2017 Celebrity Tree Lighter Pulls Switch Sunday, December 3 Award-winning actor, writer, singer, spokesperson and photographer, Shari Belafonte, serves as this year’s celebrity tree lighter for the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway’s Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony. Festivities begin at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, December 3 at the Tram’s Mountain Station kicking off with a holiday performance by the Palm Springs High School Madrigals and String Quartet. Then Belafonte lights the Tram’s landmark 45-foot tree comprised of 4,000 LED lights, which can be seen throughout the Coachella Valley.

Belafonte’s first acting credit of note was co-starring with Marc Singer in the movie If You Could See What I

Hear, about blind musician, Tom Sullivan. She then went on to co-star in the popular Aaron Spelling series, Hotel. That led to numerous gueststarring roles in television sit-coms, dramas and feature films, along with several commercial assignments, including Calvin Klein, Lawrys, SlimFast, MasterCard and Diet Coke.

Among her hundreds of magazine covers—five times on Vogue alone— she was the first woman of color to appear on the covers of Self Magazine, Los Angeles Magazine and numerous foreign magazines.

Shari is actively involved with The Lili Claire Foundation for children and their families who suffer with

neuro-genetic birth conditions such as William Syndrome, Down Syndrome, Fragile X and Autism, and still does special events for The American Cancer Society (her famous father had been diagnosed with prostate cancer a few years back.) She is also an avid wildlife and no-kill animal advocate.

Along with her husband, actor and director Sam Behrens, Shari lives near Simi Valley on a 6-acre hillside ranch.

By JoAnn Derson • Since you know it’s coming anyway, take the opportunity to clean out the fridge a day or two before a big family dinner. It’s a good idea to eat up any leftovers for dinner the day before. You’ll have plenty to replace them on Thanksgiving, right?

• In the fridge, it takes 24 hours of defrosting for every 5 pounds of turkey. When defrosting in water (only birds in a leakproof plastic wrapper), allow 30 minutes per pound and change the water every half-hour.

• “When setting the table, my mom would put note cards face down under the place mats. On the note card was written an after-dinner, but beforedessert chore. Someone would be responsible for packing up leftovers; another would load dishes and flatware into the dishwasher; still another would wash or dry the servingware, and pots and pans. We all chipped in, and it was fair, since it was based on where you sat. She changed them every year. Social Security Matters

“Ask Rusty” - Survivors Benefit vs. Retirement Benefit Dear Rusty: I am a 58-year-old widow, born in 1958. My husband, born in 1953, was collecting Social Security Disability benefits when he died, worked throughout his lifetime and had earned enough credits to be eligible for regular Social Security benefits had he lived long enough. I know I can start collecting survivor’s benefits at age 60, but I’m not sure if that’s smart because I’d like to keep working and I’m not sure if working would affect my widow’s benefits.

I should also mention that I don’t have the full 35 years working that Social Security uses to calculate my own retirement benefit amount, so I’m unclear about when or whether to consider switching from survivor’s benefits to benefits based on my own work record. Please help me figure out the best way forward. Signed: A Survivor Dear Survivor: You already know that you’re not eligible for survivor’s benefits until you are 60 years old, and your plan to continue working after that does, indeed, add a wrinkle. While you will be eligible to begin survivor’s benefits at age 60, the benefit you receive will be reduced to 71.5% of what you would receive if you wait until your widow’s full retirement age (FRA). Note too that as a widow, your full retirement age is 4 months earlier than the normal FRA for someone born in 1958 - 66

years and 4 months vs. 66 years and 8 months for the normal.

In the immediate future I suggest you focus on eliminating some of those zero-salary years in your 35 year work record because they will reduce the Social Security benefit you will be entitled to. You said you want to continue working, and for each year you work now one of those zero years will be eliminated and your benefit amount from your own work record will increase. If working provides enough money to keep you financially comfortable, then delaying the start of your survivor’s benefit beyond age 60 will improve the reduction factor by about 4.5% for each year you delay, up to your FRA. The actual amount of your survivor’s benefit will be based upon your deceased husband’s primary insurance amount (the amount of benefit he would have been entitled to at his full retirement age) and the age at which you apply for survivor’s benefits. Even if you are still working, there’s no advantage to waiting beyond your FRA to start survivor’s benefits because the maximum survivor’s benefit is reached at FRA. Whenever you apply for your survivor’s benefit you will need to apply in person at your Social Security office, and you should be specific that you are applying only for survivor’s benefits, not your benefits based on your own work record.

