Breaking stereotypes of senior living Summerset offers memory care, resource library and respite care SPONSORED CONTENT

S

ummerset Senior Living officially opened its doors to the residents of Lincoln in March of this year and has been growing rapidly ever since.

There are currently 66 units in the main building with 115 being built. The project is anticipated to take 15 months to complete, which would open up the original building for memory care.

In the memory care wing, displays have been constructed to help those with dementia to feel less confused by modern life. According to Sales Director Ember Norhaus, dementia patients are more relaxed in familiar surroundings that they remember. Thus, theme rooms, such as kitchens, offices and nurseries have been decorated and stocked with 1950s-era décor, to help patients feel more comfortable.

“The building was designed for it,” Nordhaus said.

Eventually, the top floor will be dedicated fully to memory care with the downstairs units available for pre-memory care couples.

This is a concept that is in action now and is not seen implemented in any other senior care centers.

“There’s no other program like that,” said Nordhaus about couple memory care.

This program allows couples to continue to live together when either spouse is diagnosed with dementia. It offers a safe place for a full and active lifestyle while either spouse receives the care needed.

It is 10 times more dramatic for those with dementia to process information when they lose their homes, spouse, lifestyle, etcetera Nordhaus said.

“Growing old is not for the faint of heart. There is so much information. Where do we start?” Nordhaus said. “What we are trying to do is we want to be a resource.”

By next year, Summerset will produce a resource guide and add to its library even more books and videos on care. This library is available to all. The center can even recommend certain specialists.

“We can help guide them through the aging process even if they don’t come here,” Nordhaus said. “We want to be that place to start.”

Summerset differs from other senior care homes with their respite program. Most seniors don’t have the means to heal completely after a hospital visit, immediately returning to the stress of daily life. The program provides care for a short period of time to better aid complete healing. This also avoids further accidents and allows seniors to stay in their homes longer.

“We put them up in a hotel-like setting,” Nordhaus said. “You can just get better.”

There are about three respite rooms at any given time and is also available for those who want to try out the center.

Residents are allowed pets and the care of their animals is built into a personalized care plan for each individual.

“We are very pet friendly,” she said.

The residents are very active with amenities on site and events in the community. Residents can go see a game or stay on-site and play on the putting green, enjoy happy hour with live music, do some gardening and more. Summerset also supports the Lincoln Potters.

In January 2018, their 100 years of fashion show will be open to the public displaying clothing from each decade. Some pieces will be from local vendors and even residents. A swing band will perform and visitors can browse vintage pop-up shops. A portion of the proceeds will go to adopt an elder in the community.

“We do a lot of intercommunity activities,” Nordhaus said. “Everybody cares about everybody else. It is a sense of community.”

Lincoln has been very welcoming to the new complex. It has that small-town feel everybody loves, Nordhaus added. ❖

AUXILIARY IN LINCOLN ASSISTS VETERANS AND FAMILIES

The Veteran of Foreign Wars of the United States Auxiliary was established in 1914, and is still a thriving branch of VFW posts throughout the country.

“The auxiliary exists to assist the commander in the post,” said Laree Quinn, auxiliary president to Post 3010 in Lincoln. “We’re there in the background helping with all the functions, getting the word out that we’re here for the veterans and their families.”

Quinn has be a part of the auxiliary for five years.

She is a Lincoln resident, and works as a teacher at the preschool at Sierra College. Today, it remains an essential arm of the VFW hosting fundraisers, car shows, yard sales and potluck luncheons on Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day with the American Legion. Auxiliary members also make quilts and lap blankets to give to the veterans at Gladding Ridge Assisted Living and Memory Care. Another of the many activities beloved by many Lincoln veterans is an annual Christmas party put on by the VFW. As the president of the auxiliary, Quinn reports to and assists the commander of the Post, Jerry Thomason.

Quinn’s reason for wanting to be a part of the auxiliary is simple and straightforward.

