Few in media have disparaged President Donald Trump more harshly than I have. But I and the rest of his critics need to be careful. If we want credibility, particularly with Trump always attacking us for “fake news,” we must be painstaking as we do our jobs, particularly when a story seems too grotesque to be true. A case in point is the controversy over the call he made to Myeshia Johnson, the grieving widow of Army Sgt. La David Johnson, one of four special operations troops killed by ISIS forces while on patrol in Niger.

Prodded by reporters at a White House news conference, Trump decided to make a sympathy call from the commander in chief. He reached Mrs. Johnson on her cellphone as she sat in a car with family members, along with Democratic Congresswoman Frederica Wilson, who happens to be a longtime friend. According to Rep. Wilson, the call did not go well, and Trump’s remark that “But you know he must’ve known what he signed up for” was insensitive to an extreme.

Sure enough, Trump went to Twitter to attack Rep. Wilson: “Democrat Congresswoman totally fabricated what I said to the wife of a soldier who died in action (and I have proof). Sad!” The proof he was referring to were subordinates who were listening in and could vouch for him. They included chief of staff John Kelly, the steely former Marine general who was brought in to bring order to a chaotic

White House. He also is the father of 1st Lt. Robert Kelly, who was killed in Afghanistan combat seven years ago.

Gen. Kelly has insisted since then that he keep his and his family’s agony private.

So imagine the surprise of reporters when he came to the briefing room to share his feelings of disgust. “I was stunned when I came to work yesterday, and brokenhearted, when I saw what a member of Congress was doing,” he said.

President Trump was echoing the words Kelly had described hearing from friends back in 2010 when he got the devastating news that his son died on the battlefield, words that provided a measure of comfort: “He was doing exactly what he wanted to do when he was killed” and “He knew what he was getting into by joining that 1 percent. He knew what the possibilities were, because we were at war.”

That, said Kelly, is exactly what his boss the president was trying to communicate to the Johnson family in their depths of sadness. Rep. Wilson’s dismissive comments afterward, that “John Kelly’s trying to keep his job,” seemed petty.

We in the media need to make sure we don’t appear petty. President Trump has bounced from one ugly controversy to another, and we have gotten used to his constant showers of brutishness -- so used to them, perhaps, that we now expect the worst each time we hear the words “Donald Trump.” We need to make sure that we aren’t lulled into the sense of outrage that so frequently defines the Trump presidency. This is a good example. Gen. Kelly’s raw wounds will never heal. Will Your Money Last Through Retirement?

Think you have your retirement financial planning well in hand? Well, a new study shows that you might be in for a rude surprise when the time comes. The American College New York Life Center for Retirement Income commissioned a survey of retirement income planning, and the results are disturbing. Only 35 percent of men passed the quiz; only 18 percent of women were able to.

The quiz covered a dozen different categories, and judging by the results, the topic of annuity products in retirement was the most difficult.

Women equaled men in the Medicare insurance planning section, with both getting 76 percent of answers correct. Women also bested men (just barely, at 38 percent versus 35 percent) in paying for long-term-care expenses.

The survey found the most glaring problem is that while many women know they’re not knowledgeable about retirement income planning, the majority still believe they’ll have enough money to live on. Why is that? Are women secretly depending on men to be on top of financial planning, answering on the quiz that they make joint decisions, while the men replied that they (the men) were actually the ones in charge?

There is one ray of hope in the survey: The majority of women believe that it’s important for their financial adviser to educate them ... while a minority of men responded that way.

Ladies, we live longer. If anyone should be more concerned about having enough money for a long retirement, it’s us. At the very least, we should know what our monthly retirement budget looks like.

Special screening of the 1937 film, “A Star is Born.”

UCR Palm Desert and the Palm Springs International Film Society are pleased to present a special 80th anniversary screening of the 1937 film, “A Star is Born.”

Directed by William Wellman, this was the first contemporary drama filmed in color, and it was rewarded by becoming one of the largest grossing pictures of the year with nominations for seven Academy Awards.

“A Star is Born” led to three remakes -- the Judy Garland musical version in 1954, Barbara Streisand’s in 1976, and now, in 2017, a third version directed by and starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga.

