ne in five Americans take their pet into consideration on Valentine’s Day according to a 2015 study by the National Retail Federation. For some, the day is a joyous day to celebrate all the love in their life, including their dog. For others, a dog can make a better date than a human. Either way, the love between owner and pet is special, so why not celebrate together? Here are a few stops to make for the big day.

riving throughout Loomis, you may find colorful patterns on the side of barns or homes. The designs are barn quilts, not a fuzzy blanket but plywood with a painted pattern designed by the Loomis Basin Barn Quilt Committee, organized by Jan Struble.

“A barn quilt is a colorful quilt pattern painted on a 4-feet-by 4-feet piece of plywood and mounted on a barn or historical building,” Struble said. “The first one I created was Citrus Beauty for Struble Ranch Mandarins.”

The display and passion for this project led Struble to organize a group of women in the Loomis Basin area who were part of a quilting club to join and create more for the surrounding area.

The group goes to meet with people who are interested in telling their story and what they would like and this gives the team the opportunity to get a pattern together to tell their story in a barn quilt pattern.

The process takes about a month so that the husbands can put together the plywood and pencil in the pattern and then the women can paint in the pattern.

“We only do it during the summer, so the paint can dry in the heat and a pattern forms with the colors,” Struble said.

Currently, the group has created 20 barn quilts for the Loomis Basin area and are always accepting applications; however, they are staying strictly local.

“We have said no to people before because we want to keep it within the community,” Struble said.

With the quilts staying local, it makes for an intriguing self-guided tour that takes visitors to view the barn quilts on different homes in the area.

While they are on private property, visitors can see them from the street and can take photographs.

A copy of the map trail can be picked up at Struble Ranch and the first barn quilt in the area can be seen there. Placer County is the third barn quilt trail in California, with the other two residing in Plumas County and Lake County.

“Once this becomes a chore, we will be done,” Struble said with a laugh.

7. The Red Road The owner, Judy Grayson, wanted the barn quilt to reflect her Native American heritage.

Native American’s represented by the red road followed the philosophy that the Creator teaches that we must live a life of truth, humbleness, respect, forgiveness, spirituality and honor Mother Nature and all her creations.

8. Mandarin Fruit Basket This fruit basket pattern was chosen to feature the original Poirier families mandarin fruit packing shed built in 1946. The racing banner border represents the families passion for race cars and motorcycles. They also have been involved in the 4-H community for many years, thus the corner 4-H symbol.

2. Lonestar The barn where the quilt is displayed was built in 1890’s by Barbara’s great grand parents, George and Mary Turner. Mary Turner owned a quilt with the Lonestar pattern, which was passed down to Barbara.

9. Alpaca’s All Around The Petersens own and operate an alpaca farm, and sell alpaca fiber products in their gift store on the property. The rainbow of colors surrounding the alpaca silhouette represents Peru where the alpaca originated, and where many of the items in their shop were handmade.

10. X Mark’s the Box Can be seen at the corner of Dick Cook Road and Hansen Road in Loomis.

This quilt pattern represents the wooden packing boxes marked with a blue and white X on the end, which identified them as belonging to the Struble Ranch.

Wooden boxes were used when picked fruit was taken into the Loomis fruit packing houses in the 1940’s.

Fall in love with

IRISH CREAM AND COOKIES TRUFFLES

T

ruffles are one of those deceiving desserts that look like they must have taken hours to make and years of experience. And, true, there are some truffles out there that are pure works of art. But if you’re anything like me, it’s the balance between simplicity, taste and presentation that makes me fall in love.

When I think of truffles, I picture rows upon rows of chocolate pieces, resting in delicate parchment, behind a glass case in a bakery that is filled with the intoxicating smell of sugar. It’s hard to say no to such a decadent indulgence, especially when you have a recipe that can whip up a heap of truffles in a snap.

It was the idea of a grownup cookies and cream treat that inspired me to make these Irish cream and cookies truffles. The Bailey’s is a sweet addition to the rich chocolate, melting together to form a creamy bite of delight.

I also enjoy the austerity of this chocolatey twist on a classic truffle recipe. There’s absolutely no baking involved. The hardest part is waiting up to two hours for the unformed mixture to chill in the refrigerator. During that time, I recommend putting on some music, making a cup of coffee and trying not to think about the rich, sweet treats that are clearly calling to you from the kitchen. If you try and form them too early, it makes everything a lot

more difficult and sticky. You will know if the mix is ready to roll when it doesn’t stick to your palms. The cleanup is quick with only a few tools to clean; all the dirty work is done over parchment paper.

