Northern California’s largest open produce market launches entertainment venue

hen Jim and Marilee Denio of Roseville first started selling produce out of the back of a truck by Atkinson Street and Vineyard Road, it didn’t go especially well.

The year was 1947, the city’s population was close to 7,000, and sales were slow.

As their granddaughter Tracie Denio tells it, “Let’s give it one more month,” they said, in case sales picked up.

Seventy-one years later, Denio’s is the largest flea market in Northern California, spanning nearly 75 acres with parking, in a city pushing 135,000.

Besides a produce market spanning the length of two football fields, the weekend-only operation hosts concession stands, eateries and more than 900 retail vendors peddling everything from clothes and rugs to beauty products, lawn mowers, guitars, water fountains, China dolls, power tools, cacti and piñatas.

New this year is the addition of Market Plaza Live, a 30,000-square-foot live-entertainment area in the open exes with a fully covered 16-by-32-foot main stage, sound system and picnic tables over grassy turf. The venue had a soft opening Feb. 18 and a “Carnaval” Mardi Gras event the following Sunday featuring Metalachi, a mariachi band that plays heavy metal.

Live music or DJs are planned to appear every week from now on.

Tracie, who co-manages the market with her brother, Eric Denio and father, Ken Denio, said the plaza was meant to answer a question she heard frequently from customers — “Do you do concerts or events?”

The Denios want to provide something for all ages, because all ages have been good to them.

According to its website, Denio’s by the early 1960s was the biggest market of its kind in California. Having been open only Saturdays up that point, in 1969 it started opening on Sundays too, and business grew in the 1970s and 80s with new weekend vendors from throughout the region selling all manner of merchandise.

the world, vendor Diane Howe said she’d seen a change in clientele and the agriculture aspect in her 33 years at the market.

“Back in ‘85, it was not nearly as culturally diverse. And it was different — there used to be an auction yard across the street with cattle and stuff, and now we just have chickens every first and third week,” she said. “I think (the stage) is a great idea to bring more clientele into the market, because hopefully people will stay.”

Folsom resident Sam Solima, watching a group called Project 4 Band play a cover of Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk” Feb. 18 on the new stage, said live music might bring her to Denio’s more often.

“It’s the first time they’ve had a band.

That’s something new,” she said. “The Bay Area (markets) have them … It’s kind of cool to sit here and listen to music.”

continued from page 9 Tracie believes that in the era of internet shopping, the value of Denio’s is holistic. The experience of the place is what Denio’s is trying to sell today, to the extent that its new marketing slogan is “experience Denio’s differently.”

“Where else can you grab a corndog and a beer and walk the aisles and shop and people-watch? You’re having an experience. It’s not just shopping,” Tracie said. “When (people) want to get out with family and friends, we want to provide a location where they can do that and enjoy the diversity that our market brings.”

For her brother Eric, the operations manager, the market’s foundational experience is bargain shopping with your own two hands.

“It’s nice to be able to go to a place physically,” he said. “I think people look forward to going under the tables and looking in the mystery boxes to find goodies.”

And there’s enough help on hand to

keep the public browsing for decades.

Taking the long view, Tracie sees her role as being a temporary steward of a multi-generational operation. Between her and her own six kids, her brother and his three, and extended family, she said they’re caretakers of a business they hope will outlast them.

“I feel blessed that I came into it when I did. My brother and I have always had an

interest in it,” she said. “We have worked outside of the company as well, so we’ve had outside experience, we’ve got college, but we always have come back to it because we were raised in it. We just appreciate and see the hard work that my grandparents put into this place. This was their baby … and we don’t think of it as ours. We just think of it as a legacy that we are carrying forward.”

Rabbi Nissan Mangel’s quip about surviving his infamous captor in Auschwitz earned rapturous applause Jan. 31 from 1,200 people who had gathered to hear him speak in Roseville.

He was referring to Josef Mengele — not to be confused with the rabbi’s own similar last name — a German SS officer and physician who came to be known as the “angel of death” for his role in the Holocaust, deciding which prisoners would work and which would be sent to the gas chambers.

