Trails, tips and snowfall at some of the region’s top resorts

A lot has been made of a return to neardrought conditions this winter after record-breaking precipitation in 2016-17, with burn bans recently in effect across Placer County. But a spotty December notwithstanding, ski season has only just begun, and the region’s top resorts are touting pristine slopes and trails aplenty. Whether by virtue of elevation or snow machines, Tahoe’s white-capped mountains are open for business.

Anticipating a snowy January, a few of the area’s most highly rated ski resorts shared their pitches and photos with the Granite Bay View.

aming itself the closest major ski resort to Sacramento and the Bay Area, Sierra-at-Tahoe opened Dec. 2 this season, about a week later than last year. Seventeen of its 46 trails were open at the end of the month, with a base depth of 13 inches and a total snowfall of 39 inches this season.

Resort spokeswoman Thea Hardy called it “early season conditions,” acknowledging it had been a dry month, which exposed a few unmarked obstacles to watch for on the mountain. As of late December, 18 of the resort’s 46 trails were open and bracing for a big month ahead, as Sierra-at-Tahoe got 22 feet of snow last January.

sure, but we are open and proud of our product,” Hardy said.

She promoted Sierra-at-Tahoe as “the authentic locals’ resort,” being focused on the actual experience on the slopes rather than ancillary novelties and attractions.

“While a lot of other resorts are signing under the village style, and that ho-

mogenous sort of style, we are authentic and embody the original soul of skiing and snowboarding, where people come up and park in the parking lot and walk straight to the lift,” Hardy says. “They’re not inundated with all the sales messages and Starbucks high-end retail shops.

We’re here to ski and have fun, and that’s what it’s all about for Sierra.”

orthstar California opened Dec. 1 this season, which spokeswoman Stephanie Myers said is typical, and like most Tahoe resorts its season lasts as long as the snow and customers hold out, which they tend to do until mid-April. As of late December, she said, the slopes were just three inches shy of the snow depth at that time last year, with a base depth of 18 inches and a total of 30 inches of snowfall this season.

Also boasting fine cuisine, boutique shops, a wide array of lessons and winter-sport programs for all ages, Northstar is geared toward the “premiere family experience,” according to Myers. Roughly

60 percent of the resort’s terrain is beginner- or intermediate-level, and tree-skiing is also a main draw.

“It’s all about making memories and having the time and space to do that,” Myers said. “Our village is set up to add kind of a central point, so that families

can meet up, spend time together in the cabana, make s’mores … it’s all about ‘the moment.’ Skiing is great, but it’s that next level up — what else is there to do to make memories with your family, and that’s what we’re all about.”

win resorts with a 15-minute shuttle ride in between, Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows have recorded 69 inches of snowfall since they opened Nov. 17, with a base depth of 33 inches.

Squaw Valley has been a staple of Tahoe’s ski culture since it hosted the 1960 Winter Olympics, with a highly variable ski and snowboard season that’s one of the longest in the country. Spokeswoman Liesl Hepburn said the resort was open until July 15 last year.

She said the resort had an above-average snowfall in November, which allowed them to open with a larger-than-usual offering. A two-week dry spell in the

beginning of December forced them to open several terrain areas with machine-made snow, but exceptionally cold temperatures allowed it to build up instead of melting.

“A lot of those early storms were pretty warm, but we’re nearly 3,000 vertical feet, so we definitely benefit from snow up top,” Hepburn said. “It’s been inter-

esting, hearing people bring up (December’s dry spell), because I think a few of these storms have skirted the foothills … so we’re maybe one storm behind where we were this time last year.”

By the end of December, the twin resorts had opened 75 of their 270 trails — 43 at Squaw Valley and 32 at Alpine Meadows.

panning four peaks and 1,650 skiable acres along Donner Pass, Sugar Bowl Ski Resort opened on Dec. 6 this season. Spokesman Jon Slaughter said as of Dec. 28, the resort had opened two of its four peaks, nine of its 12 lifts, and 21 of 98 trails. He was unaware of the most recent drought statistics or the long-range forecast, but he recalled nearly 800 inches of snow last season, 300 of which landed in January.

