I think one of the biggest challenges is finding a fitness routine that fits your schedule. It also helps finding an activity that you enjoy doing, otherwise you’ll find a reason not to stick with it. If you see value in your fitness routine, you’ll overcome the obstacles life throws at you.

I definitely love all the success stories of weight loss and body transformations of my clients. One of my clients trained for a 50K race in 45 days and was able to perform very well in the race. This client was not a runner and completely

stepped outside his comfort zone to train for the race. It’s amazing what you can do when you work hard and stay consistent!

3. For someone who is just starting out or thinking of getting fit, whatdo you recommend?

I would recommend putting yourself in an environment where you feel comfortable and are around others you have similar goals as you. Pick an activity that you enjoy, you’ll more than likely find a reason to stick with a routine when you enjoy what you’re doing.

4. We know exercise is good for physical health, what other benefits have you seen?

The social aspect of fitness is a very underrated benefit. Putting yourself in a community of others who hold you accountable will increase your chances of success. Auburn Fit loves to get outdoors and explore the beauty of our backyard.

The healing powers of nature cannot be replicated, so get outside! Fitness should also be fun, it’s important to enjoy the process and not just focus on the product of exercise.

1. What are the most common obstacles people face when trying to start a fitness routine and how can they beat them?

The most common obstacles are time, knowledge and change. It is very hard for most people to create change in their lives and most often do not give themselves enough time to create the habit. Fitness is a lifestyle and should be seen as a way of life. If a person is able to make the lifestyle approach, then the time obstacle goes away because they are no longer trying to fit their fitness into their schedule but rather scheduling their life around their fitness. Knowledge can be obtained many ways. There are a ton of fitness apps, books and most effective personal trainers that can teach you the whats and hows to get to a healthier you.

2. Tell me about your best fitness success story?

Here at Anytime Fitness we have so many success stories, it’s hard to pick just one. We have members who have lost weight, accomplished Spartan races, done fitness competitions, and were able to finally reduce the cost of the medications that they have been taking because they no longer need them. The one we will share with you is Chelsey’s story. She started with us over two years ago not happy with herself seeking change and not knowing what and how to make that change.

She committed to the process learned and worked with Jolene, one of our personal trainers, and not only lost the weight she had set out to lose but also became a constant presence in the gym lifting. This year she accomplished a Spartan trifecta.

3. For someone who is just starting out or thinking of getting fit, what do you recommend?

The biggest piece of advice that I can give is to be realistic in setting your goals. By setting attainable goals in an attainable time frame, you will see the results. All too often we do not set goals that are attainable in the time frame that was set, and this leads to failures and then to often quitting. Changes to our bodies takes time so tell yourself, this is going to be your year of change, allow yourself those little failures, so you do not quit and remember, “You can never change what you never start.”

4. We know exercise is good for physical health, what other benefits have you seen?

The benefits of physical fitness are numerous and include better health, greater strength, more flexibility, increased energy, improved appearance, and a more positive attitude and mood. Regular exercise can lead to both immediate and long-term benefits. Regular physical activity has been shown to reduce the morbidity and mortality from many chronic diseases.

The benefits of fitness far outweigh the inconveniences of regular exercise. To reap the maximum benefits of physical fitness, remember that your program should include all the main five components of physical fitness. These are the health-related fitness components like cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, muscular endurance and muscle strength.

1. What are the most common obstacles people face when trying to start a fitness routine and how can they beat them?

Most people have at one time or another tried to stick to an exercise program. They try over and over again. Something like a New Year’s resolution, summer, a wedding or a reunion motivates them to try again.

Eventually, they fail because they basically mimic exactly what they did last time. They might decide to diet again or maybe exercise for two hours every day. This represents the definition for insanity — doing the same thing over and over again but expecting a different result. Whatever forced them off track last time, will more than likely surface again. Life gets in the way let’s face it we’re all busy.

We also see many newbies start out with a bang, with huge expectations and no clear plan on how they are going to achieve the results they are after. In order for things to be different, you have to have a plan. You have to be prepared and develop a strategy for overcoming roadblocks posed by work, kids, fatigue or lack of time.