Addressing a full house Jan. 31 at the Placer County Fairgrounds, Mangel, who at 10 years old was Auschwitz’ youngest prisoner, regaled the crowd with a tale of hope and survival. He knew it by heart,

having lived it, written it down and retold it countless times in public.

A renowned speaker, the New York resident was invited by Rabbi Yossi Korik and the Chabad Jewish Community Center of Placer County to share his story with a new generation.

Korik said this was the seventh consecutive year the local Chabad House had brought a Holocaust survivor to speak in Placer County, but attendance this year doubled the previous record. He credited Halldin Public Relations with helping spread the word.

For Mangel, aside from Korik’s persistence in asking him to come, what finally prompted him to make the journey was the timeliness of his own message CONTINUED ON PAGE 14

“People think they can commit anything, and as long as they’re not caught, it’s OK … You can cheat, you can lie, you can bluff and so on,” Mangel told The Press Tribune before taking the stage.

He said this belief is divorced from ethics and morality, and humanity divorced from those things “doesn’t work.”

“My message I’d like to convey is, (even if ) the police won’t catch you, you’ll eventually be caught by the eye who sees,” he said. “Hitler and Nazi Germany thought they could do whatever they want.”

Mangel prefaced his talk with a few words about having his faith strengthened, rather than distorted or undone, by personal traumas. He said his survival was miraculously unlikely, and he spent the better part of two hours recounting why.

He said German soldiers shipped him to Auschwitz by cattle car with his sister, parents and more than 4,000 other Jews from Slovakia and Krakow. He gave firsthand accounts of well-known aspects of the camp — prisoners separated from their families, stripped of all personal belongings, barely sustained by tiny rations of moldy bread, toiling under a winter sun obscured by smoke from the crematorium.

Other prisoners were not so lucky, executed en masse or in brutal and spectacular ways in front of their families.

The first time he met Mengele, the “angel of death,” the 10-year-old Mangel amused the doctor by bluffing, claiming to be 70. The doctor spared him the fate of others his age, who were killed for being too young to work, and sent the boy to work with his family.

a list of such moments, of unlikely deliverance over and over again: antibiotics in mold that helped him survive; scarlet fever that gave him desperate fearlessness to defy Mengele when he proposed a medical experiment; a comforting vision to sustain him through the “death march” back to Germany, and then a friend, and then a merciful soldier who

Mangel believes was an angel. “An angel in an SS uniform,” he said.

By the time he was liberated by the U.S. Army on May 5, 1945, Mangel was so weak he nearly died choking on chewing gum.

His mother and sister reunited after the war as well. His father died in Germany.

hudis Davidson, a Pittsburg native who came to Placer County to teach Jewish preschool for the year, told The Press Tribune it was something she’d remember.

“He was able to prove the point that you can still believe in God fully and truly, even after the Holocaust,” she said.

Another audience member, Robert Postar of Rancho Cordova, felt inspired. He said Mangel’s account hit home.

“I’m Jewish, and my … distant family from Czechoslovakia were wiped out,” he said. “It’s very important to hear the story of the survivors, and also to make sure that the people who did this, who committed these crimes, are also held accountable … It’s probably what motivated me to become a lawyer.”

As hundreds filtered out the back doors, dozens more surrounded Mangel for autographs, photos and handshakes.

Perhaps they knew they’d be among the last to hear about the Holocaust from one who survived it.

About 1,200 people filled The Grounds, formerly called Placer County Fairgrounds, on Jan. 31 to hear a Holocaust survivor share his story.

continued from page 16 The Granite Bay resident does this work out of her garage, keeping an eye on her two miniature horses, Annie Oakley and Pegasus, to make sure they don’t knock over any of the finished work she’s shelved near the doors. At first glance, the pitchers, potters, bowls and cups look incomplete, like they’re drying in the morning air, awaiting a glaze before emerging vibrant from the kiln.

