continued from 3 superior longevity. In those days, comp shingles were rated at 15 to 20 years, while wood shakes could last for more than 30 years. Today’s comp shingles are commonly rated at 40 years, and some are even warrantied for 50 years. This means that comp shingles will outlast wood shakes at a considerably lower price. On the basis of cost and durability, it is hard to understand why anyone would prefer wooden roofing, except for the sake of aesthetic appearance. 4) If the aesthetic appearance of wood shakes is an important consideration, there are several kinds of tile roofing that are manufactured to look identical to wood shakes or shingles.

5) If higher cost for a

new roof is not a determining factor, the best choices for a long-lasting roof would be cement tiles, slate tiles, metal tiles, and metal panels. These roof types can last indefinitely, when properly installed. They also have the highest fire-safety ratings of any roofing materials, and their fire-resistant properties, unlike treated wood, do not depreciate with the passage of time. In the West Coast community where I inspect homes and commercial buildings, it has been more than 20 years since I’ve seen a newly-installed wood shake or wood shingle roof. From the perspective of usage in this area, wooden roofing appears to be a relic of the past.

If the primary objective is fire safety, why would we choose chemically-treated wood rather than cement or metal roofing? Metal and cement are far safer than wood when exposed to fire, especially when compared to wood shakes that are 25 years old and are no longer as fire-safe as when they were originally treated with fire retardant. Given the choices in today’s marketplace, with roofing materials that are safer, longer-lasting, and in some cases less costly, why would anyone opt for wood shakes or wood shingles?
