T

he Nutcracker has been a festive holiday favorite for more than 100 years around the world. This year, Pamela Hayes Classical Ballet Company will perform their 17th annual performance of The Nutcracker to keep it alive. The ballet will return to the Harris Center with six shows from Dec. 14 through 17. The Nutcracker tells the story of Drosselmeyer, a mysterious magician and maker of mechanical toys,

who longs to break a curse that has turned his nephew into a nutcracker doll. With the help of a young girl, Clara, they embark on a magical adventure battling the Mouse King and his army and traveling to the far away Kingdom of the Sweets and Land of the Snow. “Our goal is to offer an exceptional production capturing the beauty of the ballet,” said Pamela Hayes, artistic director of the production. “If you already share a love of the arts or have never yet seen a ballet production, I invite you to come see one of our productions and experience local quality ballet. You won’t be disappointed and will be enriched by the experience.” Continued on Page 12

The annual production includes the company’s entire roster along with more than 50 dancers and children. The holiday production will also include a mechanical Christmas tree that grows from 10 to 30 feet, an onstage snowstorm, hundreds of elaborate costumes, including Mother Ginger’s that measures nine-

feet wide and weighs more than 75 pounds. Hayes said guests can look forward to a thoroughly enjoyable performance from beginning to end. She has had guests say that they never expected to have so much fun, she said. “It is a very fun form of live entertainment,” she said. “I have a love of horses, and for the first production, I gave tickets to 10 of my horse friends. They told me they had an absolute great time and they came back the next year.” Hayes said there is something about live performances compared to the movies. “We are so into movies and we think they are the only thing to enjoy, but we need to get more people to go to the theater because there is nothing like it.” She encourages everyone to come out and enjoy a wonderful holiday season tradition with the Pamela Hayes Classical Ballet Company. ✷

street festiVities: Known as Candy Cane lane in december, ledgemont Court in folsom is a popular neighborhood to visit to enjoy holiday decorations.

The weather outside is starting to become slightly more frightful and the scenes are beginning to look delightful for the holiday season in our local region. Last month, the Folsom Lake Entertainer brought you a guide to our area’s most popular tree lightings. This month, we’re bringing you a special guide that will take you where your GPS won’t. We’re setting you on a journey to some of the area’s most popular neighborhoods that are sure to tangle your tinsel with sheer delight. As we give you a brief overview of some the local areas that are known to light up the season, we do recommend planning your journey ahead of time, as driving and reading Folsom’s premier entertainment magazine can cause much distraction, especially with all the sights, lights and delights we have featured this month. In the heart of Folsom, the residents of Ledgemont Court in Lexington Hills have once again made their neighborhood shine. Known as “Candy Cane Lane,” this marks the 25th year these residents have teamed to decorate each of the dozen houses with lights, stand up characters and music. The community is welcome to visit through Christmas. Like many local sites, Ledgemont Court hosts a canned food drive during their display and they encourage others to pitch in and help shine a bright light for our areas less fortunate this holiday season Hildebrand Circle in Folsom brings a touch of Disney to the season annually. This neighborhood is routinely complete with Disney princesses, sparkling carriages along with Mickey, Minnie, Pluto, Goofy, Chip and Dale, Donald, Daisy and the gang. The characters are poised around a 35-foot lighted tree complete with a Mickey Mouse tree topper; and Mickey Mouse lights. Copping Court in Folsom is another hot spot, featuring settings with LED lights on the houses, trees and Snoopy on his dog house. There are 14 miniature Christmas trees lining the driveway of one home; inflatable Santa’s, Frosty the Snowman and more. Don’t miss the large gingerbread house; giant candy canes; candles; deer; net lighting; and one home that offers more than 5,000 lights synchronized to music from 5 to 10 p.m. daily through New Year’s Day. Darvel Court in Folsom has a pair of houses that are elaborate decorators year after year. In the past these homes have been known to utilize heavy equipment to install their lavish decorations. Orange Blossom Circle is another local favorite, featuring a number of handmade decorations.

The Entertainer’s guide to area residential must-see holiday hoods Thorndike Way in Folsom is set to shine bright. Last year one home on this street had 8,000 LED lights alone, all synchronized to music nightly. This display also collects non perishable food for the Twin Lakes Food Bank. More than 8,000 LED lights synchronized to music from 5 to 10 nightly. Accepting canned food items for Twin Lakes Food Bank. The neighboring community of Orangevale has put themselves on the Santa map year after year with two heavily decorated neighborhoods that are popular sights to see. The largest and most well-known area is Dovewood Court. This magical place has been an attraction annually for more than a quarter century. Often packed with visitors, this location offers nearby parking areas, hot cocoa for guests and more. As you walk the court you will often here the oohs and awes of those visiting the court for the first time. This particular display is one that delights generation after generation with parents who visited the street decades ago bringing their young ones to see the sights for the very first time. Regardless if you’re a firsttime visitor or a returning visitor, Dovewood Court is worthy of a year traditional visit. Butterwood Circle in Orangevale is another popular street to visit. Last year this neighborhood featured a life sized gingerbread house with gingerbread character and more.

Holiday lights: Dovewood Court in Orangevale is one of the area’s longest running traditions when it comes to elaborate holiday decorations.

Although it’s a slightly farther trek, we will take you a little bit west to Rancho Cordova for a special area. Lambrusca Drive is known for a glowing display. Among the annual characters is a welcoming baby LED polar bear; multi-colored LED linking; blinking snowmen and reindeer. There’s a laser snowflake show; lit LED deer family and tree. Another home is themed “Santa’s Toyland,” with inflatables, including the Grinch, toy soldiers and more. Neighbors have light displays with synchronized music. While these are just a few well-known areas to visit in the weeks ahead, Folsom and the surrounding communities have many seasonal light shows to visit aside from the residential neighborhoods. The Folsom Zoo is celebrating its seventh year of nightly illuminated tours on select evenings. Global Winter Wonderland has returned to Sacramento for its fourth year. Both of these local venues are featured in this edition of the Folsom Lake Entertainer. ✷

■ Holiday performances

Holiday performers: Masters Singers.

