unning with a crowd of excited kids and smiling parents, holding my 10-year-old daughter’s hand to encourage her along, I overheard a young girl behind me tell her friend, “I have one goal today — to beat my teacher!” And along we went, all ages from babies pushed in strollers to grandparents defying age, all speeds from lightning quick to happy stroll, 3.1 miles through the beautiful streets and trails of Treelake Village and back to Granite Bay High School participating in the Eureka Schools Foundation’s ninth annual Fund Run. This year’s event featured bright blue skies and crisp morning air, perfect conditions for the 5k, 10k, kids mile and kids dash races. A new record of almost 1,000 runners enjoyed this active celebration of our wonderful schools. Over 100 volunteers made it happen, raising over $50,000 for our local K-8 schools’ enrichment programs and teacher training that are the fruit of the ESF’s funding efforts. Now celebrating its 25th anniversary, the all-volunteer ESF has raised over $7 million and counting to support our schools.

It’s no secret that Granite Bay schools are some of the best in our region, and it’s no coincidence either since the community support we have here is a direct factor in the quality of the education. As Eureka Union School District Superintendent Tom Janis noted in a recent email to parents, EUSD students outperform all K-8 districts

Years ago, when my oldest child was starting at Greenhills Elementary School, I remember Principal Peter Towne telling the new parents at orientation that the more interest we showed in our children’s education, and the more we got involved from helping with homework to volunteering in the classroom, the more engaged our children would become. Mr. Towne’s message was not lost on us, nor on so many in our community, and replicated across the district this attitude of participation is alive and well.

And I believe it’s a significant factor in the strength of our schools.

Out on the course, I couldn’t help but notice so many teachers out there running with their students, leading by example and setting the pace. At the finish area long after the race, disco band adding to spirit of fun, I asked men’s 5k overall winner Jack Longoria (14) if he was now on the cross country team at Granite Bay High, and he surprised me by saying “No, I’m in band ” — I’m guessing he plays a wind instrument! He better savor this victory because his brother Grant (9) was winner of his own division, second place overall and serious about catching his brother next time!

Granite Bay’s Jenn Norpchen on empowerment

F

or Granite Bay artist Jenn Norpchen, gourds are far more than a Thanksgiving decoration.

With the help of wires, resin, clay, paint, prior engineering experience and good old-fashioned creativity, the versatile vegetable has become a way of life for Norpchen the past six years — and a way out of a tough spot she’d found herself in.

“I lost just about everything,” Norpchen says outside HighHand Gallery in Loomis, where she shows her work.

She lived in the Bay Area and worked as a commercial designer for Chevron until being laid off in 2010. In 2015, her husband of 40 years, Dieter, passed away. Since her two sons were grown, Norpchen sold her house and started over, coming to live with a friend in Granite Bay. “We all have a big hit in life,” she says. “That was my hit. I was lucky to have friends to get me through it.”

Norpchen took an art class on vessels while she still worked for Chevron and drew inspiration from an unlikely muse: gourds. Seeing animals hidden in their shapes, she began adding elements like ears, legs, wings and faces. Eventually, she took her creations to the Old Town gallery in Auburn to see what she could do with them. After jurying her work, she was accepted into the gallery — the first of 10 across the western United States to feature her art.

Now, Jen’s Wild Gourds — the collection’s official name, spelled with one N — are displayed at two exhibits in Sacramento, a gallery in Sutter Creek and installations across the west in Colorado, Wyoming and Washington.

Her connection to the crop isn’t entirely random: Norpchen’s sister used to grow gourds, and her mother introduced her to the arts during her childhood. Norpchen also has a design degree with a focus on ceramics. She incorporates engineering skills picked up during her time at Chevron by wiring in all the components to her sculptures, making them structurally sound.

“I’m normal,” she jokes. “I promise I’m not on drugs.”

Part of Norpchen’s process is what she calls the “elusive gourd hunt.” The perfect specimen is symmetrical, the right color and the right texture. Gourds sometimes have a layer of skin that grows mold, but Norpchen uses the mottled patterns it leaves behind to her advantage, chemically treating the project at her small studio in Granite Bay. Knowing the gourd’s purpose is an instantaneous, intuitive task and like a magician, Norpchen is reluctant to give up her secrets.

