It’s the 21st Century and many of us have given up on the practice of making what we think are futile resolutions, according to the Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC].

But, perhaps we should heed the words of philosopher Alex Epstein: “It is a sad irony that those who write off New Year’s resolutions because so many fail reinforces the passive approach to life

that causes so many resolutions-and so many other dreams-to fail. The solution to failed New Year’s resolutions is not to abandon the practice, but to supplement it with a broader resolution-a commitment to a goal-directed life.”

Each year about this time Americans make promises they know they will not keep. would not “ring the stewardess button on airplanes just to get her phone number.” And, one faithful employee said “I will not bore my boss with the same excuse for taking leaves. I will think of some more excuses.”

Now Here’s a Tip

By JoAnn Derson • Got a calendar that has wonderful pictures but the dates from last year? Cut out the pictures and have them laminated. You can use them as placemats for all kinds of things.

• Here’s a travel tip: Insert a tablet into a large plastic bag and hang it from the headrest to make the back seat a theater seat on road trips.

If the middle seat is empty, make a slide-proof tray to keep snacks and other items corralled.

At one end of a plastic bin (try a shower caddy from the dollar store!), cut slits through both bottom of sides, then thread the middle seat’s lap belt through it. It should stay put!

• “To make any photo a magnet for your fridge, simply glue it to those thin business magnets you get from time to time. There’s always one for a law office on the front of my phone book. I just print out a picture and trim it to fit the magnet. Done!” – T.D. in Alabama • Make a cup (or bottle) cozy by cutting the top and bottom off of an odd sock. It slips on, and the cup stands on its own. Slip water bottles into long socks to keep the condensation from affecting other items in your bag or backpack.

• “Freshen or dust stuffed animals by putting them through the dryer for 20 minutes. Secure small ones inside a pillow case for extra security.

Social Security Matters

“Ask Rusty” - Losing Benefits You Have Earned Dear Rusty: I’m 73 years old and have finally decided to call it quits from working and start taking life easy. My wife is 72 and has never worked outside our home, but we’re both in good health and are looking forward to “the good life” just doing what we want to do. I haven’t taken my Social Security yet because I’ve been working, but now that I’m retired from work we’ll need the extra money to do the things we want to do. How and when should I apply for benefits? Signed: Finally Retired Dear Finally: Oh my, yours is a classic example of why everyone should seek the advice of a qualified advisor before making Social Security decisions. And by qualified advisor I don’t mean a friend who thinks they know what you should do, or how you personally think the program works. I’m afraid that by not applying sooner you have forfeited a considerable amount of money because, even though you were still working full time, your Social Security benefit reached its maximum when you became 70 years of age, so you should have applied then. You should now immediately apply for your Social Security benefits and your wife should simultaneously apply for spousal benefits, which will be ½ of the benefit you were

entitled to when you became 66, plus any COLA increases and benefit increases due to any higher earnings you had since that time.

Although you were eligible to take your benefits without reduction at age 66, waiting past that earned you 8% per year in delayed retirement credits, up to the time you turned 70 when your benefit was 32 % higher than it was at 66.

In fact, once you reached your full retirement age of 66 you could have applied for benefits and continued to work, and would not have been subject to Social Security’s “earnings limit”. Since your benefit reached its maximum at age 70, there was no advantage to you by waiting past that to file.

When you apply now, you and your wife should both set your benefit start date as six months prior to the date you apply, because Social Security will pay up to six months retroactive benefits. Unfortunately the 2 ½ years of benefit you didn’t take since you turned 70 are lost, as are the 2 ½ years of spousal benefits that your wife was entitled to as soon as you reached 70 - tens of thousands of dollars depending upon your benefit amounts. This is an unfortunate reality of the system: the onus to apply for benefits is on you and your wife; Social Security doesn’t automatically

enroll you in the program at any time.

This is another example of how far too many people misunderstand how the Social Security program works and make decisions based upon incorrect assumptions. And the result is often many thousands of dollars in lost benefits.

Doctors Concert 2018 Benefits Steinway Society’s Music Programs for Local Children

As music programs have been cut from Coachella Valley schools, the Steinway Society has grown its programs to help fill the gaps from kindergarten through high school.”

