Yes, there is a need for it. However, it seems we have taken our love for plastic just a little too far.

I heard Britain’s Prime Minister Theresa May, recently pledged to eliminate avoidable wastes within 25 years. This includes plastic bags (in ALL stores), straws and even products that have micro-beads of plastic in them. This made me

In my research, I found at the end of 2017, China put restrictions on what recyclable products they will accept. China’s

ban covers imports of 24 kinds of solid waste, including unsorted paper and the low-grade polyethylene terephthalate used in plastic bottles, as part of a broad cleanup effort and a campaign against “yang laji,” or “foreign garbage.”

waste paper, metals and used plastic — 7.3 million tons in 2016, according to recent industry data. Last July, China notified the World Trade Organization that it intended to ban some imports of trash, saying the action was needed to protect the environment and improve public health. Now, because of this ban, Britain as well as other countries, including ours, are finding recyclables piling up.

The United States exports more than 13.2 million tons of scrap paper and 1.42 million tons of scrap plastics annually to China. This information comes from the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries. This is the sixth-largest American export to China so as you

Simon Ellin, chief executive of the Recycling Association in Britain said, “We’ve got to start producing less and we’ve got to produce better-quality recyclable goods.”

Too often, he said, manufacturers produce environmentally harmful products and then “pass the buck” to retailers, who in turn pass it to local councils to pick up the tab to sort out the waste for recycling.

“What’s happened is that the final link in the supply chain has turned around and said: ‘No, we’re not going to take this poor-quality stuff anymore. Keep it for yourself.'”

As a society, we need to pay attention to the products we are buying and what is in them.

I was at a local store where a man ahead of me purchased two products he could easily hold in his hand. When asked if he wanted a bag he said no, then thought for a second, asked if he had to pay. The answer was no so he said sure, I’ll take the bag. I asked him if he would consider not taking the plastic bag and in a kind way, said “plastic is the enemy!” Crazy, I know, but his answer was even crazier (in my opinion) which was “the air we breathe can kill us, what’s a plastic bag going to do?”

Of course, I let it go at that but was disappointed in what I had heard.

One bag makes a big difference when there are hundreds of thousands of people. Plastic is found in so many places it needn’t be, and it doesn’t break down. These are some of the not-so fantastic facts about plastic. I hope you can find ways to save from buying items that unnecessarily use plastic this week, and every week.

Comparative ways to seal asphalt driveways Dear Barry:

When we bought our house, our home inspector reported that the asphalt driveway was cracked and worn. He said the pavement would last longer if we would have it sealed. After moving in, we got bids from three paving companies and were surprised at the wide range of prices and the selection of sealants. One contractor recommended oil based sealant. The low bidder said that slurry is just as good. If that's not confusing enough, my neighbor said I can do the job myself for half the price of the lowest bid.

We’d love to save money on the job, as long as the quality doesn't suffer.

What do you advise, and does it matter if we let it remain as is?

When this happens, the moistened ground beneath the pavement becomes soft. As cars and trucks drive over the surface, further cracking occurs, shortening the useful life of the pavement. To prevent this kind of damage, sealant is needed.

Three types of sealant are commonly used to resurface asphalt driveways: oil base, coal tar, and water-based slurry. The type most often applied by do-it-yourselfers is slurry, an asphalt and cement mixture that can be applied like paint, using a roller or broom. This method is relatively simple and inexpensive, but slurry is not the material of choice if you're seeking a long-lasting, high-quality seal.

Slurry is lower in oil

content than the other sealants. It tends to dry out, crack, and peel within one to two years of application. This means that resealing is needed at more frequent intervals than with other types of asphalt sealer, and once slurry begins to peel, it provides poor adhesion for subsequent applications of sealant.

Coal tar sealant is probably the most effective product for preventing water penetration into asphalt pavement, but its position in the marketplace has been challenged because of environmental concerns. This is unfortunate because coal tar sealants are the most durable and long lasting of asphalt sealants.

These products are a mixture of coal tar, sand, clay, polymers, and other additives that make them pliable and long lasting. They are also unaffected by gasoline and oil spills.

In some states coal tar sealants are no longer available and have even been banned in Califor-

nia and New York.

This leaves oil-based sealer, which is preferred over slurry because it achieves better penetration and adhesion to old, rough asphalt surfaces and is a longer lasting solution, usually lasting

four to six years, depending upon weather conditions.

Resealing asphalt driveways the do-ityourself way is better than doing nothing at all, but professional application of oil-based

sealant is the preferred way to prolong the useful life of your driveway.

5 tips for speed cleaning before hosting

W

hat is one of the biggest sou rces of stress? It’s cleaning on a deadline, especially when guests are on their way.

But with the right plan in place, even last-minute cleaning can be efficient and stressfree, said Debra Johnson, Merry Maids home cleaning expert.

In an online survey conducted by Toluna, more than half of respondents admitted that most of their cleaning takes place just before guests arrive.

With a bit more focus, this preparation can be quick and effective, without stress. After all, parties shouldn’t be a race against the clock; they’re about spending time with friends and family.

Johnson shared the following tips to clean smarter, not harder, in the limited time you have before guests arrive.

1. Ready, set ... declutter The important first step is to declutter rooms. Set a timer if needed to help you stay on track and avoid spending too much time in one room. Put things where they belong, or if they don’t have a home, put them in a room or under beds where no one will see. Save decluttering t hose hidden s t or a g e a r e a s f or l a t e r.

All you need to clean your bathroom quickly is a damp microfiber cloth to give every surface a quick wipe-down and a toilet brush to clean the inside walls of the toilet. To freshen it up even more, pour a half-cup of baking soda into the toilet bowl and add white vinegar along with a few drops of your favorite essential oils. Allow the mixture to bubble for a bit and scrub with a toilet brush. Suddenly your bathroom is clean, shiny and smelling great.

5. Tackle the microwave mess

Dinner parties shouldn’t be a race against the clock to clean your home; it’s all about spending time with friends and family.

Prioritize rooms you use most, so if you run out of time, guests won’t notice an untidy area.

2. Only clean what guests will see Join the more than one-third of Americans who don’t bother cleaning rooms people won’t see. You have enough to stress about as the host. Don’t waste your precious time cleaning parts of the home no one will

ever see. Simply shut doors to rooms that you want to keep private, signaling to guests not to enter. If you have family staying with you, give guest rooms a once-over, clean the bathrooms that will be used and, of course, the kitchen and living room.

3. Skip the sweep Don’t spend time sweeping with a dry mop when you can

vacuum instead. Vacuuming is far more efficient and faster at removing dust, dirt and other debris from the floors. Keep a portable hand-held vacuum nearby in case of a big mess, like a glass breaking during a party.

Within seconds, the mess will be gone and you can go back to enjoying the festivities.

4. Speed-clean the bathrooms

You know people will want seconds well after the leftovers are put away, so use this tip to tackle microwave build-up: Combine lemon juice and water in a microwave-safe bowl and run it for about two minutes. The lemon water will loosen any gunk or food in the microwave for an easy wipe down with a microfiber cloth.

Now guests can reheat their leftovers in a clean microwave.