2. Tell me about your best fitness success story?

It’s hard to pick just one. Jess Johnson is a local who basically started overeating at the age of four and had a constant battle with his weight since that age. He’s a big guy, six feet tall so he can carry extra weight but when he graduated Placer High School he was over 300 pounds. Sure he played football and was on the track, and wrestling teams, but that’s still much more weight than he should realistically have been carrying around at 18.

Since becoming our client back in 2008, we’ve helped him focus on why he was working out, what his goals were, and we’ve designed a personalized plan for him. Over the years, he has participated in our small group classes (kickboxing is his personal favorite), fitness 8

challenges and of course personal training.

He’s had some major accomplishments, more than he ever thought he would be capable of including; running a marathon (and several half marathons) and completed a few “tough mud” challenges. What really kicked things into high gear was when he finally committed to making better nutritional choices. Jess participated in our “Hungry No More” program, and lost almost 20 pounds in about eight weeks. Since starting with us, he has lost over 50 pounds and has been able to keep it off. He’s now 40 and holding steady at 235 pounds. He says he is happier now and by all means in better health than he was at 19.

3. For someone who is just starting out or thinking of getting fit, what do you recommend?

If you’re just starting out or even contemplating getting fit, the first thing you absolutely must do is determine your “readiness factor.” Are they really ready to make the necessary changes to improve their quality of life.

From there, they should consider their goals and objectives and hopefully with the help of a fitness professional, set some realistic smart goals. Meeting with a personal trainer that can help you design a program that fits in with your schedule, goals and current fitness level goes a long, long way in keeping you accountable and on track.

Many people start out far “too hot” out of the gate and end up hurting themselves or quitting because they are doing more than their body can handle and seeing any results.

With the right program design and progres-

sive overloading, you can keep putting one foot in front of the other and achieve your fitness goals.

4. We know exercise is good for physical health, what other benefits have you seen?

Wow, this is a long list and one I am happy to share. I can’t even begin to tell you the number of clients that have walked through our doors and told us they don’t like to exercise, but they know they need to do something. We smile and tell them gently that we will not be the least bit surprised when down the road they tell us that they are not only loving their exercise sessions but they are actually somewhat addicted (in a good way) to exercise and can’t imagine life without it. Not only have I witnessed these changes in my clients but they too have told me that exercise makes them happier, relieves their stress, helps them to sleep better, has helped them to lower their blood pressure and improved their blood/lipid test results. They enjoy the social aspect and feel a sense of community with their fitness friends. From my perspective as a fitness professional, I can safely say that exercise has been shown to; reduce body fat and diabetes risk, improve mobility and daily function, help with memory, improves not only muscle strength but bone strength too, helps with depression and your overall mood, reduces your risk of chronic disease and lastly increases your chances of living longer and let’s face it at the end of the day, we all want to live a long, vital, high-functioning life so I say bring on the exercise!

There are many obstacles, but I think the toughest thing is developing a plan that works for the individual. Fitness is not one size-fits-all and neither are our bodies, so I believe everyone needs a custom plan with proper programming for true long-term success.

2. Tell me about your best fitness success story?

My best fitness success story is my client Dino. He has trained consistently with me for over four years, and he puts in a lot of hard work. However, he also trusts

me when I tell him to listen to his body and back off a bit for a few weeks. We periodize his plan to make sure that he is constantly being challenged, but also able to recover and limit the risk of injury.

3. For someone who is just starting out or thinking of getting fit, what do you recommend?

Start small and build “good” habits. Remember, long-term fitness is about positive lifestyle changes that are sustainable, so when I hear a brand new gym member tell me their goal is to work out five to six days a week, I often tell them to start with two to three times a week. Burnout and injuries can happen when you push yourself too hard too fast, so pace yourself and commit to the long run.