“All we’re really looking at is the shortterm forecast, and we are seeing a potential for a break in the pattern around Jan. 5, so we are optimistically anticipating we’ll have a breakdown in the high pressure,” Slaughter said. “It’s still very early in the season.”

He added that Sugar Bowl invested $3 million in renovations over the summer, relocating the base of their kids’ village and building a dedicated beginner area with a moving carpet. The resort also revamped its Nob Hill Café and came up with Bay Area-inspired menus.

All things considered, Slaughter said, the season is young but there’s a lot on offer for the snow crowd.

“It’s been a lower-snow year, but the conditions on the runs that we have are actually really good, especially up high where we got snowfall early on,” he said.

“We’re just trying to encourage people to come up. The sun’s shining, there’s plenty of lifts open, there’s plenty of runs available, and it’s actually a really good time, especially if you just want to get out there and make some turns.”

This winter, Placer County and a team of contractors will head out into the county’s forests to remove trees that have died as a result of drought and beetle infestation.

ccording to the United States Forest Service, one winter of record-breaking rains was not enough to undo five years of severe drought for 27 million California trees.

As part of that number, trees have died across 94,000 acres of Placer County since November 2016, according to county emergency services manager John McEldowney. Placer County is one of 10 California counties facing dramatic tree mortality following the recent drought.

The Forest Service’s data, released last month, brought the total number of dead trees to 129 million across the state since counts began in 2012.

The dead trees present risks to public utilities like roadways, water treatment plants and other structures that could be devastated by wildfire, falling trees or erosion as a result of vegetation removal.

Fires also negatively affect air and water quality. Risk to recreational areas is perhaps less urgent than infrastructure and

public health, but still an economic hazard of wildfire.

“People like to come up and recreate in forests,” McEldowney said. “They don’t like to recreate on moonscapes.”

The trees themselves are susceptible to bark beetles, which occur naturally but are deterred by the sap a tree produces.

When a tree is drought-stressed or nutrient-deprived in a crowded forest, it can’t produce enough sap to keep the beetles at bay. The insects kill the tree, rendering it little more than a piece of kindling.

To handle the growing problem and the risks it poses, the state has organized a Tree Mortality Task Force, comprised of private utility companies and local, state and federal agencies.

Placer County has its own separate task force, of which McEldowney and Cal Fire members Mary Eldridge and Steve Garcia are members.

McEldowney said the county is working on introducing legislation to protect

homeowners from losing their insurance after a fire — something he said has been a problem in recent years for Placer residents. The Wildfire Safety and Recovery Act will head to legislators in January.

The law, should it pass, would also require insurance companies to offer discounts for customers who make fire-safe changes to their homes and would prevent companies from redlining areas that may experience a fire.

From Cal Fire’s perspective, Garcia said they have been turning their focus to pile-burning and cutting fuel breaks in areas with dead or dying trees. Pile-burning, as opposed to prescribed burning, allows a more concentrated elimination of debris once trees are felled. After areas are cleared with this process, they can be safely maintained with prescribed burning, Garcia said.

In coming months, McEldowney said, the county will jump into removing its dead trees around sensitive infrastructure like roads, cell towers and watershed areas. The county’s task force has hired an arborist consultant, Folsom-based Mountain G Enterprises, to assess the situation and help with removal. Cal Fire is contributing about $55,000 to the effort, according to Garcia.

“We’ll be starting in earnest later this winter or early spring,” McEldowney said.

However, like most efforts relating to tree mortality, the county’s tree removal presents challenges. Eldridge said a special obstacle Placer County faces is finding space to hold the trees as they leave the forest.

“If we take down the trees to mulch and take to a biomass plant, where do we put them?” she said. “We have homeowners, property owners take out dead trees to reduce fire risk ... and put them where?”

But despite the financial and logistical challenges, McEldowney and Garcia

both expressed a bit of hope in handling the situation.

