Visitors can also take a jeep tour of the murals in old downtown Indio. Junior Historian actors are placed around the campus portraying our valleys trailblazers. Children can participate in old fashioned games and activities such as sack and egg races, jump rope, clothespin doll making, origami folding, Cahuilla crafts, dress-a-dolly, and Aunt Polly’s wash room. This family - oriented event is free to the community. The grounds of the museum boasts many vintage exhibits and buildings. The cen-

ter of the grounds has the 1927 Dr. Smiley-Tyler adobe home, surrounded by a complete blacksmith shop, farm equipment, the 1909 one-room Indio Public Schoolhouse and the Date Museum. The grounds also features a memorial Japanese garden, Dr. Carreon Desert Garden, Memorial Rose Garden, a working Date Garden and a Cahuilla Ethnobotanical Garden.

Social Security Matters

“Ask Rusty” - Paying FICA doesn’t change benefits Dear Rusty: I am 73 and self-employed, but each year I must pay self-employment tax—money for Social Security and Medicare—as part of my income taxes. I have been collecting Social Security since I was 62 and always hoped that my benefits might increase due to these continued FICA contributions. I guess not. Must I continue to pay this tax? Signed: Still Paying Social Security Dear Still Paying: I can understand how logic might imply that contributions you continue to make to Social Security after you start collecting benefits could increase your benefit amount, but I need to dispel that thought.

Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) payroll taxes don’t go into an individual account, which determines your benefit, so continuing to pay FICA tax doesn’t directly affect the amount of your Social Security payment. This is true whether you are an employee who pays the 6.2% Social Security tax and the 1.45% Medicare tax, or if you

are self-employed and pay both the employee and employer portion of FICA. There is no cut-off age and you must continue to pay FICA taxes as long as you are working and earning, but your Social Security benefit amount will not change because you are paying those taxes. Collected FICA taxes are deposited into Social Security’s OASDI (old age, survivor and disability) Trust Fund and, for Medicare, the HI (Health Insurance) Trust Fund. Those trust funds are where Social Security and Medicare benefits are paid from, so portions of your FICA contributions go into the appropriate pot to help fund benefit payments for all current and future beneficiaries.

But even though the FICA taxes you pay don’t directly affect your Social Security benefit, continuing to work might have an effect on your benefit amount. If your earnings amount for any current year is higher than the inflation-adjusted earnings in any of the 35 years originally used to compute your Social

Security benefit amount, Social Security will automatically adjust your benefit to reflect that fact. Social Security looks at your earnings from your income tax returns annually and makes any appropriate benefit adjustment retroactively. But remember, earnings from your early earning years will be adjusted for inflation so, for example, $26,000 earned in say 1980 would be about $92,000 after it is adjusted for inflation, and that’s the amount you’d have to earn more than today to replace it in the benefit formula.

BNP Paribas Open Tennis Tournament

Tennis paradise awaits, along with dining, amenities and exhibitions

By Alison Elsner People often assume that to fully enjoy the BNP Paribas Open Tournament held in Indian Wells, one must play tennis or know a lot about it. Not true. This annual event is now the largest two-week combined ATP and WTA Premier professional tennis tournament in the world outside of the four grand slams, and it is truly a multidimensional immersion into what feels like a visit to Utopia.

Held at the luxurious Indian Wells Tennis Garden from March 5 – 18 this year, guests not only experience the excitement of tennis matches, but also vendor booths, shopping and exquisite cuisine and drink for all price points. The Tournament features top men and women pro players competing in 96 singles and 32 doubles draws. In 2017, Roger Federer celebrated his fifth tournament win, beating fellow Swiss Stan Wawrinka in straight sets: 6-4, 7-5.

Elena Vesnina was victorious over Svetlana Kuznetsova in three sets: 6-7 (6-8), 7-5, 6-4. For those interesting in following the competitions between the players, there are several ways to attend, ranging from day passes to two-week packages and box seats.

Over the past several years, IWTG owner Larry Ellison, the powerful co-founder of Oracle

who now makes his home (one of them, anyway) in Rancho Mirage, has brought about renovations and upgrades to the facility such as a massive expansion of the Stadium Plaza, redesigning all of the suites and hospitality spaces and adding 21 new restaurants and concessions, making it one of the most beautiful and unique anywhere to be found.

