yoga
Woodward offers alternative yoga classes BY JULIE MILLER
K
im Woodward has been practicing yoga for more than 30 years. After a retiring from the tech industry, Woodward learned yoga.
Today, the 72-year-old teaches two yoga classes at Canyon Spirit Yoga in Auburn. One class is chair yoga, the other is a men’s class. “My passion is yoga for people over 50,” he said. Chair yoga is different in that it utilizes a folding chair to steady the user while standing or they can do sit-down exercises. “Chair yoga is aimed at people who for whatever reason — injury or aging — can use a chair as a prop. Some use the chair, others are standing using the chair.” Woodward focuses his teaching on seniors. His oldest student was 100 years old, he said. The other class Woodward instructs is also for older ones. It is called Old Guys Rock and it is geared for men over 50. The idea for the class was inspired by his own observations. He noticed men who wanted to learn yoga would feel intimidated by the majority of women in yoga groups and hide in the back, sometimes not coming again. “I saw men my age would come in to the back of the room (during a yoga class),” Woodward said. “Those are the guys I really wanted to speak to.”
In the beginning, most had never tried yoga before. Now, there are eight to 10 regulars over 60 years old who come each week for the class. Woodward said yoga benefits in that it keeps people nimble as they age. “(If you) want to still tie your shoes at 85,” he said, “you need to do something to keep strength and flexibility up.” Woodward does not charge for his classes and donations are voluntary. Woodward and his wife have draft horses and go on wagon rides. They live in Weimar.
Thus the men’s class was born.

YAerial O Gyoga A is aCrelatively E NnewTform E ofRthe Hindu spiritual and ascetic discipline of yoga. Inspired by aerial gymnastics, calisthenics, pilates, and, of course, yoga, aerial yoga is sometimes referred to as “anti-gravity yoga.” This unique form of yoga involves the use of hammocks suspended from the ceiling that support practitioners’ bodies, allowing them to work against gravity. Popular aerial yoga poses include aerial lunges, the half boat pose, the reclining angle pose, and the one-legged king pigeon pose. Though aerial yoga is a recent phenomenon, those interested in pursuing this unique form of exercise can seek more information at local yoga studios. Unlike traditional yoga that many people can practice at home without supervision, aerial yoga participants should only perform the poses under the direction and supervision of professionals to reduce their risk of injury. — BY METRO CREATIVE SERVICES SUPPLEMENT TO THE AUBURN JOURNAL

Three simple ways to a healthier heart According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for approximately 800,000 deaths every year. In spite of the prevalence of heart disease, men and women are not helpless against it. In fact, there are many ways to reduce the risk for heart disease.
1. Maintain a healthy weight.
Carrying around extra weight takes a toll on the body, increasing a person’s risk for heart disease and stroke. Overweight or obese men and women can work with their physicians to develop a plan for effective, long-term weight loss, a plan that will likely include a combination of diet and routine exercise.
2. Manage blood pressure.
Over time, the arterial walls of people with high blood pressure may become stressed and develop weak spots or scarring that makes them vulnerable to the buildup of plaque. Plaque buildup can increase the risk of blood clots and stroke. Blood pressure can rise as a person ages, so managing blood pressure involves routinely checking it and making certain changes, such as eating healthier foods and exercising more often, if it is high.
3. Control cholesterol levels. The AHA notes that excessive amounts of cholesterol can be deposited into the arteries as plaque. When that happens, it leads to a condition known as atherosclerosis, or a narrowing of the inside of the artery walls. That narrowing leads to an increased risk for heart attack and stroke.

