Use a lint-free cloth to buff it off, revealing a layer of steam-proof protection that lasts about a month. So good when you need a mirror to get ready in the morning.

• When transporting any type of bottle or jar that could leak, simply place a small piece of plastic wrap over the open end, then close the bottle tightly. This will work for most screw-top containers to make them leak-proof. Snap-down lids should be secured with strong tape or placed into a larger sealable bag, like a zipper-seal plastic baggie.

• Before you go out shopping, take a minute on your phone while on the WIFI at home to search your email and websites for sales and coupons. Screenshot coupons so that the barcodes are clearly visible. This will save you downloading time while you are out and about, as well as serving as a reminder of the sale items you want to look at.

Social Security Matters

“Ask Rusty” - Applying for Social Security Disability Benefits Dear Rusty: My question is how to apply for disability? I suffer from facial dystonia of both eyes, non-diabetic neuropathy in both feet and lower legs and have a hearing loss related to my occupation as a police officer (now retired). I also suffer from an old injury that occurred while on duty to my lower back which inhibits my ability to lift anything very heavy or be on my feet for very long. Can you please help with the procedures for filing for disability with Social Security? Signed: Disabled Public Servant Dear Disabled Public Servant: First, I’d like to point out that Social Security Disability isn’t available to anyone who has already reached their Social Security “full retirement age,” or “FRA.” You didn’t tell me your age, but if you were born anywhere from 1943 to 1954 your full retirement age for Social Security purposes is 66 (up to 67 if your birth year is later).

If you’re older than your FRA now, you can no longer apply for SSDI; in fact, any-

one on SSDI automatically converts to retirement benefits when they reach their full retirement age. If you’re younger than your FRA and totally disabled, you can apply for SSDI benefits. You should be aware that about 2/3rds of initial applications are denied, but there is an appeals process you can pursue if that happens. It could take several months for an initial decision and, if denied, 1 to 2 years for the appeals process to play out. Be aware too that the qualifications for SSDI are quite stringent, including not only that you’re physically disabled but also that you have earned disability benefits by paying SSDI premiums via withheld FICA taxes from recent employment. Your entitlement to SSDI benefits can expire; you must have worked in SS-covered employment at least 5 of the last 10 years to be eligible.

As you can see, SSDI can be quite complicated which is why many people choose to engage a Social Security Disability lawyer to facilitate the process. An SSDI lawyer

should not charge a retainer or any upfront fees and Federal law limits the amount a disability lawyer can charge in contingency fees. The fee is limited to no more than 25% of any retroactive benefit you are awarded up to 12 months or $6,000, whichever is lower. The amount of back pay depends on the onset date of your disability and when you filed for your benefits.

Lawyers’ contingency agreements do not require you to pay any fees unless you win; however some attorneys will charge a nominal fee for expenses such as paperwork, regardless of whether or not you win. Be sure to check the agreement before you sign it.

Senior News Line Don’t Let Others Hijack Your Retirement For too many of us, retirement doesn’t necessarily mean taking the time for things we want to do and for rest and relaxation. Instead, the word “retire” means that others assume we’ll have lots of time to do things for them. The expectations can start the instant we retire, and our calendars can fill up astonishingly fast, if we let them.

Volunteering, babysitting grandchildren, walking someone’s new dog in the afternoon ... their to-do lists for us can be endless. Because, you see, we have the time to help, now that we’re retired. And we don’t want to be rude ...

Except, maybe that wasn’t the plan. There are steps we can take to forestall the tendency of people to want our time, stopping it before it gets started. We have to, if we’re going to rescue our retirement.

• Don’t make promises when approached.

Start with saying “maybe” and add a lot of qualifiers. Maybe you’ll eventually think about volunteering at the elementary school.

Maybe next year you’ll consider shelving books at the library.

• “I have other obligations,” can be your new operative phrase when someone tries to pin you down, and don’t elaborate.

• “I’ve decided not to do any volunteer work for the first year.” Notice the operative word?

“Decided” is a statement that you won’t be coerced. And delete from your vocabulary the words, “I’m sorry, but ...” That weakens your position and sounds like there’s wiggle room.

• Unplug your phone whenever you need to. Maybe that’s every afternoon when you know an employed neighbor will be calling to ask if you’re going to the grocery store.

Just don’t be available.

Because remember, your retirement isn’t endless. Write that on a small card and tape it to the mirror where you’ll see it every day.