If you chose crushed chocolate cookies, sprinkles, or nuts, be sure to press the topping firmly into the truffle as you roll it. Flaked coconut is especially difficult to use as it is dry and stiff. Another option is to save some chocolate pieces and melt them in a saucepan after the truffles had chilled in the refrigerator. Instead of rolling them in a topping, try drizzling the chocolate over the rounded truffles and let it set for 10 minutes. This works well if it is white chocolate on dark or vice versa, creating a sweet, contrasting design.

After you’ve perfected the Irish cream and cookies truffles, try swapping out the Irish cream with Kahlua and rolling them in chocolate sprinkles, powdered sugar or chopped hazelnuts. A variety of liquids can be substituted for the Irish cream or Kahlua and it’s fun to experiment with sweet liquors or brandy. With the amount of chocolate added, it’s difficult to make something less than delicious.

There are so many variations that can be made to this recipe; the possibilities are endless.

Truffles are wonderful sweets to bring to parties and can be kept in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

IRISH CREAM AND COOKIES TRUFFLES INGREDIENTS

1½ cups chocolate chips (semi-sweet, dark, milk chocolate) 1/3 cup heavy whipping cream 4 teaspoons Bailey’s (or any Irish cream liqueur) 3 tablespoons maraschino cherries, finely chopped Toppings: crushed chocolate cookies, powdered sugar, coconut, chopped nuts or sprinkles INSTRUCTIONS

1. In a medium saucepan, combine chocolate pieces and whipping cream. Cook over low heat stirring constantly until fully melted — may need to occasionally remove from heat if it begins to clump. Remove from heat; cool slightly. Stir in cherries. Mix in Bailey’s using a wire whisk until smooth. Chill for one to two hours, or until firm.

2. Lay a long strip of parchment paper on baking sheet or countertop. Using your hands, roll chocolate mixture into 1-inch balls. Cover in desired topping.

3. Truffles can be kept in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF CHOCOLATE

BY PAIGE SMITH alentine’s Day is here, and the chocolate is abundant in stores and wrapped in beautiful bows, ready to be gifted and consumed. The conversations can be heard throughout the office and in around town about the pros and cons of chocolate. Leaving people to wonder, what is the truth about chocolate? Where does it come from and how healthy is it really for us?

Marie Barone, registered dietitian from UC Davis Health gave us the scoop on the truth about chocolate some of which a chocolate lover might not want to hear.

“First, it’s important to note that health benefits are associated with cocoa, which comes from roasted cacao seeds,” Barone said. “Chocolate is made from cocoa with the cocoa butter also found in the cacao seed.”

However, it’s the additions that create this delicacy is what makes it unhealthy. Barone explained that the MARIE BARONE cacao seed already contains fat, when sugar and milk UC Davis Health registered dietitian are added to it, this creates the chocolate to become higher in calories and fat and not as healthy.

Before getting too freaked out, there are still the health benefits to discuss. The health benefits of cocoa come from flavonoids, which are nutrients found in plant foods.

“These flavonoids may be beneficial to heart health by lowering cholesterol, helping to prevent blood clots, and lowering blood pressure,” Barone said. She does add that cocoa may benefit the brain.

According to Barone, research shows that drinking cocoa improves memory and thinking, but does not prove that it prevents dementia.

The pros and cons of chocolate conclude that the most sayings about chocolate, are myths. The most common myths are that chocolate can be enjoyed a lot because it is good for us and dark chocolate is best.

If chocolate is not consumed in moderation, weight gain, including diabetes and heart disease may occur.

“Watch out for chocolate candy bars and desserts which will have a lot of calories, fat and added sugar and low amounts of the beneficial flavonoids,” Barone advised.

If you are worried about calories and watching your intake on the chocolate this year, Barone suggests going for higher-end dark chocolate that has 70 percent or more cocoa solids, which provides more benefits.

Like anything, if it is consumed within moderation there is not as much to worry about during this sweet holiday and year-round.

J

ust off Highway 49 lies one of the treasures of the Gold Country: the Auburn State Recreation Area (ASRA). A handful of caretakers have the privilege and responsibility of working there as California State Park Rangers.

Their office: The forests along the North and Middle forks of the American River.

