he Granite Bay View is 29 years old, just two years younger than the designation “Granite Bay.” Naturally the magazine has gone through some changes in that time, but its mission remains: to share stories of interest to readers in this corner of Placer County.

That has meant a little bit of everything from local history to businesses, sports teams, local people, event coverage and Q&As to special features aimed at Granite Bay’s particular demographics like travelers or wine connoisseurs.

With more than 180 issues in the magazine’s 16 years at Gold Country Media, it has also meant repeating ourselves once in a while, but that’s something we try to avoid. We know there are more stories in Granite Bay to tell, and we’re keen to find them.

orget conversation hearts and chocolates. Those looking to trade sugary treats for eye candy this Valentine’s Day can find it atop Lovers Leap, a granite promontory 6,946 feet above sea level in the Eldorado National Forest.

The trail lies off U.S. 50 near the mountain towns of Strawberry and Twin Bridges. According to recreation database AllTrails, Lovers Leap is frequented between March and September, but it’s accessible in winter months for hikers who don’t mind snow and mud. Most of the trail has a slight elevation gain, but those willing to take on a steep climb in the last quarter mile will be rewarded with a view that’s nothing short of breathtaking.

GETTING THERE

Headed east from Granite Bay, the trip to the trailhead takes about an hour and a half. Depending on road conditions this time of year, chains or snow tires may be required. Hikers can park at the Mt. Ralston lot, across from Camp Sacramento off U.S. 50. Navigation services may say to park on the right side of the road, but the parking lot will be on the left for those eastbound.

Across the highway, follow a paved road over the South Fork American River into Camp Sacramento. Among the camp’s 61 outbuildings and 14 acres, the trailhead is somewhat hidden but hikers can find it by continuing straight through camp,

headed southwest. Small posts marked “LL” provide some direction near the back of the facility. The post closest to the trail is between buildings 52 and 53. Below a power line and between an old stump and a power pole, the trek begins.

HAPPY TRAILS

At first, the path is rocky — which may be tricky for pets, small children or elderly hikers — but eventually it smoothes out.

Cutting across a gentle slope, it’s all but a straight shot to the summit, with one switchback near the top. About half a mile in, the path forks at a junction with the Sayles Canyon Trail, marked with a post bearing “XP.” Hikers should keep right at the junction to stay en route to Lovers Leap. Halfway to the top, the north side of the trail opens up to a view of mountainsides and Horsetail Falls.

This time of year there may be snow underfoot. In mid-January, the trail had up to two inches of snow — not really worth bringing snowshoes, but requiring warm, waterproof, sturdy footwear.

The trail can get icy in spots, at least in the morning hours, so footwear with traction is helpful too.

While the trail is short and moderately strenuous, hikers should bring the essentials, including plenty of water and a snack. A walking stick, either manufactured or makeshift, is helpful for extra

support on the steeper parts of the trail, particularly on the way back down.

It’s also a good idea to bring a whistle or something to make noise, especially if no one else is along for the trek, since this runs through the backyard of large predators like mountain lions and bears.

According to Eldorado National Forest spokeswoman Kristi Schroeder, the area is also home to foxes, squirrels, chipmunks and several bird species, including peregrine falcons and golden eagles.

TAKING IN THE VIEW

While facing Horsetail Falls and especially at the top, it’s worth having a camera and binoculars. Right as hikers hit steep elevation, they can turn around and peer further east into the Sierra Nevada, with peaks running on for miles beyond a ridge across the

highway. The vista provides a convenient excuse to take breaks if needed.

The summit opens westward to a valley flanked with thick conifers and partially overgrown granite outcroppings. A snowy peak rises to the north while the highway runs through Strawberry below.