Polo in the Desert

The ultimate spectator sport, from tailgating to clubhouse dining

By Alison Elsner It’s perfectly alright not to know what a chukker is. A great way to learn is to become a spectator at the exciting polo matches during the winter season of play here in the Coachella Valley. The Empire Polo Club and Eldorado Polo Club, both located in Indio, California, are spectacular venues that host polo matches which are open to the public. The season, which started on January 7, runs through April 1, 2018.

Background Polo, a team sport played on horseback, is believed to have been played by mounted nomads of Iranian and Turkic origin in Central Asia, between the 6th century BC to the 1st century AD. The modern game of polo is derived from Manipur, India, and the first polo club was established in Assam, India, in 1833. In 1862 the oldest polo club still in existence, Calcutta Polo Club, was established by two British soldiers who later shared the game in England and worldwide in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. British settlers in the Argentine pampas started practicing polo where the game spread across the country. Argentina is credited globally as the capital of polo, and Argentina is notably the country with the largest number ever of 10 handicap players in the world.

The objective of polo is to score

goals against the opposing team by driving a small hard white ball into the opposing team’s goal using a long-handled wooden mallet, played on a grass field of 300 by 160 yards. Each polo team has four riders and their polo ponies (which are full grown horses). The modern game usually lasts one to two hours and is divided into periods called chukkers (or “chukkas”). Polo is played professionally in 16 countries, and it was an Olympic sport from 1900 to 1936.

Our two local polo clubs offer delightful ways to appreciate this spirited sport, admire the athleticism of the players and the horses and likely make some new field-side friends.

Empire Polo Club General admission is free to all of the polo games, which are played at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. every Sunday. There is a $20 per car parking fee for general admission, and tailgating is popular (Tailgating parking spaces are firstcome, first-served). On weekends, breakfast, lunch and dinner are available at the Tack Room Tavern (also great for a refreshing beer or lemonade in between matches), and Polo Pizza Co. serves up gourmet pizzas, appetizers and salads.

Tailgaters and general admission guests are welcome to bring in their own chairs, sun umbrellas, blankets and picnic fare. Bleacher seating is also available as part of general ad-

mission. Guests can bring their doggies as long as they are on a leash.

VIP seating, with tables under a tent on the west side of the polo field, is available for $30 per person for the entire day, including VIP parking. You can’t bring your picnics or outside food and drink for the VIP section, however, there is food and beverage service. Reservations are recommended, especially for groups, by calling 760-393-7298.

Friday Night “Polo Under the Lights” games will be held on at 5:30 pm on February 9 and 6:30 pm on March 16 and March 30. Admission and parking are free on Friday nights. There isn’t any VIP seating on Fridays, so all parking and tailgating are on a first-come, first-served basis. Once again, guests are welcome to bring chairs, blankets and picnics for tailgating, and beverage service is available on the east side of the field.

There are also permanent restrooms.

The entrance to the Friday night polo field is different than that for the Sunday matches, so be sure to check the website for instructions and maps prior to heading over.

berm, on the sidelines of the field, and take-away food and beverages are sold at the Clubhouse Courtyard. It’s also fun to reserve a table at the Clubhouse Restaurant for $10 per person to enjoy an a la carte lunch menu along with full table service and a full bar. Reservations should be made in advance by calling 760-831-7656.

Guests can also veer on over to the field-side Cantina, which is a happy gathering spot for snacks and drinks during and after the games. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served on the Cantina patio along with a full bar and viewing of sporting events up on the big screens. The Cantina is open during times when polo is not in play, too, Tuesday through Sunday from 8 a.m. until late evening.

Saturday polo matches at El Dorado are also open to spectators starting at 10 a.m. on the Cantina patio. These “Weekend Polo on the Patio” matches will run through March 25, however full season with Sundays open to the public will run through April 1, just like at Empire.

By Angela Shelf Medearis FLU FIGHTERS Cold and flu season has arrived with record numbers of sick children and adults. There are antiviral medications available for the flu, but to be effective they must be taken within two days of the onset of symptoms.

Antiviral medications don’t cure the flu, but may make the symptoms less severe. Your health-care provider can help you decide whether you should take antiviral medications.

If in spite of all your efforts you become ill, take good care of yourself.

Get plenty of rest, drink lots of fluids and pay attention to your symptoms.

The common cold, the flu and pneumonia can have similar symptoms.

Mistaking one for the other can mean serious complications. Don’t gamble with your health. Contact your health-care provider immediately!

