A month for mandarins LOCAL CITRUS RIPENS IN MID-NOVEMBER

t begins with fragrant blossoms in the spring.

By summer, small green orbs on the trees are growing. But it takes the chilly nights and crisp mornings of late October and early November to bring the Placer County Satsuma mandarin crop to perfection.

At Struble Ranch in Loomis, it’s a process that has been taking place for six decades — since owner Jim Struble’s father, Harold Struble, planted the first mandarin trees on the property in 1956.

“My father and three other growers got together and decided they would buy citrus because they needed something to do in retirement,” Jim Struble said.

The project started with 98 trees. Then in 1984, Jim Struble added an additional two acres of the fruit. These days, there are also Clementine mandarins, naval oranges and an assortment of other citrus.

The crops fluctuate — a bountiful harvest followed by a lighter crop the following year. “(It is based on) leaf to fruit ratio,” Struble said.

“We’re going to have a shorter crop this year. Last year was a heavy crop.”

He estimates the mandarins will be ready for harvest by mid-November.

“We hope to be in production around Nov. 15, but you can’t predict the weather,” he said. “It is about five days later than last year.”

Typically heavy-year crops ripen a little earlier.

Weather is a big factor in tree health and production.

“We’re coming off a four-year drought and we came into 2017 with a lot of water,” he said.

“When you come into a lot of water, the trees want to grow great because they have been suffering (during the drought years). (All that water) is good.

All of your fruiting comes on two-year-old wood.”

Three generations Ranching has been the family’s tradition since Marion Rufus Struble purchased the land in 1918. He came in Placer County from Indiana.

His son, Harold Struble, bought the property from him in 1934.

“It was a deciduous ranch at that time,” Jim Struble said about his grandfather’s land holdings. “There was no citrus then.”

During the first half of the 20th century, Placer County was dotted with thriving pear and stone fruit orchards. Bustling packing houses in the center of the small towns prepared the fruit for shipping throughout California and beyond. But the mid-century pear blight decimated the industry.

Since then, citrus — particularly Satsuma mandarins — has seen a steady growth throughout the area.

Jim Struble grew up on the family ranch and always dreamed of being a farmer.

“I wanted to (follow in my father’s footsteps), but he didn’t want me to,” Struble said. “So I got a degree and worked in the agriculture business.

Then I came up and took over the farm after (my parents were unable to run it.)”

He enjoys the life and the people he meets.

“I like to educate people about agriculture,” he said. “A lot of people here today aren’t the same people who were here yesterday. We talk about how we run the ranch and what it costs and the history behind it. People seem to be quite interested in that.”

He estimates his orchards produce about 17,000 pounds of citrus, which he sells at a farm stand on the property. His wife, Jan, makes and sells jam and several other products.

Jan Struble is also a barn quilt enthusiast and organized the very popular barn quilt trail in the Loomis Basin.

The new gold in Placer County California is growing on trees as the county has become known for their intensely flavored, sweet, mandarin 0ranges. The annual Mountain Mandarin Festival will celebrate 24 magical years in 2017 with the new crop of delicious, foothills-grown mandarin oranges. Placer County growers will sell thousands of pounds of fresh mandarin oranges and gift baskets, accompanied by all the free samples you like. Join in the fun with a mandarin recipe cooking contest, professional chef demonstrations, food, artisan crafts, and activities featuring the mandarin orange, a peel and eat contest, live music and entertainment.

The festival is held under the autumn-leaved trees of the Gold Country Fairgrounds. The tangy scent of citrus is in the air as visitors discover chocolate-covered fresh mandarins, mandarin pizza, or pulled pork, and English scones with mandarin curd. Visitors can take home mandarin barbecue sauces, syrups, olive oils, dressings and dozens of other mandarininspired concoctions..

Slow cooker mandarin meals

I

t may only be November, but with the holidays and all the hustle-and-bustle it seems these last few weeks of the year tend to breeze by in the blink of an eye. No one wants to waste a second slaving over a stove when the family is gathered around the fireplace sipping hot chocolate (yes, hot cocoa before dinner is totally acceptable during the holidays) or outside making large pillows of fallen leaves to jump into. A slow cooker or crock pot is a great way to ensure that a meal gets on the family dinner table without having to miss all the fun by being cooped up in the kitchen. This month I have picked three holiday friendly meals that can be made in the slow cooker, from sweet to savory, with the local seasonal ingredient: mandarin.

