W

illkommen, Bienvenu, Welcome…to one of the most pervasive and powerful musical shows in the history of the stage. “Cabaret” is based on Roundabout Theatre Company’s Tony Award-winning production by original director Sam Mendes (“Skyfall,” “American Beauty”) and original co-director and choreographer Rob Marshall (“Into the Woods” and “Chicago,” the films). The 1972 American musical drama film was directed by Bob Fosse and starred Liza Minnelli, Michael York and Joel Grey.

Theater writer Joe Masteroff wrote the original book. John Kander is responsible for the music in collaboration with lyricist Fred Ebb. The Kander and Ebb collaboration of four decades created many Broadway standards and contemporary clas-

sics, dating back to 1965. The current production is distinguished by an impressive creative team, including B.T. Mcnicholl (director), Marine Julien (assistant director), Jennifer Werner (choreography), Robert Brill (set design), William Ivey Long (costume design) and Apex Touring (producer), among many other talents.

The story welcomes the audience to Berlin’s infamous Kit Kat Klub during the Weimar Republic in 1931, where emcee Sally Bowles and a raucous ensemble take the stage nightly to tantalize the crowd and to leave their troubles outside.

The Nazis’ violent rise is a powerful, ever-present undercurrent in the film, depicted by the change in the characters’ actions and attitudes as life in pre-WWII Germany grows more and more uncertain, masked

by a repressed shroud of decadent entertainment, gender ambiguity and sexual innuendo.

Expect to hear some of the most memorable songs in theater history, including “Cabaret,” “Willkommen” and “Maybe This Time,” as characters explore how to follow their hearts while the world loses its way.

To understand the grip this production has had on our entertainment culture, it’s worth noting that the 1972 film version won Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor (Joel Grey), Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, Best Sound, Best Original Song Score and Adaptation and Best Film Editing. It is listed as number 367 on Empire’s 500 greatest films of all time.

anadian jazz vocalist, trumpeter and songwriter Bria Skonberg is described by The Wall Street Journal as one of the “most versatile and imposing musicians of her generation.” Wielding a unique blend of modern-day pop sensibility and sizzling musicianship, Skonberg creates music that is both curious and exotic, playing with tension and storytelling.

Elite jazz chops, artfully mixed with worldly rhythms and contemporary songwriting, result in a sophisticated pop sound closely resembling that of Michael Bublé, Diana Krall and Harry Connick Jr.

Skonberg was born in British Columbia, studied piano and trumpet as a child and, in 2006, graduated from Capilano University in Vancouver with a degree in jazz trumpet.

She was the leader of Bria’s Hot Five and The Big Bang Jazz Band. She also performed with Canadian jazz veteran Dal Richards and his Orchestra in concert and on recording.

Skonberg has appeared as a band leader and guest artist at jazz festivals in North America, Europe, China and Japan. She moved to New York City in 2010 and was a co-founder of the New York Hot Jazz Festival.

his four piece Australian boy band has earned its place as one of the world’s finest pop vocal groups of the modern era.

Since their debut two decades ago, they’ve become known around the globe for their distinctive harmonies and stellar live shows.

Group members Toby Allen, Phil Burton and brothers Andrew and Mike Tierney were originally a doo-wop group, the 4 Trax, while schoolmates. After signing with Sony Music in 1996 as Human Nature, they released their debut album, “Telling Everybody.” Three of their albums have reached number

one on the ARIA Albums Charts: “Counting Down” (May 1999), “Reach Out: The Motown Record” (November 2005) and “Dancing in the Street: The Songs of Motown II” (October 2006).

Human Nature has sold over 2.5 million albums, and their Motown show played over 1,300 performances in Las Vegas. Their new show, Jukebox, in residence at the Venetian in Las Vegas, performs hits of The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Righteous Brothers and more.

A

s the featured performer for the Desert Symphony’s 29th Anniversary Gala, the recognizable and soulful singer Boz Scaggs will take the stage to deliver hits such as “Look What You’ve Done to Me,” “Jojo” and many other favorites.

Boz Scaggs’ career dates back to the late ‘60s when he sang with the Steve Miller Band on their first two albums, leading to a solo contract with Atlantic Records in 1968. During his “hit years,” 1976 through 1981, Scaggs recorded the album “Silk Degrees” which reached No. 2 on the US Billboard 200 and No. 1 in a number of other countries, spawning four hit singles: “It’s Over,” “Lowdown,” “What Can I Say” and “Lido Shuffle” as well as the poignant ballad “We’re All Alone.”

In 1988, Scaggs’ album “Other Roads” came out which featured the top-40 hit, “Heart of Mine,” and in 1994 he released the album “Some Change.” In 2003, he released “But Beautiful,” a collection of jazz standards.