“When I find it, I give it a name,” she says, pointing to a rabbit with bulging eyes and fluffy white hair between its ears on display. “That rabbit up there? I knew it would be Jack Nicholson.”

continued from page 9 Though her pieces often embody the wacky and whimsical, Norpchen’s work has a more somber side to it. She incorporates materials from nature, besides the gourds themselves: feathers, leaves covered with resin, buffalo fur she sources from Washington state, driftwood from Folsom Lake. Her projects are of animals, typically endangered by humans, whether by poaching, hunting or damaging their habitats. She creates birds, but also giraffes, elephants, zebras, moose and polar bears.

“Instead of killing an animal, I’ll make you an animal that’s as close to the real thing as I can get it,” she says.

That said, some pieces are solely whimsical or representative of herself.

She identifies with a gourd bird called Ginger, inspired by a character from the movie “Chicken Run,” as well as another bird sitting on an empty nest, now that her two sons are grown and live elsewhere.

Since beginning her career as an artist, Norpchen has seen substantial changes in her work.

“You grow and you learn and you evolve. Isn’t that it — you evolve?” she says. “I don’t feel like I’m getting older. I just feel like I’m getting better at this.”

In an earlier phase of life she never imagined doing this, but now Norpchen works 10 hours a day on average and has custom orders coming in faster than she can make them. She recently completed her first show at the Sacramento Arts Festival, joined by more than 200 others in selling and displaying work. And the weekend after Thanksgiving, Norpchen will participate in another event at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento.

Among the success, she comes back to gratitude, empowerment and feeling fortunate, despite the painful path that led to this point.

“It’s given me a huge range of confidence. I have control of where I’m going next,” she says. “As life goes, art grows.

That’s where I’m at.”

Winterhawk neighborhood intimate, quiet, connected to its past

O

n her first night in the Winterhawk neighborhood, resident Kadie LeMar sat in her backyard and said, “It’s so quiet here.”

Not much has changed in that regard since the mother of three moved in. Her backyard, her neighbors’ backyards and the subdivision’s five acres of wetland are frequent hangout spots for ducks, turkeys, foxes, coyote and possums. LeMar said she often sees great egrets on her property, tucked beneath tall, shady oaks — a special sight within the boundaries of rapidly developing Granite Bay. Winterhawk, one of few gated neighborhoods north of Douglas Boulevard, is nestled in the corner of Olive Ranch and Barton Roads. According to Beth Bryant, a local real estate agent and Winterhawk resident, the three-street neighborhood

has 39 lots. Most of its homes were built in the mid- to late-90s. Its residents are doctors and attorneys, entrepreneurs and a United pilot. But retirees and elderly relatives of homeowners also call it home.

“We have all generations and I love it.

It keeps me young,” Bryant said at the dining room table of her home, alongside LeMar and Kellie Tonda, neighbors who both still have children at home.

LeMar, who lives on one side of Bryant’s home, has three elementary-schoolers.

But on the other side of Bryant’s lot lives Marianne Presti, a resident who is beyond original. Presti, 85, has lived on the land nearly three decades before construction began on Winterhawk, when the area was still considered Loomis.

continued from page 13 “My husband was born here,” Presti said. “The family lived off the land with a farm. They grew grapevines. Before that, some of the Maidu lived out here.”

Her husband and his siblings walked across the fields to a one-room schoolhouse for first-graders through eighth-graders. During that time, most of the area was wild or typical farm land with poor roads that were later improved when the area expanded.

When she came to the area in 1959, having moved from Germany six years prior, she said the nearest Payless store was in Citrus Heights and the nearest market was well down what is now Douglas Boulevard.

“Coming from the big city, it was a slap in the face, living out here in a rural area,” Presti said. “But I got adjusted and I learned to drive and was able to make my citizenship.”

Around 1990, Presti’s husband’s family sold 30 of their 40 acres to Winterhawk developer Gene Edwards. Since then, she’s been happy with the changes in Winterhawk and the surrounding Granite Bay community.