But peering closer, Moriarty’s style reveals itself. There’s a sheen on the pieces, which feature Indian-inspired motifs stamped over and over and over on the edges, creating something simple and cyclical, textured and tactile. Some pieces use color — modest bits of black or cobalt blue, a splash of pink or green to bring out a flower — but it’s sparing and only when Moriarty deems it necessary.

Hailing from Bainbridge Island, just east of Seattle in Washington’s Puget Sound, Moriarty’s interest in pottery began at age 7 when her mother signed her up for a class.

“I liked it and was good at it,” she says.

“You have to be determined ... There’s a lot of follow-through. You can’t just throw one good pot.”

Now, at 51, the mother of two is still fi-

nessing the weight and size of her creations, punching holes and pressing stamps until every piece is where it needs to be.

That said, she doesn’t agonize and her work is far from fussy. Moriarty studied at the California College of the Arts, majoring in ceramics and textiles, but considers herself more of a craftsman than an artist. After all, she points out, pottery was essential to nearly every culture at one point in time. The same could be said of other trades, like blacksmithing, weaving and carpentry.

“I’m not like the fancy oil painter who works for the king,” she said.

Instead, her philosophies are downto-earth — literally. When she’s not turning clay, Moriarty cares for nine sheep, five goats, two pigs and the two horses on five acres she and her kids call Rancho de Amor.

Whether installing fence posts or turning a coffee mug, Moriarty seems to base her life on the ground beneath her feet.

She even sells plots of earth as a real estate agent, though she’s taken a break to raise her children.

These days, pottery is a family affair.

Moriarty is teaching her son to throw pots and her daughter helps stamp pieces. Her kids accompany her to shows and

Moriarty said she hadn’t sold her work before this year but now has an Etsy shop and plans to run a demo at High Hand Gallery in Loomis this April. Overall, she’s surprised at how well her pottery is doing.

Still, the dreams from this point forward remain grounded, in Moriarty’s trade and her day-to-day life. She plans to add chickens and geese to the farm-animal family and keep turning practical, simple pieces like she’s done for the past 44 years.

“My talent is not high art,” she says. “I want to make things people will use ... and break, so they’ll come get a new one.”

Marshall Gold Discovery Park peeks into a pivotal past t Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park, the story goes like this: James Marshall, a New Jersey migrant helping John Sutter build a sawmill near in Coloma, saw a glint in the mill’s tailrace on a cold morning in January 1848. When he plucked a thumbnail-sized gold nugget from the water, Marshall forever changed the course of history for California.

But first, he had to check.

Knowing that pyrite, or fool’s gold, would break upon impact, Marshall struck the nugget with a rock. It bent — a promising start. Still unsure whether it was copper,

Marshall took the piece to Jennie Wimmer, a housekeeper in camp, who tested the piece overnight in a pot of lye soap to see if the nugget’s shine disappeared. In the morning, the piece had retained its glimmer, indicating Marshall had struck gold.

Marshall’s discovery was documented in a crew member’s journal, marking a point in history when the door swung wide open for tens of thousands of “49ers” in search of California’s geological bounty.

Various sources estimate 300,000 prospectors came to the state from all over the world — China, Europe, South America, Mexico and other places — between 1848 and 1858.

BRIDGING PAST AND PRESENT

Today, according to volunteer coordinator Jerrie Beard, the area still draws tens of thousands of people, many of whom are fourth graders on field trips learning about California history. Beard, who’s worked with the park since 2012, said about 80,000 kids visit each year with their schools, coming from as far away as San Diego and Los Angeles to witness what’s left of this exciting era.

Inside the historical complex, which includes churches, cabins, a blacksmith shop, a cemetery and a replica of the mill Sutter and Marshall built, there’s plenty to do in a day. Beard said guests can even pan for gold along the river for a fee, though it’s “hands and pans” only, no shovels allowed.

“Most people walk away with a couple little flecks,” she said.

The park runs two tours every day at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., which address various aspects of the gold discovery. Inside a historic stone building, visitors can learn about the different mining techniques used in the area. Another building houses wagons that gold rush prospectors would have used to travel across treacherous mountain passages in the hopes of reaching a dream.

