The “Selfieccino” Makes Its Debut If you’ve ever visited a Starbucks coffee shop, you are probably familiar with cappuccinos and a frappuccinos, but you likely have never heard of a “selfieccino.” It’s a foamy coffee concoction with your picture floating on top, says the Association of Mature American Citizens. And, it’s the creation of a London beanery. The customer simply uploads a head shot into what the store calls

its “Cino” machine, which scans the photo and reproduces it using flavorless food coloring atop his or her drink. At $7.50 a pop, you not only get to have your coffee, but you’ll be able to snap a photo of your “selfieccino” and post it on the Internet.

“Annual Dress a Girl Around The World” Rummage Sale February 22 from 9:30 to 2:00 p.m.

What is Dress a Girl Around the World?

Dress A Girl Around the World is part of an international organization called Hope for Women International (hfwi.org) with people from all over the USA, Canada, Uganda, the UK, Philippines, Australia, Sweden, Costa Rica, South Africa, Germany, Norway, Okinawa, Japan and Hong King who are making dresses for little girls in need all around the world. To date over 500,000 dresses have been delivered to girls in need in 82 countries. Volunteers gather in church basements, living rooms, kitchens and in this case, it’s a dedicated sewing room at Hidden Sands that is used every Tuesday evening to sew dresses. In many cases this may be the only new dress these girls have ever been given.

The dresses are sewn at Hidden from November to the end of February every winter and in March they

are picked up by someone from the international organization where they are taken back to their homes and stored until someone is going on a mission. Then they are packed up and delivered to towns or villages in places where they are needed and given directly to the children.

The volunteers are a very active group and last year they donated 850 dresses, each with a pair of panties.

We group them in sizes, fold them carefully and put them into plastic resealable bags and mark the sizes on the bags so it’s easy for whoever will be sorting and shipping them out.

Every dress is made with care and love and the proceeds for the annual fundraiser go towards purchasing tee shirts and other sewing supplies needed to complete the dresses.

Get more bang for your produce buck in February by looking for good deals on: Brussels sprouts, grapefruit and other citrus, pears, kale, sweet potatoes, winter squash, bok choy, apples and radicchio. Branch out with persimmons, leeks, red currants, cherimoya, pomelo and dates.

• If your skin gets dry, try keeping a bottle of lotion in your shower. Apply either just before you towel off or directly after. The heat from a shower will help your skin absorb the moisture.

• Want a great way to clean your ceiling fans without dropping dust bunnies everywhere?

Simply use a pillowcase. Encase the entire blade and wipe from the center out. All the dirt is inside the case, and when you are done, go outdoors to turn it inside out and shake, then pop it in the washer. Best tip ever!

• Got cold hands? This “hot sock” is the greatest for a quick warmup. Add a cup of uncooked white rice to a sock. Knot closed. Pop in the microwave for 45 seconds to 1 1/2 minutes, and then simply hold it. Make a larger one for sore back or neck, or to tuck into the bottom of the bed to keep feet toasty as you drift off to sleep.

Get a Flu Shot, Now. There is Still Time, says AMAC Senior citizen advocate Dan Weber has issued a call for the elderly, in particular, to get a flu shot if they haven’t done so already.

He says it is not too late. The flu season began earlier than usual this year and is expected to last for months.

“There’s still time and, as the saying goes, better late than never. It could save lives. Seniors, especially those 65 years of age or older, are at greater risk of complications from influenza because their immune systems grow weaker with age,” according to Weber, who is president of the Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC].

A worldwide flu pandemic occurred it 1918-1919, leaving between 50 and 100 million people dead- three percent of the world’s population at the time, historian Dan Jones noted in a recent article. There was no vaccine at that time.

No one can predict how long the flu season will last this time around. But, we have vaccines to help significantly reduce the number of people who can become infected with the influenza virus. In fact, even if you get the flu after being vaccinated, the shot will significantly reduce its symptoms among those who had recently received influenza vaccine as compared to those who

had not, says American Society for Microbiology. Symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue.

Dr. Andrea Chisholm is an OB/ GYN at the Cambridge Health Alliance and a Clinical Instructor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Harvard Medical School. She says that the risks associated with the flu far outweigh the risks of not getting vaccinated, even among pregnant women.