In 2015, Scaggs released his album, “A Fool to Care,” which incorporates influences from Texas, Louisiana and Oklahoma, with a bit of New Orleans deftly inserted on the

title track. A compilation of mostly covers, the track includes “Whispering Pines” with Lucinda Williams and one original blues composition, “Hell to Pay,” with Bonnie Raitt.

The album rose to No. 1 on the Billboard Blues Album chart and number 54 on the Billboard 200.

This special evening will also honor Raju Mehta, owner of El Paseo Jewelers and charity champion, with the prestigious 2018 Amadeus Award. The Desert Symphony, under the musical direction of Gary Berkson, specializes in “pops” or-

chestra music, welcoming guest artists throughout their season. This performance offers audience members the option of attending the concert plus dinner or the concert only.

Scaggs and his wife, Dominique, currently operate Scaggs Vineyards in Napa Valley, California, but the singer, guitarist and musician continues to be most well-known for his powerful stage presence and confident musical style. His voice remains smooth and rhythmic with every lyric, just as Scaggs remains the arbiter of “cool.”

We can enjoy a corner patio with twinkling lights and streetside eye candy. Wines from the wide-ranging wine list are smartly planned out to pair with any number of dishes.

Nothing seems left to chance, and perhaps this is what makes for the continued allure.

Several visits in and we may find ourselves developing a pattern.

We’ll prefer arugula salad, perhaps, because we dig the way the chef allowed for the Gorgonzola cheese and

toasted walnuts to live well together on the plate. For lunch, we love that we can choose from a variety of Panini sandwiches (Panino Del Tonno stands out, though, with its albacore tuna-infused adventure.) Pastas for dinner always tempt us—why wouldn’t they with a choice of linguine, spaghetti, fettuccine or penne pasta that can be combined with meat, fish or fresh vegetables? And the ravioli—so plump, so fresh, and one lobster ravioli dish that leaves a memorable mark.

And we would never turn away an outing were we can also consider non-pasta dishes that still have that distinctly original Italian style—the veal sautéed in sweet marsala sauce and the filling chicken breast with lemon sauce stand out.

Memorable? You bet.

on’t be fooled by the size of this very quaint restaurant, wonderfully tucked aside one of the area’s more unique golf courses. It may lack in square footage, but it makes up for it with a bountiful menu. Steak lovers take note: This portal may just have the best steaks in the entire Morongo Basin. And the venue’s special Friday night prime rib stands out, too.

Lunch is a winner here with an array of offerings that include traditional

burgers, a notable veggie burger that includes a macaroni salad with a unique twist—cheddar cheese bits— and well-prepared Panini sandwiches—turkey, and ham and cheese are top sellers and arrive with baked beans. All that and a patio with a striking view and it’s hard to beat.

irba is a social place and everything from the design of its open bar to the stunning, lit patio affirms this fact. Appetizers range from something as simple yet tasty as a kale salad or a standout tomato bruschetta. Consider the Sicilian Bikini Salad and you’ll appreciate the collaboration of tuna, tomato, fresh mozzarella, carrot, corn, fennel and radicchio. Bigger plates are robust and affordable. Spaghetti Al Tonno (tuna conserva, lemon, pars-

ley, and Parmesan) or one of Birba’s popular pizzas—consider the “Egg” with pancetta, pecorino, and spring onion for $15 and the inviting Piece of the Pie—are winners. (Proceeds from the latter go to charity.) Good to know: Birba offers a cauliflower crust pizza that just nails it in the culinary department. he 16th Annual Indian Wells Arts Festival is set to bloom with an explosion of color and character, inviting guests to enjoy three days of sensory delights during Easter weekend. Over 200 Artists from 60 major museums and 25 countries will once again transform the luxurious Indian Wells Tennis Garden into a showcase of thousands of one-of-a-kind works of art.

Artistic attractions will encompass 31 categories such as painting, sculpture, jewelry, wearable-art fashion, photography and ceramics, ideal for serious buyers and collectors as well as those just looking to infuse some beauty and balance into their daily lives.

There will be a Gourmet MarketPlace featuring artisan fare such as organic bath and body confections and epicurean oils and vinegars.

Artist demonstrations will include glassblowing, a 2,000 year-old Zapotec Indian textile weaving technique, pottery-throwing and a kid’s palette-knife painting class.

Artist Carolyn Johnson of Laguna Niguel, California, has been selected as the Festival’s 2018 Featured Artist and has created an original painting for this year’s Commemorative Print. Johnson developed an entirely new technique called pastel fusion to produce “Midnight Bloom,” a mixed media painting measuring three by four and a half feet. Both the original painting and its posters will be available for purchase.