The gala musical afternoon begins with a champagne reception at Toscana Country Club’s reception area at 11:30 a.m.; a gourmet luncheon on the terrace, and the concert of classical, jazz, and improvisational music.

Each year, over 30,000 local school children have the opportunity to experience the world of music thanks to Steinway Society of Riverside County (SSRC) which has created free interactive music education classes, live performances in schools, and local competitions for school-age children.

To provide these important programs, Steinway’s annual Doctors’ Concert Luncheon is a very special fundraising event. Each year some of the valley’s most notable physicians pick up their musical instruments to perform a different kind of operation.

This year, the Doctors’ Concert Luncheon will be Sunday, Feb. 11, 11:30 a.m. at Toscana Country Club, 76009 Via Club Villa, Indian Wells. Drs. Anthony Bassanelli, Scott Russell and Celeste Amaya will perform, as well as one of the young Festival Competition winners, Emma Erickson. In addition will be music by the Dr. Peter Curtis Jazz Trio, the Doc Reid Blues Trio, and a few special surprises.

Featured pianists performing classical and jazz favorites are Dr. Bassanelli, psychiatric physician at Eisenhower Medical Center; Dr. Russell, internist with Desert Oasis Healthcare; and Dr. Amaya, an internist at Eisenhower Medical Center.

This past year, Steinway’s eight music programs brought music into the lives children in all three Coachella Valley school districts.

“Everyone is sorely aware of the escalating cuts in funding for public education over the past few years,” said Ruth Moir, SSRC founder and Chairman of the board. “Most instrumental music classes and music education programs have been

The non-profit organization presents concerts and music labs in schools, and holds an annual Piano Festival Competition and Winners Concert for children aged 7 to 18. The festival is hosted this year by Rancho Mirage High School with recitals open to the public on March 4 & 11 followed by the Festival Winners Concert at Rancho Mirage Library on May 9.

Steinway Society’s outreach scholarship programs provides study awards for private piano lessons, music, and pianos for deserving children with a financial need. Volunteer and docent programs introduce children to classical music, notation, opera and jazz, and to the basics of an orchestra through interactive audio visual presentations.

In addition to children’s programs, Steinway Society has created Music is Wellness, a program in conjunction with Eisenhower Medical Center’s Memory Care Center, bringing live music for the enjoyment, enrichment and wellbeing of clients at the center.

Although authorized to use the Steinway name and logo, the nonprofit organization receives no funding from the Steinway Piano Company. A number of community and fundraising events raises money for Steinway Society scholarships and programs, and increases awareness of the need for music education in the classroom.

‘Tis the season for reunions DNA testing appears to have been a very popular activity this holiday season. A pair of 60 year olds in Hawaii, friends since they were in the sixth grade together, decided to take DNA tests. Alan Robinson who was adopted at an early age and Walter Macfarlane who never knew his father used a gene matching Web site to find clues as to their family histories. The friends turned out to be brothers separated at a very early age,

reports the Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC]. Meanwhile, 4,500 miles away in Georgia 20-year-old Kieron Christian Graham who was adopted when he was just three months old took a similar DNA test and found out that a fellow student at Kennesaw State University, 29-year-old Vincent Ghant, were long-lost brothers.

HUEY LEWIS AND THE NEWS AT CAREERBUILDER 2018

By Alison Elsner Organizers behind the 58th Annual CareerBuilder Challenge, set to take place January 17 – 21, 2018, have worked hard to get it right this year, after a somewhat turbulent recent history in successfully executing the event in a way that not only maintains its storied legacy but also attracts fans, players, celebrities and revenue.

The famed golf tournament is part of the PGA Tour’s early season “West Coast Swing” and is the only tournament on the circuit that features ProAm play along with tournament play for the first 54 holes. Big name draws this year include Phil Mickelson, Patrick Reed, Bubba Watson, John Rahm, John Daly and others. Each of the 156 PGA Tour pros plays with a different amateur partner each day for three days on three courses, including the Stadium Course and the Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course, both at PGA West and the La Quinta Country Club.

On Sunday, the low 70 professionals and ties play the final round of the 72hole tournament. The top three low net and top three low gross amateurs also play on Sunday to determine the overall CareerBuilder Challenge Amateur Champion.