If you choose to start collect-

ing survivor’s benefits early and continue to work, Social Security’s “earnings test” could affect your benefit. Except for the year in which you attain your FRA, Social Security will take back $1 for every $2 you earn above their annual earnings limit, which for 2017 is $16,920.

Unlike survivor’s benefits which stop growing at FRA, the benefit available from your own work record will continue to increase if you wait beyond your full retirement age to start collecting it. In fact, your benefits from your own work record will increase by about 8% for each year you delay beyond your FRA, until you reach the maximum at age 70. A prudent approach might be to continue collecting your survivor’s benefits until some years past your FRA (but not later than 70) and allowing your benefit from your own work record to grow. Provided your own benefit is larger than your survivor’s benefit, you can then switch over to the higher benefit. In any case, do not wait past your FRA to start your survivor’s benefit, nor after age 70 to start your own retirement benefits.

Thanksgiving Weekend Activities

This year the festivities feature a herd of life-size, luminescent animal lanterns and newly added pathways accented by holiday lights along with the popular tunnel of lights and holiday music. Free with paid admission, guests can catch a glimpse of Santa’s reindeer, and there will be a select number of reindeer photo and feeding opportunities. Animal encounters and keeper chats will be offered as well as arts and crafts, visits with Santa, camel and carousel rides and, yes, delicious food and drink.

Children and adults will appreciate the elaborate G-scale model trains with more than 3,300 feet of track, all decked out for the holidays. $10 adults, $8 children, free under 3.

This special observance maintains a strong connection to its origins - a feast to celebrate the abundance of past and future harvests. For those of us fortunate enough to have plentiful availability of food and drink, albeit obtained from the grocery stores instead of the fields, the day of thanks has turned into a long weekend of overindulgence or at least abandonment of calorie restrictions. (Turducken may be taking the gluttony a bit too far).

There are ways to recalibrate the scale, so to speak, away from lethargy and more towards movement by incorporating activities into our Thanksgiving weekend schedules, whether physical, educational or simply enjoyable (in addition to watching football or shopping Black Friday sales, of course). The Coachella Valley and surrounding regions offer a multitude of happenings for kids, adults and families, including a few geared for those anxious to plunge into the Santa spirit.

Here are some suggested ways to motivate over Turkey Day weekend:

November 23 – 26: Thanksgiving Weekend at the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway To keep dining on

the itinerary, the Palm Springs Tram will offer Ride ‘N Dine tickets starting at 8:00am which include Tram admission and dinner at Pines Café from 11:00am until 8:30pm ($36 for adults, $23.50 for kids ages 3-10).

The more upscale Peaks Restaurant will serve its regular menu along with traditional holiday favorites at 11:00am (tram fare separate).

Throughout the rest of the weekend, the Tram will operate a special schedule with tram cars going up at 8:00am and the last tram car returning down the hill at 9:45pm each evening.

The Palm Springs Tramway is the world’s largest rotating tram car.

The two 80-passenger cars travel along the breathtaking cliffs of Chino Canyon from the Valley Station at 2,643 feet to the Mountain Station (elevation 8,516 ft.) in 12 minutes.

Through January 7: SkyPark at Santa’s Village in Lake Arrowhead Santa’s Village is a 153acre, North Pole-themed outdoor adventure park nestled deep in the

Lake Arrowhead forest. Visitors experience hiking trails, biking, fishing and outdoor attractions with a zipline and climbing tower, all in a historic log cabin village. This holiday season, the park has been transformed into a winter wonderland with Santa’s house and workshop, ice skating, the Polar Express train ride, Blitzen’s Bungee, Frozen Falls, live music from the Mistletones, tree lightings and interactive storytelling throughout the park with the Northwoods Characters. Santa’s Elves will be holding special crafting workshops and cookie decorating classes for those waxing creative. Through January 14: Rink @ The River presented by Renova Energy It was such a hit last year that Renova has brought the skating scene back to the desert to get everyone ready for the holidays from 12:00pm – 10:00pm daily. The skating rink is set up over the central water feature in the outdoor shopping center, and guests of every age are welcome to skate ($15 per person, includes skate rentals) or just spectate for free. On November 30, there will be a Christmas tree lighting and an appearance by Santa. The Rancho Mirage High School Choir will perform Christmas carols, followed by the Holiday Spectacular on Ice, with a performance from 80-yearold skating legend Richard Dwyer, known as “Mr. Debonair,” a former member of both the Ice Follies and Ice Capades and a member of the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame.