Garcia said last year’s wet winter seemed to slow the effects of infestation statewide. Data from the Forest Service reflects his assertion: 62 million trees died in California in 2016. That number dropped by 57 percent in 2017, though Garcia noted that this winter has been much drier.

McEldowney anticipates large fires blazing through the county in coming decades, but said after the tree thinning around infrastructure, they will likely be in remote areas with less risk to life and property.

The beetle infestation is still an urgent matter for state and county officials alike, but it’s not as shocking as it was in recent years, Garcia said.

A primer on local bird watching hen traveling, many people bring back souvenirs and knicknacks. For Granite Bay birdwatcher Ron Pozzi and California State Parks scientist Dan Kopp, checklists are enough.

In fact, the avian enthusiasts keep lists wherever they go: Nicaragua, a Hawaiian wildlife refuge, a marsh along Lake Erie, the Houston International Airport, the gas station down the street.

“You’re never not birding,” Kopp says, trekking a path down to Folsom Lake with Pozzi, a couple hours before sunset.

“Though it’s kind of a curse ... I could have my head halfway underwater and tell you what that is,” he says.

It’s evident Kopp and Pozzi are committed to this near-constant avian cataloguing. Each sports a pair of binoculars far beyond a hundred-dollar Amazon mod-

el. Pozzi’s scope alone costs three grand, and he once begged an employee at the Lincoln Wastewater Treatment Plant to let him get a glimpse at a rare bird someone sighted there.

A science teacher at Cavitt Junior High School, Pozzi finds time to bird three or four times a week, heading to the lake before or after school, drawn by the possibility of what he could find and the tranquility of the search.

“I’ve taught junior high for the last 36 years. This is my therapy,” Pozzi jokes.

But in all seriousness, the gear, the lists, the nomenclature and the certainty of seasoned birders should not put off those wishing to give bird watching a try, they say.

Kopp hints at what sounds like a proverb: “If you never get out there, you’ll never see the birds.”

HITTING THE TRAIL

So how can novice birders get started?

According to Kopp and Pozzi, binoculars and a good field guide are the only pieces of gear necessary.

Pozzi recommends Sibley or Peterson field guides, outlining the pros and cons of hardcopy and digital versions.

Hardcopy guides tend to provide more detail, especially when it comes to field markings on birds, which may distinguish similar-looking species from one another.

But digital guides can be downloaded to a phone or tablet, making them easier to carry. Digital guides also often provide audio recordings to help birders identify species by ear — a trademark skill of experienced birders like Kopp and Pozzi.

“It’s like when you’re on the phone and you can tell the difference between your sister’s voice and your mom’s voice,” Kopp says. “It’s just repetition.”

Besides binoculars and a guide, Kopp recommends tagging along on field trips with other more experienced birders, such as those in Sacramento’s Audubon Society. Trips are free and frequent and

the other members can provide insider knowledge, which is sometimes crucial in distinguishing similar species.

Species identification starts with what some birders believe is a holdover from World War II aircraft identification: GISS, or general impression of size and shape.

Birders can try to identify a sighting by considering its silhouette, body proportions, behavior and plumage.

Habitat is also a good indicator, Pozzi says. If food sources or shelter specific to a certain type of bird are nearby, that can help weed out other species.

Time of year is important to consider, too. For instance, on Folsom Lake, waterfowl are common in winter but not in summer. A bird spotted in July might be a raptor, a songbird or something else, but is likely not a duck.

“Once you get into it, you know what will be there based on your location and the season. You can eliminate hundreds of species right there,” Pozzi says.

CLOSE TO HOME

Pozzi has been at this so long he’s developed an ingrained knowledge of who will be where and when. This time of year, he’s down at the lake, staked out at the boat launch or Doton’s Point, another favorite spot. In spring, he heads into the foothills and in summer, after the snow melts, he birds in Tahoe.

He’s spotted 165 different species in the Folsom Lake State Recreation Area, proving that birders at any level don’t need a boarding pass to get a full list.

