irected by Charles RandolphWright, “Motown” is the true American dream story of Motown founder Berry Gordy’s journey from featherweight boxer to the heavyweight music mogul who launched the careers of Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, the Temptations, Marvin Gaye and so many others who have helped shape our culture. The hit Broadway musical features music and lyrics from the legendary Motown catalogue and is produced by Kevin McCollum, Doug Morris and Motown founder Berry Gordy. The stage show showcases classics that audiences love, such as “My Girl” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.” Motown tells the story behind the hits as Diana, Smokey,

Berry and the whole Motown family fight against the odds to create the soundtrack of change in America. “Motown” is the story of pioneers in music and in life who shattered barriers and brought people together. This story of songwriter, record executive, producer and visionary reminds ticket-holders that Berry Gordy is one of the most influential businesspersons in American music history. From his modest house in Detroit, he built Motown Records, which in the 1960s and ’70s grew to become the most successful independent record label in America, producing some of the greatest, most enduring popular music. The musical features staging by Schele William, choreography by Patricia Wilcox (“A Night with Janis

Joplin”) and Warren Adams (“Toy Story”), scenic design by David Korins (“Bring It On: The Musical,” “Annie”), costume design by Tony Award nominee Emilio Sosa (The Gershwins’ “Porgy and Bess,” “Project Runway”), sound design by Tony Award nominee Peter Hylenski (“Rock of Ages,” “The Scottsboro Boys”) and casting by Wojcik | Seay Casting. Motown history has it that not every song earned its company label immediately out of the studio. Artists were often sent back in to refine or re-record before passing muster. Just like the songs that made Gordy’s cut to be included in the Motown label, “Motown the Musical” is a top quality performance that proudly displays its exacting standards for fans and friends of the genre.

hope I get it…. “A Chorus Line” has become a classic musical theatre performance, capturing the most basic elements of powerful song and choreography. With original music by Marvin Hamlisch, lyrics by Edward Kleban and a book by James Kirkwood Jr. and Nicholas Dante, the musical’s story centers on 17 Broadway dancers auditioning for spots on a chorus line, set on the bare stage of a Broadway theatre during a musical audition. The sixth longest running Broadway show ever, it started on stage in 1975 and has had numerous reviv-

als and worldwide productions. Its realistic depiction of performers and their struggles to achieve fame and recognition on the Great White Way and beyond has earned the show unanimous praise as one of the true masterpieces of live theater. Palm Springs International Film Festival announces opening and closing night films

he 29th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival (PSIFF) announced that the festival’s opening night will be the screening of “The Post” directed by Steven Spielberg on Thursday, Jan. 4. The festival will close with “The Last Movie Star,” directed by Adam Rifkin on Sunday, Jan. 14. The Festival will screen 180 films from 77 countries, including 39 premieres (4 World, 12 North American and 23 U.S.) from January 2-15. The complete line-up including a focus on cinema from Argentina, Premieres, Talking Pictures, Books to Screen, Special Presentations, Awards Buzz, New Voices New Visions, Modern Masters, True Stories and more. PSIFF will open with “The Post” on Thursday, Jan. 4. Steven Spielberg directs Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks in “The Post,” a thrilling drama about the unlikely partnership of Katharine Graham (Streep), the first female

publisher of The Washington Post, and its driven editor Ben Bradlee (Hanks), as they race to catch up with The New York Times to expose a massive cover-up of government secrets that spanned three decades and four U.S. Presidents. Vino Ladies Talk Wine

he Vino Ladies had the pleasure of tasting three wines from Murrieta’s Well Estate Vineyard. Their wines are exclusively sourced from their estate vineyards in Livermore, California. Each are small lot offerings taking advantage of their best varietals and some made from descendants of some of their oldest vines. Murrieta’s Well is one of California’s original estates and has been growing grapes since the 1800s. It has evolved and changed with the times, introducing the Blends in 2010. We tasted the 2015 The Whip White Wine Blend, the 2016 Dry Rosé, and the 2014 The Spur Red Wine Blend. Jules I don’t say this often but “you had me at Rosé”! The 2016 Dry Rosé was delicious and was a perfect pairing for the holidays. I usually reserve my Rosé drinking for the summer, but found this dry offering to be a nice balance to the

sweet and savory treats I enjoyed during the holidays. The 2014 Spur Red Wine Blend was also great; a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Petite Verdot, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. This was a wine I could drink with or without food with notes of cranberry, blueberry and vanilla; very fruit forward. The final wine tasted (although not in this order) was the 2015 Whip White Wine Blend. It was tart yet full-bodied, with equal parts Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Chardonnay plus Viogniet and Muscat Canelli. All were good representatives of what this wine maker has to offer and can be enjoyed any time of the year.