A

citrus twist on a holiday favorite beverage that takes no effort, but mulls in the kitchen for a few hours until ready for serving — hence mulled cider. One of my favorite things to do when the sweater weather kicks in is grab something warm to drink and curl up on the couch with a blanket and a good book. When hot chocolate just isn’t what I am craving and a cup of tea just isn’t sweet enough, this mandarin mulled cider is the perfect substitute. It has a good balance of sweet and tangy. Plus cooking it makes the home smell incredible with warm spices and sugary notes.

MANDARIN MULLED CIDER INGREDIENTS

INSTRUCTIONS

1 gallon of your favorite apple cider 2 teaspoons allspice 3 teaspoons cloves 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon 2 large pinches of nutmeg 4 mandarins sliced in half 1 lemon sliced in half 1 one-inch hunk of ginger cut into large chunks 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1. Place all ingredients into the crock pot.

2. Place heat on high for as long as two hours and then place on low or keep warm until ready for serving.

3. Serve and enjoy.

Note: You can strain through a sieve if you want to eliminate some of the floating fruit pieces and additional spices.

MANDARIN HOLIDAY PEACH COBBLER

L

iterally only four ingredients and you have a dessert that won’t be on the table for very long. In fact the last time I made this, I had to tell my husband to save me a piece knowing that as soon as it was on the table, a good portion of it would already be gone. A chorus of mmms and yums follow every bite and the effort level to make is this winner of a dessert is zero. Throw the ingredients in the crock pot and enjoy any occasion without missing any of the fun.

INGREDIENTS

1 cup sliced and peeled peaches 2 cup sliced and peeled mandarins 1 package of gluten-free yellow cake mix 1 stick of unsalted butter, melted INSTRUCTIONS

1. Slice and peel the peaches add mandarins and place in the bottom of the slow cooker. Note: Add more fruit to desired ratio.

2. Dump the contents of the cake mix into the slow cooker on top of the fruit.

3. Melt the stick of butter and pour evenly over the cake mix.

4. Cook on high for 2-3 hours or until the cake mix is no longer underdone.

5. Serve warm or cooled based on preference with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and enjoy.

weet and savory hams are often a staple at the holiday table along with turkey and several other roasts. Why not switch it up this year with a local twist on a classic favorite? Mandarin season is a big deal in Placer County and what better way to show our appreciation for the hard work these farmers do all year-round than utilizing their harvests on our thanksgiving tables this year?

INGREDIENTS

¼ cup packed dark brown sugar 2-3 sprigs of fresh rosemary Spiral cut ham (fully cooked and whatever size will fit in the crock pot) Glaze 1 cup fresh squeezed mandarin juice ½ cup packed light brown sugar ½ cup apricot jelly ¼ cup dijon mustard 3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar 3 cloves of garlic, minced 1 inch knob of minced ginger

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Place a small saucepan over medium heat and melt the apricot jelly.

2. Once melted, add the remaining ingredients of the glaze into the sauce pan until simmering.

Remove from heat.

3. Sprinkle the ¼ cup dark brown sugar onto the bottom of the crock pot.

4. Add the ham and then pour the glaze over the top and in each layer of the spirals.

5. Lastly, top with rosemary, cover with the lid of the crock pot and cook on low for 4 to 5 hours.

Thanksgiving kitchen essentials FROM SANDALWOOD HOUSE AND TESS’ KITCHEN STORE

L

et’s talk turkey. Thanksgiving, while it is supposed to be one of the more relaxing of holidays, it has admittedly become filled with the stress of preparing and the largest meal of the year. It truly takes an arsenal of gear just to pull it off smoothly.

The traditional dishes of turkey, potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie and so much more can be a lot to take on in a day. Not to mention the amount of food can be overwhelming for the average kitchen.

After speaking with Tess’ Kitchen Store in Grass Valley and Sandalwood House in Auburn, a conclusion has been made that having a list of necessities is of the utmost priority. There are too many things needed to host a Thanksgiving dinner without a hitch, but here are the top six kitchen essentials that both businesses had on their lists of must haves.

1. Roasting pans and racks This may seem like a basic necessity, but there are many factors that play a role when choosing a roasting pan and rack. Two important questions to ask before purchasing are: Is it sturdy and will my turkey fit? Roasting pans usually come in two sizes and can hold an average of 18 to 24 pounds.