Attendees can also immerse themselves in the sounds of live music and entertainment including headliner world-guitar super group Incendio, L.A.’s funky organ trio Rumproller, Vibhas Kendzia playing

his native flute and keyboard and the Coachella Valley Youth Ensemble Program.

A Saturday and Easter Sunday “Eggs + Champagne in the Garden” brunch menu until noon both days presents foodie favorites along with the ever-popular Oasis Bar and Champagne Circle bars serving up savory spirits.

The Festival is ranked in the top 100 fine art and fine craft shows in the nation by Sunshine Artist Magazine, Greg Lawler Art Source Review and the American Bus Association.

The event incorporates local charity partners including the Cathedral City High School’s DATA Digital Imaging Apple Distinguished Program, Christopher’s Clubhouse and SafeHouse of the Desert, among others.

Admission for adults is $13 per day, and children are free.

his major championship, formerly known the Kraft Nabisco and still sometimes referred to as the Dinah Shore, is one of the five major championships of professional women’s golf, part of the LPGA Tour. opularly known as “The Dinah,” this five-day weekend getaway and music festival welcomes the lesbian and trans communities to the Coachella Valley. It’s one of the largest girl party music festivals in the world, offering a series of pool parties, nightly entertainment, live concerts by Top Ten Billboard artists, comedy shows, sport-games and social networking activities.

Launched in 1991 by founder Mariah Hanson, the gathering was named after the late Dinah Shore.

Drawing over 15,000 attendees, the festival coincides with the ANA In-

spiration golf tournament. The 2018 event will feature Opening and Closing Night Parties, Celebrity Meet and Greets, Wet and Wild Pool Party, Fifty Shades of Pink Party, Dinah Comedy Night and numerous other shows, parties and performances. Past headliners have included Meghan Trainor, Martha Davis and the Motels, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry.

The Dinah emphasizes charity support and a strong message of female empowerment. Festival passes are available for $249 per person ($500 for VIP), and individual performance and party tickets start at $30 per person.

t’s not necessary to be part of the horsey set to enjoy an evening (or afternoon) at the Tack Room Tavern, nestled within the lush grounds and gardens of the scenic Empire Polo Club.

“Tack Room” refers to the area in a stable where saddles and riding equipment are kept. This Tack Room instead features a fully stocked bar, a high-energy stage and a top-notch kitchen. Known for its rustic ambiance and friendly staff, the Tack Room is a favorite hang-out and entertainment venue for locals and visitors. There is seating inside the main bar as well as on the patio, which also provides easy access to Polo Pizza Co.

Every Thursday night, karaoke singers take over the stage from 8 p.m. until closing. On Friday and Saturday evenings, there is a powerhouse line-up of live performers from 9 p.m. to 12 midnight, with no cover. Favorite musicians include the popular Dude Jones Band with Mark Gregg, Lance Riebsomer playing pop and soul, Stereoflux offering up acoustic rock, Cinch for so Cal country…and many others. On Two-Step Tuesdays, plan for country music ranging from ballads to dance tunes, with line dancing instruction offered in between band sets. There’s even a Sunday patio band from 3 to 6 p.m.

hat’s in a name?

Edward Albee had some great ones, but none as enigmatic as “The Goat, or Who is Sylvia?,” opening at Coachella Valley Rep Wednesday, March 7, for a four-week run.

In 2002, the play won all the awards for best new play, including the Tony, Outer Critics Circle, Drama Desk and New York Drama Critics awards.

It tells the story of Martin, a successful, middle-aged architect who leads an ostensibly ideal life with his loving wife Stevie and gay teenage son Billy. However, when Martin

confides to his best friend that he is also in love with a goat named Sylvia, he sets in motion events that will destroy his family and tear his life to shreds.

Artistic Director Ron Celona said, “I wanted to present (the play) at CV Rep not only because it truly personifies this year’s creative theme of Romance, Real or Imagined, but because the play focuses on the limits of our seemingly liberal society. By revealing this family’s crisis, we, the audience, are asked to question our own moral judgment of social taboos.”

CURTAIN TIME Live Radio Show Classics Award-winning Dezart Performs returns for a fifth year with “ON THE AIR!” at Palm Springs’ Camelot Theatres at the Palm Springs Cultural Center. This one-night-only benefit transports the audience back to a fictitious radio studio in the late 1940s, complete with a cast of seasoned celebrity performers, live onstage music and sound effects.

n anticipation of the arrival of the world’s best tennis players for the BNP Paribas Open beginning March 5, the Indian Wells Tennis Garden has undergone a full-scale beautification project to emphasize the lush, green environment that makes the venue truly feel like a garden in bloom.

