T

he Tony Award-winning Broadway musical from the creators of “The Sound of Music” and “South Pacific” is delighting audiences with its contemporary take on the classic tale that many of us have revered for decades. This lush production features an incredible orchestra, jawdropping transformations and all the favorite moments we love— the pumpkin, the glass slipper, the masked ball and more—plus some surprising new twists. The earliest known version of “Cinderella” is thought to be from Greece in 7 B.C., a folk tale of unjust oppression and triumphant reward. Another well-known version was recorded by the Brothers Grimm in the 19th century, albeit their ver-

sion was a bit darker than some. “Cinderella” was first brought to life for modern audiences by Julie Andrews in 1957 on CBS television. The first television remake aired on CBS with Lesley Ann Warren as “Cinderella” in 1965, followed next by the ABC remake on ABC starring Brandy as Cinderella and Whitney Houston as the Fairy Godmother. Stephen Sondheim’s musical, “Into the Woods,” incorporated the Cinderella character on stage in 1988 and is partly based on the Grimm Brothers’ rendition. The stage version debuted on Broadway in 2013 for the first time ever, featuring a new book by Douglas Carter Beane and direction by Mark Brokaw. Today’s production is still rife with metaphor, lending to the

story’s global appeal and satisfying ending. After all, everyone holds out hope for the perfect man or woman to swoop in and fall in love, while delivering the lost slipper that fits oh-so-perfectly. “Cinderella,” with the persecuted heroine who finds vindication, is a fantasy that still has the power to take hold of our emotions. Audience members will be transported back to childhood as performers enchant with Rodgers and Hammerstein’s most beloved songs, including “In My Own Little Corner,” “Impossible/It’s Possible” and “Ten Minutes Ago,” in this hilarious and romantic Broadway experience for anyone who’s ever had a wish, a dream...or a really great pair of shoes.

S

tand-up comedian, author, actress, interviewer and commentator Paula Poundstone will alight in the desert for an evening of her wry, observational humor and impromptu dialogue. Based on her number one rated National Public Radio (NPR) show, “Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me!,” she arms herself with nothing but a stool, a microphone and a can of Diet Pepsi and manages to find the hilarious angle of almost any subject. She explores everything from the absurdity of the political world to the deviousness of housecats and delivers it all with a casual air, impec-

cable timing and razor-sharp wit. Poundstone has been around since the late 1980s when she performed a series of HBO comedy specials. She provided commentary during the 1992 presidential election on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. She is the host of NPR’s program “Live from the Poundstone Institute” and was a recurring guest on the network’s “A Prairie Home Companion” during Garrison Keillor’s years as host. Enlightened audiences can be glad that this former bike messenger and IHOP table busser made her way onto the big stage.

evered internationally for his artistic mastery, cellist Yo-Yo Ma returns to the McCallum for a captivating recital with longtime collaborator Kathryn Stott, one of Britain’s most versatile pianists, presented through the generosity of Arlene Schnitzer and Jordan Schnitzer. Chinese American cellist Yo-Yo Ma was born in Paris, spent his schooling years in New York City and was a child prodigy, performing from the age of four. He graduated from the Juilliard School and Harvard University and has enjoyed a prolific career as both a soloist performing with or-

chestras around the world and as a recording artist. He has recorded more than 90 albums and has received 18 Grammy Awards. Kathryn Stott is a regular visitor to international festivals as a soloist and chamber musician. She has performed around the world since 1978 and is a remarkable interpreter of Tango and Latin dance music, having collaborated with Yo-Yo Ma on the Grammy Award-winning CD “Soul of the Tango” and its successor “Obrigado Brazil.” Fans can settle in for an evening of elegant rhythms and striking sounds.

ow in its 31st year, McCormick’s Car Auction will showcase nearly 600 hot cars, including classics, antiques, muscle cars, European sports cars, trucks and motorcycles. This 63rd show on wheels will also display stunners from Hollywood’s silent movie era as well as Rat Pack roadsters, like Charlie Chaplin’s Packard, Dean Martin’s Cadillac, a 1957 Chevrolet Nomad and hundreds of others. Proprietor of McCormick’s Classic Cars Keith McCormick has noted “a resurgence in sleeper cars, including the 1953-55 Corvettes, which

have doubled in price in the past two years. They are now highly desirable, collectible cars.” The twice yearly car auction has become a Palm Springs institution. Car enthusiasts show up to do some serious bidding as well as just take photos and take in the visuals, especially on opening day when the auction is free and open to the public. The collectible cars represent a chronological history of our modern era, providing an investment opportunity or just great fodder for the hobbyist.