7 reasons to shop farmers’ markets
MEDICINE
BY METRO CREATIVE SERVICES
A
farmers’ market is likely coming to a field or open parking lot near you — if there isn’t already one operating nearby. The United States Department of Agriculture says that, between the years of 2008 and 2013, the number of farmers’ markets doubled across the country.
REAL
SOLUTIONS
Farmers’ markets will continue to thrive and expand as people increasingly realize the benefits of supporting local food providers. Buyers who are not yet familiar with farmer’s markets can examine the following seven reasons to break the ice.
Call to schedule a FREE Meet-n-Greet with one of our 3 Naturopathic Doctors, Chiropractor or Naturopathic Nutritionist to optimize your Body, Mind and Spirit!
1. Enjoy fresh, seasonal foods.
Foods at farmers’ markets tend to be limited to in-season offerings. Some nutritionists suggest eating seasonally available foods is better for your body, because humans ate seasonal produce for thousands of years before shipping and refrigeration changed how people received the majority of their foods. In addition, many people feel that fresh, seasonal foods taste better than the alternatives.
2. Discover new foods.
There’s always something new at a farmers’ market, and this can entice shoppers to expand their flavor palates. Explore interesting, locally grown items. Even children may fall in love with colorful fruits or vegetables and their refreshing tastes.
3. Embrace organic offerings.
Many farmers’ markets offer foods that are organically grown and are produced without GMOs. Farmers’ market retailers also tend to give firsthand accounts of where their foods come from and how they are grown or raised.
4. Indulge in nutritious foods.
The vivid colors and smells emanating from farmers’ markets indicate just how fresh and nutritious the offerings tend to be. Farmers who peddle their wares at farmers’ markets adhere to careful farming methods to ensure their foods are as nutritious as possible. SUPPLEMENT TO THE AUBURN JOURNAL
5. Learn secrets and recipes.
In addition to fresh produce, farmers’ markets may offer baked and other prepared goods. Shopkeepers often mingle with their customers, offering trade secrets and recipe ideas. Additionally, local farm families supported by farmers’ markets generally offer supreme customer service to keep shoppers coming back week after week.
6. Turn the trip into a social excursion. A farmers’ market can be an exciting and flavorful social gathering place for families and groups of friends, as well as a great place to meet other members of the community. Sometimes farmers also mingle with local artisans, so the market can be a one-stop-shopping locale for locally produced food and art.
7. Save money.
Farmers’ markets may sell organic produce at a cost comparable or even lower than other retailers. That’s because local farmers don’t have to transport their items as far as retailers whose foods were shipped from far away places. Any time of the year is perfect for grabbing a tote bag and browsing the wares at a nearby farmers’ market, where shoppers are bound to find something fresh, unique and delicious.

How busy adults to find time for fitness BY METRO CREATIVE SERVICES
M
States spent more than 10 hours each day consuming media. That includes time spent using smartphones, tablets, personal computers, and other devices. By reducing that screen time by just one hour per day, adults can create enough free time to meet the WHO-recommended exercise requirements.
any adults admit to having little or no time to exercise, and statistics support the notion that men and women simply aren’t exercising enough. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, only 21 percent of adults ages 18 and older met the physical activity guidelines for aerobic and muscle-strengthening activity. The World Health Organization recommends that healthy adults between the ages of 18 and 64 should do at least 150 minutes of moderateintensity aerobic physical activity throughout the week or do at least 75 minutes of vigorousintensity aerobic physical activity throughout the week, while also performing musclestrengthening activities involving the major muscle groups at least two days per week.
Make it a group effort.
Commitments to work and family can make it hard to find time to visit the gym or exercise at home. But the benefits of regular exercise are so
substantial that even the busiest adults should make concerted efforts to find time to exercise. Her are a handful of ways to do just that.
Embrace multitasking.

Many professionals are adept at mult-tasking in the office, and those same skills can be applied when trying to find time for exercise. Instead of plopping down on the couch to watch television, bring a tablet to the gym and stream a favorite show. When running errands around town, ride a bicycle or walk instead of driving.
Cut down on screen time.
A 2016 report from The Nielsen Company revealed that the average adult in the United
Involving others can make it easier for adults to find time to exercise. Instead of hosting work meetings in a conference room, take the meeting outside, walking around the office complex while discussing projects rather than sitting stationary around a conference table. At home, take the family along to the gym or go for nightly postdinner walks around the neighborhood.
Redefine date night.
Adults who can’t find time for exercise during the week can redefine date night with their significant others. Instead of patronizing a local restaurant on Friday or Saturday night, enroll in a fitness class together. Parents can still hire babysitters to look after their youngsters while they go burn calories instead of packing them on at local eateries. Finding time to exercise can be difficult for busy adults. But those committed to getting healthier can find ways to do so even when their schedules are booked.
DID YOU KNOW?
Difficulty sleeping? People who periodically experience difficulty sleeping may benefit from spending more time outdoors. According to researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder, sleeping outside can be beneficial to the sleep-wake cycle. That’s because spending time under the stars increases melatonin levels in the body. Melatonin is a hormone that controls wakefulness. Higher levels help the body relax and induce sleep. The researchers found that individuals who spent a weekend in the woods camping out at night fell asleep earlier and rose an hour and a half earlier in the morning. For those who don’t like to camp, increasing exposure to daylight and then avoiding sources of artificial light (i.e., televisions and cellphones) at night can help create a similar effect. — BY METRO CREATIVE SERVICES SUPPLEMENT TO THE AUBURN JOURNAL