The Tournament’s attempts to identify both an executive director who would advance the event and a celebrity ambassador with staying power have consistently ended up in the bunker, but this year the non-profit board of Desert Classic Charities, the managing force behind the event, have brought in Lagardère Sports of Scottsdale, Arizona, as consultant and Tournament producer, with Jeff Sanders as the newest Executive Director. A large portion of proceeds will once again be donated to local charities.

Founded 57 years ago in 1960 as the Palm Springs Desert Classic, the Tournament became known as the Bob Hope Classic (and later the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic). The event took on a new title, the Humana Challenge, in 2012 when it partnered with the Clinton Foundation. Humana left the tournament after the 2015 event. CareerBuilder joined the tournament in 2016 with a six-year sponsorship deal.

The Tournament has had a long history of celebrity players, with luminaries like Bing Crosby, Kirk Douglas, Desi Arnaz and several U.S. Presidents including Dwight Eisenhower, Gerald Ford and George H.W. Bush. However, in recent years even the celebrity and sponsor representation have faltered,

with comedian and actor George Lopez being let go in 2009, and Chrysler also pulling their name from the event title that year but continuing sponsorship support.

Two significant changes this year include the withdrawal of the Clinton Foundation as a partner after five years, which means that former President Bill Clinton will not continue as the unofficial host of the tour event.

Also, golfer Phil Mickelson, a World Golf Hall of Famer and a two-time winner of the CareerBuilder Challenge, will again serve as tournament ambassador, with an expanded role, while also competing in the event.

All this being said, there is solid optimism and a sense of renewed energy for this year’s event. If this year’s enhancements don’t do the trick, then it’s hard to believe that anything will.

Just about every possible base has been covered to create a comprehensive fan experience and a full scale sports and entertainment happening.

Here’s what to expect from this year’s extravaganza: 18th Green Von’s Fan Pavilion: An 8,000 square foot climate controlled hospitality pavilion featuring food and beverage for purchase from

H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation Concert Series: All Friday and Saturday daily admission ticket holders and weekly grounds badge holders will rock out to a concert on the Stadium Course driving range following completion of play on those nights. Performances include Huey Lewis and the News at 4:30pm on Friday, January 19 and Goo Goo Dolls at 4:30pm on Saturday, January 20.

Pricing is surprisingly reasonable.

Daily tickets start at $30 per day, providing access to all three hospitality venues. A full week badge is $75.

Food, beverage and parking ($10 per day) are sold separately. Tickets for members of the military and their families are free. However, patrons are encouraged to purchase passes soon.

Players and fans are ready for a professionally run Tournament, and, despite its challenges, so to speak, the Tournament is still regarded as one of the standout events around the country, delivering an action packed week, just the right dose of glitz and glam, exciting new hospitality venues and world class entertainment. Remember TV Dinners?

A show of hands, please: Do you remember when TV dinners first came out? Maybe you were a child then, or maybe you were the cook in the house. One way or the other, those frozen dinners took America by storm.

The first TV dinner came out in the 1950s – a Thanksgiving dinner with slices of turkey, sweet potatoes, dressing and peas. It took 25 minutes to heat in the oven. Families gathered around the television and ate on TV tray tables. While the cook in the family was happy about the convenience, all was not rosy.

Those early dinners cost 98 cents. Doesn’t sound like much until you calculate that in current dollars: Today that same frozen dinner would cost $8.98 or more.

There were no choices when it came to the vegetable. If you liked the meat selection and the mashed potatoes common in the dinners, maybe you didn’t like the peas/corn/carrots combo. A few years later the aluminum trays were changed to accommodate a small dessert ... as long as you liked hot peach slices.

And remember having to carefully cut the foil top to expose certain parts of the meal while keeping the rest sealed?

Nutrition content wasn’t required on the packaging, so there’s no telling how much sodium was in the meals.

The men of the family weren’t thrilled by the small amount of food -- and no seconds!

It was like eating airplane food, they said, and they were right, because that’s where TV dinners got their start.

The TV dinner and its successors had such an impact on our way of life that an original aluminum tray even made it to the Smithsonian.

