holiday tradition returns as Dave Koz and this magical combination of musicians gather together on stage to celebrate the season. Celebrated saxophonist Dave Koz will be joined by special guests David Benoit, Rick Braun and Peter White. Newcomer Selina Albright will also join in the festivities. Together, the five remarkable artists will perform fresh renditions of Christmas classics as well as a Chanukah medley and hits from their respective catalogs. Two decades ago, Grammy nominee Dave Koz launched his first-ever Christmas tour. Now, fans and families across the country await his arrival with the kind of anticipation formerly reserved for St. Nick himself, earning the saxophonist extraordi-

naire the nickname “Santa Koz.” In 1990, Koz decided to pursue a solo career and began recording for Capitol Records. He has logged nine No. 1 albums on Billboard’s Current Contemporary Jazz Album chart, including 2015’s “Collaborations: 25th Anniversary Collection,” and he has received nine Grammy nominations. His five holiday albums include 2014’s “The 25th of December.” Pianist David Benoit is a threetime Grammy nominee who has released 35 albums, scored several films and conducted such symphonies as the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the London Symphony Orchestra. Trumpet maestro Rick Braun has racked up more than 20 No. 1 singles and is also known for his work with RnR and the powerhouse trio BWB.

One of the most versatile and prolific acoustic guitarists on the contemporary jazz landscape, Peter White has had numerous No. 1 songs on Billboard’s Smooth Jazz Songs chart and is featured on tour-mate Rick Braun’s latest hit, “We Don’t Talk Anymore.” Selina Albright’s 2013 EP, “Brighter,” topped the UK Soul Chart for four weeks, and her new full-length album, “Conversations,” is out now, to the delight of her growing fan base. The show is presented as part of the Fitz’s Jazz Café at the McCallum series and is co-presented by CV 104.3’s Jim “Fitz” Fitzgerald. The laid back sounds of these masterful jazz performers will ensure a Smooth Jazz Christmas for all, possibly more exciting than presents under the tree.

TRAVEL

WINE COUNTRY is beautiful and better than ever By Monica L. Dashwood

T

hough the raging fires caused devastation in the Northern California region, what you many not realize is that the wine country is still open for business with so much to offer visitors from around the globe: Iconic wineries, top-chef restaurants, five-star hotels and breathtaking scenic drives. The wine country remains a one-of-a-kind destination the likes of no other region in the world. Contrary to what the media portrayed, approximately nine out of 1200+ wineries were severely damaged or destroyed by the fires in Napa, Sonoma and Mendocino counties. Today, harvest remains in full swing and the community at large is in good spirits, welcoming wine lovers near and far. Currently, the majority of the businesses have reopened their doors and look forward to doing what they do best. Simply put, now is the

best time to discover and tour the wine country. With winter around the corner, it’s also the perfect time to enjoy the quiet of the season, the cave tours, wine and food experiences, and wine tastings while sitting by a warm and cozy fireplace found in many of the wineries. As the threat from wildfires subsides, California’s Wine Country communities now face the daunting task of healing. Tourism is the Wine Country’s lifeblood. Many residents and businesses, even those

not directly impacted by the fires, lost weeks of work as fires forced evacuations and road closures. Visiting now will help these communities recover. “We’re open for business,” says Clay Gregory, president and CEO of Visit Napa Valley. “Now is the perfect time to experience the #NapaValleySpirit for yourself.” For the latest travel information, visit: visitcalifornia.com, visitnapavalley.com and sonomacounty.com.

ayne, “Woody” Woodliff is a human dynamo who became a favorite of local foodie’s years ago via Woody’s Burgers, his multi-award winning, 1950s-style diner located on Indian Canyon. In January of 2016, he upped his game by opening a more upscale “supper club” on South Palm Canyon he named Woody’s Palm House that quickly became a noted Palm Springs hot spot—with good reason. The Palm House décor fits neatly into its artistic downtown neighborhood through a successful combination of rustic and contemporary vibes. Mid-Century Modern fans will enjoy details like used brick accent walls and lamps and sconces created by local artisan Susan Dorazo. A lit and misted patio invites you

to enter French doors into a spacious dining room anchored by a stage. A nicely appointed bar area completes Woody’s vision…a pretty, relaxed ambience for a date night in our gorgeous Coachella Valley. Since resort areas breed fierce restaurant competition, Woody has adopted a philosophy that has helped build both a rapport and a solid reputation with his customers. “I believe in quality ingredients from area vendors whenever possible,” Woody said. “Then, offer a diverse menu, a friendly, capable staff and top it off with the finest music in this town seven nights a week.” For lunch, try the Spinach Strawberry Salad (with red onions, sprinkles of feta cheese, fresh strawberries and locally grown dates tossed with red wine vinaigrette) or the