fight cancer
Foods that may help fight cancer BY METRO CREATIVE SERVICES
P
eople concerned about their cancer risk may find that switching their diets can do a world of good. Certain foods may reduce cancer risk, according to various cancer experts, including the MD Anderson Cancer Center. Knowing what to put on the table come breakfast, lunch and dinner can go a long way. Some foods show cancer-fighting properties, although it is impossible to currently say one food or another can actually stop cancer from developing. Studies have shown that diets filled with colorful fruits and vegetables can reduce the risk of developing cancer, heart disease and diabetes. Cancer Research UK points out that some foods, such as red meat and salt-preserved foods, can increase a person’s risk of developing some cancers, while vegetables, fruits and foods high in fiber have the opposite effect. A comprehensive review of thousands of studies on physical activity, diet and weight conducted for the World Cancer Research Fund and the American Institute for Cancer Research found that plant-based foods are the best at fighting cancer. Broccoli, berries and garlic showed some of the strongest tendencies to prevent cancer. According to research associates at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, a variety of chemicals from plants known as phytochemicals protect cells from harmful compounds in food and in the environment. Phytochemicals prevent cell damage and mutations. When making their grocery lists, people who want to eat healthy and lower their cancer risk can include as many of these foods as possible.
Use renovations to create healthier homes Blueberries Blueberries are loaded with antioxidants. Antioxidants neutralize the unstable compounds, called free radicals, that can damage cells and lead to cancer.
Home renovation projects are done for several different reasons, whether to update styles, repair damaged or broken items or to achieve more living space. More than ever before, homeowners are choosing improvement projects geared toward making their homes healthier. People interested in making their homes healthier can embrace these renovations and lifestyle changes.
Be aware of furniture materials.
Toxic PBDEs, which are chemicals used as flame retardants on furniture fabrics produced prior to 2006, can send toxins into the air. Some manufacturers may still use these flame retardants in new forms, but with similar risks. Before purchasing furniture, ask if a product is treated, and select naturally fire-resistant materials like wool and cotton.
Lighten up.
Tomatoes The red, rich coloring of tomatoes comes from lycopene. In laboratory tests, lycopene has stopped cancer cells, including breast, lung, and endometrial cancers, from growing. Researchers speculate that lycopene protects cells from damage that could lead to cancer by boosting the immune system.
Lighting is often under appreciated but can have a dramatic impact on whether a home feels inviting, warm and/or uplifting. Experiment with different types of bulbs and lighting fixtures to turn drab and dreary environments into brighter places. Lighting may improve mood and productivity.
Let the sun shine in.
Modify window treatments to let more sunlight into the house. There is evidence that the sun, particularly UV light, is a potent bactericide. The Sunlight Institute advises that there’s no harm in letting natural sunlight do its work, as bacteria within eight feet of low-intensity UV light can be killed in 10 minutes.
Inspect and service wood-burning appliances.
A study published in the American Journal of Respiratory Cell and Molecular Biology has found regular inhalation of wood smoke limits immune activity and function, and anyone who burns wood indoors should be aware of these potential health risks. Ensuring proper ventilation of smoke and routinely cleaning the chimney can help cut down on particulate matter.
Turn to nontoxic products. Garlic Studies suggest that garlic can reduce the incidence of stomach cancer by attacking bacteria associated with some ulcers and belly cancers. Sulfur compounds in the food may stimulate the immune system’s natural defenses against cancer and could reduce inflammation and tumor growth. 10 HEALTHY LIVING 2018
Broccoli Broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables like cauliflower, cabbage and kale contain glucosinolates. These are phytochemicals that produce protective enzymes that activate in the intestines. One particular compound, sulforaphane, is strongest and found in broccoli. Protective properties are highest in raw or steamed broccoli.
Always opt for nontoxic, natural products when cleaning in and around the house.
Declutter the home.
A cluttered, hectic space can affect emotions and mental state, never mind attracting dust and making a home harder to clean. Spending time in spaces that do not elicit stressful feelings is healthier and can help residents to rest and recharge.

