ne sunny weekend last month I was enjoying my normal morning routine of running the Granite Bay Multi-Use Trail at the lake with my faithful dog Willow. This time of year I run in the dark during the weekday mornings before work, so I really appreciate weekends where I can sleep a little later and run in the morning light. I was coming up the steep backside of the water tower hill when a young man flew by in the other direction, full speed down the hill, race bib fluttering from the wind, putting a smile on my face as I appreciated the effort I knew it took to run that fast in the lead of his race. A few more racers went by as I continued to the top, where in the background I could hear the race announcer’s loudspeaker excitedly calling out information, a joyful sound of people actively experiencing a wonderful recreational opportunity. I was reminded of how lucky we are to have the Folsom Lake State Recreation Area right in our backyard.

There at the top of the hill I ran into a local acquaintance walking her dog in the glorious morning air. After pleasant greetings, I was a bit deflated when she intimated how much she disliked that the park allowed races on the trails. She resented having to

8

wait in line in her car at the park entrance, she objected to how fast people ran by, and she hated the noise from the race announcer’s loudspeaker, which disturbed the area’s wildlife.

While I understood her feelings, she seemed surprised when I responded, respectfully, that I didn’t really mind and actually liked seeing people getting out and enjoying the park. She then mentioned the mountain bikers, who apparently offended her all the more. Again I understood her position and did agree that it was important for bikers to slow down when passing people and equestrians, and in my experience this is almost always what they do. A state recreation area is meant to be shared and enjoyed by all people and not be exclusive to local residents or any particular party. Further yet, I love the Placer County Recreation/Eureka Union School District idea of adding public sports facilities behind Eureka School, and more bike paths throughout our community. Watch for more news on this in 2018.

I remember years ago when we first moved to Granite Bay and occasionally on summer weekend mornings we could hear in the background the loud sound of high-performance speed boats firing up their engines at the lake. At the time I asked a neighbor if the noise ever bothered him and his reply was beautiful: “Bother me? No, those are happy sounds!” I realized he was onto something important — so let’s enhance and share our resources, take joy in the joy of others, and be welcoming in our wonderful community.

he end of December is a vacation for most of us — a time for company, for indulgences, for liveliness and pageantry to interrupt what author Douglas Adams called “the long, dark tea-time of the soul,” wherein the days are short and cold and the outdoors uninviting.

But it doesn’t take a child too many holidays to realize that the laws of nature and the universe don’t celebrate Christmas, or Hanukkah or Kwanzaa for that matter, and what graces there are in winter we provide for ourselves.

I learned this lesson when I was 8 years old, stricken by an infectious disease and hoping against hope that it wouldn’t ruin my Christmas. My twin brother and I had contracted chickenpox at the start of winter break, and aside from frequent napping and itching, a loss of appetite and feeling generally unwell, this meant forfeiting a few of the luxuries on which the holiday seemed to depend. (Small stakes, I know, but proportions are different when you’re four feet tall.)

There would be no weekends of shopping in the city, no trips to the local mall, no visiting friends or neighbors and no gathering of relatives. I knew there would still be presents, but the prospect of a quiet and solitary holiday didn’t jibe with my 8-year-old conception of the Most Wonderful Time of the Year. Life, shockingly, was neither fair nor beholden to me.

My brother and I may have been slightly too young for outrage at losing a winter break to illness, or guilt over imposing quarantine on our parents and older brother. But it turns out we were old enough to learn about making do.

One of the less exciting but still focal holiday traditions for my Catholic family was attending midnight mass on Christmas Eve, and it was this ritual that we reproduced, my two brothers with my parents and I, in our living room that year. Seated in a semicircle around a small piano, we recited the Christmas liturgy and read aloud the story of the holy family by candlelight as my mother played. We held our own little mass, said our prayers, and as we passed the scriptures back and forth, I found it made no difference hearing them in our own private church instead of a public one. It was a makeshift Christmas in spite of the circumstances. I have come to realize there is no other kind.

My opinion of Catholicism has changed since then, but the mass stayed with me. I remember it now as a model of a holiday born, whether in history or metaphor, in a modest stable — a holiday that didn’t depend on sanctimony, fortune or anything more than the will to celebrate and make the most of things.

housands of spectators lined the streets of Roseville last Saturday morning to begin the holiday season enjoying one of the city’s great traditions. It was the 56th annual Sylvia Besana Holiday Parade, which featured nearly 100 participants, consisting of local businesses, charitable organizations and youth groups marching down the street to lead the community in its first dose of holiday cheer. The event even featured snow on Vernon Street and a donation of more than $30,000 made to the Placer Breast Cancer Foundation by Roseville NASCAR champion and business owner Bill McAnally. preschool opens in Granite Bay

I

t’s little wonder why Little Sunshine’s Preschool & Playhouse chose Granite Bay for its first California location.