A New Year’s cleanse

USING MEYER LEMONS WITH DR. KEMBY DELELLIS

I

t is a brand new year with endless possibilities for what may lie ahead in the next 365 days. One of the top resolutions that cross everyone’s mind is typically, how can I be healthier this year? One fresh ingredient that can aid in the cleansing process after the heavy holiday season is a Meyer lemon.

“All citrus is high in vitamin C. That is what makes them good for the immune system, especially in the fall and winter,” said Dr. Kemby Delellis of Auburn Naturopathic Medicine.

One step people can take in jumpstarting a healthy new year is by utilizing all kinds of lemons and limes.

The citrus carries the same acidity that can be found in a kombucha beverage or a shot of apple cider vinegar, which aids the function of healthy digestion.

“Having a little bit of lemon water or lemon juice before you eat is helpful to stimulate and support your digestion,” Delellis said.

Meyer lemons are a little less acidic and great as a substitution for the super sweet fruit juices or sodas consumed over the holidays. When water just doesn’t satisfy, adding some Meyer lemon juice to water or bubbly mineral water can curb that sweetness or even soda craving.

“It’s a little bit sweeter,” she said.

Also the pith of the lemon, or the “white part,” is really good for veins and can be used to strengthen and 10

treat varicose veins. Another fun fact is that by squeezing citrus onto greens before you eat them the juices will draw out the iron in the greens for an added healthy boost.

Giving your digestive system a boost for the New Year is a great way to detox and is not as harsh as some methods can be.

“I tend to recommend first to basically go to a whole foods-style diet before trying any kind of liver detox or flush,” Delellis said.

It can be harmful to go from one extreme of eating to the other, such as a juice cleanse. Doing so can often make the body feel horrible and if digestion is off, the body won’t flush out the toxins, but rather reabsorb them.

“If you are detoxing you always want your digestion to be really good,” Delellis said. “You want your gut to be really healthy first. Whole foods and anti-inflammatory foods help that.”

CITRUS PARMESAN ASPARAGUS INGREDIENTS:

16 slim asparagus 1 tablespoon olive oil for drizzling 1 tablespoon pepitas and sunflower seeds salt and pepper to taste ¼ cup Parmesan Half the juice of a Meyer lemon INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. 2. Line a baking sheet with foil.

3. Rinse and cut off ends of asparagus and arrange on baking sheet.

4. Drizzle with olive oil.

5. Sprinkle with Parmesan.

6. Add salt and pepper to taste.

7. Toss with hands to coat evenly.

8. Place in oven and bake for 20-25 minutes until tips start to brown.

9. Remove from oven and sprinkle with more parmesan if desired.

10. Add pepitas and sunflower seeds to the top and serve warm.

CHICKPEA CAULIFLOWER KALE WARM SALAD WITH MEYER LEMON VINAIGRETTE INGREDIENTS:

INSTRUCTIONS:

1 can of chickpeas 1 small organic cauliflower 2 cups kale ½ red onion pink Himalayan salt and pepper to taste 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1 teaspoon onion powder Dressing: ¼ fresh Meyer lemon juice plus zest 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar ½ cup olive oil plus more for drizzling 1 teaspoon coconut sugar pink Himalayan salt and pepper to taste 1 teaspoon cumin

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. 2. Drain the canned chickpeas and pat dry with a towel before transferring them to a foillined baking sheet.

3. Add chickpeas to the baking sheet with chopped cauliflower and drizzle with olive oil, garlic powder, onion powder, pepper and pink Himalayan salt.

4. Roast in oven for 35 minutes.

5. Toss kale in a bowl with enough olive oil to lightly coat and more salt to taste.

6. Add the tossed kale to the baking sheet after 35 minutes and continue roasting for another 10 to 15 minutes until cauliflower is caramelized and kale is crispy.

7. In a separate bowl add lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, minced garlic, cumin and salt.

Whisk while adding ½ cup of olive oil.

8. Combine roasted chickpeas, kale and cauliflower into a serving bowl and add the chopped onion. Pour desired amount of dressing over the salad as a vinaigrette.