Following this screening of the original, William Wellman, Jr. will tell the full story of the creation of this classic project.

“Read With Me” needs volunteer tutors for participating schools Read with Me Volunteer Programs - a local nonprofit organization that provides volunteers to help tutor struggling children read in English – has new volunteer opportunities available for the 2017-18 school year.

Back in 2004, when founders Roberta and Clay Klein learned of underprivileged children from the east valley facing a future with poor reading skills, they started the nonprofit with one school and now, today, there are 12 local schools and one in Nevada. The Kleins knew that if a child is not reading by the third grade, he or she will more than likely not finish high school. When they drop out, they not only do not succeed, they often get into trouble and sadly many times wind up in prison.

An idea was born. Why not provide transportation for retirees to go to the overcrowded east valley schools and tutor those children who desperately needed help with English, grammar, pronunciation and reading skills. It worked like a charm. Now, more than 600 Read With Me volunteers are bussed weekly to twelve different schools in the Coachella Valley as far as 30 miles away. Every child in the program has the opportunity to develop to their maximum capacity.

The Read with Me volunteers commit to one to four hours a week working in the classroom under the direction of a teacher. The teacher in that classroom directs which children the volunteer is to work with and the materials to be used. Sometimes the volunteers work one on one and sometimes with a small

group. An orientation class is provided in November and again in January at each school. Training videos are available.

“What could be a more rewarding, joyful use of one’s time than helping a child learn to read, becoming fluent in English, and successful in life,” said Read with Me founder, Roberta Klein.

Currently, there are a total of 12 local elementary schools involved with the Read with Me volunteer program and services including Cathedral Elementary School, Jackson Elementary School, John Kelley Elementary, Las Palmitas Elementary, Mecca Elementary, Mountain Vista Elementary, Oasis Elementary, Palm View Elementary, Saul Martinez Elementary, Valley View Elementary, Van Buren Elementary and Valle Del Sol Elementary.

Schools that are currently short of volunteers to help tutor students are Oasis School in Thermal on Tuesdays, Valle del Sol Elementary School in Coachella, and Jackson Elementary School in Indio. There is a bus provided to take volunteers to the Oasis Elementary that leaves from the Costco parking lot in La Quinta on Jefferson Street every Tuesday and Thursday.

The Krispy Kreme Konvict is vindicated Daniel Rushing was arrested in Orlando, FL in 2015 for drug possession. A patrol officer stopped him for a traffic violation and searched his car finding what looked like crystal meth and so he was taken into custody. It took the police several weeks to discover that it wasn’t illegal methamphetamine that the officer found; it was the remains of a Krispy Cream doughnut, according to the Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC]. The white flakes on the floorboard were actually bits of

glaze that fell off of the doughnut as Rushing munched on the snack.

Rushing sued the city of Orlando for damages, claiming he could not get work after the incident because his arrest was made public. He won his case, settling for $37,500.

By Alison Elsner The grand opening may have been pushed back a couple of times, but that has only served to ratchet up the anticipation and suspense. Kimpton The Rowan Palm Springs is set to explode onto the Palm Springs downtown scene for real (we think) by the second half of November.

The long awaited jewel in the crown of the downtown Palm Springs revitalization project, albeit ensconced in the shadow of some back room financial deals made between developers and the City of Palm Springs’ former mayor, is nevertheless a property at the pinnacle of attention.

Bitsy is an adorable schnauzer/corgi mix, about 1 years old, 15 pounds, housebroken, spayed and ready to go to her new home.

By JoAnn Derson • Roll clothing to pack: For shirts, you can stack them all together, then fold over the sleeves before rolling. Pants are best rolled individually.

Fold one leg onto the other, then roll tightly from ankle to waist, being sure to smooth wrinkles as you go. Stuff socks into shoes. Make use of all your space.

• Trouble getting to sleep? Maybe you should try listening to soothing sounds. There are many to choose from, from white or pink noise (find it free on YouTube or get a CD from the library).

There’s even a podcast where a person reads a boring book in a monotone voice (Sleep with Me). You never know if it’ll help unless you try.