The Springfield, Missouri-based franchise, with 20 sites around the United States, isn’t a one-size-fits-all model of days of preschool yore, with juice, naptime, maybe some games and not much else. This school — which had a ribbon-cutting Nov. 18 for its $5-million campus at 5370 Douglas Blvd. — features red carpet drop-off, yoga and cameras for parents to check in on their kids.

It’s a high-end school for a high-end area like Granite Bay, where the average annual household income is roughly $110,000.

For Little Sunshine’s CEO Rochette Dahler, who founded the system’s first

school in 2002, the enterprise grew out of her desire to provide the right kind of preschool for her first child, with whom she was pregnant at the time.

“I think it’s the same thing that motivates any parent: you just want the best for your child, and if you don’t see it available in the market, sometimes you’re willing to go to extreme lengths to provide that.”

Employing the “Reggio Emilia” philosophy of preschool education, Little Sunshine’s takes a bit of a different approach to preschool. For one thing, Dahler said, the classroom is considered a third teacher, with an ever-changing environment and 24 different themes depending on what the children are being taught.

“The children, for the most part, are given very open-ended activities, very

project-based activities,” Dahler said.

“Really, it’s directed play.”

Reviews of Little Sunshine’s have been mostly positive on the website Glassdoor. com, where anonymous current and former employees can leave feedback. The main page averages an approximate fourstar out of five rating, with 73 percent of respondents saying they’d recommend working there to a friend.

Some of the limited criticism on the page revolved around high demands of staff and turnover, though Dahler stressed in her interview for this story that overall, things were going well. She said aside from the school’s financial success, she was pleased with employee potential to advance within the company.

She noted that with the school being around as long as it has, some former students are even starting to teach there.

They keep an eye on the educational progress of students as well.

“We’re able to track their developmental … milestones to make sure they’re getting ready and prepared for kindergarten,” Dahler said.

Roughly a week before its scheduled Nov. 27 opening, Little Sunshine’s Granite Bay school was 70 percent pre-enrolled.

In time, it could become the first of many locations in California.

With approximately 20 active schools, one in construction and another eight in development, there could be much more to come for Little Sunshine’s — perhaps as many as 100 schools nationally.

“As long as I’m happy continuing to do what I’m doing, I think that we’ll just keep on growing and going directly down this path,” Dahler said.

ince late 2016, Placer County has faced a series of California Environmental Quality Act lawsuits over Granite Bay development projects.

One by one, the CEQA suits seem to be going in the county’s favor.

On Nov. 3, Judge Charles Wachob denied a petition for a writ of mandate for Granite Bay residents Paul and Carla Novaresi. The couple had sued the county last year over The Park at Granite Bay, a 56unit residential development the board of supervisors approved Oct. 11, 2016.

A number of Placer County residents voiced dissent that day in Auburn, though Supervisor Kirk Uhler gave a PowerPoint presentation in favor of the development. The board ultimately voted 4-1 to approve it and certify its environmental impact report.

Placer County counsel Clayton Cook praised Wachob’s 22-page ruling which shot down concerns about drainage, traffic impacts, emergency vehicle access and more.

“That affirmation from the court was certainly encouraging,” Cook said.

West — as real parties in interest. A spokesman for Tattersall, Bill Halldin, issued a statement that read, “We are pleased with the court’s decision.”

According to the California Secretary of State’s website, Maverick Partners West has been defunct since 2012. The Placer County Recorder’s Office website said Sierra College Partners deeded the land for The Park in 2015 to a Nevada-based company, Granite Meadow LLC, which wasn’t included in the suit.

Larissa Berry, president of local activists’ group Defend Granite Bay, questioned Wachob’s ruling, including a section that noted “the county considered whether the developer could redraw lot lines to avoid the need for a variance, but concluded that a smaller, 40-home project would be infeasible as it would have a negative residual land value,” in other words causing the project to not pencil out.

“CEQA is not to consider the economic feasibility of a project,” Berry said.

It is unclear if the Novaresis, who expressed willingness to be interviewed for this story but ultimately couldn’t be reached, will appeal.

