“Ask Rusty” - One Word to Get Extra Benefits

• Keep makeup brushes in tip-top shape: Wash with a good brush cleaner weekly, and store upright in a jar (bristles up). Don’t toss them in a box, bag or drawer with your makeup! They may pick up unwanted pigments and the facial bacteria can compromise makeup!

• If your dryer is taking a long time to run its cycle and the clothes STILL aren’t dry, check your lint trap. Follow the hose all the way to the end, and be sure to check the grate that is in place where the hose exits an exterior wall.

Lint can build up here, making it hard for heat and steam to escape. It’s also a fire hazard.

• “In our house, we use nail polish to distinguish whose plastic leftover containers are whose. My roommate and I both bought the same set (a good deal!), and we painted a little X on the bottom and on the top of the lids in contrasting colors. Dear Rusty: I keep receiving emails from different investor groups about “The one word that will get you an extra $570 per month in social security”, which I could use. Of course they want you to buy all sorts of monthly newsletters in order to get their answer. Is there truly a way to get an extra $570 per month and if so how do I go about getting it, or what is “the word”? Signed: Curious Dear Curious: I’m sure you’ve heard the old adage “If it sounds too good to be true - it is.” I have seen the solicitation you’re speaking of, and I’ve seen many other similar “come-on’s” which are always meant to lure you into buying something in return for revealing a secret way to get more from Social Security.

The reality is this: There isn’t any magical “one word” that will

give you an extra benefit, unless that word is “delay”, meaning if you can delay applying for Social Security your benefit amount will be larger. And that’s because your benefit amount increases with each month you delay up until you reach age 70 when it will reach its maximum. Simply put, the more you delay the larger your benefit will be, and that’s certainly no secret. You’ll often see another tempting and mysterious phrase referred to as “FAASF” - an acronym for “file as a spouse first” - which refers to an option called the Restricted Application for Spousal Benefits Only. This option, which allows a person to file only for spousal benefits while allowing their own retirement benefit to grow, was eliminated by The Bipartisan Budget Act of 2015 for anyone born later than 1953. Those born

in 1954 or after are automatically “deemed” to be filing for both their own retirement benefit and any spousal benefit they may be entitled to and cannot apply to collect only spousal benefits.

But the ads promising to reveal a special “FAASF” option to you are trying to lure a smaller segment of people who may qualify as well as a majority who don’t to buy their product in return for revealing this “secret” option (which, of course, is no secret at all).

Social Security is a complex program with over 2700 rules and regulations, and there really isn’t any simple “one word” anyone can use to beat the system. My suggestion is to heed that old adage, and if you have any questions about whether or not you’re getting all of the Social Security benefits you’re entitled to, contact an independent Social Security advisory service (such as ours at The AMAC Foundation) which isn’t out to sell you anything. Our only goal is to be an independent free service to AMAC members and other senior citizens, with no strings attached.

Flu Hitting Seniors Hard This Winter

Flu season is cutting a wide swath this winter, and seniors are being hit hard. Depending on your source, the flu shots we were given in the fall are between 10 percent and 30 percent effective. That’s not very good. The worst one this year is the Influenza A (H3N2) strain. Your protection will depend on the type of shot you got (trivalent or quadrivalent). If you’re over age 65, chances are you were given the high-dose trivalent, which produces a better immune response.

To keep tabs on how the flu is moving through your state, go online to your state’s department of health. Many of the sites have weekly updates showing lab-verified flu statistics, flu-like illness stats, hospitalizations and deaths. Or you can check the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Influenza Surveillance Report. Look for the USA map and click on your state. You’ll also see that the age range that’s being hit the hardest is age 65 and over, followed by those in the 5064 age range.

One of the best ways to fend off the flu is to wash your hands frequently, especially after you’ve been out. At the grocery store, make use of sanitizing wipes on cart handles, or slather the handles with alcohol-based hand sanitizer. When you get home, wash your hands before you put away the groceries, and even before you pet the dog or cat that’s been waiting for you.

