The Agua Caliente Cultural Museum presents “Singing the Birds” Saturday January 27

The Agua Caliente Cultural Museum is proud to present the annual Singing the Birds (Wikitmallem Tahxmuweh) with Emcee Michael Mirelez (Desert Cahuilla), from noon to 7 p.m.

Saturday Jan. 27 at Palm Springs High School.

This event is open to the public free of charge and celebrates traditional Native Bird Singing and Dancing.

“This year promises to be the largest festival ever” said Executive Director, Julia Bussinger “We are expecting more community members and a greater number of Native crafters selling their wares than in past years.”

Bird Songs are thousands of years old. Today the Cahuilla sing their songs reminding themselves of the connection to the land. Bird Songs are social songs that tell the stories of their combined experience as a people, from creation to migration and beyond.

A completely oral tradition, they were sung in a precise order that accurately accounted for the stories’ chronology, and depended on their transference from generation to generation. Men, women, and children all participate in dancing.

Singing the Birds has helped to reinforce Cahuilla traditional music and dance, language, history, food, kinship, and values.

Agua Caliente Cultural Museum (ACCM) was founded in 1991 by six esteemed leaders of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians who saw the need to preserve their Tribal heritage, including its collections of archival material and cultural items.

Today that facility serves over 20,000 visitors a year in downtown Palm Springs along with satellite cultural events, a research library, educational outreach programs all while helping to conserve the historic treasures of the Coachella Valley.

The bull elk was caught by the horns in a barbed wire fence. But lucky for the big bugler Oklahoma Game Warden Josey Branch was there, reports the Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC]. He was at the ready, drew his handgun from its holster, and took aim. The sharpshooting ranger

managed to shoot off the animal’s entangled antlers just above the base and than shot at the barbed wire. The elk was freed and ran safely off.

Social Security Matters

“Ask Rusty” - Suspending Benefits to Return to Work Dear Rusty: At age 63 I applied for Social Security benefits after double knee replacement. I am considering returning to work and am curious whether to stop benefits while working. Is it a better avenue to continue to receive benefits and monitor my total earnings and connect with Social Security as I reach my maximum earnings level? If so what is my responsibility to maintain proper correspondence with the Social Security Administration? And am I responsible to report earnings so I am not overpaid and penalized? I turned 64 on October 23. Signed: Returning to Work Dear Returning: I’m glad you’ve recovered from your knee surgery and are back on the road to working. I assume that when you applied at age 63 you claimed regular Social Security early retirement benefits. If that is the case, and if more than one year has passed since you started collecting benefits, you cannot suspend your benefits until you reach your full retirement age of 66. If less than a year has passed since you first filed, you can exercise the “do over” option and withdraw your application for benefits, but you’ll have to repay everything you have collected, including any spousal benefits

your wife may be receiving and any withheld income taxes. If you work before your full retirement age while collecting Social Security and you exceed the annual earnings limit ($17,040 for 2018), Social Security will withhold from future benefits $1 for every $2 you earn over the limit.

This is the case up until the year you will reach your full retirement age when the earnings limit increases substantially ($45,360 in 2018; the limits change annually) and the benefit reduction is less ($1 for every $3 over the limit). Any time you know you’re going to exceed the earnings limit, you should call your local Social Security office (find it at www.ssa.gov/locator) and let them know. They will compute the amount to withhold and take it out of future benefits.

If you don’t correspond with them (by phone is okay) about exceeding the limit, they will eventually catch up to you when you file your income tax return, send you a notification letter and withhold what’s due them from your benefits at that time. Basically the onus is on you to advise them you will be over the limit, but they will catch up to you if you don’t. Once you reach your full retirement age the earnings limit goes away and you can earn

as much as you want without it affecting your Social Security benefit. One final note: When you reach your full retirement age, Social Security will give you time credit for any months they withheld benefits due to you exceeding the earnings limit. That means that your benefit amount at full retirement age could increase slightly, essentially giving you back over time some of the benefits they withheld.

Brrr. Over half the country is being brutalized by cold weather, and unfortunately it looks like it’s going to be long-term. Spring will come eventually, but meanwhile we need to take care of ourselves, our homes and our pets.

OURSELVES ￭ If you have to go out in the cold, dress in layers. Don’t forget hat, gloves and thick scarf. ￭ Know in advance where the closest warming shelters are in your town. Keep a radio handy, plus batteries, for weather news. Carry a tiny flashlight in your pocket at all times, in case the power goes out. ￭ Don’t forget to eat! Drink plenty of water.