“Really, it’s still kind of countrylike in the immediate area where we live, except there’s more homes,” she said. “But

we still have to go all the way to the road when we have to pick up the mail.”

Besides distant mailboxes, Winterhawk still has other parts of its past preserved: barbed wire incorporated into an old oak in LeMar’s backyard and a rusted iron chain dangling from tree branches where cattle used to hang, which Tonda pointed out.

Unlike other Granite Bay neighborhoods, Winterhawk lacks streetlights, playgrounds, parking lots and sprawling basketball courts. Instead, children play soccer in the street, ride their bikes or catch frogs in the marsh.

“It’s an old-school neighborhood,” Tonda said. “It reminds me of when I was a kid.”

‘Knitted Knockers’ for breast cancer survivors

ast year, oncologists at Sutter Roseville Medical Center found a tumor in Linda Briw’s right breast. Five weeks after her mastectomy, her body rejected the replacement implant. Though Briw, 68, of Lincoln, said her mastectomy wasn’t devastating, it felt strange seeing herself in the mirror afterward.

“What you don’t want is people looking at you and wondering why you’re lopsided or uneven,” Briw said. “You feel so self-conscious on your own.”

For many women, losing a breast can mean losing a sense of womanhood, confidence or normalcy. Besides the financial and physical toll of tests, surgeries and radiation treatment, losing a breast can affect women emotionally. In Briw’s case, inhibited healing only lengthened the process.

So Briw had a choice to make. She could get a heavy, expensive, sweat-inducing but traditional silicone prosthetic, which often requires a doctor’s prescription and slow insurance process, according to Briw’s nurse Kelly Camarillo.

Or, she could try out a Knitted Knocker.

Founded in Bellingham, Washington, Knitted Knockers offers prostheses that are — unlike their conventional counterparts — lightweight, breathable, durable and inexpensive, coming to about $2.40 to $4 a pair, according to the organization’s website.

Knockers are free to recipients, who put in an online request and receive them by

mail. Yarn supply, time and postage are all provided by the knitter or crocheter.

Briw said she received hers from an anonymous knitter in Citrus Heights about a week after requesting them.

Rocklin resident and breast cancer survivor Carol Peterson has both made and received knockers after a double mastectomy. Peterson has crocheted over 50 pairs since December 2016, dropping them off at Sutter and University of California hospitals in the area.

“It’s a nice thing to do and it makes me feel good — I’m not just sitting here twiddling my thumbs,” Peterson said. “We had a lady whose son was getting married a week after her (mastectomy) and she didn’t have time to get a prosthetic. We were able to knit her one and get it right over to her and her dress looked beautiful.”

According to knitter Marie Busch, who splits her time between Orangevale and South Lake Tahoe, most recipients request the knockers in pairs. Many women prefer to have them in the same colors as their bras. The prosthesis can be knit in any bra size and have a hole in the back, where the user can adjust the stuffing to her preferred firmness.

Busch herself has not had breast cancer but became inspired to start knitting the prosthesis after nearly half her circle of friends from high school became diagnosed with the disease.

Now the knockers are the only thing she’s made in the last two years, being the leader of a project team within the Camellia City Stockinettes, a group of 150 knitters from Sacramento, Roseville, Rocklin, Davis and the Tahoe area.

In order to become registered in the organization, Busch had to submit a sample to prove she could knit the pattern and teach others.

According to Busch and the organization’s website, Knitted Knockers must follow a particular pattern and the end product must be soft, breathable, easy to wash, durable and look natural under clothing.

The rules are strict, not to deter those who wish to help out the cause, but to ensure a quality product for the women who use them. Knockers must be made from a list of 37 approved yarns found online, at big box stores or at local yarn shops like Roseville’s Got Your Goat Yarn Studio.

ic yarn, a washable substitute for wool, is too scratchy to use on an area that is sensitive even before radiation or surgery scars. With the exception of acrylic prostheses made for swimming, cotton yarn is a go-to for many knocker knitters, Gemignani said.