This year, thanks to Ellison’s insistence on the highest standards for guests and players alike, there are four upscale restaurants on site, featuring cuisine by awardwinning chefs. These dining hot spots include Spago, headed by iconic chef Wolfgang Puck, offering the best in Beverly Hills-style Californian cuisine; Nobu, with James Beard chef Nobu Matsuhisa at the helm, preparing his signature blend of traditional Japanese dishes with South American ingredients; Piero’s PizzaVino, a mirror version of the popular El Paseo eatery serving authentic Neapolitan pizza and dishes made with all-natural, traditional flavors straight from Italy; and, Wally’s Desert Turtle (new this year), delivering favorite classic and contemporary cuisine selections loved by many at their permanent Rancho Mirage location.

Spago overlooks center court on Stadium One while the other three restaurants overlook Sta-

dium Two. All restaurants are first-come, first served and seated, during popular tennis matches they become very busy, often with patrons lined up. However, while waiting to be seated, guests can enjoy a glass of wine in the restaurant bar at each venue, or they can hold court, so to speak, at The Sports Bar, a centrally located watering hole close to all of the action. The Sports Bar is a destination in and of itself with cocktails, 50 televisions, air conditioning and player-signature dishes.

There are also options for dining and drinking on the premises that are a tad less pricey but every bit as delicious, including Los Angeles’ famous Cassell’s Hamburgers, gourmet hot dogs from Dave’s Doghouse, sushi bento boxes from The Fish Market, healthy options from Melissa’s Market and over a dozen others that will win over your taste buds.

Other non-tennis attractions include: Salute to Heroes presentation on March 9, a special, moving ceremony recognizing veterans, military personnel, police and fire personnel immediately following the first evening session match on Stadium 1; the chance for fans to play a ping-pong point against a pro at the Audi main display area; player autograph signings, announced each day during the Tournament; and numerous daily

exhibitions, senior and youth activities on and off the court and player presentations.

Parking is well organized and convenient, with easy access by way of a short walk or golf cart ride (provided) to the entrance.

General parking in the lot off of Miles Avenue is $25 per car.

Day session attendees may leave and re-enter prior to 4:30 p.m. at no additional charge. Separate parking is required for re-entry after 4:30 p.m. Disabled, valet and VIP self-parking are also available.

There’s no outside alcohol allowed inside (but don’t worry, there is plenty sold on site), and pets aren’t allowed unless they are certified service animals.

Guests should read through the website in advance to view a map of the property and review allowances and restrictions for bags, backpacks and cameras.

Day session ticket holders may enter the grounds beginning at 10 a.m. Evening session ticket holders may enter the grounds beginning at 4:30 p.m., though admission may be delayed if the day session runs late.

Grounds passes start at $20 per person or $50 per person with non-reserved seating, and they go up from there. Tickets are selling quickly, so attendees are encouraged to purchase online soon.

In any case, the sporting event is clearly not just about the tennis. The design, dining and amenities continue to elevate the caliber of every aspect of the BNP Paribas Tournament. The restaurants, interaction with players, presentations, exhibitions and beauty of the venue showcase the Tournament’s stature in a bold and brilliant way.

When they say, “Tennis Paradise Awaits,” they mean it.

When Age Catches Up With You At what point do we finally cave in to aging? It’s different for all of us, but there are some things we eventually need to give up.

Aren’t there?

For me the breaking point in “I can do it myself” came recently when I started planning for a bit of redecorating.

Tops on my list was painting a few rooms.

I’m no neophyte when it comes to a paintbrush and roller -- and a ladder. I painted my first room at age 16 and have painted at least some of every place I’ve ever lived since then.

I have a 20-year-old ladder, a bit wobbly now but perfectly stable for zipping up and down while wearing a certain pair of shoes (also old) for grip. I even know just how far it’s safe to lean to the left or right without the ladder tipping. I’ve felt perfectly safe.

Until now.

What, I’ve asked myself, would happen if I fell and there was no one here to help?

I’ve thought about ways around that, including having a neighbor come over. But no, I wouldn’t enjoy what has always been a happy solitary task with music blaring.

So where do you draw your line in the battle against aging? When do you stop shoveling snow? When do you ask for help carrying 40-pound bags of pet food? And when do you stop hanging from a ladder like a monkey while wielding a paintbrush?

After making a few calls, my painting situation has been solved. A very nice young painter will be here to paint ceiling trim and the top two feet of walls while I, with feet firmly on the floor, paint everything else.

Actor Gary Beach joins the cast of ‘On The Air!’

A one-night-only show of live radio classics Dezart Performs brings Tony award-winning actor Gary Beach to an already stellar cast of celebrity performers in the fifth edition of “On the Air! An Evening of Live Radio Show Classics” at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 8 at the Camelot Theatres at the Palm Springs Cultural Center.