According to information from the United States Department of Agriculture, Lovers Leap was formed in part by a glacier that slid down Pyramid Creek, a few miles from the southwestern edge of Lake Tahoe. The glacier turned west toward present-day Strawberry, never completely covering Lovers Leap but scraping along the edge of it sometime during the late Pleistocene epoch.

continued from page 11 cise common sense, especially those with children or pets in tow. While it’s not a straight drop in some parts, the ride down would be a bumpy and tragic one, as the trail’s namesake suggests.

Lovers Leap doesn’t appear to tie back to a specific tale or source, but local legAbove: A sign nailed to a pine at the summit of Lovers Leap lets hikers know they’ve reached the right place.

end says it was named after two young Native American lovers who jumped to their deaths from the cliff. It shares the toponym with sites bearing similar legends in at least a dozen other states.

But it’s hard to think of tragedy when nestled beneath a tree or on a rock overlooking the valley. Though AllTrails says the area experiences moderate traffic and is a popular rock-climbing spot, a Saturday morning hike in the offseason can be a solitary experience.

Hiking solo, the trail is mostly silent. At the top, the only noise is light wind, the occasional songbird and the distant sigh of highway traffic below. Add in peaks and trees as far as the eye can see and Lovers Leap provides a peaceful spot to get away, with plenty of time to be back in town for dinner and a show.

Residents weigh in on Women’s March, DACA, upcoming election, compassion

S

ome were simple in construction and sentiment: pieces of cardboard with things like “I’m so over this!” or “Sushi rolls, not gender roles” scribbled in Sharpie.

Others bore more complexity, from feather boa borders to full-blown manifestos on any number of topics: reproductive health, wage gaps, sexual assault and other hot-button topics in the country’s political atmosphere.

But each of the roughly 36,000 people who marched — women and men, teens and seniors, people of all colors — had a reason to be at California’s capitol on Jan. 20, whether they broadcast their motive on a sign or not.

The 2018 Women’s March on Sacramento was a sister march to hundreds of others across the United States on the anniversary of last year’s presidential inauguration. It drew participants from Calaveras County, Vacaville and elsewhere throughout the state, according to LaMills Garrett, one of the march’s organizers.

But south Placer County attendance formed one of the largest contingencies, Garrett said, especially participants from Roseville and Lincoln. Granite Bay and Rocklin residents joined the cause as well.

year because she felt many of the issues she stood up for had not been resolved.

A teacher at a Title I school in Roseville, Reece works with children of immigrant families and said support for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, recipients was a priority for her.

Reece also said she marched to sup-

port women candidates running against District 4 Congressman Tom McClintock in this year’s election.

“I think it’s the No. 1 goal, to flip this district blue and get McClintock out,” Reece said. “He doesn’t represent us living here in District 4.”

While the possibility of a woman rep-

resentative was one reason Rocklin speech therapist Julie Miller marched, she hopes to see more policy supporting the environment, healthcare, equal pay and immigrants.

Miller, who marched in Washington, D.C. last year, said that for a wealthy, typically conservative area like Placer County, she imagines affordable housing and access to affordable childcare are top issues. Though this isn’t Miller’s personal experience, she believes there needs to be more compassion toward “people with unique stories.”

Marks echoed a similar sentiment, saying that even though Placer County has a different demographic than other areas, injustice affects everyone.

Many of this year’s marchers had political motives, as evidenced by signs and chants critical of President Donald Trump and his policies, and the anti-GOP undertones were enough to keep some of last year’s participants home.

Dori Kelsey, a member of the Roseville Women’s Improvement Club, recalled a positive and peaceful experience at last year’s Sacramento march, but decided to sit this one out.

“I heard this year was more about dethroning Trump,” she said. “Not that I like Trump, but as much as we hate him, he won.”

For others like Roseville teen Brett Cole Young, the march wasn’t so much about party dynamics as it was getting out and learning about different people.

Young, a 17-year-old photographer, said he marched in 2017 and intended to march this year. He said the event provided a chance to meet people with ideas slightly different from his own. Walking away from last year’s march, he knew he wasn’t done learning about other perspectives and shaping his own beliefs, which inspired him to go again this year.