Dr. Chisholm says “getting vaccinated against the flu during pregnancy has benefits for your baby as well. Newborns, like pregnant women, are more likely to get seriously ill or even die if they get the flu. Your baby can’t get a flu shot until 6 months of age.

However, if you get the flu vaccine during pregnancy you will pass antibodies to your baby that will protect him or her from the flu in the first few months of life.”

The Centers for Disease Control issued a statement at a news briefing on January 12 in which Dr. Daniel Jernigan, director of CDC’s Influenza Division, said that while “not everyone needs to get antiviral drugs, but there are certain people that should. CDC recommends that people who are very sick or people with flu symptoms who are high-risk for serious flu complications should

be treated as soon as possible with flu antiviral drugs. Who are those people? That means people that are 65 and older. It means young children. It means people with chronic conditions like diabetes, heart disease or asthma. It means pregnant women and others more vulnerable to serious flu illness.”

While Dr. Chisholm and the CDC [www.cdc.gov/flu/protect/ vaccine/qa_vacpregnant.htm] advise pregnant women to get flu shots, Weber says expectant mothers should consult their OB/ GYNs before being vaccinated.

Weber points out that several recent studies have shown that the flu vaccine reduces the risk of catching the flu by 40% to 60% among the general population.

“So, it is advised that anyone who hasn’t yet been vaccinated should do so as soon as possible.”

Riverside County Fair & National Date Festival Headliner bands, fried treats, high-flying carnival rides and more

By Alison Elsner The joyful squeals of Tilt-a-Whirl riders hurtling through mid-air, the strum of the guitars from the headliner band warming up, the bleating of baby goats at the petting zoo and the aroma of fried zucchini and funnel cakes… these are the memories of days and nights spent at the County Fair. Fortunately, these attractions are warm and welcome traditions that continue here in the Coachella Valley, with the 72nd Annual Riverside County Fair & National Date Festival slated to take place February 16–25, 2018 in Indio – the city of festivals.

The entire event kicks off at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, February 16 with opening ceremonies and the Blessing of the Dates, paying tribute to the introduction of the Medjool date to the Coachella Valley in 1927 and the subsequent date-growing industry which thrives today. The Presidents’ Day Grand Parade starts at 9:00 am on Monday, February 19 in the streets of downtown Indio with floats, bands, equestrian units and entertainment galore.

Presented by Fantasy Springs Resort Casino, the annual gathering of music, games, food, animals and entertainment – drawing 300,000 people - will feature all the favorite activities including star-studded headline performers.

The band WAR will take the stage again this year on opening Friday, February 16th at 7:30 p.m., making it easy for

fairgoers to groove to songs like “Why Can’t We Be Friends?,” “Slippin’ Into Darkness,” “Don’t Let No One Get You Down,” “Cisco Kid,” “Low Rider” and many other hits from over the decades.

Platinum selling country star Chase Rice will perform on Saturday, February 17 at 7:30 p.m. and will perform his Top 40 single from his Lambs & Lions album, “Three Chords & The Truth,” among many other country hits.

Los Rieleros Del Norte, one of the oldest norteño bands performing today, will perform on Sunday, February 18 at 7:30 p.m.

And, Lou Gramm, founding member of Foreigner, will perform on Saturday, February 24 at 7 p.m with opening act Foghat. Gramm became one of the most successful rock vocalists of the late 1970s and 1980s with Foreigner, famous for hit songs like “Feels Like the First Time,” “Cold as Ice” and “Hot Blooded.”

On the last day of the Fair, Sunday, February 25th, Super Fiesta will pack the house, featuring Los Tequileros de Ramon Jimenez, Banda Pachuco and Carmen Jara, starting at 3 p.m.

Other entertainment on multiple stages will include the Smooth Sounds of Santana, Flash Back Boyz Band, Andy DiMino’s Toast to Dean Martin and The Cook Islands Polynesian Dance Show.

