Food safety is important, but really, why guess when the technology is so easy and accurate?

Last year, while we were waiting for Santa to arrive on Christmas Eve, I put out boxes of cereal, bowls, spoons and a pitcher for milk. I also bought a fruit tray, which I just put out in the morning. The kids ate a proper breakfast, and I still had the kitchen to myself to start preparations. It worked great!”

Social Security Matters

“Ask Rusty” - Computing Spousal Benefits Dear Rusty: I read an article today, which talked about how one spouse’s benefits should be 50% of the other spouse’s and about something called a “spousal boost”.

I do not make 50% of my husband’s Social Security benefit and am wondering if I qualify for this “spousal boost.” Signed: Feeling Cheated Dear Feeling Cheated: Oh, so many times I have seen written that “a low income spouse gets one half of the other spouse’s benefit,” or something similar to that. Unfortunately this is a very misleading oversimplification of Social Security’s spousal benefit rules. To illustrate, we need to start with a few definitions: First, all Social Security benefits start with an eligible worker’s Primary Insurance Amount, or “PIA”. The PIA is the amount that a worker is gets at their full retirement age (FRA). Retirement benefits (what the worker gets) and spousal benefits (what a lower-earning or no-earning spouse gets) are both reduced if the benefit is started before full retirement age.

For ease of discussion, let’s assume here that the husband is the higherearning spouse (it could easily be the other way around) and that the husband’s PIA is $2000. To show how spousal benefits work let’s use a couple of different scenarios: If the wife was a stay at home Mom who is not eligible for her

own Social Security retirement benefits because her lifetime career was running the household, raising the kids, and caring for elderly parents, she would get ½ of the husband’s PIA if (and only if) her spousal benefit started at her FRA. If it started any earlier than that it would be reduced to as little as 35% of the husband’s PIA if the spousal benefit started at age 62 and the wife’s FRA is 66. The portion of her husband’s PIA that the wife is entitled to is reduced by a fraction of a percent for each month before her FRA that the benefit starts. Example at age 62 with an FRA of 66: Instead of 50% of husbands PIA, wife gets 35%, or $700 (instead of $1000).

If, instead, the wife is eligible for her own Social Security retirement benefits because she worked enough years, but she took some years off for family purposes and has a smaller PIA of $750, her spousal benefit is computed somewhat differently. The wife’s PIA is compared to one half of her husband’s PIA to arrive at a “spousal boost” - an amount that will be added to her own retirement benefit if her spousal benefit starts at her full retirement age. In this example, half of the husband’s PIA ($1000) minus the wife’s PIA ($750) equals $250. If the wife’s spousal benefit starts at or after her full retirement age, the full $250 will be added to her own retirement benefit. But if her spousal benefit starts earlier, the $250 will

be reduced by a fraction of a percent for each month taken early. To illustrate: Taken at age 62 with an FRA of 66, the wife’s retirement benefit would be reduced by 25% for early retirement and she would get $562. If her spousal benefit starts (her husband starts his retirement benefit) when she is 66, the full “spousal boost” will be added to her reduced retirement benefit and her new benefit would be $812 ($562 plus $250). But if the spousal benefit starts before her FRA, say at age 65, the spousal boost will be reduced to about $229 (about an 8.3% reduction) making her total benefit $791. Which is, again, less than one-half of the husband’s PIA. Essentially, a low-earning (or no-earning) spouse gets half of the higher-earning spouse’s Primary insurance Amount only if the spousal benefit starts at their full retirement age - otherwise it will be less than 50%. And this is why the blanket statement “a low income spouse gets one half of the other spouse’s benefit” is a very misleading oversimplification of how spousal benefits work.

Walking in Winter Walking is one of the best exercises seniors can do. It helps with depression, blood pressure, mental acuity, muscle strength, bone mass, joint support, balance and more. For some of us, however, walking outdoors can be a problem now that cold weather has arrived.

Along with freezing temperatures, snow and ice on sidewalks can be treacherous.

There are ways around that, however. You only need to think of indoor places that are big enough. ￭ If you live near a big mall, ask if earlymorning walking is allowed. Not only will it be climate-controlled, but the floors are flat and many have benches along the way. ￭ Is there a gym with an indoor track near you, or a rec center? How about the high school’s gym or the hallways before or after school? Or a large business complex, or bigbox store? If nothing else, take a few extra laps around the grocery store’s outermost aisles. ￭ What you need to get started: a couple friends and sturdy shoes. Carry your cellphone in an interior pocket and wear a hat until you get warmed up from being outside.

Don’t walk with your hands in your pocket, though, because that changes your balance. ￭ You also need motivation. That’s where friends can come in. If you’re expected at a certain place at a certain time, or if the walking group shows up at your door to collect you, you’re more likely to go than if you try to motivate yourself. ￭ If you absolutely have no nearby indoor places to walk, ask your library if they have indoor walking exercise videos. You can walk right at home.