PIRS helps keep Placer residents independent BY JULIE MILLER
B
y the year 2030, it has been estimated that 30 percent of Placer County will be 60 years old and older, said Susan “Tink” Miller, executive director at Placer Independent Resource Services (PIRS). “That’s not a normal distribution,” Miller said. To plan for the influx of an older population, have no fear, PIRS is here to provide residents with contacts, assistance and more for the aging to stay in their own homes as long as possible and has done so for decades. This includes programs that add such things as grab bars in the bathroom and threshold ramps on doorways plus “an array of devices to make the home safer or accessible,” Miller said. They also provide those with disabilities minor home repairs, such as a leaky faucet. PIRS can connect the disabled person with those who provide services such as cooking, washing laundry as well as taking them to the store and doctor appointments. This can be paid through MediCal. PIRS does not staff the workers, but will connect the two parties together. The workers then become employees of those who are disabled. “We’re not a temp agency, but we can help recruit,” Miller said.
PIRS Placer Independent Resource Services WHERE: 11768 Atwood Road,
# 29, Auburn INFO: 530-885-6100 or pirs.org But, PIRS doesn’t just offer services for seniors, it provides help to any with disabilities, including physical and mental challenges. They can direct disabled ones and their families to agencies who offer skills training such as teaching Braille or job coaching. PIRS is ready with many referrals to get connected with the right source to help the lives of disabled ones, to be more independent. The organization is funded by the federal government and works with the state to determine who qualifies. It does not charge for help, assistance or referrals. It serves seven counties: Yolo, Yuba, Sutter, Colusa, Nevada, Sierra and Placer. PIRS is a invaluable service for the community. And residents would be wise to remember them. “A lot of people don’t know we’re here,” Miller said. “Unless we’re offering something they need.”
DID YOU KNOW?
Vacationing produces a host of health benefits according to numerous studies. The ongoing Framingham Heart Study, which began in 1948 and is currently studying its third generation of participants, found that men who did not take a vacation for several years were 30 percent more likely to have heart attacks than men who took time off. In addition, the FHS found women who take a vacation only once every six years or less were nearly eight times as likely to develop coronary heart disease or have a heart attack as women who vacation at least twice per year. Vacations also have been linked to lower stress levels, as a study from the American Psychological Association concluded that vacations reduce stress by removing people from activities and environments that are the sources of their stress. Vacations can even benefit employers, as an internal study from the professional services firm Ernst & Young found that employees’ year-end performance ratings improved by 8 percent for each additional 10 hours of vacation time they took. — BY METRO CREATIVE SERVICES

fight the flu
Flu-fighting tips to keep you and others healthy Sniffles, sore throat, fever, and aches and pains may accompany a number of illnesses, but during the wintertime such symptoms are typically indicative of influenza. The CDC says that each year one in five Americans gets the flu. Taking steps to fend off the flu can help men and women and the people they routinely come in contact with.
Foods
Food can be used to fend of the flu. Garlic, for example, contains compounds that have direct antiviral effects and may help destroy the flu before it affects the body. Raw garlic is best. A study published in the American Journal of Therapeutics showed that carnosine, a compound found in chicken soup, can help strengthen the body’s immune system and help fight off the flu in its early stages.

Annual flu shots administered in advance of flu season can help protect people and their families from getting the flu. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says that, in select situations, antiviral medications — which are usually prescribed to treat the flu and lessen symptoms — can reduce the chance of illness in people exposed to influenza.

ealthy living may have just gotten easier. ReGenesis in Auburn offers a different kind of treatment from conventional medicine.
Cold laser
The most popular treatment given at ReGenesis is the MLS cold laser therapy. “It gets rid of all kinds of pain,” said Dorothy Lewis, owner of the business. “It helps heal the tissue that causes pain.” One success story Lewis told was man who had a bad accident. He came in on crutches and after treatment, walked out of the office. “He had to come back because he forgot his crutches,” Lewis said. ReGenesis also has a portable cold laser that can be administered to patients who can’t get to the center because of too much pain or time constraints.
Hot laser
There is also a hot laser available at the center. This one isn’t used for pain, but for beauty. “This is the laser Madonna uses,” Lewis said. “I love this machine.” It gets rid of wrinkles, lines and scars, she said. “The best part I love the most is it brings back collagen production,” Lewis said. “Facelifts don’t do that.”
Stop germ proliferation
Doctors recommend staying home for at least 24 hours after a flu-induced fever has dissipated. People also should avoid touching their eyes, noses and mouths after being in public places or around someone who is ill.
Rest and restore
Those who feel symptoms coming on should begin drinking more liquids to keep the respiratory system hydrated and make mucus less viscous. Remember to get adequate sleep, as a tired body cannot effectively fight the flu virus.

