INDIAN WELLS ARTS FESTIVAL

Where fine art beckons and cultural beauty blooms

By Alison Elsner The 16th Annual Indian Wells Arts Festival is set to bloom with an explosion of color and character, inviting guests to enjoy three days of sensory delights during Easter weekend. Over 200 Artists from 60 major museums and 25 countries will once again transform the luxurious Indian Wells Tennis Garden into a showcase of thousands of one-of-a-kind works of art.

Artistic attractions will encompass 31 categories such as painting, sculpture, jewelry, wearableart fashion, photography and ceramics, ideal for serious buyers and collectors as well as those just looking to infuse some beauty

and balance into their daily lives.

There will be a Gourmet MarketPlace featuring artisan fare such as organic bath and body confections and epicurean oils and vinegars. Artist demonstrations will include glassblowing, a 2,000 year-old Zapotec Indian textile weaving technique, potterythrowing and a kid’s palette-knife painting class.

Artist Carolyn Johnson of Laguna Niguel, California, has been selected as the Festival’s 2018 Featured Artist and has created an original painting for this year’s Commemorative Print. Johnson developed an entirely new technique called pastel fusion to produce “Midnight Bloom,” a mixed media painting measuring three

by four and a half feet. Both the original painting and its posters will be available for purchase.

Attendees can also immerse themselves in the sounds of live music and entertainment including headliner world-guitar super group Incendio, L.A.’s funky organ trio Rumproller, Vibhas Kendzia playing his native flute and keyboard and the Coachella Valley Youth Ensemble Program.

A Saturday and Easter Sunday “Eggs + Champagne in the Garden” brunch menu until noon both days presents foodie favorites along with the ever-popular Oasis Bar and Champagne Circle bars serving up savory spirits.

The Festival is ranked in the top 100 fine art and fine craft shows

in the nation by Sunshine Artist Magazine, Greg Lawler Art Source Review and the American Bus Association.

The event incorporates local charity partners including the Cathedral City High School’s DATA Digital Imaging Apple Distinguished Program, Christopher’s Clubhouse and SafeHouse of the Desert, among others. Admission for adults is $13 per day, and children are free.

– C.A. in Louisiana ￭ Here’s a nifty trick to store lots of sunglasses using two thumbtacks and a length of ribbon.

Keep your ribbon no longer than 10 inches, and tack it up to the wall in a taut horizontal line.

Then slip one arm of the sunglasses behind the ribbon. Instant display and easy access. ￭ Keep charger cords from fraying by slipping on a spring from an ink pen. You also can cut a straw in half and make a slit down the side.

Then slip the straw over your charging cord. ￭ Dried-out markers are the worst, but they don’t have to be. Refresh your dried-out washable markers with a little marker therapy -- something that your kids can do! Dip a dried marker into a very small amount of water -- just enough that it takes up the water rather than coloring it. Then wrap the tip with a small piece of plastic wrap, and recap. Let set for an hour or so, then repeat until refreshed. You can do the same with permanent markers using alcohol rather than water. ￭ “I love bumper stickers, but hate the look of an old, faded, peeling tableau on the back of my ride. When I get a bumper sticker I like, I apply it to a sheet magnet found at craft stores. Then I cut out and slap it on. Social Security Matters

“Ask Rusty” - Social Security, Military Pension and Disability Dear Rusty: I am 61 years old. I have a disability rating from the VA and I draw a military pension for my years of service. How might my disability rating and my military pension affect my Social Security? Signed: Disabled Vet Dear Disabled Vet: First of all, thank you for your service to our country. Your military pension will not affect your future Social Security benefit in any way, since military pay for service after 1957 contributed to and participated in the Social Security program. In other words, you paid Social Security “FICA” taxes from your military earnings during your years of service, and your earnings during those years contributed toward the 35 years which will be used to determine your Social Security benefit amount. So when you finally decide to apply for Social Security (you must be at least 62 to apply for retirement benefits) you need not worry about any reductions as a result of receiving your military service pension.

Similarly, your Veterans Administration disability rating will not affect your Social Security retirement benefit. But, for your awareness, depending upon the extent of your disability you may be eligible for Social Security Disability

Insurance (SSDI) benefits in addition to your military pension and in lieu of regular Social Security benefits. You can get SSDI benefits before your normal eligibility age of 62, and they are paid instead of regular Social Security retirement benefits up to your full retirement age, which for you is 66 years and 6 months. Then, at your full retirement age, SSDI benefits will automatically convert to regular Social Security retirement benefits. Note that, if awarded, your SSDI benefit may be more than your early retirement benefit if, for example, you claimed your retirement benefit as soon as you became eligible at age 62.

Even though you have a VA disability rating, to get SSDI benefits you would still need to satisfy Social Security’s own definition of “disability” and meet their other eligibility requirements. But if your disability prevents you from working and is expected to last for more than a year, it is surely worth investigating. While it is possible to apply for SSDI benefits online, we recommend you contact your local Social Security office (find it at www.ssa.gov/locator), make an appointment and apply in person.

too that while it doesn’t guarantee approval, if your VA disability rating is “100% Permanent & Total”, Social Security may provide you with expedited processing of your SSDI application. And you don’t have to wait until you are 62 to apply for and collect Social Security disability benefits. Once again, thank you for your military service.