Other helpful ideas are to use your own pen at the bank. Keep your hands away from your face. Wrap antibacterial wipes around doorknobs and leave them there until they dry. Wipe down the refrigerator door handle, microwave buttons and cellphone the same way.

The Unforgettables Foundation

By Alison Elsner Most parents, grandparents and families never even think about the idea of losing a child. Some, however, are thrust into a world of loss and grief that results when a child dies tragically. Fortunately for these families, The Unforgettables Foundation offers a life-saving network of support and ways to focus on love and closure instead of loss and sadness.

The Unforgettables Foundation, a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization, was founded by Chaplain Timothy Evans in 1999. During a decade of clinical work with children and their families, Evans regularly assisted families with the many crises surrounding the death of a child, not the least of which include the crushing financial burdens experienced by families with limited resources.

Evans says, “Being the founding and first chaplain of Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital in 1990 – which is the reason I moved to southern California from Washington, D.C. - I was called in very regularly to support and care for families as a child was dying. Serving in this role for 13 years taught me so much, namely the gap that existed for these families.”

Seeking a solution, and aided by Inland Empire educators, medical professionals, social workers and morticians, Evans created The Unforgettables Foundation. Paramount among aspects of the Foundation’s mission is to assist low income families to provide a dignified, appropriate burial for their children who have passed away.

Requests for aid come from hospitals, social service agencies and families themselves.

The Unforgettables is operated almost entirely by volunteers, with the only the Executive Director and one part time staff assistant receiving compensation.

One of the organization’s most recognized projects, “Lights for Little Lives,” presents the Doctors’ Larry Tomes and Nutria Pages Commitment to Children Award, otherwise known as “Top Doctor” awards, each year since 2001 to physicians who have demonstrated a level of care and giving for families and the program that far exceeds what is expected.

These champions are not required to be pediatricians, but must be physicians (MDs or DOs) who treat or volunteer time with children. Each year, a candlelight “Lights for Little Lives Walk” is held the afternoon of New Year’s Eve in Loma Linda, California,

starting appropriately at the Ronald McDonald House.

Top Doctors winners represent three distinct focus areas: Riverside County, selected by the Riverside County Medical Association (RCMA); San Bernardino County, selected by the San Bernardino County Medical Society (SBCMS); and The Children’s Hospital at Loma Linda University, selected by a panel of pediatricians and physicians.

The three Top Doctors who were recently awarded at the New Year’s Eve Walk include: Representing Riverside County: Sofronio A. Basical, MD, Pediatrician, Moreno Valley.

The Foundation’s fifth annual educational conference, “Children and Families in Crisis: Lifesaving Parenting--What Works and What Doesn’t,” is coming up on April 18 at California State University San Bernardino Palm Desert campus from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Topics will deal with ways that parents and caregivers can prevent childhood deaths by recognizing challenges and vulnerabilities that exist in their daily lives and how to navigate and address those challenges in healthy ways. Specific discussions will include death by suicide, child abuse, trauma, bullying, addictions and more. Tickets are $75 per person. On the beach The beach house that 44-year-old Marcio Matolias built for himself in Rio de Janeiro 22 years ago is, in fact, a super-sized sand castle, reports the Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC]. He told reporters recently that while people pay dearly

for their seaside residences, “I do not have any bills and have a good life.”

Matolias admits that it can get pretty hot inside the sand castle at night and that he sometimes resorts to spending the night at a friend’s house or out of doors on the beach.

Recipe of the Week Kitchen Diva

By Angela Shelf Medearis HALFTIME MEANS SNACK TIME I must admit, I love watching football games. We traditionally watch the Super Bowl at our friends' home while sitting in the same comfortable recliners, and with the same results ... my favorite teams loses!

The cheering, jeering and excitement can create a hearty appetite, and no one wants to miss a minute of the game while grabbing something to eat.

These super snacks can be prepared ahead of time and will satisfy the biggest football fans without taking the host or hostess away from the game.

While I might not pick a winning team, I'm always voted MVC (Most Valuable Chef) when halftime rolls around and these snacks are served!

