ooking for a casual breakfast and lunch place in the area? Look no further than The Window Box Café. Recently ownership changed, but the same delicious menu is still available. Owner Minami Kim has been in the restaurant industry for 35 years and she’s ready to bring the community something new to enjoy. From her vast experience with Italian dining, cafeteria style for Sacramento’s Kaiser hospitals and breakfast eateries in San Jose, she’s looking to call The Window Box Café her next little business venture. “I was going to retire and then said, ‘I can’t do it,’” Minami said. “Then I saw this small cafe and here I am now.” First time patrons typically find out about The Window Box Café from driving down Five Star Boulevard or from the positive reviews on Yelp. The changes that Minami would like to make are not going to be sudden,
8
but rather updating things from time to time. The popular menu items stem from the breakfast menu with pancakes, eggs Benedict and omelets. “Nothing will change at the moment, I want to keep it the same for the clientele,” Minami said. “I will slowly make a few changes — edit it to healthier options.”
Currently, a variety of daily specials are offered to see how people like the options. Some healthier options may include omelets with mixed vegetables and a Mexican-style, Santa Fe omelet. She would also like to add healthy pasta dishes to the menu over time.

The restaurant space will also see changes over the year as Minami is looking at updating the seating inside and out on the patio.
“Outside we have two main doors, we don’t need both, so we would like to have one and then tear down the other one and possibly make it a little wine bar while guests wait,” Minami said. “I’m looking to attach the patio onto that area
so that people can wait over there, have a glass of wine. So that is what I am thinking right now.” She has applied for a beer and wine license so in the coming months, customers will be able to come in and enjoy brunch with Champagne and beer options. The final change Minami is working on is organizing and cleaning up behind the scenes. After taking over the business in December, she found the kitchen area needed updating. “Now it is getting much better,” Minami said. “Good food comes from a clean kitchen.” The ambience and main portion of the menu will stay the same, but the simple changes here and there will continue to attract new and old customers. •

hether getting home after a long day at work or craving something specific, it can sometimes be annoying to have to leave the house to get food. Or maybe the hassle of getting the kids ready to go out and eat is too much than just staying in. The beauty of technology has brought a sign of hope to this issue though. Be it ordering online, calling in for takeout, or using a food delivery app, the options make it easy for on-the-go individuals and families who find it easier to have food ready when they get home. Roseville has a lot of options to choose from when it comes to food. Whatever the craving, an eatery nearby is sure to deliver or offer takeout. Here are a handful of local independent restaurants that have these options.

At first glance, you might mistake the deep fried bananas at the Oriental Market for lumpia or fried egg rolls, but they’re just another example of unique tidbits you’ll discover at this store in Roseville. In particular, the store specializes in Korean, Japanese, Filipino and other Asian foods. Prepare to explore oodles of noodle varieties, soup mixes, unique flavors of chips and canned coffees, teas, coconut milk and fruit nectars. Also a dedicated smoothie station offers fresh fruit smoothies and boba drinks. If you’re stopping by for lunch or dinner, you can pick up fried fish, lunch plates and other hot food to go. Ice cream lovers can rejoice over the rare flavors such as banana with jackfruit, purple yam and more. What is boba? Boba or bubble tea is a Taiwanese teabased drink usually made with fruit or milk that has chewy tapioca balls (often called bubbles or boba) added to the bottom. The drinks often come with wide straws for sipping up the boba, where they can be chewed on or swallowed whole. You can find boba drinks available at many Asian restaurants. eople are getting taller. A study last year by eLife shows that 100 years ago the average height of an American man was 5 feet 7 inches. Now he is 5 feet 10 inches. Interestingly, the average woman was 5 feet 3 inches. Today she is 5 feet 4 inches. And Americans as a whole gained in body mass “a great deal.” However, these are just averages, which means there are those who are taller and bigger. Here opens a slew of questions but let’s discuss how to clothe the giants. Roseville and surrounding communities have an unfair advantage when it comes to clothing for tall men. Paul Wagner Big & Tall store in the same shopping center as Trader Joe’s, can nicely dress the large man. “We listen to customers,” said Jim Wagner, one of the store’s owners. “We have young guys and old guys from all over the area (shop here).” Wagner said they can typically fit men 6 feet 3 inches tall up to 7 feet tall
and carry sizes from extra large up to 7X. The largest man the store served, he said, was 7 feet 1 inch tall and both doors had to be open to get him in. Inside there are racks of business casual-type clothing carrying brand names such as Levi’s, Pendelton, Haggar and Columbia in the form of slacks, pants, ties, dress shirts, casual buttondown shirts, shoes, sport coats and suits. Even with the larger sizes, there is a tailor on staff and alterations are no charge for purchases made at the store, including suits. This way customers can get the proper fit. Wagner does not consider himself very tall, he’s 6 feet, but he seems to understand what towering people need. Out of all the men’s stores in the Roseville community, Paul Wagner is easily the oldest. The stores have been in the area since 1908 and at one time had 12 locations dotted along California from Chico to Bakersfield. Today, just the one store remains in Roseville, the most successful. Wagner has been working at