This one-night-only benefit transports the audience back to the Golden Age of radio, complete with a cast of celebrity performers, live on-stage music and sound effects. Recipe of the Week Kitchen Diva

• 1/4 cup honey • 1 deli rotisserie chicken (2 to 2 1/2 pounds), cut into 6 to 8 pieces, skin removed if desired

ROTISSERIE CHICKEN WITH TASTE OF MOROCCO

I love using rotisserie chickens in my recipes when I'm pressed for time. Rotisserie chickens are reasonably priced, convenient, come seasoned in a variety of ways and can be transformed into a multitude of quick and easy main-dish meals. Best of all, if you purchase a plain, roasted chicken, you can use the bones to make a rich, homemade chicken stock or enhance the flavors of pre-packaged stocks or broths, so nothing goes to waste.

Most rotisserie chickens are large enough to serve at least four people as a main course.

Or, you can pull the meat from the bones and use it in recipes that call for pre-cooked chicken.

Shredded chicken can be used in recipes from salads, sandwiches and soups to enchiladas or chicken pot pies.

Using a pre-cooked chicken lets you explore new and unusual recipes that would ordinarily take a lot of time to prepare. This recipe for Speedy Mediterranean Chicken is ready in just 30 minutes and imparts all the exotic

spices and flavors of the traditional recipe. A rotisserie chicken seasoned with lemon pepper is perfect for this dish.

The flavors used in this recipe are reminiscent of an exotic Moroccan tagine. A tagine is both a type of heavy clay pot with a domed lid and the dish that is cooked in it. Tagines typically are found in the North African cuisines of Morocco. Most Moroccan tagines combine lamb, chicken or beef with a variety of ingredients and seasonings, including citrus fruits, nuts, honey and pungent spices.

This recipe blends spicy salsa and curry powder, and adds a hint of sweetness by incorporat-

ing honey and raisins with spectacular results. Toasting the curry powder in the oil first gives this dish an authentic taste and brings out the flavors of the spice. Serve with hot cooked couscous or rice to make the most of the savory sauce that envelops the chicken.

SPEEDY MEDITERRANEAN CHICKEN • 1 tablespoon olive or vegetable oil • 2 teaspoons curry powder • 1 jar (16 ounces) chunky salsa • 1/2 cup sliced green olives • 1/4 cup golden raisins

1. In 12-inch nonstick skillet, heat oil over medium heat. Stir in curry powder. Cook over medium heat 1 minute, stirring constantly.

2. Stir in remaining ingredients except chicken. Add chicken; turn to coat.

3. Cover; cook over mediumhigh heat 5 to 6 minutes, turning chicken occasionally until sauce is bubbly and chicken is thoroughly heated. Makes 4 servings.

Hailey: Schnauzer, Adult, Female Hi, everyone! I’m Hailey and I’m a female Schnauzer mix who’s about four-years-old. My coat is a mixture of black, gray and white and is sometimes referred to as shades of “salt and pepper”—I think that’s an interesting way to describe it! I weigh about 15 pounds.

I make a very sweet appearance– don’t you think so? If you didn’t immediately say yes, then look again at my loving face and soulful eyes. I’m even smiling at the camera because I’m with my best friend and big brother Comet.

I was brought to Pet Rescue not because I did anything bad or wrong–my former owner passed away. I came to Pet Rescue with my best friend Comet. Comet and I are a team and we go together as in “Hailey’s Comet.” I love him

He’s my big brother and we’ve been through a lot together.

Comet and I were very sad when our owner passed because we had a good life. I realize that sometimes life just happens and I can’t let it get me down too much because I still have Comet with me.

It would be so great if we could be adopted together so that we keep the family bond. That would make us both so very happy!

Coachella Valley Wildflower Festival Every Spring the wildflowers bloom in the Coachella Valley and the 11th Annual Coachella Valley Wildflower Festival is the best place to enjoy all that Spring has to offer. The festival is hosted by Friends of the Desert Mountains on Saturday, March 3, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Santa Rosa & San Jacinto Mountains National Monument Visitor Center in Palm Desert. The day of the event, shuttles will run from St. Margaret’s Church on Highway 74, as there is no onsite parking.

In addition to wildflower viewing, this free-to-attend event offers beautiful art, a kids’ zone and a climbing wall. Food and beverages will be available for

purchase. Guided interpretive wildflower hikes will begin at 9:15 a.m. and continue every 15 minutes until 2 p.m. A 5k run/ walk will begin at 8:30 a.m., with registration beginning at 8 a.m.

The Arrangements will be performing in the beer and wine garden from noon to 3:30 p.m.

The festival also includes raffles, vendors and exhibitors.