“As a straight white man, it’s very easy to live my life and play my cards if I want something,” Young said. “Having an understanding of important issues that matter to other people, I think, is huge.”

Looking ahead, Garrett said the Sacramento organization assumes there will be another march next year. But the focus now is mobilizing around issues impacting women, he said, which means ensuring their voices are heard loud and clear in the conversations to come.

The society’s name shortens to SABR. In 1982, analyst Bill James paid tribute to SABR by defining advanced baseball statistics as sabermetrics. So even while many SABR members don’t use sabermetrics, preferring historical research, some people think of stats when they hear SABR. One of these people might have been Baker, 68, a Granite Bay resident who’s had a consistently successful career as a Major League Baseball manager and was a fine player, too, but has excelled with an old-school approach, seeming not to rely much on sabermetrics.

Baker agreed to speak at the dinner — hosted by SABR’s Sacramento chapter, which renamed itself after Baker in 2016 — at the invitation of his friend and chapter member Clay Sigg after some misgivings.

“Clay asked me to come here tonight.

I wasn’t exactly sure what I was coming into,” Baker said.

But a night that might have been awkward proved enchanting, as Baker cast aside inhibitions about his audience, telling stories of his career and taking questions for 45 minutes.

A cold, clinical event this was not. Baker spoke without notes and generally went in chronological order without offering dates, lending his remarks a free-associative quality. It was like listening to a fireside chat from one of baseball’s finest elder statesmen.

Baker spoke of his father Johnnie Baker, Sr. being the Little League coach for future big leaguer Bobby Bonds.

“The reason I played four sports was to be like Bobby Bonds,” Baker said. “He was the best athlete that I had ever seen.”

In time, Baker developed as a great athlete, too, playing four sports at Del Campo High School in Sacramento and signing after graduation with the Atlanta Braves.

He opted to sign over playing baseball in college after Hank Aaron told Baker’s mom that he would treat him like a son.

But surprises awaited Baker, such as the racism of the Deep South.

“I remember one time, I’m getting off the bus to go get something to eat (and someone said) ‘Where you going, boy?’”

Baker told the audience. “I said, ‘Hey man, No. 1, I ain’t “boy.” And No. 2, I’m going to get me something to eat.’ They say, ‘Man, get your butt back on that bus (or) somebody (will) put you back on that bus.’ So it was awakening for me.”

Eventually, Baker’s fortunes improved and he made it to the majors with the Braves where, in 1974, he was on deck when Aaron hit his 715th home run off Al Downing, breaking Babe Ruth’s 39-year record. Baker, with less fanfare, walked in the next at-bat.

HITTING THE BIG TIME

In the days before free agency in baseball, Baker’s salaries lagged in his early seasons, going from $15,000 to $18,000 to $42,000. Before long, Baker requested a trade from Braves’ general manager Eddie Robinson, who threatened to send him to the Cleveland Indians.

“I didn’t know that’s where they would send all the guys, the bad actors, they would send them to Cleveland,” Baker said. “That was the Siberian Front.”

Instead, Baker was dealt to the Los Angeles Dodgers. In the days before cell phones, he found out about the trade

In his first year playing in Southern California, struggling with a knee injury he’d picked up in a game of pickup basketball, Baker hit just four home runs. Playing in front of the fans at Chavez Ravine that season, 1976 got to be a chore.

“At the end, I didn’t even want to come out of the dugout to go hit because they were booing me and booing me bad,” Baker said.

Famed manager Tommy Lasorda stuck with Baker, though, and he blossomed into a star in 1977, one of four Dodgers to hit 30 home runs, helping the team to the World Series.

“People say, ‘Dusty, you’re so loyal to your players,’ but Tommy Lasorda was loyal to me,” Baker said. “Because he told me I was his left fielder no matter what had happened.”