S

ince its opening, Rick’s Desert Grill has been an absolute winner. In a few short years, owner and General Manager Nick Seidner has carved out a niche by offering unique and hearty dishes, first class ingredients, impeccable service and a family-friendly ambience. The décor is totally “Palm Springs” – a cool mix of mid-century modern and diner retro set off by dramatic posters depicting stars from Hollywood’s Golden Age…who were also part or full-time Coachella Valley residents. These enlarged photos of Francis Albert Sinatra, Dino Martin and TV comedy legend Lucille Ball add just the right artistic touch. While the bill of fare includes many all-American classics like fried

chicken, turkey club or T-bone steak, you can also enjoy items with Cuban flair, a defining aspect of this family’s cultural heritage. Customer favorites include the Lechon Asado (pork, slow roasted and cooked with rich rock salt, a black and white pepper rub and roasted-to-sweetness garlic, basted with orange juice and red wine until the flavors are soaked into the meat) and the Cuban Salad (fresh ripe Roma tomatoes, diced cucumbers, red onions, avocado in a homemade Balsamic vinaigrette). But Rick’s most iconic dish is the Stuffed Tostones, which are “bowls” crafted from green plantains and filled with the Lechon Picadillo (sweet ground beef, raisins, bell peppers, olives and onions) or Ropa Vieja (shredded

flank steak in a Creole tomato sauce). Starting in November, Rick’s Desert Grill will debut an all new Happy Hour Menu, available, 8-11 a.m. Sunday-Thursday and 3-7 p.m., MondayFriday. On it, you’ll find the Cubano Trio, a combo featuring the Lecon, Picadillo and Ropa Vieja fillings. Sides like Caribbean rice and their slow-cooked black beans are oh-so authentic and enhance the meal. Along with a full bar, thoughtful wine list and a good selection of domestic and foreign beers, you might try the signature ice-frosted mojitos made from an array of flavored rums and ample flourishes of ripe, sweet fruit that were created by Nick. He has also come up with a divine fromscratch Bloody Mary, me gusta.

orn in Sicily, where cooking is an art form, Enzo Amodeo began making meals for friends while still in high school. Eventually immigrating to America, he garnered experience in well-known eateries in New York, Chicago and Orange County before striking out on his own here in the CV. Enzo has a gift for recipe innovation, considers his guests priority one and gives as much as he asks from his crew. Maybe that’s why

he’s been such an unqualified success as a restaurateur. At both locations of Bucatini Trattoria, popular items include the Tagliata Chianina (beef tenderloin grilled rare and delicately sliced, finished in a Cabernet and peppercorn reduction sauce); the Spaghetti Pescatora (olive oil, garlic, shrimp, scallops, salmon, calamari, Manila clams and mussels in a light, spicy tomato sauce—also available in Risotto style).

or the past 11 years, the French Corner Café has been wowing an ever growing fan base. Born in France, Owner/Manager Marc Davy and brother Aimeric, pastry chef, have delighted by offering authentic family recipes with taste influences of the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean. The charming space creates a friendly French ambience with a bistro-style décor that includes primitive paintings of the French countryside livening brightly colored walls. Traditional French fare is obvi-

ously the order of the day. Regulars like the Tomato and Goat Cheese appetizer (on a toasted baguette with walnuts and herbs in a balsamic reduction), the Gratin Coquilles St Jacques (scallops in Bechamel sauce), an array of crepes dishes and the Eggs Benedict (try it with the spinach AND salmon). Look for Non-GMO flour, hormone- and antiobiotic-free chicken and beef. And enjoy wine, beer, champagne and the richest, most decadent handcrafted desserts in this Valley.

n 2016, a colorful Coachella Valley entrepreneur named Wayne “Woody” Woodliff opened the doors to what is now a Palm Springs hot spot for food and entertainment. Successfully combining rustic and contemporary décor, Woody’s Palm House uses recycled brick accent walls and lamps and sconces created by local artisan Susan Dorazo to create ambience. Woody is legendary for his award-winning burgers, made with 100 percent Angus beef. Best-sell-

ing dishes also include the Spinach Strawberry Salad (red onions, sprinkles of feta cheese, fresh strawberries and locally grown dates tossed with red wine vinaigrette); the Creamy Veggie Risotto (julienne squash, zucchini and carrots steeped in vegetable broth); and the Grilled Rack of Lamb (risotto, cremini mushrooms, spinach, garlic, Cabernet sauce). There is room for ten peddlers, five non-peddlers, and two Sunny Cycle team members operating the vehicle. A minimum of eight passengers is required for a tour. Two and threehour tours are available. Individuals can be put together for a tour or a group can charter the entire bike. The City of Palm Springs has a fabulous selection of route alternatives in the downtown business core, with generally flat terrain, allowing for a less strenuous ride. T