Cuban Sandwich (succulent house braised pork with mustard, pickles and melted Swiss cheese on crusty, grilled sourdough bread). Highly recommended off the dinner menu: Start with the Tomato Basil Bruschetta (with roasted garlic crostini), then move to the Grilled Rack of Lamb (with creamy risotto, Cremini mushrooms, spinach and garlic drizzled with Cabernet sauce) or the Bistro Filet (accompanied by fingerling potatoes and seasonal vegetables.) The Pan-Seared Shrimp Scallop Pasta is also a winner! Check the web site for an entire month of entertainment at a go, especially featuring blues and jazz greats, local and otherwise. Most performances begin at 6:30 p.m. and reservations for large parties are very helpful.

Since then, he has tackled many positions in the field, including being general manager of a highend country club in the Valley. It’s evident from the ambience, service and excellent food that John

Foodie Faves: Herb Crusted Halibut (pan seared, herb crusted halibut filet, lemon butter sauce, rice pilaf and spinach—this fish was light and flaky) and Pasta Arrabiata (spicy tomato sauce with sun-dried tomatoes). onsidering its sand-and-scrub landscape, it took a charm offensive and sheer determination for Palm Springs to achieve its world-class tourist designation. Briefly, desert entrepreneurs made sure their city wrote the book on indoor-outdoor living; that the culture grew varied and inclusive; and that eateries often offer more than food. Allow me to introduce Oscar’s, a prime example of the restaurant-ascabaret concept with all the attractive hallmarks of life in a temperate climate. The spacious patio is softened with strings of lights and a gushing

fountain and from the bistro-style bar, you can watch an unending parade of passers-by. Heaters or the sun warm the space for day-into-night comfort. Operator Dan Gore is a 26year veteran of stage productions around the globe and knows how to please a crowd. His robust menu reflects his travels and his sensibilities. He recommends: the Grilled Pork Chop (with cranberry chutney, potatoes and asparagus) and the Seafood Fra Diavolo (shrimp, mussels, calamari over linguini in a spicy Marinara sauce) among many stellar menu items.

WINE

Meet the Vino Ladies Jules

A wine lover who appreciates the intricacies of different varietals, exploring how wines pair with food and learning more about how the weather, the land and processing affects the taste. An educated novice who is partial to full-bodied, jammy, reds with a smooth finish.

Cher

(not the famous one) A weekend wine taster who prefers a good craft beer over anything! Cut my wine tasting teeth on Rieslings and other sweet wines but have evolved through the years and now tend to gravitate towards red wines more than others. Enjoy fullbodied wines with low tannins and a smooth finish. Love the adventure of trying new wines but look for a bargain that is drinkable now.

Suze

Over 50 but feel like 30. I sometimes enjoy a boxed wine, over ice, by the pool on a hot summer night or a smooth, not too dry red, during the winter cold. I usually prefer a semi-sweet white wine but my tastes are evolving. I love to read or play on the beach with my puppy dog.

DeAnn

A marketing professional who has been a beer drinker for most of my life; probably because I played softball and the two just seemed to go together. On occasion, I enjoy a sweeter wine such as a White Zin, Chardonnay or Gewurztraminer. I’m a novice for sure and enjoy learning more about wine each day. I love the relaxed, social aspect of enjoying a glass of wine in the evening with a partner or a good friend. Email the Vino Ladies at VinoLadies@gmail.com.

hitehall Lane is a small, family owned winery in Napa Valley’s historic Rutherford appellation founded in 1979 although the history of the soil cultivation dates back two centuries. In the mid 1800s, Napa Valley settlers were drawn to the deep, loamy soils and ideal climate, planting high quality grape vines at the Whitehall Lane Winery site. A barn constructed in the early 1900s for equipment storage is still used today. They own approximately 140 acres of prime Valley-floor vineyards including the Leonardini Vineyard in St. Helena. The winery was founded by two brothers who directed their winemaking efforts successfully to Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. They named the winery after the road that runs along the south border of the property, Whitehall Lane. In 1993, the Leonardini Family of San Francisco took control of the Whitehall Lane estate. They updated the winemaking, instituted a new barrel-aging program and continued sourcing the finest vineyards. The winery continues to receive accolades and awards; in Wine Spectator Magazine’s year-end ranking of wines, Whitehall Lane has been honored an unprecedented three times in five years for producing wines rated among the top five in the world. The winery has also been voted Winery of the Year from the Quarterly Review of Wines and Wine and Spirits Magazine. According to the wine maker “The fruit for the Napa Valley 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon was hand-sorted and fermented in small lots at an average of 85°F with gentle pumpovers for excellent flavor and color extraction. The wine was aged in a

combination of French and American oak barrels for 18 months and blended to attain balance. 2013 is considered one of the finest growing seasons ever in the Napa Valley and for good reason. Outstanding spring weather was followed by and ideal summer. By harvest time, the grapes displayed a perfect balance between ripeness and structure. It is enjoyable now and will continue evolving through 2023.”

