owler Nurseries in Newcastle is celebrating 105 years in business and a fourth-generation member of the family attributes the success of the business to great employees.

A great product probably helps as well.

Denise Moore, daughter of Nancy Fowler Johnson, said the company’s longevity and success is due to the staff, some of whom have worked there for decades.

“We have a long line of people who have worked here for many years,” Moore said.

“Their attention to detail, care and dedication are some of the reasons for our longevity.”

“Also, we’re located in the foothills with incredible soil for root growing and drainage,” Moore added. “We have a really good micro-climate and soil. We’re very fortunate; this area was the fruit basket for the United States for a very long time.”

Moore’s great-grandfather, Gene Fowler, who founded the nursery, managed fruit sheds in Loomis until a local judge asked him to produce 20,000 pear trees in 1912.

Since then, Fowler Nurseries has branched out into many other varieties.

“Almonds make up 70 percent of our business,” Moore said. “That’s our biggest demand and has been for the last 15 years. Pears and cherries are our next two biggest crops. Then it’s peaches, nectarines, apricots, plums and prunes and European and Asian pears.”

“We’ve also worked with several breeding programs around the world,” Moore added. “We try to solve the growers’ problems.”

In the 1950s and 1960s, her grandfather and great-grandfather researched the pear decline at the time and found a root stock that reduced the level of pear decline.

“The pear decline was one of the reasons for a reduction of pears in the area, as well as other types of trees at the time,” Moore said. “My grandfather and great-grandfather also worked with the University of California at Davis.”

One of the nursery’s “grand slams” has been a root stock from Russia called KRYMSK-86.

“We found about it because we planted it in Chico, and during the windstorm of 2007, it remained upright while other trees were bent at a 45-degree angle,” Moore said. “It has a great amount of root strength.”

“We also have a gentleman we work with from Oregon who travels around the world (looking for) root stocks,” Moore added.

“We also work with a breeding program out of France but those trees can only go to a packing house in Fresno that we work with.

Hopefully, in the future, we will be able to sell some of those items to local growers.”

Moore did not always plan to go into the family’s nursery business.

“I grew up in Rocklin but spent a lot of time at the property,” Moore said. “I was an indoors, high-heels and air-conditioning kind of girl. I studied interior architecture, but after the crash, I went to work temporarily at the nursery. This is my ninth year and I love it.”

Moore said she lives on the nursery property and her daughter, who is 4, “loves it.”

“It’s been fun to watch through her eyes,” Moore said.

In the last year, the family has expanded the business.

“We had a pumpkin patch this year at the corner of Highway 193 and Sierra College Boulevard,” Moore said. “It was fabulous, so much fun. We will be doing it again. We also want to open up to the community more and engage more.”

One way to get to know the Fowler Nursery is during the annual fruit tree sale, which is held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. every Friday and Saturday from Jan. 5 to March 3.

“We sell our favorite varieties that we want the locals to enjoy,” Moore said.

“We won’t sell anything without flavor.” ❖

Struggling to start off the new year in better shape? You may not need a gym membership after all you visit some of the nearby parks in Lincoln.

There are more than two handfuls of parks to choose from. Lincoln boasts of 18 parks within its city limits, the newest ones being the Robert “Chief ” Jimenez Park near Highway 65 and Ferarri Ranch Road, and Dr. Nathan Dubin Park in southwest Lincoln. Each park is unique with its own distinct amenities and features. But they all share places outdoors where you can get more exercise and live a fitter life.

Exercising in Lincoln’s parks is at residents’ reach. Here’s a look at what’s available at different parks, depending on interests.

Team Sports Football, baseball, softball and soccer players will want to try out the lighted complexes at Foskett Regional Park on 1911 Finney Way. Joiner Park on 1710 Nicolaus Road also offers two football/soccer fields and a diamond for either baseball or softball. Peter Singer Park on 371 Danbury Drive and Twelve Bridges Park on 2550 Eastridge Drive also fields available for team sports. eXerCisinG witH little ones As children get bigger and don’t fit too well in strollers anymore, you can still stay in shape by taking advantage of the many playgrounds available at the parks. If you see any playgrounds with poles, do a few pull ups and bar dips to work out the muscles while playing “pirate ship” with the kids. Some parks, like the newer Dr. Nathan Dubin Park, features exercise equipment along the trail, so you can get more of a variety of light strength training in.