his is pub fare like you’ve never seen – or tasted – before. The popular Canadian restaurant has expanded into the U.S., greeted with a warm reception by Californians as well as Canucks. This feel-good franchise thrives on hand crafted drinks and a lively vibe, but it has gained the most attention for offering exceptionally high quality food made from scratch. The Happy Hour is intentionally reminiscent of a British Public House and runs every day from 3 to 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. until closing. Draft beer starts at $3 and Fox well and California wine starts at $5. The mixologists put together liquid concoctions that complement the hearty yet contemporary menu options. Games are a big part of the

agenda during Happy Hour, with darts, beer pong, foosball and shuffleboard. Favorite edibles here take on a gourmet spin, with options like tomato flatbread ($12), one pound of chicken wings ($13), the Cubano sandwich with roast beef, ham and gruyere cheese ($15), fish and chips ($17) and the British favorite, sticky toffee pudding ($8). The bar menu serves smaller plates but they are just as tasty, with selections like classic poutine ($7), truffle fries ($5) and fried calamari ($8). Brunch is served on Sundays from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., and food is also available for delivery and take out. The frivolity and friendliness extend throughout the week, with musical entertainment every Wednes-

day and Sunday, generating a total social experience and a strong sense of camaraderie. For those not too angry with the NFL, the gastropub has football beer specials all day every Sunday on and Monday nights, with Bud Light on draught for $3 or buckets of Bud in bottles for $15. Service is fun, friendly and unpretentious, with owners and transplanted Canadians Kurt Gardner and Danny Chen at the helm as President/CEO and Vice President, respectively. They are passionate about their business and emphasize that there is something here for every interest and taste, with a common theme of bringing people together and encouraging positive energy through food, drink, sports and fun.

HE RETURNS SEAN TIMOTHY BROWN RETURNS TO DEZART PERFORMS’ STAGE IN “THE LEGEND OF GEORGIA McBRIDE” RUNNING THROUGH NOVEMBER 12.

Dezart Performs “Legend” The 2017-2018 Dezart Performs season opens with “The Legend of Georgia McBride,” directed by Michael Shaw, Friday, Nov. 3, and runs through Sunday, Nov. 12, at the Pearl McManus Theater in Palm Springs The 10th anniversary season comedy opener by Matthew Lopez premiered Off-Broadway in 2015 and drew critical raves. His wife discovers she’s pregnant, and they are desperately short of funds. Enter Tracy, a drag queen angel, her cranky companion Rexy, who does an Edith Piaf-on-skates routine and Anorexia Nervosa (“It’s Italian” she sniffs). The dialogue bubbles with spontaneous and slick wit. Curtain Time: “The Legend of Georgia McBride,” 7:30 p.m. Friday-Saturday; 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3-12, Dezart Performs, Pearl McManus Theater, Palm Springs Woman’s Club, 314 S. T

he gallery at Sunnylands Center and Gardens is now featuring the artwork of the two brothers, José and Tomás Chávez Morado, who jointly created one of the most famous landmarks in Mexico, the 40-foot tall El Paraguas fountain for the courtyard of Mexico City’s National Museum of Anthology prior to the 1968 Olympics. Walter and Lenore Annenberg admired the fountain and commissioned the brothers to create a halfscale version for the entry court of the main house at Sunnylands, their winter estate in Rancho Mirage. While you can’t see the fountain unless you take the tour inside the Sunnylands estate, you can see their work, paintings by José and sculpture by Tomás, in the gallery at the Sunnylands Center. While the brothers’ work is well known in Mexico, the exhibition,

“Carved Narrative: Los Hermanos Chávez Morado,” is their first outside their homeland. Their work reflects themes common in the art vocabulary of their country after the Mexican Revolution (1910-1920), such as the depiction of indigenous people and their fusion with the descendants of their Spanish conquerors. Both brothers are now deceased and the 37 pieces (16 paintings by José and 21 sculptures by Tomás) are on loan from Tomás’ daughter, Adriana Marcela Chávez Anguiano, and the Instituto Estatal de la Cultura de Guanajuato. “Carved Narrative” is part of “Pa-

cific Standard Time: LA/ LA,” a far-reaching and ambitious exploration of Latin American and Latino art in dialogue with Los Angeles taking place from September 2017 through January 2018 at more than 70 cultural institutions in Southern California. Sunnylands’ “Carved Narrative” exhibition will remain on display until next June 3. The Center is open Thursday through Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. (closed Monday through Wednesday). Admission and parking are free. The entrance is situated off Bob Hope Drive between Frank Sinatra and Gerald Ford Drives in Rancho Mirage.