“Even if there was an appeal, I’m hopeful this ruling would be upheld,” Cook

said. “It’s … 22 pages. The judge went quite in-depth into it. I feel like that probably bodes well for us if it does go to appeal.”

Two other CEQA lawsuits have been filed in the past year in Granite Bay. One, against Ovation Senior Living, went to settlement in the spring, well before any trial could be held, Berry said.

Wachob also ruled in the county’s favor in April in the other suit, over expansion efforts at Treelake Storage Facility, with Wachob denying plaintiff Scott Vaughan’s request for a temporary injunction against construction. This lawsuit is ongoing.

All three groups of plaintiffs have been represented by Davis attorney Donald Mooney.

Cook wasn’t sure if Wachob’s favorable ruling for The Park signaled the end of CEQA suits in Granite Bay. “I think there probably will always be some sort of CEQA litigation out there on projects, but I am encouraged by this ruling in that it shows an indication that the courts have upheld situations where good environmental reports are done (and) good evaluations are done by the county,” Cook said.

Popular Granite Bay establishment shut its doors in October

ince late October, Ashley Adams has witnessed the same routine multiple times.

Adams works at a business in the Quarry Ponds Town Center, where GB Alehouse & Restaurant served as a popular eatery, bar and live music venue until it abruptly closed Oct. 23. For the past month, Adams has watched as prospective customers have approached the shuttered business and then left dejectedly.

It was an unexpected end for a popular rendezvous spot in Granite Bay, still unexplained by former owner Chad Wells.

Wells didn’t respond to multiple requests for comment before press time, though Adams said he closed shop due to an issue with landlord Capital Pacific Company.

“I heard that they were trying to raise the rent on them,” said Adams, who works with Well’s daughter Deidre Wells.

Wells’ mother-in-law Sharon VanLandingham said he basically closed the alehouse due to his landlord, though an increase in California’s minimum wage set to take effect in January might have factored in as well. She said her son-in-law was taking the closing of the alehouse hard.

“He’s not very happy about it and he’s very sad right now,” VanLandingham said.

Capital Pacific Company representatives denied that a rent increase was looming. During an interview at the firm’s Douglas Boulevard offices, co-owner Tony Cardoso said Wells was under a lease, though he refused to provide a copy of this lease or say when it was due to expire.

“We’re not the reason he closed up,” Cardoso said.

Betty Patrick, a commercial property manager for Capital Pacific Company, said Wells had expressed concerns about two

competing businesses that had recently opened nearby.

During the interview, Cardoso removed a mesh cap that he was wearing.

“I take my hat off to anyone in business,” he said. “It’s not easy.”

the alehouse’s corporate name, Vanwells, Inc. appeared to be up to date.

John Carr, a spokesman for the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control, said the alehouse’s liquor license was active through mid-2018, with no disciplinary history.

The current liquor license dates to 2012 and also covered the alehouse under a previous business at the location, Pete’s Restaurant & Brewhouse. The Sacramento Business Journal noted in an Oct. 27 story about the alehouse’s closing that it was located “in a large corner space that has been a succession of restaurants.”

Adams said she visited the alehouse daily and that it had a large beer selection and full bar. The alehouse’s website notes that it had “32 available tap handles that hold our California local house brews and our rotating hand-picked craft brews.”

A sign posted on the alehouse’s door Nov. 17 said that it was “unfortunate to lose such a popular part of our center and we are working to fill the space with another business that will serve the Granite Bay community.”

The alehouse was particularly known as a live music venue, with indoor and patio accommodations for bands. Adams said live music would play at the alehouse Thursday and Saturday, primarily a mix of country and reggae groups.

VanLandingham said it was unlikely her son-in-law would attempt another restaurant and that he now works with a family member’s heating and air business.

Cardoso and Patrick said they’d been getting calls about the former GB Alehouse property and that they hope to fill the space with another business soon.

ifty Granite Bay residents helped bring Thanksgiving early to patrons of a weekly dinner last month for the needy provided by the Holy Family Catholic Church in Citrus Heights.

Working alongside Catholic Church members on Nov. 15, youth and adults from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints provided and served 15 turkeys, 10 chafing dishes of mashed potatoes, 10 of candied yams and 20 pies.

From setting up and decorating tables to mopping the floor and washing dishes, Granite Bay kids and adults made sure 125 guests were treated to a delicious meal after learning of the opportunity on justserve.com.