BEYOND HISTORY

The park doesn’t stop at exhibits, tours and demonstrations. According to Beard, the state owns 576 acres in the area. Not all of it is traversable, of course, given elevation gain and natural preservation. But the Monroe Ridge Trail, about 3.5 miles long, runs through much of it, taking hik-

ers up a series of switchbacks and back down into camp.

On the ups and downs, the trail is narrow and steep, with signs at either end warning of recent mountain lion sightings. Hikers should also be aware of ticks, rattlesnakes and poison oaks. But along Monroe Ridge, at about 1,120 feet above sea level, hikers can stop at the top and take in a view of the valley below, a blue American River running through it.

Beard said the area is also popular among kayakers, who launch their boats at North Beach along Highway 49. Picnickers and dog-walkers frequent the area, though campers can use sites in Coloma and Placerville, rather than setting up inside the park.

Though the discovery of gold was a prosperous time for some, exhibits in the park’s small museum address the era’s grim realities, especially the gold rush’s effect on native Miwok and Nisenan populations: disease, conflict, pollution and competition with settlers for resources.

Today, the park has an area dedicated to the Nisenan and Miwok, including a replica of their dwellings and a preserved “chaw-se”, an outcropping where women ground acorns for food.

Aspects of the park also address the importance of Chinese workers, who made up a significant portion of Coloma after hearing about the gold it harbored.

The contributions of different cultures continue on in the park’s “Living History Days.” Once a month, visitors can learn about groups of people who influenced the gold rush, whether Italians or the Irish, African Americans or Latin Americans. Diverse populations helped shape the Golden State, just as Marshall shaped

the gold nugget he found, pounding on a river rock.

“This is a starting point of modern-day California,” Beard said. “People from all over the world came to California to try to strike it rich … I think that’s how California started to be the way it is, the melting pot. It started with the gold rush.”

Residents express concern while developer defends residential projects, which would occupy over 51 acres south of Douglas Boulevard

ave Cook had just spent an hour listening to concerns from residents about two projects that could develop some of the last open space in Granite Bay. Cook’s projects, Whitehawk I and II, would create 79 residential units on two vacant parcels totaling 51.37 acres south of Douglas Boulevard. Roughly half the land would be designated open space, with lot sizes for the units ranging from 9,000 to 15,000 square feet, well below the one and two-acre lots commonly found in Granite Bay. At a meeting Feb. 13 at the Granite Bay Branch Library to discuss the project’s environmental impact report, residents expressed concerns over traffic, whether the development was a good fit for Granite Bay and more. But standing outside the library, Cook didn’t seem fazed.

“I would say they’re all things I’ve heard before and that we’ve designed the project and made significant efforts to deal with edge conditions,” Cook said.

Few people spoke favorably of the project at the meeting, which was held at 2

p.m. on a Thursday but still drew a crowd of roughly 20 to 30 people.

“I look at this as an assault on the character of Granite Bay,” said Jennifer Derich, an Orangevale resident. “It is something that is only being considered for the profiteering of the persons who are applying for this. It is denigrating an entire open space that was designed to be there that makes it an equestrian community.”

The Granite Bay Municipal Advisory Council voted 3-2 in August 2016 to recommend the project to the Placer Coun-

ty Planning Commission, according to a website for local activist group Defend Granite Bay. The MAC’s vote did far from greenlight the project, with project planners subsequently opting for a full EIR to address traffic and wetland concerns.

Residents still had unanswered questions at the Feb. 13 meeting, such as Granite Bay resident Cheryl Berkema, who was dismayed the EIR won’t include some data project planners deemed insignificant, such as figures from a population study.

ed and we’re close to our maximum,” Berkema said.

Placer County Senior Planner Christopher Schmidt disputed Berkema’s suggestion that Granite Bay couldn’t take on additional residents or developments.

“There’s a misconception that there’s a population cap in Granite Bay,” Schmidt said.

