For many of these clients, the Meals on Wheels driver is their only contact with the outside world and critical services they would otherwise be unable to access. In addition to helping area seniors receive sufficient balanced daily nutrition, drivers are trained to recognize issues that

may be affecting their clients so that Mizell staff can refer them to available resources. The Mizell Senior Center Meals On Wheels Program is a critical component in the overall health and wellbeing safety net for area seniors. Mizell has made a commitment that no senior in the Coachella Valley – living alone and at risk for food insecurity – should go hungry. WildLights at The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens open nightly through Sunday, December 24, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. with last admission at 8:30 p.m. This year the popular holiday tradition, presented by the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation, is celebrating 25 years of transforming the zoo into a twinkling winter wonderland. In celebration of its silver anniversary, The Living Desert has called in Santa’s reindeer and guests can see real reindeer up-close, free with paid admission. The two reindeer, Cookie, a female of eight years, and Thunder, an eight-month old male are home at The Living Desert throughout WildLights. A select number of guests can purchase a personal experience with the reindeer that includes feeding them a graham cracker and a unique photo opportunity. In addition to marveling at the more than a million colorful, sparkling holiday lights, guests will encounter a herd of life-size, luminescent animal lanterns featuring zebra, giraffe

and cheetahs, explore newly added pathways and stroll through the popular tunnel of lights flashing to holiday music. Animal encounters and keeper chats, camel and carousel rides, and entertainment are also offered nightly. In true WildLights tradition, the festive G-scale model trains with more than 3,300 feet of track will be decked out for the holidays. Then apply a thin layer of car wax. Follow wax directions and buff off with a clean, dry towel. Fill a small jar with notes and tiny mementos, then tuck it at the bottom of your holiday decorations when you box them up. Social Security Matters

“Ask Rusty” - Social Security Credit for Military Pay Dear Rusty: I have tried to contact Social Security many times but been put on hold for over 40 minutes, received no call back, etc. Also, I tried to find out online at my S.S. account, but got no answers to my questions so I’m hoping you can help. I served in the U.S. Navy from March 5, 1951 until December 2, 1954, with an Honorable Discharge for medical reasons. Looking at my Social Security earnings statement, I never received credit for my earnings while serving in the U.S. Navy in 1952, 1953, and 1954, and for 1951 I only received earnings credit for $120. In the Veterans Administration booklet “Federal Benefits for Veterans Dependents and Survivors” the following paragraph is on page 135: “non-contributory Social Security earnings of $160 a month may be credited to Veterans who served after Sept.15, 1940 and before 1957, including attendance at service academies”. Can you check and see whether I should get credit from my military earnings, and if my Social Security check should be $160 more than it is? Signed: Navy Veteran Dear Navy Veteran: First of all, thank you for your service to our country. Although military pay is now considered taxable Social Security income, military earnings were not included as Social Security earnings prior to 1957. This is the reason that your earnings while in

the Navy from 1951 to 1954 aren’t reflected in your Social Security earnings record, and thus may not have been included in computing your Social Security benefit amount. You can find out more about this in the Social Security publication “Military Service and Social Security” at this online link: https://www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN-0510017.pdf. I suspect that your $120 of earnings for 1951 was for part time employment prior to you joining the Navy in March of that year. The information you quote from the VA booklet is consistent with Social Security’s publication referenced above, namely, “earnings of $160 a month may be credited to Veterans who served after Sept. 15, 1940 and before 1957...” Note that in the above referenced SS publication it also states that “In all cases, the additional earnings are credited to the earnings that we average over your working lifetime, not directly to your monthly benefit amount”. What that means is that in your lifetime earnings record, Social Security will give you earnings credit equal to $160/month during the years that you served and that will be included in your lifetime earnings record when they compute your Social Security benefit amount. It doesn’t mean they will add $160 to your monthly Social Security benefit amount. For information, when Social Security computes your benefit amount,

they use your 35 highest years of earnings (adjusted for inflation). So if those 35 years of higher earnings used to compute your benefit were after you left military service in 1954, your years of military service wouldn’t have been part of the benefit calculation formula. Your unfortunate experience trying to contact Social Security for these answers is an excellent example of why The AMAC Foundation offers this alternative source of Social Security information to America’s seniors. Once again, thank you for your service. Essentially, a low-earning (or no-earning) spouse gets half of the higher-earning spouse’s Primary insurance Amount only if the spousal benefit starts at their full retirement age - otherwise it will be less than 50%. And this is why the blanket statement “a low income spouse gets one half of the other spouse’s benefit” is a very misleading oversimplification of how spousal benefits work. Dezart Performs presents award-winning play ‘The Rabbit Hole’ January 12-21