“The highlight of the evening was definitely seeing other people smile as we served them,” said Makayla Clement, a senior at Granite Bay High School. “It just really warms your heart and makes you feel so happy that you can help people. It makes you grateful for the things you have.”

After the meal, guests were treated to a surprise performance by the Ukeladies and Ukegirls, a group of 8 LDS youths and adults, directed by Karen Wilkes, who played sing-along folk songs on the ukulele. Leftovers were packaged up for patrons to take home, along with warm memories of holiday love and generosity.

Then and now in the Wedgewood neighborhood Paige Stauss has lived in Wedgewood for 25 years and is familiar with the histories of homes in her neighborhood.

Many homes have cycled through two or three owners but a few still house original occupants, she said.

ooking back on a quarter-century in Granite Bay’s Wedgewood neighborhood, Paige Stauss says her husband Eric brought her here kicking and screaming.

But having grown up in a military family that moved every few years, Stauss wanted her four children to have a single dot on the map to call home. She and Eric didn’t want it to be in the in the Bay Area.

Drawn by Granite Bay’s school districts, like many families who have moved here, the family arrived from Los Altos in 1992

and happened upon an opportunity they couldn’t pass up: a one-acre lot tucked beneath mature oak trees. And it was empty, so Stauss could build her dream home.

“When we saw this lot, we thought ‘This is it,’” Stauss says in her kitchen.

At about an acre, their lot is one of the biggest in the 70-home gated neighborhood and Stauss says it has provided the best of both worlds. At the end of a cul-desac, the front yard was for baseball games, soccer matches and building treehouses.

ground trampoline and several outdoor dining areas — was for privacy.

Stauss speaks of her neighborhood in past tense, not because she’s planning on moving away anytime soon, but because the days of street games and neighborhood dinners have waned.

Now that her kids are grown — ranging in age from 28 to 33, and in location from the Bay Area to Australia — Stauss’s days lean more toward the private side of her yard. Her neighbors keep to themselves more, too, often leaving to

visit their own grown children who have moved away.

Neighbors in Wedgewood, especially young families, used to gather on Christmas Eve, placing luminaries along the winding, sloping streets. On Halloween, they congregated around one neighbor who dressed as a witch every year and had a steaming cauldron of apple cider on her porch.

On other occasions, neighbors held progressive dinners, where appetizers, main courses and desserts were served at different homes and groups of eight moved from house to house. They had coffee meet-ups and group wine-tastings and their kids had playdates.

Except for maybe the progressive dinners, Stauss recalls all this without an air of nostalgia. Events like these going by the wayside are part of the natural shifts

that take place when you live somewhere for 25 years, she says. Many neighbors take advantage of having the time to travel, while others play golf at the nearby Granite Bay Golf Club. She, Eric and their 4-year-old German shepherd Meeka spend nearly every weekend at their other home near Lake Tahoe.

But Stauss senses a possible re-emergence of the activities she and her young family used to take part in. As older residents have moved out, younger families are taking their place and jumpstarting old traditions. A new family now heads the neighborhood’s social committee, she says, so maybe the progressive dinners will be back soon.

She points to a bulletin board on the wall of her kitchen and says she’s received a lot of birth announcements lately from childhood friends of her own children. Before that, the bulletin board was packed with wedding invitations. Before that, graduation announcements. An ever-changing chronicle of Wedgewood’s chapters.

“It was a joy watching everybody’s children grow up,” she says. “It’s been a fabulous place to raise kids.”

Pass the politics, please REPORTER’S VIEW |

n the days leading up to Thanksgiving, media outlets nationwide offered primers on how to embargo family conversations surrounding the dreaded P-word: politics.

As the outlier in my family, I get it. It’s uncomfortable to step outside the bubble I occupy 11 months out of the year — and even worse to hear contrary views coming from loved ones, the people I’m attuned to in every other way. Sometimes it’s embarrassing to hear a relative declare something that doesn’t sit right.

It’s dissonant at best and deal-breaking, for some, at worst.

So when I invited my younger brother over for Thanksgiving, I echoed similar sentiments as most people this time of year.

“No politics,” I said. “I mean it. I just want to be people eating food with other people.”

But I was quick to follow with an explanation: this year I was hosting friends, and I couldn’t predict their reactions to his opinions. If we were with the rest of our family, no problem.

In just about every chat we have, no matter the time of year, politics are fair game — particularly with my brother. He and I can talk for hours about issues that often make misaligned conversationalists blow their tops: gun control, abortion, immigration, military presence in other countries, marriage equality.

