacific coast. The Loomis Agency was established as a direct unit of the company in 1928 after the Loomis Fruit Growers Association left the cooperative. A large shipping and packing house, built in 1931, was in use until the Loomis Agency closed in 1994.
11. “OUR PICK” Loomis Fruit Growers Association In 1923, Loomis Fruit Growers Association developed a quality-control system for inspecting packing operations on the ranches. Three years later, they built a modern, highly mechanized Central Packing House and began offering fruit packing services, in addition to marketing and shipping. The facility was the first of its kind in Placer County. While the HighHand label designated the company’s highest-quality fruit, the “Our Pick” label was used on crates of slightly lower grade product.
12. HPL BRAND Harold P. Leak Harold P. Leak began making boxes in the Penryn fruit sheds at age ten. From 1920 to 1924, he managed the Loomis Agency of the American Fruit Growers (Blue Goose). He purchased 40 acres on Leak Lane, east of Loomis, in 1909 and 240 acres on the American River in 1921. He grew peaches, plums, pears, cherries and grapes. His HPL Brand label was used on fruit crates packed in sheds at both ranch locations.
13. BLUE ANCHOR California Fruit Exchange George H. Cutter, one of the founders of the California Fruit Exchange, suggested the “Anchor” as a symbol as early as 1903. It was first used in 1904 and gradually came to be accepted as the company logo. In 1923, it was registered as a trademark designating the company’s highest quality fruit. The California Fruit Exchange was renamed Blue Anchor, Inc. in 1969.
14. BLUE GOOSE American Fruit Growers, Inc. American Fruit Growers, Inc., also known as American National Growers Corporation, was a fruit and vegetable packer and marketing organization that operated nation-wide under the Blue Goose brand. The Loomis Agency occupied various fruit sheds before building a new shipping and central packing house in 1931. The company officially changed its name to Blue Goose Growers, Inc., in 1961.

hen Porter Lee Taylor arrived in Loomis in 1903 at age 18, he had about $20 in his pocket. He was one of 10 children (eight of whom eventually came to California), born to Abel Cain Taylor and Nancy Catherine Harper in Slickrock, Kentucky. Porter Taylor purchased a 70-acre farm north of Loomis, where he raised pears, plums, peaches, and cherries and which he called Moonshine Orchard. While he was farming, he also became the manager of the Producer’s Fruit Company in Loomis. He later worked for the Production Credit Company in Sacramento. In 1937, he went to work for the American Fruit Growers (Blue Goose) and was manager of two of the American sheds, one in Placerville and one in Newcastle. He soon became the district manager for the company and proceeded to expand it in northern California to include Loomis, Auburn, Tudor (Sutter County), and a melon shed in Biggs (Butte County). In 1939 Porter Taylor purchased 400 acres off Rock Springs Road. At one time, he farmed approximately 640 acres, including some property in the Yuba City/ Marysville area. During the time he was Northern District Manager for the American Fruit Growers, he encouraged the canneries to purchase Placer County fruit for use in the canneries This meant the fruit would not have to be shipped east to other more distant markets. His many progressive ideas were an asset to the fruit industry.

Mosquito Ridge Road north of Foresthill. This road was sorely needed in order to get the timber that could be used for making boxes to ship fruit. He was successful with his lobbying of the Congress. Taylor was well known and respected throughout the fruit industry. After his death in 1950, a committee had been formed to recommend to the Placer County Board of Supervisors a name for U.S. Highway 40 that would be replaced by the new Interstate 80. Mr. Taylor’s name was the only one suggested and by unanimous vote the supervisors decided that U.S 40, from Auburn to Roseville be called “Taylor Road.” A few years later a portion of the road from Ophir to Auburn was renamed Ophir Road at the request of Ophir-area residents.
Harold P. Leak began making boxes in the Penryn fruit sheds at age 10. His H•P•L Brand label was used on fruit crates packed in sheds at both ranch locations.
Porter Taylor had seven children. Marguerite Taylor Nute, one of his daughters, stayed in the Loomis area for nearly her entire life, until she passed away in 2002. His son, Walter, lived in Loomis all of his life; he died in 2017. Many of Porter Taylor’s ranches were owned with his brothers. He also owned Clingstone Ranch, which is now the site of the Popie Winery, part of the Duarte family vineyards. Porter Taylor was one of the few growers that actually had two fruit crate labels in his name. The Herbert and Taylor label was owned with the principal of the Penryn School; the label only existed for a short time.

