‘THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST’ At Palm Canyon Theatre

Oscar Wilde’s classic The Importance of Being Earnest will grace the Palm Canyon Theatre stage February 2225. Premiering on Valentine’s Day in 1895 at the St. James’ Theatre in London, the story has stood the test of time, and arguably become Wilde’s most enduringly popular play. Subtitled, “A trivial comedy for serious people,” The Importance of Being Earnest has received critical acclaim

for centuries for its high farce and witty dialogue. The comedy centers around two bachelors who create personas, each called Earnest, to escape their tiresome lives and burdensome social obligations. The two attempt to win the hearts of two women who, conveniently, claim to only love men called Earnest. The duo struggle to keep up with their own stories and become tangled in a tale of deception, disguise and misadventure. Phillip Hubler will play John Worthing – one of the friends calling himself Earnest. The other Earnest (Algernon Moncrieff) will be played by Tobaiah Wilhelm. The two women they are wooing, Cecily Cardew and Gwendolen Fairfax, will be played by

Ashley Davies and Chandra Smith, respectively. Other cast includes Peter Mins as Lane, John Holton as Rev. Canon Chasuble, and Kam Sysco as Lady Bracknell. Set in late Victorian London, the play repeatedly mocks Victorian traditions and social customs, marriage and the pursuit of love in particular. The play’s original Broadway production opened at the Empire Theatre in April 1895. Its cast included William Faversham as Algy, Henry Miller as Jack, Viola Allen as Gwendolen, and Ida Vernon as Lady Bracknell. The play has garnered international success through many generations and was adapted into three major films as well as many made-for TV versions.

The Importance of Being Earnest opens at the Palm Canyon Theatre on Thursday, February 22, and runs through Sunday, February 25. Show times are 7 p.m. on Thursday, 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The Sunday matinee starts at 2 p.m. Tickets are $29.50. Student tickets are $15, with valid ID; student tickets must be purchased at the Box Office. For tickets or more information, call the Palm Canyon Theatre Box Office at 760323-5123 or order online: PalmCanyonTheatre.org. The Palm Canyon Theatre is located at 538 North Palm Canyon Drive, at the corner of Alejo Road and Palm Canyon Drive. Box Office hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

What is this world coming to? How cynical can we get, asks the Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC]. The senior advocacy organization reports that Hasbro plans to introduce a new version of the classic board game, Monopoly, in the fall. It caters to cheaters. The company says that half of Monopoly enthusiasts out there cheat in one way or another so it has decided to

offer a special “Cheaters Edition.” It includes 15 game cards that instruct players to commit offenses such as moving another player’s token and stealing from the bank. Not nice, adds AMAC. Social Security Matters

“Ask Rusty” - Divorced Spouse Benefits Dear Rusty: Thank you for your Social Security articles, which a group of friends and I read every week. If it had not been for one of your articles, I wouldn’t have known that I could get benefits on my ex-husband’s record, especially that when I turn 66 I can file to get just spouse benefits and not take my own yet. Some of my friends are also divorced, and most of us don’t understand what we can get from our ex-spouse’s record. Could you explain what kind of benefits we can get being divorced? We have no one to ask and Social Security doesn’t tell you these things. Signed: Divorced & Want to Know Dear Divorced: I’m glad you and your friends are enjoying my Social Security articles. I’ll be happy to focus this one on the benefits available to divorced spouses. For starters, you should know that Social Security’s rules on divorce are “gender neutral”; that is, they apply equally to both divorced women and divorced men. The basis for a spousal benefit is always the ex’s benefit amount at their full retirement age (FRA), even if your ex-spouse started benefits earlier. In order to be eligible for spouse benefits though, you must be at least 62 and unmarried, you must have been married to your ex for at least 10 years, and your ex must be either already col-