For almost two decades, Scott Liske, has worked as a ranger, currently assigned to Auburn.

“We work seven days a week, about 14 hours every day,” Liske said.

“In summer we have longer shifts.

The day is usually determined by what happens or calls for service.”

Four field rangers work at the park, with Scott Liske as supervisor.

Unlike rangers in other states or agencies, California State Park Rangers are considered peace officers, so they function somewhat as a hybrid between a parks specialist and law enforcement officer.

Whether it’s crime, fire or other emergencies, the rangers are the first responders to any emergency that takes place in the park.

“If there are no emergencies or calls for service, then we’re on patrol,” Liske said.

Rangers in the California State Parks are there for three main reasons: protecting the park from the people, the people from the park, and people from other people.

PROTECTING THE PARK FROM THE PEOPLE

With the abundance of trees at the park, one might think chopping a limb or two for a campfire wouldn’t hurt. But it does — and it’s illegal. One way rangers protect the park for future generations is by patrolling for illegal chopping of trees. They’re also on the lookout for unauthorized or unchecked fires which can be devastating to the forest if allowed to get out of control.

PROTECTING PEOPLE FROM EACH OTHER

Sparks can also fly with disputes among visitors. When two parties arrive at a campsite at the same time, rangers sometimes get called in to resolve arguments.

Some places in the park offer beautiful views, but also come with dangerous cliffs or slippery rocks. The rangers try to prevent visitors from treading into hazardous areas with barriers and warning signs.

“We want everyone to stay on the safe side of all those areas,” Liske said. “We have a trail system. We want you to stay on the trail.”

Staying out and stay alive The rangers have aggressively promoted a “Stay out. Stay alive” campaign to warn visitors to not attempt to swim between March and early June, when snowmelt begins to trickle down the Sierra Nevada, amping up the speed while dropping the temperature of the American River.

“Unfortunately a common theme the last few springtimes is people entering the water when they shouldn’t,” Liske said. “And that could be because the water’s fast and cold, and they’re not prepared.”

Visitors who get too close to the water during this time can easily slip. Even in peak physical condition, people can be swiftly carried downstream, while at the same time losing the physical ability to swim due to the drop in temperature.

“All of these fatalities could have been prevented if the people hadn’t gone in the water,” Liske said.

But it’s not just the danger of heights, rocks or rivers that rangers are concerned about. It’s also the other residents who call the park home.

Creatures and critters at the parks Ticks: According to Liske, ticks are small creatures that have become a big problem in the Auburn park over the last 30 years. During the colder months, ticks are attracted to warmer bodies to hop on to. The black legged tick and deer ticks can carry Lyme disease.

“If you stay on the trails, you have a very good chance of not having any ticks jump onto your clothing,” Liske said.

Black bears: Much larger than ticks are black bears, the only species of bears left in California. They can be seen anytime of the day, particularly where human dwellings and the park meet.

“Bears are super industrious,” Liske said. “They want to find the easiest way to get their food.”

If you’re in the park and spot a bear, making noise either through clapping hands or using an air horn may ward off a bear, who usually isn’t looking for a confrontation.

Mountain Lions: Plenty of food and shelter provide a welcoming habitat for mountain lions. However, unlike bears they are rare to spot. Liske said he recalls only seeing three in his career, and he worked with another ranger in Auburn who never saw a single mountain lion in 30 years.

Mountain lions are elusive and tend to only be seen in the part around dawn or dusk. Liske estimates the rangers only get reports of one to two mountain lion sightings a month.

If you encounter a mountain lion, you should attempt to appear larger by opening flaps in your jacket or picking up your bicycle over your head. But don’t attempt to outrun a mountain lion.

“You need to be prepared to fight for your life,” Liske said regard confrontations between humans and mountain lions. Like bears, mountain lions often aren’t looking for a confrontation and will often walk away if spotted by a human. But if it starts acting similar to a house cat ready to pounce on prey, with ears folded back and tail swishing, it is likely preparing for an attack.

The last person killed by an attack in the ASRA was Barbara Schoener in April 1994.

hether it’s the smell of fresh earth beneath boots, or the commitment to protecting parks and people, a career as a California State Park Ranger is a calling some may consider.

“Auburn is a great duty assignment,” Liske said. “We have a incredible variety from day to day of what we do.”

Rangers and lifeguards in the California State Parks are considered peace officers, so they must take some of the same training any California peace officer would take, since they’re expected to perform the same duties.