Of course, a flu shot is the best way to keep from getting some strains the flu, or to at least lessen its intensity if you do catch it. If can’t get a flu shot, a pneumonia shot can protect you against this potentially serious flu complication. It’s a one-time shot for anyone age 65 or older. Younger people with heart and lung diseases, diabetes or weak immune systems also should get this shot. Check with your or your child’s health care provider before you get any of these shots.

While there are no guarantees, there are some things you can do to reduce your chances of becoming ill: • Wash your hands often, particular-

ly when you are around people who have colds or coughs.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. This is a common way that germs spread.

• Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing.

• Avoid close contact with people who are sick. And if you’re sick, stay home. Keeping your distance from others will protect them from getting sick too.

• Sanitize utensils, toys, equipment and furniture. This can help reduce the spread of colds, which then reduces your risk of developing more serious complications like pneumonia.

• If you’re generally in good health, your immune system is better able to fight off illnesses. Get plenty of rest, exercise, eat right and learn how to manage your stress.

• Chicken soup is an old remedy for fighting respiratory illnesses; however, some recent scientific tests show that it actually may have medicinal value. Chicken soup has been found to be more effective than other hot liquids to increase the movement of nasal mucus. It also improves the function of cilia, tiny hairlike projections in the nose that prevent contagions from entering the body.

Eating chicken soup also inhibits the movement of a common white blood cell called neutrophils that defends against infection. By inhibiting the migration of these infection-fighting cells throughout body, chicken soup essentially helps focus the cells to reduce upper-respiratory cold symptoms.

This recipe for Chicken Noodle Soup with Lemon and Ginger will help you through this frigid flu and cold season! Be well!

CHICKEN NOODLE SOUP WITH LEMON AND GINGER • 1 lemon • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro or flat-leaf parsley or basil leaves • 1 teaspoon finely grated fresh ginger • 2 serrano chiles, stemmed, halved and seeded • 6 cups homemade or canned lowsalt chicken broth • 4 ounces fresh Chinese egg noodles (look in the produce section of your supermarket) or 4 ounces dried vermicelli noodles • 1 medium carrot, cut into small coins • 1 to 2 tablespoons fish sauce • 1 boneless, skinless chicken breast half, cut into 1/4-inch-thick slices (this is easier if the chicken is partially frozen) 1. Finely grate 1 teaspoon of zest from the lemon and put in a small bowl.

Add the cilantro, parsley or basil leaves and the ginger, and mix together. Cut the zested lemon in half and squeeze it into a small bowl to get 3 tablespoons of juice. Thinly slice two of the chile halves crosswise.

2. In a large saucepan, bring the broth to a boil over medium-high heat. Add the lemon juice, noodles, carrots, fish sauce and the 2 remaining chile halves to the boiling stock.

Palm Springs City Council Approves Hiring of 12 Additional Public Safety Officers Thanks to Passage of Measure D Residents and businesses can expect six additional firefighter paramedics, four additional police officers for downtown and two police community service officers coming soon thanks to the passage of Measure D, a half-cent sales tax increase approved

by Palm Springs voters in November.

On Wednesday night, the City Council unanimously approved the hiring of the 12 additional public safety officers, which will to help improve emergency re-

sponse times and serve the newly revitalized downtown core where a new hotel and new dining and retail are already drawing more and more residents and visitors.

“With the passage of Measure D in November, Palm Springs is now able to increase our safety services,” said City Manager David H. Ready.

“This is very good news and the City of Palm Springs would like to thank our residents for their continued support.”

Hello, everyone. My name is Cecil and I’m a male Schnauzer mix who’s about 5 years old. I weigh about 20 pounds and. my coat is gray and white. My coat had to be shaved because it was so unkempt and matted. When it grows in, I’ll start looking more and more like a Schnauzer and you’ll really see how goodlooking I am. My girlfriend and best friend, Cutie, thinks I’m quite handsome even now!

Cutie and I were found wandering the streets of Coachella and a very kind person brought us to Pet Rescue.

Cutie and I are in love and must stay together. We can’t be separated because we’re so bonded and she’s the love of my life. I would be very upset if

I didn’t have my Cutie with me and I know she would be just as upset if she didn’t have me. We need that special person who understands that and would be willing to provide both of us with our furever home. Could that special person be you?

I’m also a real sweet guy who loves to be held and petted. I blossom when that happens and I love to kiss the person who does that to me. You can ask Cutie and she’ll tell you what a great kisser I am! I’m also a bit energetic and I love being given space to exercise–Cutie enjoys that too. We could also all take walks together!
