018 marks the third year of the Auburn Recreation District’s (ARD) annual Acoustic Guitar Festival, dubbed the “String Fling.” This year, the festival has expanded to include three separate events — a performer/ instructor showcase, a feature artist concert, and the instructional workshops.

The performer/instructor showcase will take place April 13 at the Strum Shop in Roseville. This event will give attendees an opportunity to meet the instructors and watch them perform. Hannah Jane Kile of Auburn will be the headlining performer of the showcase.

in that he uses an Ovation double-neck acoustic guitar. One neck has a traditional six string and the other has 12 strings. By using special tunings and right hand tapping methods, Mark creates a myriad of unique melodies and harmonies which is truly amazing to watch. Opening for Kroos will be Auburn’s own Forest Bailey. Bailey is a local Auburn favorite who had gained notoriety with his percussive guitar technique and use of open tuning and harmonics. This night will be a treat for those enjoy the guitar.

The instructional workshops will take place on April 21 at the ARD Canyon View Community Center. The workshops run 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Classes range from blues to classical guitar, and students can learn directly from the headlining performers Mark Kroos and Hannah Jane Kile.

This year features a “beginners track” with local teachers for folks or kids new to the guitar. This 8

is a remarkable opportunity for guitar players in Placer County to not only hear renowned musicians, but also to meet and study with them in a small classroom setting.

“We are very pleased to be working with ARD in our third year of the festival,” said current committee member and co-founder of String Fling Preston Marx. “ The event has grown quickly in popularity and the addition of pre-workshop concerts with the instructors has been a tremendous draw. Lighting up the gray days BULBS BLOOM THROUGHOUT THE FOOTHILLS STORY BY GLORIA YOUNG

T

hey may not be electric, but spring bulbs definitely light up the gray days of late winter and early spring.

In the foothills, paperwhites are the early risers.

“I’ve got paperwhites ready to break open and flower in my yard now,” Eisley Nursery employee Cyndi Davis said in January. “Some years they are out as early as Christmas time.

Most of the others you’ll start seeing in February, March or April. It depends on the weather.”

Daffodils, hyacinth, tulips and crocus are also early bloomers. Planning for colorful spring blossoms begins in fall. Buy the bulbs in late August or early September. Then, store them in the refrigerator for four to six weeks to create the winter chill effect.

“Not in the freezer,” Davis cautioned. “And you want them in something breathable — not a tight plastic bag. A paper bag is best.”

If the bulbs arrived in a net bag, that will work as well.

“It’s important to plant them the day you take them out of the fridge,” she said.

That should be after the soil has cooled — late October or early November.

“I recommend planting them with good mulch and fertilizer, and then water them in well,” Davis said. “Typically they will be OK until you see them sprout and then water if we don’t have rain.”

Individual blooms will last as long as a couple of weeks.

“But if you have many, they will have an extended bloom for a few weeks,” she said.

When the flowers are finished blooming, cut off the blossom stem but leave the foliage until it dies back naturally. It absorbs nutrients from the rain and snow to replenish and build for next year’s bloom.

“If you leave the blossom on, the energy goes into seed production,” she said. “You don’t want that.”

While most of the bulbs come back year after year, tulips may not be as hardy.

“They don’t seem to last more than two to three years,” Davis said. “That’s why they were so valuable (in The Netherlands) back in the 1500s and 1600s.”

In fact, tulips are more high maintenance in general among the bulb varieties.

Daffodils and narcissus are probably the absolute best choice for our area, according to Davis.

“They are deer resistant and fairly pest resistant,” she said. “They multiply easily and are tolerant of most conditions.”

Bearded iris will bloom a little later — March, April and May. Then they bloom again in the fall.

If you didn’t get around to planting bulbs last fall, there are plenty of potted varieties to enjoy.

After they’ve finished blooming, cut off the blossom stems and plant the foliage in the garden.

Make sure the area you choose for planting gets four to six hours of sunlight.

“Amend the soil and use bulb food and starter fertilizer when you plant,” Davis said.

“That way, it is down in the root zone where the plants can suck it up.”

Bulbs aren’t just for spring. If you plant them in the spring, they will bloom into summer — even lasting until August.

“For most spring-planted bulbs, I would suggest waiting until roughly March when the soil and nights are starting to warm a little and the days are getting longer,” Davis said.

