by Bill Brehm Sr. and his son, Bill Brehm Jr., is now the president and chief executive officer of the company which owns small community newspapers and magazines in California, Arizona, Nevada and Utah. Bill Brehm Sr.’s long history in journalism began at the presses as a “printer’s devil.” After serving in the Navy in WWII, he moved from Nebraska to attend the University of Southern California. His intent was to be an engineer, but because that department was full, he decided to wait to start classes and went to work for the Bell-Maywood Industrial Post, then owned by The W.J. McGiffin Newspaper Company. Initially, he thought he would be making $40 per week, but soon found out that he was actually making only 40 cents an hour. Brehm Sr. got a temporary job as a house painter. His aunt, believing his talents were being wasted, suggested that he should try advertising sales. Brehm Sr. was very successful in sales and worked his way up to publisher of the Industrial Post in 1951. He married the boss’s daughter, Mona, and the two worked side by side in the industry for more than 65 years. In 1955, Brehm Sr. attempted to consolidate the papers owned by the W.J. McGiffin Newspaper Company, which were being sold to pay estate taxes. Three pressrooms became one, and the company turned a profit in 1958. Brehm Sr. expanded into the Los Angeles communities as his newspaper family grew. He built a 26,000-square-foot plant in South Gate in 1972, and doubled the space to accommodate the 17 weekly, semi-weekly and daily papers produced there — with a combined circulation of nearly 250,000. In 1981, Brehm Sr. sold the Los Angeles suburban papers to the Hearst Corporation and began looking for growing communities, especially those near the California aqueduct, where water sports were available. That included the purchase of the Auburn Journal in 1965 along with several nearby publications. It’s estimated that Brehm Sr. bought and sold more than 100 publications in his years.

In 2015, Bill Brehm Sr. passed away after a long battle with cancer. The Brehm family is closely involved in the business. Two of Brehm Sr.’s children, Bill Brehm Jr., Cindy Melland and one of his grandchildren, Ryan Schuyler, are still heavily involved in the company. Brehm Jr. has been the president of the company since 1995, Melland is the publisher and director of Hi Desert Publishing Company and Schuyler is vice president of operations. Brehm Jr. came to Auburn as a teenager when his family was in the process of buying the Auburn Journal from the Cassidy family. At that time, the Auburn Journal was published once a week and was printed using a letterpress (hot lead formed letters and type) which could use the type produced by the hot metal Linotype. The Linotype used hot metal to create each block of type which had to be assembled to produce the paper. “We still have one of these Linotype machines in our front office for visitors to enjoy,” said Brehm Jr. Brehm Jr. started his newspaper career in 1973 as an assistant foreman in the South Gate Press composing room. His duties included composing camera stripping, offset printing and supervising a large, central composing room for five suburban papers. In 1974 Brehm Jr. became the general manager of Horseman’s News where he built the monthly specialty niche publication from 20 to more than 100 pages covering three California zones. While still managing Horseman’s News, Brehm Jr. became the publisher of the

After getting a business management degree and running his own business in Arizona, Brehm’s nephew Ryan Schuyler started working for Brehm Communications out of the Auburn Journal location in 2005. He is now the vice president of operations for Brehm Communications. “I started in the press room, then creative services, circulation, interactive media and nearly every department,” said Schuyler. During his 10 years at Gold Country Media, he has also worked as the publisher of the Folsom Telegraph. In 2015, Schuyler moved to the corporate office in Rancho Bernardo to continue learning about the business from the corporate perspective. He now oversees day to day operations in Arizona, Nevada and Utah as well as digital and IT help for the company. Other local newspapers and products owned by Gold Country Media include The Roseville Press Tribune, Lincoln News Messenger, The Folsom Telegraph, The Placer Herald, The Loomis News, Gold Country Homes, Granite Bay View, Foothill Magazine, Lincoln View, Roseville Magazine, various special publications and Gold Country Printing. “I like to say that the community newspaper must not only fill a need, but it must reflect the reality of the community it serves,” said Brehm Jr. “It must earn and keep the trust of the community it serves.”