Ask your doctor if a 30-minute walk each day would be appropriate for you, or maybe one hour three times a week. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

Police throughout England reported that the country’s car thieves were out in droves. In fact, car owners who popped indoors while their motors

were running to de-ice their windshields were calling in to report car thefts at an alarming rate of one every five minutes. It is difficult, at best, to “hot wire” new cars; you need a key. As one wag put it: “to car thieves, frosty mornings are a Christmas gift.”

Sweet Treats for The Holidays Hurry before the resolutions kick in

By Alison Elsner One of the merriest parts of the holiday season is the abundance of delicious treats. This is also one of the most challenging times of the year for those of us watching our diets and our A1C levels. But, as they say, everything in moderation, which is why we have to take advantage of these fun and festive edible delights while they are here for a limited period of time, usually just through Christmas or New Year’s.

Some of the most visually appealing and creative holiday concoctions show up on the Starbuck’s menu each year. Their frothy, creamy coffee drinks have become cultural staples, immediately signaling in our mind’s eye that it’s time for Christmas carols, gift wrapping and dashing through the snow (not here in the desert, but you get the idea). Favorites include Peppermint Mocha, Caramel Brulée Latte and the new Toasted White Chocolate Mocha…pure liquid decadence, with plenty of fresh whipped cream on top. Also returning for the holidays, the famous coffee company serves up Gingerbread Latte, Eggnog Latte and the low calorie (yes, really) Holiday Spice Flat White.

Chewable options include the colorful Candy Cane Whoopie Pie, Snowman and Polar Bear Cake Pops and the ever-popular Cranberry Bliss Bars, made with a blondie cake base topped with sweet cream cheese icing, tart dried cranberries and white orange drizzle. Research (in my own personal lab) shows that these are delicious and somewhat addictive.

Starbuck’s has locations all over the Coachella Valley, with the newest store in downtown Palm Springs at the Kimpton Rowan Hotel at 100 W. Tahquitz Canyon Way. Other bustling Starbuck’s locations include the ones at 73520 El Paseo in Palm Desert (at San Pablo) and 74600 Deep Canyon (at Highway 111) on the border between Palm Desert and Indian Wells (starbucks.com).

Once your sugar spike subsides, and maybe after a nap, you may want to head over to Trader Joe’s, which has an impressive display of tempting goodies, themed for the holidays. Think about stocking up on some Candy Cane Joe-Joe’s (they’re Oreos with crunchy candy cane bits inside) or Peppermint Joe-Joe’s Ice Cream, cartons of fresh Egg-Nog, Gingerbread Molasses

Cookie Dough and Cranberry Chèvre (yes, goat cheese with cranberry preserves, and yes, it’s real and it’s spectacular).

If you are specifically looking for breakfast ideas, Trader Joe’s also has Peppermint Hot Chocolate, soft baked drizzled Gingerbread Oat Bars, Jumbo Cinnamon Rolls with Vanilla Icing and Winter Wassail, a warm and welcoming beverage that blends apple, black currant and lemon juices infused with holiday spices and orange peel.

And finally, if it’s gifts that you seek, you can never go wrong in picking up a few classic Dark Chocolate Oranges, wrapped in their trademark orange foil, segmented and ready for nibbling. If you’re really going to splurge, keep in mind that The Cheesecake Factory introduces their Peppermint Bark Cheesecake during the holidays. This recipe starts with white chocolate cheesecake swirled with chunks of chocolate peppermint bark, topped with white chocolate mousse

One of the most classic holiday destinations for sweets is See’s Candy, going stronger than ever after 90 years.

Dream Palm Springs Commences Construction with Ceremonial Groundbreaking on Amado Road

169-room hotel to anchor downtown Palm Springs with late 2019 opening.

Developed by Selene International, in partnership with Dream Hotel Group, Dream Palm Springs will be a driving force in the ongoing revitalization of downtown Palm Springs. Located on the corner of Amado Road and Calle Alvarado, adjacent to the Convention Center, the 169-room hotel pairs executive architect Oswaldo D. Give Cookies for Christmas

Freshly baked cookies are a wonderful holiday gift. Hosting family and friends for a cookie exchange party is a great way to start a new holiday tradition and get a variety of baked goods and some new recipes without spending much money. A cookie exchange party also is an inexpensive way to entertain because the cookies provided by your guests are the centerpiece of the party, and everyone leaves with a variety of cookies as a parting gift.

You also can host a cookie bake and exchange party. Since everyone is so busy, buying good quality cookie mixes and having the guests stir them up, bake and decorate them can become a party activity.

The first cookie exchange party started more than 70 years ago. It was usually a social event for women and was extremely popular with women’s clubs and church groups. Each person baked one or two dozen of their favorite cookies and exchanged one with each person in attendance. The party also offered a wonderful way to collect the personal stories behind the cookies. Sharing stories also acts as an ice-breaker and a way for guests to get to know each other.