9. Zest the lemon on the top and serve warm.

SUBSTITUTIONS FOR THE MORE POPULAR HOLIDAY HEAVY INGREDIENTS Butter

Cheese

Coconut oil is a great substitute for butter, especially in baking. It is antiviral and supports immune system.

Nut cheeses are really popular and wonderful for substituting the creamy cravings. Coconut milk, almond milk and cashew milk are great for that dairy creaminess.

Sugar

Red meat

It is recommended to just use less sugar, but Stevia is one substitute that is used quite a bit. Another option is to use a more natural sugar like honey or fruit.

There are a lot of pros and cons to saturated fat so the goal is to seek out better quality. Grass-fed local meats are the way to go. For other meats, wild-caught or free-range are also key words to look out for.

VEGAN MEYER LEMON TO-GO BARS INGREDIENTS FOR CRUST:

INGREDIENTS FOR CREAM:

1 cup almond flour 1 cup gluten-free oats 1/3 cup coconut sugar ¼ teaspoon pink Himalayan salt 3 tablespoons melted coconut oil 2 tablespoons coconut milk 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

¾ cup raw cashews ½ cup organic maple syrup ¼ cup coconut butter ¼ cup plus 1 tablespoon Meyer lemon juice 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/8 teaspoon pink Himalayan salt 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon arrowroot powder

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and line an 8-by-8-inch baking pan with parchment paper.

2. Combine almond flour, oats, coconut sugar and salt in a bowl and mix well.

3. Add melted coconut oil, coconut milk and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients.

4. The result should be crumb-like.

5. Set aside 2/3 of the crust mixture and press the remaining into the lined pan.

6. Cover with a paper towel to avoid drying out when making the lemon cream.

7. Boil a pot of water on the stove. Once boiling, remove from heat and add cashews. Soak cashews in boiling water for about 45 minutes.

8. After 45 minutes the cashews should be soft. Drain them.

9. Add cashews, maple syrup, coconut butter, Meyer lemon juice, vanilla and salt to a blender and blend on high until smooth.

10. Add arrowroot powder and blend until combined.

11. Pour the lemon cream over the prepared crust and spread evenly.

12. Sprinkle the remaining crumb mixture on top.

13. Optional add some lemon zest to the top as well.

14. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes.

15. Place on cooling rack then refrigerate until thoroughly chilled before cutting into squares and serving.

A

uburn local, Sally Dawley has made quite the name for herself over the past several years. Many see her at Auburn City Council meetings, Meddlers or recognize her truck driving around town. However, the community commonly notices Dawley is as the “butt lady of Auburn.”

“It kind of got hooked,” Dawley said. “I am proud to be the butt lady of Auburn.”

While many snicker at the name, to Dawley and Auburn residents, this nickname is a term of endearment. Dawley is not easily missed walking around town with her tools and her neon yellow shirt with “Auburn the beautiful” on the font and “keep it clean ‘one butt’ at a time” on the back.

It all started on Oct. 1, 2014. Dawley was living on the street behind the iconic clock tower and went out for one of her daily walks.

“I got tired of going on my walks and seeing cigarette butts everywhere,” she said.

It was then that she started walking with her broom, dust pan, tongs and a counter to keep track.

“That’s when I got started and hooked,” Dawley said. “I am shooting for a million.”

She is getting very close to her goal and as of press time is currently at 958,441 cigarette butts and counting daily. The plan is to celebrate her one-millionth in the parking lot of Mels Diner.

Some days Dawley will go out up to five times for several hours, picking up hundreds or thousands at a time. She will be out in the community every day as long as it is not raining.

“It’s really hard for me to go someplace, especially if I don’t have my tools, and I see butts here and there,” she said.

Even when she doesn’t have her tools with her, she sometimes will use a tissue in her pocket to pick up a few scattered.

“It just irritates me that they are out there,” Dawley said.

In her retirement, Dawley has found that this is a great way to spend her time. People who drive by will often honk and thank her for what she does.

“It’s my exercise,” she said.

Dawley also continues to work part-time three afternoons a week in the school bus yard she used to work at as a full time bus driver.