Though there are Knitted Knocker teams throughout Northern California in Sacramento, the Bay Area and around Tahoe, there is not a registered group in South Placer. The need is not going away, either.

According to Nancy Turner, spokeswoman for Sutter Health, there are 950 new breast cancer cases per year in the Greater Sacramento and Central Valley regions.

“Unfortunately cancer’s a booming business, and unless they come up with a cure I don’t see an end. There’s definitely a need out there,” Camarillo said.

Though there isn’t yet a cure, there is treatment for the pain that can come after, starting with yarn, a few needles and a willingness to help women in need.

Mother and son set up music school in Granite Bay

J

ust shy of 20 years after leaving Georgia, in the former Soviet Union, Lali Dediashvili and her son David Khevsurishvili were ready for another change.

Since coming to San Jose in November 1997, the mother and son had put their musical backgrounds to work, running two Silicon Valley music schools. But even with the success of those schools, they say, San Jose was starting to lose its luster.

“San Jose’s getting a little too busy,” said Khevsurishvili, 42. “11:30 a.m. is bumperto-bumper.”

So on July 22, Khevsurishvili and his mother did what a lot of people have been doing in recent years — they moved from the Bay Area to South Placer. Three months later, the two already have a music school running at 8380 Auburn Folsom Road in Granite Bay and a few students.

“I like it, I like it,” Dediashvili said of Granite Bay. “Everything is nice. Like forest when I wake up.”

It’s a far cry from what they once knew.

Georgia gained its independence in 1991, as did many other nearby countries when the former Soviet Union imploded. Chaos only followed chaos, however.

“Ever since, we were trying to get the documents, but it took a few years to get the paperwork to immigrate,” Khevsurishvili said.

They landed in San Jose, where other relatives had settled. Khevsurishvili, who had been first chair of violin for Sony Music in Georgia, scored a teaching job at Almaden School of Music. He purchased the school in 2002, opening David K’s School of Music roughly 10 miles to the west two years later.

Both schools thrived, though they required heavy commitment. Dediashvili, who plays violin and piano, taught lessons seven days a week, logging especially long hours on the weekend and missing meals with her son and his family.

Khevsurishvili, who plays violin, guitar,

saxophone, piano, guitar and clarinet, put in heavy hours with the San Jose schools as well.

“I used to work, like, for four years like night and day to organize everything and set up everything,” Khevsurishvili said. “But nowadays, I’m not even needed to be there.

I’m there like once a year, twice a year.”

Earlier this year, in talking to friends, they had an epiphany.

“We said, ‘Okay, we don’t want to be here anymore’ in San Jose,” Khevsurishvili said.

Looking to the California east, they heard first of Roseville and considered El Dorado Hills before settling on Granite Bay. “I like it very much,” Khevsurishvili said. “It’s more relaxed. People seem nic-

Khevsurishvili, who is married with three children under the age of 10, said he intends to stay in Granite Bay until his youngest child is through school.

He and his mother have a goal to get enough students “to share our knowledge but not work until 9 p.m., 10 p.m. like we used to do. Something like three, four hours a day.”

Whatever happens, it could prove a welcome alternative to the gridlock of San Jose or the chaos of the former Soviet Union.

t’s Saturday morning at Granite Bay High School and Mike Marjama is about to drop some knowledge on the baseball field.

“This is ‘Hitting with Marj Day,’” says Marjama, a 28-year-old Seattle Mariners catcher and former Granite Bay High player. “My school is open right now.”

Marjama gets some music playing off his phone and a portable speaker. A group of Granite Bay High players, which will soon grow to nine, is nearby.

“Today is about getting scoopy,” Marjama tells the group.

There are a lot of perks of having a Major League Baseball player on hand for fall workouts. One perk: the chance to learn MLB lingo such as “scoopy,” which means to position one’s hands while hitting as if scooping ice cream.

On this day, Oct. 14, some Granite Bay High athletes are about to get scoopy with someone who just made the big leagues and can’t wait to share what he’s learned.

A SEPTEMBER CALL-UP

Life can change for the better in a hurry.