fect for a fall evening. At an SRP of $42, it’s a bit more than I would normally spend on a wine but it’s a perfect choice for date night or special occasion.

JULES: Upon first taste the initial hit is very berry forward; ripe cherries, then currants and then a hint of oak on the finish. The color is rich ruby, which is just what you want from a Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine is a blend of 86 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 8 percent Merlot, 3 percent Malbec, 3 percent Petit Verdot which offers structure and round tannins to make a well–balanced wine. That ‘balance’ makes it very enjoyable on its own but it would also be a perfect pairing for those upcoming holiday meals and would stand up to those fall favorite comfort foods.

SUZE: This full-bodied Cabernet found its way to the top of my wine list. Sit back, relax and enjoy this smooth, fruity wine. For me, it was love at first taste. I would suggest enjoying this wine with a collection of cheese!

CHER: The deep, ruby color of the Whitehall Lane Cabernet provided an enticing first impression. After tasting this Cabernet my first impulse was to grill some steaks and toast some s’mores! The fullbodied cherry fruits had a toasty finish per-

DeANN: Taste the Cherries, Smell the Cherries! A tasty full bodied Cabernet with a rich cherry aroma. Enjoyable on its own or a wonderful pairing with your favorite meal or appetizer!

Special Note: With the recent devastating fires, the Napa Valley stands strong and most businesses have reopened their doors to welcome wine enthusiasts back to the area. With Fall bringing cooler weather and clear skies, the region is bustling with activity and your visit or wine purchase could make all the difference to those who depend on visitors for their livelihood. So plan that weekend wine country getaway and stock up on your favorite wines for holiday dinner parties or gifts. Your patronage could help offset the costs of repairing damaged buildings or lost crop due to smoke and fire and support the Napa Valley we all love.

nyone who’s been out for dinner in downtown Palm Springs knows that when everything else closes up, there’s a bright, shiny beacon up the street at the Village Pub. Just re-opened after a major remodel, the restaurant, bar, sports lounge and nightclub combines live entertainment on one level and DJ music upstairs, indoor and outdoor bars and patios with seating, a full menu and the consistency of being open until 2 a.m. seven days a week. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday, the house band is Moonchild, and upstairs, known as The Loft, features DJ John Paul, DJ Javi and other favorite spinners. Expect to see lots of bachelorette parties, after-hours office gatherings and everything

in between from old friends reconnecting to those ready to dance the night away. For all those sports fans, the Pub has 32 flat screen televisions with full sound, positioned all around the establishment, and one 80-inch jumbo screen. Settle in and watch your favorite NFL, NBA, baseball hockey or soccer games, including NFL ticket from DirecTV full cable channels. Happy hour is offered seven nights a week from 4 until 9 p.m., including food and drink specials at any table and at all three bars, like Funky Fries, Flatbreads, Pub Nachos and so many others. Crafted cocktails such as the Honeydew Martini or the Palm Canyon Perfect Margarita are available for $11, as are wines by the glass for $7 and a full

selection of domestic and imported beers priced from $5.50 to $8.50 per bottle in addition to 72 tap handles. Full menu options for dinner include the Monte Cristo Sandwich, Jack Daniel’s burger, Cobb Salad or California Turkey Club, with many vegetarian, gluten-free and nonGMO plates. On the main floor where the real action is, table and booth seating is available as well as VIP Bottle Service for special parties, both by advance reservation 24 hours ahead. Online food ordering and delivery is even available from the Pub through Grubhub and Postmates. As they say at The Village Pub, this is the place to drink, dance and play…. and then some.