PerfeCt for PuPs This 10-acre Auburn Ravine Park is light on human amenities, but it makes up for it with it’s dedicated, off-leash dog park not found anywhere else in Lincoln. Humans and canines alike will enjoy the gorgeous Auburn Ravine preserve that runs along the trail from Moore Road to the cutoff at Ferrari Ranch Road.

Joiner Parkway and Twelve Bridges Drive have Class II bike lanes that span large sections of Lincoln. If you’re interested in mapping a route to a park from your house, try using an app like Google Maps, which features a bicycle mode to chart suggested routes on bicycle. You can also download the City of Lincoln Bike Trail Map from ci.lincoln.ca.us.

Whatever form of exercise best fits you, there’s plenty of creative ways to get a good workout at the parks in Lincoln. As you start the new year, try to visit a different park each weekend to see what’s available and which one’s you prefer. ❖

ummerset Senior Living Community in Lincoln will provide a historical perspective, from the Victorian era through present day, at “Fashion through the Decades” an event that includes vintage fashion displays, live music from multiple eras, vintage gift shops and themed vignettes such as a 1950s ice cream parlor and prohibition speakeasy. Guests will also have the opportunity take selfies in themed rooms representing different decades. This free event accepts donations to the Adopt an Elder Foundation.

This event brings together staff, residents, volunteers and community members to share memories of bygone eras, said Rick Beasley, president of Summerset Senior Living Community.

“Our residents and many community members have wonderful memories to share,” Beasley said. “Seeing the well-preserved clothing and hearing the live music will trigger stories and enable them to celebrate their journey through life by sharing their past experiences with friends and family.”

Guests will see photos and fashion displays as they walk through time from the Titanic sinking to 1950s ice cream parlor with the sounds reflecting the beginnings of rock ‘n’ roll.”

Vintage collectors and entrepreneurs will also be participating.

“Visitors will be able to talk with experts and shop for vintage clothing and accessories at pop-up-shops themed to match the historic backdrop,” Nordhaus said. “A percentage of the proceeds will be donated to the Adopt an Elder Foundation.”

Based in Rocklin, the mission of the Adopt an Elder Foundation is to provide financial and advocacy assistance to

low-income elders that affords them the opportunity to maintain an appropriate degree of independence and quality of life.

Since 2001, the all-volunteer organization has assisted seniors who need some help, but do not require skilled nursing, to find affordable assisted living.

According to Nordhaus, there are many ways to get involved.

“We are looking for volunteers for the day of the event, collectors who’d be willing to show their fashions and resellers with vintage items to offer in pop up shops,” said Nordhaus. ❖

Lincoln’s heartbeat for road biking

T

om Frady is a 70-year-old retired Lincoln resident who accidentally became addicted to cycling. Frady said that, like most people, he’s always had a bicycle and enjoyed riding occasionally. But he really “caught the fever” in 2002 when his daughter was buying a road bike and got one too. Within a couple years, he decided to set aside his Schwinn Varsity and pick up a Bianchi Eros road bike.

“That got me interested in bike-riding,” Frady said, “and being out on the road … it’s kind of an obsession.”

Frady now rides three to four times per week on a Giant OCR road bike with the Lincoln Hills Cyclists for an average

of 50 miles each ride. The club was started in 1999 and now consists of about 150 Lincoln Hills residents from 55 to around 85 years old. Three times a week, the club meets and splits up into groups of varying levels of intensity for 15 to 20 milers, 35 to 40 miles without hills, or with hills, or a 50-mile loop through Auburn, Folsom or Meadow Vista. A team within the club also sets-up, rides and works the Tour de Lincoln every year, according to Fred Higgins, Lincoln Hills Cyclists club president.