Schmidt’s assurance did little, however, to warm residents about denser land zoning, which Whitehawk would require and which has been a trend with projects since Granite Bay adopted its latest community plan in 2012. Late in the meeting, resident Jane Negri said she sensed that the audience wanted no rezoning for Whitehawk, which drew a “yes” from the crowd.

The project could be a ways off from coming to fruition, with the environmental report still not finalized or available in draft form and Cook saying Whitehawk would likely “not be done and approved quickly enough to start construction in 2019.”

Some Granite Bay residents have expressed concern in recent years about developers and county officials pushing proj-

ects that clash with the community plan.

“I’ve heard that so many times,” Cook said. “That’s people who have their paranoia or their conspiracy theory who aren’t familiar with the process. If they’ve been through it, they would understand that’s not how it works.”

Cook continued, “You have to demonstrate to the planning commission, who are not elected. Then you have to demonstrate to five members of the board of supervisors that you are addressing community plan policies and you are meeting the CEQA standards. That’s the process.”

CEQA, or the California Environmental Quality Act, has been the basis since 2016 for lawsuits over Granite Bay projects The Park, Ovation Senior Living and Treelake Storage. While none of the plaintiffs have halted construction thus far, Cook acknowledged that Whitehawk might also eventually wind up in court.

“Because it’s infill, irrespective of the controversy … or the position of folks in terms of whether it’s a change of the plan or a change in their lifestyle, the reality is with CEQA, we’re likely to get sued,” Cook said.

An environmental impact report is underway for Whitehawk I and II, with residents concerned about traffic and other impact of bringing 79 densely packed units to the site.

A spring-fed pond and 2.6 acres—this is what Granite Bay resident Tracey Booth gets to take in every day living in the Spring Valley Ranchos neighborhood.

t first glance, standing in Granite Bay resident Tracey Booth’s dining room, it looks like she lives on a golf course. Green stretches out from the open patio doors until the grass hits the tree line, with a spring-fed pond in the back.

Booth’s property in the Spring Valley Ranchos neighborhood is a far cry from where she came from, her husband’s native Southern California.

“We lived on a tiny postage-stamp lot in a house that looked like everyone else’s,” Booth says.

But here, her lot and home are neither tiny nor ordinary. Instead, she describes it as “old and funky,” set apart from places like Los Lagos that people typically associate with Granite Bay. Built in 1969, her home has retained

quirks from previous owners: expansions, unconventional paint jobs, walls knocked out, walls put in. The Booths have lived there since January 2013 and are still putting their own touches on the home.

And in a neighborhood where the homeowner’s association meets once a year and exists solely to maintain Spring Valley Ranchos’ two short streets, homeowners like Booth can make changes as they please. There’s no need to run paint shades or landscaping styles by a committee. Some of the neighborhood’s 22 residents have accents in their yards as well, including horse pens, a vineyard, creeks, ponds, bridges, even a miniature train.

Resident Carolyn Nichols’ property is two and a half acres, big enough to hold a garden full of watermelons, tomatoes and corn.

According to Nichols, who is the HOA’s treasurer and a 26-year resident, a third of the neighborhood are original homeowners and Spring Valley Ranchos has a very low turnover.

“Everybody stays until they can’t,” Booth says.

For Booth and Nichols, the neighbors are one reason they’ve stuck around.

Booth says her fellow residents are helpful without being overbearing, respectful of privacy but still kind.

Nichols recalls the neighborhood’s swift action when a tree fell in the narrow, one-lane road a few years ago. The homeowners weren’t home at the time, she says, but everyone jumped into action anyway, grabbing chainsaws and firing up their tractors.

“There were no questions, no discussion. We all pitched in,” Nichols says.

Booth and Nichols also like the serenity of Spring Valley Ranchos’ wideopen spaces. Since the neighborhood is outside the Sacramento International Airport flight path, according to Booth, the whir of a plane overhead is a rare occurrence. On a February afternoon in Booth’s dining room, ducks, geese and frogs make their presence known and in the mornings, she can hear her neighbor’s horses neighing, despite the fact that they’re acres away.