And what’s more, these talks are peaceful and productive.

behind us, he pointed out how rare it is to have a relationship like this, especially as siblings and especially in the current political climate.

“But I think that’s the problem,” he said. “No one wants to talk to anyone who doesn’t think like them, so we just don’t talk about political issues anymore.”

For once, I agreed — and not just to disagree.

Realistically, I don’t think keeping the peace boils down to a list of tips (though I’m sure all those pre-Thanksgiving survival guides mean well). I doubt there’s some secret key to unlocking a pleasant political discourse with everyone. I wish it were that easy.

Part of it is sheer luck, being given a sibling whom I trust and respect completely. But I know it comes down to hard work, too, and ground rules. We cross party lines with one common understanding: neither of us goes into a conversation thinking we’ll radically change the other’s mind. We’re at peace with that.

In short, I think my brother’s onto something. Maybe things could be a little more peaceful, a little more productive in 2018 if we could each find a person to talk to on “the other side” of things, rather than ignoring the opposite view out of fear, impatience, embarrassment, what have you. Some of us get to see family only once a year, and while that may be a reason to ignore political discussions, I see it as an opportunity to better understand the ones I love most, face-to-face.

And when the talk is over? Any lingering spaces between us are filled by the best parts of the season: cribbage games, eggnog, cheesy Christmas movies and the reminder that we’re family, always, whichever side of the ballot we land on.

Yellow ribbon project HO M ETOWN HER OES |

he 2017 holiday season marks the 10-year anniversary for what has become an annual holiday tradition in Granite Bay. You may notice almost three miles of Douglas Boulevard, the trees, the welcome sign and a few fence lines of this busy commute lane are adorned with yellow ribbons to welcome in the holiday season.

The idea began in 2007, when four boys from three Granite Bay families entered the military. The families were close to each other and met often to support each other as their boys defended our country. That year, two of the boys remained overseas for the holidays.

As a reminder to military families that their loved ones were not forgotten — and to remind the thousands of commuters who travel daily down Douglas to respect and remember those who are away in defense of our country — the three families came up with the idea to tie the yellow ribbons.

History tells us that the yellow ribbon is a symbol of remembrance of military men and women who serve in places far from home. Historically, when tied around a tree, the ribbon represents an absent family member. It’s a powerful symbol of the ties that bind.

At first the three families gathered a few volunteers and spent a majority of a pre-Thanksgiving morning tying ribbons along Douglas Boulevard. The families thought it was only going to be a one-time, one-year thing, but their boys’ military deployments continued. Emails and phone calls of thankfulness kept pouring in from other military family members who travel this road. Holiday seasons came and went, and the yearly ribbon-tying stayed alive.

As the years went by, more and more volunteers became involved. Local Gold Star families who lost loved ones at war became aware and jumped on board, and a local military support nonprofit called The Honor Group purchased the ribbons and helped to organize the event. Local corporate sponsors came on with help. The Boy Scouts, the ladies of the Royal Court for the Placer County Beauty Pageant, the Granite Bay girls’ volleyball team and many other volunteers over the years have joined in to offer annual ribbon-tying support.

In addition, over the years the ribbon-tying group has tied blue ribbons in respect for fallen officers

and first responders who have died in the line of duty. If you visit the Quarry Ponds shopping center, you will note that more than a few of the ribbons adorning trees in this center have the names of a fallen military service man or officer written on them in remembrance.

And the emails keep coming in. One military service man who just returned from war wrote to the nonprofit: “I returned from my deployment to Afghanistan a few months ago and just moved back to Granite Bay after being out of the area for seven years. I sincerely appreciate the Yellow Ribbons on Douglas Blvd. to thank our veterans and commemorate the sacrifices of service members and their families. Thank you!”

It is a great honor to be one of the founding members of the original three families who started this annual tradition. I am also grateful to say that out of the three families who first started this tradition, all of our boys returned from war safely, but we must never forget the ones who continue to proudly serve and remember those around our great nation who might never return.

In respect for all of you in Granite Bay who allow us to continue this beautiful and respectful holiday tradition, we say thank you. My Hometown Heroes for this month are the citizens of this great community that allow us to keep this holiday tradition alive! Thank you Granite Bay, merry Christmas and I wish you all a happy and safe New Year!

hat do holiday parties and get-togethers all have in common? Food and drinks, as in high-calorie food and drinks! It’s no wonder most people gain weight during the holidays.

Everywhere you turn, you’re surrounded by sweet temptations — holiday cookies, gingerbread houses, pumpkin pies and more.