Baker played eight years in Los Angeles, all told, before winding down his career with short stints with the San Francisco Giants and Oakland Athletics.

The website Baseball-Reference.com notes that Baker has managed four teams over 22 seasons, from the San Francisco Giants in 1993 to the Washington Nationals who oddly discharged Baker last fall after a 97-65 season.

At 1863-1636, Baker has more wins than several Hall of Fame managers, as a SABR quiz at the dinner noted. He might be bound for Cooperstown himself. But Baker didn’t take much time at the dinner to salvage his pride or list his managerial accomplishments.

Baker spoke of how, after last playing in 1986, he worked selling stocks for a year before getting a call from San Francisco Giants executive Al Rosen to come work for the team, as first-base coach.

He spoke of encouraging the Giants to hit a talented but uncertain young player Kevin Mitchell in the heart of the order, which Mitchell answered by smacking 47 home runs and helping carry San Francisco to the 1989 World Series.

And Baker spoke of getting to work with his childhood hero Bobby Bonds, whom the Giants hired as hitting coach shortly before they gave Baker the managerial reins.

Bonds’ tenure as hitting coach would prove short-lived in San Francisco.

“Sometimes, your hero don’t really like taking orders from his subordinate,” Baker said.

After a few more minutes of audience questions, Baker sat down to applause.

He’d stick around to sign autographs and chat with club members after. A potentially awkward evening in Granite Bay had been a raging success.

arbara Erysian has lived with the story since before she was 10 years old.

She doesn’t remember the first time she heard it, but the details — a man buried alive, children orphaned and starving, a global migration to escape the extermination of 1.5 million fellow Armenians — never left her.

Erysian, a Granite Bay resident, heard the story from her grandmother Alice Zerahian many times growing up. It was autobiographical, and always ended with a plea: “Tell your children. Tell your children’s children. Never forget.”

Now 55, Erysian knows she is descended from a survivor of the Armenian Genocide, in which the Ottoman Empire targeted a religious minority for annihilation by executions, death marches and other brutal tactics between 1914 and 1923. Taking her grandmother’s plea to heart, she has launched into a years-long process of turning Alice Zerahian’s story into a movie.

OLD TERROR, NEW HEADLINES

Alice Zerahian immigrated from Armenia to Massachusetts in the early 1920s and then moved to Fresno, where Erysian remembers spending time with her on holidays and week-long summer visits. As a math professor at Sierra College since 2004, Erysian hadn’t had much occasion to revisit her grandmother’s story until she saw TV reports of ISIS activity in 2013, and it stirred something in her memory.

“I felt that people should know somehow, and understand, this persecution is not a new thing — that this has been going on in that region for a very long time,” she said. “As a child I did not even understand what (my grandmother) was telling me, but she would tell me the story repeatedly, and it laid on my heart. Four years ago, I just realized that (sharing it) was something I needed to do.”

book would do it, she set about writing a screenplay. Erysian had never attempted such a thing before, so she started researching in earnest — not only history, but screenwriting and storytelling.

Around her grandmother’s story she had to populate an entire world of missionaries, supporting characters, soldiers and antagonists with their own backgrounds and struggles. The act of creation was a challenge, fulfilling the dramatic needs of a screenplay without compromising the reality of the story that inspired her in the first place. She also wanted to respect why the story resonates without leaning too hard on timeliness.

“There’s a lot of animosity still between the Turkish people and the Armenians, because to this day the Turkish government denies that there was a genocide,” she said. “It was important to me through this process to not make it political — to genuinely make it just her story.”

THE PITCH

Every summer, writers descend on The Great American PitchFest in Los Angeles to woo producers and investors with their dream projects. It was there that Barbara Erysian saw her window. Having spent the better part of two years on writing and research, she flew to Los Angeles in 2015 with a completed draft.

The title was simple: “Who Will Remember.” The pitch was quick, by necessity, limited to about five minutes. The audience each time was tired, having listened to who-knows-how-many love stories and pipe dreams that day. But where seven producers passed, an eighth, Max Freedman, had a vision.