If you plant too early, you run the risk of rot before the bulbs can put out root growth.

Bulbs for spring planting don’t need the refrigerator time.

“Store them in a cool, dry, dark place until ready for planting,” she said.

Dahlias are a big favorite with customers at Eisley Nursery.

“I get people that really love them,” Davis said. “I haven’t done them much myself. Just because the deer will eat them. ... They are beautiful and a hardy perennial. They will come back again and again.”

Big, bold and beautiful LEAVE PLENTY OF ROOM FOR ARTICHOKES STORY BY GLORIA YOUNG

t’s still too early to plant spring and summer vegetables.

They must wait until the weather and soil warms. But fall-planted artichokes are spreading new shoots and leaves in the garden.

Auburn gardener Ellen Stephens planted two as seedlings at the end of last summer’s growing season and they are flourishing.

“They didn’t grow for a while. Then all of a sudden with the cold weather, they shot right up,” she said.

The perennials are taking up most of one of the five raised beds in her garden.

This is Stephens’ second time to plant artichokes.

“I had grown them a couple of years back,” she said.

“After a while, the plant got kind of old and stop producing, so I pulled it out. I wanted to try again because we love artichokes.”

She advises that, when planting them, be sure to allow for sufficient space between each one — 2 to 3 feet or even more.

“They are big plants — pretty wide and pretty tall,” she said.

To give them a healthy start, she added a good organic compost mix and some granulated alfalfa.

“I create my own compost,” she said.

She waters her garden three times a week during summer and early fall. But after the rainy season begins, nature 12

takes over the watering chores. However, this winter’s long dry spells between rains necessitate some watering.

As spring nears and the growth accelerates, the artichoke plants develop a beautiful purple flower.

That’s when the artichokes appear — technically as unopened flower buds.

Stephens’ earlier planting was a big producer.

“I’d say we got 15 or so off that last plant,” she said.

In fact, each plant will typically produce 15 artichokes in a season. At the end of the growing season, cut back the stalks to the ground and add a good mulch to ensure a healthy start for the next year’s crop, she said.

Artichokes are available in bare root form, Placer County Master Gardener Elaine Applebaum said in a previous Ask the Master Gardener column in the Auburn Journal.

“They may not produce a crop the first year after planting, but will increase in size and production,” Applebaum said. “Artichokes may freeze in the coldest areas, but can survive for several years in a protected spot.”

When the artichokes are ready for harvest, Stephens keeps preparation and presentation simple.

“We cut off the bottom so the artichoke sits in a steaming pan,” she explained. “I cut off the sharp tips and open up the leaves a little bit. Then I pour olive oil and garlic inside the

TIPS FOR PLANTING ARTICHOKES • Artichokes don’t reproduce true from seed so they should be planted using root divisions available at nurseries. Healthy plants can be dug up, the root divided into two or more parts and replanted.

• Don’t plant artichokes near tree roots as they don’t compete well for nutrients and water.

• In a vegetable garden, plant them to the side so they won’t be disturbed by the more frequent planting of annual vegetables.

• Feed them in the fall with a high-nitrogen fertilizer.

• Artichoke plants require frequent irrigation during the growing season. But they don’t tolerate standing in water, so plant them on mounds or in rows with irrigation furrows.

• They grow best in cool coastal areas, where they produce two crops per year. center and steam them. My husband likes them with mayonnaise. I like them with a little mayonnaise with soy sauce.”

Steaming time is about 10 minutes at the most, she said.

At that point, they are tender but retain their bright green color.

In addition to artichokes, this time of year Stephens’ garden includes kale, Swiss chard, broccoli and lettuce.

Stephens completed the Placer County Master Gardener program in 2003 and is a member of the Auburn Garden Club.

Gardening has always been a joy in her life.

“My father was a farmer and I took his place,” she said.

“I love farming.”

ARTICHOKE TOAST AND MINI TOAST

Y

ou’ve heard of avocado toast, but what about artichoke toast? This may be your new guilty pleasure — regardless of whether or not you fall in a certain millennial age bracket.

With the persistent chill of winter still lingering in the air, a warm slice of toasted bread covered with a savory, melted cheese and artichoke topping makes the dreary clouds of March seem to drift away.