But with lots of space comes lots of maintenance. According to Nichols, people’s yards are their hobbies, whether it’s caring for animals or wine grapes, or simply making sure the lawn isn’t a fire hazard.

“The ink wasn’t dry on our deed and my husband was out buying a lawnmower,” Booth says.

Still, the rural life is worth it for residents. While Spring Valley Ranchos might not be as populated or walkable as other neighborhoods in Granite Bay, and while keeping the acres green is like a second job for some, it’s often a small price to pay for privacy and peace.

“Yard work keeps you active, but there’s nothing wrong with that,” Nichols says. “It’s worth working hard to be able to live out here.”

he area we know as Granite Bay was dedicated in July 1987 by the Placer County Board of Supervisors after one of our local residents, Sandra Harris, formed a committee and worked with the Municipal Advisory Council to designate this area near Folsom Lake State Park as “Granite Bay.” Over the next couple years, a community plan was developed.

It was adopted in 1989 in order to steer development of the area and create a diverse array of lifestyle choices while preserving the rural character of the area, which has a rich history of farming and agriculture. It’s a great concept and has served the community well. It has attracted people who care deeply about the community and has given rise to a school district that is recognized for its outstanding performance.

In early 2012, the county board of supervisors adopted an update of the plan. Many, if not most, of the same elements were preserved in the revised plan. The result has been a wonderful and unique place to live in Placer County, where residents continue to work hard to maintain the character as envisioned in the community plan. It is the heart of what has lead to a truly

remarkable community with a great deal more diversity in lifestyle choices than most people realize.

What most people think of when someone says “Granite Bay” are spectacular homes in gated communities, and those are certainly a part of what Granite Bay has to offer, but only a part. In reality the lifestyle choices for housing, in this relatively small area, are quite surprising. Granite Bay offers homes in mobile parks, older homes in subdivisions without HOAs, meandering neighborhoods of larger lots with ranch-style homes, planned developments with landscaped medians and HOAs, town homes, and acreage lots with all kinds of homes on them, and families that still farm the land.

Within the framework of the housing choices and great schools is another important reason people choose to live here.

It’s the oldest rule in real estate: location, location, location.

For those seeking the outdoors, Granite Bay is snuggled up against Folsom Lake State Recreation Area with its miles of trails and outdoor opportunities including boating, nature watching, hiking, biking and horseback riding. Some neighborhoods offer direct access, while others are just minutes away.

If, on the other hand, you are looking for urban amenities like outstanding restaurants, movie theaters, and shopping, you are a short distance to the largest regional mall and other beautiful shopping centers where you can find just about anything you desire.

California and mental health REPRESENTATIVE’S VIEW |

ental illness is on the rise in California. And we are not doing nearly enough to get help to those who need it.

This epidemic affects one in 20 adults and one in 13 children, tearing at the fabric of our community in countless ways: from the silent suffering of millions to the louder impacts on crime, poverty, and a growing homeless population. Yet at least half of Californians with mental illnesses are untreated; when treatment is provided, it is often in a jail or prison; and the effectiveness of such treatment is mixed, at best.

This treatment gap is startling, because our state has made mental health funding a priority. In 2004, voters passed Proposition 63, dedicating roughly $2 billion a year on top of existing mental health spending. This revenue stream is untouchable, enshrined in the California Constitution. Yet more than a decade later, the state has little to show for it. Despite isolated examples of high-performing programs making a difference in some counties, there is scant evidence of any overall reduction in mental illness or the social problems associated with it. What went wrong?

Bureaucracy, for one. Responsibility for a statewide mental

health strategy is divided between three separate agencies, as documented by the leading government watchdog known as the Little Hoover Commission. Shared responsibility has turned into collective neglect, as no individual agency accepts leadership for evaluating programs, assisting counties, and implementing a long-term vision.

The largest of these agencies, the Department of Health Care Services (DHCS), even admitted to auditors that efforts at oversight are “not very robust.” That may be an understatement.

More than half of California’s 58 counties no longer even bother to submit their annual reports to DHCS on how they are spending mental health funds, even though the law requires this as a condition of the funding. As a result, failed programs continue, successful ones are not scaled up, and many suffering Californians fall through the cracks.