“We will go through 20 to 30 roasting pans before thanksgiving,” said buyer for Tess’ Kitchen Store, Holly Hiscox. “There are typically two sizes, small and large. Most people don’t do more than a 24-pound turkey.”

Having a non-stick roasting rack is also an important feature.

“Having a non-stick roasting pan will actually protect the skin,” said owner of Sandalwood House, Carine Ooi-Hammer. “It does make a difference. It has to be sturdy.”

Too many times has a perfectly good turkey fallen on the floor due to lack of stability and room in the roasting pan.

“This is something you own once and don’t have to change it ever again,” Ooi-Hammer said.

2. Meat thermometer The second item on our list is an accurate meat thermometer. Many can now be left in while an out-of-oven monitor reads the temp. This lessens the need to continuously open and close the oven.

It is a critical tool in ensuring that the turkey does not dry out. A tip from Sandalwood House is to pull the turkey out just five degrees shy of the ideal temperature. Immediately cover it with

aluminum foil outside of the oven. This will help keep the moisture in while the heat radiating inside continues to cook it to perfection.

“You will have a moist turkey,” Ooi-Hammer said.

“If you don’t have a good meat thermometer, now is the time to buy one,” Steve Rosenthal said, Tess’ owner.

“People may need a new, good knife,” Rosenthal said.

A good carving set is always worth investing in for year-round cooking, not just on Thanksgiving, but it is especially important to have on this specific holiday occasion.

“In order to get that clean incision and cut, about nine to 10 inches is ideal,” Ooi-Hammer said.

If a knife is too short or too dull it can be like sawing the turkey rather than slicing a clean carve, whereas, if a knife is too long it can be unstable and almost sword-like.

“It has to be sharp,” she added.

“Thanksgiving is huge for us,” Hiscox said.

It is the time of year where people actively seek out certain cooking tools. Turkey is the typical main dish on the table and in order to cook it to perfection a turkey baster is a must.

“People are buying things specially for cooking,” Hiscox said. “People want to be festive.”

“Turkey basters are important if you want to make sure that it is moist,” Ooi-Hammer said. “It is a very important step.”

Without a turkey baster, the skin of the turkey will inevitably cook much faster than the inside; leaving the very probable chance of burning the outside while the inside is underdone. A baster helps keep the outside cool while the inside is still cooking and needs to be used multiple times during the cooking duration.

This handy tool is not as popular, but its function is instrumentally helpful in the process of making homemade gravy.

“It is definitely one of the most effective tools,” Ooi-Hammer said.

The name is indicative of its purpose which is to separate the fat from the flavorful juices the turkey will release in the oven.

Who needs store-bought gravy packs when making the real thing has now become so easy? It is definitely one of the musts on the list of tools for this year.

“It pays off in the long run,” said Ooi-Hammer. “You can pour off the juices without getting the fat in.”

Even just using the juice as an au jus is an acceptable application of the fat separator for those who aren’t the biggest fans of gravy.

Brining bag is one of the “musts” because of how much easier these little bags can help with the overall turkey-making process. A brining bag offers the easiest way to get great flavor into the turkey before its journey to the oven. Many will use a cooler or buckets to soak the birds, but with a brining bag, the turkey can remain in the fridge or the counter. Tess’ Kitchen also offers a brining mix for the big day.

“Having a brining bag is easy,” said Ooi-Hammer. “Brining bags give you more flexibility.”

Tips from Tess’ Kitchen Store 1. For a crispier skin, unwrap the thawed turkey the day before roasting and leave it uncovered in the refrigerator overnight.

2. Before cooking, pat the turkey dry with paper towels and rub the skin with olive oil or butter.

Season the bird with salt and pepper and put in a pre-heated, 475-degree oven for 20 minutes, and then turn the oven down to 325 degrees.

3. Remove the turkey from the oven when the oven thermometer reaches 165 degrees.

4. Let the turkey rest for a minimum of 20 minutes but up to an hour. Resting allows for the meat to re-absorb juices, and the oven is free for other uses.

here are many tips and tricks to make a Thanksgiving table just as picturesque as the food that inevitably stacks in dishes on top of it. Ideas on how to put together such a masterpiece for one of the most anticipated holidays of the year, may be found at Re-Find Living in Auburn.

When compiling her creation, owner of Re-Find Living Bobbi Eddy sought out to highlight the most noticeable features of fall.

