Her aspiration to seek a career in law enforcement began in her late teens. In 1991, at 19 years old, McCollough was a lifeguard at Folsom Lake. She worked with Supervisor Ranger Jill Dampier who made a long-lasting mark on McCollough’s life.

somehow bring a moment of peace to a family, person or situation in that moment of crisis; I feel like I’ve done my job. Whatever action I take on any given call; hopefully the end result is that I’ve restored the peace.”

Despite the job’s challenges, McCollough seeks justice.

“The most challenging part of my job is when I see innocent people, especially young children, being violently victimized,” she said. “On the other hand, it is very satisfying to be able to arrest and ultimately see a suspect prosecuted, convicted and sentenced for their brutal crimes.”

McCollough said the community in return can help APD on election day, by investigating measures on the ballot before voting.

“However, I do believe the people of the State of California as a whole need to be very well informed before going to the voting booths,” she said. “Recent legislation that has passed in California has made it very difficult for law enforcement to keep drugs off the street and dangerous criminals in jail.”

✪ Auburn Police Department ‘Report incidents or trends’ can help make Auburn safer

“I think the APD (Auburn Police Department) is really community oriented and focused on more than just responding to crimes but making it a better place,” Detective Jenny Turner said.

Turner has been with Auburn Police since 2014 and was recently named City Employee of the Year by the Auburn Chamber of Commerce.

“Turner did in one year what most law enforcement offers do not get a chance to do in their entire careers,” City of Auburn Public Safety Director John Ruffcorn wrote in the Auburn Journal earlier in the month.

Here are just a few examples of Turner’s experience:

Turner was key in making an arrest of a serial child molester who had kept authorities on his trail in Washington, Oregon and California.

Turner related an experience of coming to the aid of a man who had his throat slit, and helped direct pressure to minimize bleeding until more help could arrive.

The man survived.

Before she was a police officer, Turner worked for California State Parks and was first on the scene when a sheriff helicopter crashed. She helped save a life there, too.

How can the community help Turner and the Auburn Police Department?

“I think that the biggest thing the community can do to support us is communication,” she said. “By reporting incidents or trends they are seeing.”

And, Turner also said there is always a need for volunteers who can assist with such duties as traffic control and parking patrol at special events.

She also saves lives.

✪ Placer Hills Fire Protection District and Foreshill Fire district Placer Hills’ Pat Nelson has been fighting fires for 30 years

The Foresthill Fire Protection District is managed by an elected board of directors. Fire Chief Kirk Kushen manages the operations of the district. For the past several years the Foresthill Fire Protection District has been operating under joint management with the Placer Hills Fire Protection District.

Pat Nelson is the battalion chief for Placer Hill Fire Protection District which covers Applegate, Weimar and Meadow Vista. Nelson grew up in Placer County and attended Colfax High School. He is now a resident of Weimar. Although he has only been the battalion chief for four months, Nelson began working for the district in 1998 and started as a volunteer firefighter in 1987.

As a forestry major in college, Nelson qualified to work on a hand crew over the summer when he was 19 and fight wildfires.

“We got work with the forest service and fly in helicopters over Yosemite,” Nelson said. “That was appealing to me. I like to work; I like being outside, out in the weather; I don’t mind staying up late running calls at night.”

As the battalion chief, Nelson’s primary responsibilities are to respond to any fires, vehicle accidents or other emergency situations and manage the scene and crews. He also has certain administrative duties such as making sure crews are doing their jobs, and keeping up with prevention work, station maintenance and budgetary responsibilities.

“I didn’t have an ‘aha’ moment where I realized I wanted to help people my whole life,” Nelson admitted.

“For me, it just kind of fit. I’m a hyper-active guy; I don’t like to come in and do the exact same thing over and over again. It’s the challenge of something new every day.”

✪ Auburn Fire Auburn-born brothers serve the community through fire department “Auburn is a tight-knit community, that’s my big thing — to give back to the community.”

Brothers Lucas and John Rogers together have racked up 35 years of service as firefighters.

John began as a volunteer in 1997 and went full time in 2000. He now serves as a fire captain for Auburn Fire.

A few years later, Lucas joined in.

Lucas’s department has full-time, part-time and volunteer members. With decades of experience, helping new firefighters learn the ropes is a perk of the job.

“I was unsure of what I wanted to do after with my life after high school,” Lucas related. “I was attending Sierra College and taking general ed classes. My brother John asked me what my plan was. Like every other 18 year old, I had no idea.”

“We often lose people to other departments. It’s always great when they go on to have successful careers,” Lucas said. “I take a lot of pride in knowing I played a part in their success.”

John suggested Lucas go on a ride along.

It took just one and Lucas was hooked. Lucas then put all his efforts toward becoming a firefighter.