“I wanted to do something to help the veterans and their families,” she said. “My aunt was part of it, so I joined. ... Our country wouldn’t be what it is without their help. They’ve sacrificed so many things for us, this is the least we can do. They deserve so much.”

“For us, it’s all about remembering and honoring the veterans who have gone before us,” Bruce said. “It’s our way of commemorating veterans and what they’ve done.”

“The nation, that’s what it means to us,” Bruce added. “That’s why we’re veterans, to protect our country. I’m a die-hard patriot.”

Bruce said the Veterans Day ceremony will start at 11:11 a.m. and will include the presentation of colors, a 21-gun-salute and the playing of taps. A guest speaker and musical performer have yet to be determined as of press time. A portion of Fifth Street, between E Street and the alley, will be blocked off from traffic.

A social hour, sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, with light refreshments will be held immediately following the ceremony in the Veterans Memorial Hall.

Across town, and a few days earlier, Twelve Bridges Middle School will hold its own Veterans Day commemoration with a special assembly at 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 8. The assembly and a 12:30 p.m. meet-and-greet in the school library are open to all veterans and their guests.

The assembly is sponsored and organized by the middle school’s leadership class.

Traci Jensen, the school’s activity director and leadership class advisor, said it is the fourth time that the Veterans Day assembly has been held at Twelve Bridges Middle School.

“I have a passion for veterans,” Jensen said. “My father was a World War II veteran.

He was a P-38 pilot.”

Jensen said one reason for the Veterans Day program is because there is so much history “right in (the students’ own) backyard and not all of them have an understanding of why.”

This year’s assembly, Jensen said, will include a presentation by the drama club and speeches by students.

“Also, the band will be playing a medley of the anthems for each of the military branches,” Jensen said. “It’s amazing. And we always have a slideshow of veterans and active duty members of the military. The slides are submitted by the students and their family members. It is an amazing tribute.”

“We will have an honor guard that will teach the students how to fold and unfold the flag as well as a presentation of arms,” Jensen added. “We’re really excited.” ❖

The Flying Fortress

The Boeing B-17 “Flying Fortress” is a World War II bomber that was used primarily in Europe.

In 1934, the Boeing Aircraft Company of Seattle began construction of a four-engine heavy bomber. The Boeing Model 299 first took flight on July 28, 1935. The government ordered production of 13 of these aircrafts, designated the Y1B-17. Delivery of these first production models was between Jan. 11 and Aug. 4, 1937. The B-17 received the name Flying Fortress from a reporter who commented on its defensive firepower.

The first B-17s to see action in the Pacific were a flight of 12 aircraft that arrived during the attack on Pearl Harbor. Their expected arrival most likely contributed to the American confusion just prior to the attack.

Crews consisted of 10: pilot, co-pilot, navigator, bombardier/ nose gunner, flight engineer/top turret gunner, radio operator, two waist gunners, ball turret gunner and tail gunner.

B-17s from the Eighth Air Force, based in Range: 2,000 miles with 2,700 kg (6,000 pound) bomb load England, participated in numerous missions that often lasted for more than eight hours. Because of their long-range capability, formations of B-17s usually flew into battle with no fighter escort, relying on their own defensive capabilities to ensure a successful mission.

The radio operator monitored the group frequencies to find out any changes to the flight plan. If the lead plane decided to switch to a secondary target or if a plane fell out of formation, the radio operator would record the message over the group channel and pass the information on to the pilot.

During the war, B-17s were among the most modern aircraft in the U.S. inventory. However, the arrival of the jet age and advances in technology made the

“Who wouldn’t want to fly a B-17?” said Tom Ewing, a retired pilot from Florida. “For a brief period, it’s a time machine – that’s why we do it.”

The chin turret, located below the pilot, is where the turret gunner would sit to control dropping bombs on enemy targets below.