Before, during or in between all of the groovin’ to the tunes, guests can look forward to the cuteness of goats, sheep, ponies, llamas and camels in

the petting zoo as well as the birth of baby farm animals. There will also be animal adoptions (cats and dogs, not camels and ponies), hosted in partnership with the Riverside County Department of Animal Services, placing 20-30 dogs per day and numerous cats into brand new healthy and loving homes. Special reduced adoption fees will include vaccinations, a microchip and the pet’s surgery, and most dogs are ready to go home on the same day.

For even more pooch power, be sure to catch the The Marvelous Mutts, a show with some of the finest and most adorable canine athletes, all adopted from shelters and rescues. Shows feature crowd participation and a meet and greet with the doggies.

If you’ve never seen a camel or an ostrich race, this is your chance. The ostrich is the largest bird on earth and can run at very high speeds in excess of 40 miles per hour, leading to unpredictability and amusement. Camels represent a long history of desert life with the Bedouin people, giving tribespeople their mobility. Races are free with Fair admission.

There will also be a daily Rainforest Exhibit to bring awareness ways to preserve critters and world ecosystems.

And, of course, one of the favorite parts of any Fair is the food. Plan on dozens of kiosks and booths selling delicacies like date shakes, deep-fried bacon-wrapped dates, kettle corn, candy apples, ice cream, pizza, corndogs, curly fries, massive Texas doughnuts

and fried…everything. Just be sure to take your Crestor the night before and your Pepsid the day of your visit.

Every evening at 6 p.m. there will be a “Salute to America” honoring our country’s armed services. Other activities include the WGAS Demolition Derby, presented by O’Reilly Automotive, Inc., perfect for those who enjoy the pandemonium of crashing cars.

(Last year, Jay Leno even made an appearance). Other shows include the jaw-dropping Suzy Haner Hypnosis Show every evening at 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. and Jules Physical Comedy which combines classical mime training with amazing mask work and a lightning-fast shadowing technique that results in a powerful physical comedy routine.

For those who come equipped with the aforementioned Pepsid, the Carnival is open daily, featuring the excitement and adrenaline rush that can only be found on rides and activities like Zipper, White Water Flume Ride, Vertigo, Quasar, Tornado and dozens of others that involve swift changes in altitude and velocity. There are also less vomit-inducing kids’ rides like the Frog Hopper and the Looney Tooter Train as well as the Giant Wheel which dominates the midway day and night, offering patrons a sweeping view from a height of nearly 100 feet. Passengers are seated in separate gondolas and then whisked smoothly up, around and down again, a motion reminiscent of the ferris wheel - a pleasant ride for the entire family.

There are countless other shows, pageants, contests, vendor booths and games set up during the Fair, all beckoning residents and visitors forth to celebrate a little bit of history and a lot of old-fashioned fun.

The most fun I’ve had this winter is studying digital photography as I stay home avoiding the cold weather, and the flu and crowds. Setting up indoor studios, experimenting with lighting on vintage glassware and corralling the pets for a photo shoot -- it’s been a great way to develop a new hobby.

Why photography? It can strengthen our memory as we need to remember settings and pay attention to composition. It can give us pleasure and raise self-esteem as we (and others) appreciate our results. Photography is art, and it awakens our creativity. Best of all, for now, it can be done indoors.

If you want to step up from snapping pics with a cellphone, try taking a free online photography course to get ideas about what kind of camera you might want. Explore one of the free online classes through Harvard Extension School, or check YouTube. Focus on those that produce pictures that are most attractive to you. Call your local camera store and ask for recommendations about classes and cameras.

Go online and look for “Digital Photography for Seniors for Dummies,” by Mark Justice Hinton, or other photography books for seniors. You’ll learn how to select photo equipment in your price range, set up shots, handle light and more.

If you need to buy a camera, do you want a big camera or a small one? You can find excellent compact point-and-shoot cameras that will fit in your pocket for a few hundred dollars. If you want a bigger Digital Single-Lens Reflex (DSLR) camera, learn what different lens can do.

Explore stock photography websites to get ideas for indoor photography you can do now.

By the time warm weather returns, you’ll be ready to go outdoors with your new skills.

Be Careful What You Say

The owner of New York City saloon recently announced a free speech policy change for patrons, says The Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC]. The Continental bar will no longer tolerate the word, “literally.”