Harris Center fires up an entertainment season Story by Matthew Whitley Photos are Courtesy to the Entertainer

The holiday season is full of family traditions. For many it’s Nana’s homemade pies, or Uncle Ed’s eggnog, spiked with rum, a midnight mass with Mom or hitting the stores on Black Friday at 5 a.m. (my understanding of that scenario has forever eluded me). Holiday music, however, is usually the one I cannot only get behind but look forward to each year. Everyone has their favorites and fortunately the Harris Center here in Folsom takes care of everyone with such a wide variety of musical shows and concerts you’d be hard pressed to choose just one. Holiday Music After kicking off the season in November with “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” and a series of sold-out concerts by Mannheim Steamroller, Harris Center is pulling out all the stops this holiday starting off in December with “Voices of California’s Cool Yule.” Voices is an a cappella male performing ensemble based in Sacramento under the direction of Director Gabe Caretto. Folsom’s premier orchestra, The Folsom Lake Symphony, led by Maestro Peter Jaffe, presents “Deck the Halls.” Classic holiday songs like “Sleigh Ride,” new holiday songs like “Believe,” from the holiday film, “Polar Express,” sing-a-long carols are just some of the material being performed with guest conductor, John Kendall Bailey of the Trinity Lyric Opera and featuring guest performance by tenor Dennis McNeil, the 1993 winner of the Metropolitan Opera Council. Under the musical direction of Lorin Miller, The Placer Pops Chorale, an 80-member choral group accompanied by a professional orchestra presents “Holiday Pops” presenting a selection of holiday favorites and seasonal songs that celebrate a season of joy. Winter Solstice In the classical vein, the Sacramento Baroque Soloists, a professional ensemble who create music from the 17th to 19th centuries present “Winter’s Eve Lady of the Lake,” not a holiday celebration but instead a reminder that “as the days grow shorter, our spirits are drawn to rest and

renewal. … Lady of the Lake’s music recognizes this renewal of the soul and celebrates the fire and life.” This December brings Windham Hill founder and Grammy winner Will Ackerman, accompanied by Grammy-nominated singer, fiddler, pianist Barbara Higbie and Grammy-nominated guitarist and composer, Alex de Grassi present original acoustic music drawn from their multi platinum albums for the Winter Solstice Tour. International Holidays For many children, their first introduction into the world of dance and ballet is Tchaikovsky’s 1892 Russian masterpiece, “The Nutcracker.” It’s Christmas Eve at the Silberhaus’ Christmas party and magic brings life-sized dolls, Sugar Plum Fairies, Mother Ginger and the Land of Sweets. There is a reason this annual favorite is so beloved by families for generations. This production is presented by the Pamela Hales Classical Ballet Theatre in conjunction with Maestro Peter Jaffe and the Folsom Lake Symphony. Posada Navidena, Ballet Folklorico de Sacramento takes the audience on a journey through regions of Mexico with this traditional Mexican folk dance company that present a festive piñata scene, a visit from the Three Wise Men, traditional Mexican holiday songs, villancicos, Christmas processional, posada, and beautiful choreography. Back by popular demand is “An Irish Christmas.” Led by award-winning dancers and performers and as seen on PBS, the beloved Irish Christmas show presents Irish classics, as well as, contemporary holiday songs and performing classic Irish dances like the shoemaker, the butter churn with traditional Irish instruments and classic dance. Vocal Performances Holiday Celebration presented by High Voltage, the premier performing group of El Dorado Musical Theatre, consists of 20 young performers performing new and classic holiday favorites. (Please note this is a sign interpreted performance.) For a more intimate holiday show, A Master Singers Christmas, present a choral concert of more traditional nature. Led by conductor Ralph Hughes, the Sacramento Master Singers, a group of singers from the greater Sacramento area who are dedicated to the advancement of choral music, bring to the Harris exuberant spirituals, multicultural repertoire, timeless carols including “Ave Maria” and Sir James MacMillan’s 17-part antiphonal work, “And Lo, the Angel of the Lord” and the exuberant African chant piece, “Noel!” And finally, ending the month is multi-platinum, best-selling composer and recording artist, Jim Brickman. Brickman’s show, “A Joyful Christmas 2017,” will draw from several of the singers holiday albums, including, his most recent, “A Joyful Christmas,” and many of the singers huge hits including “Never Alone with Lady Antebellum,” “Valentine,” with Martina McBride and “Sending You A Little Christmas.” Brickman has earned 21 No. 1 albums, 32 top radio singles, has had multiple TV specials and host the popular radio show, “The Jim Brickman Show.” The Harris Center is located at 10 College Parkway in Folsom, for tickets and information, visit harriscenter.net.✷

Road less traveled By Erik Loigom

Living in Amador County I have become a big fan of Amador County wines especially Barbera which is a varietal that is not widely grown in Australia. Most visitors to the Shenandoah Valley focus on the wineries on Shenandoah Road and Shenandoah School Road. The road less travelled is the Steiner Road which loops off Shenandoah Road. There are nine wineries well worth a visit providing excellent wines and great experiences. Dillian Winery: Owner Tom Dillian has been growing high-quality grapes in Amador County since 1972. The winery tasting room is modeled after the home built by Tom’s grandfather in the early 1900s, sits on property owned by the Dillians since 1917. To quote Mike Dunne, Wine Writer, Sac Bee: on his visit to the Barbera Festival: “The overall standout of the day to this palate was the Dillian Wines 2015 Amador County Barbera.” Just of Steiner Road is the Bella Grace property. Well worth a visit for their exceptional wines, the view and a tour of their wine cave. Renwood Winery: A beautiful facility not just offering great wines but an ideal setting to enjoy their gourmet selections from their deli. Deaver Vineyards: where grape growing has been a family tradition for over 150 years. Besides offering many different varietals they have a large selection of ports to choose from. Shenandoah Vineyards: The sister property of Sobon Estate. You can visit their art gallery while enjoying a glass of their lovely wine. Iron Hub Winery (formally Amador Foothill Vineyards): Nestled on a hilltop their new tasting room has the prettiest view of the surrounding valley and mountains. Winemaker and owner Tom Jones employs a handcrafted vineyard-to-bottle winemaking approach, resulting in balanced, complex wines showcasing distinctive characteristics of the estate. Dobra Zemlja (meaning “good Earth” in Croatian) promises big, hearty, unfiltered wines that pack a punch. Driven Cellars: worth the visit not just for the wine but if you a car buff there is an excellent collection of many antique cars, trucks and tractors. The collection has to be one of the most unique in Northern California with vehicles spanning numerous auto makers and their makes and models. Charles Spinetta Winery: Their family have farmed in Amador County since 1852. Besides their wines, they proudly showcase 450 framed pieces of art and sculptures in their wildlife art gallery. The Steiner Road vintners host an annual event every year, the dates for the 2018 have not yet to be released. For further information on Amador county wine events can be found at amadorwine.com. Erik Loigom is the owner of UnWined in Folsom. He can be reached at 916-357-5500.