OUR HOMES ￭ Sprinkle road salt, sand or even kitty litter on your sidewalks and stairs. ￭ Keep your cellphone charged up. ￭ Close blinds and curtains against drafts.

Be sure the temperature inside is at least 68 F, because we seniors don’t feel the cold like we used to. If you run a space heater, don’t leave it unattended. If you leave the room, turn it off. ￭ Even if you live in an apartment building, beware any sink, tub or shower that is on an outside wall. Try to keep the faucets open so a small trickle keeps the water moving. ￭ If the worst happens and your pipes freeze, never try to thaw them out with any gadget that involves a flame. It’s time to call in reinforcements, like your plumber.

OUR PETS ￭ If you walk a dog, put a doggie sweater on it and get back in the house quickly. If you have a cat, keep it inside. Don’t let a pet stay outside, even if it has shelter.

Modernism Week celebrates Informal Elegance of the Desert Moroccan Modern Party, the Watergate Hotel, neighborhood tours and so much more

By Alison Elsner Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley’s signature festival is set to take place from February 15 – 25, celebrating the aesthetics, sophistication and creativity involved in midcentury modern architecture, art, interior and landscape design and vintage culture in our area and beyond. For the 13th year, the annual 11-day event will feature a wide array of events including the Palm Springs Modernism Show & Sale, tours of iconic homes in more than 25 neighborhoods, architectural walking, biking and doubledecker bus tours, a world-class series of film screenings and informative talks, tours of the historic Annenberg Estate at Sunnylands, a Palm Springs Walk of Stars dedication, classic cars, garden tours and nightly parties.

Mid-century modern, or “modernism,” is notable for its use of glass, clean lines, natural and manufactured resources and indoor/outdoor spaces.

It has become synonymous with a lifestyle of informal elegance and the suggestion that life is a series of classy cocktail parties and visually satisfying symmetry.

The movement actually started in the 1920’s, when visionary modernist architects started designing sleek,

modern homes. Especially apropos for the desert with the dramatic and multi-dimensional characteristics of the natural environment and surrounding topography, the aesthetic here is now known as desert modernism.

Technically, modernism is a rejection of tradition and pretense, especially after World War II when industry required the utilization of new, more natural building materials, designs and technologies, which is when modernism really hit its stride.

Modernism Week has found a way to capture the movement and continue to bring its beauty to thousands of participants.

Home and neighborhood tours during Modernism Week run the gamut, including Southridge at Sunset, Merito Manor: Iconic folded-roof homes

by Barry Berkus 1961, Sunmor Estates Midcentury Home Tour and dozens of others.

One of the highlights this year is the first-ever “Modernism Week Showcase Home - Moroccan Modern” tour. This one-of-a-kind custom built, 1975 home was designed by architect Hal Lacy and recently renovated by Thomboy Properties, featuring custom carved, 10 feet high double entry doors and dramatic architectural

details. Eight tours are being offered from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on February 18 for $40 per person.

Other newly added events this year include a panel and home tour produced by Atomic Ranch magazine and a tour of the rarely-seen Raymond Loewy House. Architect Frank Lloyd Wright will be the subject of several talks, and there will be a fashion show, “Spanning the Decades.”

There will also be a new Palm Desert Signature Home Tour. This firsttime tour of new century modern homes in South Palm Desert will reveal many homes which have, until now, been a well-kept secret.

A special highlight will be an illustrated talk on February 23 from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. by author Joseph Rodota, only $10 per person, who will discuss his new book, The Watergate: Inside America’s Most Infamous Address. Rodota’s book reveals the secrets behind the midcentury masterpiece that became synonymous with scandal, beginning with the first sketches

by Italian architect Luigi Moretti, who promised to bring a “touch of Rome” to America’s capital city. The book is an absorbing and meticulously researched history, which enthralls us with a remarkable cast of characters

set against the spectacular structure.

On Friday, February 16 the public is invited to attend a free dedication on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars for architect Paul R. Williams, one of the key architects (along with A. Quincy Jones and Donald Wexler) responsible for the iconic Town and Country Center in Palm Springs. The star ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. at the Palm Springs Art Museum Architecture and Design Center at 300 S. Palm Canyon Drive.