The open air center with plenty of parking is home to the largest collection of luxury outlets in California with 180 designer stores, including Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Burberry, Coach, Michael Kors, Prada, Gucci, Banana Republic, Barney’s and dozens of others, all centered around anchor stores Sak’s OFF 5th and Last Call by Neiman Marcus.

There are dining options like Blaze Pizza, Five Guys Burgers & Fries and Jody Maroni’s Sausage Kingdom. InN-Out Burger, Taco Bell and Ruby’s Diner all beckon from nearby, too. Immediately next door and often considered part of the same complex, shoppers will find the Cabazon Outlets with 18 stores including Le Creuset, Brighton Collectibles and Under Armour. But for those who are on a mission to buy, the name of the outlet center is less important than knowing there’s an abundance of stores for every fancy.

gua Caliente Casino Resort Spa and its sister property Spa Resort Casino has announced that the Casino Entertainment Executive of the Year was awarded to the resorts’ Director of Entertainment, Dan Pferschy, by the Global Gaming Expo (G2E) at their annual gathering in Las Vegas. In the world of professional entertainment, Pferschy, who has been employed by the casinos for five years, works tirelessly to promote The Show at Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa, elevating this premier showroom to the place in Southern California where the best entertainers want to perform and rehearse. Every detail of The Show’s design lifts the concert experience to the highest level for audiences and performers alike. As a result, the lineup at The Show reads more like a hall of fame. Goo Dolls, Alan Jackson, Sting, Steven Tyler and many more have performed at The Show. While also curating a lively lineup of entertainers in The Lounge at Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa and at Spa Resort Casino’s Cascade Lounge, Pferschy has been instrumental to the development of state-of-the-art outdoor concerts and events at the Spa Resort Casino. Annual blockbuster events like a New Year’s Eve Countdown celebration that draws more than 16,000 attendees and a popular seasonal concert series, Concerts Under the Palms, entice top acts to perform outdoors in a unique setting under the stars in beautiful downtown Palm Springs. “Dan represents the best-in-class,” says Agua Caliente Casino Resorts Senior Director of Marketing Scott Kornfield, “for our casinos and the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians.”

t’s been said that “luck is what happens with preparation meets opportunity.” Case in point: Spa Resort Casino. A flagship of fun in the Coachella Valley and a showcase project of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, the Spa is smack in the middle of downtown Palm Springs, offering gaming, entertainment, dining and drinking options aplenty. Over the years, the Spa has undergone several transformations, most recently an architecturally appealing, covered parking garage adjacent to the Casino entry. Starting with the Casino floor, promotions include Crack the Safe, Reel Deal, $125,000 Football Challenge, Lucky Lincoln and $315,000 Spinning Spades, just name a few. Table

games feature Three Card Poker, Blackjack, Crazy 4 Poker, Pai Gow Poker, Mystery Card Roulette, Spanish 21, Ultimate Texas Hold’Em and more. There are also new and classic slot machines, video poker and slot tournaments. The High Limit Room includes Double Deck Blackjack, EZ Baccarat, 6 Deck Shoe Blackjack and High Limit Slots. Of course, it’s all made sweeter when racking up points on a Paradise Rewards Club card. Delicious dining abounds, with the Oasis Buffet open Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday ($9.99 lunch and $14.99 dinner, $10.99 breakfast Saturday and Sunday, and Sparkling Sunday Brunch for $24.99). The Steakhouse serves dinner every evening with aged prime cuts, seafood and award win-

ning wines indoors or on the Mediterranean patio. Specials include Petite Filet Mignon, Prime Rib, Organic Salmon, Free Range Marsala Chicken Breast or Maple Duck Breast ($45). There’s even a reduced priced Happy Hour menu. The Sundance Lounge pours local and hand crafted draft beers along with many other cocktail and beverage selections. A full line up of entertainment features a DJ on Friday and Saturday nights and Latin Night on Sundays in the Cascade Lounge. The Concerts Under the Palms program put big names on an outdoor stage for free, with Uncle Cracker set to perform November 11. A visit to the Spa is a surefire formula for making your own luck.