When I was gathering ingredients for this recipe, I imagined using a sourdough loaf for the bread. But as I was driving to a grocery store, I took a different route and happened upon a delightfully picturesque corner bakery with a neon sign that read “New Roma Bakery.” The bakery is on the corner of E and 18 St. in Sacramento and I highly recommend it. At first I kept driving, but then suddenly made the decision to turn the car around and go inside. I’m glad I did. Once inside, I was greeted with the smell of freshly baked bread and sweet pastries through a haze of flour. As with most bakeries, there were so many options and it took me a good 10 minutes to finally settle on a small French loaf for the base of my artichoke toast. For the mini toasts, I selected a baguette dusted in flour.

Artichokes are one of those less-popular and a bit esoteric vegetables that are not commonly found on restaurant menus. But now artichoke hearts are beginning to show up more as toppings on pizza or for dips. Growing up, my mom would steam whole artichokes, and then our family would eat them by tearing off the leaves and dipping them in mayonnaise. When I think about that now, it’s not such a pleasant memory. I think that is the reason why for many years, I thought I didn’t like the taste of artichokes with their spiky leaves and soggy centers. And if you’re thinking you don’t like artichokes, either, because of how you were forced to eat them as a child, I would recommend giving them another try.

Artichoke toast or mini toast is a delicious way to ease into eating your veggies — smothered in cheese usually is 14

the best way to eat anything, right? And because of the cheese and Greek yogurt, this is a protein-packed snack, too. Artichoke toast can be served as an appetizer — especially the mini toast — or as a full meal when paired with a tomato or vegetable soup. It could also easily be made into grilled cheese by adding another slice of bread on top and grilling or baking it for about 10-15 minutes, on medium heat.

I decided to turn the toast into mini toast when I was trying to decide on an unusual appetizer for a dinner party that I was hosting with an “Italian diner” theme. Originally, I had planned on making bruschetta, but I wanted to try something different and thus the mini toasts were born. I had been calling them artichoke bruschetta, but a baker friend of mine graciously informed me that the word bruschetta actually refers to a particular kind of “mini toast.” It is a starter dish from Italy that is traditionally made with grilled bread rubbed with garlic and topped with tomatoes, olive oil and basil. After learning this, I began to call my creation mini toasts instead, which I thought sounded cuter anyway.

The combination of flavors in this toasty recipe is enhanced with a hint of garlic and fresh basil leaves as a garnish. I rarely make the same recipe twice; there are too many variations that I am curious to try. Create your own artichoke toast or mini toast by experimenting with different breads, cheeses and methods of baking. Although the artichoke and cheese mixture does not need to be baked to be eaten, I think you’ll find it is tastier warm and melty.

ARTICHOKE TOAST AND MINI TOAST INGREDIENTS

2 cups cooked artichoke hearts, quartered or 1 14 oz. can artichoke hearts, quartered 2 cloves minced garlic 1 cup plain Greek yogurt 1 cup cream cheese, softened 1 cup grated mozzarella cheese 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese — divided into two ½ cups Fresh basil (optional) Sliced bread — any type, depending of preference.

(For mini toast, use sliced baguette) INSTRUCTIONS

1. Pre-heat oven to broil.

2. In a large mixing bowl, combine artichokes, garlic, Greek yogurt, cream cheese, mozzarella cheese and half of the Parmesan cheese.

Mix until mostly smooth, allowing for some lumps of artichoke.

3. Arrange sliced bread on baking sheet. Spoon artichoke mixture onto bread. Be sure to completely cover the edges of the bread to prevent burning. Top with remaining Parmesan cheese and basil, if desired.

4. Bake for approximately 10 minutes, or until golden brown and bubbly. Allow to cool and enjoy.

What to expect You could easily turn a trip to the farmers’ market a date for brunch, followed by stocking up for a multiple-course meal at home. The variety of produce changes with the season, so check the PlacerGROWN website at placergrown.org to see what’s available. For early March, you can expect to find: FRUIT: apples, lemons, limes, mandarins, persimmons, pomegranates and oranges.

VEGETABLES: beets, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cucumbers, kohlrabi, leeks, mushrooms, onions, potatoes, pumpkins, radishes, snap peas, turnips and squash.

SALAD GREENS AND HERBS: arugula, Asian greens (bok choy, tat soi), collard greens, garlic, kale, lettuce, oregano, rosemary, scallions, spinach, sprouts, swiss chard, watercress, wheatgrass.