A world of wonder and illumination Global Wonderland lights up Cal Expo for fourth straight year By Bill sullivan | Photos are courtesy to the entertainer Global Winter Wonderland has returned to Sacramento for a fourth season. The magical world of light spanning 17 acres at Cal Expo will unveil many favorite and new attractions, including massive illuminated lanterns, thrilling rides, an ice skating rink, entertainers, interactive holiday activities and more daring acts. Organizer Joanna Ricken said many of the giant Chinese lanterns are new for 2017 and there will be more circus acts within the presentations that span the grounds with a new theme “Holidays Around the World.” “We have our circus of light returning four times a night and that’s free with admission, we have a lot of fire acts, contortionists and a lot of juggling,” said organizer Joanna Ricken. 22 | Folsom Lake Entertainer

Global Winter Wonderland offers eye-opening attractions for all ages, including a Craft Center to inspire magical moments for children of all ages. The Craft Center will feature a variety of DIY stations where visitors can create their own ornaments, decorate lanterns or write a letter to Santa Claus. Children can also take their annual photo with Santa at Global Winter Wonderland and the Holiday Ice Rink will return for guests who wish to add an evening on the ice to their holiday experience. “Our experience in Sacramento has been so wonderful that we decided to stay for a fourth year to create a holiday tradition that local families look forward to,” said Lulu Huang, event founder. “Global Winter Wonderland offers hands-on activities to make the experience even more memorable for our guests.” Out on the grounds, guests will enjoy a totally new experience as they take in iconic scenes from Toyland, Candyland, the North Pole and iconic illuminated scenes from around the world. All of the illuminated lanterns are hand-crafted in silk When: December 1-3, 8-10, 15-16 and and steel by talented artisans. Dec. 22-Jan. 7 Constructing the lanterns is a detailed process. It Where: Cal Expo, 1600 Exposition Blvd., Sacramento begins with an in-house design team. They create Tickets and information: illustrations of the lanterns seven to nine months 510-962-8586 in advance of opening day. Artisans and engineers review the concepts, tweaking throughout the process, until a construction plan is finalized. As construction begins, electricians and engineers walk the area and talk about how to maximize the beauty of each lantern. It takes a team of five people including a designer, welder, electrician, silk installer and painter, to construct one lantern. The larger displays, up to 60-feet tall, require a team of 15 to 20. “For more than 160 years the grounds of the State Fair have provided a constant setting for celebrating and showcasing the best of California, and we welcome Global Winter Wonderland as they present a portion of California’s rich artistry and diversity,” said Rick

Pickering, CEO of the California Exposition and State Fair. “In our efforts to help build a stronger regional community, we are very pleased that Global Winter Wonderland has returned to Cal Expo this winter.” Global Winter Wonderland creates nearly 100 local jobs at Cal Expo during the holiday season to staff the theme park from November to January. International Culture Exchange Group (ICEG), the producer of Global Winter Wonderland, was founded by President Lulu Huang to create a multi-cultural festival in the United States. ICEG is the first company in history to bring lanterns to the U.S., making Global Winter Wonderland the first and largest lantern festival outside of China. It is a rich tradition that dates back more than two thousand years. For more information on Global Winter Wonderland and ICEG, visit www.globalwonderland.com. ✷ 24 | Folsom Lake Entertainer

Story and photos by Bill Sullivan They were the side dish we all grew up loving, perhaps the highlight of our school lunches. Napoleon Dynamite brought them to fame on the big screen. Now, Historic Folsom is looking to put themselves on the map when it comes to tasty Tots, with the first ever Tots for Toys Tater Tot Crawl. You have heard of beer crawls, wine tasting and such but a Tot crawl is something you may not of heard of before and that’s all the more reason to visit Historic Folsom on Dec. 9 from noon until 9 p.m. Not only will you have the opportunity to taste a variety of tasty Tots, you can do it for a good cause. Bring one unwrapped new toy to any of the participating locations for a complimentary serving of Tots. If you bring six toys, you can taste at six different Tot-toting location. The Tots for Toys event is the brainchild of Brian Knadle, owner of Marly & Moo Restaurant on Sutter Street. It was Knadle who brought up the idea of a Tater Tot crawl at a merchant meeting. Immediately, several other restaurants loved the idea and jumped on board. They decided to turn it into a toy drive. Matt Garrido from Heckle Alehouse joined the effort and came up with the name Tots for Toys. Sponsored by the Folsom Historic District Association and the Folsom Telegraph along with the participating merchants, the event is sure to be a hit. “This is a fun way to taste the different styles of When: Noon - 9 p.m. Dec. 9 Tater Tots we have here Where: Folsom Historic District in the district,” said Judy Collinsworth, executive firector of the Folsom Historic District. “This is something fun and very unique, we hope it will grow.” Six different locations have signed up to be official participants in the inaugural event. They include Marly & Moo, Heckle Alehouse, Samuel Hornes Tavern, Fat Rabbit, Hacienda del Rio and finish off with dessert Tots at Snook’s Chocolate Factory. That’s right, chocolate covered Tots are a thing! There will be a toy drop-off barrel at each location listed. One toy donation is requested for every free tater tot serving. The procedure will be simple at each location, donate a toy get your Tots. It’s an event that Napoleon would die for. ✷