Here are a few tips for hosting a cookie party exchange, plus a great recipe for my mother’s Peanut Butter Cookies. ￭ Invite eight to 12 people for the

best variety of cookies and conversation. Traditionally, everyone attending brings a dozen of one kind of cookie, squares or candies for each of the other people in attendance, plus one dozen for themselves and an extra dozen for the “sample plate.”

Since this would require a huge amount of baking, I suggest that each person bring three dozen cookies: two dozen to exchange and a dozen for sample plate. Although each guest might not get one of each cookie to take home, this makes the event more of a real party, as your guests won’t feel pressured to turn their kitchens into a bakery. Suggest that they wrap each dozen they are bringing separately. ￭ Send invitations by email or regular mail a few weeks ahead of the party. Specify a start and end time for your party. Send email reminders a week ahead of time. Remind guests

to bring a large container so that they can take their cookie assortment home. ￭ Avoid duplication of cookies/recipes by asking guests to RSVP and tell you about the cookies that they will bring. You might want to suggest selecting a recipe that has a special family meaning or one that is traditional to their background. This is a great way to learn about the traditions and recipes of other cultures and ethnic groups. ￭ Ask each guest to bring a copy of their recipe to pass around with a little information about the origin or memory associated with the cookie.

Having a list of the ingredients also ensures that people with food allergies can protect their health. ￭ If the cookies or candies have been frozen, label them “Previously Frozen.” ￭ Set a beautiful table and arrange all the cookies as the guests arrive. ￭ Create separate sample cookie and exchange cookie areas -- either ends of a table or on separate small tables.

Keep each recipe on its own plate. ￭ Design the table or areas in a layout that provides easy access to the treats from all sides. ￭ Eating sweets induces thirst! Have self-serve pitchers of ice and sparkling water on hand along with warm and cool drinks, cups, plates and napkins.

This is a gathering where you can make your own rules and traditions, like baking these Easy Four-Ingredient Peanut Butter Cookies every year.

Relax, and don’t forget to enjoy your own party!

Easy Four-Ingredient Peanut Butter Cookies ￭ 1 cup sugar, plus 3 tablespoons for sprinkling ￭ 1 cup peanut butter ￭ 1 egg ￭ 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Heat oven to 350 F, and line a large cookie sheet with parchment paper.

In a large bowl, stir all four ingredients together until smooth.

Using a tablespoon measure, scoop out 2 tablespoons of cookie dough and roll into a smooth ball.

Place pre-rolled cookies on your cookie sheet about 1-inch apart. Press down with the back of a fork and then press again from the opposite direction to form a criss-cross pattern.

Bake for 10 minutes, turn cookie sheet and continue baking for another 5 to 10 minutes. Remove from the oven and sprinkle with the remaining sugar.

Cool cookies on sheet pan for 1-2 minutes before moving them to a wire rack to finish cooling. Makes 12-15 cookies.

Store in an air-tight container for up to 3 days.

Van Ert apparently lost track of time when he stopped by a local convenience store in Marshfield, WI. He wound up locked up in the shop’s beer cooler when the store closed around midnight. He was set free the next morning just in time to get picked up by police who locked him up again.

He was charged with not paying for all the beer and malt liquor he consumed in the cooler overnight. He also was charged with violating his parole. Turns out he had a previous arrest and one of the conditions of his parole banned him from consuming alcohol.

Celebrate the Holiday with a Christmas Day Feast at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino

This Christmas Day, the acclaimed chefs at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino will prepare a feast to remember for guests of every age to enjoy. Christmas Dinner will be served all day and will include an array of soups and salads including grilled chicken and shrimp Caesar salad, arugula and baby spinach with strawberries, Baja style shrimp cocktail, wild cream of mushroom soup and seafood jambalaya. Guests can also enjoy succulent meats from the carving station including roast prime rib of beef, honey-Dijon baked Virginia

ham and maple-glazed turkey breast.

Fresh Grill Buffet will also include delectable choices like jumbo shrimp cocktail, Alaskan snow crab legs, Norwegian smoked salmon and poached Canadian mussels. There will be a variety of Chef’s specialties including grilled to order New York strip steaks, baked filet of salmon Florentine with Piccata sauce, roasted leg of lamb stuffed with feta cheese, spinach and roasted red peppers, corn bread stuffing with maple-roasted sausage, and candied sweet potatoes.

Guests will need to save some room for a trip to the extensive dessert bar. There, diners will enjoy Fantasy Springs’ Famous Chocolate Fountain surrounded by a huge selection of cakes and pastries, warm bread pudding, yule logs, bananas Foster, and, of course, Christmas cookies!

The dessert bar will also feature many delicious sugar-free confections.

With large, open seating arrangements, the Fresh Grill Buffet is the perfect place for groups and families, as well as for smaller parties for the Christmas holiday or for any holiday.