ASTROLOGY

IN THE STARS Your robust November astrology report By Charlie Price

G

ratitude. It is that time of year, dear, lovely soul creatures. Here’s a tip: don’t wait until Thanksgiving hits to find a reason to practice gratitude this month. Be proactive and get the energetic juices flowing before you even begin scooping up a mound of mashed potatoes and gravy. Beyond that, it’s a curious month, overall, too. At least energetically, as the entire country reflects back on the events that began one year ago. What actions can you take in the coming year to promote more good? Something to ponder. In the meantime, take note of the juicy-good ahead: Aries: Oh, remarkable Aries, natural born leader of all, did you know that more than 70 percent of those lovely planets are resting in upper half of your chart? What does this mean? Potency in career, some stagnation with family matters, and an overall sense of how to balance this thing called life. Turn to a Libra and have a good chat and do not allow your career to steer you too far away from loved ones. (When was the last time you meditated rather than medicated?) Taurus: It’s curious how vastly different your chart is compared to Aries this month. For you, others will most certainly come first over your personal goals. But, like Aries, you will have to practice flexibility and, perhaps, compromise. Levity comes in the form of travel, higher thought education and delving deeper into spiritual matters. Go deeper. You’ll be okay. Gemini: You go, Gemini. If there ever was a time to thive, it’s now. Between good financial elements and a good flow in career, you are in a rare place of contentment. You’re social, too, which is where you may begin to notice that it could be time to shift your requirements in love and friendship. You’re worth it. But do this: listen to others more. Cancer: Emotions, emotions, emotions. So, the fact that you are about to be pulled in a bunch of curious and different directions, the good news is, this wouldn’t be the first time. True, you may not know what path to walk down right now and confusion may occur, however, it’s all happening for a reason. Slow down. Like big time. You’ll be okay. Transformation is right around the corner.

Leo: Feng Shui much? Now is a good time to delve into creating a more energetically soothing environment. Perfect timing, too, because there’s a strong chance you are in the middle of personal and professional commitments. If you find yourself a bit frenetic, channel the energy toward family and for goodness sake, take advantage of the astrological placement and add some spice to your love life. Roar more. Leo. Virgo: For you, wonderful Virgo, it is time to reflect upon what decisions you made on your recent birthday. How are your goals unfolding? Where can you add some improvement? And, could you lighten up? That should prove fruitful if you do. Wait before making big financial decisions. Two words: surrender and trust. Libra: Something curious is afoot for you, Libra. You’re typically the grounding force and always weighing things out. But not this month. Something uncorks and something super fabulous is flowing out of you. It’s called uninhibitedness. And it’s arrived at the perfect time to remind you that you don’t need to keep your spirit bottled up. Relax. Allow The Universe to balance out the winds of fate for a while. Scorpio: Well, this is your month—literally and figuratively. Like a true Transformer, this will be a powerful time for you to rise beyond previous limitations and enter a new realm in many areas of your life. But, because you tend to be a bit, how do we say this, emotional, you may have a tendency to look back. Do so—but only in the rearview mirror. We need your eyes on the road ahead. You remind us of what’s possible. Three words for you this month: go for it. (Whatever it is.)

Sagittarius: You’re mystical. You’re wise. And you’re about to complete another year of life. Break out the journal. Reflect. Ponder. Write down what you’ve learned. Consider what you want to learn. These deeper musings give you an opportunity to plot out the next year. Family and friends trump career matters this month. And yes, we heard you. You want connection. Take your shoes off. Stay a while. Tell people what’s on your heart and mind. (Again.) Capricorn: This is the perfect month to complete things—projects, old goals that have been left unsettled, and much more. Rather than begin anew, just finish what you started in a gaggle of areas of your life. You dig this sort of things when it comes to business matters—you’re so efficient. But take time now to look at your relationships and see what’s left hanging. Or unsaid. Aquarius: Tend to all aspects of your health this month and consider doing something thoroughly holistic—acupuncture, reiki, cranial sacral. You get what we’re saying here. This is a wonderful time to be proactive with your energy field and give it a boost before there’s even a chance of depleting it over the holidays. Be grateful for finances. More will flow. Pisces: You seek a bit more autonomy this month. Go with it. People will understand. Be grateful for your health and finances and take some time to ask yourself how you are really feeling about both arenas. If you see an opportunity for a day trip somewhere, go with the flow. Either way, this could be a wonderfully reflective month and you will emerge feeling grateful for the bounty in your life. Just in time for Thanksgiving. Good job.