It is time for the Legislature to show leadership on this vitally important issue, rather than simply await a self-correction from the bureaucracy that will never come. That starts by removing the responsibility for oversight from DHCS, and creating an independent Mental Health Care Commissioner who is directly accountable to the Legislature, and whose sole responsibility will be effectively using mental health funds to fight the scourge of mental illness.

For the sake of millions of Californians who are suffering, we must do better.

Striving for perfection doesn’t always work.

Quite frankly, perfection is unattainable, and will always leave you falling short and feeling bad about yourself. Instead I like to remind myself of this quote: “Strive for progress, not perfection.” (Source unknown.)

Progress isn’t as exciting as perfection, but it is attainable. And progress builds upon more progress as you climb toward the accomplishment of real goals.

And yet the gap between your current body and the body you want gapes wide and deep. Any time you want progress and improvement in your life, it requires crossing over from one way of doing things to a new way. But how do you make it across?

• How do you go from 50 pounds overweight to a healthy BMI? • How do you go from a junk-food lover to a health-food lover?

• How do you go from a snooze-hitter to an early riser?

• How do you go from a couch potato to active and fit?

• How do you go from someone who talks about their goals to someone who accomplishes their goals?

SMALL DEGREES OF PROGRESS + TIME = A NEW YOU

Commit to making one small degree of progress each and every day, and over time you will arrive on the other side of that chasm, a brand new you.

Did you eat white rice with dinner yesterday? Today choose brown rice. Next week choose cauliflower rice.

Did you eat a donut for breakfast yesterday? Today eat half of a donut and a piece of fruit. Next week choose a protein bar.

Did you wake up at 7 a.m. today? Tomorrow wake up at 6:45.

Next week wake up at 6:30.

Did you sit all day today? Tomorrow walk for 15 minutes. Next week walk for 30 minutes.

And the end result, the reward, comes after you’ve made that new way of doing things a part of who you are.

We are all capable of great progress and great improvement — just not all at once.

Progress takes place one degree at a time, so don’t look to perfect fitness images on social media as your measurement of success, but rather look at your personal degrees of progress in the right direction.

Refuse the urge to compare yourself to others. The only comparison that matters is between yourself yesterday and yourself today.

Progress isn’t about finishing the race — it’s taking that next step in the right direction.

ost people think that owing a winery is a glamorous industry to be in, but when you put it in perspective, it’s a tough and expensive lifestyle.

Starting from scratch takes a huge investment. The location of your land purchase will determine the most suitable type of grape variety based on soil and weather conditions. Purchasing root stock, each vine produces on average of about one gallon of wine, so you’re looking at a lot of plantings. Besides the root stock, you will need end posts for each row, row posts to establish your trellis, irrigation systems with a drip system, pump and filters.

Then comes the hard part — waiting for that first harvest.

Over the next several years, the young vines will need lots of care and attention, including judicious watering, proper pruning, and protection from pests and disease.

Fast-forward three years. This year, the vineyard will finally produce full, delicious bunches of grapes. During this threeyear waiting period you would have established your building for production, storage, lab testing and possibly a tasting room.

Finally, for your first harvest, picking the grapes at the right time is essential. The flavor profile of the grape determines your pick date.

Beforehand, you would have purchased picking bins, a destemmer, fermentation bins, barrels, and pumps for transferring the juice into your barrels.

With the first vintage complete, another waiting period commences as your wine matures in barrels. Now it’s time to purchase bottles, corks and cartons. This could be a minimum of 12 months for red wines before you bottle your first vintage. The wine has to rest in the bottle before it can be sold. In the meantime you have designed your label and had it approved by the government authorities. Now it is up to the consumer to determine the quality of your product.

Other issues that need to be addressed are licensing and payment of appropriate taxes, depending on the alcohol level of your wine. This is a very brief summary, and there are many more issues to be addressed. As the old saying goes: How do you make a small fortune? Take a large fortune and get into establishing a winery.