Lincoln is a prime location for cycling. From back roads with narrow lanes and scenic views, to new developments with smooth lanes and flat miles, it’s hard to ignore this underlying

heartbeat is for road biking — and that is a fantastic place to begin.

The bikes Entry-level and high-end road bikes are difficult to tell apart because they often look similar. The main difference is weight and quality of components — frame, tires, inner tube, chain, shifters, gears. Entry level bikes are usually made of aluminum or alloy with a lower grade or more basic group of components.

The shifters and gears are not ultra light or expensive, as they can be with high end bicycles.

High-end bicycles are often made of carbon fiber. The aerodynamics and shape are designed to lower wind resistance. The goal for serious cyclists is always to get a lighter bike.

Bicycles can range in price from $200 to thousands of dollars. Asking other cyclists or finding a reliable bike store is useful especially when purchasing a road bike for the first time.

many options. For those downhill dirt devils, throw your bike in a truck and head over to Auburn’s Hidden Falls or Folsom Lake.

Biking around the Ravello at Sorrento development is a good choice for smooth roads in Lincoln. By staying in neighborhoods, there will be less traffic.

For more flat roads, start on Nicholaus Road, then turn down Nelson Lane. There are a few shoulders and roads are narrow.

For a longer, flat ride, Frady recommends venturing out on McCourtney Road to Big Ben Road, or Staying on McCourtney until Fleming then take Gladding and Rioso roads which will connect with Old Highway 65. most every rider has bright, flashing rear lights. There are also lights specifically designed for daylight, and some lights can be seen a by a car a mile away on a straight, flat road.

Cyclists often wear bright clothing or high visibility jackets.

Some even have orange or yellow socks.

“Bright doesn’t help at night,” Frady said. “At night, you need lights and reflective gear.”

Most bike wear is now made with reflective dots, logos or seams to increase visibility at night. It is illegal to ride a bicycle at night without a front lamp, rear red reflector, and white or yellow reflectors on each pedal, shoe or ankle.

Although it is not required by law in California (for those over the age of 18), it is recommended by the Department of Motor Vehicles that bicyclists wear helmets when riding. Bicyclists should use hand signals when turning to notify vehicles, pedestrians or other cyclists before turning, and always ride in the same direction as traffic.

Share the road Although it has not happened to him personally, Frady said it is not uncommon to have a near run-in with a vehicle.

The law requires vehicles to leave three feet between their car and a bicyclist. But depending on the speed of the vehicle, the bicyclist can usually still feel it. Most lanes are 11 feet wide from the double yellow to the white line, and the average car width is 6 feet.

“It gets close sometimes and cars get impatient,” Frady said.

Fred Higgins, president of the Lincoln Hills Cyclists, recommended that beginning cyclists should stay on flat terrain.

“All cyclists should start on good, firm, known roads and ride with others for support in case of a bike part failure or emergency,” he said.

Building endurance and confidence are crucial to eventually venturing to greater distances with a higher volume of traffic.

Lincoln is the place to ride The obvious health benefits are one reason Frady continues to ride. But the overall experience of being out on the back roads of Placer County and really seeing the landscape in a way that is impossible in a car.

“I never have to talk myself into a bike ride,” Frady said. “It’s the wheels on a nice, smooth road; when you have the wind in your face it makes noise in your ears, and when you turn it gets real quiet.”

“You get to see a lot more of the county at a slower speed,” Higgins added. “We also gain experience herding cattle, sheep, goats and dogs off the roads.”

After years of riding along the curves, hills and narrow roads of California in Quincy, Monterey, San Louis Obispo and Plumas County, Frady said Placer County is one of the best places in the state for cyclists.

“From my driveway here (in Lincoln), I have six options to go one place,” Frady said. “There are hundreds of different routes. Sometimes it’s the same roads, always a different route.

Kalbach is a retired Lincoln resident. She worked for many years as a special education teacher and ESL teacher to English learners. After experiencing a heartbreaking situation with her father, Kalbach became an advocate against isolation of vulnerable people and elder abuse.