lecting retirement (or disability) benefits or at least be eligible to collect them. If they’re not already collecting but are eligible, you must be divorced for at least 2 years. Although spouse benefits are often cited as being ½ of the ex’s benefit amount, that’s only true if you have reached your full retirement age when you claim the spouse benefit. Otherwise, your spouse benefit will be reduced to something less than 50%, perhaps as low as 32.5% of your ex’s FRA benefit amount (depending upon your age when you apply). If you are also eligible for Social Security benefits on your own work record, the spousal benefit must be larger than your own for you to get a “spousal boost” bringing you up to the spousal benefit amount. The amount of benefit you get will not affect the amount of your ex’s benefit, nor the benefit of anyone else receiving benefits on your ex’s record. If you were born before January 2, 1954, and you have reached your full retirement age and have not yet applied for benefits, you have the option to take only spouse benefits and allow your benefit from your own work record grow at 8% per year up until you reach age 70, at which time you can switch to your own benefit if it is larger. You should also be aware that if you take any Social Security benefits before you reach your

full retirement age and also work, you’ll be subject to an “earnings limit” which, if you exceed it, will result in some of your benefits being withheld. If, as a divorced spouse, your exspouse predeceases you, you may be eligible for survivor benefits equal to 100% of what your ex was receiving (or entitled to receive). In this case there is an exception to the age rule which says that you can collect survivor benefits as early as age 60 (50 if you’re disabled). However, if you take survivor’s benefits before your full retirement age (which as a survivor can be less than your normal FRA), your benefit amount will be reduced. You may defer collecting survivor’s benefits to let them grow to their full value at your full retirement age, but they stop growing when you reach your FRA. You can, however, continue to collect survivor benefits past your full retirement age and allow your own retirement benefit to grow, if that would be to your financial advantage. In fact, if your survivor benefit is larger than your own retirement benefit, you may continue collecting it for the rest of your life. Rhythm, Wine & Brews Experience An oasis of wine, beer, food and music

By Alison Elsner There’s a reason it’s called the Rhythm, Wine & Brews Experience. One you attend, your perspective on how to have a good time may be forever transformed, raising the bar on what’s required for fun and excitement. The 7th annual event, known as RWB for short, will take place Saturday, March 3 at the scenic Empire Polo Club, starting at 5 p.m. (VIP ticket holders can enter at 4 p.m.) Guests will be able to get warmed up for the evening’s musical entertainment by visiting over 100 wine and craft beer tasting stations, featuring Dark Horse Winery, Clos du Bois, Bogle Winery and a plethora of others. Breweries offering tastes will include La Quinta Brewing Company, Coachella Valley Brewing Company, Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., Boochcraft, King Harbor Brewing Company and many more. The Tiki Bar will be open for the

first time during the Rhythm, Wine & Brews Experience. Attendees will be able to enjoy sipping on island-style craft cocktails while taking in views of the lush garden and tropical lagoon. The Craft Brew House Bar will be serving a huge selection of craft beers on tap. Multiple bar locations will offer refreshing craft cocktails, distinctive wine selections and chilled beverages. The food line-up is equally impressive, with gourmet food trucks and fare from a variety of regional restaurants. Some of the food vendors scheduled to serve up deliciousness include Barrett’s Lemonade/Sausage King, Greek East, Romega Taqueria, Copper Top Coffee, Tater Tots, It Ain’t Easy Being Cheesy of Philadelphia, Front Porch Pops Torch / Pretzels, Spicy Pie, The Big Cheese, Avocatoast by Lizzy, Kaboom Kettle Korn and Wicked Maine Lobster, among others to be announced. As the tastings wind down around 7 p.m., the evening really ramps up as

musicians take the stage - the Rhythm part of the adventure - with headliner Stone Temple Pilots (or STP). Stone Temple Pilots got their start in San Diego in 1989 and became one of the most commercially successful bands of the 1990s, as part of the grunge movement. The band has incorporated a variety of influences, including psychedelic rock, Bossa nova and classic rock. The band will release its seventh studio album, also titled Stone Temple Pilots, on March 16, 2018. Other big-name bands set to perform throughout the evening until 11 p.m. include The Psychedelic Furs, She Wants Revenge, Petty Cash, The Flusters and The Smooth Brothers, presenting fans with performers for a variety of tastes and demographics. In other words, there’s something for every age range and musical interest here, and this year much of the music is especially geared to those who will appreciate tunes from the 1990s.