“I love the colors and textures of fall and wanted to incorporate them into this tablescape,” Eddy said.

She utilizes the common fall colors of burgundy, cranberry red, rust orange and forest greens. Changing leaves and golden pinecones on the table give a natural/outdoor aspect and signs that say “harvest,” “blessed” and “thankful” help pull the entire presentation together.

“I think my favorite part when creating a tablescape is the layers,” Eddy said, “starting with the burlap charger, adding the dishes, re-purposing dip cups into a soup bowl, all of it making each setting look welcoming.”

Mixing and matching is all part of the fun when it comes to putting together the perfect table. It also simplifies the pressure of having all exact matching dishware. As long as there are utensils and plates on the table, your guests will be good to enjoy the meal without difficulty.

“I find the Mud Pie (brand) dishes so useful and just lend a beautiful look to your holiday table,” Eddy said.

Hanging old flannel shirts and plaid blankets over the backs of the chairs adds another level of warmth to the table and a cozy factor for guests.

“Start by gathering what you already own, whether it’s mismatched or sets, then look for a color theme. I usually pick three colors. Lately I’ve been loving green, brown and a creamy white,” Eddy said. “Once you’ve picked the colors, you have your look. By reshuffling your pieces and adding one or two new things, you can use the same basic pieces year after year without repeating your look.”

“C

ome eat, enjoy this wonderful meal, fellowship, relax and then you can go home and do whatever you like for the rest of the day,” said Salvation Army’s outreach coordinator, Angela Atteberry. “It’s quite the incredible dinner.”

Every year, Salvation Army of Auburn hosts a remarkable feast that is free to the public on Thanksgiving Day. “I’ve been coordinating it with the Salvation Army; this will be my 15th year,” Atteberry said. “It’s a process and it is one that has evolved.”

This will be her third year on staff as outreach coordinator whereas several years prior she helped out as a volunteer.

“I’ve got a lot of really good support and good help. One person doesn’t do this,” she said.

Although the dinner has been an event for many years, each time it gets bigger and bigger. The dinner began in the Sierra Building of the Gold Country Fairgrounds until they inevitably ran out of space.

“It became apparent that we didn’t have enough room,” Atteberry said. “We do invite the entire community and it was our intention to not only have the dinner but to have entertainment.”

The dinner begins in the late morning for early seating and continues throughout the early afternoon.

“We don’t like to hurry people. Fellowship and joy is such a huge part of this,” she said. “It really should be a relaxing time. We encourage people to have as much as they like.”

The dinner is served restaurant-style and members of the Auburn community are welcome to attends as guests.

Those who attend will be greeted and seated. A server will then bring over their dinner plates filled with traditional favorites and beautifully made-from-scratch food. Some volunteers are greeters, some escort guests to their tables and others are hospitality captains that monitor each table’s needs.

“They want to make sure everyone’s needs are met just like at a restaurant,” Atteberry said.

Last year alone more than 1,000 meals were served and that is not counting the 350 meals served with Meals on Wheels. People are welcome to take food home as well.

For those who work on Thanksgiving, they are also taken care of with a meal.

“I insist that we feed our emergency services,” Atteberry said. “I encourage anyone who knows of someone who can’t get out on that day to please give me their contact information.

“Ultimately it is our hope that we run out of food. We want to be able to serve so much that I don’t have anything left over because it is prepared food.”

Every year there are several hundred members of the community who volunteer their time and holiday to serve others. Volunteers come as early as 5:30 a.m. and some begin the day before to do necessary prep.

“It’s the volunteers that makes this happen,” she said.

“There’s always something to do.”

Five ovens cook the multitudes of freshly prepared food.

The menu consists of all the favorites: turkey, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, organic veggie medley, cranberry sauce whole and jelly, Jello, rolls and more.

“This is not your basic TV dinner,” Atteberry said. “I buy all organic frozen vegetables (and we) can’t forget the deviled eggs.”

Fifty-pound sacks of potatoes, pounds of real butter and around 65 turkeys from Longhorn Meat Co. are just a small portion of the multitude of food items needed to put on this event.

“All the spuds are made from scratch,” Atteberry said. “(There’s) lots of butter, real butter. The pies and desserts get donated from the community.”

Atteberry keeps an ever-growing shopping list on what food is needed to put this large event on.

