Just before Thanksgiving, samples are eagerly tasted for sweetness and then long hours are spent hand-snipping each stem to bring in the first crop of the season for the Mountain Mandarin Festival. You will find fresh mandarins and unlimited samples at growers’ stands throughout the fairgrounds. Local growers offer fresh fruit, gift baskets, and a variety of fruit to taste. Throughout the Festival growers are offering fresh oranges that are chocolate dipped, locally produced mandarin syrups, marinades and salad dressings, fresh mandarin milkshakes, and gift packages available for holiday shipping.

Help for Heavy Loads and Sore Feet - Curbside Delivery! Since the beautiful Gold Country Fairgrounds sits in a hollow with parking areas a long walk up the hill, the Festival has arranged for transportation services to your car. A loading zone will be designated in the upper parking lot. The Boy Scouts will have a checkin booth near the Mandarin growers where they will hold the bags of mandarins until visitors are ready to leave. Donations will be accepted. Festival staff recommends that you purchase your bulk mandarins early in the day, drop them by the Boy Scouts delivery booth, and when you are ready, they will take your purchases to the parking lot.

Entertainment, Cooking Demonstrations, Fun for Kids Enjoy a great selection of live entertainment on three stages. Catch Flo the Clown, Karen Quest Cowgirl Tricks and Over the Top™ Stilt Characters plus hop aboard the the Mattress Firm train ride for a tour of the Festival. Be amazed by Jordan the Science Wizard, enjoy live music, dance demos and the hilarious Sugar Plump Fairy pageant. On the Make It With Mandarins Cooking Stage in the Armory Building, you can learn tricks of the trade as cooks demonstrate using mandarin oranges, and samples from vendors are presented. For the kids is the Mini Mandarin Grove where there are inflatables and rides and pay one price activities. They may want to enter the Mandarin Peel & Eat Contest or the Funnel Cake and Corndog Eating Contests or the Horizon Charter School’s Mandarin Races. In the Mandarin Building #2 you can enjoy the art of Larry Hausen and 23 years of Festival posters on display. Free Flu Shots Saturday 12-5:00 and Sunday 12-4:00 It’s the time of year when doctors and health agencies are recommending that everyone get their flu shots for the upcoming flu season. Even grocery stores and drugstores are flooded with flyers and signs offering the injections for prices from $15-25. But the Placer County Health Department is offering FREE flu shots to visitors of the Mandarin Festival during regular hours on Saturday and Sunday, while supplies last. They will be given in the Mandarin Building #2 (formerly the Historical Museum). Take the time to experience all the Mountain Mandarin Festival brings to you. Protect Mountain Mandarins From a Dangerous Pest!

An insect called the Asian citrus psyllid was recently found in Placer County, putting citrus trees like our beloved Mountain Mandarins at risk. The pest can infect trees with a plant disease that kills citrus trees. The disease is known as Huanglongbing, HLB or citrus greening disease, and while it isn’t harmful to humans it kills citrus trees. There is no cure. The best way to save Mountain Mandarins and other citrus trees growing throughout the community is to stop this pest. Here’s what you can do to protect citrus trees: • Inspect your personal orange, lemon, mandarin or other citrus trees at home. Report suspicious pests to agriculture officials by calling 800-491-1899. • Do not transport citrus trees around the state. Never bring a plant from Southern California, or other states or countries, into Northern California. • Cooperate with agriculture officials scouting and treating for the Asian citrus psyllid.

Who Will Be Crowned Sugar Plump Fairy’s
Miss Juicy Mandarin?
The Little Miss Mandarin Pageant is held Saturday at 2:45 in the Little Red Barn. Outgoing young ladies from ages three to eighteen participate each year in talent, self-introduction and Mandarin fashion categories.
You will need to take a seat for the hilarious Miss Juicy Mandarin Pageant. Since 1997, The Sugar Plump Fairies have been delighting the Greater Auburn, California Area with their philanthropic antics. Through creativity, silliness, and “fun-raising,” the Sugar Plump Fairies seek to inspire the generosity of others to provide the youth of the Auburn area with greater access to the Arts, in all its forms. The Sugar Plump Fairies use performance art and creativity to support good works in the community. We believe that the arts can open minds, provide inspiration, connect people across cultural, racial, and class boundaries, and generally enhance the quality of life for individuals and our community. The pageant will be held at 2:30 pm Saturday on the Mandarin Main Stage.

There’s still time to enter the Kitchen Craft Make It With Mandarins recipe contest – entries are taken on Sunday, the day of the contest. With a $1700 set of Kitchen Craft cookware for Best of Show and $100 for top place in each category, the annual Recipe Contest just might be the recipe contest you want to win this year! The popular event draws 30-40 entries and the judging will be a don’t-miss activity at the annual Mountain Mandarin Festival, November 18-20, on the Mandarin Cooking Stage in the Armory Building. In addition, Snow’s Citrus Court will be offering a $100 bonus cash prize for a recipe using their Mandarin Dark Chocolate in a savory dish. Categories for main dishes, side dishes including preserves, and desserts are open to all ages. Dishes with completed entry forms and a typewritten recipe should be delivered to the Armory Building Cooking Stage between 11:00 and 12:00 p.m. on Sunday November 19. Be sure to allow time for parking and getting to the Armory Building as no late entries will be accepted. The community benefits from the Mandarin Festival The Festival supports the community in a number of ways and over the years has contributed over $500,000 back to the community. The Boy Scouts offer to deliver your bags of mandarins to your car, the Salvation Army will kick off their holiday bell-ringing season at the Festival. A portion of the proceeds will provide four $1250 scholarships from the Newcastle Area Business Association, and also supports Gold Country Fair & Event Center, the Alta Vista Charter School Parents Club, Buttons & Bows Square Dancers and more. The 2017 Scholarship winners were Joslynn Green – Whitney High School, Karly Hess – Del Oro High School, Marloe Mullins – Del Oro High School and Noah Ky – Del Oro High School. Each was awarded $1250 in scholarship money.

Mountain Mandarin growers host annual Orchard Days events Placer County mandarin orchards open for visitors
N
early 40 mandarin growers throughout Placer County make up the Mountain Mandarin Growers’ Association. Most MMGA member orchards welcome visitors daily during mandarin season, which typically runs from mid-November through the end of January. Visit their website at www.MountainMandarins.com for information about each grove, or simply follow the Mandarin Trail through the Sierra foothills towns of Penryn, Newcastle, Loomis, Lincoln and Auburn and see what treasures you’ll find. The first and third weekends in December, the MMGA puts on Orchard Days at member orchards throughout Placer County. Filled with down-on-thefarm family fun, the event features the sale of fresh mandarins and mandarin-based products along with crafters, artists, local wine and craft ale tasting, food, farm animals, hay rides, farm tours, breath-taking views, and fun for the whole family.