the store since 1960. He and his brother, John, have operated the business after their father had the store. Their father owned the store with a partner, Helen Richardson. “It’s one of the nicest stores in the area,” Wagner said. Despite online shopping and other competition, the store continues to thrive. And as the population grows taller, more customers are finding Paul Wagner for their clothing needs. “Our business holds up pretty good,” Wagner said. •

estled in the corner of Fiddler Green Plaza in Auburn rests the welcoming Assistance League of Greater Placer Thrift Shop. Residents from all over the area shop and donate gently used clothing, home merchandise and children’s toys. The thrift shop is the largest source of income for many philanthropic programs, and is staffed 100 percent by volunteers. Highlighted below are just a few of the ways in which Assistance League impacts the community. Operation School Bell is their signature program, providing 1,780 children with new clothing and shoes last year. Children attending the shopping events are referred through schools throughout Placer County.

“One boy told me recently, ‘this is the first time I have gotten a new pair of shoes,’’’ member Vicki Harris said, “We hear this all the time.” Last year the nonprofit delivered backpacks, school supplies and dictionaries to 3,354 school children, as well as tutored 265 students for 932 hours of classroom time. Assistance League of Greater Placer also provides scholarships for students in need who qualify. Last year they awarded $19,000 to graduates of alternative high schools. “The puppeteers present educational scripts that they memorize,” Vicki said. On the third-grade team, the puppets share the story of bullying. Students learn and interact with the puppets and take away life lessons. These presentations are very popular among the students and the schools have come to count on them each year. Competencies for Independent Living takes place at Koinonia Community School in Loomis. The school is part of an adolescent recovery program for foster youth aged 13 to 18. From January to May, volunteers visit weekly to teach students life skills, such as taking care of their bodies, their clothing, how to eat balanced meals, basic budgeting, preparing for job interviews and looking for an apartment. Most of these students have never been taught these basic life skills and look forward to the volunteer visits. Assistance League’s Dressing for Success program helps men and women with clothing for interviews and jobs. People in difficult situations and returning to the work place are recommend to the organization through work programs and adult education. Last year they assisted 100 adults. Assisteens is a new auxiliary of Assistance League of Greater Placer, which provides hands-on volunteer and leadership opportunities for teens to develop a sense of community responsibility, self-reliance, volunteerism and leadership. There is a Legacy of Literacy book drive where donations of new and gently used books are made to the thrift shop. The books will be going to local kindergarten through third-grade students, many whom have never owned a book. The drive will culminate 1 p.m. Feb. 24 with a special event in the thrift shop’s parking lot at 1263 Grass Valley Highway. The nonprofit organizes events annually to raise funds for their philanthropic programs, including a Bingo Roundup in April, Tea and Fashion Show in October, and the Annual Appeal. This spring, tickets sold for the May 27 Sacramento River Cats game will support the Assistance League of Greater Placer. Make sure to mention the cause. e are in the season to spend time with family, friends and colleagues. It’s also that time of the year to make sure to be prepared for what can occur in those interactions — the flu. Before worrying that you are bound to get the wretched virus that spreads like a wildfire, William R. Griffitts, doctor of osteopathic medicine at Sutter Auburn Faith Hospital provides tips for prevention: What to do if you get the flu and tips to stay healthy throughout the year. There is wide access to health care options. Just a few options include walkin care, primary care physicians and the William R. hospital emergency department. According Griffitts to Griffitts, look at your needs before going Sutter Auburn Faith out to save time, money and frustration. Hospital doctor of The first step when you are sick is to look at osteopathic medicine the symptoms. “Both flu and the common cold are caused by upper respiratory viruses, so the symptoms can be similar,” Griffitts said. “However, the hallmark of influenza is that it’s generally much more severe, with higher fever that typically lasts days longer, muscle aches, headache and cough.” He also explains that cold viruses typically cause a runny nose, sore throat, cough and a low fever, or no fever at all. With this, his advice is to schedule a visit with your primary care physician if you start to have flu-like symptoms. “If your health insurance offers a nurse line, that is also a good resource to get your questions answered regarding the flu,” Griffitts adds. According to Griffitts, many hospitals are seeing severe cases of the flu around the country and the easiest way to avoid it is to get the flu shot. Other methods for avoiding the flu is to wash your hands frequently with soap and water, for at least 20 seconds. Furthermore, using an alcohol-based sanitizer will also help to avoid the virus. If you are planning on being in a large crowd make sure to use antiseptic wipes, if unable to wash your hands frequently. If you do have the flu, make sure to cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when sneezing or coughing. Additionally, once you are symptom-free and feverless, stay home an additional 24 to 48 hours to prevent spreading the flu to others. “If you do get the flu, drink plenty of fluids, get a lot of rest and take over-the-counter medications for symptom relief, as directed by your doctor,” Griffitts said. “Stay home and avoid other people, especially those who are high-risk.” While there are many ways to avoid getting the flu and ways to help if you do get the flu, make sure to contact your physician or visit a local urgent care clinic. Be sure to take care of yourself throughout the year and schedule checkups regularly. •

