Here are some potential alternatives: plain brown shopping bags, cut open and decorated with stickers or markers; several layers of tissue paper; fabric and a nice bow. Aluminum foil makes a lovely wrapping if you can avoid overhandling it, and handle bags from stores can be converted by gluing or taping the front of a Christmas card over the store logo, if it’s small enough.

• Holiday gatherings can be hectic when it comes to holding on to your cup. If you host a party, use disposable cups that can be written on, and put out a marker. You’ll use fewer cups, meaning there will be less to clean up.

• Get kids in on the act of cooking. There’s no better time than the holidays to get budding chefs into your family’s holiday traditions. Let them help prep, and as they get older, assign cherished side dishes to appropriate age children.

Social Security Matters

“Ask Rusty” - Estimated vs Actual Benefits Dear Rusty: I am going to stop working in October 2018 at age 62. I do not want to start drawing my Social Security then (at age 62 it would be $1,005/month; normal retirement is 66 years, 4 months, $1,454/month). I do not plan on taking another job. I plan to start taking my benefits at my normal retirement date. Will my benefits at normal retirement be reduced for each year I don’t work or will they remain at the current amount? Is there a certain percentage they reduce them or a formula they use? Signed: Planning For Retirement Dear Planning: Okay, so let’s first tackle the question of your estimated retirement benefits at age 62 and also at age 66 + 4 months which is your “normal” or full retirement age (FRA). These benefit estimates, which you have gotten from your My Social Security account at the Social Security website, assume your current earnings level will continue until you reach your full retirement age. If you instead stop working at age 62, your actual benefit when you finally start collecting could be less than the estimates they gave you. This is because your benefits are based upon the highest earning years in your work history. If some of the years used to compute your estimates are the assumed earnings between now and when you reach FRA and

if you instead have no earnings in those years, your actual benefit will be less than the estimate.

There is no simple percentage of reduction used when you have no earnings between age 62 and your FRA; rather, the standard 35 year benefit calculation formula is used. That formula takes your highest earning 35 years to arrive at your Average Indexed Monthly Earnings and then computes your benefit amount from that average. Since most people have their highest earnings in the latter years of their working career, continuing to work up to the point of collecting Social Security is often a good strategy because those higher earning years will be included in the benefit computation. (It’s possible, but not usual, to have all of your highest earning 35 years earlier in your career, in which case stopping work at age 62 would not affect your FRA benefit).

So in your specific case, since you wish to stop working at age 62 and delay Social Security until you have reached your full retirement age of 66 + 4 months, I suggest you first get your earnings statement from your Social Security account and review your earnings history (remember that your prior earnings will be adjusted for inflation before computing your benefit). From your earnings statement, determine if your 35 highest earning years will have already been at-

tained by the time you are 62. If they have, your benefit when you apply at FRA should be close to the estimate; if they have not, and you stop working, your benefit at FRA will be a little less than the estimate. Keep in mind that your actual benefit amount will not be final until you actually apply. Note too that Social Security will start adding COLA to your estimated benefit amount once you reach 62 years of age even though you are not yet collecting, which means you’ll get those COLA increases when you finally apply for benefits at FRA. Senior News Line Medicare open enrollment brings the scammers out in full force. This is the time of year (until Dec. 7) to decide whether to keep your current Medicare plan or make changes to it.

Even though the deadline for making changes might have ended by the time you read this, scammers have all kinds of tricks up their sleeves: ￭ They might try to tell you that open enrollment runs through the end of December. ￭ Thieves might say that new cards will be coming with a new number (that part is true), but that you have to pay for the new card (that part is a lie). The card is free. ￭ They might claim to be from Medicare and say that you won’t get your new card until you can verify the number on your existing card.

They’ll expect you to read them all that information over the phone. ￭ If you pay your premium with automatic Easy Pay, scammers might try to tell you that your banking information has to be entered into the system because of the new card, and that you need to give them your bank information again. If you don’t, they might say, your payment won’t go through and you’ll be late and you might even have your Medicare cut off.

If you get any phone calls with people telling you things like this, HANG UP. They are scammers, calling to get you to disclose your personal information.

One other warning: Your caller ID is no longer accurate. Scammers have figured out how to make any number show up, even your local hospital or the Medicare office. They might be in a foreign country and make your caller ID look like they’re calling from next door. Beware, and be very careful.

The Evolution Of The Mall

How Westfield has brought culture and cuisine into the shopping experience

By Alison Elsner The old fashioned shopping mall that many of us remember from decades ago has certainly evolved with the generations. Of course, “the mall” is still a predictable hang out for teens to some extent, and it still provides a safe and dry indoor route for walkers. But the retail centers don’t look quite like they did in the movie “Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” where kids would flirt and frolic at the pizza counter before catching a flick. In order to stay relevant, and in some cases to ensure survival, today’s malls have had to develop ways to combat the mass societal transition to the convenience, control and inventory of online sales.