Even healthy foods like sweet potatoes and green beans are magically transformed into high-calorie dishes that will make you want to do nothing but fall asleep. And don’t forget the drinks.

Eggnog and alcoholic beverages are loaded with calories.

Want to sidestep those holiday pounds?

STAY FOCUSED Yes, the holidays bring yummy foods and drinks, but friend gatherings and family traditions aren’t about food. Before a party, remind yourself what the holiday season is all about — friends, family, giving and religious traditions. Then stay focused on the reason for the season rather than the plate full of hors d’oeuvres in front of you.

Second, stay focused on your fat-loss goals. Remind yourself of how far you’ve come and where you’re headed. Keep your goals in the forefront of your mind. A few bites of food aren’t worth hours on the treadmill.

The holidays can be a time of emotional eating. For many people, the holidays bring stress, family conflict or depression.

Learn to address the root of your problems with solutions other than food or drink.

STRATEGIZE Is your holiday social calendar filled with night after night of parties and events? It’s time to come up with a plan. If you want to keep your diet on track, you’ll need to pace yourself. Don’t come to a party hungry but eat a small low-calorie snack ahead of time. Otherwise, you’ll overeat. When it’s time for extreme measures, wear tight-fitting clothes around your waist so there’s not much room for expansion.

Before and after a meal, chew gum so you won’t be tempted to overindulge in appetizers and desserts. During a party, don’t stand right next to the food table, but keep a safe distance. And before you get a plate of food, choose your plate wisely. Go with a small plate instead of a large dinner plate and don’t go back for seconds!

Another important strategy is figuring out how to get in a workout between parties. Leaving room in your busy holiday schedule for exercise will help you fight off the extra weight trying to attach itself to your midsection and rear.

WISE CHOICES Be smart about what you choose to eat. Don’t deprive yourself of all the foods you love or you’ll likely splurge and ruin all your good intentions. Enjoy the goodness of the season, but in moderation. Trim calories where you can by limiting your trimmings — cheeses, gravy, sauces, creams and nuts.

The holidays offer many food choices not available the rest of the year. Because of this, you may want to overindulge before they’re gone. Instead of doing this, survey what foods are available and make your choices. Indulge in your favorites and leave the everyday dishes for another time. Only eat what you love, and don’t just eat something because it’s on the buffet.

Also, be sure to limit the amount of alcoholic beverages you drink. As you likely know, they’re filled with calories, too. Try alternating an alcoholic drink with a non-alcoholic drink.

Exercise is a huge part of the equation when it comes to preventing holiday weight gain. Remember exercise burns calories and also decreases that dreaded holiday stress! Exercise is the most important thing to fit into your busy December schedule — as difficult as it may seem, it is well worth the time! No one ever regrets the time that they make for exercise, we only regret the time that we didn’t make. Block out some time and just do it; you will be glad you did, today and after the holidays.

Follow these simple tips, and you will avoid holiday weight gain this season and start the New Year off right!

Cork is made from the bark of a particular species of oak tree, Quercus suber: • A cork tree is typically harvested for the first time when it turns 25 years old.

• It can subsequently be harvested every nine to 12 years • A cork tree’s average life expectancy is about 200 years.

• When harvested, a typical cork tree will yield around 100 pounds of bark, enough corks for about 4,000 bottles.

Portugal has come to dominate the modern production of cork. The country is home to about half the world’s commercial cork-producing oak trees.

There are differing opinions on whether bottles with cork enclosures enhance the wine over a period of time, as bigger, fuller wines benefit from a little oxygen which the cork naturally allows. The tiny bit of air inside the bottle helps smooth out the tannins, giving reds their velvety mouth feel but sometimes creating a harsher taste. The extra air oxidizes the tannins so they’re softer, making the wine even more drinkable and approachable to the consumer. There is not enough history on screw caps to determine whether the air in the enclosed bottle results in the same benefits as a cork enclosure.

It is generally agreed that 3 to 5 percent of all bottles with natural corks show some degree of spoilage. Therefore if a winery is bottling $1 million worth of wine, they stand to lose between $30,000 and $50,000 due to cork taint.

Eighty-five percent of wine produced in Australia and 90 percent in New Zealand is bottled under screw cap.

There are other enclosures hitting the market, such as glass stoppers, synthetic cork and plastic enclosures.

At the end of the day, it is the wine in the bottle that will determine the consumer’s purchase and hopefully not the type of enclosure.