According to eBird, a database shared between the Audubon Society and world-renowned Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Placer County contains at least 313 species of bird. Data-loggers have spotted 176 species at Beal’s Point and 112 at the Granite Bay boat launch, proving Granite Bay residents don’t need a boarding pass to access good birding. Birding is a lot like gold panning in that once in awhile, you find the nugget,” Ron Pozzi says.

Pozzi is a Granite Bay resident, middle school science teacher and avid birdwatcher.

COMMON LOON

The common loon (Gavia immer) is recognizable by its loud call, which sounds like a trilling, mournful laugh.

Common loons tend to spend winters along coastal regions, but breed mostly in Canada and Alaska.

Pozzi attributes this diversity to the numerous habitats in the area. Standing next to his scope, he points them out: chaparral, oak woodlands, shoreline marshes, the reservoir itself, which creates new habitats for different species as it rises and falls.

“The whole lake, on either side, is a wonderful opportunity to encounter birds,” Kopp says. “You can close your eyes and find 30 species.”

A DUAL PURPOSE

Though eBird helps people like Pozzi who do this for fun, it also helps environmental scientists like Kopp and other biologists, who use data provided by citizen scientists.

Databases help log populations, so if a species shows up in a place it’s not supposed to be, scientists have a record and can try to figure out why. Kopp recalls one instance where he logged a snowy plover and was later contacted by a scientist wondering if it had leg bands, indicative of one he was studying. The citizen-led databases also help scientists track populations in developing areas such as Granite Bay itself.

Though birds fly across the globe to their various habitats — some of Folsom Lake’s migrating species come from Central America, Pozzi says — bird watching unites those near and far, whether through data or passion.

“It puts you in a different mood and it’s challenging to ID things, whatever level you’re on,” Pozzi says, adjusting his scope on a western grebe. “It’s just like opening a present — what am I going to get today?”

Disney’s theme parks in Anaheim are ever-changing destinations that draw people from around the world. They’re also less than a day’s drive from Granite Bay and, depending on how long it’s been since your last trip, might be worth revisiting with little ones who haven’t seen its latest attractions. If 2017 was a year of big changes for many, as a Disney aficionado I can tell you that California Adventure and Disneyland were no exceptions.

The Elliot dragon float from the 1977 Disney film “Pete’s Dragon” travels down the parade route at Disneyland for the brief return of the Main Street Electrical Parade in 2017. The massive float decorated in thousands of green lights weighs 5,600 pounds, and measures 16 feet tall, 10 feet wide and 38 feet long.

Disneyland Construction has been underway since 2016 on a 14-acre “Star Wars” land, set to open in 2019 at the north end of the park.

With the promise of its own land, the recent “Star Wars” changes in Tomorrowland are starting to look redundant. The 2015 “Star Wars” overlay on Space Mountain, called Hyperspace Mountain, was removed in 2017 and the attraction was returned to its original glory. Plans for the Star Tours ride have yet to be announced, but speculation revolves around the possibility of the attraction being rebooted CONTINUED ON PAGE 18

One of the biggest changes to the parks last year was the opening of the new Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout! attraction.

The ride took the place of The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, and most of the attraction remains pretty much the same.

It’s still a drop-style ride, and the line flows through the building the same way, only now you’re in The Collector’s Fortress, where he has treasures on display from around the universe — including the Guardians of the Galaxy themselves.

During the ride, guests assist Rocket in his effort to break the Guardians out of The Collector’s Fortress. Even with similar infrastructure, this Marvel-inspired reboot was well-done and the ride is still surprising and exciting.

Another change to Disney California Adventure this year was the addition of a FastPass option for the Toy Story Midway Mania ride. Since the attraction has often claimed wait times of an hour or more, a FastPass option is definitely a welcome change.

The Mark Twain Riverboat, a recreation of the 19th-century steam-powered paddlewheel riverboats that carried people and cargo up and down the Mississippi River, recently reopened this year after its closure due to nearby construction.

with a different theme that’s hopefully a better fit for the Tomorrowland motif.