regenesiscentre.com Three treatments at ReGenesis cost $2,500, a bargain compared to $6,000 for the same therapy charged in Hollywood, Lewis said.
Weight loss
The center may help with losing pounds. There are two methods used. First, there is the contour light that reduces fat cells “on average four to eight inches per session,” Lewis said. “That’s 30 minutes a session.” Second, there is Formostar, which is a body
wrap that burns “1,400 calories per hour,” Lewis said, by “melting” fat and water weight. Lewis has personally tried the process and said she has lost 30 pounds since July and is down three dress sizes. Another experience she related was on a Friday before her daughter’s wedding. One of the bridesmaids could not zip her dress. Lewis put her through the treatments and by Sunday, she was able to zip the dress and had about an inch to spare in time for the wedding.
Other services
The business also offers herbs and help with detoxing the liver. ReGenesis also offers an analysis that shows what vitamins and minerals the body is deficient in and how much radiation has been exposed. “We want to help people from the inside out and outside in,” Lewis said.

back pain
Three simple ways to alleviate back pain BY METRO CREATIVE SERVICES
F
Ruling out degenerative diseases can be a first step in treating back pain. Doctors also may ask their patients about their level of physical activity. Doctors may want to know if patients suffering back pain engage in activities involving repetitive movements to determine if their back pain can be traced to these activities.
ew health problems are as prevalent as back pain. The American Chiropractic Association says that 50 percent of working Americans admit to having back pain symptoms each year. Back pain can be so significant that it results in a loss of function that impedes daily activities. In fact, according to the 2015 Global Burden of Disease report, back pain is the single leading cause of disability in most countries. Back pain can be a complex issue. According to data complied by TheGoodBody.com, only one in 10 people learns the primary cause of their pain. That’s because many
things, including muscle sprains or joint irritation, can contribute to back pain. Other factors that may contribute to back pain include arthritis, stress, obesity, or diseases of the internal organs. Each of these issues can make it challenging to uncover the culprit behind back pain.
Some common factors contribute to back pain, and addressing these issues may bring about relief.
Strengthen core muscles.
Poor muscle tone, especially in the back and abdominal muscles, may result in back pain. Engaging in activities that strengthen the core can help strengthen the
area, offering more support to the back. A doctor, physical therapist or fitness instructor may guide you in exercises, such as planks or abdominal crunches, that can strengthen the core.
Get up and move.
around and taking breaks from the desk can help alleviate pain.
Lose weight.
A sedentary lifestyle can be a major contributor to back pain. Nearly half of Americans who experience back pain are desk workers who spend the majority of their time sitting, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Qi Spine, a clinic that gathered data from 1,300 people who said they deal with spinerelated pain, found that half the participants with sedentary jobs had lower back pain. Standing, moving
The spine is vulnerable to effects of obesity. Extra weight in the abdomen may pull the pelvis forward and strain the lower back, states the American Obesity Association. Losing weight can reduce that strain on the lower back, thereby reducing pain. Back pain is a frequent complaint and compels many people to visit their doctors. Exercise, maintaining a healthy weight and strengthening core muscles can go a long way toward keeping the back healthy and pain-free.

Yard work can be just as challenging as a thorough aerobics workout at a nearby fitness club. To reap the greatest benefits, gardeners should use as little motorized machinery as possible. Manual tools will get you moving and can burn a substantial amount of calories. Try to vary positions and alternate which hands you use to reduce strain and get an even workout. Fitness experts say that gardening can improve strength, increase endurance and assist with flexibility. According to a report in the UK publication The Telegraph, clearing a pond or weeding can burn some 300 calories in an hour. Forty-five minutes worth of gardening can burn as many calories as 30 minutes of aerobics. — BY METRO CREATIVE SERVICES
