Making an electrical problem understandable built, and our contractor refuses to install a light fixture under the cabinet that is above the laundry sink. He says that is not allowed by code. We’ve looked in the code books and cannot see anything that would prohibit a light fixture at that location. Can you shed any light on this?

Dear Barry:

I've got a problem that's so technical, I hope I can explain it clearly.

According to the home inspector who checked my house, my electric service panel is used as a "raceway," whatever that means. He reported this as substandard wiring and recommended evaluation by a licensed electrician. When the electrician checked the system, he found some additional problems needing repair, but said that it was OK to use the panel as a raceway. I'd appreciate a better understanding of this raceway issue if you can boil it down to layman terms.

Let's begin with a simple definition. According to the electric code, a "raceway" is "an enclosed channel designated expressly for holding wires ... ." Typically, raceways consist of pipes known as conduits, and enclosures known as junction boxes. In most cases, the use of a service panel as a raceway is

Your builder is probably concerned about the possibility of someone being shocked if they touch the electric light and the sink faucet at the same time. Ask the builder if he would agree to install a light fixture that is wired to a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) in order to eliminate any shock hazard.

Another option would be to install a low-voltage light fixture.

What does biodegradable really mean?

Happy 2018 Everyone. Hoping the year has started off well for you and looking forward to another year of finding Ways to Save our environment, health, time, money, sanity and anything else you are interested in saving.

My friend Martin and I were having a conversation about biodegradable soap. He was reading "Two Winters in a Tipi," a book by Mark Warren. Mark lived in a Tipi for two years, using creeks and streams to bath in, but when using soap, would go onto dry land to rinse off. Why did he do this? Because, all soaps, u n-

fortunately even biodegradable ones, can contaminate fresh water sources. Using a biodegradable soap doesn't reduce its immediate environmental impact ... it just means that the soap will biodegrade in time.

I didn’t. So as the saying goes, "curious minds want to know" and this mind wanted to know more about biode g r a d a ble soap in o u r

creeks and streams.

When out in the wilderness camping, backpacking or on a boat in the river or lake, when we use biodegradable soap or shampoos we aren’t necessarily helping the environment — at least if you use the product in the water.

First, what does biodegradable mean? By definition it means, “capable of being decomposed by biological agents like bacteria." Materials are usually deemed biodegradable if they break down to at least 90 percent H2O, CO2 and biomass within six months, although some materials may take years to biodegrade. Keep in mind that biodegradability doesn't necessarily mean environmentally friendly.

Biodegradable soap is NOT biodegradable when it ends up in a river or lake because it requires soil for it to breakdown properly. If you need to use soap, rinse off 200 feet away from any water source. This way the biodegradable soap will biodegrade.

Here are a few things

appraisal to act as the security blanket backing up the risk with the proven information set forth. Yet it is also believed to aid a buyer in not overpaying for a property.

There are several reasons an appraisal may produce a lower amount than the buyer’s purchase price. For instance, an incorrect comparable property, an appraiser from out of the area may not grasp the true value, misreported square footage, not all the amenities correctly calculated, comparison using short sales and bank