But to this day, the image on the box still doesn’t look like the contents once you open it.

Bella and her bears

Little Bella Miller of Plainwell, MI told her family she wanted teddy bears for her sixth birthday- lots of them, reports the Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC].

She wanted enough of the stuffed animals to hand out to fire, police

and Emergency Medical Service personnel in her community. It seems they were running low on the cuddly bears they used to comfort kids in trouble. She received more than 300 of them.

“She gave all her presents to kids who don’t have anyone to hug when they’re feeling sad, so she gave up her birthday just for them,” her friend and classmate Autumn Gravelyn told reporters.

Coyote Stageworks presents “Dirty Blonde”

Popular three-character comedy tells the story of the legendary actress Mae West Coyote StageWorks, the Coachella Valley- based award-winning Actors’ Equity professional theater company will kick off its 2018 theatrical season with a production of “Dirty Blonde,” a popular three-character comedy about the legendary Mae West, starring Steve Gunderson, Bets Malone, and Larry Raben, and directed by James Gruessing. The Dunn Family History in 29 Palms

2nd Friday Old Schoolhouse Lecture Series

Join Jeff and Bob Dunn, as they recount the “Dunn Family History in 29 Palms.”

Harry and Doris Sherman discovered a dry place in the sun called 29 Palms in the mid 1930’s.

Family friends (Amo and Sherm Clark) had talked about the place and the Shermans came to visit from their home in Beverly Hills. They purchased property on the southwest side of town near the entrance to 49 Palms (now “Sherman Highlands”).

Harry built a small home (with his own hands) and dragged Doris and his four girls out on weekends to enjoy the desert solitude. Doris always felt better at “Roadrunner’s Roost.” Like so many WWI mustard gas victims, it eased her breathing and helped with her asthma. Once the girls had finished school, Harry

and Doris moved to the desert full time.

Daughter Judy went to college at Eugene, Oregon where she met a young man from the Pacific Northwest. Ralph Dunn and Judy fell in love and Ralph eventually chased her to 29 Palms to “meet the family.” Ralph, being a total rain hater, thought he had found heaven in the dry, parched sand in the Mojave Desert. Judy and Ralph were married under the cloud of WW II and came back to 29 Palms with two children under their arms.

Now it was time to figure out a way to make a living, raise a family, and help create a community in this small corner of the desert.

Sponsored by the Desert Institute at Joshua Tree National Park and the Twentynine Palms Historical Society, this lecture is held at the Old Schoolhouse Museum, 6760 National Park Drive, Twentynine Palms, on Friday, January 12 at 7 pm.

This lecture is open to the public and costs $5 per person at the door.

Optional dinner with speaker at 5 pm at the 29 Palms Inn, reservations are limited and attendees are responsible for their own meal.

Recipe of the Week Kitchen Diva

Add Dash to Your Diet With the New Year come new promises to eat better, lose weight, exercise and improve our health and wellbeing. The gluttony of the holidays combined with our good intentions for a new year have us redoing our grocery lists, our pantries and our diets. Some people are disciplined enough to eat modest amounts of whole foods. Others, however, appreciate more guidance, and that is when a structured meal plan can be of great value.

The DASH Diet (which stands for "Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension") was developed through research funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health as a way to lower blood pressure and reduce the use of medications. Studies dating back to its start in 1993 show that it's an effective way to lose weight and reduce the risk of many diseases.

My recipe for The Kitchen Diva's Detox Soup is a nutrition-packed bowlful of goodness that's based on a DASH diet recipe. This soup has a high amount of potassium, iron and calcium, and is wonderful for cleansing your digestive system and flushing out toxins to kick start a healthier new year. It contains plant-based proteins, antioxidants and healthy fats, and best of all, you can eat it several times throughout the day, if desired.