Because the site of the new “Star Wars” land is behind the Rivers of America, park-goers missed out on surrounding attractions like Pirate’s Lair on Tom Sawyer’s Island, Disneyland Railroad, Mark Twain Riverboat, Sailing Ship Columbia and Davy Crockett Explorer Canoes for more than a year. The long-running nighttime show Fantasmic! was also put on hold during construction, but in summer of 2017 the area reopened and the show resumed — with a couple improvements.

Now guests can catch a decent view of Fantasmic! from nearly every viewpoint around the Rivers of America, with new mist screens and brighter projections.

And with several newly added scenes, even longtime Disney fans should find something novel in it.

The 2017 changes in Disneyland don’t stop with all the “Star Wars” commotion.

Edelweiss Snacks in Fantasyland is now the Red Rose Taverne, as a nod to the blockbuster “Beauty and the Beast” reboot; the Electrical Parade made a brief run down Main Street for nostalgia’s sake; and the Matterhorn Bobsled ride finally added a FastPass option.

Disney MaxPass In July 2017, Disney introduced the Disney MaxPass, which could completely change a guest’s experience.

For $10 per ticket, per day, users have the ability to reserve FastPasses for participating rides in Disneyland and Disney California Adventure from the Disneyland smartphone app.

At the entrance to the FastPass line for each ride, you’ll find scanners that accept your physical ticket barcode, your ticket barcode on the app, or the FastPass barcode on the app. I found the process seamless and simple, completely changing the Disney experience.

In addition to the FastPass access, you also get unlimited Photopass downloads for the day. This includes attraction photos and “magic shots,” along with some character dining experiences. The old habit of snapping a cell phone picture of the photo display screens is a thing of the past: just enter the photo code into the app and download the high-quality photo straight to your phone.

On Aug. 21, construction teams installed the highest steel beam for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, a new Star Wars-themed land coming to Disneyland in 2019. What’s next A lot has changed in Disneyland and Disney California Adventure in the past year, but there’s more to come. In 2018, while anticipation builds for the “Star Wars” land unveiling, Pixar will leave its mark on both parks as Disneyland adds a Pixar-themed fireworks show and DCA gives a Pixar influence to its Paradise Pier.

Also in the works is an increased Marvel presence in DCA, a new parking structure and access point, an expansive refresh of the Grand Californian Hotel and Spa in Downtown Disney, and some new nearby hotels.

t the moment, the sprawling red house at the intersection of Eureka Road and Auburn Folsom Road looks like a secluded fortress, replete with walls and vegetation. A planned update could transform this property into something completely different.

The December meeting for the Granite Bay Municipal Advisory Council included a presentation about early plans to turn a 3,000-square-foot house at 6957 Eureka Rd. into Hacienda Carmelitas Community Center, which would cater to weddings, corporate events and more.

Ziyad Mansour, an engineer for the project, said that the land will need to be re-zoned from residential to commercial and that the center’s opening could be a little ways off.

“We’re thinking probably end of 2019 is a good target,” Mansour said.

The house has been owned since 2007

by Clemente Heredia, owner of a string of Carmelitas Mexican restaurants in the region. The events center would be in a similar vein to the restaurants, but diverge in certain respects.

For one thing, the center wouldn’t just be a for-profit space available to the highest bidder, Mansour said.

“We’re thinking about maybe doing something for the community as far as, like, free of charge if they need the facility for just meetings and things of that nature for a short period of time, provided that (it doesn’t) have an event that night,” said Mansour, who noted that possible free events at the center could include Granite Bay MAC meetings.

Mansour said that aside from appearing at the MAC meeting, his team has had a pre-development meeting with Placer County officials.

continued from page 24 In a Nov. 14 letter to Shirlee Herrington of the county’s Community Development Resources Agency, he highlighted plans which include: converting the existing house into a kitchen; adding a 5,600-square-foot structure “to accommodate a grand hall, bar, storage, and office”; and building an 87-space parking lot at the west side of the parcel.