If you’ve reached the age where you can collect Social Security and keep working without any reduction in your benefits, at some point you’re going to wonder: When is it safe to retire? Before you let go of that paycheck, do a trial run.

Try to live for a period of time (at least six months) on just an amount that would equal your Social Security income should you retire. Use the rest of your work income to pay off all your bills and put some money aside.

To determine if Social Security will be enough, save every receipt and make a list of every single cent you spend. At the end of each month, divide your expenses into categories such as Basics, Fun, Needs, Wants or whatever applies to your lifestyle.

Your Social Security should at least pay for basic monthly bills and medical care. Here’s how to get started: ￭ Calculate which parts of your lifestyle you’ll be able to continue. Club membership with dues?

Movies twice a month with lunch afterward? Investigate free activities and events in your area. ￭ Figure a monthly plan for your utilities. Take your last year of bills and divide by twelve to determine your monthly cost. ￭ Is your vehicle paid for? How about your cellphone? Pay them off with your work money. ￭ If you switch high-interest-rate credit cards to zero interest, how quickly can you pay off the balances? ￭ Investigate free services that are available to low-income seniors. ￭ Do you have enough clothing for the next year? Include winter gear and shoes, which can be big-ticket items. While you’re practicing living on only Social Security, stock up.

Turkey Day Disaster?

Keep Calm and Read On

After 35 years of cooking, I’ve had my share of Thanksgiving Day disasters!

Here are some secrets to saving your sanity and your Thanksgiving dinner: How To Defrost A Turkey You’ll need at least 24 to 48 hours (about five hours per pound) to thaw a frozen turkey in the refrigerator. If you need to do a quick thaw, place the wrapped, frozen turkey in your kitchen sink or a large container like an ice chest. Cover the turkey with cold water. Drain and refill the water every half-hour because as the bird thaws out, the water will get warmer.

Using this method, the turkey will thaw at the rate of about a half-hour for each pound.

Preparing The Bird Remove the giblet package (neck, livers, heart and gizzards) from inside the cavity of the bird AND check the neck cavity. Some manufacturers place the giblet package in the neck cavity and others place it inside the cavity closest to the legs.

Most turkeys come with the legs already trussed (crossed and secured with a metal or plastic bracket). If you’re not going to stuff your bird, there’s no need to truss the legs.

Trussing an unstuffed bird hinders the hot oven air from circulating inside and around the legs. This means that the dark meat will take longer to

cook and the breast meat will cook faster and probably dry out before the legs ever get completely done.

The Turkey Isn’t Done Don’t rely on the “pop-up” timer in the turkey, as it usually means that the breast is overcooked and the dark meat isn’t done. If the dark meat isn’t done, remove the wings and breast meat from the rest of the turkey, in one piece, if possible. Cover the breast and wing portion with foil and set it aside. Put the drumsticks and thigh portion of the turkey back into the oven to continue cooking until done.

You can re-assemble the whole turkey and garnish it, or just cut it into serving portions and arrange it on a platter.

Stuffing Savers If the stuffing/dressing is too wet, spread it out in a thin layer on a sheet pan so that it will dry quickly. Place it back into the oven for 5-7 minutes.

If it’s too dry, add more pan drippings or chicken broth to the mixture. If you don’t have any more drippings or broth, combine a chicken bouillon cube (if you have one), along with a

Soupy Mashed Potatoes Add unseasoned dry breadcrumbs to soupy mashed potatoes to absorb any excess liquid.

Gravy Rescue Tips If the gravy is lumpy, pour it through a strainer into a new pan and bring it to a simmer, stirring gently. If it’s too thin, mix a tablespoon of melted butter with a tablespoon of flour. Bring the gravy up to a boil and whisk in the butter mixture to thicken your gravy.

If the gravy is too thick, add a little more chicken broth, pan drippings or a little water and butter to thin it out.

Burnt Offerings If the turkey begins to burn while it’s roasting, flip the bird over immediately and continue to cook it. After the turkey is done, you can remove and discard any blackened skin and about half an inch of the meat below any burnt area.

Slice the remaining breast meat, arrange it on a platter and ladle gravy over it.