RWB producer Alex Haagen, IV says, “Every year we create a line-up that offers guests a variety of music ranging from party blues and reggae to classic rock and hip hop. This year we’ve brought together an exceptional blend of genres that brings back sounds of the 80s, the 90s and early millennial rock.” Haagen is the son of Alex Haagen, III, owner of the Empire Polo Club. The Haagen team also operates the Date Shed and the Tack Room on the polo grounds. As if this isn’t enough sensory stimulation all in one venue, there will also be colorful and inventive art installations by day which will transform into marvelously luminous arrangements at night. Cirque-type entertainers, part of the Flowbox performance troupe, will mingle with attendees and display their aerial silks, stilt-walking, fire dancing, juggling and acrobatics. Guest artist Emily Colvin will feature her glass art work, which is a product of her collaboration with Haagen especially for this year’s event. The festival offers tent and car camping as well as RV camping. All camping spots are for two nights beginning on Friday, March 2 through checkout on Sunday, March 4, and the fee is $150 per RV or $50 per car, with (required) festival admission separate. Campers will be able to use bathrooms and showers at the campground in addition to private access to the festival from the campground, within walking distance. Guests can look forward to an afternoon and evening in an oasis of food, drink, music and art which also benefits a meaningful cause. A portion of the event proceeds will benefit the Casey Lee Ball Foundation for pediatric kidney research. Tickets are $80 per person general admission for entertainment only, $99 per person general admission for entertainment plus tastings, $170 for VIP admission and $325 for Elite passes. Children 12 and under are free. Parking is free. All ages are welcome, however guests must be 21 to taste beer or wine. Tickets can be purchased online at rwbexp.com or at the gate on the day of the event (box office opens at 12 p.m.) Empire Polo Club 81800 51st Ave, Indio info@rwbexp.com, rwbexp.com

Ever Thought About Having a Roommate?

So many seniors live alone, and the last thing you want is to move just because the house becomes too much to handle on your own. Or maybe your property taxes went up and your $3 Social Security increase won’t cover it. What if you had a roommate? The first instinct might be to say no to that idea. You don’t want a stranger sharing your space. But think about that. What if you had someone to help shovel the walk the next time it snows? Or someone whose rent payment means you can stay in your home? Or even, on a more friendly level, someone to play chess or cards with? Start by calling the senior center, Council on Aging or local social services office to ask if they know of a roommate matching service. Once you locate one, be prepared to be extremely honest in what you’re looking for. If you can’t stand to be around people drinking alcohol, say so. If you go to bed early and need the house quiet by a certain time at night, say that, too. The more honest you are, the more likely you are to find a roommate who is compatible. Be sure to have credit and background checks done. The best possible situation might be if there’s a college near you. A student who’s old enough not to be required to live in the dorm (sophomore or older), who is tired of the noise of a dorm, who needs peace and quiet to study, who’s tired of cafeteria food, who is struggling on a budget ... that kind of roommate might be perfect. Don’t say no until you’ve given it some thought!

A Presidents’ Day surprise Archivists at Union College in Schenectady, NY made an astonishing find just in time for Presidents’ Day this year, according to the Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC]. They found a lock of George Washington’s hair in a leather-bound edition of Gaines Universal Register or American and British Kalendar for the year 1793. The book was given to the library by James A. Hamilton, the son of Alexander Hamilton and his wife, Eliza Schuyler Hamilton. Susan Holloway Scott,

a scholar and author of the historical novel, I, Eliza Hamilton, told the United Press International that “In an era when people frequently exchanged hair as a keepsake, it’s quite probable that Martha had given Eliza some of George’s hair, which in turn was given to their son, James, who later distributed it, strand by strand, as a precious memento to close friends and family members.” Filler Files: [www.amac.us] provides the Filler Files as a service on issues of concern to Americans over 50.

Recipe of the Week Kitchen Diva

a layer of clear plastic wrap in direct contact with the avocado, cover tightly and refrigerate. Pairing Mexican Haas avocados with citrus fruits takes an ordinary bowl of salad greens to a new taste level. Try this unusual recipe for Mexican Haas Avocado and Grapefruit Salad with Warm Bacon Dressing. It's guaranteed to take your avocado recipes beyond guacamole!