In addition, they must complete two years or 60 credit hours worth of college courses. Most of the cadet training takes place at the Butte College Law Enforcement Academy in Oroville.

Liske said the only bad part of the job is that rangers often work when visitors don’t.

“The last fourth of July I had off was 1985,” he said.

While there is no explorer program similar to other law enforcement agencies, ride-alongs are sometimes available. More information about ride-alongs can be found by contacting a park recruiter at recruiting@ parks.ca.gov.

Junior Lifeguard Program The California State Parks Junior Lifeguard Program is a way for children to “test the waters” of serving at a California State Park. The program offers four-week training sessions just down the American River at Folsom Lake State Recreational Area.

“It’s a great program,” Liske said. “Kids like it because of the summer fun. They’re learning CPR … first aid.

They’re playing outside, playing games and doing physical fitness.”

DOGS “Dogs can be a rangers’ worst nightmare,” Liske said.

While dogs are supposed to be on a leash at all times in the park, often rangers will find them leash-free, chasing animals and running wildly on trails. Dogs aren’t much of a danger as much as a nuisance — barking, causing commotions and getting lost.

In Jan. 2008, Dewie, a golden retriever, was off leash and fell down a vent from an abandoned mine shaft. Thankfully, the Auburn Fire Department was called out and successfully returned Dewey uninjured from the shaft. The shaft was later filled with foam and featured in an episode of “Dirty Jobs” with Mike Rowe (Season 5, episode 2) which aired Jan. 2009.

“If you are snowshoeing at a cross country ski area, stay to the side of the trail where it is most packed,” Moore said.

“Avoid the middle of the trails and the grooves that are cut in for guiding skis and let the skiers pass.”

Tahoe Donner’s Cross Country Ski Center offers private lessons and tours for individuals and groups to learn the basic skills and gain knowledge about snowshoeing and the area. The center also provides marked trails and maps for those who don’t want a guide.

“If you really want something like this, you need to make it a part of your life or else it is not going to work,” Oviedo said.

Before worrying that you are bound to get the wretched virus that spreads like a wildfire, William R. Griffitts, doctor of osteopathic medicine at Sutter Auburn Faith Hospital provides tips for prevention: What to do if you get the flu and tips to stay healthy throughout the year.

Sutter Auburn Faith The first step when you are sick is to look at Hospital doctor of osteopathic the symptoms. medicine “Both flu and the common cold are caused by upper respiratory viruses, so the symptoms can be similar,” Griffitts said. “However, the hallmark of influenza is that it’s generally much more severe, with higher fever that typically lasts days longer, muscle aches, headache and cough.”

He also explains that cold viruses typically cause a runny nose, sore throat, cough and a low fever, or no fever at all. With this, his advice is to schedule a visit with your primary care physician if you start to have flu-like symptoms.

“If your health insurance offers a nurse line, that is also a good resource to get your questions answered regarding the flu,” Griffitts adds.

According to Griffitts, many hospitals are seeing severe cases of the flu around the country and the easiest way to avoid it is to get the flu shot. Other methods for avoiding the flu is to wash your hands frequently with soap and water, for at least 20 seconds. Furthermore, using an alcohol-based sanitizer will also help to avoid the virus. If you are planning on being in a large crowd make sure to use antiseptic wipes, if unable to wash your hands frequently.

If you do have the flu, make sure to cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when sneezing or coughing. Additionally, once you are symptom-free and feverless, stay home an additional 24 to 48 hours to prevent spreading the flu to others.

“If you do get the flu, drink plenty of fluids, get a lot of rest and take over-the-counter medications for symptom relief, as directed by your doctor,” Griffitts said. “Stay home and avoid other people, especially those who are high-risk.”

While there are many ways to avoid getting the flu and ways to help if you do get the flu, make sure to contact your physician or visit a local urgent care clinic. Be sure to take care of yourself throughout the year and schedule checkups regularly.

estled in the corner of Fiddler Green Plaza rests the welcoming Assistance League of Greater Placer Thrift Shop. Residents from all over the area shop and donate gently used clothing, home merchandise and children’s toys. The thrift shop is the largest source of income for many philanthropic programs, and is staffed 100 percent by volunteers. Highlighted below are just a few of the ways in which Assistance League impacts the community.

