eggy Seitzinger has been voted for this year’s Women in Business award and it is an honor that she takes to heart. “Being named Business Woman of the Year means a great deal to me. I love Roper’s Jewelers as if my name was on the front door. I love the connection I have to the community that stems from my career at Roper’s. I understand and value the concept that it is my place at Roper’s that has not just allowed me to be an active part of the business community, but has supported me and encouraged me to do so. I’m a big believer in the idea that people are like dots, and when we are able to connect the dots, or connect the people, beautiful pictures can emerge from what appeared to be a random group of dots. My job is not to sell jewelry; my job is to connect the dots,” Seitzinger said. Throughout her career with Roper’s Jewelers she has found been influenced by both Harvey and Brenda Roper. “When I was 19, Harvey hired me to work in his jewelry store. For the next 20 years he taught me all about the jewelry business. However, he controlled my ascent. He wouldn’t let me move up in the business until I had earned my bachelor’s degree. Once I did, then the sky was the limit. He laid the groundwork for me. Then, with Harvey’s untimely passing, Brenda stepped forward as the store’s owner. At that time, she taught me the meaning of perseverance, the importance of being willing to learn a whole different side to a business that she had lived in and worked in for years. She showed me that truly caring for your staff takes precedence over your own pain. The two of them showed me the many facets of running a business and being a contributing part of a community,” she said.

Seitzinger’s presence in the community is nothing short of abundant. She is currently the president of the Gold Country Fair Heritage Foundation; she sits on the executive board for Leadership Auburn and is on the planning committee for Sutter Auburn Faith Hospital’s Faith and Fantasy Ball. In addition she is the past president of the Downtown Business Association, is the co-chair for the Christmas in Auburn Committee and works actively on the planning of the State of the Community Dinner. Auburn is a very beloved town to Seitzinger and for the past 10 years she has also served with the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. “She brings so much insight and energy to what she does. She is truly supportive of all the projects she takes on,” said Jan Ferreira who nominated Seitzinger. “Peggy is a wonderful role-model,” said Connie Watson another nominator. When she isn’t lending her helping hand around Auburn, Seitzinger is at home with her husband Tom, 16-year-old son Jake, and 14 yearold daughter Samantha, “just about doing anything,” she said. “We’re all foodies and we love to eat great food. Lucky for us Tom is an amazing cook. I enjoy running. I’ve completed three full marathons, a few half marathons, and I am currently training for a 20-mile race on Nov. 5. My husband belongs to the Auburn Jeep Club, so we have lots of fun adventures with our Jeep Club family. I love reading early on a weekend morning with a cup of coffee and the sun peeking through the tree tops. I love to have a busy, full life that is filled to the rim,” Seitzinger said.

his December 18 will mark the 13th anniversary of The Doggie Bag, a boutique store catering primarily to dogs. Sherrie came home one day with an idea to offer high quality foods, supplements and treats for just about any dog’s needs. After about a year studying various foods, and supplements and treats she embarked on this adventure. The target was to keep pets healthy through proper nutrition. The store also has many ancillary accessories like the typical collars, leashes, beds typically found in pet box stores. Sherrie’s intention was to offer better quality products than those box stores. There are also birthday cakes and a fully stocked bakery case for that special pup. The rewards for Sherrie are being able to help dogs that might have digestive issues, allergies, etc. without having to use pharmaceuticals or prescription foods. She has been
successful in helping many dogs enjoy a better quality of life thru an holistic approach. The majority of the foods and treats offered are made in America. The dog food environment has changed over the past 13 years. Sherrie keeps up with the various trends of the industry to insure that that products offered at The Doggie Bag are current and positive. Sherrie’s sales background at a corporate level helps her relate to customer’s needs and requirements of their pets. The Doggie Bag continues to work with various rescue facilities, recently making a generous donation to the Houston SPCA after that area was hit by a hurricane. We live in Auburn for the past 18 years. The store located in Granite Bay will be 13 years old. The second store opened in Roseville 6 1/2 years ago. Retail is a 24/7 job, but again, her vision is what makes her successful.
Brenda Roper did not dream of owning a jewelry store when she grew up. Yet, here she is:
the accomplished owner of Roper's Jewelers. With the unexpected passing of Brenda's husband, Harvey, she found herself at the helm of the Roper's family business. As her parents, Doy and Peggy Wilson taught her at a young age, she rolled up her sleeves and got to work. Though Brenda had worked in the accounting side of the business for more than 30 years, she quickly learned to oversee all aspects of the jewelry store. Brenda's willingness to face challenges while supporting her staff and carrying on Ralph & Harvey Roper's vision, have made her into a formidable businesswoman.