After the triumphant opening of its 10th season with the production of THE LEGEND OF GEORGIA McBRIDE, Dezart Performs continues to break new ground with its second production of the season – RABBIT HOLE, a Pulitzer Prize-winning play. Habitat for Humanity of the Coachella Valley Dedicates Veterans’ Houses On December 20, 2017, Habitat for Humanity Coachella Valley turned over the keys to the veterans selected for the houses on San Benito Way in Palm Desert. These two houses were built in partnership with the City of Palm Desert, who donated the land, and The Home Depot Foundation whose grant funded the initial construction. On December 20th, Executive Director of HFHCV Dave Thornton turned over symbolic chocolate keys to the new owners, Edward Lanning

and Janelle and Adrian Robles. Speakers included Patrick Swarthout, Chairman of the HFHCV Board and the Palm Desert Mayor. Guests included members of the Palm Desert City Council, plus volunteers who worked on finishing the house and landscaping, and suppliers. By Alison Elsner In Germany, Hungary, Israel, Italy and Russia, New Year’s Eve is known as Silvester. In France, Algeria and Brazil, it’s called Revéillon, and in Scotland it’s called Hogmanay. The final day of the Gregorian calendar is celebrated around the world with traditions that include quiet reflection, family and social gatherings, feasting, gift exchanges, public events, countdowns and watching fireworks. Samoa, Tonga and Kiritimati on Christmas Island are the first places to welcome the New Year while American Samoa and Baker Island in the United States are among the last. Probably the most well-known event in the United States is New York City’s ball drop in Times Square, held since 1907. Time balls were invented so that sailors could adjust their chronometers while at sea, able to watch for a time ball to drop at a specific time. The first time ball was installed in 1829 in Portsmouth, England. The U.S. Naval Observatory followed suit and began dropping a time ball in 1845.

Today’s Big Ball weighs in at 11,875 pounds, measures 12 feet in diameter and has 2,688 Waterford Crystals that refract light equivalent to 32,256 light bulbs. Computer controls were added in 1995. Each year, at least 90,000 people gather in Times Square to watch the 60-second ball descend 70 feet and maybe give each other a New Year’s smooch, while millions watch on television. For those who don’t want to jostle the Times Square crowds or watch the ball drop on TV snuggled up in jammies, there are lots of New Year’s Eve celebration choices in the Coachella Valley. Traveling around the internet can be dangerous, even if you know what you’re doing. One way to be safer is to understand website addresses, called URLs. A URL is the address of a webpage somewhere on the internet. It means Uniform Resource Locator, and it tells you the location of the webpage ... except when it doesn’t because it’s a fake. All it takes is one single letter to be out of place to change a safe site to a dangerous one. The thieves are hoping you don’t notice. When you put your cursor over an address, link or graphic in your email (called a mouseover), the real address will show up. That’s a good way to determine whether the email or website might be a scam. For example, if the email appears to be from someone you know, a different email address might show up. Don’t click it! Some of the common URL extensions (the letters at the end of the address) are: .com, .net, .edu, .gov and .org. If you see any that say .ru, that’s Russia. One ending in .cn is China. Unless you’re certain of the email sender, don’t open it. The beginning of a safe URL (say, a website where you do business) might have https ... the S stands for a secure site. It’s usually on websites that sell things and expect you to put in your credit-card number. The majority of these sites are safe ... except when they’re not. If your local senior center, library or recreation department offers internet safety classes, go! The more you know, the better the odds of staying safe as you cruise the internet. Turning failure into success It’s called the Museum of Failure but the touring exhibition that opened in Los Angeles this holiday season is anything but a failure, says the Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC]. Samuel West, a Swedish doctor who calls himself an “innovation researcher,” has put together a collection of 100 real clunkers that some of the world’s most successful companies produced and recalled over the years. And, it is attracting quite a bit of interest. It in-