Flying Fortress obsolete soon after the war. In the years following WWII, most B-17s were cut up for scrap, used in Air Force research, or sold on the surplus market. Throughout its career, the B-17 saw active duty with numerous nations including the Soviet Union, Brazil, France, Israel, Portugal and Colombia.

Between 1935 and May of 1945, 12,732 B-17s were produced. Of these aircraft, 4,735 were lost during combat missions. Today, fewer than 100 B-17 airframes exist and less than 15 can still take to the air. ❖

Empire Gymnastics opened January and has been an ambition of Carder’s for a very long time.

When the opportunity presented itself to open his own gym he couldn’t let it pass by. It seemed to be the perfect fit and something the community of Lincoln needed.

“It has always been a major goal of mine,” he said. “(I am) so pleased and excited by the community support. I really enjoy coming to work. I just think this community needed something like that (a gymnasium).”

Carder spent some time in competitive gymnastics as well as other sports before graduating high school. He began coaching immediately after school. Some of his students have gone on to win state championships, regional championship and one was a member of U.S. Junior National Team.

After settling down and having kids, Carder decided to branch off and have his own gymnasium facility.

“(We want to) help every athlete become the best they can be,” Carder said. “Our vision is to be able to reach people.”

Tumbling and gymnastics are full-body sports that benefit both physically and mentally. Physically it benefits the body and for athletes, it helps them excel. Even going just once a week to classes can help improve coordination, agility and flexibility, complimenting any sport. Some come to improve in the sports they already play; anything from football to soccer to wrestling.

“Most people are taking them (classes) several times a week,” he said.

“What we teach here kind of encompasses everything,” Carder said. “It just really compliments everything.”

Some of the classes are taught by Carder while the others are instructed by a team of bout 13 well-qualified coaches. Some are ex-competitive gymnasts. There is a lot of in-house training for the instructors so all are on the same page, Carder said.

“We try to set an example for what we ask of the students,” he said.

For each class there is a ratio of one instructor to about eight to 10 students providing much focused attention during the duration of classes.

When it came time to pick a name for his gymnasium, Carder wanted a strong name that fit perfectly to the large facility and the lively, exciting environed it encompasses. It was a name he had always carried in the back of his mind.

“I wanted something powerful for the name,” Carder said.

He said he is trying to build an empire of great parents, kids, gymnasts and others.

After many years, Carder’s dream is a reality. ❖

Do you love the outdoors?

Hiking Placer County, our backyard

With fall just around the corner, the weather has cooled down a bit and is perfect for more outdoor activities. I could go into detail about various things you could do in Placer County out on the lakes, mountain biking, camping or other activities, but I want to share some inside information about some great hikes that are close by.

One of the things I really like about Placer County is how close we are to nature. Whether you just want to do a quick and easy Saturday morning hike or if you want to do a multiple-day backpacking trip in the back country, there are tons of options. As a Boy Scout leader, I have had the opportunity to experience a lot of the outdoors first hand. If you want to get out and improve your fitness and enjoy the peace of nature, here are a few good ideas for hikes close by.

If you are looking for a quick and easy hike that just requires a good pair of shoes and some water, try out Hidden Falls Regional Park. Located just South of Auburn, Hidden Falls has more than 30 miles of trail in the 1,200-acre park. In the last few years, it has become more popular and can actually be busy at certain times. There are maps at the parking lot and a number of loops that you can do that are quite easy.

There is a web cam on Hidden Falls’ website that shows the parking lot and you can judge how busy it is by the number of cars in the lot. If you are looking for an easy hike, this is a great option and there are a few scenic overlooks that give you a nice area for a picnic while overlooking the falls.