This year, Modernism Week will also offer “Hollywood Revisited: A Glamorous Musical Theater Extravaganza,” celebrating many of the great Hollywood films of the 1940s to the 60s, when Hollywood was closely associated with Palm Springs. This event happens February 22 at 6 p.m., and tickets are $50 - $65.

There will also be a new Architecture and Design Film Series. Created in conjunction with the American Documentary Film Festival (AmDocs), the Series will be held over three days on the big screen at the Camelot Theatres (2300 E. Baristo Road, Palm Springs) and will feature 26 films, documentaries and short films grouped into 14 programs.

Most programs are priced at $12, with the exception of two feature films. A special VIP screening pass, which provides entry to all films in the series, is available for $159.

CAMP, Modernism Week’s ‘Community and Meeting Place’ and headquarters, will be located in a dynamic tented structure on Palm Canyon Drive near Museum Drive. CAMP is a central location to meet, shop, dine, learn and relax between events and will feature programs with authors, designers and industry luminaries. It is also the ticket hub for the daily Premier Double Decker Architectural Bus Tour.

Many tours and lectures range from free to a few dollars admission for each. Prices for cocktail and dinner events run between $125 - $225, with many of these selling out quickly. But, with over 350 different events, including 85 talks, panels and educational presentations, there’s something for everyone, with limitless new ways to look at our desert and the movement that inspired much of our daily sensibility.

Many happy returns A Santa Clara, CA woman wasted little time after ringing in the New Year and hustled off to Costco to return her “dead Christmas Tree” and wound up getting a full refund, says the Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC]. Customers standing in line behind her at the Refund Counter were shocked that, as one shopper put it, “she had so little moral values

Recipe of the Week Kitchen Diva

This week's recipe uses a roasted chicken and a few simple ingredients for two meals. Serve the Herb and Lemon Roasted Chicken with your favorite sides for one meal. Reserve two cups of chicken meat and use it for the Creamy Lemon Chicken Pasta. One chicken, served twice, saves money!

By Angela Shelf Medearis SPEND LESS, SAVE MORE AT THE GROCERY STORE Benjamin Franklin famously wrote that "a penny saved is a penny earned," meaning that money not spent is money in your pocket. If saving money is on your mind these days, one of the best places to start is with your food budget.

Small changes in your shopping and food consumption habits can add up, helping you save lots of money.

Here are some tips for budget-friendly shopping: ￭ Compare brands and look at the cost of food per serving. If you will use all of it, the bulk or economy size is often (but not always) a better price per serving. Use a calculator to figure the actual cost per serving. ￭ Buy non-food items from discount stores. This includes pet food, cleaning supplies and personal-care items. You'll pay more for these at the grocery store. ￭ Stock up on non-perishable foods when they're on sale -- so long as you'll eat them and they won't go to waste. ￭ Purchase the store's brand of products as much as possible. Many large chains have private-label agreements with major food producers. It's the same product as name-brand labels, but with the store's packaging and a lower price. ￭ You'll pay more for junk foods and convenience foods: Ready-to-cook or already cooked foods are more expensive. If you prepare it yourself, you'll save money and have control over what goes in the food, such as less fat and salt. Nutritious foods are a better

value. Remember, the fiber in fruits and vegetables fills you up and keeps hunger away. ￭ Look high and low. Bargains are usually on the top or bottom shelves, not at eye level. ￭ Use coupons and track your store's loss-leaders -- low-priced items to get you into the store so you'll buy other higher-priced products. Different sections of the store are featured each week, and some stores have coupons near sale items. Stock up and save! ￭ Repackage large containers of food into smaller containers and bags. This will make foods more convenient to grab and go. ￭ Cook once, eat twice. Buy enough ingredients to cook more than one meal and freeze meal-sized portions. This also ensures that you'll use leftovers and won't waste food.

￭ 1 (5 1/2 pounds) chicken ￭ 1 1/2 teaspoons Kosher salt ￭ 1 1/2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper ￭ 1 small yellow onion, cut in half and peeled ￭ 1/2 lemon (reserve the rest for 2nd recipe) ￭ 2 cloves garlic, peeled (reserve the rest for the 2nd recipe) ￭ Olive oil for drizzling ￭ 2 tablespoons poultry seasoning Heat oven to 425 F. Line a rimmed sheet tray with parchment paper.