Westfield Palm Desert has demonstrated its ability to be flexible and innovative in accommodating people’s more modern requirements for culture and wellness as part of the overall shopping and dining experience. Sure, the food court still exists, but even that has undergone some

adjustments both in branding and in composition. Westfield now has what is called a dining court, and, although Sbarro is still there (let’s face it – it’s delicious), there are additions like Burgerim, which features gourmet mini burgers in numerous combinations, with Wagyu, merguez, salmon, chorizo and an array of buns and toppings. Another new dining court addition is LemonShark Poké which specializes in healthy and fresh “create your own” bowls with meat or tofu, veges, toppings and sauce.

As for the full service restaurants in the “mall,” they are relatively upscale and barely resemble the mediocre establishments of yesteryear. Two of the most popular are Stuft Pizza Bar and Grill and Bobby Mao’s Chinese Kitchen and Bar, offering generous food entrees, top rated and trendy food, impressive service (especially considering the constant presence of Yelp and TripAdvisor), a separate cocktail bar and contemporary, colorful décor.

There’s an emphasis on art with the Westfield Walls project, where over a dozen artists have brought public art to life. The walls of the third level parking deck as well as several interior walls are home to nearly 40 murals created by renown graffiti artists and painters. The second level also houses Art Is, Inc., a non-profit gallery founded by highly regarded Coachella Valley artist Angela Valente Romeo, whose original gallery, Colliding Worlds, is based in Cathedral City. Through Art Is, Romeo not only provides a display platform for local mid-level artists but also will soon offer acrylic painting and basket weaving classes to promote interactive art encounters for customers.

There will also be a book fair coming in to the space with a featured author every Thursday.

Tristone Palm Desert 10 Cinemas is considered an art-house movie theater, showing independent and critically-acclaimed and classic films from across the globe as well as advance screenings and special events.

Current and upcoming top name movies include the classic Agatha Christie thriller “Murder on the Orient Express,” the British biographical war drama film “The Darkest Hour” and “Wonder Wheel” by Woody Allen.

Westfield has also incorporated a slew of special events, geared for different ages and interests, into its identity, with several planned for the holidays. Coming up on Wednesday, December 6, from 6:00 – 8:00pm, pet owners (and/or admirers) are invited to “Santa Paws” to bring their fourlegged friends for a special photo event with Santa, craft-making and treats for the pups.

On Tuesday, December 12, from 4:00 – 6:00pm, Temple Sinai’s “Festival of Lights” will take place as an annual celebration on the first night of Hanukah. The free event, open to the public, will feature hot latkes from Sherman’s Deli, hot cocoa and coffee drinks from Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, holiday music and performances by the Temple Sinai Children’s Choir, crafts, gelt and more.

The “Palm Springs Cruisin’ Association Classic Car Show” is a recurring event, held every Saturday through May 5, 2018, from 1:00 – 5:00pm.

This show displays over 200 vintage rides and has refreshments, entertainment, raffle prizes and giveaways in the parking lot behind Westfield near An American Car Wash. Admission is free for spectators, and a $5 vehicle fee supports the Desert Cancer Foundation.

All of these appealing shops, high quality restaurants, creative happenings and their associated strategies aimed at both residents and visitors have been highly effective at holding firm against the torrential internet shopping phenomenon. As we know, physically drawing consumers into the brick and mortar stores is often the magic bullet for businesses to cross the necessary sales thresholds to stay in the black for the retail year.

Shopping at Westfield remains a preferable option for store owners as well as shoppers who see it as a way to bask in the full sensory experience of the holiday season and beyond.

I pick out a bowl and place a layer of moist, vegetable-studded dressing, green beans or cabbage, corn, a slice of turkey and a dollop of cranberry sauce. I warm up my “Turkey Bowl” in the microwave and enjoy a few moments of solitude before everyone else wakes up.

I like using the leftovers from our Thanksgiving dinner as a delicious foundation for a flavorful breakfast.

Most of the ingredients from a traditional Thanksgiving dinner can be transformed into a hearty breakfast – with a few tweaks.

Try these recipes for Thanksgiving Breakfast Hash on Mashed Potato Cakes and Turkey and Dressing Frittata, and let the feasting continue!

Thanksgiving Breakfast Hash ￭ 1 cup leftover mashed potatoes, at room temperature ￭ 1 large egg, plus 4 for frying ￭ 1/4 cup milk ￭ 1/3 cup all-purpose flour ￭ 1 tablespoon poultry seasoning ￭ 1 teaspoon salt ￭ 1 teaspoon ground black pepper ￭ 5 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil ￭ 1/2 small onion, chopped

￭ 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped ￭ 1 small red bell pepper, stemmed, seeded and chopped ￭ 8 ounces diced leftover turkey meat, about 2 cups ￭ 1/2 cup leftover turkey gravy ￭ 1/4 cup leftover cooked corn kernels ￭ 3 green onions, roots removed, white and green parts diced Heat the oven to 200 F. In a bowl, mix the potatoes, egg and milk together until combined.

Add the flour, poultry seasoning, salt and pepper, and mix until smooth.