Cher It isn’t often that I have had a chance to taste a white, a Rosé, and a red grown on the same estate vineyard, so it was a treat when the Vino Ladies sat down to sample three wines from Murrieta’s Well Estate Vineyard from Livermore, California. The first tasting was of The Whip, which is a white blend. The Whip had complex flavors that I found intriguing. Not overly fruity or sweet it had more of a floral finish that would be a perfect complement to a mild cheese. Next was the Dry Rosé, which had a perfect combination of sweet strawberries and tart cherries. The fruity combination would be a perfect choice

on a warm spring or summer day. Our final bottle was a red blend named The Spur. The Spur, with its berry and cherry flavors, was the most fullbodied of the three wines and would pair well with chocolate or red meats. All three are winners and Murrieta’s Well Estate Vineyard has great options no matter what type of wine you typically enjoy.

Suze Another wonderful night tasting wine with the Vino Ladies. I decided to highlight Murietta’s Well Dry Rosé 2016. This wine had a vibrant pink color with aromas of strawberry and ripe watermelon. Made from Grenache and Counoise grapes, it’s just the thing for an alfresco lunch or to enjoy with appetizers.

DeAnn It was a pleasure to get the opportunity to taste some estate blends from Murrieta’s Well recently. I really enjoyed “The Spur Red Wine Blend.” Wonderful blending that was simply delicious. I enjoyed the enticing aromas and flavors of black cherry and blueberry, with hints of chocolate, anise, spice, and toasted oak. Well worth the $35 SRP. I would enjoy this wine as I’m sitting outside on a brisk winter night.

Over 50 but feel like 30. I sometimes enjoy a boxed wine, over ice, by the pool on a hot summer night or a smooth, not too dry red, during the winter cold. I usually prefer a semi-sweet white wine but my tastes are evolving. I love to read or play on the beach with my puppy dog.

mokey Robinson is a renowned American R&B vocalist and producer with an eternally smooth and instantly recognizable high tenor voice that turned heads when he was the front man and founder of the Motown vocal group The Miracles. In 1960, The Miracles recorded Motown’s first million selling hit, “Shop Around.” Between 1960 and 1970, Robinson would produce 26 Top 40 hits with The Miracles, including several Top 10 hits such as “You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me,” “I Second That Emotion” and the group’s only number-one pop hit, “The Tears of a Clown.” Other notable hits include, “Ooo Baby Baby,”

and “The Tracks of My Tears.” Robinson was also one of the major songwriters and producers for Motown, penning several hit singles such as “The Way You Do The Things You Do,” “My Girl” and “Get Ready.” Robinson has been inducted into the Kennedy Center, awarded an individual star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and was given a second star with The Miracles. he Palm Canyon Theatre will say hello to 2018 with “Hello, Dolly!” While the musical favorite is getting rave reviews for its Broadway revival starring Bette Midler, Palm Springs residents and visitors can see their own version of Ms. Dolly Levi Gallagher, played by Se Layne. This will be Layne’s fourth time playing Dolly, which the Palm Canyon Theatre also produced in 2005. Dolly is a self-described “meddling matchmaker,” bent on not only “arranging” love for others, but is looking for a husband of her own in Mr. Horace Vandergelder, played by Donald Kelley. Dolly is also working to set-up Mr. Vandergelder’s store clerks – Cornelius Hackel and Barnaby Tucker, played by Ben Reece and Mat Tucker – with two city women – Irene Malloy and Minnie Fay, played by Johnelle Walker and Allegra Angelo. Derik Shopinski will direct and choreograph

the show, and as PCT’s resident costumer designer, he will also dress the production. Steven Smith is the show’s musical director, and he will lead a three-piece ensemble during the four-week run with memorable music and lyrics by Jerry Herman including “Before The Parade Passes By” and “Hello, Dolly.” The book is by Michael Stewart, based on Thornton Wilder’s 1938 farce “The Merchant of Yonkers.” “Hello, Dolly!” opens at the Palm Canyon Theatre on Friday, Jan. 19, and runs through Sunday, Feb. 11. Showtimes are 7 p.m. on Thursdays and 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Sunday matinees start at 2 p.m. Tickets are $32-$36. Tucked away in the Club Trinidad Hotel, The Purple Room reminds us of when Frank, Sammy, Dean and their pals cavorted on and off the stage in the swinging ‘60s. Guests who enter the inner sanctum beyond the host station find themselves in an intimate and elegant room with an active center bar, a back dining area with comfy booths and cozy tables and a showroom on the main floor facing the stage, where every seat feels like its VIP. For those wishing just to grab a cocktail, the bar willingly accommodates with specialty cocktails like Sammy Sangria and Maggie’s