riving throughout Loomis, you may find colorful patterns on the side of barns or homes. The designs are barn quilts, not a fuzzy blanket but plywood with a painted pattern designed by the Loomis Basin Barn Quilt Committee, organized by Jan Struble. “A barn quilt is a colorful quilt pattern painted on a 4-feet-by 4-feet piece of plywood and mounted on a barn or historical building,” Struble said. “The first one I created was Citrus Beauty for Struble Ranch Mandarins.” The display and passion for this project led Struble to organize a group of women in the Loomis Basin area who were part of a quilting club to join and create more for the surrounding area. The group goes to meet with people who are interested in telling their story and what they would like and this gives the team the opportunity to get a pattern together to tell their story in a barn quilt pattern. The process takes about a month so that the husbands can put together the plywood and pencil in the pattern and then the women can paint in the pattern.
“We only do it during the summer, so the paint can dry in the heat and a pattern forms with the colors,” Struble said.
LOOMIS BASIN BARN QUILT COMMITTEE Jan Struble (916) 652-7503 loomisbasinbarnquilts@gmail.com
Currently, the group has created 20 barn quilts for the Loomis Basin area and are always accepting applications; however, they are staying strictly local. “We have said no to people before because we want to keep it within the community,” Struble said. With the quilts staying local, it makes for an intriguing self-guided tour that takes visitors to view the barn quilts on different homes in the area. While they are on private property, visitors can see them from the street and can take photographs. A copy of the map trail can be picked up at Struble Ranch and the first barn quilt in the area can be seen there. Placer County is the third barn quilt trail in California, with the other two residing in Plumas County and Lake County. “Once this becomes a chore, we will be done,” Struble said with a laugh.

ig into the fascinating past of the Loomis Basin at the Loomis Library and Community Learning Center, where an area is now dedicated to a growing history museum and a genealogy center. Previously, as a branch of the Placer County Library, the Loomis Library had a selection of history books on its shelves. Since it reopened in 2017 as the municipal Loomis Library and Community Learning Center, additional space has been made available for the history section. Since the Loomis Basin Historical Society was founded in 1993, its members have worked to discover, collect, preserve and make accessible the history and heritage of the Loomis Basin. Toward the rear of the Loomis Library, visitors will now find an assortment of books that tell the story of the early days of the region. Also on display are just a few of the many artifacts that have been either collected or donated to the Historical Society.

The Loomis Library’s genealogy section, next to the museum area, contains research guides and reference books, useful for “digging” for answers into tracing family trees. There are also books and periodicals for other states and of general interest for research.

INDIAN CREEK COUNTRY CLUB STARTED IN 1967 FAMILY MAINTAINS PARENTS’ LEGACY OF 50 YEARS BY GLORIA BEVERAGE | PHOTO BY TINA RAIBLEY/SIMPLY PORTRAITS Jane and James Davis Clark, a golf pro from Boston, had a dream.
INDIAN CREEK COUNTRY CLUB
4487 Barton Road, Loomis Phone: (916) 652-5546 More info: indiancreekgolfcourse.com
The East Coast residents chased that dream across the United States, heading to California in the 1960s in search of the perfect location to build a golf course. They drove all over the state seeking the ideal location. “When they came up I-80 (toward Auburn), they found 150 acres with an old farmhouse in Loomis,” recalled their daughter, Jan Clark-Crets. The property had the ideal terrain for a golf course – thousands of Valley oak trees and granite rock outcroppings. And it was ideally located, just off the freeway and close to Sierra College, Clark-Crets added. After her father designed a beginning golfer-friendly course, neighbors and family members pitched in to create a par 32 course that Jane Clark dubbed Indian Creek Country Club in 1968. Her mother named each of the nine holes (Away We Go, Hawk Lake, Pine Tree) and used her artistic skills to design the clubhouse and business logo. She oversaw the remodeling of the farmhouse, which became the family residence, according to Clark-Crets. After the couple divorced, Jane Clark and her oldest son kept the course running until 1996 when she passed away. After her mother died, Jan Clark-Crets took over management of the course until 2007 when the family decided to sell it. The property was received back into the family’s hands in 2011 when the purchase went into foreclosure and the facility was in poor condition. Clark-Crets and her husband Jim set their sights on recreating the family-friendly business her parents had developed. Other members of the family, including her brothers, Bill Clark, Tom Nash and sister Kathy Nash have been supportive family shareholders.
Penryn resident Pat Maloney, a longtime employee, is the Pro Shop Manager and has been instrumental in the resurgence of the course. Jan’s daughter Meaghan Jiles is the facility’s Assistant Manager and is learning the ropes of managing the course from her mother. Jiles, a 2007 graduate of Del Oro High School, is passionate about the property and the dream to keep the family legacy alive. Brother-in-law Gary Crets came on board in 2011. “I had visited the course many times over the years,” he said. “My favorite memory of the course is people enjoying the family-friendly atmosphere. I have seen grandparents, their children and their grandkids having fun here.” In his role as director of operations, Crets is overseeing the completion of various capital-improvement projects on the property. “Significant improvements have been made throughout the course and the owners have plans to continue improving every player’s experience,” Crets said. Clark-Crets added that many of the original customers have returned to play the course. “It’s a really challenging course and it’s in a beautiful location,” she said. Clark-Crets and her husband bought back the old family farmhouse in 2013 to solidify her dream to truly come home. A graduate of Del Oro, Clark-Crets was president of the Loomis Basin Chamber of Commerce from 1999 to 2001. She was recently appointed to a seat on the Planning Commission for the Town of Loomis. “This is where I want to be for the rest of my life,” Clark-Crets said.
