YULE-TIDE CUSTOMS VARY WIDELY IN DIFFERENT LANDS With more than 600,000,000 throughout the world observing Yule-tide, the ceremonies alike in most of their fundamental religious aspects, will differ materially in various countries as to details. Two-thousand years before Christ, Yule-tide was celebrated by the Aryans, the great branch of the human family from which most of the Christian races are descended. The Aryans were sun-worshippers. Day by day, as the sun’s power decreased, these primitive people feared they would be overwhelmed by darkness and remain forever in the underworld. When it apparently wheeled about and grew stronger, they felt they had been born again. The Hweolor-tid, or turning-time, therefore was a period of rejoicing at the annual re-birth of the sun. The origin of many Yule-tide customs may be found in the myths and legends of our Indo-European ancestors.

Since the fact of Christ’s birth was not recorded and there was no certainty as to date, the early Christian Fathers wisely ascribed it to Yule-tide, and the birthday of the sun became that of the Son. The birth of Christ was celebrated on dates varying from the first to the sixth of January; on dates of such festivals as the Jewish Passover, or the Feast of the Tabernacle. But Dec. 25 was ever a favorite date.

The holly, laurel, mistletoe of the Druids still serve as decorations of the season, standing as emblems of resurrection and immortal hope. New Year’s Day as a feast day is one of the oldest, being mentioned by the Tacitus in the First Century, but it is referred to as a Christian festival about 567. The Romans dedicated the day to the god Janus, for whom January was named. Numa ordained it as a day of good fellowship, when grudges were to be forgotten and sacrifices of cake and wine made to the two-faced god who looked forward and backward.

There is some uncertainty as to the date of the first Christmas cards, but general opinion is that the initiate belongs to J. C. Horsley, P. A., who in 1846 on behalf of Sir Henry Cole, dispatched a card described as “an elaborate affair, showing two allegorical designs of clothing

the naked and feeding the hungry, with a family group of three generations, quaffing wine.

Another custom originating in the United States, growing rapidly and even spreading to other countries, is that of sending telegrams of greeting at Christmas or New Year’s. Seeing the possibilities offered for greater usefulness, the Western Union Telegraph Company several years ago began paying special attention to the holiday greeting service, and specially decorated message blanks and envelopes were devised. The service since has been extended to cablegrams, and the telegraph administration in foreign countries have been studying it with a view to possible adoption.

In feudal times in England, Yule-tide observance was on a magnificent scale, several thousand retainers sometimes being feasted in the baronial hall. In 1248 King Henry III held a feast for the poor which lasted a week.

Richard II held Christmas at Litchfield and 2,000 oxen and 200 tons of wine were consumed.

The hanging of a stocking as a receptacle for gifts was accounted for by a story that St. Nicholas dropped a purse down a chimney, which fell into a stocking hung up to dry. In Norway, Santa Claus has an assistant, Kris Kringle, while in Swizerland, Father Christmas is accompanied by his wife, St. Lucy, who looks after littler girls. In Russia gifts are credited to the Babuska, or Grandmother.

In France, Italy, Spain and other Latin countries, the Praesepio or Christmas Crib, is an important feature of Yule-tide. The Praesepio frequently includes the stable and its occupants, Mary, Joseph and “the Bambino” or Holy Babe, and the surroundings of Bethlehem.

'You can do better in Auburn'

DEC. 23, 1937

n Dec. 23, 1937, the Auburn Journal printed several articles highlighting Christmas parties in Auburn that had recently taken place. The newspaper also printed a front-page story on the importance of shopping local, stressing “You can do better in Auburn.”

CHRISTMAS PARTY AT GRIFFIN HOME The home of Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Griffin on Electric Street was the setting for the delightful Christmas party for the members of the Joy Dispensers Sewing Club and their husbands on the evening of Sunday, Dec. 19.

A buffet luncheon was served at 7 o’clock followed with the distribution for gifts from the beautifully decorated tree.

Those attending were Mr. and Mrs. Jack Veihuier and daughter, Gladys; Mr. and Mrs. Peter Hawkins and daughter, Barbar; Mr. and Mrs. Andy Dorer; Mr. and Mrs. Calley Faulk; Mr. and Mrs. James F. Grant; Mr. and Mrs. George Burton; Mr. and Mrs. Earl Linsday; Mr. and Mrs. Carry Needham and the host and hostess.

HUSBANDS ENTERTAINED AT CHRISTMAS PARTY The G. G. Sewing club entertained their husbands at a Christmas party held at the Midgley ranch on Sunday evening, Dec. 12.

At 5:30 a delightful dinner was served.

The large living room was beautifully decorated in blue and silver. An ornamental centerpiece with crystal candle sticks holding blue tapers on either side decorated the center of the table. Small individual candelabra with silver base and blue candles marked each place.

Immediately following the dinner, everyone gathered around the Christmas tree where all were remembered with many gifts.

The various jokes and mechanical toys caused an evening of hilarious merriment. At this time the members of the sewing club discovered who their pals have been for the past year.

Cards were then the diversion for the remainder of the evening.

A light lunch was served later.

STORES REMAIN OPEN EVENINGS “You can do better in Auburn” is a slogan which again proves correct for gift buyers.

Every Auburn store is taxed to capacity to take care of the last minute gift buying which merchants hope will give them the best sales record in the history of the city.

Thursday and Friday sales, the final two days before Christmas, are expected to establish a new record in volume for a two-day period.

The Auburn stores still have a fine selection of gift merchandise on hand and extra help has been added to make shopping as easy as possible during the closing days of the 1937 season.

To aid shoppers, the stores will remain open until 9 o’clock this evening (Thursday) and until 7 o’clock on Friday (Christmas Eve). The 7 o’clock closing was decided upon to give employee and employer an opportunity to be with their family on the night before Christmas.