Kitchen Diva's Detox Soup Soaking the chia seeds in water makes them easier to digest, and their nutrients are better absorbed and assimilated in your body as they "sweep" through your intestinal system to eliminate the buildup of waste. ￭ 1/2 cup water ￭ 2 tablespoons chia seeds ￭ 2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil or coconut oil ￭ 1/2 medium onion, peeled and diced ￭ 2 tablespoons poultry seasoning ￭ 1 teaspoon cumin ￭ 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper ￭ 2 cloves of garlic, chopped ￭ 3 cups broccoli (fresh or frozen and thawed) ￭ 1/4 pound spinach leaves (fresh or frozen and thawed) ￭ 1 bell pepper, chopped ￭ 2 carrots, trimmed and chopped ￭ 2 ribs of celery, trimmed, chopped ￭ 1 handful fresh flat leaf parsley, roughly chopped ￭ 1 tablespoon lemon or lime juice or organic apple cider vinegar ￭ Spiced Roasted Chickpeas for

topping, optional, see recipe below Pour the water into a jar with a tight-fitting lid or a drinking glass.

Add the chia seeds and shake the jar or stir the seeds with a spoon around in the glass for about 5 minutes. Set the seeds aside to soak and proceed with the recipe.

Using a large pot, add the oil and heat over medium high heat. Add the onions, poultry seasoning, cumin and cayenne pepper to the stockpot and stir to combine. Cook the onions for 1 to 2 minutes, and add the garlic, broccoli, spinach, bell pepper, carrots and celery. Cook for 3 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Stir in the chia seeds and water, and turn the heat to high. Bring the soup to a boil and then turn the heat down to a simmer, stirring occasionally, for 8 to 12 minutes, until the vegetables are soft. Stir in the parsley and the lemon, lime or apple cider vinegar.

To puree the soup, remove the lid completely from the blender. Start the blender on low with nothing in it. Slowly add the soup, one ladleful at a time to the uncovered, running blender on the lowest setting, until the blender jar is half full and that batch of the soup is smooth.

Pour the pureed soup into a large bowl and repeat the pureeing steps until all of the soup is a smooth consistency. Pour the soup back into the pot to re-heat, if needed. Top with Spice Roasted Chickpeas, if desired.

Spice Roasted Chickpeas Chickpeas are high in protein and seasoning, and roasting them adds a

spicy, crunchy texture for this soup or as snack. ￭ ￭ ￭ ￭ ￭ ￭

2 (15-ounce) cans chickpeas 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 teaspoon Spanish smoked paprika 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1/4 teaspoon Kosher salt

Heat oven to 400 degrees F. Rinse and drain the chickpeas, and dry by rolling them around in a kitchen towel. Combine the paprika, cumin, cayenne and salt in a large bowl.

Add chickpeas and the oil; toss or stir to coat evenly.

Transfer chickpeas to a parchmentlined baking sheet and spread them out in a single layer. Bake 15 minutes, and then shake the tray so chickpeas will bake evenly.

Continue to bake chickpeas for another 10 to 12 minutes or until crunchy. Sprinkle some of the chickpeas on each bowl of soup. Allow any remaining chickpeas to cool on the pan and transfer them to a resealable plastic bag.

An act of kindness

A needy, 78-year-old widow in Richardson, TX gathered her husband's clothing and donated it to a local thrift shop run by Jewish Family Services but she apparently did not check the pockets of an old pea coat. But, a worker in the resale shop did and found four envelopes containing a total of $17,050 says the Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC].

The store tracked down the woman who donated the clothing and returned the money. She declined to be identified, but the widow said the cash would go a long way toward resolving financial problems she's been having since her husband's death.

Daisy: Yorkshire Terrier Yorkie, Young, Female Hello, everyone. Her name is Daisy. Call this little darling "The Comeback Kid." Up until her recent rescue, Daisy had a sad and difficult life. The photo from the pet rescue center website that resembles a dirty mop was how she looked when she entered the shelter and she is blind, matted and alone. She was afraid, and in severe pain due to the bulging pressure of the glaucoma that affected both of her eyes. But she found new life and hope for health when we rescued her. Both

eyes had to be removed, but having most likely always been blind, that didn't slow her down a bit. In fact, finally out of pain, she's happier and more energetic than ever.

She loves to play, go for walks, and even tries to chase the ball along with the other dogs. Technically, she's considered a special needs, and yes she's very special, but there's nothing needy about her. She's confident and can keep up with the best of them, racing around the yard and strutting her stuff. She's gotten a new lease on life, and now all she needs is a loving person and/family to call her own.