“It’s our way of thanking the community for all the incredible support we (Salvation Army) get throughout the year,” Atteberry said.

ovember seems to be the month of eating delicious meals and talking about all things food. The days are filled with warm meals and it is very appropriate that one of the most popular dishes is called stuffing. Filling stomachs with good food is tradition this holiday month. However, for some, Thanksgiving doesn’t happen at home, but rather out on the town among friends. Dingus McGee’s puts on quite the buffet of traditional treats in harvest celebration.

“It is cram packed,” said owner, Danielle Nelson.

While their very popular alligator nuggets will not be on the menu the day of, their buffet menu is overflowing with turkey, ham, prime rib, salmon and several side dishes such as green beans, assorted seasonal veggies and two different kinds of stuffing. There will also be sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, harvest gravy and a variety of pies and desserts.

“Pretty much all the traditional things you could think of,” Nelson said.

No one will leave on an empty stomach.

“It’s really fun,” she said.

Seating will begin at 12:30 p.m. and service will continue until 6 p.m. A reservation is required and spots fill up quickly.

Husband-and-wife duo, Dave and Danielle Nelson, opened the location in Auburn six years ago. Danielle worked for the original owners in Colfax from 1985 to 1989 as a waitress.

“I enjoyed the atmosphere. I liked the vibe of it,” Nelson said.

When she heard the rumor that they were selling, she didn’t want to miss out on the opportunity. The restaurant was purchased in 1997 and it stayed open until 2002. After giving up on finding a new location for Dingus McGee’s and following other food industry endeavors, the Nelson family abandoned the idea. That is until the building in Auburn became available.

“There is not a better fit that we could think of,” she said. “It’s a good fit in Auburn.”

It was the end of 2011 when they opened the doors again with a lot of the same charm of the original Dingus McGee’s plus some upgrades.

A new wrap-around deck was built along with an event center that was converted from the previous tenant’s old butcher shop side building.

“We have pushed outdoors as an extension of our space,” Nelson said. “We gutted that building and turned it into the event center. It’s nice because we have a dedicated party space.”

Sitting outside and enjoying the Northern California sunshine is very popular during the spring and summer with a few nice days extending into fall.

Nowadays the restaurant is classified as new American steakhouse; however it used to have more of a Cajun feel.

The original owners went to New Orleans in 1983 and when they returned added a Cajun flair to the menu that has since been reinvented.

“We have since dropped some of the items,” Nelson said.

“We still run them as specials.”

The menu is updated once a year. A lot of the Cajun spice is added to the dishes and the popular crawfish popcorn runs as a special now and then. The alligator nuggets are the most popular item on the menu and will not be going anywhere, Nelson assured.

“You go out because you want something better than you would make at home,” said Nelson. “We try and have food that people can relate to.”

FUN FACTS ABOUT DINGUS MCGEE’S 1. Dingus McGee’s was named after one of the original partners who demonstrated the same qualities of the old Frank Sinatra character, Dingus McGee. The partner has the same man-about-town reputation, Nelson said.

2. The chicken dishes are made from the coveted Mary’s Free Range Chicken.

3. The burgers are a made from a combination of brisket and short ribs.

4. Dingus McGee’s steaks are all upper-two-thirds choice. “Our beef is within the top nine percent,” said owner Danielle Nelson.

5. The salmon is Skuna Bay salmon. This is salmon that is ocean raised from Vancouver Island.

6. Dingus McGee’s smokes a lot of their own meats.

Enduring the test of time FIND VINTAGE CLOTHES IN HISTORIC AUBURN STORY AND PHOTOS BY JAMIE HAZELTON

T

he perfect place to find vintage clothing would be a historical location right? Visitors to Old Town Auburn will find Robyn Marie’s Vintage Apparel. Open since Feb. 25, 2015 Robyn Marie’s has moved from the Edelweiss Mall to its current location.

The shop carries a century of clothing — pieces from back to the 1880s all way to the 1980s. Robyn Marie, the owner said her favorite era of clothing is the 1930s and 1940s.

“My favorite was a green dress from the ‘30s. I sold it a few weeks ago. I only have the ‘80s because it was given to me. Otherwise I think it’s ugly,” Marie said.

Marie hunts down most of the clothing herself. She also receives clothing from a customer in Grass Valley. She brings most of the clothing in from the Sacramento area unless she happens to find something unique on vacation.

