The Dear Esther: choice of exterior siding is often a matter of personal taste, the same as with interior furnishings and colors. This may be why your inspector declined to offer an opinion. However, there are some practical considerations to be weighed, and in this respect, stucco affords some significant advantages.

1. Stucco is a very long-lasting material, good for the life of a building, and it generally

maintains its color and freshness of appearance for as much as 20-30 years.

2. Stucco provides thermal insulation against hot weather, helping to keep a home cool in the summer, especially if the exterior is a light color.

3. Stucco insulates against outside noises, making the inside of your home noticeably quieter than with exterior siding.

4. Stucco strengthens a home, providing additional structural rigidity.

This is because a stucco building is essentially encased in an envelope of wire and cement.

Among the disadvantages of vinyl and metal siding is a general tendency to cheapen the overall appearance of a building. From a distance, these materials offer the traditional look of wood siding, but up close they tend to feel and appear less substantial than conventional materials. Vinyl and aluminum are more fragile than wood or stucco, resulting in cosmetic damage that cannot be easily repaired. Manufactur-

ers of vinyl and aluminum siding emphasize that their products are guaranteed for as long as you own your home: a claim that pretends to be a lifetime guarantee. The rub is that people typically sell a house within three to seven years of purchase.

If you don't like the look of stucco (a matter of personal taste), wood siding or cement board siding are better choices than aluminum or plastic. However, none of these sidings will last as long or be as maintenance-free as stucco.

It's raining; Are you still conserving water?

I know, right? It’s the middle of winter and talking about water conservation seems unimaginable.

Unfortunately, it isn’t. Currently the Tahoe snowpack is the third lightest since 1981.

The latest snow survey result for the Tahoe Basin showed we were at 30 percent of normal for the date, compared to 67 percent this time last year.

Last year’s record rainfalls were so encouraging, some of you probably enjoyed a slight reprieve from being so stringent about conserving water. Well, those days look to be gone, at least for now. The new norm, once again, appears to be warmer weather and lesser precipitation.

So even though this week we have seen some rain and snow it isn’t look-

ing like it is going to be enough to get us out of the red. Our forecast is not looking too promising so this is a good time to remind everyone about making the effort to recycle water when possible.

Are you doing something to conserve water at your home? Perhaps it’s making sure the dishwasher or washing machines are completely full before running them; or saving water from your shower or kitchen to water outdoor potted plants.

When it rains, do you have rain barrels set up like my neighbor Karen? Are you

sweeping or blowing off your driveway instead of spraying it with water?

However you are conserving and/or reusing water it seems like it is something we all need to insert into our lifestyle.

According to Yuba.net our snow elevations are rising so even when we do get snow, we are not getting it at the lower levels like we used to, thus lessening our availability to water.

In the early '80s I worked at KXTV Channel 10. A re-

porter would be sent out to Blue Canyon to report on the snow, traffic conditions, etc. and there was plenty of it there.

Now, the reporters are at a much higher elevation to find that snow and when they do, the amount isn’t nearly as impressive as what was found in the '80s.

So even though it is still winter, I wanted to remind you we still need to think of Ways to Save our water because at this point, the

"D" word is starting to pop up and we all know, that a drought is out of our control; reducing water usage and recycling water isn’t.