“I work intuitively, so I was struck positively about it. I heard probably 50 or 60 five-minute pitches that day,” Freedman said. “I saw Barbara approach my table with her grandmother behind her, which was impossible since her grandmother had long ago deceased, but I could visualize her grandmother … (Barbara) just said really clearly to me what the story was, and I in-

stantly got it. It just clicked. For whatever reason, it was somewhat magical, I think.”

More than just a producer, Freedman, 73, is a Los Angeles-based filmmaker who makes his own movies through MFM Productions, the producing arm of his filmmaking and publishing company. Instantly sold by Erysian’s pitch in 2015, he spent most of the ensuing two and a half years refining Erysian’s original script.

“The first thing I did was read the script, and I was amazed that someone who teaches math for a profession for 30 years could achieve such poignancy the first time out,” he said.

Eventually the script scored a rare “recommend” rating from Slated, a professional script-analysis company, as opposed to “consider” or “pass.”

The next step was to budget and raise money for the project. As with most films, that’s where “Who Will Remember” hit its first snag, so Erysian suggested making a short film — a proof-of-concept to persuade investors to pay for a feature.

Freedman and Erysian had budgeted the feature version at $14 million, but a 15-minute short they could finance themselves for about $13,000.

WRITE GLOBAL, SHOOT LOCAL

To assemble the crew Max Freedman tapped Stephen Chollet, a two-time Emmy Award-winning video producer in Chico who then recruited most of the talent behind the camera.

continued from page 21 videos. But besides being an opportunity for work, he said, the project intrigued him. It was a learning exercise, as he didn’t know much about the history of the Armenian Genocide, and he liked that it was a dramatic short film with a documentary quality to it, like recreating history.

“It’s a true family story, and we’re bringing that to life,” he said. “(It’s about) bringing some awareness to that — as the name of the film says, ‘Who Will Remember.’ I think it’s an important project.”

Unable to shoot across the globe due to budget constraints, Freedman, Chollet and their crew found what they needed in and around Erysian’s home in Granite Bay. They recruited actors from Los Angeles, the Bay Area and Merced, shooting nine scenes in two days at three locations in January 2018: in Erysian’s house, at Folsom State Park (the north shore can pass for a desert, as Erysian pointed out), and on an impromptu set in Fourscore Coffee in Old Town Roseville.

They also consulted the His House Ministries Armenian Church in Rancho Cordova to be sure the costumes, props and other details were accurate. The church gave a blessing for the project on Jan. 7, and members were present for some of the filming. Lusine Aleksanyan, a member of the church whose first experience on a film set was watching the reenactment of a murder, found it eye-opening.

“It’s a lot of fun, but sad to watch at the same time, because it really happened,” she said. “I feel like more people need to know what really happened back then … how many people got killed, how women were treated, the kids, the men.”

LESSONS FROM HISTORY

One of the ironies of Alice Zerahian’s story is that she lived into her 90s, got Alzheimer’s disease and forgot everything in the end. But she survived the genocide to tell the tale, and her granddaughter has spent much of the past four years contemplating why it’s so important to remember.

“This movie is told from the perspective of a young girl and her little brother

who survived, and I keep asking myself two questions: one is, why did she survive, or how did she survive that genocide … and why me?” she said. “Why do I feel so compelled … to tell this story?”

A diminutive figure at 5’1”, perhaps Erysian relates to her grandmother in that respect. At least she marvels at the girl’s mettle in surviving what millions of others did not.

But Erysian never really found the answer to “why me,” save a few spiritual insights that amounted to, “It doesn’t really matter.” Though she’s not a screenwriter, or “Hollywood,” or even fluent in Armenian, she believes an important story was handed to her by her grandmother, and she’s doing something with it.

She hopes to see the short film completed by April 24, in time for a premiere at the Armenian church’s commemoration of the genocide.