Besides vintage clothing, Marie is also a jeweler and a silversmith. She used to travel to art shows to sell her jewelry but that is hard to do by herself now. She still repairs costume jewelry and has a case of the pieces she designed for sale in her shop.

Marie has personally collected costumes and in 2014 she started to sell them in an antique mall. With little traffic in the mall, she decided to jump in with both feet.

In Old Town Auburn, Marie meets people from all over the world.

“I had a lady in from New Zealand. It’s fun to see and talk to tourists,” she said.

The shop also sells a bit of vintage mens clothing.

“It’s hard to find,” Marie said. “They like vintage too. Men wore their clothing to death, then the women cut it up to make quilts. Most men had one suit they wore on Sundays.”

Stop by the store and you might even find some outfits that belonged to Auburn’s Helen Roper of Roper’s Jewelers.

“Vintage clothing has endured the test of time due to quality of fabric and workmanship, it will still be around when today’s fashion is long gone.” Marie said.

DIVE BARS

Dive bars have made a come back.

What were once rough-and-tumble places to spend an evening, these dark vintage bars have become cool.

Hipsters fed up with pretentious cocktail palaces are flocking to these neighborhood watering holes. At a dive, patrons are not expected to wear the right kind of clothes and have a sparkling smile to get in. There is no dress code (however, shirt and shoes are always a good idea) and the drinks are strong and low priced. So, pull of a bar stool, enjoy a Manhattan and discover a different side of local culture.

Bar hop along with Foothills Magazine as we plunge into three dives in South Placer County.

LIBERAL BULL

No hassles, changes

BY JULIE MILLER ▼ PHOTOS BY AARON TWEETON Dive bars have in recent years skyrocketed in popularity. Case in point is a humble bar in Loomis: Liberal Bull.

“We are getting a lot of clientele,” Linda Hainline said, who is the manager of the bar. “The older ones are kind of dying off and the younger ones are coming in.”

The ages of patrons range from 25 up to 80, Hainline said. And the regulars know each other, like the characters on “Cheers.”

The beauty of a dive is not only the locals, but another draw is the drink prices.

Bottled beers and well drinks start at $3 each.

“We’re always told we are the lowest in the area,” Hainline said.

There are no beers on draft but the selection is wide, offering craft, domestic and imported beer, plus gluten-free beer and cider.

The most popular cocktail drink is the kamikaze. It is made traditionally with equal parts vodka, triple sec and lime juice, but Liberal Bull pours in a touch of sweet and sour.

Like a good local watering hole, Liberal Bull has been around for decades.

Built in 1985, the owner of the business complex, Pete Bailey’s, original plan was to have a bar right in the crux of the center.

However, where the name of bar came from is a bit hazy.

“I ask Pete, he’s not sure himself” where the name came from, Hainline said. “It should have been named The Cave. It’s really dark.”

Liberal Bull does not have windows, except for the front glass door.

“It’s really very cozy,” Hainline said, once your eyes adjust to the lighting.

Recently, Peter Bailey Jr. has been taking over for his dad and helping out in the bar.

Fear not, no changes are planned with the exchange of management.

“I think we’re happy with the way things are,” Hainline said.

“Everyone’s welcome. No hassles,” she said. “It’s a very mellow, nice bar.”

The biggest party in town

BY CAROL GUILD ▼ PHOTOS BY MICHAEL KIRBY The sign is a landmark. And once you see it — whether you’re coming up over the hill from Loomis, down from Auburn, or straightened out from the curvy roads on either side of Taylor — it beckons.

An oasis — a thirst-quenching, hunger satisfying, get your groove or line-dancing moves on oasis. And arguably one of the biggest party joints in this part of the county.

The barstools are coveted real estate where you’ll find a mix of locals, bikers and country music lovers.

“It’s a honky-tonk and a dive bar,” said Doug Beck, one of three proprietors of the club.

Other owners are Aaron Beck and Richard Moffitt.

The three have owned the bar for two years, but the building has been there for about 100 years.

There was a time when the area where the inside dance floor is now had dining tables with food that rivaled big city cuisine. The place has now busted out its seams and let loose. The kitchen is still fully operational and the club continues to serve great food, paring down to breakfast, a lunch and bar menu. “It’s the same menu all day,” Beck said.

Favorites include burgers, tacos (including a Taco Tuesday), chicken sandwiches, fish and chips, and pizza.