If your vegetables or gravy burn on the bottom, carefully remove the layer that isn’t burned into another pot or serving dish. DON’T SCRAPE THE BOTTOM OF THE PAN. If the dinner rolls are burned on the bottom, just cut off as much as you can, butter them, and fold them in half to cover the missing ends.

Soggy Pie Crust Sometimes, the top crust on a pie will cook faster than the bottom crust. If your bottom crust is underdone, cover the top with foil so it doesn’t burn and put your pie back in the oven at 425 to 450 degrees for about 12 minutes. Make sure to put it on the bottom rack so the underside gets the most heat.

Alternatively, you can scoop out the filling and top crust and just bake the bottom crust by itself. That way, when it’s done you can pour the filling back in and make a crumb topping from the top crust. It may even look better this way if your top crust didn’t turn out great the first time.

Whipped cream is the perfect “makeup” for desserts that aren’t quite up to par. You can cut the top layer off a burnt pie and cover it with whipped cream.

Hopefully, these tips will rescue you from any Thanksgiving Day disasters, but remember, it’s about gathering together to give thanks with the people you love -- not the perfect meal!

Legendary Singer/Songwriter Smokey Robinson returns to Fantasy Springs Resort Casino Friday, January 12, 2018 Smokey Robinson is a Motown legend.

From his beginnings as the founder and lead singer of The Miracles to his incredible solo career, he has made his mark on decades of American music and he will be returning to the Special Events Center at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino on Friday, January 12. Smokey Robinson is a renowned American R&B vocalist and producer with an eternally smooth and instantly recognizable high tenor voice that turned heads when he was the front man and founder of the Motown vocal group The Miracles.In 1960, The Miracles recorded Motown's first million selling hit, "Shop Around."

Between 1960 and 1970, Robinson would produce 26 Top 40 hits with The Miracles including several Top 10 hits such as "You've Really Got a Hold on Me" "I Second That Emotion" and the group's only number-one pop hit, "The Tears Of A Clown." Other notable hits include, "Ooo Baby Baby," and "The Tracks Of My Tears." Robinson was also one of the major songwriters and producers for Motown, penning several hit singles such as "My Guy," "The Way You Do The Things You Do," "My Girl" and "Get Ready." In 1975, Robinson released his most successful solo album, A Quiet Storm, which yielded three hit singles, "Baby That's Backatcha," "The Agony & The Ecstasy" and "Quiet Storm." His classic hit, "Cruisin" peaked at number four on the Billboard

Hot 100. Robinson topped the charts again with another sensual ballad, "Being with You" and teamed up with fellow Motown label mate Rick James for the R&B ballad, "Ebony Eyes". In 1987, Robinson made a triumphant return with the album, One Heartbeat and the top 10 hits, "Just to See Her" and "One Heartbeat." "Just To See Her" won Robinson his first Grammy Award.

In the same year, he was inducted as a solo artist to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the UK group ABC released a tribute song, "When Smokey Sings."

Smokey Robinson has been busy since then. In recent years, he released the standards album Timeless Love, Time Flies When You're Having Fun, Now And Then and Smokey & Friends.

Robinson has been inducted into the Kennedy Center, awarded an individual star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and was given a second star with The Miracles. He was awarded a medal at the National Medal of Arts, A Heritage Award at the Soul Train Music Awards and a BET Lifetime Achievement Award. Both Howard University and The Berklee College of Music conferred upon Robinson the degree of Doctor of Music.

Pet of the Week “Pet Rescue” Hello, everyone! My name is Fiona and I’m a female Poodle mix who’s about 2 years old. I weigh about 18 pounds. My coat is mostly gray with white underneath.

It had to be shaved Fiona: Poodle, because it was so unkempt and matted Young, Female when I first arrived at Pet Rescue. I’ll be a total knockout when my hair grows in! Even with a short cut, I still look stylish with my beautiful face and long legs. I could be a model on the doggie runway because I am tall, sleek, and elegant.

I was at another shelter when Christine saw me and brought me to Pet Rescue. There’s a saying that “eyes are the window to the soul.”

Christine looked into my eyes and knew I had a good soul. And I didn’t prove her wrong because I’m a sweet and gentle girl. I can be a little shy at first, but I warm up after I feel comfortable–especially if someone pets and cuddles with me.

Won’t you please come visit me and take me home? I like it here at Pet Rescue because I feel safe and well taken care of. But every rescue dog’s dream is to find their forever home where they are cherished and loved forever–I’m no different. I’d make a wonderful addition to your family. I get along with children and other dogs.