By Angela Shelf Medearis MEXICAN HAAS AVOCADOS GO BEYOND GUACAMOLE Hass avocados from Mexico are prized by chefs because of their delicate flavor and smooth, buttery texture. Mexican Haas avocados provide a rich, creaminess and a distinctive flavor to a variety of dishes. One of the best things about Mexican Haas avocados is that they contain the good "heart-healthy" fats that are so important in a balanced diet. They're also packed with nutrients -- 20 vitamins and minerals, fiber, folate and potassium. Compared with other fruits, avocados rank among the highest for magnesium, vitamin E and folic acid. Mexican Haas avocados also are high in beta carotene and have 60 percent more potassium than bananas. If you're keeping an eye on your waistline, avocados are perfect for a lowcarb diet. Hass avocados are native to Mexico and grow in the Michoacan area west of Mexico City. The climate and growing conditions are perfect because of the rich volcanic soil. Mexico grows more than 40 percent of the world's avocados and is one of the leading year-round suppliers to the United States. Check the sticker on the avocado before you buy to be sure you're getting the high-quality Haas type from Mexico. An avocado is ready to serve when the skin turns from dark green to nearly black and yields when

pressed gently with a thumb. Firm, dark-green avocados will ripen in a day or two at room temperature, and even faster in a brown paper bag on your kitchen counter. Placing an apple inside the bag also speeds up the process. Ripe avocados can be kept in the refrigerator for several days. You should be able to remove the short stem easily when an avocado is ripe. To open an avocado, cut lengthwise around the pit. Gently twist to separate the halves. To remove the pit, place the avocado half on a counter and carefully strike the pit with the blade of sharp knife and twist to remove. Scoop out the flesh with a spoon. To prevent cut or prepared avocados from darkening, sprinkle with lemon or lime juice. Then place

■ 4 large flour tortillas (10 inches) ■ 2 fully ripened avocados from Mexico, halved, pitted and peeled ■ 4 cups mixed greens ■ 1 large pink or white grapefruit, sectioned and cut into large chunks (about 1 cup packed) reserving juice ■ 2 carrots, cut in 1/2-inch matchsticks ■ 3 ounces queso fresco or feta cheese, cut into 1/2-inch cubes (3/4 cup) ■ 6 slices bacon ■ Vegetable oil, if needed ■ 2/3 cup thinly sliced red onion ■ 3 jalapenos, seeds removed, shell cut in thin matchsticks ■ 1 tablespoon lime juice ■ 2 teaspoons sugar ■ 1/4 teaspoon salt ■ 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

1. Heat oven to 350 F. 2. Coat large baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray. Arrange tortillas on sheet; spray lightly with cooking spray. Bake until crisp and beginning to brown, 6 to 8 minutes; transfer to 4 serving plates. 3. Cut and reserve 12 thin avocado slices; dice remaining avocado. In large bowl, combine mixed greens, grapefruit chunks, carrots, cheese and diced avocado. 4. In large skillet over medium-low heat, cook bacon until crisp; drain. Pour bacon drippings from pan into measuring cup. If necessary, add oil to make 1/4 cup. Return drippings to skillet; heat over medium heat. Add onion and jalapeño; cook until tender. Add lime juice, sugar, salt, pepper and reserved 3 tablespoons grapefruit juice. Bring to a boil, stirring to incorporate the browned bits. 5. Pour mixture over avocado mixture in bowl; toss gently and divide equally onto each tortilla. Crumble bacon over salads and garnish each with 3 avocado slices. Makes 4 servings. SALOME’S STARS WEEK OF FEBRUARY 19, 2018 BORN THIS WEEK: You always try to do the right thing, and for the right reasons. No wonder people have come to depend on you.

ARIES (MARCH 21 TO APRIL 19) Stop being the wool-gathering Lamb, and start turning that dream project into reality. You have the ideas, the drive and the charisma to persuade others to follow your lead. So do it.

LIBRA (SEPTEMBER 23 TO OCTOBER 22) Your loyalty to a friend in a tough situation earns you respect from people you care about. Those who criticize you don't understand what friendship is all about.

TAURUS (APRIL 20 TO MAY 20) You've scored some big successes. But remember that all hardworking Ferdinands and Ferdinandas need some time to restore their energies and refresh their spirits.