HAPPY HOUR FEATURE

THE REEF BAR AND LOUNGE Re-energize and escape with a taste of the tropics By Alison Elsner The Reef Bar and Lounge at Caliente Tropics Resort 411 E. Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs Open Daily Monday-Friday 2 p.m to 1 a.m. Saturday-Sunday 10 a.m. to 1 a.m. Daily Happy Hour 2 to 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. to Midnight 760-327-1391 calientetropics.com

DECEMBER 2017

I

n the ocean, a reef is an area of safety and nourishment for many forms of sea life. The Reef Bar at the historic Caliente Tropics Resort in south Palm Springs is aptly named, the latest creation from Tiki Caliente (an annual event each May) and Mod Palm Springs Founder Rory Snyder. This tropical themed libation sanctuary for all offers excellent craft cocktails and creative fare during their weekday “Hula Happy Hour” from 2 to 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. to midnight. Drink specials prepared by energetic bartenders include $4 Bud Lights, $5.50 Well Drinks and a sprightly selection of Polynesian themed beverages such as the Mai Tai, Honi Honi or Hot Hula Hibiscus ($6.50

each) and Palm Springs Punch and Eastern Whiskey Sour ($7 each). Favorite bar bites that make guests happy indeed between the hours of 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. include Slider and Fries or Chili Cheese Fries (both $5), Musubi (Spam) Tacos, Chicken Fingers and Coleslaw, Onion Rings, Fish and Chips and more (each for $6). Or try one of the dinner offerings like Chicken Parmesan ($15), Tropical White Fish ($17), Coconut Shrimp ($14), Cobb Salad ($12) or Sirloin Steak Burger ($13). Stick around for live entertainment Friday and Saturday nights beginning at 8 p.m., with acts like the Martini Kings or the monthly Yacht Rock event.

The A-frame entrance of the Caliente Tropics is an iconic structure in the Coachella Valley, established 50 years ago during the days of the Rat Pack. Once the location of the infamous Conga Room restaurant, the space has transformed and is once again a cool hub for fun and frolic. The Reef provides great views of the colorful Caliente Tropics pool and the hotel’s many hand-carved Tikis. A visit here gives guests the experience of vacationing on an exotic island without having to book an expensive airline ticket. Make some memories right here in the desert. As owner Rory Snyder reminds us, “Live entertainment doesn’t always happen on a stage. Sometimes it can happen behind a bar.”

MAKE A ‘DATE’ WITH A DATE at Coachella Valley History Museum By Gary Willhide The Date Museum at Coachella Valley History Museum 82616 Miles Avenue, Indio Hours Wednesday - Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday 1 to 4 p.m. Admission $8 for adults $6 for seniors (55+) Children 18 and under and active duty military are free 760-342-6651 cvhm.org

DECEMBER 2017

H

ave you ever come to the Coachella Valley for a date? We’re talking about the wrinkled ones with pits that go into fruitcakes and other tasty dishes, not the kind that involve dinner and a movie. And how did those dates with pits get here? There is a “gem” of a museum in Indio that answers that question and makes for a good family outing. Here’s how they got here. In the 1890s, the government was looking for opportunities to expand different industries. As part of that program, a man named Dr. Walter Swingle (an agricultural botanist who worked for the federal government) traveled in 1898 to the Middle East to learn about dates. In 1900, he brought 405 offshoots from Algeria to the United States. He

chose the Coachella Valley because he considered it to have the perfect climate for date growing. Other explorers followed Swingle in efforts to grow the date industry, and you can learn all about them at the Date Museum at the Coachella Valley Historical Museum in Indio. Dates are as old as the hills and mention of dates can be found in the Bible, the Qur’an and the Torah. Even today, dates are the first food eaten at the breaking of the fast during the Muslim observance of Ramadan. The Date Museum in Indio is believed to be the only museum in the world devoted to the ancient fruit. And rightly so, since 95 percent of the U.S. date crop is grown in the Coachella Valley. The date is a successful crop here because of the high temperatures, the lack of summer rain and the abundant underground water.

Those interested in the development of the date industry should plan a trip to the Date Museum and Garden (there is a working grove beside the museum of deglet noor date palms, growing what are thought by many to be the tastiest dates). This exhibit explores the history of this industry from its Middle Eastern origins to the horticulturists who brought the date successfully to California and the essential workers who harvested this fruit of the desert. The small museum is chock full of information about dates, historic photos, harvesting implements and tapestries from the Middle East with a date theme. The Coachella Valley History Museum campus also contains the Smiley-Tyler House, a 1926 adobe home which houses the main exhibCONTINUED ON PAGE 46 >>>

invited to contact Judy Sterling, the coordinator of volunteers, at 760-342-6651. The museum complex is located at 82616 Miles Avenue in Indio. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday. It is closed Monday and Tuesday. Admission is $8 for adults and $6 for seniors (55+). Children 18 and under and active duty military are free. Everyone is free the first Sunday of the month. For further information, call 760-342-6651.

f your appetite is whetted by your visit to the Museum, you can taste the real thing at Shields Date Garden at 80225 Highway 111 at the western edge of Indio. Shields has been around since the ‘20s and, in addition to selling many varieties of fresh dates, makes great date shakes and offers tasty dishes, many of them featuring dates, in its breakfast and lunch outdoor café. If that isn’t enough, you can watch their long-running video, “The Romance and Sex Life of the Date.” And fresh dates make great holiday presents for those back home.