Mansour said some people at the MAC meeting expressed concerns about traffic, already an issue on Auburn Folsom Road.

“The traffic is bad at it is,” Mansour said. “But I think being an events center, I think the traffic is going to be very heavy for a short period of time.”

Overall, he’s optimistic, citing the natural appeal of the grounds and that the natural habitat won’t need to be upset to build the center.

In a broader sense, the intersection where the event center is going highlights the changes coming to Granite Bay. Across from the planned events center sits a vacant lot that could become Eureka at Granite Bay, a 28-home development

When 70-year-old Tom Blakemore moved into the neighborhood 39 years ago, he just wanted a relatively rural place to raise his young family.

Timber-frame house unique among neighbors

n Folsom’s up-and-coming Lakeview Oaks community, one home stands out among the rest, even in mid-construction.

Visually, resident Kirk Larson’s “Viking house,” as he calls it, was recently a Douglas-fir skeleton glowing orange against a drab November landscape, visible from across the neighborhood.

But once Larson and his wife Teresa Garcia move in this spring from Elk Grove, the home will remain a unique presence in the sea of conventional homes, built with an old-fashioned method brought over from Europe: timber framing.

PAST TO PRESENT

“They were built this way a thousand years ago,” Larson said, walking around the plywood floors of what will be his living room.

Pointing out what will go where, he beckoned the imagination to fill in the floor plans: a metal spiral staircase here, two 30-inch range stoves in that corner, stacking glass doors that will open up the back of the home, blurring the line between inside and out. All but two bedrooms will be open space inside the 2,500-square-foot building, much like homes used to be, he said.

“It’s a really peaceful setting,” Garcia said. “I’m looking forward to how open it’s going to be.”

A PARTICULAR PROCESS

Larson, 53, drew the inspiration from his Swedish-American ancestry — his paternal grandparents arrived in the United States from Sweden in the late 1800s — and his family’s certified centennial farm in northwestern Illinois. He grew up in Detroit but spent his summers playing in the family’s timber-frame barns, a staple of rural landscapes in the Midwest.

Over the last seven years, Larson used these fond memories to help create the house, planning with Garcia along the way. The pair had originally intended to build the structure on the 640-acre farm back in Illinois. But Garcia, a marketing

Rather than being made in a factory, each beam, joint and notch is crafted by hand. The structure depends entirely on timber, using thumb-size pins of locust — a type of timber known for its hardness — in place of metal nails.

The frame goes up like a puzzle, Larson explains. The pieces are assigned a number, assembled at the shop, tested for soundness, disassembled, loaded up and transported to the building site which, in this case, happens to be 1,900 miles away.

Larson and Garcia chose to work with timber framers like Justin Bush out of Knoxville, Illinois, just down the road from the family farm.

Bush said he’s worked with Larson for six years. He’s traveled to Montana to put up a house, but the Folsom structure is the farthest job he’s done. This type of construction is sought after in niche markets the U.S., in regions like the Northeast, the Appalachians and Pacific Northwest, Bush said.

Compared to typical, stick-built houses, Bush said this is a much more complicated process that places the home’s skeleton in plain view.

“All the structural elements are exposed,” he said. “The architecture shows CONTINUED ON PAGE 30

The nature of timber framing has created some challenges throughout the project, Larson said. In order to get the building to fit in its plot, they had to shorten it by 10 feet fewer than standard length.

They’ve also had to drop details found on traditional Viking homes — think diamond-shaped windows and exterior motifs of dragons or boars — per homeowner’s association requirements.

“We met a lot of resistance,” Larson said. “People thought we were crazy ...

One wouldn’t even bid.”

However, a few neighbors knew what a timber-frame house looks like, including a retired arborist down the street. And despite the higher cost, logistics and residential hurdles, Larson said it’s all worth it: the view, the wildlife, the excitement of watching walls rise, piece by piece, into the manifestation of a dream.