Regardless of the season eggs, honey, meats and coffee are available from various vendors. You’ll also find a number of prepared foods you can snack on while at the market, such as vegan pestos from Township Valley Farm, sprouted hummus from Zena Foods, single-serving treats from Andolin’s Pies, garlic spreads from Garlish, bottled kombucha from Nash’s, pastries from the Baker and the Cakemaker, and chocolate chip cookies from Foresthill Cookies using Benjamin Franklin’s original recipe (at least that’s what the folks at Foresthill Cookies said.)

If you’ve got a schedule that prevents you from visiting the farmers’ markets available this time of year, you can often work out purchasing directly from the farm. Finding local produce is easy using the PlacerGROWN website at placergrown.org.

How to find local produce and other items on PlacerGrown.org There’s two ways to find items on the PlacerGROWN website. The first is by clicking the magnifying glass icon on the website and typing in what you’re looking for. You’ll see a list of all the results, which will include vendors and recipes that show the item you’re looking for.

Another way to find things is by using the menu. Click on Local Farmers in the top menu, and see a page where you can filter by name or product. If you check off a product and click the Filter button, you’ll then see a list 18

of farmers and vendors that sell who product, along with contact information such as email, phone number or website. You’ll also see keywords next to each listed vendor. If you click on a keyword, you can see a list of vendors and recipes related to that keyword, which can be handy for finding culinary inspiration for what’s in season.

The Yelp app can save payment details, such as credit and debit card information, so that it can be quickly used for future orders.

one are the days when you had to settle for “fast food” for convenience. Today, coffee houses, restaurants and other dining establishments are offering customers the easy ability to order takeout and delivery through mobile app technology.

WHO DOES THIS CONVENIENCE APP-EAL TO?

Coworkers may find ordering in groups easier online rather than trying to phone in a list of names and meals.

People who are hard-of-hearing, have sensory issues or are uncomfortable in some public settings may find using an app more comfortable than dealing with face-to-face contact.

Have a short lunch break and don’t want to waste it standing in line? These apps can cut wait time by handling ordering and payment straight from your phone.

SHOPPING LOCAL IN A-TOWN

If you thought only major chains could offer online ordering, technology from companies like Square and Yelp allow independents in Auburn to offer online ordering for take out.

Being Square at Depoe Bay Coffee At Depoe Bay Coffee Roasters, you can order drinks, food and beans in person or online. What makes this possible is a point of sale (POS) system from Square, which allows them to use tablets or smartphones to ring people up. A small card reader attaches to the tablet or phone’s earphone jack, giving businesses the ability to swipe cards for transactions.

Another feature of Square is that once businesses set up products for sale on their POS, those same products can be purchased online via a website. Depoe Bay is one Auburn business taking advantage of this feature to reach more customers.

The coffee roaster receives about 10-15 orders per day, most being breakfast items and espresso drinks, Barton said.

But they also sell merchandise and coffee beans roasted fresh from Auburn.

“A lot of people from out-of-state order beans on our website and then we ship them,” Barton said.

Another benefit of using Square is that businesses like Depoe Bay can easily set up rewards systems. For each order at Depoe Bay, customers can collect stars whenever they use their card or a phone number associated with the card, and after 10 stars, they can get a free drink. The reward program is similar to the classic punch cards, except that Square saves all the information electronically, and can even send text messages to customers once they’ve earned a reward.

The text messaging feature also helps with notifying customers that their online orders are ready for pickup. When a customer orders online, the POS at Depoe Bay will print a ticket out for the barista and cook. Once the order is ready, Square will send a text message to the customer announcing it’s ready for pickup.

Yelping for Happy Wok Happy Wok in Auburn allows you to order online for delivery or takeout directly from Yelp. This means if you’ve got the Yelp app on your mobile device, you can skip the line and save time.

For delivery, there’s a $6 fee plus a $35 minimum order per delivery. The experience of ordering pickup is similar to ordering in person or via phone, except that you’re interfacing with the Yelp app.

How to order using the Yelp app: 1. Open the Yelp app and search for ”delivery” or “takeout.”

Currently, delivery options are limited in Auburn.

2. Select a restaurant you want to order from and tap the “start order” button. You should then see a menu showing what’s available for ordering. Some items will have photos and a description, but at the minimum they’ll have a name with a price, just as you’d expect on a menu while inside the establishment.