Cat with Tito’s Vodka, basil and elderflower liquor. However, it should be mandatory to order dinner here, as the food is among the best in the desert, featuring items like Short Ribs Burgundy braised beef ribs with Gruyere whipped mashed potatoes, Seafood Tower with grilled lobster tail, shrimp, scallops and warm quinoa salad, Porcini Ravioli Prosciutto with truffle cream sauce and numerous others that are hard to resist. Wine pairings are suggested for each entrée. On Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, the joint is jumping with drinks, dinner, and dancing while guests listen to acclaimed jazz entertainers from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., such as Rose Mallet, The Michael Holmes Trio, Sharon Sills and Jazz Happy Hour with Mark Kahny and Trish

Hatley. The great news is that no advance tickets are required and there is no cover charge. Reservations are recommended. On Friday and Saturday nights, the Club features its trademark dinner and ticketed show, with nationally-known entertainers. Recent performers for mainstage shows include Bobbie Eakes and Joely Fisher. These special performances automatically include dinner reservations at 6 p.m. with shows starting at 8 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, delicious food and drinks are plentiful during happy hour from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday nights are a must, with happy hour drink prices offered all evening at the bar. Service is always top-notch, as is the entire experience at the Purple Room.

Known for its authentic and mouth-watering Italian cuisine, the favorite eatery on El Paseo is also popular for its all day happy hour in its Enoteca Wine Bar and patio. The bar offers full beverage and meal service, including tasty drink concoctions like the Grand Cosmo for $12.50, Razzitini for $9.90, PeachyTini for $12.50 and Godiva Dream for $11.50. House wines – featuring all varietals - are available for $5 per glass, and beers are available for $3.50 per bottle (domestic) and $4.50 (imported), including creative brews like Anderson Valley Boont Amber and the locally produced Hangar 24.

The real treat here for happy hour is the selection of tapas and tastes. Starters include Minestrone Soup ($4.50) and Pasta e Fagiolo ($5.90) as well as salads including Wedge ($7.90), Romana “Cesare” ($7.50), Mamma Gina chopped ($6.90), Frutti di Mare with shrimp, bay scallops and calamari ($9.90) and lots of others. Pastas include Risotto Asparagi ($9.50), Spaghetti e Polpetti – as in meatballs - $(9.50), Raviolo Funghi ($9.50) and several others. Tapas feature Salmone (a lovely filet of salmon with delicious sautéed spinach) for $9.50, Melanzane al Forno (baked eggplant parmigiani) for $9.50, Filetto (filet mignon with sautéed spinach) for $15.50 and more. On Monday through Saturday, the happy hour menu is served as

the lunch menu. The full dinner menu is offered in the restaurant’s dining room, with selections ranging from pastas and risottos to seafood to the finest meats, all served on white table linens with impeccable service. The Enoteca Wine Bar gets very crowded very quickly, so guests are encouraged to arrive in time to snag a seat especially if meeting friends. The party-vibe extends to the patio, reminiscent of an Italian bistro, which provides seating while overlooking the El Paseo street scene. “Rabbit Hole” Following its successful run of “The Legend of Georgia McBride,” Dezart Performs presents the Pulitzer Prize-winning play “Rabbit Hole,” January 12-21, at the Pearl McManus Theater in Palm Springs. e prepared to be up close and personal with beautiful redbeaked birds when you enter the “Winged Wonders” exhibit featured this season at the Living Desert. Housed in the same aviary that has featured butterflies and hummingbirds in previous years, this season’s exhibit features more than 60 free-flying lorikeets, members of the parrot family known for their bright colors and their unique brush-like tongues that lend themselves more to sucking nectar than eating seeds. Native to Australia, Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, lorikeets range in size from a small parakeet to a medium-sized parrot. The Living Desert offers visitors a chance to feed nectar to the birds. When the nectar cup appears, the

birds will form a line on your arm for a chance to sip some of the juice. They are also likely to land on your shoulder or your head, so be prepared. They don’t bite! The “Lorikeets: Winged Wonders” aviary features six sub-species of lorikeets and two sub-species of lories (which are ordinarily known to be similar, but slightly larger than lorikeets.) The most common residents are the green-naped and blue mountain (Sawinson) lorikeets, which stand out with their wide range of rainbow colors. Often referred to as honeyeaters or brush-tongue parrots, lorikeets are known for the tiny hair-like structures on their tongues that assist them in gathering up nectar from a flower. As the birds feed, pollen

brushes against the birds’ foreheads and throats and is spread to other flowers, enabling them to accomplish their ecological role as pollinators of those flowers. Their strong feet and flexible legs allow them to hang from the tiniest of branches in order to reach the desired flowers. (While you’re at the Living Desert, be sure to visit another species known for their tongues, the giraffes. There are two young ones this year.) The aviary will be open daily from 9 a.m.to 4 p.m. through April 30. Admission, in addition to park admission, is $3 for non-members and $2 for members. Nectar cups are available for $3.