“You grow up and raise kids and stuff gets cramped down,” Larson said, “But when the kids are grown, you look around and say, ‘Hey, I can still do that’ ... It’s surreal.”

Close-knit country living in Greystone Place

According to resident Tami Files, Greystone Place has a very flexible homeowner’s association, which is evident in the variety of homes and landscapes.

I

n some respects, the Greystone Place neighborhood is similar to other Granite Bay locales. Its residents live in large houses with well-kept yards behind a gate. They drive not-inexpensive vehicles. They see the shift taking place elsewhere: older residents moving out while younger families take their place.

But Greystone is not Granite Bay’s typical sprawling bit of suburbia. Counting 14 houses, it’s one of the smallest residential areas in town. Instead of a maze of winding roads, the community has just two streets, each culminating in a cul-de-sac.

“This feels like a neighborhood instead of a development,” says resident Diane Plumlee, seated on neighbor Tami Files’ couch. “We say it’s one of Granite Bay’s best-kept secrets. Everybody knows someone living in Los Lagos or Wexford.”

But inside Greystone’s gates, everyone knows everyone. According to Plumlee, half the neighborhood’s 14 families have lived there for over a decade. As of mid-December, two houses were on the market — an extremely rare situation, Plumlee said.

friendly and residents know things about each other they don’t want to know. But it’s small enough that there’s no room for drama, Plumlee says.

Rather, Greystone operates on unwritten principles of accountability, openness and keeping the peace. Kids play in the street and resident Rebecca Quinn, also over at Files’ house, says she has literally run across the road to get an egg from a neighbor.

Of the three women on the couch, Quinn is the newest to Greystone. In 2005, she moved here somewhat reluctantly from New Jersey, where she was

happy with the schools and the house she’d just finished fixing up.

But it didn’t take Quinn long to warm up to Greystone. She squealed when her husband showed her the house and says every family in the neighborhood stopped by to say hello when they moved in. She now knows the story behind every home in the community and the camaraderie has continued, as evidenced by the three women on the couch.

“That’s what’s special about this neighborhood,” Quinn says. “When my oldest son went off to college, Diane and Tami checked on me. It’s not superficial.

Sometimes you have surface relationships with people around you, but it’s deeper than that.”

Neighbors also came together was a few years ago when a friend, Lynn, passed away. Feeling the need to take in the loss together, Files, Quinn, Plumlee and others went house-to-house, checking in on each other.

“We walked outside and somehow ... ended up on Rhonda’s porch,” Plumlee says, looking at Files and Quinn, recalling the memory together.

On a happier note, neighbors celebrate birthdays and holidays together. Gatherings of all 14 families are less common now than they were when residents still had young kids at home, but women of the neighborhood will schedule lunches or dinners when they feel too much time has passed between events.

In their free time — away from occupations in law, education and business — many residents spend their time outside.

Proximity to the Granite Bay Golf Club means many residents are members. A quick walk to Folsom Lake makes it easy to bike, hike, swim and boat. When human friends can’t accompany them on excursions, many residents have dogs who will.

Quinn said she especially likes being able to leave in the morning to ski at Tahoe, then come back down and go to the beach that same afternoon.

And at the end of the day, after activity and celebration and short-term reunions with the friends next door? Residents can return to quiet backyard retreats to take in the natural surroundings. Files says coyotes will meander into the area and that some nights are so tranquil she can hear the wingbeats of Canada geese passing overhead.

“It feels like the country,” Files says.

“It’s peaceful, quiet country living.”

iving in Amador County, I have become a big fan of Amador County wines — especially barbera, a varietal that is not widely grown in Australia.

Most visitors to the Shenandoah Valley focus on the wineries on Shenandoah Road and Shenandoah School Road. The road less travelled is Steiner Road, which loops off Shenandoah Road.

There are nine wineries well worth a visit providing excellent wines and great experiences.