“When 1.5 million people are killed for the reason (of) their particular culture, religion or ethnicity, and killed in violent and barbaric ways, I don’t think that it’s good as a human race for us to ignore those events or deny that they happened,” Erysian said. “I think people should know about those events, so we can learn from them.”

ne of the best compliments Joe Charity has received thus far for Ciao Restaurant came a week after it opened in early December.

An Italian man who’d lived in the U.S. for two years visited the restaurant “ready to hate this place,” as his wife told Charity, a co-owner. Poor imitations of Italian restaurants abound. But after the man finished his meal, as Charity recounted, there was nothing bad he could say.

Authenticity, Charity said, is one of the keys to Ciao Restaurant.

The Italian eatery and wine bar had its soft opening Dec. 7 at 1410 E. Roseville Parkway, with a grand opening one day later. Early returns, measured by Ciao’s average four-star Yelp rating, have been largely positive.

“We’re running a very smooth dining

experience,” said Amy Jimenez, another co-owner.

Ciao does a few things differently than many other restaurants in the area. Where some food establishments would be content to de-thaw pre-packaged offerings, Ciao makes the vast majority of its fare from scratch.

This means that a $4,000 machine had to be purchased so that prep cook Nigel Euler and others who work in the kitchen could prepare the several kilograms of pasta the restaurant goes through each day.

It means that sous chef Michael Prock must go through an in-depth process to prepare Calabrese pasta from scratch, incorporating oil, chopped garlic, meat and more into a creamy, aromatic dish.

“It’d be so simple to just pull something out of the freezer and put it in the micro-

wave, the oven, but that’s not what we wanted to do,” Jimenez said.

Ciao employs two people in its kitchen who have worked in Michelin restaurants and offers more than 50 varieties of wine, including a Sassicaia priced at $400 a bottle. Charity clarified, however, that this isn’t necessarily a high-end restaurant or wine bar.

“What we’re trying to do is give people access to sensation and taste,” said Charity, who noted that the restaurant encourages patrons to enjoy long meals.

Granted, this approach has drawbacks from an operational standpoint.

Charity said the restaurant has 130 seats in the building. Approximately 180 customers visited on Saturday night.

Thus, the biggest issue Ciao is currently experiencing, Charity said, is timing.

Slamming the kitchen with 30 orders at once isn’t ideal, Charity said, nor is refusing to seat patrons.

“I can’t tell people, ‘No, just stand by the door for 10 minutes’ because that’s not the way the restaurant works,” Charity said.

The management team of the restaurant represents somewhat of a conglomerate, with a mix of professional experience.

Two of the co-owners, Executive Chef Marc Riedel and Charity’s wife, Miranda Mulgeci each worked at The Place on Vernon Street before departing in early November to help open Ciao.

Jimenez works full-time in title insurance for the renewable energy industry, filling in at Ciao as needed. Charity also runs Roseville-based motorcycle repair business Red Bike, giving an interview for this story on Monday with motor oil on his hands.

The management team worked together to build out their restaurant in just a month, converting a former Lyon’s and doing much of the work themselves to save money. Now, they’re working together to offer an “authentic, stylish experience” for diners.

“It’s not rocket science,” Charity said.

“

t started in October, when Joanne Murphy had an empty nest to fill.

With three kids in college, she wanted a place to volunteer and heard about JustServe.org, where opportunities are listed by zip code. Within minutes she found one that resonated: helping refugees. Now she’s setting up their apartments and greeting them at the airport, often with eager volunteers in tow.

“At first, I wanted to hug them,” she said of a newly-married couple who arrived from Afghanistan. “But I wasn’t sure if I should. And then I just did it. When I let go, she hung on.”

Happy tears followed as Murphy — a case worker for an organization called Opening Doors, which helps immigrants, refugees and low-income citizens start new lives — brought the refugees to their new home in Sacramento.