Salsa’s Taqueria offers authentic Mexican food dishes Folsom just got what it was missing — Salsa’s Taqueria. This delicious and authentic Mexican restaurant recently opened in early October and has been thriving since. Owners Alex and Elisa Salais started the business after Elisa worked many years as a restaurant manager. “When the opportunity came, I thought it was the best thing for her,” Alex said. “This is her career. She had all the experience, and she loves doing it.” Alex is a 13-year police officer in Stockton, but when he finishes his shift, his new boss is his wife. Continued on Page 30

through Thursdays and 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays Where: 1760 Prairie City Road, Suite. 130, Folsom

When the family was deciding on what to name the restaurant, Alex’s brother offered Salsa’s as the idea, as they have a wide variety of different salsas. With those salsas, you need food to put it in, and they have more than anyone could ask for. The menu ranges all over the board from tacos and burritos to entrée plates with seafood. “Pretty much, if you thought about it, we have it,” Alex said. “We offer vegetarian options with tacos and burritos, as well as a vegan-style burrito.” The vegan burrito is named Silky, after a family friend who has been extremely supportive of the business, who also happens to be vegan. When you walk in Salsa’s, ordering may seen overwhelming with an extensive menu, but employees at the counter are there to help with any questions you may have. You order at the counter, take a number, and find a seat. Complimentary chips and salsa are available, as well as fountain drinks for purchase. Alex said his favorite part of the business experience has been all of the welcoming customers.

They have been very nice and very polite. They’re patient and understand when we’re busy,” he said. “We had a family here in Folsom that bought my wife some flowers welcoming her to the neighborhood, so that was a very nice gesture.” Alex said the response so far from customers has been extremely positive with compliments and five-star reviews on Yelp. “They really love it. I have been told that they can tell the difference from Mexican food around here in Folsom and ours,” Alex said. “One thing that is unique is that we make everything fresh here. We make things here daily and when you taste the food, you can really tell.” Alex mentioned at Salsa’s they marinate all their meats in house and make their own chorizo. The new family-owned restaurant has happy hour from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. every day with $1.50 tacos, 15 percent off nachos, $3 draft and bottled beers and more. Employees of Intel, Sutter Health and Dignity Health will receive a complimentary fountain drink during day-time hours with their badge. Breakfast is served all day long, which is something you don’t come by often in the area. ✷

New brewery to roll in town Brewmeister: Erik Schmid is the co-owner of Red Bus Brewing Company, which is is expected to open in Folsom in early 2018.

Red Bus will be a 7-barrel brewery and tasting room By Rachel Zirin | Photos By Bill sullivan There hasn’t been a production brewery located in Folsom for a number of decades, but projected for early 2018, Red Bus Brewing Company is riding into town and opening up their doors to the community. Owner Erik Schmid is also the owner of the Brewmeister, a homebrew shop located at 802 Reading St., but his dream has always been to own a brewery, he said. Schmid originally was looking for a creative way to transport people from the parking garage and Sutter Street up a couple blocks to the brewery. He said he looked around until he came across an old red VW bus and thought, “What could be cooler than that?” When he consulted with his insurance agent, he was shut down. The long-time Folsom resident said he looked at different historical Folsom-type names for the brewery, but he loved the van so much that he decided to name it after that. Red Bus Brewing Company will be a seven-barrel production brewery and tasting room. Schmid said he will be keeping the homebrew shop for those who also want to grab a beer while they shop. The beer Schmid and his co-brewer Nik Stevens plan to brew will be rotating.

“We’ll do some IPAs — what the public wants, but that’s not necessarily what I and Nik want,” he said. “We’re much more European/German kind of guys. We’ll have a kÖlsch, pilsner, and of course we’ll have an English-style porter and stouts.” Schmid said with a seven-barrel system, which is relatively small, they won’t be brewing large batches. “You’ll see different things on tap all the time,” he said. “I’ll go from what we feel like brewing to what we think people want to see. You will also see some consistency on tap for those popular beers.” Something unique that Schmid plans to incorporate in the future is brewing with an open book. “If you come in, we’ll be able to tell you exactly what is in the beer, or we will publish a version that is close to the recipe and add it in the homebrew kits,” he said. Schmid said the entire area will be licensed so people will be able to walk around and sit near the tanks, as well as hang at the tasting bar. “During busier times, there will be seating in the warehouse. It is a cool factor to be able to sit next to the tanks. People dig that,” he said. “I’m looking forward to the reaction from people and to see how they like it. We’re looking to be a small boutique neighborhood-type brewery. We’re not looking to be the next big thing.” Hours are not set in stone, but construction has begun. For more information, go to RedBusBrew.com or RedBusBrew on Facebook and Instagram. “If I were looking to do this anywhere else, I would have to take a harder look because there are so many breweries everywhere,” he said. “The fact that there hasn’t been a production brewery in Folsom since the late 1880s made Folsom very attractive.” ✷

Historic Folsom has it goin’ on Ice rink opens and tots for toys among holiday events

By Dahlynn Mckowen, Folsom Historic District | photo by Bill Sullivan First and foremost, it is here. AT LAST! The ice rink has opened. Although the ice rink has been in the same location the past six years, the operations have had its share of hiccups in getting up and running this year. But, if nothing else, it has shown us how much our community loves the ice rink. With daily calls and inquiries, it’s the most anticipated holiday event of the year — and I say with confidence, it is finally here! So grab the kids or your parents and come on out for a brisk ice skating session. If you see a snow flake in the window of any business in the historic district, that means if you are wearing a wrist band from ice skating you will receive a special discount at that store. Another fun reason to get on the ice. On Saturday, Nov. 25 our merchants in historic Folsom rolled out their blue doormats and welcomed you into their stores for the holiest of all retail holidays: Small Business Saturday. This is a day that says, You matter. Small is BIG. We love you here. Amazon is fine, but if you like to look, touch, smell or try on before you buy, then Historic Folsom is the place for you. Engage with our shopkeepers. They are here for you. Join us in the district and shop small. Dec. 1 was the annual lighting of the Christmas tree. Again this year, the tree was craned into the center of the ice rink. We were excited to have had performances by local choirs, bands and dance groups up and down the Historic District. Some performances were located in parking lots, others on balconies and others at the amphitheater. Dec. 2 marks our 50th annual Christmas Crafts Fair here on Sutter Street from 6 to 9 pm. That’s right. 50 years. We will be