SCORPIO (OCTOBER 23 TO NOVEMBER 21) Your strong work ethic is rewarded with the kind of challenging opportunity you love to tackle. Now, go ahead and celebrate with family and/or close friends.

GEMINI (MAY 21 TO JUNE 20) You're gaining a stronger mental image of what you're trying to achieve. Now look for the facts that will help get this to develop from a concept into a solid proposal.

SAGITTARIUS (NOVEMBER 22 TO DECEMBER 21) A legal matter you thought had been finally resolved could require a second look. But don't make any moves without consulting your lawyer.

CANCER (JUNE 21 TO JULY 22) Some of you eager-to-please Moon Children might want to delay some decisions until midweek, when you can again think more with your head than your heart.

CAPRICORN (DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 19) Taking charge is what you like to do, and since you do it so well, expect to be asked to lead a special group. This could open an exciting new vista for you.

LEO (JULY 23 TO AUGUST 22) A new business venture seems to offer everything you've been looking for. But be careful that that rosy picture doesn't betray traces of red ink under the surface.

AQUARIUS (JANUARY 20 TO FEBRUARY 18) An important matter might wind up being entrusted to you for handling. The responsibility is heavy, but you'll have support from people able and eager to help.

VIRGO (AUGUST 23 TO SEPTEMBER 22) A volatile situation needs the kind of thoughtful and considerate care you can provide right now. There'll be plenty of time later to analyze what might have gone wrong.

PISCES (FEBRUARY 19 TO MARCH 20) A spouse or partner might make an important, even life-changing, suggestion. Consider it carefully. It could hold some of the answers you've both been looking for. © 2018 King Features Syndicate, Inc.

Pet of the Week “Pet Rescue”

Comet: Poodle, Adult, Male Hi, everyone! I’m Comet and I’m a male Poodle mix who’s about 7-8 years old. My coat is a mixture of white and cream. Since I’m a Poodle mix, I’m also hypoallergenic. I make a very sweet appearance–don’t you think so? If you didn’t immediately say yes, then take a look again at my adorable face and see how I’m smiling at the camera! I weigh about 25 pounds and I’m a very sweet, mellow guy. I was brought to Pet Rescue not because I did anything bad or wrong– my former owner passed away. I came to Pet Rescue with my best friend Hailey. Hailey and I are a team and we go together as in “Hailey’s Comet.” I love her a lot and want to be with her because we’ve been through a lot together.

Hailey and I were very sad when our owner passed because we had a good life. I realize that sometimes life just happens and I can’t let it get me down too much because I still have her with me. It would be so great if we could be adopted together so that we keep the family bond. That would make us both so very happy! Please come visit me and Hailey to see if we would make wonderful additions to your home and life. We were loved once and we know it will happen again for us. You may very well fall in love with both of us and want to take us home. We’re both very sweet and mellow. You’d have double the fun and double the love! Wouldn’t that be a treat! I’m neutered, microchipped, and upto-date with my vaccinations. Adoptable | Small | House Trained –Xoxo Your Celestial Comet

Foreign Accent Syndrome

What are the odds?

It may sound amusing to some, but it’s no laughing matter to a young woman in Arizona, who suffers from Foreign Accent Syndrome, says the Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC]. Seven years ago, the former beauty queen had a headache, took a nap and when she woke up she had an Irish accent. Three years later it happened again. This time she woke up speaking with an Australian accent. In those instances the anomaly lasted about a week. But, in 2015 she said she had a massive headache that disabled her for a period of time. She woke up in the emergency room of a local hospital and to this day she has a distinctly British accent. The woman has never been out of the country. Doctors say the rare illness usually occurs in the aftermath of a neurological incident such as a stroke. The Association of Mature American Citizens [www.amac.us] provides the Filler Files as a service on issues of concern to Americans over 50.

The sophomore class at New Trier High School in Winnetka, Ill set not one, but two world records this year. The Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC] reports that the Guinness Book of World Records cited the school for winding up with the most sets of twins in a single class—44 sets of twins, to be precise. And, the schools sophomores also set the record for having the most multiple siblings in their class. In addition to the 88 twins the class boasts a set of triplets, to boot.