Currently she has a five-gallon jug containing almost 8,000 butts. She will store what she collects until she can properly dispose of them in nearby garbage bins.

“I usually throw them in the trash cans in the area,” she said.

Dawley welcomes any additional assistance, however, as far as she knows, she is only one who does this dirty job. Her radius extends from Old Town and Downtown Auburn to the fairgrounds and many of the shopping center parking lots. Behind stores tend to host the most amount of cigarette butts.

“I am just amazed that businesses do not provide their smoking workers with an ashtray of some sort behind their store,” Dawley said.

In addition to getting them off the streets and into proper waste bins, Dawley is constantly shooing away birds and dogs that tend to ingest the butts, which are poisonous to them.

“I talk to so many people on my walks,” she said.

“I am just trying to get that message out.”

A room with a view

NORMA HARRIS LOVES WHAT MAKES AUBURN UNIQUE STORY AND PHOTOS BY PAIGE SMITH

I

n 1953, Kent Harris brought his wife, Norma, up to Applegate to look at a plot of land where he told her he would build their house. All she could see were manzanita bushes.

Puzzled, she asked, “Where’s the view? You said there was a view.”

He answered. “If you climb that tree, you can see it.”

“He built this house 63 years ago, and I’m still here,” Norma laughed.

Norma was born July 1, 1925, in the small lumber town of Weed. When she turned 20, she met Kent, a second lieutenant coming home from the army and WWII. “I met him in January, we were engaged in May, and married in October. It was a quick romance,” Norma smiled.

Kent’s parents owned Harris Welding Works in Citrus Heights. After marriage, Norma began keeping books for the shop. They lived in Citrus Heights nine years, but Kent’s love of the mountains did not wane.

After the move to Applegate, Norma was heavily involved in PTA while her three daughters were in school. She formed the Applegate Well Baby Clinic and soon after, the couple added a son, Kent, Jr., to the family.

Kent and Norma purchased the flourishing business from his parents, and almost 20 years later, they decided to buy Auburn Iron Works, in 1973. Just four short months after that, however, Kent suffered a fatal heart attack while skiing at Boreal Ridge and passed away. Norma explains feeling lost but also knew she needed to learn more about 16

the business, so she enrolled in Placer Adult School’s welding class.

In 1975 she joined Auburn’s Chamber of Commerce and wanted to be mayor.

“You had to live in the city, and unless I wanted to put a cot in the shop, I couldn’t,” Norma said. “So, I decided the next best office to hold would be president of the Chamber of Commerce.”

Eight years later, she did become president of the chamber, and she explained that joining the board is what brought her to success. In that time, she has contributed tirelessly to Auburn and its service clubs, her church and local schools (providing scholarships annually).

In the past 63 years she has seen Auburn change immensely.

“I can recall when there was no interstate through Auburn — just the fourlane Highway 40, with

Norma does see the benefits of the growth, however, and how it has positively impacted the community.

“Auburn now has goods and services to rival the largest cities, whereas we used to have to drive to Sacramento to buy most of our things.”

Norma said.

While the present is constantly changing, and the area is expanding, for Norma it is important to make sure that residents and tourists still enjoy the beloved view of what makes Auburn unique.

“I’d like the planners to carefully consider architecture and building size when approving business expansion,” Norma said. “Growth is necessary, but careful planning is essential.”

While Norma enjoys the company of her dog, Toby, given to her from her

longtime companion, Bruce Norton, who passed away in 2013, she has remained active in her family business at Harris Industrial Gases. She retired when she turned 80; however, she makes sure to receive reports from each of the four locations weekly, monthly and annually.

“Four generations of the same family, four locations, and 82 years in business,” Norma smiled thinking about how far her business has come. Her daughter Kathleen is currently president, and her grandson Aaron Haupt is chief operating officer and contracts negotiator. In addition, her other three children serve on the corporation’s board of directors.

With a flourishing family business, a breathtaking patio view, and a wonderful community, it is easy to see why she never left.