Being a firefighter has its challenges, however.

“I think the biggest challenge for the fire department is the raising call volume,” Lucas said. “When I started, we ran around 1,500 emergencies a year. This year we’re on pace to top 2,300 emergencies.”

He began as a volunteer in 2002 and went full time in 2006. Lucas now serves as an engineer for Auburn Fire.

The brothers grew up in Auburn and have come to know many residents.

“Auburn is a tight-knit community, that’s my big thing — to give back to the community,” John said.

“Stop by the station and talk to everybody, ask questions,” John said. “We’re always willing to talk to people. It’s always great when people ask questions.”

“The positive side to that is that people know me and most of the other guys in the fire department on a personal level. Those relationships are great because the community knows we truly care,” Lucas added.

“The fire departments role is always changing and adapting the communities needs. We’re here for the citizens of Auburn and I think the community knows that,” Lucas said.

✪ Newcastle Fire Newcastle Fire ready to help in cases of accidents, fires and hazmat responses

Greg Kirk is the captain on B shift at Station 41 in Newcastle with the Newcastle Fire Protection District.

Raised in Foresthill, he started with Foresthill Fire in 1997. He is now a resident of Roseville and has been a captain at Station 41 for nine years.

“We cover medical aid, vehicle accidents, structure fires, wild-land fires and hazmat responses,” Kirk said.

The men and women at Station 41 work a two-byfour schedule, meaning two days on and four days off.

This shift is often altered during fire season or when fire emergencies arise.

During his nine years as captain, Kirk has experienced many long hours, scorching fires and difficult circumstances.

“You always have that one thing where you figure out either you’re going to be able to do this job or you’re not,” Kirk said. “When I started at Newcastle, it was the week before New Year’s Eve and there was a

Station 41 is a single-engine company house and a part of the California Master Mutual Aid System which enables quick response and assistance to any area where the need is greatest.

Kirk acknowledged that there have been many fires recently, both locally and statewide, and said his station usually responds to a fire once or twice a week.

✪ Salvation Army Canteen trucks cook meals for first responders and survivors

Mission statement While each disaster creates its own unique circumstances and special needs, Salvation Army Auburn disaster relief efforts, through the Canteen unit, focuses on delivering food, drink, and comfort to emergency workers and survivors of these events. These services may be modified based on the magnitude of the disaster and adapted to meet the specific needs of the event.

Our Auburn Canteen Corps strives to be prepared to respond to an emergency and serve our community in the quickest and most efficient process possible.

“What Salvation Army does is feed people,” Gail Selby said of the Auburn chapter of the organization.

“The Red Cross shelters.”

Selby is one of many volunteers who help operate a canteen, which is much like a food truck. This mobilizes food service right to an affected area. It serves meals to survivors, firefighters and other first responders onsite.

With the recent California fires, canteen trucks have served warm meals to many across the state.

For instance, in the Napa and Sonoma region at one location, the Salvation Army served 1,000 people. To accomplish this many trucks convened on one location.

Each truck has a crew of about five volunteers and can cook up to 300 meals, Selby said.

Not only are volunteers trained in food service and preparation, but they are also educated in how to speak to survivors.

“Often we’re the first person they talk to,” Selby said.

“We’re the first ones to sit and have a chance to talk to them. We’re showing compassion.”

So along with a cooked meal, friendly servers are ready to listen to victims of disaster.

“We set up and provide, breakfast, lunch dinner and a snack and provide spiritual and emotional care,” she said.

Like most volunteer organizations, Salvation Army is looking for more hands to help. For those who can’t give time, monetary donations are needed as well.

Goods can be donated, but often that takes more volunteers to accept and sort them, and some items may not even be needed, Selby said.

“Money can be put to use to what they really need,” she said.

✪ Auburn CHP CHP officer to retire after 30 years of service

California Highway Patrol Officer Steve Merchant is retiring in the next few months after a long 30-year career.

He was inspired to become an officer by spending time with another CHP officer.

He said the CHP is important because it helps keep law and order and serves the community with safety as the No. 1 priority.

CHP officers are also trained to organized chaos. Coming onto an accident scene where there are injuries, high tension and screaming, calls for order. Merchant has found himself in this situation numerous times and following CHP protocol, first ensures safety, then assesses who to call for help.

He said they are like a beacon in these critical situations.

With all that the highway patrol does for the community, what can we do for them?

CAL FIRE responds to 5.6k wildland fires annually

CAL FIRE has several different branches and each one affects different aspects of the community. Forestry and fire protection are of great importance. CAL FIRE’s mission is to emphasize the management and protection of California’s natural resources. In order to achieve their goal, CAL FIRE conducts ongoing assessments and studies of the state’s natural resources as well as an extensive CAL FIRE Resource management program.