A year ago, Marjama was getting over surgery for a torn quadriceps. A year before that, he was in his fifth year of minor league baseball, no end in sight. And while at Granite Bay High, he had an eating disorder so bad he missed his junior season.

“He’s a great example for all these young guys to see that if you work your butt off, you have a chance as long as you’re working to get better everyday,” Granite Bay varsity baseball coach Pat Esposito said.

Marjama knew he was finally close to the majors this season, after making the Triple-A All-Star Game in July while in the Tampa Bay Rays’ system. But he lacked a clear path to the majors, with MLB AllStar catcher Wilson Ramos entrenched in Tampa Bay. Marjama’s break came Aug. 6 when the Rays traded him to the Mariners. “I think it’s one of those things when you’re standing behind the plate, you’re like, ‘Oh, don’t turn around,’ the big grandstands and everything,” Marjama said. “When you see it and you accept it, it’s still baseball.”

Marjama got what’s known in baseball as a September call-up, when rosters expand from 25 players to 40 for the regular season’s final month. It’s a time when teams like to test out unproven prospects.

It can also be a time when prospects sit the bench for weeks before seeing action.

Marjama appeared in three games with two plate appearances over his first 24 days in the big leagues. Then came two starts in the last week of the season, against the A’s and Angels. He made the most of it, going 3-for-7 and homering off Angels’ reliever Jose Alvarez.

Shortly after that, Marjama did the same thing he does every offseason and returned to Granite Bay. “I’m in a great position now where I have a lot of things accomplished that I’ve really liked,” Marjama said. “Now it’s going to be kind of, how can I help people in

this area — or, how can I help the people that have helped me?”

WHO’S THAT SUBSTITUTE TEACHER?

Back in the old days of baseball, when salaries were much lower, it was common for big league players to have off-season jobs.

Minor league players still do it fairly often since their player salaries sometimes don’t cover a year’s worth of expenses.

And while Marjama’s already received a few MLB paychecks, he’s back to his old offseason gig: substitute teaching at

places like Rocklin, Granite Bay and Whitney high schools, as well as a few middle schools.

It’s not just P.E. courses, either, that Marjama is subbing in for. One day before his volunteer work at the Granite Bay High baseball field, the former pre-med student taught an Advanced Placement science course.

Weird looks from his students? Sure.

“They’re like, ‘Oh, you’re verified on Twitter,’” Marjama said. “I’m like, ‘Guys, it’s not that cool.’”

Other things have been keeping Marjama busy, too. After Marjama’s MLB debut, he told Joe Davidson of the Sacramento Bee about his high school eating disorder, which came when he was trying to drop weight for wrestling and became an obsession.

“A lot of it stemmed from misinformation,” Marjama told the Granite Bay View.

“I thought in order to get big and strong, you worked out a lot and you didn’t eat anything. Well, that doesn’t work out well, as we know.”

Davidson’s story generated phone calls to Marjama on behalf of other people suffering. Marjama and his agents are in the process of putting together a nonprofit for eating disorders.

Other than that, Marjama intends to take the offseason to get physically stronger, as he focuses on possibly becoming the Mariners’ No. 2 catcher behind Mike Zunino.

Marjama will also speak locally and keep volunteering at Granite Bay High.

“You can tell what type of person he is being out here with the kids,” assistant coach and close friend Mike Mussolino said. “You can see that he’s a coach. He’s got coaching in his future for sure.”

Players like Garen Caulfield, a junior shortstop, appreciate it as well.

“No matter what it is, any part of the game, he always just kind of helps us out and gives us good advice,” Caulfield said.

Marjama’s helped Jayden Kasai, a junior catcher, by telling him not to squeeze his hand when he catches balls behind the plate. This prevents pitches from falling out of catchers’ mitts.

“I think it’s an issue for every catcher,” Kasai said.

NEW SPORTS FIELDS IN GRANITE BAY?

13 acres available at former Eureka school campus that closed in 2010

ith space for recreational land tight in Granite Bay, Placer County staff and Eureka Union School District administrators could pursue an unorthodox solution to build new athletic fields.