3. Tap on an item to see more details and it to your virtual cart. Most items have options allowing you to specify the quantity or size of the item, and you can leave notes such as “extra sauce, no onions.” Once you’ve customized your menu item, tap the “add to cart” button.

4. After you’ve added all your items, tap the “view cart” button, which should show the number of items you’ve selected plus the total. You can then schedule pickup time to be as soon as possible, or in advance. On this screen you should see the grand total including tax and tip if you don’t want to tip in cash.

5. Once you’re ready to complete your order, tap “continue checkout.” You’ll then need to select your payment method, which could be by card, cash, or using a service like Apple Pay or PayPal. The first time you select a card, you’ll need to enter your card details, but afterward, the Yelp app will save your card information so you won’t have to enter it again.

6. Once you’re finished, tap the “purchase” button to confirm your purchase. If you’re ordering takeout, you should get a window of time to pick up your order.

Some other local business are on Yelp offering take out, such as Szechuan Restaurant, Mountain Mike’s Pizza and Dickey’s Barbecue Pit. Since the Yelp app saves your payment details, you can order from different restaurants from the same app without having to constantly enter in 16-digit card numbers.

FOOD DELIVERY SERVICES

In addition to ordering from apps, several websites now allow you order to have food delivered for a fee and usually a minimum order. Here’s a couple to consider: 24

BringMeThat.com BringMeThat is one of several online delivery services that will bring local flavors to your door. For example, you can order a pizza and starters from Old Town Pizza for the same you would pay to visit, plus a $4.50 service fee. Note that even though some businesses are listed on BringMeThat.com, they’ll sometimes show a message saying they don’t actually accept online orders.

Ezcater offers more delivery selections, but for sometimes a larger minimum order and delivery fee. For Auburn, the minimum order can range from $20 to $300, and the delivery cost as high as $38. But the selection is greater, covering unique cuisines such as Peruvian, Afghan and more. Ezcater may not be the best choice for individual orders, but may be a great choice for large family gatherings or company get-togethers where a lot of people will be present.

OTHER APPS WORTH MENTIONING

Starbucks and Chipotle are two chains that have apps worth mentioning. Both of these allow you to order online, and like the Yelp app, these will save your payment details so you don’t have to enter it again. But you can also save favorites items, so reordering can be done in seconds. If you’ve got a favorite drink or meal and are heading back with family from the Sierra, you can place your order in Colfax and pick it up when you arrive in Auburn. Of course, don’t drive and order at the same time.

SIERRA VISTA COMMUNITY CENTER OFFERS CLASSES, EVENTS STORY AND PHOTOS BY AARON TWEETON

I

f it’s happening in Colfax, it’s probably happening at the center, the Sierra Vista Community Center (SVCC) that is. Games, gardening and gouche (a type of paint) meet together throughout the whole year, keeping one of Colfax’s most recognizable buildings bustling with activities.

HOW TO FIND OUT WHAT’S HAPPENING AT SVCC

The Sierra Vista Community Center has a website, but Tim Elizarraraz who manages the SVCC facilities recommends their Facebook page at fb.com/svcc.org (Note, svcc.org is not the community center’s website and will take you to a website for another organization).

On their Facebook page, there is a list of upcoming events, such as the flea market that happens every third Saturday, or Sunday bingo games. If you’ve got an electronic calendar, click the Interested or Going buttons to add the event

SOME OF THE EVENTS AT THE COMMUNITY CENTER Open art studio

For six years, artists have been able to use the open art studio at the SVCC to practice their craft, whether it’s painting, drawing or something else. The studio is open to all ages and all levels of experience — just bring your own art supplies and $5 to cover heating and light for the week. The relaxed atmosphere is also a great place to bounce creative ideas off other artists, or ask about specific techniques.

Garden club

Mickey Bauer started teaching tap classes at the SVCC last year.

Bauer said she teaches a range from basic to more complex tap dancing and choreography. The classes help dancers learn balance through movement, strengthen muscles and exercise aerobically.

“Dance is a great brain exercise through learning steps, combinations and choreography — all which test the memory,” Bauer said.

Class size ranges from four to eight and all levels of experience are welcome. In addition to the classes at the SVCC, the students also prepare for performances elsewhere in the community, such as the Colfax Harvest Fair and Sierra Ridge Memory Care Center. They are planning for a performance at the Chocolate, Wine and Art Indulgence on April 28.