Heat 2 teaspoons of the oil in a large, non-stick skillet over medium heat.

Pour about 1/3 cup of the batter into the skillet.

Gently spread the batter into a circle about 4-inches wide, and cook, flipping once, until golden brown, 3-4 minutes per side. Transfer to the oven to keep warm. Repeat with remaining batter.

Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in the skillet over medium-low heat. Add the onion and garlic and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the red pepper and cook until softened, about 4 minutes more. Add the turkey, gravy and corn and cook, stirring, until turkey is heated through.

Season hash with salt and pepper.

Pour into a bowl, cover with foil and set aside.

Heat the remaining teaspoon of oil into the skillet over medium-high heat. Crack the eggs onto the skillet and cook until desired doneness.

To serve, put a warm mashed potato cake on each of 4 plates; top the cakes with even amounts of the turkey hash and top with the fried egg and sprinkle with the green onions.

Serves 6.

Turkey And Dressing Frittata ￭ ￭ ￭ ￭ ￭ ￭ ￭ ￭ ￭

2 tablespoons olive oil 2 cups leftover stuffing 1 cup of diced leftover turkey 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese 8 large eggs 3/4 cup milk 1 tablespoon poultry seasoning 1/8 teaspoon red pepper flakes 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan 1/4 cup chopped parsley, optional

Heat oven to 400 F. Place the olive oil in a non-stick skillet and turn heat to medium high.

Mix stuffing and turkey in a bowl, then put mixture in the bottom of pan to warm through. Sprinkle grated cheddar cheese over top.

In a medium bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, poultry seasoning, red pepper flakes, nutmeg and the salt and pepper. Pour egg mixture over stuffing and cheese, making sure to cover the stuffing. Sprinkle Parmesan over top.

Carefully transfer to preheated oven. Bake until the eggs are set and the sides have puffed up a little bit, and cheese is golden, about 15 to 20 minutes.

Cool before cutting. Sprinkle with fresh parsley, if desired.

Holiday Giving Tree Gifts for Needy Seniors on the Meals on Wheels Program For the 13th year, we have once again put up our Holiday Giving Tree in the lobby of the Mizell Senior Center. Seniors from our Meals on Wheels program who will be home alone on Christmas Day will be the recipients of the gifts.

All you have to do is come into the Senior Center, select a name off the tree, then buy the gifts on their wish list. Wrap the gifts and bring them to the Center by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, December 15th. Volunteers will then deliver the gifts on Christmas

Pet of the Week “Pet Rescue” Hi, everyone! My name is Mimsey and I was wandering the streets and a very kind person brought me to Pet Rescue. I was so shy and fearful when I first arrived that it was thought I was abused by someone. I didn’t really like people and wouldn’t go up to them. I wasn’t aggressive or anything–I just didn’t trust anyone and I cowered away.

But because of all the love and patience I’ve received at Pet Rescue, I made a wonderful turn-around! I like people, Mimsey: Adult, children, and other dogs! Oh–by the way–I’m about 6 years old and I weigh about 25 pounds. As you can see, my Male, Terrier coat is a medium-length black and white.

I have to tell you it that it feels so good being hugged and petted that I don’t want it to stop! Everyone is so proud of me that I made such a change–they are also proud that I keep my “condo” clean. Life is good! The only thing that would make my life better is when I find my forever home. I keep wishing upon the brightest star that someone will look into my eyes and see what a sweet boy I am. I’m hoping my special person will adopt me and love me furever and ever. December First Weekend Features Take Me Home Huey, Coffee in the Park, Art Walk and Holiday Concerts Palm Desert First Weekend is packed full of fun activities for the whole family December 1-3, 2017. Kicking off the weekend with “Celebrate the Season” on Friday, December 1 on El Paseo, First Weekend continues with three days full of art, culture, and music with everything from the famed Take Me Home Huey exhibition to El Paseo Art Walk to the free Sunday Sounds Concert and more. Free pictures with Santa Claus, strolling carolers, hot cider and cocoa, and fun children’s activities led by the Palm Desert Youth Committee will add to the festive spirit.

Palm Desert is honored to feature Steve Maloney’s mixed-media sculpture Take Me Home Huey during December’s First Weekend events.

Take Me Home Huey is composed of a transformed boneyard U.S. Army Huey helicopter that served as an air ambulance during the Vietnam War. The 47-foot-long art sculpture is ac-

companied by a commissioned song, a documentary film, an exhibition, and an educational website. The artwork will be available for viewing Friday-Sunday at Freedom Park in Palm Desert. Programming on Saturday, December 2 will begin at 1:00 p.m. with an opening ceremony that will include a Color Guard presentation, welcome from Mayor Jan Harnik and the artist, among others. The ceremony will be followed by an event that will include Veterans/military organizations, arts organizations, food, activities for kids provided by the Desert Recreation District, and more. The event will end at 4:30 p.m. and at 5:00 p.m., there will be a screening of the Take Me Home Huey documentary which chronicles the history of the helicopter and its transformation into a work of art.