Buffalo Chicken Dip ￭ 1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened ￭ 1 cup cooked chicken breast ￭ 1/2 cup Buffalo wing sauce ￭ 1/2 cup ranch or blue cheese salad dressing ￭ 2 cups shredded Colby-Monterey Jack cheese ￭ French bread baguette slices, celery ribs, carrot sticks or tortilla chips 1. Heat oven to 350 F. Spread cream cheese into an ungreased shallow 1 quart baking dish. Layer with chicken, wing sauce and salad dressing.

Sprinkle with cheese.

2. Bake, covered with foil, 20-25 minutes or until cheese is melted.

Serve with baguette slices, celery or

carrot sticks, or tortilla chips. Makes about 2 cups.

Super Bowl Mini-Football Sandwiches ￭ 1 cup shredded cheddar and Monterey Jack cheese blend ￭ 1/3 cup pickled piquant peppers, such as peppadews, chopped ￭ 2 tablespoons mayonnaise ￭ 1 teaspoon yellow mustard ￭ 1 teaspoon ground black pepper ￭ 32 slices cocktail pumpernickel, sourdough, rye or whole-grain bread squares ￭ 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted ￭ 8 ounces thinly sliced pastrami ￭ 16 bread and butter pickle slices ￭ 1 to 2 slices (cut into 4-inch squares) white American cheese 1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Mix the shredded cheese, peppers, mayonnaise, mustard and pepper in a medium bowl.

2. Stack 4 slices of bread on a cutting board. Using a knife or 2 1/2-inch round cutter, trim the bread into football shapes, save the trimmings for another use. Continue with the remaining bread.

3. Lay the bread slices on a rimmed baking sheet and brush with the melted butter. Place in oven and toast until crisp, about 5 minutes.

4. Spread about 1 tablespoon of the pepper cheese mixture on the bread.

Top with some pastrami, a pickle and another slice of bread.

5. To make the laces, cut the cheese into 16 long strips. Cut each strip into 1 long and 3 short pieces. Lay the long strip lengthwise on the sandwich, and then the 3 short strips crosswise to make the laces. Repeat with all the strips. Put the sandwiches back into

the oven for 2 minutes to set the cheese laces.

6. Secure the sandwiches with a toothpick and serve. Makes 16 mini sandwiches.

Chili Cornbread Bake You can prepare this delicious combination of chili and cornbread ahead of time and keep it warm in the oven until you're ready to serve. Feel free to use a good-quality, packaged cornbread mix if you're pressed for time, and add in the serrano chiles as directed to the packaged mix. ￭ 1/4 cup vegetable oil ￭ 1 pound ground beef chuck (80/20 mix) ￭ 1 large onion, finely chopped ￭ 2 medium bell peppers, seeded, chopped ￭ 2 cloves garlic, chopped ￭ 1 tablespoon chili powder ￭ 1/4 teaspoon ground chipotle chile ￭ 1 can (14 ounces) fire-roasted diced tomatoes ￭ 1 can (14 ounces) kidney beans, rinsed and drained ￭ 1 can (14 ounces) refried beans ￭ 1 can (14 ounces) whole kernel corn ￭ 2/3 cup fine- to medium-ground cornmeal ￭ 2/3 cup all-purpose flour ￭ 1 teaspoon baking powder

1 large egg 2/3 cup milk 2 serrano chiles, thinly sliced Cilantro, for garnish

1. Heat oven to 400 F. In oven-safe 12-inch skillet, heat 1 tablespoon oil on medium. Add beef; cook 3 minutes or until browned, breaking up meat. With slotted spoon, transfer beef to bowl; discard excess fat.

2. To same skillet, add onion and peppers; cook 7 minutes, stirring. Add garlic, chili powder and chipotle chile.

Cook 2 minutes, stirring.

3. Return beef to skillet. Stir in tomatoes, beans, corn and 1/2 teaspoon salt.

Cook 3 minutes or until mixture is hot.

Remove from heat.