“CAL FIRE oversees enforcement of California’s forest practice regulations, which guide timber harvesting on private lands. Department foresters review an average 500 to 1,400 Timber Harvesting Plans and conduct over 6,500 site inspections each year,” said CAL FIRE’S Public Information Officer Mary Eldridge.

Emergency personnel including the department’s firefighters, fire engines and aircrafts respond to an average of more than 5,600 wildland fires each year, which burn more than 172,000 acres annually.

“We are an all-hazard agency not just wildland fire protection. CAL FIRE responds to medical aids, hazardous material spills, swiftwater rescues, search and rescue missions, civil disturbances, train wrecks, floods, earthquakes and more,” Eldridge said.

✪ Cal fire CAL FIRE answers 350,000 emergency calls annually, services 36 counties agencies, aggressive action in fire prevention and fire safety is occurring throughout the state.

What is CAL FIRE? The men and women of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection are dedicated to the fire protection and stewardship of over 31 million acres of California’s privately-owned wildlands. In addition, the department provides varied emergency services in 36 of the state’s 58 counties via contracts with local governments.

The department’s firefighters, fire engines and aircraft respond to an average of more than 5,600 wildland fires each year. Those fires burn more than 172,000 acres annually.

While Californians are learning more and more about the good as well as the bad of fire, the prevention of large, damaging fires remains a priority for CAL FIRE. From Smokey Bear, to the thousands of CAL FIRE Volunteers in Prevention (VIPs), to new alliances with communities, private industry and government

Beyond its wildland fire fighting role, CAL FIRE answers the call more than 350,000 times for other emergencies each year. It may very well be a CAL FIRE engine and crew that is dispatched to the scene of an auto accident, or to a home where a child has become the victim of a drowning incident. The department is always ready to respond — medical aids; hazardous material spills; swiftwater rescues; search and rescue missions; civil disturbances; train wrecks; floods, earthquakes and more.

Because of the department’s size and major incident management experience, it is often asked to assist or take the lead in disasters, including the Northern and Central California floods of 1997, 1998 and 2006; the 1991 Cantara train derailment and toxic spill; 1994 Northridge earthquake; 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake; the 1991 Tunnel Fire in the Oakland/Berkeley Hills; and the 2003 Southern California Fire Siege.

As part of the CAL FIRE team since 1995, the Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) supports the CAL FIRE mission to protect life and property through fire prevention engineering programs, law and code enforcement and education. The OSFM provides for fire prevention by enforcing fire-related laws in stateowned or operated buildings, investigating arson fires in California, licensing those who inspect and service fire protection systems, approving fireworks as safe and sane for use in California, regulating the use of chemical flame retardants, evaluating building materials against fire safety standards, regulating hazardous liquid pipelines, and tracking incident statistics for local and state government emergency response agencies.

The OSFM, State Fire Training and CAL FIRE Academy programs provide training education and certification programs for the California Fire Service. Through practical training exercises and classroom courses, every California firefighter is exposed to training standards that have been approved by CAL FIRE and

Offering more than 1,000 classes annually, State Fire Training programs reach more than 24,000 students each year and have issued more than 100,000 certifications to members of the more than 900 fire California fire departments. Each year more than 2,000 personnel attend the CAL FIRE Academy in Ione participating in courses ranging from basic fire control and arson investigation, to leadership development and forest practice enforcement.

CAL FIRE’s mission emphasizes the management and protection of California’s natural resources; a goal that is accomplished through ongoing assessment and study of the State’s natural resources and an extensive CAL FIRE Resource Management Program. CAL FIRE oversees enforcement of California’s forest practice regulations, which guide timber harvesting on private lands. Plans are submitted by private landowners and logging companies who want to harvest their trees. The reviews and inspections ensure protection of a product of Auburn Journal

watershed and wildlife, as well as renewal of timber resources. Department foresters and fire personnel work closely to encourage and implement fuels management projects to reduce the threat of uncontrolled wildfires. Vegetation management projects such as “controlled burns” take teamwork between foresters firefighters, landowners, and the local communities. CAL FIRE Foresters promote conservation and the importance of our trees and forests to Californians of all ages.

CAL FIRE manages eight Demonstration State Forests that provide for commercial timber production, public recreation, and research and demonstration of good forest management practices. CAL FIRE foresters can be found in urban areas working to increase the number of trees planted in our cities, or preventing the spread of disease by identifying and removing infected trees.

A Native American burial ground in the path of a logging operation or fire may be verified and saved due to a CAL FIRE archaeologist’s review of the area. And, an improved strain of trees, resistant to disease and pests, may be nurtured and introduced by a CAL FIRE forester.