Thirteen acres of land, including approximately nine undeveloped acres, sit behind the former Eureka School District Campus at 5455 Eureka Rd. that closed in 2010. County and school district officials are considering turning this land into artificial-turf athletic fields.

“I’m optimistic because of the need and desire that we’re hearing from the community,” said Tom Janis, superintendent for Eureka Union School District.

Janis made his remarks Oct. 12 following a community discussion meeting at the former school, which now serves a special-education program.

Approximately 40 people attended this meeting, including parents whose chil-

dren are involved with the Granite Bay Football Club such as Amy McCarthy.

McCarthy, whose three children attend second through seventh grades, makes use of the area’s parks. Her second-grader enjoys Olympus Park and Hillsborough Park, calling them “Dinosaur Park” and “Pirate Park,” respectively. But technically, each of these parks is in Roseville.

Granite Bay’s perceived lack of trails saddens McCarthy, who moved from Boise, Idaho two years ago.

“People move to Granite Bay because it’s beautiful, and then we can’t even use the space because it’s all private property,” McCarthy said.

She’d like more trails as well.

“It’s really sad that you have the Miner’s Ravine Trail … and it ends as soon as you get to Granite Bay,” McCarthy said.

continued from page 31 ministrator for Placer County, said taxpayers currently pay $81.46 per parcel or $613,000 for existing parks in Granite Bay. Other potential funding sources exist, such as $843,203 in park dedication fees sitting in an account for developing park and trail facilities in Granite Bay. But Fisher said all the possible revenue still comes up short of the $13.5 million in total costs for park improvement options. This includes $4 million to turn the land behind the former Eureka Elementary School campus into artificial turf athletic fields.

Once the county or district has this money, the start of work won’t be too far out.

“If tonight, someone walked in here with a check for $4 million: six months,” Janis said.

Fisher told attendees a bond measure in June 2018 that would provide park funding is likely, though he added after the meeting that this wasn’t certain.

“It’s a target,” Fisher said. “It’s a point on the horizon we’re looking toward.”

He had a large sheet of paper on dis-

play at the front of the meeting, asking attendees how much they’d be willing to pay for new parks. McCarthy said she’d be willing to pay $20 a month.

“If you think about it as an overall portion of our property tax, it’s so small,” McCarthy said.

County staff will present to the Placer

County Board of Supervisors near the end of November, giving an update on parks and a master plan.

Fisher was optimistic about being able to procure funding.

“My take on Granite Bay is (its residents) know a value when they see it,” Fisher said.

herri and Garry Burley have hundreds of children. It’s true! From the mid-1970s until about 2002, Sherri, who is now 76, was responsible for at least 200 children from infancy until they were in junior high schools, seeing them through Little Darlings Daycare at her home in Granite Bay. “I consider all the daycare children as my own kids,” she said. “I’m definitely a millionaire in friends and the children that have been in my care … I think I’ve probably raised half of Placer County!”

and one can’t help but notice countless photos of many of the children, dating back decades, as well as current photos of these children as adults today.

“Some of my kids became doctors, lawyers, you name it,” Sherri said. “I am in contact with a lot of them still today including one child who is now all grown up, but when she comes home at Christmas time she always calls me and wants to help Garry and me decorate our Christmas tree.”

time they were infants until they were in junior high. Hart became a good friend of Sherri and Garry, and today she helps the couple with matters that require technology, as Sherri doesn’t own a computer or cell phone.

“There isn’t anything I wouldn’t do for them,” Hart said. “Since Sherri didn’t have any daughters, I’ve stepped into that role.

I even helped her make her famous chili recipe for the Friends of the Granite Bay Library Chili Cook off held last month.

She is an amazing cook.”

Hart said what made the care at Little

Darlings Daycare so special for her boys was that all the children in Sherri’s care were treated as if they were her own.

“When my boys were home for their birthdays recently, one of their requests was to go visit Grandma Sherri and Papa Burley,” Hart said.

Granite Bay resident Karen Reid is also a close friend of Sherri and Garry. Her daughters, Denise and Heather, were in Sherri’s care in the early 1980s. Karen and Sherri currently work together preparing meals for the homeless once a month at Lutheran Church of the Resurrection, where they both have been members for decades.