• Winter driver safety list! Check levels for the following: engine oil, coolant and antifreeze, as well as windshield wiper fluid (non-freezing), tire pressure and tread depth.

Social Security Matters

“Ask Rusty” - SSDI and the Ticket to Work Program Dear Rusty:I am 60 and currently getting Social Security Disability, but I would like to return to work as much as possible. I am concerned with how my earned income would affect my Social Security at age 65 (or even at age 70). I understand that Social Security has a “trial work” program that allows me to keep receiving disability for a while, to allow me to test my physical limits. I wish to make sure that my Social Security Disability does NOT automatically convert to the standard (early) benefit at age 62 (Ouch!). I read something about a 96 month period that is crucial. So many factors involved, so I wish to make the right decision. Signed: Wanting to Work While Disabled.

Dear Wanting: Social Security Disability Insurance, or SSDI, provides eligible disabled workers with a financial lifeline in return for the insurance premiums they’ve paid into the program during their working years. Although the criteria are stringent, once awarded the benefit provides income to partially replace earnings that are lost due to a long term disability. Social Security encourages those receiving SSDI benefits to eventually return to the workforce and offers a “Ticket to Work” program to help achieve that goal. This program gives you the chance to test your ability to work for at least nine “trial work

months” during a 60 month period, and during this trial work period you’ll receive your full SSDI benefit regardless of how much you earn. Briefly, any month you earn more than $840 (for 2017) counts as a trial work month. After you have reached nine trial work months, you can still receive your SSDI benefits for another 36 months, except that you won’t receive benefits for any month that your earnings exceed what Social Security considers “substantial”, which for 2017 is $1,170 (note that these dollar amounts can change annually). If your benefits stop because your earnings regularly exceed “substantial”, and within 5 years you are again unable to work due to your disability, your disability benefits can be restarted (without having to re-apply). You can get full details about the Ticket to Work program by going to https:// www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10095. pdf, but this program should allow you to work and test your physical limits without a negative impact to your Social Security benefits.

To address a few of your other concerns: Your earnings from attempting to return to work while disabled shouldn’t negatively affect your future Social Security retirement benefit at your full retirement age. Your disability benefits will not automatically convert to early retirement benefits at age 62, but they will automatically convert to retirement benefits when

you reach your full retirement age (which is 66 years plus 6 months if you were born in 1957). However when they convert, your benefit amount will remain the same as you were receiving in disability benefits. If you are on Medicare and your benefits stop as a result of exceeding the substantial earnings limit, as long as you are still disabled your free Medicare Part A coverage will continue for at least 93 months after the 9 month trial work period. However, you will still have to pay a Medicare Part B premium in order to receive Part B coverage.

Local Star to Perform Doris Day Tribute

“Everybody Loves Doris Day” at Arthur Newman Theater Local performer, Kristi King, will perform her acclaimed one-woman tribute show “Everybody Loves Doris Day” on Sunday, November 12, 2017 at 2 pm in the Arthur Newman Theater in Palm Desert. Joining Kristi is Dennis Michaels on piano.

“Everybody Loves Doris Day” will focus on Doris Day’s life and career from the early days as a big band singer, radio and recording artist, film actress, and television star. It features some of her most recognizable songs performed by Kristi King. Ms. King, who has uncannily perfected both Doris’ look and voice, has performed

versions of her show numerous times here in the desert as well as throughout Southern California, Hawaii, Las Vegas, and more. Singing since the age of 9 years old, Kristi, who performs weekly at several desert night clubs, is a very versatile singer and actress with a variety of shows she has helped develop and performs including, Country Girls, The Great American Songbook – The First Ladies of Song, and By Special Request. In addition, she is one of three ladies currently performing as The Sensational Jewels, who also perform different multithemed shows. For this performance,

Kristi will include additional instrumentation recorded live in a studio along with Dennis Michaels on piano, for a full orchestral effect, taking the audience’s experience to an even higher level.

Audience is encouraged to bring unopened wet or dry dog and cat food to be donated to Friends of the Palm Springs Animal Shelter’s Pet Food Bank.