celebrating this milestone with live music on each block, food and some of the craftiest crafters in the region. These folks were handpicked to be in our show. Come on out and shop for that special person. You’ll find one of a kind, beautiful artisan gifts, just in time for the holidays. Free to attend. Rain or shine. On Dec. 4 the Budweiser Clydesdale Team will be here on Sutter Street delivering beer to all their restaurants. Come on out from 5 to 7 p.m. to see them in action. Dec. 8 and 9 you can visit 10 historic places here in the district that are all decked out for the holidays. Tickets can be purchased at folsomhistoricalsociety.org On Dec. 9, six of our creative and fun restaurants here in the district are hosting Tots for Toys. Yes, you heard correctly. Tots are all the rage, so bring an unwrapped toy or two or six and visit our participating restaurants. The Tater Tot Crawl runs from noon to 9 p.m. Toys for Tots barrels at each location: Marly & Moo, Heckle Alehouse, Samuel Hornes Tavern, Hacienda del Oro and Fat Rabbit. Snook’s Chocolate Factory has created a special dessert tot for the occasion. One free serving of tots for each unwrapped toy donation for Toys for Tots. More at historicfolsom. org or 916-985-7452. Rain or shine. If all those great events aren’t enough to get you down here to the district, then here are a few more things to consider: dining, night life, unique boutiques, art galleries, wine tasting, and live theater. From Dec. 1 to 23 “Holiday in the Hills” is performed at our very own Sutter Street Theatre. Contact sutterstreettheather.com for times and tickets. December 2017 | 35

■ Folsom Zoo

Christmas in season at Folsom Zoo By Bill sullvian | Photos Courtesy Lesley Miller For a series of evenings throughout December, Folsom offers the opportunity to celebrate the holiday in its wildest way. The Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary will be hosting The Magic of Wild Nights and Holiday Lights from 5 to 8 p.m. on Dec. 1, 2, 8, 9, and 15 through 30. This magical event invites all ages to bring friends and family to experience the zoo after dark. “This is a special opportunity to see the animals that normally sleep during the day,” said Jocelyn Smeltzer, the zoo supervisor. “The animals really enjoy this event, especially the owls.” With more than 100 trees covered in thousands of colorful LED lights around the zoo, there will be carolers and seasonal refreshments. In addition there will be an appearance not only from Santa Claus, but Santa “Paws,” the bear, she said. “Over the course of the 12 nights, we have around 5,000 guests,” Smeltzer said. “I recommend people to come earlier than closer to Christmas because it gets pretty busy.”

Now it is time for the main event, the entrée. This recipe is in two parts. Part one is how to prepare the Cornish Game Hens and part two is the Cranberry Apple Sage Sausage Stuffing … phew that is a mouthful, pun intended. The stuffing can be placed in a roasted chicken or turkey as well. Even duck would work, but for this particular dinner Cornish Game Hens seamed ideal. Christmas dinner will never be the same.

Stuffed Cornish Game Hens & Cranberry Apple Sage Sausage Stuffing

Stuffing Recipe: Serves 4-8 12 cups day-old, gluten-free white bread, diced 2 stalks of celery, halved lengthwise and sliced 1 yellow onion, diced 1 ½ cups fresh whole cranberries 1 cup diced apple 2 tablespoons fresh sage leaves, chopped 1 tablespoon thyme 1 tablespoon rosemary 2 eggs, beaten ¼ pound spicy Italian sausage 1 cup unsalted butter 2 ½ cups chicken bone broth Salt and pepper to taste 2 tablsepoons coconut oil Instructions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray a 9-by-13-inch baking dish with 1 tablespoon coconut oil. In a large skillet on the stove, melt butter over medium heat. Once melted add onion and celery. Cook until soft. In a large mixing bowl combine bread, apples, cranberries, cooked onion and celery and herbs. In the same large skilled add remaining tablespoon coconut oil until melted. Cook sausage in skillet until done. Add to the bowl of ingredients.

Add half the allotted amount of chicken broth and stir until combined. Pour beaten eggs into mixing bowl and combine. Add remaining broth into the bread mixture. *Bread should be moist, but not soggy. Salt and pepper to taste. Place stuffing into greased baking dish and cover with foil. Bake for 30 minutes covered and 15 minutes uncovered. Allow to cool for at least 5 minutes, serve and enjoy! Cornish Game Hen: Serves 2-4 2, 1½ pound Cornish hens 1 tablespoon rosemary 2 cloves of garlic, minced 2 tablespoons olive oil 4 tablespoons butter Salt and pepper to taste Kitchen twine Instructions: Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Rinse hens in cold water inside and out and pat dry. Season well with salt and pepper on both inside and outside. *If desired fill cavity with uncooked stuffing and tie off the legs. If not stuff with lemon and garlic as desired. Place in a large cast iron skillet Drizzle with olive oil and rub over hens Cut the butter into small pieces and lay on top of the hens. Place in oven for 1 hour. Skin will turn golden and crispy with an internal temperature of 180 degrees. Remove from oven and let rest for 5 minutes before carving. Run drippings over the top. Serve and enjoy.