Operation School Bell is their signature program, providing 1,780 children with new clothing and shoes last year. Children attending the shopping events are referred through schools throughout Placer County.

“One boy told me recently, ‘this is the first time I have gotten a new pair of shoes,’’’ member Vicki Harris said, “We hear this all the time.”

Last year the nonprofit delivered backpacks, school supplies and dictionaries to 3,354 school children, as well as tutored 265 students for 932 hours of classroom time. Assistance League of Greater Placer also provides scholarships for students in need who qualify.

Last year they awarded $19,000 to graduates of alternative high schools.

Through Kids on the Block, member puppeteers go to local schools to teach students various social issues.

The puppets perform for students in kindergarten to third grade.

“The puppeteers present educational scripts that they memorize,” Vicki said.

On the third-grade team, the puppets share the story of bullying. Students learn and interact with the puppets and take away life lessons. These presentations are very popular among the students and the schools have come to count on them each year.

Competencies for Independent Living takes place at Koinonia Community School in Loomis. The school is part of an adolescent recovery program for foster youth aged 13 to 18. From January to May, volunteers visit weekly to teach students life skills, such as taking care of their bodies, their clothing, how to eat balanced meals, basic

budgeting, preparing for job interviews and looking for an apartment. Most of these students have never been taught these basic life skills and look forward to the volunteer visits.

Assistance League’s Dressing for Success program helps men and women with clothing for interviews and jobs. People in difficult situations and returning to the work place are recommend to the organization through work programs and adult education.

Last year they assisted 100 adults.

Assisteens is a new auxiliary of Assistance League of Greater Placer, which provides hands-on volunteer and leadership opportunities for teens to develop a sense of community responsibility, self-reliance, volunteerism and leadership.

There is a Legacy of Literacy book drive where donations of new and gently used books are made to the thrift shop. The books will be going to local kindergarten through third-grade students, many whom have never owned a book. The drive will culminate 1 p.m. Feb. 24 with a special event in the thrift shop’s parking lot at 1263 Grass Valley Highway.

The nonprofit organizes events annually to raise funds for their philanthropic programs, including a Bingo Roundup in April, Tea and Fashion Show in October, and the Annual Appeal. This spring, tickets sold for the May 27 Sacramento River Cats game will support the Assistance League of Greater Placer. Make sure to mention the cause.

Thoughtful, feisty and funny ELAYNE BOOSLER VISITS AUBURN

C

omedian, writer and animal activist Elayne Boosler, will perform Feb. 9 at Auburn’s State Theatre. Boosler has been named one of Comedy Central’s “Greatest 100 Standup Comedians of All Time,” and was recently recognized as one of Rolling Stone’s “50 Best Stand-up Comics of All Time.” Beginning July 2017, she can be on the CNN Comedy Series “The History of Comedy.”

Boosler is best known for her thoughtful and feisty socially conscious humor, and her love of baseball and animals. For more than 40 years, she has appeared on several TV talk shows, has written and starred in five of her own one-hour Showtime standup comedy specials, written and directed two movies for Cinemax, appeared regularly on HBO’s Comic Relief, and on Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher over 30 times.

For years, she has done TV and radio baseball color commentary, and sung the National Anthem and/or thrown out a first pitch. She hosts numerous fundraisers across the country for worthy animal organizations every year. She has toured Africa and the Middle East for troops, and does benefits that fundraise for veterans.

She has traveled the world doing standup from Las Vegas to the London Palladium to the White House Press Correspondent’s Dinner, to clubs and theaters everywhere.

She has performed for the Queen of England as well as the President and Congress at Ford’s Theater.

Boosler has been involved in hands-on animal rescue and advocacy since 1996, and in 2001 founded, and runs, her own nationwide and beyond, all-species animal rescue and advocacy nonprofit organization, (Elayne Boosler’s) Tails of Joy. SsingSsing is Korea’s top rock/folk fusion act. Formed when six musicians from diverse genres aligned creative forces, this eccentric band welds two totally disparate elements: rock band bravado and deep-rooted Korean folk. This is a dance concert with limited theater seating.

“Who The Hell Is Holly Miller?” chronicles the rise of an unknown singing sensation from anonymity to obscurity. The action takes place during a concert tour stop in out-of-the-way Pinedale, Wyoming, where Holly and her band entertain the locals with their assortment of songs. During the performance, there are flashbacks and interview sequences that tell the story of how the small town girl with big dreams got to this memorable night.