“Grandma Sherri was one of the first people Heather called when she found out she was expecting,” Karen said. “No one can love kids more than Sherri.”

Heather said she recalls Sherri wasn’t just a babysitter. She provided many life lessons.

“Many of my childhood memories are from daycare, being able to pet the horses and picking fresh vegetables from the garden for our lunches,” Heather said.

“She has been to all my big milestones: my high school graduation, my wedding and just recently my baby shower. She has truly touched my heart.”

Karen said Sherri had a unique way of getting to know all the members of the family and bringing everyone together, whether they were in her care or not.

Sherri and Garry have been married almost 58 years. They met on July 4 and were engaged about two weeks later. They

both admit it was love at first sight. Sherri grew up in Chico and Garry was the son of a dairy farmer in Willows.

The couple had two boys, Lonnie Scott and Terry Garth. Terry, 53, lives in Newcastle and is an estimator for J & S Asphalt.

Lonnie was killed in a cow-herding accident in Nevada in 2014.

“He was a real cowboy,” said Garry, who is 78 years old. “I always said he was just born 100 years too late.”

Cody James, 31, and 30-year-old Levi Slade are Lonnie’s sons. Levi lives with Sherri and Garry, helping them out around the house. Terry also has two children: Trinity Dawn, 17, and Dakota Montgomery, 21.

Terry was a young child when his mother started Little Darlings Daycare.

He said he always felt like the children who were at his home for daycare were part of his family.

“I never felt short-changed. My parents did a good job of making sure of that,” Terry said. “They taught us the importance of having good values, being honest and always knowing the right thing to do.”

Terry said he and his brother always had chores, including cleaning the pens of the pigs they used to raise for 4-H club, which was a big part of their lives for many years.

Today, even though Sherri doesn’t run a daycare center, she and Garry still care for two boys, Jackson, 8, and his 6-year-old brother Brady a few days a week.

“We consider them to be our grandsons,” Sherri said.

irst off, we would like to thank everyone who voted for us, 2017 Best of the Best Wine Bar — Folsom Telegraph.

When everyone thinks of wine regions and countries, the obvious come to mind: California, France, Spain, Italy, Australia, and on and on. One of the least obvious — surprise! — is China.

China has been producing wine for centuries. Today the world’s most populous country is becoming a world player in the global wine industry, not only in consumption but production also.

China, most notably including Hong Kong, is among the top 10 wine markets in the world. According to a study by Vinexpo and International Wine and Spirits Research, China was the world’s fifth largest consumer of wine, both domestic and imported, in 2011.

Because Chinese mostly drink red wine, China is now the world’s largest market for red wine.

According to the International Organization of Vine and Wine, China now has the second largest vineyard area worldwide after Spain, pushing France into third place.

Does California have to worry about the influx of cheap wine hitting the local market? Not yet, as 90 percent of wine produced in China is also consumed there, as more and more of its citizens have a greater disposable income.

Will this have an impact on the wine exported from California to China? Surprisingly, no, as the market segment is growing with more Chinese traveling abroad and discovering California wine regions, then looking for them locally when they return.

Have I tried Chinese wine? I had the opportunity to sample some of the local wines back in 2000, when I was in China for a conference. The wine in industry then was still in its infancy and the wines were drinkable, but 16 years on, the quality has improved considerably.

So if you have the opportunity to visit China, expand your wine experience and sample some of its domestic product. We would love to hear your opinion.

esterday morning I was in line for coffee with a friend when I noticed the “healthy” fitness bars on display. The packaging was deceptive, to give it a wholesome look that would make you believe the snack was a healthy one.

I flipped it over and read the ingredients: Refined flour. Refined sugar. Additives. Loads of simple carbs and sugars.

There was nothing remotely healthy about it!

A snack like that causes weight gain and further poor food choices, yet people are being fooled into thinking that it’s healthy and good for them.

Looking around the coffee shop I realized that the new trend is to present processed snack foods in packaging that suggests they’re healthy. The one or two benefits of the product are displayed prominently so that we forget to check the rest of the ingredients.