Tis’ the season to be jolly, and what makes anyone more merry than being surrounded by loved ones at a table brimming with hearty food? This month’s food column has a sequence. Let’s go on a journey from cocktail hour to dessert with apple as the theme ingredient. The versatility of apple can take you from sweet to savory in a matter of a few key steps. Set this Christmas celebration apart with these dishes that will have your family and loved ones gleeful for more. Paid Advertisement

a perfeCt wine Country stop for tHe Holidays By Michele sMith | Photos aRe sPecial to the enteRtaineR One thing any visitor can notice upon their first arrival at 24 Brix, is a cozy, romantic tasting room covered in white lights. We are not sure if this is the norm, but when you want to think about a fun festive atmosphere, the tasting room certainly exemplifies this to say the least. What can a visitor expect from 24 Brix wine? First, not only is the customer service compared at a Nordstrom’s high standard level, a unique educational aspect is that this is a family-owned winery that focuses on sustainability. As most Californians are aware of the green industry, when the green movement comes to a winery standard, for this winery; the translation means the grapes are grown without artificial fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides. This wine tasting locale is a great stop on your way into the Shenandoah Valley, located on the corner of Highway 49 and Shenandoah Road. The tasting room is great, both for those who are very familiar with Amador wine country and newbies alike. Why? The location serves as a home to wineries that do not have tasting rooms of their own – Fiddletown Cellars, Fate Wines and Los Portales, to name just a few. In addition, visitors can expect to find Amador wines that wine tasters will not find at other locations and even offers a selection of wines that are made from Amador grapes that are not available for purchase locally. There is an added bonus for wine county visitors who love to shop, as Amador 360 offers local honey, lavender products and even crafts from where: 18590 Highway 49, in local artists. While these items are not available online, the sampler Plymouth. packs are a highlight and are available for purchase both online, and contact: 209-245-6600 or visit: in person at the tasting room. The current sampler pack offerings (a www.amador360.com. six-pack mix of various wines) include Brian’s Picks, Great Gifts, Perfect Pairings and the Zinfandel pack. Amador 360 also offers great discounts (10 percent of the purchase of six wines and 15 percent off 12 bottles or more) and wine club members even receive additional discounts. The club members receive a quarterly shipment of three wines from wineries that most Amador wine tasters are not familiar with, receive 15 percent of retail prices on club wines, as well as wines that are offered in the tasting room, and a huge 20 percent off when they purchase 12 of more bottles. You can even sign up for a membership online. With the holiday season coming up, this is a great place to visit and purchase a gift for the seasoned Amador County wine taster who wants to try something that is off the radar due to a lack of a tasting room. The tasting room website is also a great resource for those looking to taste in the area and showcases the 40 wineries that are in the area, including wineries at that are off the beaten path, such as downtown Main Street and Ridge Road. As most visitors the area know Amador County is known for their famous Zinfandels with over 2,000 acres in vineyards, but in recent years, the area has been known for Italian varietals, such as Barbera and Sangiovese wines. ✷

‘An Irish Christmas’ returns to folsom

Bridging the traditional with the modern, it’s all about the journey for these artists By Matthew Whitley | photo courtesy to the Entertainer “Without doubt, Folsom audiences — Folsom and Harris Center would be No. 1. We love, love, love Folsom!” With a rich Irish accent, Margaret O’Carroll, is exclaiming her love of Folsom to me as I catch up with her via phone in the L.A. office of her company, Kerry Irish Productions, which promotes and celebrates Irish culture through dance, song, storytelling throughout America. “We have a history there — everyone is so kind and wonderful and real. I don’t know what the air is up there but it is among all of the theaters nationwide with doubt, my team would say Folsom is No. 1 on our list. There’s a certain laid-back attitude but it’s not laid back. Audiences just flow in, we love them … the welcome mat is always wide open for us there. Folsom got it right, what can I say?” O’Carroll said. 48 | Folsom Lake Entertainer

The Riverdance Phenomenon “You know the commonality is like some common ground, and they’re all the bridges,” O’Carroll said. “We’re no different really — everywhere has the traditions we have — somehow the Irish tradition is so popular now. I’m not sure why it’s head and shoulders over many other traditions but I just think we’ve been at it for such a long time and without shadow of doubt in most recent times, from the dance point of view Riverdance triggered just such an explosion, as I said, that we’re still dealing with it. It brought Irish dance into a beautiful legitimate professional place.” The appeal of the Irish music and song and dance is still huge even years after the Michael Flatly phenomenon took over PBS screens for years. The simple fact remains — it’s a beautiful thing to watch these amazing dancers and singers perform. “I think it’s been growing for hundreds of When: 11 a.m., 2 and 7 p.m. Dec. 23 years, to be frank, and it Where: Harris Center for the Arts just hit with the trigger at Folsom Lake College, 10 College that was Riverdance; Parkway, Folsom Needless to mention tickets: $23-$43; Premium $48, nobody expected that,” Children & Students with ID $18 contact: HarrisCenter.net O’Carroll said. “And I think once that hit, it’s just the explosion that happened. It was just coming along for a long time. We are music makers, you know, we think musically and we think our language is a beautiful, musical language. The music of Ireland is we play music, we sing, we tell stories. We’re just that kind of people and to this day and we’re creating. There’s a whole new breed coming up but continue that tradition… I think it’s just in our genes, you know, and I think the commonality of folk traditions,” she said. This exquisite production in fact features Scott Doherty, who made his professional debut with Riverdance in 2009, and also Michael Flatly’s Lord of the Dance. Another lead dancer, Tyler Schwartz, is a champion dancer, taking the all-Ireland, all-Scotland, all-British and North American championships. Nevertheless, at three shows in one day in Folsom the dancers will definitively be icing down their feet between shows! With a show steeped in tradition, what is the future of Irish dancing when there’s a younger generation growing up with electronic dance music and hip-hop? “Well, from my specific point of view, I always say that we are modern minds interpreting older things and out of that — that is the continuum — what happened before, everywhere we look is happening today but with new thinking behind it, new creativity, new minds, new focus, new chances that are taken,” O’Carroll said. An Irish Christmas with its mix of the traditional to the eclectic features a fantastic cast of singers and dancers who bring real charm and magic to the holidays. According to O’Carroll, what’s really special about folk theatre is that it protects, interprets, and narrates the heartbeat of a culture and carries those stories to the next generation, with An Irish Christmas, it just does so in a beautiful night of entertainment. ✷

An Irish Christmas

Folsom is the final stop on an exhaustive tour of 27 shows, in 23 cities in 29 days by these internationally renowned dancers and performers. Conceived, produced and directed by O’Carroll, “An Irish Christmas” has become a yearly tradition since the Harris Center first opened. In the show, singers and dancers celebrate the holidays with Christmas music, traditional Irish dance, traditional Irish musical instrumentation and celebrate a rich series of Irish traditions including the fireworks dance, butter making dance, straw boys (men disguised in straw hats), Sean Nos Dance, Dancing on the half door, and the North Kerry Blackbird, oldest known solo Irish dance.