Dillian Winery: Owner Tom Dillian has been growing highquality grapes in Amador County since 1972. The winery tasting room is modeled after a home built by Tom’s grandfather in the early 1900s and sits on property owned by the Dillians since 1917. To quote Mike Dunne, wine writer for the Sacramento Bee, on his visit to the Barbera Festival: “The overall standout of the day to this palate was the Dillian Wines 2015 Amador County Barbera.” Just off Steiner Road is also the Bella Grace property, well worth a visit for their exceptional wines, the view and a tour of their wine cave.

Renwood Winery: A beautiful facility offering not just great wines but an ideal setting to enjoy gourmet selections from their deli.

Deaver Vineyards: Where grape growing has been a family tradition for over 150 years. Besides offering many different varietals, they have a large selection of ports to choose from.

Wait! Don’t just skim down to see which exercise I’ve labeled as the best. Get the whole story.

I’m often asked to pin down a single exercise as the one that will help lose the most fat and tone the quickest. That’s not an easy question to answer.

The fact is, an exercise may be perfect for Cindy but it may not be the best choice for Bob — hence my hesitation to label any exercise as universally the best.

That being said, some exercises are definitely better than others. And yes, there are even a few that I would call the best.

What makes an exercise the best?

When you decide which exercises to include in your routine, it is important to consider the type of movement involved. The simpler the movement, the fewer calories you’ll burn and the fewer muscles you will strengthen. On the other hand, the more complex the movement, the more calories you will burn and the more muscles you will strengthen.

To put it simply, exercises that use complex movements will deliver better results than exercises that use only simple movements. Complex movements recruit multiple muscles, some to stabilize and others to perform the movement. This process keeps your heart rate higher than a simple exercise would, giving you a more intense workout.

WHAT IS A COMPLEX MOVEMENT? A complex movement is a multi-joint movement that recruits large portions of the body to complete the exercise. Let’s compare a simple movement leg exercise with a complex movement leg exercise: The leg extension machine uses a simple, isolated movement to work the quadriceps. You’re in a seated position moving only your knee joint. There isn’t much involvement, if any, from other muscles and it doesn’t burn very many calories.

Now let’s look at a free weight walking lunge. You start by standing with your feet together and a dumbbell in each hand at your sides (or a barbell across your shoulders, or a medicine ball held at your chest, or even with no weight at all). You take a large step forward and lower your back knee, keeping your front knee at a 90-degree angle. Now you push off your front foot and pull your back leg forward, repeating the movement.

How many muscles did you utilize while performing the lunge? Probably too many to count.

You certainly worked your quadriceps, gluteus, hamstrings, calves, abdominals, supporting muscles in your shoulders, arms and back — just to name a few. You also raised your heart rate

and really kicked your metabolism into high gear. That’s what I call a great exercise.

OTHER WAYS TO INCREASE INTENSITY Using complex movements is just one of many ways to kick your workout intensity up a notch. Try incorporating a super set into your routine. To do so, simply perform two or more exercises in a row and then take a short rest.

Or how about a compound set? Perform one exercise, rest, then perform an exercise with opposing body parts. To find exercises that complement one another, choose ones that have similar but opposite motions such as a chest press and a row.

The key to finding the best exercise is to find the ones that bring your workout intensity to a whole new level.

I’d be shortchanging you if I named any exercise as the best.

The fact of the matter is that it is a combination of changing your workouts up, using interval training, and even some good old cardio that will ultimately see you to your goal.

These methods will help you to burn more calories, increase your metabolic rate, and will stimulate the production of more fat burning and muscle toning hormones. Of course, there is more involved to achieving your fitness goals.

You need to incorporate fat burning into your routine.

You need to consistently challenge yourself during workouts.

You need to take control of your eating habits and get your diet dialed in.

YOU’RE IN CHARGE While there are many things in life that we do not have direct control over, what ends up in our mouth is not one of them!

We control what we eat. Instead of eating extra-large portions, choose wisely and your body and waistline will thank you for it.

Couple this with a regular fitness routine and you will find that reaching and maintaining your goal weight is easier than ever.