What a Wonderful Journey What a wonderful journey the past ten years have been for this “Woman in Business”. It is with mixed emotions that I share the news that Cruiser’s Carwash will be under new ownership this November. My family needs more of me. Auburn has been a great community to serve and I have met so many wonderful individuals, businesses and organizations. “ I have tucked all the memories into my heart, and they are so rich with love, that they will fuel my next several years.”
Don’t let the “crankies” discourage you, because they will try. One of my favorite mottos that I hold onto is: “Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass, It’s about learning to dance in the rain.” May you be richly blessed and know that you have touched our lives at Cruiser’s. Consistently good in every case. Her experience shows through when involved in legal matters with a client. Her output is almost always free of mistakes and in line with the requirements of a given legal document. Her experience shows in her final document, which must be, in many cases, filed with the court. It is usually the case that most people are evaluated by the appearance of their final work product, but the question to be answered is not only appearance, but also the effectiveness of legal document upon the party to whom it is addressed. Most legal documents require a certain knowledge of the facts, but also knowledge of the choice of law applicable to the facts. If a legal document assistant cannot be effective in finding both the right facts and the right law the client is in more danger than when he or she first walked through the front door. Karen Phillips has the ability to do both and knows where to find the answers if she does not have personal knowledge. This ability is seen in one out of 10 document assistants. The result is a happy client. That is the goal of the entire process.

Michelle is the biggest ray of sunshine I know. It passes from her to everything, everywhere and everybody she meets. It is a honor to have the chance to be able to nominate Michelle Kohler. This wonderful caring and loving lady takes care of are special, bright-eyed loving children. She is the one that make sure they arrive to school on time and get back home to their loving parents when school is out. She also volunteers for the Salvation Army here in Auburn for there Thursday night kids night, Christmas basket program also driving the bus to and from summer camp and other events. Over the past two years she has had several health problems. It all started with being diagnosed with breast cancer. But she never give up or give in. Then here comes the problems with side effects due to treatments that she underwent. But again she’s good strong. Michelle as a single mother raising two wonderful children. Through everything family has always came first even if she wasn’t feeling her best at that time our day she still was their hero. One which has already graduated from Placer High School and now is attending College several hundred miles away from home! The youngest one of the family attends Placer High and plays in the Placer High School band. Will be going off to college in a few years to continue her education. Now with her last child almost out of high school. This lovely lady has went back to school herself. To complete her education she started when they were in elementary school, she has 2 years completed now it’s time to finish the rest. Remember this lady is such a brave caring ,loving ,spirit she is doing all of this while working, volunteering in the community, taking care of herself and her teenager. Michelle is truly a Auburn woman who means business. She has lived in our town forever itself for the period of time when she was stationed with her husband at the time on military bases. What a blessing it is to be able to call her family. Military wife and mother I would definitely call that a achievement. No one really knows until there in that situation.

Auburn Legal Document Services is an exception to this misfortune of outcomes. Karen is well prepared, most certainly qualified, and strives as much as any client could ever reasonably ask to provide a most needed service to the public at large. Her delivery is the epitome of professionalism -- informed, patient, attentive, committed, and detached where necessary to best serve her clients’ interests. Her impact in the broader local economy is profound in my estimation, helping others best allocate their resources and realize their own capacity to serve. She obviously observed a gross inefficiency in the marketplace and set out to provide a service to mitigate that inefficiency. In doing so, she stages multiplying positive outcomes to the benefit of the entire community. My own professional experience involves over two decades consulting experience helping very large organizations use technology to achieve very personalized outcomes. With so many service businesses, technology represents a lost opportunity, and even worse, it sometimes alienates the customer. Karen uses technology in her business most appropriately, it never taking center stage or driving any aspect of the client relationship, yet delivering reliably where efficiency can be found. I found Karen’s work is a sincere rejection of her personal values, reminding me that service to others is in and of itself a source of deep satisfaction — a personal gain that goes well beyond the tangible. Many images exist for that title of ‘business person’. The image I would want most publicized and would be that of Karen Phillips executing her day-to-day professional service. I would without any hesitation nominate her for Business Woman of the Year.