The National Tour of ‘Motown: The Musical’ coming to Folsom By Bill sullivan | photo courtesy to the Entertainer The iconic sounds and the story of Motown are set to dance their way into Folsom to ring in the new year as the National Tour of Motown: The Musical is slated to appear at the Harris Center for the Arts Jan. 5 through 7, 2018. Motown: The Musical is a jukebox musical that premiered on Broadway in April 2013. The musical is based on Berry Gordy’s autobiography “To Be Loved: The Music, the Magic, the Memories of Motown.” The story focuses on the history of his founding and running of the Motown record label, and his personal and professional relationships with Motown artists such as Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, and Michael Jackson. The production’s music and lyrics are taken from selections from the Motown catalog. During its run, Motown received four nominations at the 67th Tony awards. The musical finished its original Broadway run on Jan. 18, 2015, closing after 37 previews and 738 regular performances. A When: 7:30 p.m. Jan 5; 2 and 7:30 p.m. national tour began in April 2014, featuring Jan 6; 1 and 6:30 p.m. Jan 7 Clifton Oliver and Allison Semmes. The WHere: Harris Center, 10 College show returned to Broadway in 2016 for an Parkway, Folsom 18-week run. However, the run closed earTickets: harriscenter.net lier than expected in July of the same year. After speculation that a London production would be staged in the Dominion Theatre, which will be refurbished after “We Will Rock You” closes, West End productions announced in May 2015 for the Shaftesbury Theatre, to begin on Feb. 11, 2016. The show is currently running through January of 2019 and the Harris Center for the Arts has been fortunate enough to book five showings. The West End production is directed by Charles Randolph-Wright, who also directed this musical on Broadway and its U.S. tour. The cast reportedly stars Cedric Neal, Lucy St. Louis Sifiso Mazibuko and Obioma Ugoala. Set n 1983, recording stars are gathered at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, to celebrate Motown Records’ 25th anniversary. In a flashback, a young Berry Gordy watches the neighbors dancing in Detroit. In 1957, the adult Berry forms his own record label, and begins to make lifelong friends with recording artists/singers such as Marvin Gaye and Smokey Robinson. Berry discovers the Supremes and Diana Ross, among many others. The recording stars sing their popular numbers, including: Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, The Supremes, The Miracles, The Marvelettes, Mary Wells, The Temptations, Martha and the Vandellas, The Contours and The Jackson 5. Don’t miss this iconic Broadway musical that celebrates the music that transformed America. ✷

A joyful Christmas concert with

Jim Brickman

One of pop music’s most popular instrumentalists and performers brings his holiday show to Harris Center By Matthew Whitley | photo courtesy to the Entertainer Known and loved for his romantic and beautiful pop compositions, duets with some of the hottest names in music, including Johnny Mathis, Olivia Newton-John, Martina McBride and Lady Antebellum, Jim Brickman is one of the most successful musicians in pop music today. Making his debut in 1994, with the album, “No Words,” Brickman has over the last 20 plus years, earned himself 21 No. 1 albums, 32 top 20 radio singles, two Grammy nominations, the gospel music Dove award, and a Canadian 52 | Folsom Lake Entertainer

Country Music award and this is in addition, to his popular radio show, TV concert specials, and best-selling books. The Ohio native is a busy man. Brickman has created a distinctive piano style and over the last two decades and 30-plus albums has changed the popularity and perception of instrumental music in America, garnering multiple gold and platinum albums. Brickman’s most recent albums include Pure Cinema and his newest, “A Joyful Christmas” with the accompanying TV special featuring Jane Lynch, and Dick Van Dyke and his newest holiday single, “Christmas Where You Are” performed with the band, Five For Fighting. I caught up with Jim Brickman who is currently on tour and headed to Folsom for a holiday concert to discuss his career, music and our mutual adoration of Olivia Newton-John.

What do you who are your favorite songwriters and who what songwriters inspired you the most to write? Primarily, Carole King in a major way, Burt Bacharach, Cole Porter, George Gershwin but for pop music: Paul Simon, Simon and Garfunkel, some Beatles but mostly I would say top songwriters like, you know Joni Mitchell, a little bit of Carly Simon, some of these ‘70s singer songwriters primarily Paul Williams. Pop-song writers who write great hooks and who are and take in their songwriting have an appeal that is not a stretch to enjoy them or to listen to them. You have done a number of high-profile duets, including Olivia Newton John, Carly Simon, Martina McBride. When you are writing a song do you know in advance who you’re writing for or do you come up with a song and then manipulate it to accommodate a singer that you bring in for the piece? Yeah, I mean it’s actually pretty even on both. If there’s somebody that I want to work with — like I had wanted to do a song with Kenny Rogers because I felt like a lot of the chances that I get to work with iconic sinners is rare and you know, in all fairness, you don’t really know how long they’re going to sound like Kenny Rodgers that sort of thing. And so if I do that a lot of times I think about, “Oh I would love to work with him. He would be great on a Christmas song, I’m going to send him a couple ideas of things that I think would sound great and invite him to

sing.” Other times, like I have a brand new album where I wrote, I co-wrote a song with Five for Fighting and (band creator) John Ondrasik III and so then that naturally grows out of the fact that we wrote it together and so Five for Fighting sings it, so it’s a natural progression. So sometimes it’s somebody that I want to work with and then sometimes it grows out of a bit I do hear in my head that I think would be great for this … so it’s about half and half depending on what the opportunity is. Who was your favorite person to sing with where you found yourself saying, ‘I can’t believe I’m performing with this person’? Well, early on the way that I met Olivia Newton- John was that I was put on her tour. So it was a natural like it was a co-bill with her. So the relationship grew out of a natural situation of us being together. Then we started writing together and getting to know each other. When that first happened to me and things that happened at first there’s kind of a feeling like ,”How did this happen? It’s crazy!” I mean I had her totally hot poster on my wall. Most recently, I mean the people that I admire or I’ve admired now life — like when I did a song with Johnny Mathis — that was amazing. He’s so iconic. … and it’s not it’s not necessarily limited to like singers sometimes it’s just the chance to be able to work with people that I have admired or that I look up to. Usually the icons are the people that I feel like the most appreciative of working with because of their legacy and what I learn from them.