After a background check and two hours of training, Murphy was one of many local residents who could help new arrivals to adjust. Others work as mentors to help underserved members of the community to make doctor appointments, register children for school and learn about American culture.

Opening Doors takes donations of furniture and stores them until needed, and members of the public also step forward with surprises such as tickets to Sunsplash and other local sites where new residents can take their families.

Dozens of Sacramento-area residents have come forward through Opening Doors to help refugees feel at home, bringing pajamas, blankets, toys, dishes and much more.

and made blankets to help out as well.

On Dec. 21, Murphy arranged for them to come along, helping to stock shelves, make beds and outfit the new apartment.

“Today I learned a beautiful lesson from these wonderful kids,” Murphy said.

“They are really awesome people, so full of love.”

Murphy plans to continue her involvement year-round. But many of the opportunities on JustServe.org require no special training, and can even include the whole family for just an hour or two of service.

Family-friendly, walkable living in the heart of Granite Bay

mack-dab in the middle of Granite Bay, a community known for lavish homes and gate codes, Grosvenor Downs provides a refreshing sense of simplicity — at least the way resident Angela Thompson describes it.

Thompson and her husband Dane live in Grosvenor Downs with their two young sons, Rex and Grant, and two dogs named Myles and Floyd, after moving here in 2012 from the Bay Area. Like many neighbors in Granite Bay, they sought a more financially realistic lifestyle and found it between Douglas Boulevard and Olive Ranch Road.

Though they looked in Shelbourne and in other neighborhoods closer to the lake, the Thompsons decided on Grosvenor Downs for its walkability. When the Thompsons’ first son Rex was a baby, it

Thompson, a runner, said her community is an active one. Neighbors walk their dogs, take the kids in strollers, run or bike. Having the neighborhood built around a circle is convenient, she said, because workouts have a defined beginning and end.

She also likes Grosvenor’s mature trees, which dot a relatively open landscape, given the neighborhood’s wide streets and ample lawns. Thompson appreciates the variety of homes as well. The homeowners’ association rules were drafted years ago and haven’t been changed, so dues are low compared to other neighborhoods — clocking in at about $44 a year, Thompson said — and regulations

was easier for the new mom to put him in a stroller and run a quick errand on foot, versus packing up the car and sitting in traffic on Douglas.

A half-hour walk to two shopping plazas at the intersection of Douglas and Sierra College Boulevards — which include a bank, pet store, dentist and restaurants — was hard to turn down. Part of the appeal is sheer convenience, but hoofing it to Safeway also helps offset their occasional commutes to the Bay Area for work. Thompson is a software engineer and Dane is an electrical engineer.

are lax. Residents can install solar panels, have pools and, in the case of one neighbor, even keep chickens.

But people still take good care of their homes and have pride in their neighborhood, Thompson said.

ALL IN THE FAMILY

Another perk of living in the neighborhood is that there are plenty of family-friendly events scheduled, especially around holidays. Though older residents have happy hour and children’s attendance is obviously discouraged, young families can take part in a Fourth of July parade, Christmas caroling and Halloween haunted houses that are scary enough to draw people from outside the neighborhood.

“Trick-or-treating is out of control around here,” she said. And in a community where roughly half the families

have elementary-age kids, according to Thompson, that comes as little surprise.

Since there are so many young families, Thompson has found that many of her neighbors are financially conscious, installing solar panels and drought-tolerant landscaping to cut down on utility costs.

The Thompsons also find their schedules reflected in their neighbors. Thompson describes Grosvenor Downs as a nice community of people who work, as opposed to other neighborhoods where many residents may be retired or don’t need to work to maintain their lifestyle.

In other words: down-to-earth, unpretentious, but well-kept.

Her only gripe? Most of the neighborhood kids are girls, leaving Grant and Rex without playmates besides each other.