In 2011 our office manager of 16 years moved to another city. Bonnie decided that this was a good time to get more involved in the family business. Although having no office experience, Bonnie was all in, learning what she needed as she went. Right away Bonnie’s positive, relaxed and personable personality made a big difference with our customers. (People like to do business with people they like.) Nominee Sandy Bassett Nomination submitted by: Bev Anderson ➤ Business associated with: Auburn Interfaith Food Closet I nominate Sandy Bassett, President of the Auburn Interfaith Food Closet and Chair of the Board of Directors. A graduate of Sacramento State University in Organizational Communication, she worked in the Department of Motor Vehicles from part-time technician to program manager in the Vehicle Registration program with responsibility for policy development and operations. She retired in October 2005 after 34 years of full-time experience. When an appeal was made to the church she attended for volunteers for the Auburn Interfaith Food Closet(AIFC) she felt it was a calling for her as she liked to help people. She became a Board member in February 1999 while still working at DMV. In February 2005, she was elected Board President. At that time, 400 families received groceries each month from a 1400 square foot building in DeWitt Center. In 2011, the average was up to 1023. In 2014, AIFC moved to a 5,000-square foot warehouse near the Auburn Airport. This brought all storage into one building with improved refrigeration. Her communication skills were tested as some did not welcome AIFC. She allayed their fears and brought in the bus service all wanted. Now, the challenge is rent rising and relocation necessary. Sandy works with a volunteer staff of 200 plus, leads the 25-member Board of Directors with its numerous committees coming from the current 19 supporting congregations. She works with numerous community business partners that have increased over the years she has led the organization. Sandy also brought together the food closets of Placer County into a collaborative group. Representatives meet monthly to insure food safety for the county. Sandy has taken the skills and abilities she developed in her years at the DMV into her encore position that is positively impacting people in Placer County.

Nominee Wendy Cerny Nomination submitted by: Joseph Cerny I would like to nominate my wife Wendy Cerny for the Woman in Business award, Wendy who lives in Auburn is a Pediatrician at Kaiser in Roseville. She is the Assistant Chief Physician in charge of 30 physicians with a staff of approximately 105 people. Despite her administrative duties she sees patients and has been consistently one of the highest ranked doctors in patient satisfaction and clinical care and was in Sacramento’s 2016 magazine named as one of the top physicians in the region. She once was involved in heading a hearing program in the region. She has volunteered at numerous functions including return visits to the Special Olympics held at UC Davis. She graduated from Medical school in Virginia in 1992 the same year she married her husband who is a physician who practices in Auburn. She used to be an officer in the the Navy. In Texas in the early 90’s she went to combat training school and was issued an oversized uniform that swallowed her petite 5’2” 108 pound frame. When she arrived the guys joked that she looked like private Judy Benjamin, after a character in a movie played by Goldie Hawn at the time, where a prissy woman showed up to military training camp not expecting to do any work but paint her nails. The first evening she was in camp her troop was woken up in the middle of the night and rounded up onto transport vehicles and driven out into the woods where explosives were detonated near their vehicles. They were told in this mock military exercise that they had to make it back to camp without being captured or killed. The first one back would capture a flag. She was one of only a few to make it back to the camp and the first one back and did capture that flag. Later in the week they had target practice and she received the top score. She got a lot of respect from the male officers. Later in 1993 she headed a clinic at El Torro marine base in Orange County where she treated marines. She was one of only a few women who worked at the base. The male officers seemed to like her over some of the other woman because of her easy going, positive attitude and her ability to get along with and joke with the other staff and yet still command respect which are qualities that have made her a good leader. She was often the only women asked to go on helicopter tours. She moved to the area in 1998 where she started working at Kaiser. She has helped raise her two kids and fostered in them hard work, commitment, dedication and the need to help others. Her daughter graduated from CalPoly this year and her son was a high school valedictorian who started the organ donor program at Placer High School and now attends UCLA. She celebrated her 25th anniversary this year. She enjoys running and was a top 10 finisher in last years New year resolution run. When it is cold and rainy her husband prefers to work out at the gym and she often prefers running in the rain. So if so see a petite 50 year old woman running in the rain in the winter wave. It is probably Wendy.

With grace and confidence, Kathryn manages advertising for businesses across the United States. Born and raised in Auburn and a graduate of Placer High, Kathryn knew she wanted to remain in the community in which she grew up. Always true to her family roots, Kathryn has been successful at juggling a demanding career, raising two beautiful daughters, and caretaking aging parents. No, she is not curing cancer or housing the homeless, but she is the type of woman our daughters should emulate. Honest, smart, organized, funny and faithful. I found myself facing a serious court battle over a personal issue. As a senior citizen, I was not adequately prepared for the incredible processes and procedures and legal hurdles that I suddenly found in my path. I sought out Karen Philips and after thoroughly going through my predicament, she knew exactly what to do, the necessary legal documents, the court appearances, et al. Karen’s superior understanding of our legal and judicial requirements meant that I saved invaluable time and costly expense while successfully responding to my needs. Karen did all the necessary court filings and appearances for me and substantially calmed my associated anxieties. Karen has been straight forward and aggressive for me each time I have reached out to her for paralegal services. But she is also a compassionate and caring person, always confident in her support of my situation. I will continue to seek out Karen whenever the need arises.