The project has added 62 palm trees throughout the grounds, including a grove between the two main shade structures, a row in the food village and a circle of trees in the retail area.

Additional floral installations, pavers, plants and greenery bring color and vibrancy to the venue.

Inside Stadium 1, the video walls on the north and south ends of the court were replaced and upgraded,

resulting in more than double the square footage of screens to complement the action on the court. The state-of-the-art technology will allow fans to enjoy an unparalleled experience in the world’s second largest tennis stadium.

Also new for dining at the 2018 event is local favorite Wally’s Desert Turtle, replacing Chop House in Stadium 2.

iking the Coachella Valley means waterfalls, sand dunes, oases, wildflowers and breathtaking views.

Depending on the time of the year, there is something for everyone, from strenuous and difficult to moderate and easy.

Whether it’s Joshua Tree National Park, the trails above the Tram, Indian Canyons, numerous preserves, the Mecca Hills, or the hundreds of miles of trails along the desert cities, people are flocking to catch a bit of the outdoors. Here are seven of the popular hikes, all with trailheads within a few minutes of the desert cities.

for the first mile or so and then it levels off and one gets a great view of the Indian Canyons golf courses and South Palm Canyon communities. It is a beautiful hike and ends along South Palm Canyon Drive towards Indian Canyon. You will need to have vehicles at both ends.

South Lykken Trail 4.4 miles with an elevation of just over 1,000 feet. This is considered strenuous and the north end of the trail starts at the west end of Mesquite Road, just south of downtown Palm Springs off South Palm Canyon Drive.

There is no parking at the trailhead, but street parking is available. The hike is pretty strenuous

Clara Burgess Trail 4.4 miles round trip with an elevation of 1,339 feet. The trail is the only route to the summit of Murray Hill, a prominent conical peak just south of Palm Springs. It is best seen when heading south on Gene Autry Trail and, although it is only a couple miles to the peak, it is strenuous with a steep incline.

Museum Trail 2 miles round trip with an elevation change of around 1,000 feet. This hike is quite strenuous because of the rapid incline. The trailhead is just behind the museum off Palm Canyon Drive in Downtown Palm Springs. Turn around at the picnic tables.

OUTDOORS Bump and Grind Trail 3 mile loop with an elevation rise of 523 feet. This trail is probably the most popular trail in the desert and frequented by exercisers who start behind Desert Crossings shopping center on Painters Path in Palm Desert.

Randall Henderson Trail 2.4 mile loop with a gently rising elevation change of 423 feet. This easy trail offers a good introduction to desert hiking for the novice. It starts and ends at the National Monument Visitor Center in Palm Desert on Highway 74. Check the Visitor Center for guided hikes during the winter season.

Bear Creek Oasis Trail 8 miles in and out, with an elevation rise of 1,989 feet. Considered strenuous. From the Cove Oasis trailhead at the top of La Quinta Cove, follow Bear Creek Canyon to where the trail leaves the sandy wash. Follow the signs. Hikers on this trail enjoy the beautiful palm oasis at the end.

OUTDOORS Eisenhower Peak Loop 6 mile loop with an elevation gain of 700 feet. This trail is considered moderate and is part of the Living Desert preserve (admission fee required) in Palm Desert. The trail begins at the Eastern edge of the Living Desert and takes hikers toward Eisenhower Peak. The trail is a good representation of desert terrain and makes a perfect beginning to a Living Desert tour.

However, there are several wonderful and easier trails in this area, including Garstin, Shannon, Araby (this trail goes up behind the Bob Hope home), Berns, Henderson and Goat Trails. These trails are all connected at various points and make for a great network of hiking trails. The best advice before heading towards this area is to get a map and experience the easier trails first before heading too far into the mountains. Bike Trails

The Art Smith Trail takes one through the gorgeous Santa Rosa Mountains. The Trail starts just north of the Palm Desert, near the National Scenic Area of the Santa Rosa Mountains.

Palm Canyon Trail is described as an “epic ride” because it takes you through a narrow single-track path that offers riders extreme views of forever-reaching vistas, stream beds, breathtaking ridges, sand, rocks and cacti.

The Joe Butler-Bruce Adams Trail is a mixture of an equestrian, hiking, cycling and strolling trail. This is the most versatile trail that welcomes both people and our treasured four-legged friends.

Bump and Grind Trail reaches an elevation of 1000 feet. The bike trail on this popular location leads to breath-taking views of the valley.

The Santa Rosa Mountain and Toro Peak Trail is a thirteen mile dirt road that ventures up and down the rugged peaks of the unforgettable Santa Rosa Mountains.