“You won’t find a friendlier place than Auburn,” Norma said. “That is why I am staying right where I am.”

he choice is yours, whether you are craving coffee, beer, wine, cider or kombucha, The Pour Choice has it all. Jordan and Melinda Minyard, lifetime residents of Auburn wanted to create a place that brings people together to enjoy company and have a taste of the various options in Auburn.

“For us, this is a community hub, we want this to be an extension of people’s living room,” Jordan said. “For people to feel like when they are here, it feels like home.”

He emphasizes that he doesn’t want guests to come in and feel like they need to purchase food or drinks to stay.

They invite guests to bring food from neighboring restaurants and want to make sure everyone feels welcome.

There are 28 taps, which include 18 beers, six wines (three red and three white), two kombuchas, one hard cider, and one nitro cold brew coffee.

“We want to show the difference of what makes craft unique,” he said. “So when it comes to beer, we want to work with independent, craft brewers that are unique.”

For the couple, their goals on what kind of business they wanted to create came to mind for the locals and guests to the Auburn area.

The coffee is third wave coffee, meaning specialty and high-quality coffee. Jordan explained it as coffee’s answer to craft beer and wine.

“Our goal is to highlight craft,” Jordan said. “We want to show the difference of what makes craft unique.”

The ambience inside The Pour Choice is simple and as Jordan puts it, timeless.

“My wife and I are both designers, our goal with the black and white is to be very timeless,” Jordan said. “As years pass, it feels timeless and we can add and remove things as time goes.”

2018 is already setting up to be a success for the Minyards as they are planning on bringing small plate foods to the table. Small food plates that are in the works include: meat and cheese boards, specialty toast, poached eggs, and other varieties.

“Our goal is to create another option rather than opening up something and saying, ‘Oh, we can do this better,’ we are trying to do something entirely new,” Jordan said.

The overall goal of the newest taproom, is to highlight craft, and to show that the bit of extra money being spent is shown because of the time and effort put into doing it.

When coming to The Pour Choice, Jordan assures that their desire is for this to be a place to come for beer, not the place to come for beer. He wants guests to enjoy the beers on tap, but then go out to the local breweries to enjoy their other beers.

“Delicious, consistent, and approachable,” Jordan said as he discussed the importance of craft and community.

“All those things can exist together.”

W

hat makes a great pizza place? The crust? The atmosphere? The beer to wash it down? Whatever it is, it would seem that The Basement on Main Street, formerly Main Street Pizza, has the “secret ingredients” to ongoing success and mouthwatering pizza.

In 2003, Lee Shahin and his wife Laurie opened a bottle shop and tasting bar called Basement Wines on Main Street. After several years of business, Shahin opened Main Street Pizza, six doors down. Four years ago Shahin merged the two establishments which resulted in what is now called The Basement on Main Street. “We just try to do things the right way,” said Shahin. As it nears 15 years of business in the small town of Colfax, it would seem that The Basement is doing just that.

Shahin has been in business since he was 21 living in the Bay Area. He said it was a slow progression from city life to the eventual move to Colfax. “The first year we knew five people,” he said. “By the next year, we knew 500.” Shahin is very involved in the community and said he makes a point to try and remember everyone’s name, or at least their faces.

THE BASEMENT ON MAIN STREET

The eats The Basement offers a full menu of pizza, salads, appetizers, breadsticks and sandwiches.

“We make everything ourselves,” said Katee Dietrich, a Colfax native and manager for the past nine years. “We make the dough, ranch, salad dressings, white and red sauce; we don’t buy it.”

In addition to managing the restaurant, Dietrich fills the role of a bartender, waitress, cook or whatever is needed. “We all do it all,” she said.

The most popular pizzas are the spicy Thai, veggie and Basement veggie. The Spicy Thai begins with a layer of house-made Thai sauce, topped with chicken, green and red onions, cilantro and peanuts.

The Basement veggie is made with white sauce and covered with tomatoes, spinach, artichoke hearts, red and green onions, mushroom and smothered with garlic. Dietrich’s favorite, the chicken deluxe, is a white sauce pizza with garlic, bacon, mushroom and of course, loads of chicken. Any of The Basement’s pizza’s can be made on gluten-free crust.