If you want to get out to some other easy hikes that are more remote and have a lot less people, I recommend checking out some of the trails up by Grouse Ridge Overlook. It is a bit more of an adventure to get there and the kids feel like they are really going on a real adventure. To get there, go up I-80 to Highway 20. Take Highway 20 toward Nevada City and then take Bowman Road (Highway 18) and drive up a few miles to Highway 14. It turns into a dirt road at this point and you can drive all the way up to Grouse

Ridge Campground. Take a minute to go up to the old overlook, the views are fantastic. The road is a little bumpy, it is better suited for trucks or high-clearance vehicles but I have seen a Toyota Prius up there before. This is best to do in the fall, because I have been up there in July and portions of the road are still blocked by snow. Once you get up to the Grouse Ridge Campground, there are multiple options for short day hikes or backpacking loops past multiple lakes that can take a couple days. Some of my favorites for short-destination hikes are hiking to Sanford or Milk Lake. These are good half-day adventures. I always like to jump in the lake and cool off after a bit of a hike so you may want to go prepared with a towel or swimsuit.

If you are in the mood for a little more difficult hike (but not too difficult), Loch Leven is a fun place to go. Head up I-80 and take the Big Bend exit and drive a little way up past the ranger station. You will see the trail head on the other side of the street from the restrooms. The first part of the hike has a pretty good elevation gain, but after the first mile, things get easier. For this hike, you may want to have hiking shoes or boots and hiking poles are helpful. There are three lakes at the top, I find the second most scenic and it has some good places to sit by the lake for a picnic. This is one of the overnight backpacking trips we take some of the new Boy Scouts on. The distance to the middle lake is about four miles from the trail head and the scenery is typical of a high Sierra mountain lake. This is a good day hike.

We have so many beautiful places in Placer County and sometimes we tend to get busy with our daily lives and don’t take the time to get out and enjoy nature. These hikes are great to improve your fitness and unplug from the daily grind. What are the benefits of ETFs?

As we near the end of another year, I wanted to write about something year-end related or related to the holidays. Then I met with not one, not two, but THREE clients who derogatorily said, “Yea, but they are ETFs,” when we discussed potential changes in their accounts. Therefore, this month is a crusade to educate on what an exchange traded fund (referred to as an ETF) is. With that, how about we start with two big things you may not know about ETFs?

1. THEY AREN’T JUST INDEX FUNDS ANYMORE. I’ve heard some express that ETFs are just as overly diversified as mutual funds and can water down your returns as a result. Let’s start by saying, some of the first ETFs were products designed to mimic broad market indexes.

However there are now hundreds of ETFs that range from index funds, to sector specific funds, to cross sections of indexes based on market capitalization, and with many other strategies and goals. Some even use custom indexes to benchmark against. Want to buy real estate, but can’t handle the liquidity issue it presents? There is an ETF for you. Want to buy into social responsible companies only?

There is an ETF for you. This brings us to No. 2.

2. THE FEES ARE LOWER THAN MUTUAL FUNDS BECAUSE THEY ARE PASSIVE. Yes, mutual funds can be actively managed and ETFs still haven’t gained much traction in actively managed approaches. ETFs can be actively bought and sold by an adviser and

often the fee for hiring the adviser plus the fund fee is still less than the mutual fund. The reason ETFs have lower fees has nothing to do with management style and everything to do with how the products are created and offered. A mutual fund is a pool of money and you buy into that pool directly from the fund company. They have administration, operations, and other expenses they have to cover in addition to asset selection. An ETF is created by the fund creator and sold in a “creation unit” to an “authorized participant” which is a financial institution like a broker-dealer. Then the authorized participant can either keep those assets within the creation unit, or break up the unit into tens of thousands of shares in the ETF and sell it on exchanges to individual investors like you and I. This exchange of creation units between the ETF creator and the authorized participant makes the costs of creating shares in an ETF way lower than creating shares in a mutual fund and those savings are passed on to the investors in the form of lower expense ratios.

We went into a few more technical terms than I like to in this column. Hopefully I didn’t lose you and you learned something.

ETFs can be used very effectively in a portfolio. They may not be of interest to you, but they can be very valuable to many investors from those just starting out to those well into retirement. ❖