Is there a dream duet? This week it’s Dolly Parton. I had her on my radio show … and I told her that the only reason I did the duet with Kenny Rogers was to be one degree of separation from her! It’s not so much that I just want to work with this person, it’s more like there has to be a fit or a reason to do it not just to cast them in a role. What is the best piece of musical advice you ever got? The sounds are as important as the silences. In other words, don’t overplay — give the music a chance to be so that people can take it in. That constant sound it does make an emotional connection so in order to have really beautiful music you have to have the right moments of silence with sound. Have you ever thought about writing a Broadway musical? I have yes. I’m sort of discussing a couple of those things right now both one with my music and one where I would be writing to an existing book; so there’s a lot of that conversation in my future. What can people expect or plan on seeing at your concert at The Harris Center? So it’s hits and holiday. Because I always think it’s important to play some of the hits that people like. I mean if you’re lucky enough to have hits you should play them. I’m bringing a male vocalist named John Trones who was with me, I think the last time, [he’s a] Broadway singer and it’s a very intimate, happy, funny — you know, lots of interaction. I always feel like it’s important to have a conversation. I’m not performing at people, it’s a shared experience and so, I think it’s always very light-hearted but also emotional and a real great escape — some love songs, some hits, a couple covers and some of the holiday songs with sort of the New Years twist to it. ✷

Holiday time is fun time

Happy holidays! Merry Christmas! Feliz Navidad! Mele Kalikimaka! Buon Natale! Fröhliche Weihnachten! Joyeux Noël! Karisama te nawām sāla khušayāmwālā hewe! 圣诞节快乐 — shèng dàn jié kuài lè! Any way you say it, I wish you the best holiday season for you, your family and your loved ones. Holiday time is busy time. It’s fun and stressful. How do you get everything done? My clients receive my video e-mail with some “home hacks” ideas to help them save time, stay organized and reduce stress during these busy holiday times. If you want my list or have some ideas that you find help you get more done during the holiday season, please contact me. It’s fun to hear more ideas. Then we’ll have more time to do the fun and memorable experiences in the holiday season. Here’s a top 10 list of ideas of fun things to do right here in our own area during the season. I’ll bet you can think of another 10 things to do. 10. Contribute a new or lightly used coat or blanket to my One Warm Coat program. Contact me for collection box locations. Rolling Hills Church is the recipient of donations. 9. Take a carriage ride at Town Center in El Dorado Hills (benefitting Hands4Hope and 3Strands Global). 8. Run in the Folsom Christmas Classic 5k or 10k to support wonderful cause; child cancer awareness. 7. Attend the tree lighting ceremony at Town Center in El Dorado Hills. Grab a hot chocolate. 6. Visit a Christmas tree farm and find the perfect tree for your home. Get two. 5. Join in at the El Dorado Hills 54th annual Santa Run presented by the El Dorado Hills Fire Department. I think my kids did this about 12 times. Remember to bring a donation; canned food or unwrapped toy. 4. Attend “The Nutcracker.” It’s at the Harris Center for the Arts in Folsom and Sacramento Community Center Theater. 3. Skate at the outdoor ice rink. Make it a family day or invite five of your best friends. 2. Take a photo with Santa. Have a goofy smile. Do a group photo. Bring your favorite pet, as long as it’s smaller than a camel. And the No. 1 thing to do this holiday season … drum roll please … Buy a new home! Put a big giant bow on it and be sure

Santa has a forwarding address. Nothing says Christmas than a truck full of boxes of your belongings headed down the road. Seriously, holiday time really is a great time to buy a home. If someone has to move, the holiday season is a time where they may be able to find time to go house-hunt and get it done. But before you get that big giant bow, be sure to get that funding approved — uh oh, may have to cut back on those holiday charge card purchases — and let’s review those inspections so that you’re completely informed about the home. But sellers, well, they’re not quite as excited about selling during the holiday season. And it shows. Far fewer homes are on the market during this time of year. Picture this: You’ve worked so hard to get your home in perfect show-ready condition just waiting for buyers to come view your home. And you wait. You keep waiting for a Realtor to text or call you to notify you of their planned arrival, but you gotta live your life. So tonight, you start cooking dinner and you have a list of 100 things to do, baking cookies, wrap a couple of presents and sure enough, the FedEx driver drops off still another package from Amazon and Blue Apron (believe me … Blue Apron is awesome). And guess what? You just realized that you have a text from 15 minutes ago. An agent says they’re bringing over a buyer in one hour. One hour, now what? The home now has that lived-in look (slang for “it’s a little messy”). Quick, throw everything in the garage, grab the dog and go find somewhere to hang out while the buyer visits. No problem. We’ll just be up until midnight getting everything done that we could be doing now. So that’s why fewer homes are on the market at holiday time. It’s just not convenient. The numbers show this trend. At the time of publication, there are 110 homes for sale in Folsom, 195 in El Dorado Hills. While El Dorado Hills has a much smaller population, it’s normal for El Dorado Hills to have about 50 percent more homes for sale than Folsom at any given time. The high point for homes on the market this year in Folsom was 184 in July and El Dorado Hills was 293 in June. The low point in Folsom was 77 and in El Dorado Hills was 130 in December 2016. That trend has been fairly consistent in the past three years. ✶ to contact pat quan, call 916-812-4341, email pquan@cbnorcal.com or go to patquan.com. bre #01918240.