4. Meanwhile, whisk cornmeal, flour, baking powder and 1/4 teaspoon salt. In separate bowl, whisk egg, milk and remaining 3 tablespoons oil; add to cornmeal, stirring to combine. Fold half of serrano chiles into batter. Pour over beef mixture, spreading to cover.

Dot top with remaining serranos.

5. Transfer skillet to oven. Bake 25 minutes or until toothpick inserted into topping comes out clean. Let stand 10 minutes. Garnish with cilantro. Serves 6-8.

"IKE" Eisenhower Hole-In-One Charity Golf Tournament Benefiting the Lucy Curci Cancer Center Claiming as one of his greatest feats in life, on February 6, 1968, at Seven Lakes Golf & Country Club in Palm Springs, former President Dwight D. Eisenhower hit the perfect shot on hole #13, then a 104 yard par 3, and aced his first and only hole-in-one.

On February 5 & 6, Seven Lakes Golf & Country Club in Palm Springs will pay tribute to "Ike's" accomplishment with the 50th Anniversary "Ike" Eisenhower Hole-In-One Charity Golf Tournament. Proceeds from the tournament will benefit programs at the Eisenhower Lucy Curci Cancer Center.

The festivities begin with a Kickoff Party that includes former PGA & Champions Tour Player Jim Colbert

with a 'Fireside Chat.’ The evening includes guest speakers, entertainment, auction, random draw tee assignments, and prizes. Golf follows the next day with a 4-person scramble and a chance for golfers to win up to $100,000 in cash and prizes. "Ike's" hole #13, a 132 yard par 3, is worth $50,000 to the maker of a hole-in-one and $5,000 each to the other three members of the foursome. Luncheon and awards emcee is John White KESQ News Anchor. On site will be "Ike's" personal golf cart as a selfie stop.

Finding Bob Perhaps Bob was frustrated when visitors were not able to find his house. Maybe he'd been missing UPS deliveries. For whatever reason, he decided to put up a sign on the main road in Rancho Santa Margarita, CA that read "Bob's House" with an arrow presumably pointing to his residence, says the Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC]. Local residents spotted the official looking sign and notified the authorities who were amused but took it down anyhow. However,

City Manager Jennifer Cervantez said they were impressed by the fact that the sign met all the standards of the Department of Transportation.

The unidentified Bob went to a lot of trouble to get it made. So, Cervantez posted a note to him on Facebook informing him that he is not in trouble and that, in fact, he can have the sign back.

The Association of Mature American Citizens [www.amac.us] provides the Filler Files as a service on issues of concern to Americans over 50.

Pet of the Week “Pet Rescue”

Cutie: Schnauzer, Adult, Female Hello, everyone. My name is Cutie and I’m a female Schnauzer mix who’s about 5 years old. I weigh about 12 pounds and. my coat is mostly black. My beautiful coat had to be shaved because it was so unkempt and matted. When it grows in, I’ll start looking more and more like a Schnauzer and you’ll really see how pretty I am. Even now, you can tell I’m a little cutie!…lol Cecil and I were found wandering the streets of Coachella and a very kind person brought us to Pet Rescue.

Cecil is the love of my life and we must stay together; we can’t be separated because we’re so bonded, I would be very upset if I didn’t have my handsome Cecil by my side. I know he would be just as upset if he didn’t have me in his life. We need

that special person who understands that and would be willing to provide both of us with our furever home.

Could that special person be you?

I’m a bit more mellow than Cecil and I’m also a very sweet girl who loves to be held and petted. I give kisses back when that happens and I happen to be a good kisser. You can ask Cecil about that because he knows! When no one’s looking, we like to sneak in a kiss or two!

Cecil and I hang out together all day and like to be in each other’s presence. We sometimes like to run around and have fun and play.

Exercise is good for us as well as for you. We could all take walks together!

That would be fun, don’t you think?

Please come visit me and Cecil to see if we’d all make a great team. I’m spayed, microchipped, and up-todate with my vaccinations. Looking forward to meeting you!