“If you’re a 5-year-old girl, you’re set,” she laughed. “We’re hoping some kindergarten-age boys move in soon.”

hen we think of dessert wines, we normally think of ports, sauternes or late harvest varietals.

So what is ice wine?

Ice wine or in Germany “Eiswein“ is a type of dessert wine produced from grapes that have been frozen while still on the vine.

The sugars and other dissolved solids do not freeze, but the water does, allowing a more concentrated grape to be pressed from the frozen grapes, resulting in a smaller amount of more concentrated, very sweet wine. Ice wine production is limited to a minority of the world’s wine-growing regions where the necessary cold temperatures can be expected to be reached with some regularity. Canada and Germany are the world’s largest producers of ice wines.

Typical grapes used for ice wine production are Riesling, considered to be the noblest variety by German winemakers; Vidal, highly popular in Ontario, Canada; and the red grape cabernet franc. Many vintners, are experimenting with making ice wine from other varieties: whites such as seyval blanc, chardonnay, kerner, gewürztraminer, chenin blanc, semillion, pinot blanc, and ehrenfelser; or reds such as merlot, pinot noir, sangiovese and even cabernet sauvignon.

There are wineries that are trying to replicate the ice wine process by means of cryoextraction. This process is where the grapes are frozen with refrigeration and pressed. Winemakers subject grapes to temperatures around 20 degrees F (or -7 degrees celsius), and press them while still frozen. Ice crystals remain in the press, while concentrated juice flows out. The resulting wine resembles ice wine but is not recognized as a true ice wine.

Ice wine can also be served as an ice wine martini — equal parts of ice wine and vodka, chilled and garnished with frozen grapes.

Ice wine is a natural with salty hors d’oeuvres. The fruit flavors of the ice wine are enhanced by the salt, and the sweetness of the wine softens the salty notes in the food. This also makes ice wine a natural with salty main dishes such as smoked salmon with anchovy butter, salt cod canapés, curry dishes, et cetera. Ice wine is terrific with desserts, such as delicate cheesecakes or apple tarts, as long as the ice wine is sweeter than the dessert.

Starting out 2018 with great intentions and high expectations, the first few days go well. You’re making the time to exercise.

You’re eating vegetables and proteins. You’re avoiding sugar, packaged snacks and soda.

After day three, you step on the scale and find that the number has gone down! You’re making progress towards your goal and that feels good.

The next day something unexpected happens. You catch a cold.

It would only aggravate your illness to exercise in this condition, so you wisely take the day off. That night you find yourself eating comfort food for dinner. You are feeling sick, so it seems justified.

A week later you think about returning to the gym, but your cousin is graduating from the police academy and there’s a family celebration. A slice of graduation cake later, and you’re in no condition to exercise. As your insulin levels soar and your energy dips, you tell yourself that tomorrow is the day that you get back on track.

Tomorrow brings with it more unexpected turns, pushing your healthy lifestyle just out of reach.

There’s a very simple reason for this phenomenon: If you’re looking for an excuse, the universe will provide you with one.

Every. Single. Time.

“But I’m not looking for an excuse. Those things were out of my control. I wanted to stick with the program, but I caught a cold and then life got busy.”

If someone offered you a million dollars to stick with your diet and exercise program for six months, could you do it?

You bet you could! And you’d probably even do it for $100,000.

This means that if you had a great enough incentive, you’d stick with your program and get results. So right now, the incentive, the motive, the desire just isn’t great enough to protect you against all of the excuses that the universe has to throw at you.

Find your incentive. Results will follow. There must be a reason that you want to change your body at this time in your life.

Think about it until you have a very clear, very specific reason.

There is no wrong answer here. We all have our own personal motivator for wanting to achieve our best selves.

What is ultimately important is that your reason is specific and powerful to you.

Once you’ve determined what your motivation is, write it down where you can see it every day. Think about it, focus on it, don’t ever let go of it. Let 2018 be the year that you find your personal incentive that lasts a lifetime.