Pat the chicken dry with paper towels. Place chicken on sheet tray. Sprinkle salt and pepper inside and outside of the chicken. Place the onion, half a lemon and the garlic into the cavity of the chicken. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle the poultry seasoning on the outside of the chicken and rub the mixture all over the chicken.

Roast chicken for 1 1/2 hours, until the juices run clear and a thermometer inserted in the thickest part of the thigh reads 165 F. Remove from oven and rest for 20 minutes before carving.

Makes 4 servings.

CREAMY LEMON CHICKEN PASTA ￭ 1 pound penne or ziti ￭ 3 ounces cream cheese ￭ 1/4 cup heavy cream ￭ 1 small clove garlic, finely chopped ￭ 2 teaspoons grated lemon zest ￭ 2 tablespoons lemon juice ￭ 2 tablespoons poultry seasoning ￭ 1 teaspoon salt ￭ 1 teaspoon ground black pepper ￭ 1/8 teaspoon red pepper flakes ￭ 2 cups frozen peas, thawed ￭ 2 cups cooked, skinless, shredded chicken Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil over high heat. Stir in pasta and cook according to package directions.

Using a small bowl, mash cream cheese, cream, garlic, lemon zest, lemon juice, poultry seasoning, 1/2 teaspoon of the salt and pepper and the pepper flakes together with a fork.

Set aside 1/2 cup of the pasta cooking liquid and drain pasta. Return pasta to pot and add cream cheese mixture, peas and chicken. Stir in cooking liquid.

Season with remaining salt and pepper.

Makes 4 to 6 servings.

Peggy Sue: Chihuahua –Pug, Adult, Female Hi, everyone! My name is Peggy Sue and I’m about a year old female Pug/Chihuahua mix with possibly a little bit of Doxie thrown in. That makes me very interesting with my smooth apricot coat. I weigh approx.

22 pounds and I’m a happy girl–take a look at my picture and you can see I’m smiling–don’t I look cute when I smile?

I wasn’t always smiling because life didn’t go as I wanted it to–someone who was supposed to love me didn’t and just dumped me in La Quinta.

It was very scary for a young and trusting girl like myself. Luckily, I

had enough sense to try and enter a country club where some kind person brought me to Pet Rescue. I’m smiling again because I feel safe now and everyone has been so nice to me.

I’m so happy here that I’m giving out lots of kisses–come visit me if you want one! Plus, I have lots of toys to play with and I’ve made new friends– what could be bad?

I’m also happy because I have my own “condo” that I keep clean and tidy–I have manners even if my former owner didn’t! I get along with people and I’m working on getting along with other dogs. The only thing missing is my forever home where I’m cherished, taken care of, and never let go–there’s nothing I want more. Could you do that for me? I sure hope so!

I’m spayed, up-to-date with vaccinations, and microchipped.

Swing ‘N Hops returns to Palm Desert First Weekend in February Swing ‘N Hops kicks up its heels on El Paseo on February 3, 2018 making a fun-filled return to the “Rodeo Drive of the desert” for its third year as a PD First Weekend featured event.

This outdoor street party celebrating swing dance, craft beer, and art begins at noon on Saturday, February 3, El Paseo will be closed between San Pablo Avenue and Larkspur Lane, for the free five-hour dance party that transports guests to a time when swing was king.

The Jennifer Keith Quintet is back, providing music that will have everyone jitterbugging and Lindy hopping all afternoon. For swing new-

bies, free dance instruction will be available at the event. Attendees are encouraged to revive the glamour of the swing era by wearing fun fashion representative of the 1920s through 1940s. Hair stylists and retro headbands will be available to help the ladies with their pin-up victory rolls.

There will be a costume contest at 2:00 p.m. and a swing dance contest at 3:30 p.m. with prizes provided by El Paseo retailers including Uno de 50, Savory Spice Shop, Pacifica, Body Deli, L’Occitane, Spectacular Shades, Cactus Flower Shoes, BG’s, Bare Minerals, and more!

event will allow attendees to mingle and enjoy their hops rather than being confined to a beer garden. Local brews from Coachella Valley Brewing Company, La Quinta Brewing Company, and Babe's Bar-B-Que & Brewhouse will be available for purchase.

In addition to a multitude of food and retail vendors, party goers will be able to get creative at interactive art exhibits throughout the event and check out classic autos from the swing era courtesy of El Paseo Cruise Night.