A comparison of prices of merchandise in the local stores with prices posted in larger cities discloses the fact which this Journal has time and time again stressed to the people of this trading are – YOU CAN DO BETTER IN AUBURN. Street entertainers have joined with Santa Claus during the past week in adding to the Christmas spirit which flows throughout the city.

DEC. 25, 1947 1,600 KIDDIES ENJOY FREE XMAS PARTY Over 1,600 children crowded the State Theatre last Friday afternoon to attend the annual Free Kiddies’ Christmas Party, sponsored jointly by the Lions Club, the State Theatre and the Auburn Journal.

Every seat in the house was taken by enthusiastic youngsters who enjoyed a fine screen program arranged by C. J. Remington, theater manager.

Santa Claus was at the door to greet the children and present a gift of candy to each one.

The children came from Auburn and surrounding communities for the party. School principals cooperated by dismissing classes so the children could attend.

A committee from the Auburn Lions Club headed by Vernon McCann gathered at the Safeway Store the previous night and filled more than 1,600 sacks of candy for the children. The candy was supplied by the Auburn Lions.

CARVETH, ALLEN CONCERNS HAVE XMAS PARTY The fourth annual dinner for employees of the Carvteth Motors and the Allen Motor Company was held at the Hotel Auburn last Monday night.

Alvin Carveth and Everett Allen, partners in the two concerns, were hosts on the occasion.

A turkey dinner was served after which a Christmas tree was held gifts distributed to all present. Competitive singing was held by choruses made up of members of the two concerns.

Roy B. Hebard acted as master of ceremonies, and the following committees functioned: General Chairman Alvin Carveth; reception, Mr. and Mrs. Everett Allen, Mrs. Alvin Carveth and Mrs. Charles Carveth; menu and cake, Charles Carveth and Chester Knittle; hors d’oeuvres, Mrs. William Clancy, Mrs. Joe Yurkovic and Mrs. Wendell Holmes.

excitement is over, yet with no joy in your heart, no fresh vision of life, you have missed the big tent. But perhaps it is not yet too late, even though it may be the day after. Sit down and think of the meaning of the coming of a Love like Christ’s into a world like ours. It was a joyous and tragic thing. Joyous because there were humble shepherds and wise men who caught the meaning of it all, but it was tragic because it aroused the hatred of men like Herod, who in fear of their own selfish purposes would crush it.

But the Love that came down at Christmas won its great victories in the hearts of men and changed the world. In fact, about all the light now in the world came from it.

It has blest us beyond our comprehension. Yet it is threatened today as it has been for centuries. So we need once more to take A CHRISTMAS MESSAGE time to think deeply, and let that Love come into our hearts. Then At Christmas, too many of us are like the small boy at the circus we shall find the peace and joy we all crave. Let’s not miss the big who spent all his money on the side shows and missed the big tent. tent at Christmas!

DEC. 19 AND 26, 1957 HOMEMAKERS AID CHRISTMAS SPIRIT The Placer High School homemaking department has contributed to the Christmas spirit during the final weeks prior to vacation by making decorations for the desk of each teacher in the school.

Each decoration was individually designed, using a variety of greens, cones, colored balls, candles and glitter.

The main hall display case has featured gifts made in the homemaking department and two cakes made and decorated in the boys’ food class.

Instructors in this department are Mrs. Mary Clifton, Mrs. Britta Callamaras and Miss Nancy McBride.

PLAN NOW FOR CHRISTMAS 1958 Most people will think it’s kind of early to start talking about Christmas 1958 when they’re still caught in the middle of this year’s Yuletide whirl. But bank experts say the ideal time to start saving for Christmas is 12 months ahead. Then you won’t make too big a dent in your family finances when December rolls around.

To figure out how much to put away each week, decide how much you’ll want to spend on next year’s Christmas using this year’s cost as your yardstick. Deduct from this amount anything you’ll have coming in the way of a Christmas bonus from the office and divide by the number of weeks until you’ll want to start your shopping.

Then at the date you set, you’ll have your entire Christmas fund.

Many people like to deposit their Christmas money in a special-purpose savings account at their local bank where they aren’t tempted to dig into it during the year.

Quite a few banks provide Christmas savings clubs which run in 50 week cycles for just this year purpose.

Last year saw the largest payoff in the history of these clubs. Almost 13 million Americans saved more than one billion dollars and the average check totaled around $93 for each member.

Speaking of Christmas, you won’t find any “white beards” on your banker. But he or she is probably the nearest thing to Santa Claus you can find today when it comes to helping you with your personal finances.

KEEPING CUSTOMS

locals keep Old World traditions DEC. 21, 1967

T

hese photos are from the Auburn Journal’s Dec. 21 issue in 1967. An article describing one family’s “old world Christmas” was also included in this pre-holiday edition.

AN OLD WORLD CHRISTMAS Ed and Maria Preiss of Ginger Drive try to retain some of the old world Christmas spirit for their daughters, Francie and Monika. Ed made the crèche and the figures for the nativity scene especially for his family.

Except for the lack of snow that Maria was used to in Berchesgaten and Slesia, where Ed was born, the old customs will be observed. The tree won’t be decorated too early and the gifts will be brought by old Kris Kingle. Christmas Eve is strictly for the children. The Preisses will observe the old custom of having a fish dinner on Christmas Eve, the Advent candles will be burning and they will have a goose for Christmas dinner rather than the traditional turkey. There will be other goodies, too, such as pfeffernuess (a Christmas cookie) and stolen, a fancy yeast bread.

Maria would like to have her children share some of the old world Christmas charm in the manner in which she shared the holiday season with her two brothers in Berchesgarten several years ago before she and Ed came to this country.