“Gluten free!” (but filled with other refined grains and sugar) “Organic!” (but filled with refined sugar) “Vegan!” (but filled with unhealthy fats and refined sugars) “Sugar free!” (but filled with artificial sweeteners) What really upsets me about this deceptive marketing is that good people who truly want to make healthy choices are being duped. They are eating these packaged foods under a misconception, and in reality they may as well be eating the cheaper packaged snacks from a gas station. The weight gain and nutritional hazards are the same.

Big food companies know that we want to eat healthier, so their marketing is getting more clever than ever to keep us coming back to purchase their packaged, processed, toxic foods. And we pay the price in pounds gained, and in health diminished.

Let’s fight back.

Pass by the packaged snack foods, no matter how enticing and comforting the words on it may be.

Always read the ingredient list of foods you purchase.

Stick with real, whole foods instead of processed foods.

Military history inspiration!

ith the celebration of Veterans’ Day this month, my Hometown Hero is an educator who lives in Granite Bay and teaches at Granite Bay High School — Mr. Dale Mortensen. Some of you may know him as “Coach Mort,” the Granite Bay varsity assistant head football coach since the high school opened 1996. He left for a few years to tackle the head coaching job in 2004 at Oakmont, then returned to teach and coach at Granite Bay in 2010.

You may or may not know that Dale is also an enthusiastic and inspiring teacher. His primary topics are world history, AP Human Geography and military history.

Being a fellow football coach (retired), I knew Dale on the football field, but it wasn’t until a plaque was being hanged in the front lobby of Granite Bay High School a few years back that I learned what an inspiration Dale was has been for his students.

I remember waiting with Gold Star mother Patty Schumacher in the lobby with the principal and a few other school administrators as the plaque was being prepared before a brief ceremony. The plaque was to honor Patty’s son, Granite Bay graduate U.S. Marine Lcpl. Victor Dew. Victor is the only Granite Bay resident and high school student to be killed in action while serving our country.

Just a handful of us had gathered on that somber early-October day, but then I saw 30 or 40 students start walking over led

by Dale Mortensen. They all stood behind us during the brief ceremony, showing respect and afterwards greeting Patty and the family with honor. I thanked Dale for coming and asked him, “How did you know about this ceremony?”

He replied, “This is what I do, I teach a class here called American Military History and wanted to show my students what a hero looks like!”

I was impressed and thanked the students for coming. Some had tears in their eyes, including Dale.

Dale is a simple man with five children, all of whom have attended Granite Bay. When interviewing Dale in his classroom, I saw memorabilia from past wars, mementos, models of military planes that students made and left for the class. There were also pictures of veteran guests who spoke to Dale’s students about their experiences during war — people like Lou Conter, a Grass Valley resident and friend of mine who is one of the six remaining survivors of the USS Arizona, sunk in Pearl Harbor; and Len Kovar, a Granite Bay resident and bombardier navigator who was shot down by Germans in World War II before spending nine months as a prisoner of war.

Len wrote a book about his experiences while in his 80s and has shared his experiences with Dale’s class over the years.

“Over my past 26 years of teaching, I have taught approximately 19 different subjects and, by far, this annual class is my favorite,” Dale said. “I teach them about the history of our military going back to the Revolutionary War, WWI, WWII, Vietnam to the present. We have fun one day when we have the US Marines bring in MREs (Meal, Ready-to-Eat) and let the students taste what a combat soldier might eat on the front lines. I educate them that military service is a noble service and we should respect anyone who decides to serve — whether it be a handshake, a meal or a kind smile. Many of these men and women over the years have come back changed, and we should ‘Be the Parade’ of appreciation for the thanks for service they may have never received.”

I ended my time with Dale Mortensen feeling inspired and grateful that a man like this exists in our community. He’s an enthusiastic teacher of patriotism who introduces students to the pain, defeats and suffering of our nation’s military history, but also what has molded us to be the blessed country we are today!

Yes, this nation is not perfect and has faults, but all countries do. I am honored to call Dale Mortensen my friend and this month’s Hometown Hero!