ASTROLOGY

IN THE STARS Your robust December astrology report By Charlie Price

G

ive, give, give. It’s the theme of the month. So, dear souls, ask yourself: “How do I give? What can I give? Can I be more giving?” In the meantime, perhaps it’s time to lighten up? The stars think so. Take note: On Dec. 20, right around the time of the Winter Solstice, robust Saturn enters Capricorn—this, after a three-year transit through Sagittarius. That coupling may not have played out well for many people because Saturn, a planet of restriction, revealed that we don’t have all of the knowledge for achieving our goals. The invitation was simple but somewhat bold: Could we improve our various strategies and skills? With Saturn in Capricorn, it’s all about a deeper concentrated focus on career. Self-discipline, anyone? Ponder it and read on … Aries: Ambitious Aires, for you, this month may be more about how you can slow down, step back from your work, even if it’s just for a little bit, and reflect upon how far you have come. And, perhaps, be more generous to those outside of your work environment. This could prove to be remarkably noteworthy for you and give you the needed time to reflect upon things before Saturn enters Capricorn later in the month. Taurus: My oh my, you have been ambitious this year, haven’t you? The thing is: What wisdom can you offer others will all of the things you have learned? That’s the key for you now because, let’s face it, oh noble bull, you can’t take anything with you when, you know … so, share away. Meanwhile, the planetary influences note materialization of something that can quite grand. Time to allow it. Gemini: You’ve always been a social butterfly, but let’s caution you here because this month, you can have a tendency to go overboard. For single people hoping to make deeper connections, there’s a strong chance of forming love relationships as many planets of influence are moving forward and Gemini, Sun, Venus, Mars and your wonderful ruling planet are all in that delicious house of love. Stand back. Cancer: There goes that idea of wanting to be alone and contemplate things for a bit. Nice try. Maybe another time. So, for now … with autonomy and you’re your own determina-

tion not really serving you best at the moment, embrace compromise—at every turn. Yeah, it’s not sexy, but you can make it attractive. You’re a Cancer, remember? Besides, it’s the season of giving, so there’s that. Breathe. Virgo: Stop chatting for a moment and listen. Yes, I know this may sound like something absolutely ridiculous for you and please know that I am not suggesting that you always live up to your Cathy Chatty stereotype. It’s just that … well, if you consciously listen more this month, you will benefit from the position of the stars. The perk? You walk away with some newfound wisdom and a really stellar way to move through the next year with the current planetary influences. Libra: Money, money, money. It’s all about balancing that this month. The good news is that you’re so darn good at that kind of thing. With the heavens opening up for you, this is an ideal time to really, truly take on improving your finances. You can do that by being more creative. Is there another way you can make money that you may have forgotten? Scorpio: Here’s something to note, dear Scorpio: The majority of the planets are in the Southern part of your always interesting horoscope. Your house of Family and Home are triggered and will become the dominant theme after the 15th or so. Take advantage of that as career interests will take a backseat for a bit while you determine new ways to improve and maybe inspire your home life.

Sagittarius: Career matters tend to drift away—just for a bit. Ask yourself now: How can I be more giving to myself? I know, I know—you do plenty of that, but here’s the thing: Everything is working in your favor up there in the stars and your ability to make liberty such a key thing in your life has never been stronger this year. Design your own life—your way. Now. Capricorn: How great is this? You have it made this month. You’re balanced, focused, in charge, tapped in, turned on, and tuned in. But are you compassionate enough, and patient enough, with others who may not be? Perhaps those elements can be the most valuable gifts your offer others this month. You can do it. You’ve done it before. (Just don’t remind people of how much you’ve given them this time!) You can thank me—or slap me—later. Aquarius: Go with the flow now, dear soulful one. It’s best for you to take some time and really think about how you want your next birthday to unfold. Use the weekends to take advantage of the current planetary influences and reflect on what’s worked and what hasn’t this year, so, that, come late January, you’re ready to take on YOUR new year with aplomb. Pisces: Watch for emotions that run away from you. Try to reel them in. There is no need now for you to depend on others. You can wonderfully run your own show. Don’t worry about social graces, either. Just be one with yourself and flexible to see your yearly ambitions play themselves out. Bravo.