That dance floor is now open and well-used, but seating surrounds the place, including patio seating in the back where you will also find another bar and DJ dancing every Friday and Saturday night. Karaoke brings out the star in everyone on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

But the party doesn’t stop there. Every Sunday afternoon, the club also hosts live music.

When you’re not eating or dancing, take a shot at one of the pool tables, horseshoe pits (during daylight) or cornhole.

With a full bar, one of the most popular drinks is a Vitamin C, a mix of orange vodka, orange juice and Red Bull.

Another specialty is the VC Mary, a spin on the traditional bloody mary, substituting Makers Mark bourbon for vodka, and adding blue cheese and bacon. That makes it breakfast, right?

“We’ve created a fun place with good music,” Beck said.

Indeed they have.

The Valencia Club is a boot stompin’, high heel clickin’, throw one back and turn-up-the-volume dive bar on the grandest level.

This is what you call a good old watering hole.

With beer always on ice, it’s just a quick twist of a cap and a tip of the bottle between you and that deliciously frosty, frothy brew.

Spin the stool around and take it all in.

It’s small. It’s friendly. And it’s full of good vibes.

This is Champs.

Before Champs was a champion of neighborhood dive bars, the building had served as a creamery and then a restaurant. There are still hints of the restaurant there. If you look to the back wall, you’ll see where the window once was to pass the food through.

Food service is no longer in the cards for this beer and wine pub.

Although a nice salty bowl of popcorn or chips and salsa is always on hand.

And if you pop in at the right time there may be a potluck party going on.

You could say Champs is a sports bar, but owner Mark Griggs says that with only two TVs, it doesn’t quite fit the scheme.

But that’s OK, because “this is an ‘everybody bar,’” said co-owner Jody Sharp.

You’ll still get your sports at Champs — on TV and otherwise.

They have Monday night football. And free pool on Thursdays. They also have pool tournaments.

It’s a fairly kick-back place where you can groove to the jukebox, chalk up your cue, or just hang out with friends.

It’s a neighborhood bar that welcomes all.

“We’re definitely family here – good, bad or indifferent,” bar manager Elizabeth Gould said with a smile. “If anyone is in need, everybody’s there to help. Just like family.”

“And it’s the neon light at the end of the tunnel,” Sharp said. Literally.

You’ll find Champs near the old tunnel at Taylor Road and Highway 193 in Newcastle.

Look for the gleaming new sign. It glows right over some simply divine dive bar splendor.

‘Foothills Filmore’ hosts Los Lobos KEEP SMILIN’ PROMOTIONS OFFERS END OF YEAR FUN

very rare club appearance

by Grammy award-winning Los Lobos will be coming to Auburn. The Auburn Event Center, also known as the “Foothill Fillmore,” has many rocking bands including: The Keystone Clubs, The Boarding House, Sweetwater or maybe The Bottom Line, Whiskey A Go-Go. The secret to drawing the musical fun to a small town in the foothills?

Keep Smilin’ Promotions, operated by founder and self-described “Purveyor of Fun” Scott Holbrook, is the force behind it all. He has also slated for this season’s schedule: Grateful Dead fun with A’Bears Choice, Funk with Afrolicous, A Very Jerry Christmas featuring Melvin Seals and JGB, and a big New Year’s celebration with the Dead Winter Carpenters and Pine Street Ramblers.

“In addition to the touring bands, Keep Smilin’ has also showcased many local artists,” Holbrook said. “One thing is for sure from the fans perspective, whether enjoying a long-time favorite, or discovering a brand-new band, the quality of the sound is always excellent, the company is the best and the dance floor is where you want to be.”

The Auburn Event Center, located in the corner of a “funky strip mall,” is small and lets fans get up close to the musicians. Over the years, well-known entertainers such as Jerry Jeff Walker, Savoy Brown, Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks, Todd Snider, Suzy Boggus, New Riders of the Purple Sage and others have stopped in to play a set or two.

Plus, the Dead Winter Carpenters, Mojo Green, T-Sisters, Midnight North or Dustbowl Revival have headlined many shows in Auburn.

“All attempts are made to ensure prices are as friendly as possible, and that the level of entertainment second to none,” Holbrook said, noting that the venue is for those 21 and over.

“One should not expect a chair as this is truly a ‘dance hall’ not much different than those who inspired this venue. The Event Center does offer a full bar, and as such outside beverages are not permitted.”

One other regulation is “no mean people will be allowed,” he said.