Mile high laundry club?

A woman aboard a long-haul flight from Turkey to Moscow surprised fellow passengers recently aboard a Ural Airways passenger jet when she decided to dry her underwear in the air vent above her seat. Presumably she had rinsed out the aforementioned unmentionable and required a 20-minute blow dry, according to the Association of Mature American

Citizens [AMAC]. A witness told reporters after landing in Moscow that passengers “looked with surprise and bewilderment, but all were silent.”

Grumpy Cat wins the day

For all you cat lovers: cat commercial icon, Grumpy Cat, was not just grumpy, she was downright livid about an advertiser’s unauthorized use of her image. And so she, and her owners, sued and won her case, says the Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC]. She received a $700,000 judgment in a U.S. District Court in California against a company that used the famous feisty feline’s image in ads without permission. The complaint filed with the

court read, in part: “Ironically, while the world-famous feline Grumpy Cat and her valuable brand are most often invoked in a tongue-and-cheek fashion, Defendants’ despicable misconduct here has actually given Grumpy Cat and her owners something to be grumpy about.”

It can be a bit of a shock for many of us when we reach the half-century mark and start getting the invitations to join AARP. We wonder what AARP stands for, and are a bit annoyed to learn that it stands for American Association of Retired Persons. Retiring at age 50? We’d love that, but barring a large trust fund, how many of us get to retire at that age?

If we do sign up and pay the annual $16 fee, we then get more mailings, many with stacks of discounts.

A show of hands, please. How many of us actually go through the stack of discount offers and immediately start using them at age 50? A poll of people down at the senior center says that age 60 is when we’re more likely to actually flash the AARP card and ask for discounts. Once actual retirement arrives and budgets are tight, yes, then we want every extra benefit and saved dollar we can get.

At the same time, many of those discounts are available just for asking at restaurants and other places we spend money.

Having said all this, is AARP worth joining? The answer is yes. While we often can get discounts on our own, we can’t do all the lobbying in Washington, D.C. to help protect out interests. We can’t access all the political offices it can, keeping our issues front and center. The AARP is, first and foremost, an advocacy group.

EGG-ACTLY RIGHT FOR EASTER

During the Easter season, hardcooked eggs act as a creative canvas for children and adults to decorate. Using natural food dyes to color eggs became popular during medieval times. English kings distributed hundreds of decorated, gold-leaf eggs during Easter. Russian Czar Alexander took this holiday custom to high art when he commissioned the famous Faberge eggs as a gift for his wife, the Empress Maria, from goldsmith Peter Carl Faberge.

For the perfect, hard-cooked eggs for your Easter holiday, follow the directions below.

Happy Easter!

PERFECT EASTER EGGS 1. Bring eggs to room temperature.

2. Place eggs in room temperature water in a large pot.

3. Bring to a boil, then turn down to a low boil for 12 minutes.

4. Quickly chill the eggs in icecold water.

5. To decorate successfully, the eggs must be completely cool and dry.

6. Hard-cooked eggs should be kept refrigerated and used within one week.

NOTE: The greenish color around the yolk of hard-cooked eggs is a natural result of sulfur and iron reacting at the surface of the yolk. It may occur when eggs are cooked too long or at too high a temperature, or when there is a high amount of iron in the cooking water. Although the color may be unappealing, the eggs are still wholesome and nutritious, and their flavor is unaffected.

Greenish yolks can best be avoided by using the proper

cooking time and temperature (avoid intense boiling), and by rapidly cooling the cooked eggs.

Occasionally, scrambled eggs can develop a greenish tint if they are overcooked at too high a temperature or left too long in a metal pan.

Decorating Tips: 1. Use crayons to gently color a design on the hard-cooked Easter eggs. If you want to dye the crayon-decorated eggs, the crayon wax will resist the dye and the design will show through.

2. You also can decorate the eggs with craft supplies, buttons, sequins, glitter, beads, ribbons and pieces of felt or stickers.

Use white or craft glue to attach the materials.

3. To make your own dye: Combine 1/2 to 1 tablespoon of food coloring with 2 teaspoons of white distilled vinegar in a large cup or deep bowl. You can experiment by mixing the food coloring to create a variety of hues. Add water until the cup or bowl is half full.

4. Gently place the eggs into the dying liquid in the cup or bowl using a soup spoon to avoid cracking the shell. The longer the eggs are left in the dye, the darker the color will become.

5. When the egg is the desired color, remove it from the dye, pat it dry with a paper towel and place it back into the egg carton or on an egg-holder. Refrigerate until ready to use.

Corporal: Terrier, Adult, Male Hi, everyone! My name is Corporal and I’m a male Terrier mix who’s about 4 years old. I’m a medium-sized dog and I weigh over 20 pounds. My coat is a beautiful combination of brown, beige, rust, and black. I have a white chest that blends very well with everything else. I make a very handsome appearance and my eyes are one of the most striking features about me–they’re deep amber and are gorgeous!

I came to Pet Rescue because my owner passed away. I miss him a lot as I had a home of my own. But, life goes on and I’m treated very well

and making many new friends here.