the health benefits of chocolate By Paige Smith
V
alentine’s Day is here, and the chocolate is abundant in stores and wrapped in beautiful bows, ready to be gifted and consumed. The conversations can be heard throughout the office and in around town about the pros and cons of chocolate. Leaving people to wonder, what is the truth about chocolate? Where does it come from and how healthy is it really for us? Marie Barone, registered dietitian from UC Davis Health gave us the scoop on the truth about chocolate some of which a chocolate lover might not want to hear. “First, it’s important to note that health benefits are associated with cocoa, which comes from roasted cacao seeds,” Barone said. “Chocolate is made from cocoa with the cocoa butter also found in the cacao seed.” However, it’s the additions that create this delicacy is what makes it unhealthy. Marie Barone Barone explained that the cacao seed UC Davis Health already contains fat, when sugar and milk registered dietitian are added to it, this creates the chocolate to become higher in calories and fat and not as healthy. Before getting too freaked out, there are still the health benefits to discuss. The health benefits of cocoa come from flavonoids, which are nutrients found in plant foods. “These flavonoids may be beneficial to heart health by lowering cholesterol, helping to prevent blood clots, and lowering blood pressure,” Barone said. She does add that cocoa may benefit the brain. According to Barone, research shows that drinking cocoa improves memory and thinking, but does not prove that it prevents dementia. The pros and cons of chocolate conclude that the most sayings about chocolate, are myths. The most common myths being that chocolate can be enjoyed a lot, because it is good for us as well as dark chocolate is best. If chocolate is not consumed in moderation, weight gain, including diabetes and heart disease may occur. “Watch out for chocolate candy bars and desserts which will have a lot of calories, fat and added sugar and low amounts of the beneficial flavonoids,” Barone advised. If you are worried about calories and watching your intake on the chocolate this year, Barone suggests going for higher-end dark chocolate that has 70 percent or more cocoa solids, which provides more benefits. Like anything, if it is consumed within moderation there is not as much to worry about during this sweet holiday and year-round. •

Fall in love with Irish cream and cookies truffles T
ruffles are one of those deceiving desserts that look like they must have taken hours to make and years of experience. And, true, there are some truffles out there that are pure works of art. But if you’re anything like me, it’s the balance between simplicity, taste and presentation that makes me fall in love. When I think of truffles, I picture rows upon rows of chocolate pieces, resting in delicate parchment, behind a glass case in a bakery that is filled with the intoxicating smell of sugar. It’s hard to say no to such a decadent indulgence, especially when you have a recipe that can whip up a heap of truffles in a snap. It was the idea of a grownup cookies and cream treat that inspired me to make these Irish cream and cookies truffles. The Bailey’s is a sweet addition to the rich chocolate, melting together to form a creamy bite of delight. I also enjoy the austerity of this chocolatey twist on a classic truffle recipe. There’s
28
absolutely no baking involved. The hardest part is waiting up to two hours for the unformed mixture to chill in the refrigerator. During that time, I recommend putting on some music, making a cup of coffee and trying not to think about the rich, sweet treats that are clearly calling to you from the kitchen. If you try and form them too early, it makes everything a lot more difficult and sticky. You will know if the mix is ready to roll when it doesn’t stick to your palms. The cleanup is quick with only a few tools to clean; all the dirty work is done over parchment paper. If you chose crushed chocolate cookies, sprinkles, or nuts, be sure to press the topping firmly into the truffle as you roll it. Flaked coconut is especially difficult to use as it is dry and stiff. Another option is to save some chocolate pieces and melt them in a saucepan after the truffles had chilled in the refrigerator. Instead of rolling them in a topping, try drizzling the

chocolate over the rounded truffles and let it set for 10 minutes. This works well if it is white chocolate on dark or vice versa, creating a sweet, contrasting design. After you’ve perfected the Irish cream and cookies truffles, try swapping out the Irish cream with Kahlua and rolling them in chocolate sprinkles, powdered sugar or chopped hazelnuts. A variety of liquids can be substituted for the Irish cream or Kahlua and it’s fun to experiment with sweet liquors or brandy. With the amount of chocolate added, it’s difficult to make something less than delicious. There are so many variations that can be made to this recipe; the possibilities are endless. Truffles are wonderful sweets to bring to parties and can be kept in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