Jimmie Smith of East Orange, NJ is a lottery ticket hoarder. He has old tickets going back many, many months and doesn’t check them very often. But, when a local newscast reported that a jackpot awarded

over a year ago remained unclaimed, he decided to check his cache of tickets and found the winning numbers, worth $24.1 million, says the Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC]. Smith told the news service, UPI, that he’s been playing the lottery since the 1960s, but is never in a hurry to check the winning numbers. “I always told myself, ‘I’ll check them when I have the time,’” he said. Recipe of the Week Kitchen Diva By Angela Shelf Medearis

Feast on Fish at Christmas I've been reading about Christmas customs, holiday meals and traditional feasts in Europe. One of the things I love the most about studying food is the insight that culinary traditions give you into history and culture. Studying culinary traditions is a wonderful way to discover history through food. I particularly enjoyed reading about a tradition called The Feast of the Seven Fishes, also know as The Vigil, along with several delicious recipes for preparing fish. The fish often is used as a symbol of Christianity. Because of persecution faced by the early church, when a Christian met a stranger in the road, the Christian sometimes drew one arc of a simple fish outline in the dirt. If the stranger drew the other arc, both believers knew they were in good company. Preparing and eating seafood on Christmas Eve in celebration of the birth of Christ is an old European tradition. Many families abstain from eating meat and serve only fish or other types of seafood on Christmas Eve. This traditional dinner is a southern Italian custom in which a meal of at least seven different kinds of seafood is served before midnight

on Christmas Eve. A typical feast features various types of fish, eel, octopus, calamari, mussels, clams, sardines, shrimp and lobster. While researching the preparation of the seafood for this feast, I discovered a delicious recipe for Pasta with Sardines and Lemon Caper Sauce. This budget-friendly recipe is packed with flavor while using only a few, high-quality ingredients. It's the perfect dish for feeding and serving a crowd during the holidays.

Pasta with Sardines and Lemon Caper Sauce ￭ 8 ounces angel hair (capellini) or spaghetti pasta ￭ 7 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for drizzling ￭ 1 cup Panko breadcrumbs ￭ 1 package (about 4.3 ounces) imported sardines, in pure olive oil, drained and oil reserved ￭ 1/2 medium onion, minced ￭ 3 cloves garlic, peeled and minced ￭ 2 teaspoons lemon zest ￭ 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes ￭ 1 teaspoon salt ￭ 1 teaspoon ground black pepper ￭ 3 tablespoons capers, rinsed ￭ 1/4 cup lemon juice, plus 3 tablespoons for sprinkling ￭ 3 tablespoons fresh parsley or basil, chopped

Cook pasta according to package directions. Drain, reserving a cup of the pasta cooking water. Rinse pasta under cool water for a moment or two to keep the noodles loose. Reserve. In a large skillet or saute pan, heat 3 tablespoons of the oil. Add the Panko breadcrumbs and toast until lightly browned and crunchy, stirring occasionally. Remove breadcrumbs to a bowl, season with salt and pepper, and set aside. Add the remaining 4 tablespoons of olive oil and the reserved sardine oil to the pan and turn the heat to medium. Once the olive oil is hot, add the onion, garlic, lemon zest, crushed

red pepper, salt and pepper. Cook until the onions are soft and translucent (watch carefully so that mixture doesn't burn). Add the sardines and capers to the pan. Saute for about 2 minutes until warmed through, breaking up sardines into smaller pieces as you saute. When the sardines begin to turn golden, slowly stir in the lemon juice. Add the cooked pasta and freshly chopped parsley or basil to the pan. Toss pasta to evenly coat with sauce, mixing well with the other ingredients. If the pasta seems too dry, add a little of the reserved pasta cooking water, 1 tablespoon at a time, to loosen it a bit. The pasta should not be thick or heavy, the noodles should be lightly coated with oil. Add additional salt, pepper, pepper or chili pepper flakes to taste, if desired.
