Serendipity

Finding good things accidentally

O

ne of the definitions of serendipity is “a seeming gift for finding good things accidentally.” It is the perfect name for the Old Town Auburn storefront owned by Lynn Carpenter. When it comes to last minutes gifts this year, Serendipity is truly a one-stop-shop for the most unique goods imaginable.

Some of the more popular items include Down to Earth Pottery dishes that are designed as candle holders, but can be utilized in a handful of different ways.

The dishes are made in Colorado in three different shapes and range from small to large. Customers have commented that the dishes are great for jewelry, wallets and watches, and even as a drip catcher on the table from an open bottle of wine.

“No two are exactly alike,” Carpenter said. “They are all designed to accommodate candles.”

These unique dishes are paired with her selection of coconut wax blend candles that are fragrance free, drip free and paraffin free, which means no soot.

“Unscented candles are kind of hard to find,” she noted.

The line of soaps and lotions that she carries also do very well as a last-minute gift purchase. The Naked Bee line of lotions and personal care come from Tennessee and are all natural.

“This is a very important line for me,” Carpenter said.

The soaps in the store are handmade in Berkley and are so fragrant that they are covered so as not to overwhelm. The most notable soap would have to be the one scented as dirt.

“It actually smells okay,” Carpenter laughed. “It would be a fun gag gift or even a man-cave gift.”

Serendipity is lined from wall to wall with products from greeting cards to nostalgic candies to organic baby toys and locally made train letters. Lynn and Ross Carpenter opened the store originally as an antique shop in 1984 as the first tenants of the building where the art gallery is now.

It wasn’t until 1993 that they moved to the current location. Lynn and Ross retired from defense electronics in Silicon Valley.

“We were looking around for something else to do,” she said.

They specialized in refinishing oak furniture until transitioning into collectibles.

“Reluctantly at first because we didn’t believe in collectibles we believed in the real thing,” Carpenter said. “We also knew the antique business was changing.”

Whether it is a last minute gift, a gag gift or something perfect for that special someone, Serendipity most likely has something ideal stocked on the shelves with complimentary gift wrap included.