Recipe of the Week Kitchen Diva

By Angela Shelf Medearis CHOCOLATE RULES ON VALENTINE'S DAY Valentine's Day and chocolate are the perfect pair (although I don't need a special holiday to celebrate the joys of eating chocolate). Women make 75 percent of all chocolate purchases throughout the year, but in the days before and on Valentine's Day, 75 percent of chocolate purchases are made by men for the women in their lives.

They must love us a lot, because more than a billion dollars is spent each year on chocolate for Valentine's Day. Recent health research supports the benefits of eating dark chocolate in moderation, including helping to lower high blood pressure. Plant phenols – and in the case of dark chocolate, cocoa phenols – are compounds known to lower blood pressure. Chocolates made in Europe are generally richer in cocoa phenols than those made in the U.S. Dark chocolate also contains beneficial antioxidants, which rid the body of free radicals. Free radicals are destructive molecules that are implicated in heart disease and other ailments. The antioxidants in about 1 1/2 ounces of dark chocolate exceed those found in walnuts, grapes and cranberries.

This recipe for Chocolate Lover's Chocolate Cake should be made with high-quality, premium dark cocoa powder for the best results. Think of it as a delicious way to improve your health while celebrating love on Valentine's Day.

CUPCAKES – Line muffin cups (2-1/2 inches in diameter) with paper bake cups. Heat oven to 350 F. Fill cups 2/3 full with batter. Bake 22 to 25 minutes.

Cool completely. Frost with chocolate frosting recipe below. Makes about 30 cupcakes.

Chocolate Lover's Chocolate Cake ￭ 2 cups sugar ￭ 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour ￭ 3/4 cup premium dark chocolate cocoa powder ￭ 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder ￭ 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda ￭ 1 teaspoon salt ￭ 2 eggs ￭ 1 cup milk ￭ 1/2 cup vegetable oil ￭ 2 teaspoons vanilla extract ￭ 1 cup boiling water ￭ Chocolate frosting (recipe follows) 1. Heat oven to 350 F. Grease and flour two (9-inch) round baking pans (or see variations below).

2. Using a large bowl, stir together the sugar, flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Add the eggs, milk, oil and vanilla. Beat mixture on medium speed for 2 minutes; DO NOT OVERBEAT. Stir in boiling water. The batter will be thin. Pour the batter into the prepared pans.

3. Bake 30 to 35 minutes or until wooden pick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes.

Remove from pans to wire racks. Cool completely. Frost with the Chocolate Lovers Chocolate Frosting recipe below. Makes 10 to 12 servings.

VARIATIONS: ONE-PAN CAKE – Grease and flour 13-by-9-by-2-inch baking pan. Heat oven to 350 F. Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake 35 to 40 minutes.

Cool completely. Frost with the chocolate frosting recipe below.

THREE-LAYER CAKE – Grease and flour three 8-inch round baking pans.

Heat oven to 350 F. Pour batter into prepared pans. Bake 30 to 35 minutes.

Cool 10 minutes; remove from pans to wire racks. Cool completely. Frost with the chocolate frosting recipe below.

BUNDT CAKE – Grease and flour 12-cup Bundt pan. Heat oven to 350 F. Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake

￭ 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter or margarine ￭ 2/3 cup premium dark chocolate baking cocoa ￭ 3 cups powdered sugar ￭ 1/3 cup milk ￭ 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Using a small, microwave-safe bowl, melt butter in the microwave, about 30 to 40 seconds or until melted. Stir in cocoa. Alternately add powdered sugar and milk, beating until the mixture is smooth. Add a small amount of additional milk, if needed, to make the frosting easier to spread. Stir in vanilla extract. Makes about 2 cups frosting.

It appears that Turkish sanitation workers are not your typical garbage collectors; they can be quite bookish at times, according to the Association of Mature American Citizens. A group of them in Ankara, for example, have built a lending library inside an abandoned factory. They started by sorting out reading materials thrown out with the garbage by residents along their routes. Once their generous venture was revealed those same residents and many others began donating books.

The library currently has some 6,000 works of fiction and nonfiction for children and adults. It even has books for scientific research.