Dietrich said the hot wings are also popular among customers. The wings, cooked to juicy perfection can be dipped into a variety of housemade sauces including Buffalo, Thai barbecue, garlic parmesan or atomic.

The drinks With 20 micro brews on tap with rotating handles and a variety of wines, this family-owned restaurant and bar is a great place to relax with friends and enjoy some local flavors. Some of the local beers are from breweries like Auburn Ale House in Auburn, Sudwerk Brewing Company in Davis, Ol’ Republic Brewery in Nevada City and Crispin Cider made in Colfax.

The impressive variety of reds and whites offered at the restaurant include some from local wineries like Nevada City Winery, Montoliva, and others from Lodi, Amador, Napa and Sonoma.

One of the petite sirah’s offered is the owner’s Two Monsters, named after his sons. The wine is made by Montoliva Vineyard and Winery and the profit from wine sales goes into a college fund for Shahin’s sons who are currently 10 and 13 years old. This wine recently won at the Orange County Fair for Top 39 Wines out of about 3,000 wines.

Wine can be purchased by the bottle or glass.

The vibe Walking into the restaurant, even for the first time, feels like walking into a familiar place to sit back, relax and indulge in a slice of hot pizza and cold beer. Upstairs, there is a large room with arcade games. Historic photos of Colfax hang on painted brick walls, and hand-written beer and wine lists on chalkboard add to the overall charm. “I love the environment and the quality of the food is actually worth the price,” said Alicia Lyman, a Colfax resident who enjoyed a midweek lunch at The Basement.

The advancement of social media has helped business within the past few years, and for many, this off-thebeaten-path restaurant is exactly what they’re looking for; the setting unpretentious, warm and friendly.

When asked what the best part of owning a pizza place and bar is, Shahin didn’t hesitate to respond. “Meeting folks and talking to the regulars,” he said. “It’s super fun to meet people traveling, too.” Shahin added he has welcomed travelers from the Isle of Man, Ireland and Australia into his establishment. “I usually ask, ‘did you break down?’ or ‘are you lost?’” laughed Shahin.

Whether Colfax-born or just passing through, The Basement has become a preferred place in the city.

“We try and make people happy,” Shahin said.

tories are universal. They reach across countries, cultures and generations and can be used to teach, entertain and amuse. To help inspire new tellers and continue the art of storytelling, the Foothill Storytelling Guild is again hosting the Auburn Winter Storytelling Festival.

This all-day, third annual event is brimming with stories in all shapes and sizes, from all ages and experience levels of tellers from Auburn, Nevada City, Penn Valley, Palm Springs, Sebastopol and Lincoln.

The festivities will begin with a children’s hour featuring musical stories from entertainer Joan McCammon and early childhood professor Ed Lewis.

After several local children’s groups gain experience speaking before audiences, a workshop for those learning the art of telling will take place.

The workshop, lead by Mariana deCroes, will focus on helping kids deal with bullying, lack of confidence and fear and other important topics through telling stories. “It’s a wonderful workshop for any parent, or grandparent or teacher,” said Chery Anderson, publicity director for the Foothill Storytelling Guild and one of this year’s featured tellers. “Anyone working with children would be able to give these techniques.”

anyone in the audience can stand up and tell a story. Next the Liar’s Contest will test the art of fibbing and the biggest fish will win a trophy. There is a five-minute limit to each lie. It must be family-friendly and told with no notes or props.

The evening’s schedule concludes with several experienced tellers who will delight, shock and entertain audiences with their tales. Tellers include Tom Wade, Linda Kennedy, Chery Anderson, award-winning international teller Izzi Tooninsky and Mariana deCroes who will tell about her experiences living in England, India, Portugal and Spain.

In previous years, there was a saga of a lovely, young heifer that was taken to be serviced by a big ugly Brahma bull; the tale of the holiday pie lost from the top of Dad’s car when he went for batteries; and last year the story of the surrender of General Lee. What will it be this time? Only the Storytelling Festival will tell.