Kalbach said her father, Phillip Suttles, was targeted by professional thieves, isolated both psychologically and then physically from his family — three children, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren — and then left on a street corner in Tennessee at the age of 95.

“My father fought in WWII and Korea,” recalled Kalbach, in tears.

“He parachuted into enemy territory; he was tough, the life of the party, handsome and he was our family.”

However, having sustained brain damage from several strokes, blindness in one eye, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, Kalbach said her father’s personality and behavior changed.

When he was in his late 80s, Suttles sold his home in Southern California and moved to Northern California. According to Kalbach, these months and years were strewn with scamming Realtors, dishonest

lawyers and thieves. Kalbach said she and her siblings helped their father buy a home, but were surprised when a woman moved in and began to isolate him from his family.

Kalbach said before this woman came into her father’s life, he owned a home, property and had several bank accounts and investments. By the time he passed away in 2013, he was in debt and owned no property.

“They stole absolutely everything he owned,” Kalbach said. “We were a family in crisis and we needed help.”

After seeking help from police, social services, hospitals and newspapers, Kalbach came to the conclusion that something needed to change in California state laws to adequately protect vulnerable people and the elderly.

Kalbach began speaking publicly about elder abuse and the lack of laws protecting them, and learned that this was happening to families across the country. Local independent filmmaker Danna Wilberg is working on a docudrama which will focus on Kalbach’s tragic situation. After hearing

Kalbach has written three proposals for state laws to make the modern definition of undue influence be put into the criminal code 368. The definition of undue influence was recently updated from 1876, but was left out of criminal codes; it is kept in the civil court.

“Undue Influence, the title of my docudrama, addresses horrendous acts committed against the elderly that, unfortunately, by law, are not considered a crime,” Wilberg said. “Cunning and unscrupulous people steal property and money from the elderly by convincing them to sign documents under duress. Many of the victims don’t realize they are being duped by family members, caregivers, lawyers, etcetera until it’s too late.”

Additionally, Kerri Kasem, daughter of DJ and radio personality Casey Kasem, is including the Kalbach family in an upcoming documentary, “Isolated,” which will investigate the issues surrounding elder abuse and isolation of vulnerable people in eight families across the United States.

“All my family is in the documentary,” Kalbach said. “We all

Kalbach stressed that bills need to be passed in order to give police officers, hospitals and social service workers the appropriate tools to protect the most vulnerable people and families.

“It takes courage not to do something,” Kalbach said. “You have to live with that the entire rest of your life and that must take courage knowing you turned your back on something. … No matter what I do, it’s not a failure — unless I do nothing.” ❖

financial things to put on your new year’s to-do list Welcome to 2018! Hard to believe another year has already blown by. With a new year comes new opportunities, and I have compiled the three “C”s you may want to add to YOUR New Year’s to-do list:

1. Compile

The first financial move I like to make each new year is compiling a summary of my finances. Things to include would be assets, debts, documents (statements, estate docs, life insurance docs, etc.), and a budget.

This exercise serves multiple purposes. It is going to jog your memory on forgotten things from the year, like maybe that HSA account you made an opening deposit in and forgot about the last eight months.

It is also going to help keep you organized for when you file your taxes or want to make sure you have gathered all tax related documents for your CPA.

2. Consolidate In 2017, I had the privilege of meeting and working with many new people. I am always surprised by how many people come in with a 401k from their last job, three IRAs, and a SEP IRA for their consulting work that is easing them into retirement. Are you trying to make your life difficult? Who wants that many monthly statements and that many website logins? Why not roll over the 401k and consolidate the three IRAs into one account? The SEP IRA you may want to leave alone for now until you are done making contributions. Let’s simplify the next year for you. It will save you time, energy, space, and sometimes even money if your existing accounts have annual account fees or higher management fees on the separated lower balances.

3. Contribute This was just the third word I thought of that started with the letter C. Let’s be honest, this article wouldn’t be complete without reminding you to check those contributions if you are saving for retirement.

2017 is gone and so is a year of potential for you to compound interest. If your employer offers a retirement plan with a match, consider taking advantage of or increasing contributions to get that match. It is free money.
